Just like in regular jobs, actors get fired from major Hollywood movies for all sorts of reasons, be they "creative differences" with the director or because they weren't quite right for a role after all. Often, we can look back at these decisions with the benefit of hindsight and think, "Yeah, that was definitely the right choice." Take two high-profile cases from the '80s. "Back to the Future" may well have been a hit even with Eric Stoltz playing Marty McFly, but it would've lacked the breezy comic energy that Michael J. Fox brought as his replacement; and the alien hunter in "Predator" certainly wouldn't have been as terrifying with Jean-Claude Van Damme in the suit instead of the towering Kevin Peter Hall, despite the physical prowess of the relatively diminutive Belgian. On the flip side, we all have actors who we think should have been given their marching orders,...

It's been months since the latest guests checked out of The White Lotus. But if you’re still thinking about Season 3’s biggest moments, you’re not alone. While we await the July 15 Emmy nominations, we’ve compiled the highlights from our awards-season chats with the cast — from the moments they suggested, to the scenes they were sad to see cut, to Leslie Bibb’s threats of what she’ll do if she doesn’t hear Sam Rockwell’s name called. Here are 20 things we learned:
1. Sam Rockwell’s monologue could’ve sounded very different
And not just because Woody Harrelson was originally going to play Frank, the 10-month sober and celibate friend of Walton Goggins’ Rick, before a scheduling conflict arose. Rockwell initially thought about using an accent. “I guess because Woody was gonna do it, I had a kind of very sort of masculine Southern accent in my head,...

Kevin Costner became a huge star in the 1980s and 1990s. He embodied a good, dependable All-American kind of guy, often playing golden boys in sports movies like "Bull Durham," "Tin Cup," and "Field of Dreams." He also has a passion for Westerns, winning Academy Awards for his sweeping romance between a Union solider and Native American woman, "Dances with Wolves." In recent years, he starred in "Yellowstone," a modern drama about a powerful ranching magnate. Most recently, he released his passion project, "Horizon: An American Saga -- Chapter 1," which flopped at the box office, but gained some traction on VOD.
Like many up-and-coming actors, Costner's career began with a lot of bit parts or Z-grade movies with shoestring budgets. There was one role that could have opened the door to his eventual stardom earlier, but unfortunately, his scenes ended up on the cutting room floor. "The Big Chill" was...

Tom Hardyis no stranger to war movies. In fact, that’s how the actor got his start. Back in 2001, the actor joined an insanely stacked call sheet alongside legends like Ewan McGregor and Josh Hartnett in Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down. Perhaps that’s part of the reason why, when he was asked about his favorite films, the actor responded with a classic war pic at the top of the list. According to Far Out, Hardy previously heralded Oliver Stone’s iconic Vietnam War-centered feature, Platoon, as his number one picture. Now, audiences can head to Prime Video to check out the film, as it finds itself streaming alongside the platform’s extended list of content.
During his interview, Hardy was sure to mention the near impossibility of picking a favorite flick, naming other filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Gaspar Noé, and more as the best in the biz.

Will Smith famously turned down the role of Neo in The Matrix, a casting that helped make Keanu Reeves a bigger star than ever while spawning a major movie franchise. It's one of two major roles that Smith regrets rejecting, as he similarly turned down a chance to star in one of Christopher Nolan's biggest films.
Smith shared the story of his near-casting in an interview with Kiss Xtra. He was asked about turning down The Matrix, admitting that it still "hurts" when thinking about how successful the movie went on to become without him. Smith then shared how the only other role he rejected that still really bothers him in retrospect is Inception, Nolan's sci-fi action movie that was released to immense success in 2010.

Frederick Forsyth, a British author of thrillers who frequently made the bestseller lists, sold 70 million books and saw his novels “The Day of the Jackal,” “The Odessa File” and “The Dogs of War,” among others, adapted into films, died on Monday at his home in Jordans, England. He was 86 years old. The New York Times confirmed Forsyth’s death, which his literary representative, Jonathan Lloyd, said “followed a short illness.”
“The Day of the Jackal” was adapted into a 1973 film directed by Fred Zinnemann and starring Edward Fox and Michael Lonsdale. Fox played the professional assassin known only as the “Jackal” who is hired to assassinate French President Charles de Gaulle in the summer of 1963. The film was a critical and box office success, and was also turned into a series in 2024 starring Eddie Redmayne.

Frederick Forsyth, the British novelist behind The Day Of The Jackal, The Odessa File, The Dogs Of War and several other books that were turned into movies or TV shows, died today in Kent, England, his agent Jonathan Lloyd told the BBC. He was 86.
Forsyth called on his experiences as a fighter pilot, spy and journalist to bring authenticity to his novels — the first of which, 1971’s The Day of the Jackal, was penned while he was unemployed. It was adapted into a 1973 film director by multiple Oscar winner Fred Zinneman and a 2024 TV series starring Eddie Redmayne. Set in the turbulent year of 1963, it followed an assassination plot against French president Charles de Gaulle. The 1973 movie also was remade as The Jackal (1997), starring Bruce Willis and Richard Gere.

Action movies have a way of gripping us—fast-paced, tension-filled, heavy on adrenaline. Among these, the Sniper franchise stands out. It first hit bull’s-eye in 1993, positioning Marine sharpshooter Thomas Beckett (Tom Berenger) as a cool, calculated force in the jungles of Panama. Since then, it’s grown into an 11-film saga carrying action fanatics through covert ops, betrayal, and explosive missions. The 2017 entry, Sniper: Ultimate Kill, has found fresh fame on Netflix, reigniting interest in the franchise.
These movies pack precision sniping, suspense, father-son dynamics, and globetrotting mayhem. This guide explores the series chronologically—where it all began, how it evolved, why each entry matters, and where to stream the current hit (hint: Netflix).

Before NCIS became the procedural powerhouse it is today, the role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs was up for grabs, and boy, was it a star-studded showdown. Imagine walking into an audition room and seeing not one, but two Oscar-winners eyeing the same role. But Mark Harmon didn’t just walk in, he owned it.
While the others had shiny trophies, Harmon brought that quiet intensity and those “don’t mess with me” eyes that’d define Gibbs for nearly two decades. And just like that, Hollywood’s most unexpected casting twist was sealed. Curious who the A-listers he beat were? Let’s find out…

Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 classic is an unquestionable pillar of the film industry. Few movies have ever stomped so freely between genres and tones like RoboCop does. Picking up a bevy of blood on its mechanical boots along the way. You won’t find many, if any, films in history that can simultaneously sell toys like hotcakes, critique corporate greed, and feature a bad guy getting shot in the junk. Even the B-movie moments feel like spectacle, fueled by a brazen disrespect for the status quo, we just can’t get enough of. Kinda sounds like we’re talking about a punk rock horror movie. In some ways… we are. RoboCop’s journey has been documented six ways from Sunday. Including the impressively in-depth, four-hour-and-then-some 2023 documentary RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop. Today, we’re going to look at the classic under a bloodier lens. And answer the question: does Robo really want an Oreo?...

The long-running action war franchise Sniper has been around for over two decades. The first entry, 1993's Sniper, starred Tom Berenger as expert American gunner Thomas Beckett, alongside Billy Zane as Richard Miller.
Although the original film received poor reviews from critics and audiences, it was a commercial hit and kicked off a franchise of direct-to-video movies that currently includes 11 installments. The latest entry, Sniper: The Last Stand, was released on Jan. 21, 2025 and it didn't make a splash. However, following its recent release on Netflix, the action film debuted in ninth place on the platform's U.S. streaming charts, per Tudum.
Sniper: The Last Stand hit Netflix on May 6, a few months after the film's release on digital. The movie's success in its first week, between May 5 and May 11, proves there's still interest in the action franchise, although the movie didn't have a huge impact during its January release. Since...

Back in 2023, two films from a franchise you'd probably never heard of hit the Netflix Top 10: "Sniper: Assassin's End" and "Sniper: Ultimate Kill." These movies constitute just a small part of a long-running saga that began with 1993's "Sniper," a Tom Berenger actioner that created a sprawling direct-to-video franchise that now comprises 11 films. Even though Berenger departed after the third instalment, Sony has been churning out "Sniper" movies with alarming consistency ever since 1993.
Berenger played Master Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Beckett, an elite sharpshooter who in "Sniper" loses his partner Doug Papich (Aden Young) on a mission in Panama. Papich is replaced by another sniper in the form of Richard Miller (Billy Zane), who is Beckett's superior but has nowhere near his subordinate's level of real-world experience. The pair is then forced to work together as they embark on a mission to kill Panamanian rebel Miguel Alvarez (Frederick Miragliotta). Ever since,...

Terrific sniper scenes can be found in all kinds of movies, from action and war films to thrillers and even comedies. There are fun scenes like the ridiculous curved bullets in "Wanted" and wild train shot in "Gemini Man," and there are gut-wrenching sequences like the ones in "Saving Private Ryan" (one of the most brutal scenes in the movie) and "Full Metal Jacket." They're just scenes, though, in films focused elsewhere -- but there are other movies where the sniper sits as an integral element throughout.
Sniper movies put the shooter and their rifle front and center as main characters. Some are heroes, some are villains, and others can exist in the nebulous space between. All of them, though, are integral parts of the story being told. Now, keep reading for a look at the 15 best sniper movies of all time, ranked.

Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we talk about the great Debra Winger! Our B-Sides include Legal Eagles, Betrayed, The Sheltering Sky, and Forget Paris. Our guest is the inestimable Murtada Elfadl, Culture Writer, Critic, and Film Curator.
We discuss Winger’s stratospheric rise to stardom, her indescribable performance in Terms of Endearment, and her (unfair?) reputation for being “difficult.” There’s also plenty of discussion about Rosanna Arquette’s documentary Searching for Debra Winger, a film in which Arquette speaks with many famous actresses about aging in Hollywood. War films are often built around spectacle or honorability. But Oliver Stone’s Platoon rejects both. Released nearly four decades ago, the film still stands as one of the most disturbing and personal depictions of war ever put to screen. Based on his own experiences in the Vietnam War, Stone shows what happens when people are placed in extreme conditions and left to figure it out for themselves.
There’s no hero’s journey here, just a young soldier trying to survive an environment designed to break him down. Platoon doesn’t ask what war means but shows what it does. How it divides, dehumanizes and reshapes those caught inside it. And how, for some, the greatest threat isn’t the enemy, but the people standing beside them.

One of the longest (and most underrated) action movie franchises is about to enter its 12th installment. The likes of James Bond, the Fast and Furious, and more have delighted audiences for years and years with their ever-growing lore and multiple sequels, but many action fans continue to sleep on the Sniper series. Now, following the release of the 11th outing, Sniper: The Last Stand earlier this year, lead actor Chad Michael Collins has now revealed that another explosive installment in the SniperVerse is already locked and loaded.
Thanking fans for their ongoing support, Collins took to X/Twitter to make the announcement. A while back, we shared a Best Movie You Never Saw video on the action thriller Sniper, which was given a theatrical release in 1993 and spawned a direct-to-video franchise that is continuing to this day. In fact, the eleventh film in the franchise, Sniper: The Last Stand, was just given a digital release this past January – and two months later, franchise star Chad Michael Collins has taken to social media to confirm that the next sequel, which we’ll just refer to as Sniper 12 for now, is already in production!
The details – plot, director, writer, etc. – are all still under wraps. As of right now, all we know is that Sniper 12 is currently filming and Collins is back in the role of sniper Brandon Beckett and is joined in the cast by Ryan Robbins, who co-starred in the last four sequels as Agent Zero.

War dramas often fall into the same traps, focussing on emotional moments, love stories amidst chaos, and soldiers dealing with personal losses. While these elements can be powerful, they often risk overshadowing the essence of war – the strategy, battles, and the sheer brutality of it all. That’s where Gettysburg stands apart. Running over four hours, this Civil War epic doesn’t get bogged down in clichéd moments. Instead, it delves into the Battle of Gettysburg, portraying every strategic move and life-altering decision in detail.
Adapted from Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Killer Angels, Gettysburg doesn’t waste time on subplots or romantic distractions. What it does offer is an authentic portrayal of one of the bloodiest conflicts in American history, bringing to life the soldiers and generals that changed the course of the Civil War. In a genre often known for its melodrama, Gettysburg boldly stands as an exception.

In hindsight, it's impossible to imagine anyone but Mark Harmon in the role of gruff "NCIS" boss Leroy Jethro Gibbs. It wasn't exactly a career-reigniting role for the actor, who had already built a legacy on shows like "St. Elsewhere" and "Chicago Hope" before joining the CBS military police procedural's inaugural 2003 season. However, it soon became apparent that Gibbs would be his defining role. Harmon embodied the character in a way that made him the unquestionable centerpiece of the ensemble cast throughout his 19 seasons with the show. He left "NCIS" in 2021, but Gibbs perseveres: In 2024, CBS rolled out the prequel show "NCIS: Origins," with Austin Stowell playing young Gibbs while Harmon narrates, "Young Sheldon"-style.
Knowing Harmon's importance to the "NCIS" franchise, it may be surprising to find out that the people behind the show didn't call his agent the second they conceived the character of Gibbs. In 2023, the makers...

When it comes to bringing the Western genre to television, perhaps the most consistent medium for success is the miniseries. These productions often contain visuals and performers of feature film-level quality, with a story and length that surpass them. A miniseries allows a story to develop over an extended (albeit still limited) time frame but without the long-term commitment of standard television. Western miniseries are great explorations of the scope and scale of the genre and can offer a distinct outlook on historical events. As such, the Hallmark Channel miniseries, Johnson County War, retold the infamous titular Wyoming conflict back in 2002, with a stellar cast that included Tom Berenger, Burt Reynolds, and Luke Perry. While this two-part event has largely fallen out of the public eye, it's one worth revisiting for a few reasons...

In a pivotal scene from Dario Argento's thriller, The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, Sam Dalmas is helpless as he stands behind a glass door, watching a victim writhing in agony from what appears to have been an attempted murder. The aspect of voyeurism is closely tied to the thriller, especially in classics such as Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window. Sliver, released in 1993 during the short-lived run of erotic thrillers that found varying levels of success following Basic Instinct, encompassed themes of voyeurism and obsession that have always been prominent in the genre.
Dismissed by many critics at the time of its release, Sliver is one of many erotic thrillers that deserves far more praise than ridicule. Some who had seen Sharon Stone's performance as femme fatale Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct were taken aback by what some described as a more "passive" role. While Stone's portrayal of...

When David S. Ward's "Major League" slid into multiplexes on April 7, 1989, a lot of people wrote it off as a pro baseball clone of the minor-league-set "Bull Durham." A wise veteran catcher (Tom Berenger) with bad knees looking down the barrel of a forced retirement? Check. A screwy rookie pitcher (Charlie Sheen) with a flamethrower for an arm and no semblance of control? Check. A superstitious slugger (Dennis Haysbert) who demands to sacrifice a live chicken to get him out of a hitting slump? Check.
The very existence of these familiar elements was enough for many of the nation's critics to dismiss "Major League" as a meatheaded comedy. Moviegoers did not concur. The film grossed $50 million in the U.S. on an $11 million budget, and earned an A- CinemaScore before turning into a home video/pay cable sensation. The upcoming Sniper: The Last Stand is the eleventh(!) entry in the series, and I am weirdly excited about it. So, a quick history lesson on the Sniper movie franchise. It began with the original film in 1993, where Tom Berenger played a veteran sniper taking Billy Zane's rookie under his wing for an assassination mission. Sniper is the kind of film you would catch late at night and half remember in the years ahead, but when Sniper 2 arrived nearly a decade later, it kicked off a seemingly unstoppable cult saga.
Berenger's Beckett was the lead for the first two sequels before handing the keys over to Chad Michael Collins as Brandon Beckett, the estranged son of Berenger's character. I'm proud to say I've been with the series the whole way through, with the seventh entry - which finally united Berenger, Collins and Zane - feeling like the Avengers: Endgame of the Sniper series.

NCIS has long raged as one of the most praiseworthy crime dramas of all time, and one of the major reasons behind its success besides its outstanding plotlines is the star-studded cast the show sported. Throughout the time it has been on air, the series cast the most perfect actors in the most accurate roles, with Mark Harmon leading it as Leroy Jethro Gibbs for almost two decades.
NCIS. | Credits: CBS.
That said, Harmon’s casting, for one, continues to sit finely with fans worldwide, even after almost half a decade since the actor’s departure from the show in 2021. But the surprising part is that showrunner Don Bellisario wasn’t 100 percent on board from the start for casting Harmon as Gibbs, even though even the casting director had her eyes on the actor right from the start.

I'm doing this for nostalgia's sake, cause over thirty years I watched the very first Sniper movie with Tom Berenger and Billy Zane and was completely in love with it. Yellowstone fans are still divided about the show’s finale, and whether Kevin Costner ought to have been around until the very end. Behind-the-scenes disputes were to blame as the actor wanted to be granted ample time to finish filming Horizon: An American Saga, but Taylor Sheridan and his team wouldn’t stop everything for him. So, how does the actor feel about how things turned out? When The Daily Mail asked him about it, he gave a straightforward answer.

Hollywood is full of war movies filled with the gallantry and fiery combat viewers have come to expect with the genre across numerous conflicts throughout history. However, not as many of these films are based on true stories as one might expect, instead taking a historical battle and fabricating a story around it. Whenever a war movie has a real-world basis inspiring it, there is a greater emotional weight in knowing that some version of these events were experienced by actual people. That isn't to say that every war movie based on true stories is necessarily historically accurate, but the heightened verisimilitude still elevates the narrative.
Beyond direct adaptations of historical events and accounts, there are also many war movies inspired by anecdotes from incidents in actual armed conflicts. Though the stories derived from these experiences are largely fictional, there's enough of a real-world basis that grounds the movies in history and genuine emotion.

The Haunting of Hill House features an ensemble cast of many talented actors, and two of the stars surprisingly worked together eight years before Mike Flanagan's hit horror miniseries. Netflix's 2018 supernatural drama TV show is loosely based on Shirley Jackson's 1959 book of the same name. It follows the Crain family, who lived in the haunted Hill House in the 1990s, and their supernatural encounters both in the past and present.
