The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has done lots of good for the movie industry, as both a business and an art form. Most notably, since the first ceremony in 1929, they annually honor a crop of the year's best films with the Academy Awards, colloquially known as the Oscars. These awards are often wonderful barometers of cinematic quality, drawing audiences toward films they might've otherwise never seen. But sometimes -- or, depending on your point of view, quite often -- the Academy gets it wrong. They ignore what's obviously the superior film of the year in favor of something milquetoast, suspect, or otherwise overrated.
Some of these notable films, whose wins almost immediately received cultural asterisks, include "Green Book," "Crash," and "Driving Miss Daisy." But others still need a touch of critical drubbing, and today is the day to humble these disproportionately honored flicks. With all this in mind,...

Wednesday Season 1: Why Christina Ricci Replaced Thora Birch Midway Through Filming ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Jenna Ortega is back again as Wednesday Addams in season 2 of the Netflix series Wednesday. While the fans get immersed in the new plot twists and the chaos, let us take you back to the season 1 scenario where Christina Ricci, who can be recognized as Wednesday Addams for portraying the lead character in the 90s Addams Family, replaced Thora Birch in the rebooted version of Tim Burton’s series.
Thora Birch was supposed to play the only ‘Normie’ of Nevermore and Wednesday’s dorm mother, who also inclined to botany, Tamara Novak. However, after filming most of the initial part, she left the show when Ricci came in to take over the role. Although Birch’s character was scrapped, Ricci was given a new role as Marilyn Thornhill, who had similar characteristics.

Actor Doug Jones has been through a lot in a career that has frequently required him to contort his body, wear outlandish costumes, and get encased in monster prosthetics. However, it's possible that his strangest on-screen act came in one of his earliest roles, when he had to hold live moths in his mouth during the filming of the 1993 horror comedy classic Hocus Pocus. Jones discussed the unusual stunt at the FanX Atl Comics Convention this weekend at a panel moderated by Collider's Maggie Lovitt.
In the scene, Jones' character, a 400-year-old zombie named Billy Butcherson, cuts open the stitches holding his mouth together:
"That was before CG, when computer graphics were not nearly good enough. So we did it for real. So I had three moths in my mouth...they had to build a sheath for it, they call it a dental dam, so upper and lower pieces made of latex,...

It's been two years since Disney confirmed a third trip to Salem was in the works following the success of Hocus Pocus 2, yet the Sanderson Sisters' brooms remain grounded, according to Sarah Jessica Parker. During her appearance on Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens Live on Sunday, the star provided a rare update on the witchy threequel when answering a viewer question from two London-based fans. The good news is that the film is still happening, with Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy likely to reprise their roles alongside her. However, there's been little movement since the initial announcement, meaning viewers won't be seeing the Sandersons again anytime soon.
"No more developments, other than we would like to do it," Parker said during the show. As far as where the film was in the development process, she reiterated that, "We would like to do it, and we've been having some conversations.

If you’re hoping for a quick follow-up to Hocus Pocus 2, you might want to sit down and take a deep breath. Sarah Jessica Parker, one of the stars of the franchise, gave a surprising update about Hocus Pocus 3 that suggests the movie isn’t moving forward very fast.
More than two years after Disney announced that a third Hocus Pocus movie was in the works—following the big streaming success of Hocus Pocus 2 in 2022—Parker spoke about the sequel during a recent appearance on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live.
When asked by fans from London if the next film was going to be made soon, Parker joked, “Um, well, for the expats in London… no more developments, other than we would like to do it.” She added again, “We would like to do it,” and said that there have been some early talks about the project,...

Sarah Jessica Parker Shares Unexpected ‘Hocus Pocus 3’ Update as Sequel Remains in Early Development
It looks like fans waiting for Hocus Pocus 3 will have to stay patient, because the movie isn’t moving forward anytime soon. Sarah Jessica Parker recently gave an update that might disappoint some people hoping for a quick return of the Sanderson Sisters.
During an appearance on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, Parker was asked by two fans in London if there was any news about the next Hocus Pocus movie. Rumors had been floating around that filming could start soon, possibly in London itself. But Parker’s answer was simple and clear.
She said, “Um, well, for the expats in London… no more developments, other than we would like to do it.” She then repeated, “We would like to do it.” She also mentioned that some conversations were happening behind the scenes but didn’t give any real details about what those talks involved or who was involved,...

Corenswet was recently thrust into the public eye when he was cast as Clark Kent in James Gunn's new superhero flick "Superman." The 32-year-old actor, however, has been acting since he was a child, having appeared in various stage productions as early as age nine. He acted throughout his teen years and eventually attended Juilliard, where he graduated with a Bfa. Corenswet also dabbled in writing and directing, having helmed and starred in a short film called "Following Chase" in 2011, and co-wrote and produced the online comedy show "Moe & Jerryweather" in 2014. Two years later, he starred in an unpurchased pilot for a TV series called "The Tap," directed by Rob Reiner. He...

James Gunn’s Superman is about to hit the theaters, and fans are excited to see David Corenswet’s iteration of the character. The actor will follow in the footsteps of Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill to play the titular role in the Dcu. While the odds were stacked against him earlier, Corenswet has proved himself to be amazing in the role from the promotional materials.
Before he put on the Superman suit, Corenswet appeared in a bunch of movies like Pearl and Look Both Ways and TV shows like Lady in the Lake. He played lead roles in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix shows, Hollywood and The Politician. He also starred in the HBO limited series, We Own This City, from the writers and executive producers of The Wire.

The new film Thirsty is a dogged, provocative, and ambitious take on upstart political ambition and the double standards regarding women in politics. The movie is never afraid to show contradictions, with racial, gender, and political divides that are subtle and sneak up on you.
While the film would have benefited greatly by leaning into the natural dark comedic sensibilities that were trying to come to the surface, what you have instead is an idealistic view of the political process and the collision of sobering reality that comes with such ambitions.
Thirsty is a film that rests on the shoulders of one of the year’s best performances. Jamie Neumann is so good here that it will likely go unrecognized, precisely because she is honest and unsparing. Her performance is utterly devoid of sentimentality, focused solely on presenting something politicians rarely do: the truth.

Politics continues to trump business at this year’s Cannes film festival, with little in the way of deals out of the Marché, but lots of activist agitation on the red carpet and beyond.
Cannes’ first weekend, traditionally the period when the bidding wars begin and the first big buys are announced, has been almost frighteningly quiet. There was a single big deal — Mubi’s $24 million multi-territory deal, including North America, the U.K., Latin America and other countries — for the Lynne Ramsay’s Jennifer Lawrence Robert Pattinson starrer Die, My Love. It was a major deal for a finished film but also threw into sharp relief the lack of major pre-sales at Cannes so far, despite a market featuring jam-packed with hot packages.
The cautious, wait-and-see approach from buyers — already in evidence in Sundance and Berlin — continues amid growing uncertainty over financing and distribution models and, let’s face it,...

There’s a beguiling dichotomy in Kristen Stewart’s accomplished first feature as writer-director — between the dreamlike haze and fragmentation of memory and the raw wound of trauma so vivid it will always be with you. Adapted from the influential 2011 memoir by Lidia Yuknavitch, The Chronology of Water is challenging material, an unflinching account of childhood sexual abuse followed by years of vanishing — into addiction, sexual experimentation and self-destruction before the author found her voice by channeling her pain into writing.
Stewart also appears to have found her voice, announcing the seriousness of her intentions not with auteurist self-importance but with unimpeachable commitment to honoring her subject’s story.
That subject, Lidia, played by Imogen Poots in a daring high-wire act, represents not just herself and her fellow-survivor sister Claudia (Thora Birch) but countless women shamed into silence or damaged beyond repair by violations of their bodies. It’s a visceral,...

Kristen Stewart’s The Chronology of Water translates Lidia Yuknavitch’s fragmented memoir into a cinematic tapestry that pulses with raw intensity. The film traces Yuknavitch’s journey from a competitive swimmer grappling with familial violence to a writer seeking to reclaim her own story. Stewart abandons linear exposition: present-day crises collide with Super-8 childhood recollections, each segment anchored by Lidia’s murmured voiceover.
Imogen Poots embodies Lidia with striking authenticity, her athletic grace in water scenes contrasting sharply with her haunted eyes on land. When Poots slices through rippling waves, the camera tightens to capture every muscle’s tension—an unspoken language of escape. In quieter moments, close-ups of trembling hands or furrowed brows reveal layers of defiance and vulnerability that prose alone could never convey.

Donald Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on “foreign-made” films, launched just ahead of Cannes, went off like a bomb under the already shaky foundations of the indie industry. Just how much damage has been done will only be possible to assess post-market when the dust has settled.

Okay, now Kristen Stewart is just showing off.
The Oscar nominated “Spencer” star steps behind the camera, writing and directing “The Chronology of Water,” which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. A portrait of pain, rebirth and reclamation, the film’s heartbeat comes from Stewart’s skillful and natural filmmaking. It is bolstered by two veteran actors we haven’t seen do something like this in years, Jim Belushi and Thora Birch.
Adapted from Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir, it recounts her story of going from a champion swimmer, to an addict, and later a writer. Stewart’s directorial debut has an avant-garde sensibility that’s part “The Basketball Diaries,” part Terrence Malick reverie, with a dash of Jim Jarmusch’s cool restraint and an undercurrent of rebellion that flows through it. “I bled, I peed, I cried, and vomited.” This sentence comes at the end of the second paragraph of The Chronology of Water, Lidia Yuknavitch’s extraordinary, extraordinarily raw 2011 memoir about growing up, nearly giving up, and straining to getting a grip on a traumatic past. It follows one of the most striking openings of any autobiography — an extended description of her holding her daughter moments after the stillborn baby has been delivered. Kristen Stewart has been talking about bringing Yuknavitch’s book to the screen for years. But she...

An emotional Stewart embraced her actors with hugs and high-fives as the ovation carried on. She later bounded across the auditorium to give Cannes head Thierry Frémaux a long hug.
“I don’t have anything else to say; I left it all on the screen,” Stewart said in part. “Just thank you all for being here. Seriously, we finished the movie five minutes ago — it’s not even done. We got so lucky, and I’m so grateful to be here.”
She then gestured to her star, Imogen Poots, to take the mic, saying, “Truly, your body is the movie, I’m giving it to you.”

Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut “The Chronology of Water” premiered at Cannes Film Festival to a just over four-minute standing ovation on Friday night — and left many in the crowd wiping their eyes.
Imogen Poots’ knockout performance was certainly a highlight of Stewart’s adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s 2011 memoir of the same name, but just as notable was her directing style — raw, artsy and unflinching. Poots stars as Yuknavitch in Stewart’s non-linear take on the bestselling writer’s life, which includes shocking scenes of sexual abuse by her father and her spiral into drug use juxtaposed with the poetic salvation she found from being in water.
As the house lights went up, Stewart — dressed in a chic white short suit and matching baseball cap — hugged everyone in her cast and crew and directed the attention toward them. After kissing her wife Dylan Meyer, she allowed the spotlight to shine on her,...

Kristen Stewart’s feature directorial debut The Chronology of Water unspooled at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday night and was greeted by a 6½-minute ovation by an enthusiastic audience.
Stewart’s long-gestating project, adapted from Lidia Yuknavitch’s bestselling 2011 memoir, went down well in the room, and Stewart was mobbed by her fans in the Grand Lumiere Theater, making it tough to get out of the venue.

Imogen Poots takes the lead in Stewart’s choppy but compelling adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir of abuse and sexual uncertainty
Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut, adapted by her from the 2011 abuse memoir by Lidia Yuknavitch, is running a very high temperature, though never exactly collapsing into outright feverishness or torpor. It’s a poetry-slam of pain and autobiographical outrage, recounting a writer’s journey towards recovering the raw material of experience to be sifted and recycled into literary success.
The present day catastrophes of failed relationships, drink and drugs are counterpointed with Super-8 memories and epiphanies of childhood with extreme closeups on remembered details and wry, murmuring voiceovers. It borders on cliche a little, but there is compassion and storytelling ambition here.
Lidia herself, well played by Imogen Poots, is a young woman who was abused in her teenage years by her clenched and furious architect father (Michael Epp...

As an actor, Kristen Stewart brings a restlessly kinetic energy to every role she plays; even when still, she still seems to be vibrating with her own intensity. As a director, she infuses The Chronology of Water – an adaptation of an impressionistic memoir by cult writer Lidia Yuknavitch, screening in the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section – with that same personal electricity, blasting what could be a conventionally sequential biopic into splinters, shards and ripples that can be pieced together as we go. Or not, of course: those bits of memory can simply be embraced in all their vivid, meticulously planned disarray. If it is a biopic, it’s not like any you’ve seen before.
Imogen Poots plays Lidia from her first scenes as a schoolgirl swimming champion to her eventual emergence as a writer with a settled life: home, partner, child and a desk with a view over water.

When famous actors decide to try their hand at filmmaking, the results can be — and often are — unremarkable by design. Timid and safe with a network TV aesthetic that screams “I’m a lot more afraid behind the camera than I am in front of it.” Not so of Kristen Stewart’s “The Chronology of Water.” Not in the slightest. Some movies are shot. This one was directed.
Which isn’t to suggest this aggressively fragmented adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir should be graded on a curve because its famous auteur dared to film on 16mm, or even because she had the skill required to adapt her source material with the same febrile porousness that made it such a striking piece of literature in the first place (a process that required the “Clouds of Sils Maria” star to invent her own language of elliptical thoughts and extreme close-ups). On the contrary,...

Which American Beauty Scene Changed Thora Birch’s Career? (Photo Credit –Facebook)
Thora Birch faded away from the Hollywood scene after she stepped away from the silver screen, leaving behind a legacy that echoed long after her exit. From the get go, she was one of those rare child actors who seemed carved for something big and early on, she held her own alongside the mighty Harrison Ford in 1994 film, Clear and Present Danger.
However, it was American Beauty in 1999 that truly cemented her status. It was a film of cinematic acclaim, which went on to snag five Oscars and eight nominations. Birch’s portrayal of Jane Burnham, the withdrawn teenager with a bruised soul and a sharp gaze, left a mark few could shake off.

Is life a comedy or a tragedy? Artists from all over the world try to find the right answers to this age-old question. Kafka sees life as endless suffering, whereas Charlie Chaplin sees life as harsh and tries to create a good laugh about it. The question perhaps starts from the ‘fall of man,’ where Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden and exiled to Earth. Due to this, human life is perhaps inherently a tragic one—a life filled with suffering and sorrow. In season 1 of “True Detective,” the character Rust Cohle identifies it as the ‘tragic misstep in evolution.’ According to him, “We are creatures that should not exist, by natural law.”
But there may be something beautiful about this existence—an existence where we are able to be happy, but in absurd terms, just like Sisyphus in Greek mythology, who was eternally damned to...

Yellowstone’sJamie Duttonis arguably Wes Benton’s most popular and notable role to date. However, before he became the misunderstood adopted son of the Dutton family, Bentley made his name in one of the most controversial Oscar-winning films in history. In 1999, Bentley starred in American Beauty, a psychological dark comedy that made his name in Hollywood.
Playing Ricky Fitts, a role that would influence his later works and characters, the film’s success, which included sweeping the 72nd Academy Awards and becoming a defining film of the late 90s, launched Bentley into a range of roles in both film and television. From playing a manipulative Head Gamemaker in The Hunger Games to several characters in American Horror Story, Bentley's career expanded across genres.

Interview with the Vampire was the first adaptation in the Immortal Universe, which premiered in 2022 to critical acclaim. The series will return with Season 3, which will cover the second book in The Vampire Chronicles series, The Vampire Lestat. The second series is Mayfair Witches, which premiered in 2023 and is currently in its second season, which has also introduced the first mini crossover in Season 2, Episode 3, "Cover of Mirrors." In a behind-the-scenes video for the episode on AMC+, showrunner Esta Spalding explained that this could lead to a "real amazing monster universe."

The problem being Lasher is also hunting down Mayfair witches/family members, the most recent being Thora Birch's Gifford Mayfair. The sneak peek concludes with Rowan explaining to Cortland that he just needs to "stick to the script," to which he replies, "you're the boss."...

Lasher (Jack Huston) is on the hunt for Mayfair women in Season 2 of the supernatural thriller, and unfortunately, so far, no one has been able to stop him. In “Ten of Swords,” the most recent episode of Mayfair Witches, Lasher's latest victim was Gifford Mayfair, portrayed by Thora Birch, who had already been doomed in Lasher (1993), the second book of Anne Rice’s The Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy. Despite not having any magical powers, Gifford is quite the personality, according to Birch, who described her character to TV Insider as “prominent” and one of the wealthy members of the family.
