‘Captain Hook: The Cursed Tides’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: Richard Rowden, Sean Cronin, Munraj Bhachu, Ewen Weatherburn, Destiny Viva, John Craggs, Brandon Ashplant, Cameron Ashplant | Written and Directed by Lars Janssen

It’s not often you get a reinterpretation of Captain Hook that casts him as something approaching a tragic antihero, let alone a horror-tinged outlaw seeking redemption. But Captain Hook: The Cursed Tides, the latest from writer/director Lars Janssen (Underground), leans confidently into this premise, and while not all of it lands, the result is a brisk and moody adventure with just enough bite to keep genre fans intrigued.

Running at a lean 90 minutes, the film opens on a surprisingly visceral note: Hook (Richard Rowden) suffers a brutal defeat at the hands of Admiral Smee (Sean Cronin), who slices off Hook’s hand and leaves him for dead. It’s an origin beat that plays less like swashbuckling fantasy and more like gritty revenge horror. Hook’s retreat to the windswept,...

The month-long schedule promises a mix of modern thrillers, retro Westerns and cult classics, alongside the arrival of Charlie’s Angels, which lands on Legend for the first time.

The schedule kicks off on 7 August with Acceleration, a 2019 thriller starring Dolph Lundgren as Vladik Zorich, a ruthless Los Angeles crime lord who dominates the city’s underworld. When his trusted operative Rhona Zyocki, played by Natalie Burn, betrays him, Zorich retaliates by abducting her young son. What follows is a high-stakes fight for survival as Rhona turns against her former employer in a bid to save her child.

First reactions to I Know What You Did Last Summer say the sequel hooks audiences with camp, rough writing, and fun kills
With horror franchises like Scream, The Toxic Avenger, and Friday the 13th coming back into the spotlight, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood got Jennifer Love Hewitt and the band back together for another chapter of I Know What You Did Last Summer, the whodunit horror series with sexy stars, gory kills, and the angriest fisherman with a Captain Hook complex. The first reactions to director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s sequel are making the rounds, making the latest Summer flick sound like a mixed bag of nostalgia and questionable writing, but all-around fun!

While we’ve heard I Know What You Did Last Summer is Golden Razzies material, others appear genuinely pleased with the film and act like it’s the greatest thing since McDonald’s put Snack Wraps back on the menu.

#IKnowWhatYouDidLastSummer stuck the freaking landing. This is a franchise that I have long waited to...

15 Best Robin Williams Movies, Ranked
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

One of America's most beloved actors for over 30 years was Robin Williams, whose inherently humorous talents were elevated from his classical training at Julliard. After virtually being picked up off the street for a memorable role in "Happy Days" leading to the full spin-off series "Morky & Mindy," Williams became an overnight sensation in 1978. The funnyman then parlayed his success as a stand-up comic and sitcom actor into starring in feature films by 1980. Though best known for his comedic projects, Williams showed a stunning range across his career, especially in notably darker and sinister roles later in his filmography.

Whether it was leaning into family-friend humor, both in live-action and animated projects, or channeling his talents into more dramatic fare, Williams always brought his A-game. In doing so, the late actor left a body of work that continues to stand the...

Dina Meyer and Casper Van Dien in Starship Troopers (1997)
15 sci-fi and fantasy movies that should be remade
Dina Meyer and Casper Van Dien in Starship Troopers (1997)
Remakes are all the rage right now, and there are plenty of sci-fi and fantasy films from the past that can use one!

Hollywood has always had an affinity for remakes, but it's really picked up in recent years. That includes Disney’s live-action adaptations of their past animated movies, with Dreamworks following suit with How To Train Your Dragon. There’s also word of plans for remakes of Starship Troopers, among others.

Of course, some folks are worried about remaking a beloved film, as we’ve seen a lot of crummy examples over the years. There are many sci-fi/fantasy movies that should never be remade, from classics like Forbidden Planet to cult favorites such as The Last Starfighter.

But there are also many sci-fi and fantasy movies that could benefit from a remake. The originals are good, but they could use better effects, actors, and storytelling. These are...

Jason Isaacs Blames a 2003 Iconic Role for His Lowest Point, and It’s Hiding on Prime Video
Image
Over the years, Hollywood has witnessed several A-tier actors who have earned their places in the entertainment industry. One such name is Jason Isaacs, who is most renowned for his portrayal of Lucius Malfoy in J.K. Rowling’s renowned fictional fantasy film series, Harry Potter.

However, time and again he has proved that he’s not a one-trick pony with his superior acting range and how he can mold himself in any genre he wants to. As a matter of fact, Isaacs has proved himself in sci-fi, drama, action, and many more, making him one of a kind.

With several awards and iconic roles under his belt, he feels differently about a role that has affected his career trajectory. Recently, the veteran actor sat down with Variety, where he mentioned how working in Peter Pan was a massive blow.

Jason Isaacs’ iconic role in Peter Pan was a “fall from grace.

Jason Isaacs Reveals Which Children's Film Almost Destroyed His Career
Image
Jason Isaacs has become a prominent actor known for The White Lotus and, of course, Harry Potter. One film that came out during his Harry Potter years nearly destroyed his career: Peter Pan (2003).

Isaacs played the dual roles of Captain Hook and George Darling in the film, as is traditional for adaptions of the beloved book by J.M. Barrie. Joining him were a pair of newcomers: Rachel Hurd-Wood as Wendy Darling and Jeremy Sumpter as Peter Pan. The stage was set for a triumph, but unfortunately the film flopped. Isaacs remembered that difficult time while appearing on Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Dinner With Me podcast (via Yahoo!) recently.

"It's a beautiful film. And it destroyed everybody's career. It took home five and a half cents and a bubblegum wrapper," Isaacs said. It was all over for everybody. I couldn't get a walk-on on CSI: Hendon. I was thinking, 'I need plastic surgery.

Disney neglects multiple villains in new development
Image
It's no secret that Disney has created some of the most wicked and wonderful villains in modern fiction. However, as much as we love, hate, and love hating the likes of Maleficent, Ursula, and Jafar, it feels like Disney is neglecting many of its evil icons.

At the parks, characters like Gaston, Captain Hook, and the Ugly Stepsisters can be found semi-regularly, but there's more that Disney could do with an entire expansion dedicated to them. Granted, it would be impossible to bring every last one of our favorite villains to the parks as Meet and Greets, but Disney certainly has the resources to give us more than the bare minimum.

Disney needs more villains

If Villains: Unfairly Ever After is any indication of what Disney can do with the villains as full-fledged characters, it's clear where some improvements can be made. Captain Hook, Jafar, and more look great when...

'Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare' Scares Up Digital Release Date
Image
Among the Twisted Childhood Universe, which converts classic fairytales into gory slashers, Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare is the scariest with its sophisticated violence but extremely gory visuals. The franchise started in 2023 with Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and has given three movies, which fans of the horror sub-genre love. Now audiences can watch the feature at the ease of their home and decide for themselves as Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare makes its digital debut.

The franchise’s official X handle recently revealed a clip from the feature to make the announcement, and the chilling clip is enough to grab the audience’s attention. While the movies from the Twisted Childhood Universe get a limited theatrical release, they are extremely profitable, sometimes extending their releases and also releasing Blu-Rays and getting streaming releases.

Creepy Disney characters need a massive upgrade
Image
Big things are happening for Disney's colorful cast of criminals. With a brand new stage show at Disney's Hollywood Studios and an upcoming expansion at the Magic Kingdom, it's a good time to be a Disney Villains fan.

That said, one detail affects both the villain characters and the rest of Disney's animated entourage. Although villains like Maleficent, Cruella De Vil, and Captain Hook might frighten viewers on screen, how creepy should their Disney Park appearances really be?

Is it time for a magical makeover? Walt Disney World in Orange County | Anadolu/GettyImages

Meeting Disney's cast of characters has been part of the Disney Parks experience for decades. In this writer's opinion, it's practically sacrilegious to go to Disney World and not have your picture made with Mickey. However, some of Disney's meetable character's have a few design flaws.

If you're a longtime Park Hopper, you know that there are...

Disney’s ‘Descendants 5’ Gets a Wonderful Filming Update
Image
It feels just like yesterday when Disney announced that a fifth Descendants movie was in the works, and now, the studio has announced that the movie has taken a major step on our screens. And while it feels like time flew, we didn't travel through time. Production on the movie began in April, and fast-forward to about two months later, filming has now wrapped. The update was announced in a video posted on the official Disney Instagram account.

The video features franchise stars Kylie Cantrall and Malia Baker dressed as themselves in the present day. After a brief introduction, Cantrall picks up the antique pocket watch that serves as a time travel machine in the movie. After both agree to use it, they are transformed into their respective characters, Princess Red and Princess Chloe. Surprised, they ask an unseen person, "What day is it?" and they get the response, "It's the last day of production.

Disney Dreamlight Valley Unveils Treasure Map Hint For Upcoming Peter Pan Update
Image
Disney Dreamlight Valley has just shared the first official teaser for its Summer 2025 update, and it seems like there might be more to this update than originally anticipated. Per the initial 2025 Road Map revealed at the start of the year, fans have pretty much confirmed that the summer update will be centered around Peter Pan. While originally thought to take place around or inside Skull Rock primarily, this new hint might prove otherwise.

Shared via Disney Dreamlight Valley's official Instagram account and other social media platforms, the Summer update teaser comes in the form of an image featuring an old treasure map, where an X marks the spot. The text attached to the image, indicating that "someone dropped this," could mean the addition of more than just Peter Pan himself, as there's another character from this franchise who has been known to use a treasure map or two.

Preview of Disney Villians: Unfairly Ever After Drops Online
Image
Disney has a new stage show coming to Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort called “Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After.”

Now we have a look at the show thanks to The Concrete Wanderer on YouTube.

Villains are caught in mirrors around the stage, with some characters coming out in physical form to perform.

The video focuses on the Magic Mirror’s song, which is catchy, but reminds me of a song from the old Disney Channel holiday specials.

It’s about 15 minutes long.

Some are complaining about the show being screen-heavy, but it’s likely the best way for Disney to get something new out quickly while controlling the costs. Meanwhile, Universal is coming at them with much more advanced shows. But Disney had to do something quickly, and they did.

Disney did cram a lot of villain representation into the show.

Some of the villains seen include,...

Along with the upcoming Villains expansion to the Magic Kingdom, big things are happening for Disney's batch of bad guys. As thrilling and chilling as that sounds, will the new Hollywood Studios stage show at Walt Disney World live up to the hype?

Why A Hercule Poirot Actor Refused To Make The Agatha Christie Character Funny
Image
There is a strange tendency by TV and film writers to transform the works of Agatha Christie into light romps and playful farces. Christie wrote stern, sometimes bleak murder mysteries wherein damaged and bitter people, acting on their darkest impulses, will bitterly take the lives of others. Only uniquely intelligent and observant detectives like Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot are able to see through the hate of human bitterness to get to the truth. Yet when the time would come to adapt Christie's works to the screen, many screenwriters felt that those tales should also be funny. Christie has gone on record with her dislike of adaptations for this very reason. Few, she felt, did her writing justice. Christie passed away in 1976, so she was able to see some of the films that her works inspired, and she was pretty unilaterally miffed at their existence.

Christie, sadly, didn't live long...

‘Arco’ Review: France’s Answer to Studio Ghibli Offers an Emotional Sci-Fi Epic
Image
There’s one particular journey the makers of “Arco,” a soulful animated movie premiering in the Special Screenings section of Cannes 2025, are hoping to follow, whether they say it or not. The journey of “Flow.”

That animated triumph premiered to raves at Cannes in 2024 and slowly built momentum until finally winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar earlier this year. For all Cannes represents to global cinema, it had never been a particularly fecund environment for animation: The festival used to play host to splashy premieres for blockbuster hits such as “Shrek 2” and “Bee Movie,” not eventual Academy Award winners. “Flow” changed all that. What would Cannes do for animation next?

This writer is no Oscar prognosticator, but it seems “Arco” is unlikely to repeat that triumph. Not that it isn’t a worthy film — though not as worthy as the wordlessly universal “Flow,” which, at times, truly feels like...

'Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare' Takes Flight on a New Streamer
Image
Horror fans gather up. Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, the third installment in the Twisted Childhood Universe, is now available on Prime Video. The movie directed by Scott Chambersis one of the better entries in the universe and is equally gory and blood-soaked. For the fans of the sub-genre, who don’t know anything about the feature, this is a slasher but with a twisted fairytale that you should watch at your own risk.

The film swaps the warmth of a classic tale and turns Peter Pan (Martin Portlock) into a child kidnapper. It follows Wendy (Megan Placito) and her younger siblings, who won’t be setting off on the adventure of a lifetime to the wondrous world of Neverland. On the contrary, the Darlings are thrown into a terrifying scenario when the deranged Pan kidnaps Michael. It has a 48 percent Rotten Tomatoes score with an audience score sitting as high as 71 percent,...

'Tron 3' Director Compares Jared Leto's Antagonist to Disney's Pinocchio
Image
Tron: Ares director Joachim Rønning has drawn an interesting comparison between Jared Leto's antagonist in Tron 3 and a beloved Disney icon. Many would perhaps presume that Ares — the rogue A.I. at the center of the story — would be similar to the classic villains featured in Disney's Hall of Infame, such as Jafar, Scar, or even Captain Hook, but that is not the case. Rønning told Empire that the Ares computer program has slightly more complex coding than a traditional baddie, making him more like Pinocchio than anyone else.

"Not to be too clichéd, but I always thought about him a bit like Pinocchio. Ares wants to be a real boy. We talked a lot about him almost being an infant, discovering the world for the first time, and how we wanted the audience to see the world through his eyes. The little things that we take for granted,...

Disney's live-action remakes are inescapable these days, as beloved stories are continuously recycled and modified for new generations. Some of these films made much-needed changes to these stories, most notably ones that involved negative depictions of marginalized communities, but many revisions actually hurt the overall narrative.

There's no sign of these remakes stopping as Disney is moving towards developing films that are relatively recent, such as a live-action Moana. As these mostly uninspired cash grabs are released, fans anxiously anticipate what their favorite Disney classics will become. The endless barrage of remakes may never end, but perhaps this era of Disney would be a little more bearable if the updates made to these stories actually made sense and didn't feel like such a departure from the original animated film.

Disney Villains get a new official video game (it's not what you think)
Image
Maleficent, Ursula, Captain Hook, Scar, and Jafar are just a few of the fearsome faces found in Disney's rogues gallery. For decades, these dreaded foes have entertained and even frightened generations of movie-goers, so putting them in their own video game should get the same result, right?

Disney has made some pretty decent games in the past, so giving a title dedicated to the studio's iconic roster of villains should be a piece of cake with a lot of fanservice. However, today's Nintendo Direct showed something that wasn't exactly what we were expecting.

A virtual villain cafe?

According to Nintendo, Disney Villains Cursed Café is a coffee shop sim that puts a different twist on some of our favorite animated antagonists. As a "potionista," players will serve up all sorts of kooky concoctions to the likes of Ursula, Gaston, and more. While this will undoubtedly vibe with a certain audience,...

Time Travel is Dangerous (2024) Review
Image
As films like The Terminator, The Time Machine, Looper, Edge of Tomorrow, Back to the Future 2 and Hot Tub Time Machine 2 have proven, going backwards and forwards across history or into the far future can be perilous to both personal and universal health. But it has taken until now for a movie to say it out loud, and that movie is the brilliant British comedy Sci-Fi usurpingly titled Time Travel is Dangerous.

The set up is simple enough and starts when two friends Ruth and Megan find a time travel machine by the bins behind their vintage shop in Muswell Hill. The scientific marvel, which is actually a modified dodgem, takes them on jaunts across history where they pilfer anything they can from the bemused locals of the past to sell in their shop. Seemingly onto a great thing the pals are oblivious not only to how the time...

Jason Isaacs Thanks MCU Fans For Dream-Casting Him As An Iconic X-Men Character
Image
When fan-casting Marvel's X-Men, there are some actors who are widely thought of for certain roles. For example, Daniel Radcliffe has long been a top choice to play Logan/James Howlett/Wolverine. However, one enduring actor-character match is Jason Isaacs as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto. Isaacs has a long history of playing complex villainous characters in projects such as The Patriot, the Harry Potter franchise, Peter Pan, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and more. Moreover, the actor shares a Jewish background with Magneto, which is a core element of his story and contributes significantly to his motivations.

Recently, he acknowledged the popular fan cast for the first time. In an episode of Vanity Fair Game Show alongside his The White Lotus costars, Isaacs was tasked with seeing how well they knew him by guessing his answers to questions provided by the producers. Where You've Seen The Cast of John Wick 4

Mr. Wick is again trying to retire in John Wick: Chapter 4. The 2023 John Wick installment has Baba Yaga meeting old friends and making new enemies as the High Table hunts him down for everything he did in the last three movies. The nail-biter sequel to the action franchise is set in various international locations, including Japan and France, where its diverse cast impresses in fight sequences more gruesome than ever.

Some of Keanu Reeves' co-stars in the fourth chapter are seen from the first movie, like Ian McShane and Lance Reddick as the manager and the concierge of the Continental Hotel in New York City. New cast members like Bill Skarsgård and Natalia Tena are fantastic additions, and their characters steal the show in their scenes. Even newcomer Rina Sawayama shines in a minor role, leaving no doubt that the cast of John Wick 4 is outstanding.

Jennifer Morrison says she'd support a Once Upon a Time reboot, but we wouldn't unless this happened
Image
If you ask anyone what my favorite show is, to this day, it's still Once Upon a Time. The premise of the series, especially those first three seasons, was so unique and wonderful. It was a world that allowed you to escape into the fairytale stories where many were changed in inventive ways that surprised us all.

The show went on for seven seasons, from 2011 to 2018 on ABC, though I'd say that for most fans no matter who your favorite character was or what relationship you shipped the hardest, Ouat season 7 was completely unnecessary and honestly erased from most of our minds. I at least ignore the fact that it was a thing.

It's been a few years now since the series finale aired, and that makes us fans nostalgic for the show. That does mean that the actors are already being asked about whether they'd like to see and...

Get ready for a return to Auradon as we’re getting a new Descendants movie!

If there’s one thing Disney Channel knows how to do, it’s franchise a movie hit. It’s been done since High School Musical became a monster success in 2006 and still continues today. When said film is a musical, it can be even bigger.

That was the case with Descendants, the 2015 film that reimagined the classic Disney villains. The plot had the bad guys sent to an island by the heroes. The children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar and Cruella De Vil were sent to an academy as part of a peace process.

At first baddies, the kids soon grew to enjoy being good guys to turn on their families. The film was a success that inspired two sequels and an animated series.

In 2024, the property was revived in Descendants: The Rise of Red.

‘Street Trash’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Sean Cameron Michael, Donna Cormack-Thomson, Suraya Rose Santos, Joe Vaz, Lloyd Martinez Newkirk, Shuraigh Meyer, Gary Green, Ryan Kruger, Warrick Grier | Written by Ryan Kruger, James C. Williamson | Directed by Ryan Kruger

While remakes in general don’t bother me, I have to admit I didn’t think remaking Street Trash was a good idea. The original is the kind of weird, offbeat film it’s almost impossible to sit down and deliberately write, it’s the kind of weirdness that has to come organically, something any number of deliberate attempts at creating cult films have proven.

I did find it encouraging that Ryan Kruger had been picked to direct it. If anyone could pull it off the maker of Fried Barry, a seriously Wtf comedy about a junkie’s encounter with aliens and its aftermath, stood a good chance of being the one to do it. I also...

10 Darkest Disney Animated Movie Fan Theories, Ranked
Image
Fan theories can range from the magnificently layered to the simplistic and dull. As Disney is one of the largest entertainment companies in the world, inspired fans have created hundreds of possible theories stemming from their entire catalog. However, although most of these theories can be bright and cheery, some theories can get really dark and upsetting.

The theories that Disney fans have come up with can surprisingly sound realistic given the evidence. Judging by how many theories fans have created from these classic films, it's hard to ignore the ones that sound the most terrifyingly true.

This 29% Rotten Steven Spielberg Classic Was Supposed to Be the Next Wizard of Oz
Image
Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of entertainment. He's created masterpieces such as Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Schindler's List, Catch Me If You Can, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Saving Private Ryan and many more. His talents are endless, and his relatable and enjoyable tales have spanned generations of audiences, even today. However, not every filmmaker is perfect. A notable contender for Spielberg's most controversial or critically panned film, despite the magnificent storytelling and artistry the movie offers to audiences, is his adaptation of the book Peter Pan and Wendy with Hook.

Hook starred the talented Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, and Julia Roberts in a movie that would see the boy from Neverland all grown up, and long forgetting about the fantastical world. However, he returns after his children are kidnapped by the villainous Captain Hook, leading to a grand adventure of self-discovery and familial love.

10 Best Disney Animated Sequels, Ranked
Image
For a long time, sequels to Disney’s animated movies were created primarily for straight-to-home releases. These movies were often perceived as lower in quality, although many were underrated at the time. While they rarely matched the original in scope and depth, the stronger entries still provided beloved characters with new challenges to grow and learn from.

Thanks to the success of sequels from DreamWorks and Pixar, Disney’s animation studio has become more ambitious with theatrical releases for their sequels. The 15 Best '90s Kids' Movies Ranked
Image
Did movies for kids peak in the 1990s? It's entirely possible. We arrived at this question after sifting through piles of our old VHS tapes to produce a list of the best '90s kids' movies, noting the amount of high-quality entertainment we had to choose from. Make no mistake, this was a hard list to assemble and required more than a few heartbreaking sacrifices. Even cherished Walt Disney productions like "Mulan" and "Tarzan" were left on the outside looking in, which speaks volumes about the last great decade. "Beethoven?" Nope. "Rookie of the Year?" Nadda. "Angels in the Outfield?" Non. The Lindsey Lohan "Parent Trap?" Nein.

Thankfully, the films that made the final cut are genuinely excellent. So, don't get too mad if your favorite children's flicks are nowhere to be found. Chances are, we love them too but had to make room for those that were marginally better.
