Image
Television has evolved a lot over the course of the last 25 years. The success of shows like “The Sopranos,” “The Wire” and “Breaking Bad” throughout the late ’90s, 2000s and early 2010s made many viewers start taking the medium and its possibilities a lot more seriously than they did before. That, combined with the explosion of streaming services in the 2010s, resulted in a boom of expensive, complex, ambitious and sometimes star-studded ongoing and limited series.

That means most streaming platforms are bursting with countless worthwhile prestige dramas for you to watch. Here are seven of the best that you can stream right now on HBO Max.

Michael Mann’s filmography is filled with slick thrillers that feature stunning cityscapes and moody, synth-heavy soundtracks. Be it “The Insider” or “Manhunter,” he has proven his command over the medium with similar aesthetic choices. “Heat,” the 1995 thriller, remains one of his most compelling works. It is even more iconic because of its two leads – Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.

For both of their fans, it is an absolute treat to see them share the scenes. So, their restaurant conversation is one of the most memorable and cherished scenes in cinema history. While both actors are at the top of their game, the film is highly affecting because of its complex moral dilemma.

Why FX Canceled Jeff Bridges' The Old Man
Image
This "Old Man" is retiring early; FX's "The Old Man," a Jeff Bridges-led slow-burning thriller that earned heavy praise in its first season, will not be coming back for a third season. News of the show's cancellation broke in December 2024 via Deadline, leaving fans with a cliffhanger to nowhere after the series' sophomore season ended a few months earlier.

Based on a book by Edgar Award winner Thomas Perry, "The Old Man" followed the mysterious exploits of, well, an old man. The elder statesman in question, played by Bridges, was eventually revealed to be an ex-CIA operative with some unfinished business — and a reluctance to re-enter his bloody former profession. Season 1 of the show was understated yet propulsive, and it benefited from great performances and a tense, looming showdown between Bridges' Dan Chase and Harold Harper (John Lithgow), a leading counterintelligence official who has a history with Chase.

‘One of the things that made it so special was that it wasn’t for everyone’: ‘The Leftovers’ EPs and cast on the show’s legacy
Image
Damon Lindelof is the first to admit that The Leftovers was a bit of a hard sell.

The critically acclaimed show, which ran for three seasons from 2014 to 2017 on HBO, attracted a devoted, passionate but relatively small fan base, who were drawn in by the haunting exploration of grief and its aftermath.

Lindelof reunited with executive producers Tom Perrotta (whose novel inspired the series) and Mimi Leder and cast members Carrie Coon (Nora), Amy Brenneman (Laurie), and Ann Dowd (Patti) at the Atx TV Festival in Austin to "reheat" The Leftovers, sharing their first impressions of each other and the series, the most “terrifying” scene, and the show’s lasting legacy.

Lindelof revealed he was nervous before his first meeting with Perrotta. “It was a job interview in a lot of ways, but you just completely and totally put me at ease, and by the end of the meeting, that...

White House Correspondents’ Weekend: In Trump 2.0, The Parties Continue, But The Dinner Will Be Very Different
Image
Media companies, talent agencies and startups are planning cocktail receptions and parties surrounding this weekend’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, but what will be strikingly different is the main event itself.

There will be no president, with Donald Trump, as he did in his first term, skipping it. There will be no comedian, as the Whca dropped plans to feature a comedian, Amber Ruffin. And the typical Hollywood turnout so far looks to be scant.

Instead, the dinner at the Washington Hilton looks to reflect the moment — which is to say a state of anxiety for journalism in general, with the Trump administration not just bucking tradition but doing its utmost to undermine traditional media.

The Whca’s president, Eugene Daniels, said earlier this month that he was planning a “re-envisioning” of the dinner at what he called a “consequential moment for journalism.” Daniels, formerly of Politico and now with MSNBC,...

HBO has confirmed that The Leftovers is not leaving Max on June 3.

Damon Lindelof's hit drama series The Leftoversis slated to be removed from HBO's Max streaming service.

Per ComicBook.com, The Leftovers is officially going to be removed from Max as of June 3. Originally, the series was supposed to make its exit from the streaming service on April 11, though that date was pushed back by almost two months. Michael Mann Says He’s Handed In His ‘Heat 2’ Script To Warner Bros.
Image
After confirming late last year that he was close to finishing his screenplay for Heat 2, Michael Mann said he has officially turned in a draft to Warner Bros.

In a Q&a with Vulture, the stylistic director behind the Robert De Niro and Al Pacino two-hander said, “I just finished the screenplay and handed in the first draft.”

Naturally, the plot details of the highly anticipated sequel for the 1995 crime thriller will remain under wraps for a while. Mann added of who he passed the script to: “In this case it was Warner Brothers. Any more than that, I can’t talk about. But it’s an exciting project.”

Arguably Mann’s most known and lauded film — among many of his that have developed cult devotion — Heat follows a cat-and-mouse relationship between a criminal mastermind (De Niro) planning one final job and a lieutenant (Pacino) dedicated to his work amid personal troubles,...

Al Pacino & Robert De Niro's 30-Year-Old Crime Masterpiece Is a Remake of a Forgotten Michael Mann Movie
Image
Michael Mann has long been a filmmaker with an eye for detail. From his early work on Miami Vice to his later films like Collateral and The Insider, Mann explored the impact of work on one's identity through action. Nowhere is this more evident than in Heat, a film that was a turning point not only in Mann’s career but in the crime genre as a whole.

However, what some fans don’t realize is that its roots actually trace back to a lesser-known project – Mann’s 1989 TV film LA Takedown. While the TV movie shares the same cat-and-mouse relationship between a cop and a thief, it was limited by the constraints of TV production, resulting in a more stripped-down and less polished version of the story. What LA Takedown lacked in resources, Heat more than made up for in scale, depth, and precision.

The Sylvester Stallone disaster movie, Daylight, gets a new 4K Blu-ray release from Kino Lorber
Image
The 1996 disaster movie, Daylight, will soon be coming to your home in crisp ultra high-definition picture. Blu-ray.com has recently reported that the Sylvester Stallone film from Rob Cohen, who directed Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story and The Fast and the Furious, will be getting a new 4K remastered physical media release from the Kino Lorber distributor. In addition to Stallone, the movie co-starred Amy Brenneman, Viggo Mortensen, Dan Hedaya, and Jay O. Sanders. This new ultra-hd version is expected to hit retailers next year on March 11.

Daylight is not particularly well regarded by Stallone fans, and it had the misfortune of coming out just as disaster movies were bombing left and right. It grossed an abysmal $33 million domestically, which seriously hurt Sly’s career, even though it did well enough overseas that it likely broke even by the time it hit home video. It was meant to be the...

FX Reveals the Fate of Jeff Bridges' The Old Man
Image
Two months after the Season 2 finale, the future of The Old Man on FX has been revealed. Unfortunately, it's not good news for fans of the series.

Per Deadline, FX has officially canceled The Old Man after two seasons, so there will not be a third season of the Jeff Bridges-led series. The show meeting its fate comes after wading through some troubled waters with its production for its two seasons. Season 1 began development in 2019 and was forced to shut down with just three episodes left to film because of the pandemic in 2020. Filming was further postponed as Bridges underwent cancer treatment; he announced in 2021 that his cancer was in remission, and production on The Old Man resumed in 2022.

‘The Old Man’ Canceled After Two Seasons on FX
Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, and Alia Shawkat in The Old Man (2022)
FX has canceled its drama series The Old Man after two seasons.

The series, starring Jeff Bridges as a retired CIA operative pressed back into action, performed well in its first season in 2022 and earned two Emmy nominations, for Bridges’ lead performance and cinematography.

Production on season two stopped during last year’s dual labor strikes, leading to a gap of more than two years between seasons – not unusual for a streaming series but hard to overcome for a show that originates on a linear channel, as The Old Man did on FX. The cancellation comes about eight weeks after season two aired its finale in late October.

FX declined comment.

The second — and now final — season is up for three Critics Choice Awards in January: best drama series, best actor in a drama for Bridges and best supporting actor in a drama for John Lithgow.

Along with Bridges and Lithgow,...

The Old Man Canceled At FX And Disney+ After 2 Seasons
Image
2024 has been a brutal year for streaming series being cancelled, with everything from The Acolyte to Kaos to Dead Boy Detectives feeling the steel of the axe over the past twelve months. It's been so brutal, we wrote a whole piece about it — which you can find here. But while we might've hoped we'd seen the last of the year's cancellations as 2025 rapidly approaches, it simply wasn't to be. Per Deadline's reporting, FX and Disney+'s Jeff Bridges led series The Old Man is the latest victim of the content cull and has been dropped after just two seasons.

Created by Robert Levine and Jonathan E. Steinberg, and based on Thomas Perry’s 2017 bestseller of the same name, the show — which co-starred John Lithgow, Amy Brenneman and Alia Shawkat — followed Dan Chase (Bridges), a former CIA man whose off-grid existence is disrupted when his past life catches up with him.

‘The Old Man’ Canceled After 2 Seasons at FX

“The Old Man” finished his last mission on FX.

The spy thriller series, starring Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, Amy Brenneman and Alia Shawkat, has been canceled at the cable network after two seasons. Though it held its critical acclaim, the show failed to keep the momentum from its celebrated first season following an extended production hiatus credited to the Hollywood strikes.

“The Old Man” premiered in June 2022 on FX and became the network’s most-watched series premiere since January 2021, as well as FX’s most-watched series premiere on Hulu at the time. With a break between seasons of two years and three months, however, the show failed to match those impressive ratings when it returned for Season 2 in September of this year.

The series followed Dan Chase (Bridges), who after decades off the grid has to get back into action after an assassin comes after him. Season 2 revolved around saving...
