The Magnificent Seven, which also stars Vincent D’Onofrio and Lee Byung-Hun (Squid Game), is streaming on Prime Video and Amazon MGM in America, where it’s one of the most popular movies on the platform, sitting at #7 at the time of writing. Chris Pratt & Denzel Washington's 9-Year-Old Remake of 1 of the Greatest Westerns Ever Made Is Climbing the Streaming Charts
Image
Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt have had a series of successful projects each, but their joint Western wasn't a big success. The action-packed Western The Magnificent Seven was a remake of the 65-year-old Western of the same name, and it didn't achieve the same acclaim as the original.

The Magnificent Seven premiered on Sept. 8, 2016, and it came from Washington's frequent collaborator, Antoine Fuqua, with whom he worked on The Equalizer trilogy and 2001's Training Day. Although The Magnificent Seven featured the two big movie stars and had critically acclaimed director attached to the project, the Western didn't impress. However, The Magnificent Seven is finding a new life on streaming, as it's currently rising on the charts on MGM+, per FlixPatrol.

The Magnificent Seven has been fluctuating in the charts on MGM+. The Western has recently risen three positions up to seventh place after spending the last few days in ninth and tenth place,...

A Low-Budget Crime Thriller Turned Charles Bronson Into A Superstar
Image
Charles Bronson could not happen today. Born to Lithuanian immigrants in 1921, Brosnan began working in a Pennsylvania coal mine at the age of 12 to help maintain the family's income after the death of his father. It was a miserable existence. The Great Depression hit his family hard. Meals could be scarce and shelter seemed ever endangered. Despite these hardships, Bronson managed to graduate from high school and ultimately left Appalachia to serve as an aerial gunner in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

After the war, Bronson moved to Hollywood and studied acting. At 5 '8," he was not an overpowering presence, but there was a coiled intensity to his early performances that must've been rooted in the tension of his hard-working childhood. Bronson felt determined, formidable -- and, in many of his early roles, shockingly vulnerable.

Bronson was not a method actor, but he took his craft very seriously.

Sylvester Stallone Almost Remade This Classic '70s Crime Action Movie
Image
"Death Wish" began its life in 1972 as a Brian Garfield novel. The story followed Paul Benjamin, a mild-mannered accountant living in a dangerous neighborhood in pre-Giuliani New York. He has spent his adult life being a civic volunteer and trying to mitigate crime in the city, feeling that society was merely out of whack. Paul does a philosophical 180, however, when criminals break into his apartment, steal his stuff, beat his wife to death, and leave his daughter in a vegetative state. He immediately becomes bitter, angry, and violent, evolving into a pro-police conservative so quickly it actually disturbs his conservative friends. Before long, Paul even takes to the streets with a gun in his pocket and starts committing lethal acts of vigilante justice.

The book ends with a cop catching Paul in the middle of a murder ... and then letting him go free. It's a polemic about humanity's natural tendencies...

The 10 Best Lee Majors Movies And TV Shows, Ranked
Image
A casual poll of younger audiences would likely reveal a lack of awareness as to who exactly Lee Majors is, but mention some of his best-known films and television? Well, most people still wouldn't know him, but they all know how to use Google, so they'll be fine. Majors' peak of popularity was across the 1970s and 1980s, primarily due to two hit shows, but his filmography features more shows and movies worth seeing out, whether he's new to you or you're already a fan.

Majors would never be accused of having a wide acting range, and he'd probably be okay with that assessment. His niche was in playing casual heroes, laid back guys with the skills and reluctant drive to do the right thing, and there's no one better when it comes to saying it all by saying nothing at all -- aside from one well-timed eyebrow arch. Much...

Tubi UK | The 35 best cult and genre films available to watch for free
Image
Now updated for April 2025, here’s our pick of 35 genre films – horror, action, sci-fi and more – you can watch for free on Tubi UK.

Like any streaming service, particularly of the ad-supported variety, there’s a lot of filler on Tubi, the subscription-free platform which made its UK debut last July.

On there you’ll find an array of low-budget documentaries of spurious quality, landfill reality TV and how-did-this-get-made TV movies (Amish Abduction).

Look beyond those films, though, and Tubi is positively stuffed with genre and cult offerings – sci-fi, horror, comedy, martial arts, thrillers and more besides. Finding these can take a bit of hunting around, however, so to save you a bit of time, we’ve done some hunting for you. We’re nice like that.

Here’s our pick of 35 genre and cult films currently available to watch for free on Tubi in the UK. We’ll also...

Jews Fight Back in Trailer for Neo-Western ‘Guns & Moses’ (Exclusive)
Image
Amid a proliferation of antisemitic acts of terror in the United States — last month alone saw two Israeli embassy staffers shot dead in D.C. and 15 Jews burned, some severely, by a man wielding a makeshift flamethrower in Colorado — comes a controversial new thriller.

Guns & Moses presents a scenario where American Jews arm themselves and fight back.

Despite a jokey title, the trailer, debuting exclusively with The Hollywood Reporter, suggests a dead-serious and violent revenge story sure to enrage critics of Israel’s deadly military campaign in Gaza — itself provoked by the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas ambush that killed 1,200 Israeli civilians. Israel’s recent attacks on Iran and the potential of U.S. involvement in the conflict will only serve to heighten the controversy.

“This film is more than a story — it’s a conversation we need to be having,” says Guns & Moses director Salvador Litvak in a statement. “Every...

'The Mechanic' Director Simon West Is Eager to Work With Jason Statham Again
Image
Action icon Jason Statham saw huge success last year with the wild action thriller The Beekeeper, with a sequel now officially on the way. With his return as the world’s best assassin-turned-beekeeper-turned-assassin again, there are plenty of previous franchises led by The Stath that could come back for more, with one of the actor and martial artist’s former directors eager to work with the action superstar again.

Speaking with MovieWeb’s own George Edelman, director Simon West, who helmed the Statham vehicles The Expendables 2, Wild Card, and The Mechanic, says he’d love to reunite with The Stath and is “sure” they will do something again in the future. So, could The Mechanic 3 finally be on the cards?

“Yeah, yeah. I mean, I've done three movies with Jason, and we always enjoy working with each other. And I think, you know, we're both proud of the films we did together.

‘Punisher: War Zone’ – Frank Castle Is Jason Voorhees in This Ultraviolent Marvel Gorefest
Image
Some ideas are just so good that they transcend the limitations of the medium where they first appeared. The Punisher is a great example of this, as despite originally being introduced as a Spider-Man villain back in 1974, this extremely versatile character has cemented himself as a cultural icon even among folks who have never read a single comic-book.

That’s why it makes sense that every single Punisher movie is entertaining in its own unique way, as the character remains compelling whether the adaptation embraces comic-book excess or focuses on the hard-boiled vigilante elements of this gun-toting anti-hero. However, while the Thomas Jane incarnation of Frank Castle will always be my nostalgic favorite, the most balanced depiction of the character also happens to be the most underrated, and that’s what we’ll be discussing today. If you haven’t already guessed, I’m referring to Lexi Alexander’s hyper-violent 2008 thriller Punisher: War Zone,...

The 96% Rated Movie Clint Eastwood Rejected After His Major Frustration With Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy
Image
Clint Eastwood made his last two Westerns almost three decades apart, but before that, he was synonymous with the genre. Getting his breakthrough with the TV show Rawhide, he became a global star when he starred in Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Western Dollars trilogy. He made the Man with No Name character famous and became a huge star.

However, Eastwood left the Italian film industry and came back to Hollywood right when Sergio Leone was gearing up for his next masterpiece. The actor was reportedly offered a role in Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West, but the Gran Torino star rejected it, as he was already done with the director’s style.

Director of 2025's Action-Packed Samurai/Western 'Tornado' Reveals the Major Genre Influences on His Film
Image
The crossover between the samurai and the western genres is one of the biggest and most important intersections in cinema history. Every movie buff knows that westerns influenced samurai movies, which inspired westerns, which influenced the samurai genre to evolve, with the back-and-forth repeating for several more cycles. Tornado, a new action thriller directed by John Maclean, is a love letter to both genres as it blends the tropes, conventions, and iconography of samurai and western movies to create a truly unique amalgamation. As you'd then expect, Maclean was inspired by some true classics, as well as some lesser-known gems of both genres.

John Maclean sat down with MovieWeb's George Edelman to discuss his new feature, Tornado. The film held its world premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival in February of this year, and is set for a wider theatrical release on June 13. Tornado is far from Maclean's first western — 2015's Slow West,...

"Our Opinion Was Not Really Noted": John Wick Director Chad Stahelski Slams The Continental Spin-Off
Image
Filmmaker Chad Stahelski helmed the four John Wick movies, all of which have been huge critical and commercial successes. The first big screen spin-off, Ballerina, is now playing in theaters, and the movie (which includes a cameo appearance from Keanu Reeves' assassin) is off to a strong start.

In contrast, The Continental: From the World of John Wick TV series on Peacock drew mixed reviews and came and went without leaving much of a lasting impact. It boasted a solid cast, including Mel Gibson and Colin Woodell, but Winston Scott's early years lacked that John Wick magic.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via ActioNewz.com), Stahelski confirmed that neither he nor Reeves were closely involved with the show...and that he wasn't a fan of what The Continental tried to be.

"Keanu and I were — I wouldn’t say sidelined, but our opinion was heard and not really noted.

"It's an Ode to Kung-Fu Movies": 'John Wick' Director Chad Stahelski Reveals If Keanu Reeves Will Join Donnie Yen's 'Caine' Spin-Off
Image
The John Wick universe continues to expand — and this time, it’s Donnie Yen’s turn in the spotlight. Lionsgate recently confirmed that Yen will not only reprise his role as the blind assassin Caine from John Wick: Chapter 4but also direct the upcoming spin-off, set to begin filming in Hong Kong later this year. According to director Chad Stahelski, the project is a full-blown tribute to the kung-fu genre and marks a major tonal shift from the Wick entries we’ve seen so far — what does that mean? Well, for one, it might mean there's no Wick in a Wick spin-off.

“The Donnie Yen spinoff doesn’t have the John Wick character. It’s got Donnie Yen and it’s an ode to kung fu movies. If John Wick 1 was about Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin, this is about Chow Yun-fat, John Woo and Wong Kar-wai. So I think...

'John Wick' Spin-Off, 'Caine,' Gets Unfortunate Update From Director Chad Stahelski
Image
As well as Ballerina, which releases in theaters today (June 6), Lionsgate previously confirmed that another John Wick spin-off was in development. Following the release of Chapter 4 in 2023, fans fell in love with Donnie Yen's blind assassin, Caine, who had a long history with Keanu Reeves' John Wick. The fan reception around Caine was so strong that Lionsgate and Chad Stahelski announced that a spin-off movie starring the character is in development. Progress on the film appears to be going strong, but Stahelski has given a major update about Caine that will surely leave fans disappointed.

During Chad Stahelski's conversation with The Hollywood Reporter to promote From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, the director gave a much-needed update on the upcoming Caine spin-off film. Donnie Yen is already confirmed to star in the film (it wouldn't be much of a movie without him). But, with Reeves making a cameo in Ballerina,...

John Wick Director Confirms Whether Keanu Reeves Returns In Donnie Yen's Caine Spinoff
Image
The John Wick writer-director Chad Stahelski reveals whether Keanu Reeves' assassin will be in Donny Yen's Caine spinoff. Introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4, Caine is a highly skilled assassin who was forced by Vincent Bisset de Gramont to kill his old friend John Wick. In the post-credits scenes, Caine was attacked by Koji Shimazu's daughter, Akira Shimazu, on his way to meet his daughter. The project was confirmed to be in development in the summer of 2024 and is expected to go into production later this year.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski opened up about whether the Baba Yaga will make an appearance. The franchise's creator confirmed that John Wick will not be in the Caine spinoff. He further explained that with the project being "an ode to kung fu movies," focusing on Yen's character and his world would allow them to stay true to the sub-genre.

Jeon Jong-seo in Ballerina (2023)
John Wick director was initially against Keanu Reeves appearing in Ballerina
Jeon Jong-seo in Ballerina (2023)
Keanu Reeves’ appearance in Ballerina may not be a secret, but it was something John Wick director Chad Stahelski was initially opposed to.

“[Wick’s appearance] wasn’t in the original script,” Stahelski told THR. “To be honest, I was kind of against it. But I do see the benefit and we wanted to help out [director Len Wiseman]. We had just opened John Wick 4 and it was huge. He couldn’t go back to the model of the first John Wick and do a little $18 million indie thing and try to build it up. In order to stay in the same game, you got to give him a fighting chance. And the easiest way to transfer that over — at least, from the studio point of view — was have Wick in Ballerina in a special timeline.“

It sounds like Stahelski would have preferred if Ballerina stood alone, but understood that an appearance from...

John Wick Boss Reveals if Keanu Reeves Will Appear in the Next Spinoff After Ballerina
Image
Two years after his presumed death in John Wick: Chapter 4, Keanu Reeves' title assassin is back in the franchise's first spinoff Ballerina. With another spinoff about to begin filming, franchise boss Chad Stahelski has revealed whether fans can expect an appearance from John Wick in that as well.

In an extensive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski touched on the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4 spinoff Caine, which will be centered around Donnie Yen's assassin Caine. When asked if Reeves would appear in the spinoff, Stahelski shared, "The Donnie Yen spinoff doesn’t have the John Wick character. It’s got Donnie Yen and it’s an ode to kung fu movies. Jeon Jong-seo in Ballerina (2023)
Chad Stahelski says Donnie Yen’s John Wick spin-off will be an ode to kung fu movies
Jeon Jong-seo in Ballerina (2023)
Ballerina is finally hitting screens this weekend and our Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, was happy to report that despite a delay for lengthy reshoots, the film is still a lot of fun. He says in his review, “Ballerina is one of the more satisfying franchise spin-offs in recent memory. In this era of IP, every studio is desperate to max out the potential sequels and spinoffs their key franchises can handle, and Lionsgate has a whole slew planned around the John Wick franchise. Yet, what makes Ballerina different is that this doesn’t feel like much of a derivative of the franchise.”

Ballerina joins The Continental in attempting to expand the John Wick universe and Lionsgate had also announced that Donnie Yen would be reprising his role from Chapter 4 as Caine in a solo outing. While Reeves was brought in to merge Ballerina with Wick‘s world, franchise director Chad Stahelski...

‘John Wick’ Boss Chad Stahelski Gets Candid About Franchise: “My Process Is F***ed”
Image
John Wick creator Chad Stahelski is attempting one of the trickiest pivots in Hollywood: Turn a series of hit movies with a dead hero into a broader franchise. His four John Wick films starring Keanu Reeves as a stoic ronin gunslinger have been a rousing success for studio Lionsgate. But his last effort, 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4, killed off its world-weary protagonist in a finale that felt perfectly fitting. After the film grossed nearly half a billion dollars, Lionsgate and Stahelski suddenly had a high-class problem: John Wick the franchise clearly has a lot more life left in it, while the John Wick character was seemingly six feet under.

What to do? Lionsgate attempted (without Stahelski and Reeves) a Peacock spinoff TV limited series titled The Continental, which fell flat (Stahelski has thoughts about this). This week sees the release of the franchise’s first spinoff movie, Ballerina, which...

Jason Statham's 14-Year-Old Hidden Masterpiece Action Movie Is Now on Peacock
Image
Peacock subscribers who are fans of Jason Statham are in luck. The actor's 2011 action hit The Mechanic is now streaming on the platform.

Released in 2011, the action thriller stars Statham as Arthur Bishop, a professional assassin or 'mechanic,' who specializes in making his hits look like accidents, suicides, and petty criminals' acts. The movie, a remake of the Charles Bronson-led film of the same name from 1972, was a modest box office hit, grossing over $76 million worldwide, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, although Statham's performance and the action sequences were praised.

A sequel, titled The Mechanic: Resurrection, followed in 2016. The follow-up, which was a streaming hit on Max earlier this year, saw Statham return to the role of Bishop, who had foolishly thought he had been able to put his murderous past behind him. However, when his most formidable foe kidnaps the love of his life, he is...

45 Years Later, I’m Glad Stanley Kubrick Didn’t Listen to the Worst Advice for ‘The Shining’ Involving Jack Nicholson
Image
When Stanley Kubrick chose Jack Nicholson for The Shining, he wasn’t just casting an actor- he was making a statement. At the time, Nicholson was basking in the glory of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’s success, and many believed his wide-eyed intensity was too in-your-face to play a man spiraling into madness.

One such person was Kubrick’s assistant Emilio D’Alessandro. He wasn’t a fan of the casting initially and even suggested a different actor as a subtle alternative. Thankfully, though, Kubrick did not flinch. Today, some 45 years later, Nicholson’s portrayal stands as one of the most iconic in horror history, and we have Kubrick’s casting instincts to thank for that. Had he listened to that bad advice, The Shining might never have been the classic and industry benchmark it is.

Stanley Kubrick did not play safe while casting Jack Nicholson for The Shining...

I was discouraged from pursuing my dreams, says Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold Schwarzenegger was "discouraged" from pursuing success in Hollywood. The 77-year-old actor turned his focus towards the American movie business after he retired from bodybuilding in the 1970s - but Schwarzenegger was warned at the time that his ambitions were unrealistic.Speaking to his son Patrick Schwarzenegger, for Variety's Actors on Actors series, he explained: "When I came to America, Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson were the highest-paid actors, with a million dollars a movie. I said, 'I’ve got to be part of that.' Eventually I made $30 million a movie, and I caught up with those guys. "Even though everyone says, 'Arnold, it’s never going to happen. Your name — Schnitzel or whatever it is — no one will remember, and you’re too big now.' "In the ’70s, it’s Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino, Woody Allen — those are the big stars of the day. The Classic War Movie That Spawned Several Mediocre Sequels
Image
Robert Aldrich's 1967 film "The Dirty Dozen" is often cited as one of the most masculine movies ever made. Set in 1944, it follows the travails of Major John Reisman (Lee Marvin) as he is assigned to lead a 12-man platoon of ex-convicts and ultra-violent Army near-dropouts. Reisman is tasked with training up some of the worst and most horrible people in the Army, get them up to snuff, and lead them on a secret mission into a Nazi stronghold in France. The soldiers are all awful in one way or another, so their mission to kill Nazi higher-ups offers them something violently heroic to do with their tempers. The Dirty Dozen included notable actors like Charles Bronson, John Cassavetes, Telly Savalas, Jim Brown, and Donald Sutherland. Ernest Borgnine played a fellow general.

"The Dirty Dozen" was a huge success, earning over $45 million at the box office on a $5.3 million budget.

John Wayne's Final Movie Was A Perfect Send-Off For His Legendary Western Run
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

When principal photography commenced on "Rooster Cogburn" in the fall of 1974, John Wayne was 68 years old and not thinking about retirement. By the end of the shoot, the star was on oxygen after contracting viral pneumonia. Almost a year later, when it came time to promote the film's theatrical release, Wayne was Mia due to the same lingering case of pneumonia -- a frightening proposition given that the longtime smoker had lost a lung to cancer a decade prior.

If Wayne wasn't well enough to do a perfunctory round of interviews, he certainly wasn't in good enough shape to shoot another movie. But the star was determined to get back in the saddle and justified his eagerness by pointing out that he was still cancer-free. Even with one lung, a persistent cough wasn't going to take down the Duke. According...

Clint Eastwood Owes His Career to Sergio Leone, but There’s a Western by the Director He Rejected: ‘He wanted to go more into spectacle’

Havoc was released on Netflix on April 25, with Hardy starring as Patrick Walker, a jaded cop on a mission to save a politician's son in the high-octane thriller. During Guzmán's time on set with Hardy, he revealed to Screen Rant how he believes the Venom actor can succeed at anything he puts his mind to. "Tom Hardy can do anything he wants to. That’s how good he is," Guzmán gushed.

He went on to cite Bronson, Hardy's 20008 biographical drama, as proof of the actor's ability to nail any role. "Have you ever seen the movie Bronson? Check that movie out that he did. You want to see something intense? See that … and when you see that movie,...

Wtf Happened to Jason Statham?
Image
When you think of Jason Statham, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? If it’s a fit bald dude beating the shit out of a nameless goon, good. That means we’re on the same page. Range is not Jason Statham’s forte, nor would we expect his characters to be able to spell “forte”. But the man has marked himself as maybe The action star in modern movies. And that’s good enough for us and his millions of fans. As Frank Martin said in The Transporter: Never change the deal.

Jason Statham was born on July 26th, 1967 in Shirebrook, England. A natural and gifted athlete, Statham was competing in everything from football to diving (he would later be inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame). Then came modelling because, well, look at that jawline!

But it was the screen he was destined for.

‘The Amateur’ Review: Rami Malek Is a CIA Analyst Turned Avenger in a Thriller More By-the-Code Than It Looks
Image
Charlie Heller (Rami Malek), the mad-as-hell secret-agent geek brainiac at the center of “The Amateur,” is a CIA analyst who works five floors underground at Langley, in the Decryption and Analysis department. There, he’s a master of all things coded and virtual, a surveillance hacker par excellence. Out of the office, he and his adoring business-person wife, Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan), reside in a renovated farmhouse and appear to have the perfect life. So when Sarah, on a corporate trip to London, gets taken hostage by a cadre of terrorists and is killed on the spot, it’s as if Charlie’s entire existence had been wiped away. Since the tragedy was an international incident, his bosses at the Agency assure him that the perpetrators will be hunted down. But that’s not enough for Charlie. It won’t sate his rage, his desire for vengeance. Instead, Charlie says, “I want to kill them himself.

Tom Hardy’s Best Performances, Ranked
Image
Tom Hardy is, no surprise, terrific as mob fixer Harry da Souza in Guy Ritchie’s series “MobLand,” which debuted on Paramount+ on Sunday night. As with his previous criminal characters, he brings the necessary ruthlessness and brute power to the role.

While we wait for more episodes to roll out, why not revisit some of his best performances working with some of the best directors in the business, including Christopher Nolan, Nicolas Winding Refn and Alejandro González Iñárritu.

From an alien-possessed reporter to a gleefully garish supervillain, we love him at all decibel levels.

In this stacked cast, Hardy plays a lower-level operative who’s stumbled onto a dangerous secret, one that’s already gotten a number of people killed. It’s rare to see the actor...

Charles Bronson Played Two Very Different Roles On Gunsmoke
Image
Not every actor can be one of the greats, but they make a memorable impression based on how filmmakers play to their strengths. Charles Bronson is one of those actors. He didn't exactly break the mold as an expressive actor, but there's a flexibility in his stoicism that could present a two-way mirror depending on the kind of character he was playing. Legends like Sergio Leone ("Once Upon a Time in the West") and John Sturges ("The Great Escape") knew as much.

If there's one film that defines the definitive Bronson look and feel, it's Michael Winnerman's revenge fantasy "Death Wish." Paul Kersey is an architect turned nighttime vigilante who vows to clean up the streets after his wife is murdered and his daughter is sexually assaulted during a home invasion. Not much changes when it comes to Bronson's performance across the increasingly ridiculous five film series, as the character's quiet bloodthirst remains fairly consistent.

Denzel Washington's Only Western Is Finding New Fans On Prime Video
Image
At this point in their careers, Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua simply trust each other and it's not hard to see why. The pair's first collaboration, 2001's "Training Day" resulted in an Oscar win for Denzel, which considering this was the first movie in which the esteemed star played a villain, is a pretty good outcome — even more so when you consider Denzel's "Training Day" casting sparked so much controversy that he was warned against taking the role by the NAACP.

In the years that followed, Washington and Fuqua worked together multiple times, most notably on the "Equalizer" films which saw Washington going full John Wick-mode in a trilogy of action thrillers based on the 1985 CBS series. But "The Equalizer" and its sequels aren't the only Fuqua/Washington team-ups to come in the wake of "Training Day." In 2016, the director oversaw yet another Denzel Washington first with "The Magnificent Seven,...

Jason Statham Is the Last of the Strong, Silent Types
Image
Action megastar Jason Statham still looks powerful for a man inching toward 60. And the older he gets, the more worn and lived-in his face becomes, like my therapist’s leather couch. So what if he doesn’t take off his shirt as much anymore? He’s built like a wrestler, but graceful, too, an experienced kickboxer with a trademark, face-smashing spinning back-kick. In A Working Man, the U.K.-born Statham stars as an all-American man’s man with a Cockney accent (he was a Royal Marine long ago, you...

Movie Poster of the Week | The Action-Packed Posters of Mort Künstler
Image
Above: US one-sheet for Breakheart Pass. Art by Mort Künstler. The first movie poster painted by Mort Künstler that caught my eye, long before I knew his name, was this vertiginous heart-stopper for a lesser-known Charles Bronson western, Breakheart Pass (1975). Los Angeles Times critic Kevin Thomas called the film, which was a box-office disappointment against Bronson’s million-dollar salary, “a fun if familiar picture ... played so broadly on such an elementary level that it can hope to satisfy only the most undemanding of viewer,” making it sound like the sleepiest of adventure films. But you wouldn’t know that from Künstler’s poster, in which Bronson thrillingly clings onto the edge of a moving train high above a snowy mountain ravine as a booted foot is about to stomp on his bare knuckles. A cliffhanger if ever there was one.Künstler, who died last month at the age of 97, was...

A Working Man Review: Ayer, Statham and Stallone crank out a rock-solid action flick
Image
Plot: Levon Cade (Jason Statham) is an ex-commando who now works as the foreman of a construction site in Chicago. When human traffickers abduct the teen daughter of his employer (Michael Pena), Levon snaps back into commando mode only to discover her abductors are deeply embedded with a secret faction of the Russian mob. Naturally, all hell breaks loose.

Review: Jason Statham and David Ayer have a nice thing going. The Beekeeper revitalized their careers to a certain extent, with Ayer putting a superb polish on what could have been a run-of-the-mill action flick, turning into perhaps Statham’s best solo action vehicle. And now, they’re back at it again with the Sylvester Stallone-penned A Working Man, which is based on the novel “Levon’s Trade” by Chuck Dixon (a way better title than the Seagal-like A Working Man).

Like The Beekeeper, it allows Statham to play expertly to type.

‘A Working Man’ Review: Jason Statham Battles Russian Mob In Familiar Violent Action Vehicle
Image
With a Jason Statham-starring movie you know upfront what to expect. A Working Man is no different. In fact, I don’t know why they bother to give these movies titles. Just call it Jason Statham and put a number after that for all the inevitable sequels.

A Working Man seems set up to start a franchise for Statham in which he plays Levon Cade, a former Royal Guard soldier now working as a blue collar Chicago construction worker who is trying to be a good family man grieving the loss of his wife and attempting to get custody of their daughter, Merry (Isla Gie) whose grandfather is attempting to take away from Levon. This film is based on the book Levon’s Trade by Chuck Dixon who has 12 books in all, fashioned after the character. Director David Ayer teams again with Statham after last year’s successful violent actioner,...

The first reactions to Jason Statham and David Ayer’s A Working Man say it’s pure ’80s-style action with an absurd body count
Image
If action movies from the ’80s get your blood pumping, you’ll want to pay attention to the hype behind David Ayer and Jason Stathams latest cinematic beat-down, A Working Man. The first reactions to the duo’s latest display of one-man-army madness are making the rounds on social media. From the look of things, we’ve got many reasons to get excited about Statham’s latest showcase of badassery and body-sending one-liners.

According to JoBlo’s Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, A Working Man is a “campy B-movie blast” that starts off low-key but quickly ramps up with demented madness.

A Working Man is a campy B-movie blast. Statham kills hundreds. Stallone’s script is eighties-style madness (a compliment) and Ayer’s direction is on point. Similar to Beekeeper in that it starts low key and gets more demented (gloriously so) as it goes on.

'A Working Man' First Reactions Heap Praise on Jason Statham’s Gloriously No-Nonsense Action Thriller
Image
Following the monumental success of last year’s The Beekeeper, action movie icon Jason Statham returns to the big screen this week with the equally brilliant-looking A Working Man. Well, we say “equally brilliant,” but based on the first reactions, the reunion of Statham and The Beekeeper’s David Ayer is sounding even better.

Beginning with X/Twitter user and critic @NextBestPicture, A Working Man finds Statham at his absolute best, with the "no-nonsense blockbuster” delivering nothing less than “relentless entertainment, packed with hard-hitting set pieces and a Statham performance that’s as fierce as it is grounded.”

“A Working Man is easily my favorite Jason Statham-led action film in quite some time. Leaps and bounds better than his last collaboration with David Ayer. While it may run a bit long, this blue-collar, no-nonsense blockbuster delivers relentless entertainment, packed with hard-hitting set pieces and a Statham performance that’s as fierce as it is grounded.

Liam Neeson Never Made Taken 4 For A Lot Of Good Reasons
Image
Pierre Morel's "Taken" is far from an action classic, but the hook of sex traffickers inadvertently kidnapping the daughter of a ludicrously lethal CIA agent worked well enough to make the film a decent afternoon time-waster, particularly with an actor of Liam Neeson's caliber cast as the pissed-off papa bear. Moviegoers turned out in big numbers and got precisely what they paid to see (judging from the film's A- Cinemascore), so 20th Century Fox ordered up a sequel figuring undemanding action junkies wouldn't mind if Neeson's daughter got kidnapped again. They figured correctly (though this time his ex-wife was kidnapped), and scored an even bigger success. So they went back to the well a third time, and made roughly the same amount of dough without breaking the bank with the budget.

There was no "Taken 4" (if you don't count the one featuring Jimmy Kimmel), which flies in the...

12 Best Jason Statham Movies, Ranked
Image
Ranking any performer's filmography comes with the need for at least some clarification, and that's especially true when it comes to action stars. Are they being ranked on the performance, the amazing action they deliver, or on the quality of the film as a whole? Are all films eligible or just the ones where the performer has a lead role? Does more action automatically land a film higher on the list? Does the person doing the ranking have impeccable taste when it comes to action cinema?

Below you'll find a ranking of Jason Statham movies, and here are the answers to those questions above. The films are ranked on their overall value as action films. We're focusing on Statham's lead roles -- otherwise "Spy" would dominate the top spot (and "The Way of the Dragon" would have made our ranked list of the best Chuck Norris films) -- whether as...

58 Years Ago, Charles Bronson Starred in One of the Greatest WWII Films Ever
Image
When audiences think of war films, there are certain expectations that come with the genre. Notably, epic battles, heroic soldiers and intense drama. Films like Saving Private Ryan and The Longest Day fit that mold perfectly. They’re about sacrifice, friendship and the bleak realities of war. But The Dirty Dozen took a completely different approach.

Released in 1967, The Dirty Dozen didn’t follow the usual path of praised soldiers and noble bravery. Instead, it focused on twelve convicts sent on a suicide mission. A group of outcasts thrown together for one last chance at redemption. The film mixed dark humor with war action, challenging the clichés that defined other World War II films. By doing so, The Dirty Dozen became an iconic entry in the genre, standing out from the pack of more conventional war films.

Critic’s Appreciation: Gene Hackman, a Tough Guy With Infinite Nuance and Boundless Range
Image
There’s an indelible scene in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 masterwork, The Conversation, in which Gene Hackman’s reclusive surveillance expert, Harry Caul, visits his mistress Amy, played with aching vulnerability by Teri Garr. It’s the night of his birthday, and he arrives so late she’s almost given up on him.

She asks how old he is and then proceeds in a teasing, half-jokey way to pepper him with questions — where he lives, if he lives alone, what he does — that reveal how little she knows of this man she clearly loves and has been seeing for an unspecified length of time.

We feel Amy’s hunger to know him, just as we feel Harry’s wincing discomfort and paranoia as she gently pries information from him. “I don’t feel like answering any more questions,” he mutters, moving toward the apartment door and opening his wallet to...
