Alan Tudyk Says I, Robot Press Sidelined Him After He “Tested Higher Than Will Smith”
Alan Tudyk
Alan Tudyk says he was quietly sidelined from the publicity campaign for 2004’s I, Robot after early audience research showed his performance as the robot Sonny “testing higher than Will Smith,” the film’s human lead. In a recent podcast appearance, Tudyk recalled hearing, “Alan, you are testing higher than Will Smith,” before being told there would be no press push for him and that his name would not be emphasized in marketing. He added that he was “very upset” at the time.

Tudyk played Sonny via on-set performance capture and voice work, a notable use of then-emerging techniques that placed an actor at the center of a fully CG character. Visual-effects notes from the production describe Sonny as a digital creation driven by Tudyk’s captured performance. The actor’s claim has circulated widely since the podcast episode posted, reviving discussion about how studios shape campaigns around marquee names...

Who Played the Robot in Will Smith’s ‘I, Robot’ and Why Was He Removed From Press Conference?
Image
Alan Tudyk wasn’t just behind the metallic face of Sonny in I, Robot; he was the heart, voice, and body of the character that nearly outshone Will Smith. And for that exact reason, according to Tudyk, he was erased from the film’s publicity like he never existed. In a recent candid appearance on the Toon’d In with Jim Cummings podcast, the Resident Alien star revealed that he was unceremoniously dropped from all marketing efforts after test audiences shockingly rated his performance higher than Smith’s.

A lot of people did not know I did Sonny the Robot in ‘I, Robot,’ and there is a reason. They were doing test audiences for the movie, and they score the characters in this kind of test screening. I got word back: ‘Alan, you are testing higher than Will Smith.’ And then I was gone. I was done. There was no publicity,...

Image
Alan Tudyk is explaining why many fans of I, Robot still have no idea he starred in the movie.

The 54-year-old actor appeared on the Toon’d In with Jim Cummings podcast and claimed he was dropped from the marketing campaign for the 2004 sci-fi film after test screenings showed that his character was scoring higher with audiences than the film’s lead, Will Smith.

“A lot of people did not know I did Sonny the Robot in I, Robot, and there is a reason,” Alan said.

Alan Tudyk Says He Was Removed From ‘I, Robot’s Press Materials After Testing Higher Than Will Smith In Early Screenings: “I Was Very Upset”
Image
Alan Tudyk reflected on his career and revealed that there’s a reason why not many people know he played Sonny in the 2004 sci-fi action film I, Robot.

During an appearance on Toon’d In with Jim Cummings, Tudyk said that with test screening audiences, he tested higher than the film’s star Will Smith.

“They were doing test audiences with the movie and they score the characters and I got word back, ‘Alan, you’re testing higher than Will Smith,'” Tudyk recalled on the podcast from June 15. “And then I was gone. I was gone. There was no publicity and my name was not mentioned.”

He continued, “I was so shocked, I was like, ‘But wait, nobody’s going to know that I [play the robot].'”

Tudyk voiced Sonny the robot and was motion-captured for the CGI character, saying that he “put a lot into” his performance, adding, “At the time,...

Alan Tudyk Says He Got Dropped From ‘I, Robot’ Publicity After Testing Higher Than Will Smith With Test Screening Audiences: ‘I Was Very Upset’
Image
Alan Tudyk recently appeared on the “Toon’d In with Jim Cummings” podcast and claimed he was dropped from the marketing of 2004’s “I, Robot” after it was discovered in test screenings that he was actually testing higher with audiences than leading man Will Smith. Tudyk appeared in the film as the robot Sonny via motion capture and voice acting. Axing him from the movie’s publicity meant there were (and still are) people who have no idea he starred in the movie, the actor said.

“A lot of people did not know I did Sonny the Robot in ‘I, Robot,’ and there is a reason,” Tudyk said. “They were doing test audiences for the movie, and they score the characters in this kind of test screening. How to watch the Spider-Man movies in order (including the Avengers films)
Image
He does whatever a Spider can and he does it extremely well. The webslinger known as Spider-Man has been a staple of Marvel Comics since 1960, thrilling readers all over the world with his exceptional talents, outlandish adventures, and genuinely lovable personality. Peter Parker is a legend among legends and that enduring appeal has seen him transcend his genre to become one of the most prominent movie characters of all time, too.

There have been many Spider-Man movies through the years, with multiple actors to play the wall-crawler to go along with them. For years, he existed as a cinematic titan all on his own, with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield portraying him in their respective movie series; now, Tom Holland has taken over the role for the past decade, bringing the character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to cross him over with The Avengers.

With a new MCU trilogy kicking...

In A Year As Hopeless As 2025, Star Trek Is The Best Pop Culture Medicine
Image
It is 2025, and it feels like the bad guys are winning. Humanity is witnessing, just outside our windows, a steady and inexorable march toward fascism. The worst examples of humanity are actively and shamelessly re-writing the rules to their own selfish, money-grubbing, cruelty-inspired whims, and there seems to be little we can do to stop it. Corrupt billionaires are stripping the United States government for parts, all in the name of giving themselves more tax cuts.

Additionally, our rights are being stripped away swiftly and steady. Vulnerable groups are being pointedly ignored and actively placed back at risk. This is all being done because it's too much work for stone-hearted politicians and their sadism-fueled followers to learn what "compassion" means. There are undercurrents of eugenics and white supremacy flowing from the most powerful people on the planet. It's 2025, and we're in a dark, dark place.

Of course, we have the...

Citizen Kane Fans Have To Watch This Overlooked HBO Movie
Image
Given its monumental status as one of the greatest films ever made, it is perhaps surprising that there aren't more movies about the circumstances surrounding the making of "Citizen Kane." After all, beyond the technical dazzle of Orson Welles' magnum opus, it is also the story of a clash between two towering egos at opposite ends of their careers: In one corner Welles, the prodigiously talented upstart from New York who was handed the keys to Hollywood for his first motion picture; in the other, William Randolph Hearst, the fearsome magnate who dominated the largest and most influential media empire in the United States. It is also the tale of two sprawling estates that became monuments to their builders; Hearst Castle, an opulent testament to Heart's immense wealth, and Xanadu, Welles' gloomy fictionalized version of the former that would loom large over the rest of his career. Yet, to date,...

Jurassic World Rebirth Ignores One Game-Changing Moment From Fallen Kingdom
Image
The "Jurassic" franchise simply cannot catch a break. Ever since Steven Spielberg made one of the most perfect movies of all time with "Jurassic Park" in 1993, the franchise has never managed to achieve anything but increasingly diminishing returns. Sure, the first two sequels at least presented cool ideas and incredible set pieces that are still fondly remembered today — The raptors in the tall grass? The Pteranodon jump scare? — but the "Jurassic World" movies have just been a series of cool ideas immediately tossed aside and ignored.

"Jurassic World Dominion" was obviously the movie most guilty of this, as it somehow ignored the idea of dinosaurs roaming the Earth freely and instead dedicated its plot to a nonsensical story involving prehistoric bugs. Now, "Jurassic World Rebirth" tries to course correct by going back to basics and just pitting humans against dinosaurs on a tropical island. The plot involves a group of...

‘Revenge of the Nerds’ Star Robert Carradine Keeps Insisting He’s Not A Nerd
Image
Robert Carradine claims he should have been nominated for his role as Lewis Skolnik, the leader of the Lambda Lambda Lambdas in 1984’s Revenge of the Nerds. The reason Carradine believes his acting was Oscar-worthy? Because a nerd “couldn’t have been farther from who I was.”

Carradine’s boast on the inaugural episode of his Revenge of the Party Nerds podcast is just the latest in his history of pronouncements that instead of being a nerd, he was the kind of guy who kicked nerds’ asses. “I’m not a fucking nerd! I hate nerds!” Carradine told Curtis “Booger” Armstrong in his 2017 memoir, Revenge of the Nerd. “I was Bobby Carradine. One of the Princes of Hollywood, as far as I was concerned.”

In GQ’s oral history of Revenge of the Nerds, director Jeff Kanew remembered Carradine telling him, "Look, I don’t know what I’m doing...

23 Years Later, This Explosive Tom Clancy Thriller Is Blowing Up the Streaming Charts
Image
As geopolitical tensions rise across the globe, Netflix viewers are turning to a Tom Clancy political thriller. The Sum of All Fears, the 2002 adaptation of Clancy's 1991 novel about a terrorist attack on American soil, has risen to #10 on the Netflix streaming charts. The film features Ben Affleck as the third big-screen portrayer of Clancy's analyst-turned-action man, Jack Ryan. Ryan had already been featured in three films: in the first, The Hunt for Red October, he was played by Alec Baldwin, while in the subsequent two films, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, he was portrayed by Harrison Ford.

Although all three films were solid box-office hits, the series was rebooted to feature a younger leading man in the form of Affleck; likewise, the book's plotline was altered to make the grizzled veteran Ryan into a wet-behind-the-ears rookie, confronted with an unimaginable crisis on his first week on the job as a CIA analyst.

How ‘Rebel Ridge’ became the Emmy frontrunner for Best TV Movie
Image
Is Rebel Ridge about to follow in the Emmy-winning footsteps of Quiz Lady, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and ... Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers?

The Netflix telefilm has held the No. 1 spot in Gold Derby's Best TV Movie odds all season long, despite increasingly fierce competition from the likes of Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, Out of My Mind, Mountainhead, Am I Ok?, and The Gorge. Why? Perhaps Rebel Ridge is still coasting off its awards juice from earlier in the season, where it claimed prizes at the Critics Choice Awards (Best TV Movie) and Image Awards (Best Actor for Aaron Pierre), and scored nominations from the Producers Guild and Writers Guild, among others.

The action thriller stars Pierre as Terry Richmond, a former Marine who has a run-in with a small town's corrupt and racist police force, including Don Johnson's Chief Sandy Burnne. The cast is rounded out by AnnaSophia Robb,...

According to Deadline, plot details are being kept under wraps for Trigger Point, although sources state that the project will be a crime drama series. The spec script was written by Harrison Query, whose credits include the upcoming Paramount+ miniseries Unspeakable: The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey and the action comedy Heads of State starring John Cena and Idris Elba. Trigger Point reportedly cost A24 around $500,000, making this one of this year's biggest TV spec sales so far. Patrick Stewart Requested One Major Change In Star Trek: First Contact
Image
In Jonathan Frakes' 1996 film "Star Trek: First Contact," the Borg -- an invading force of malevolent cyborgs -- had formed an attack plan against Earth, and boy howdy, was it complicated. At first, they tried a frontal assault in one of their cube-shaped ships, but Starfleet fought them off. That, however, was only Plan A.

Plan B: While their ship was exploding, a miniature Borg envoy fled the scene and opened a time portal to the year 2063 (!). That was a year, Trekkies can tell you, when Earth was still recovering from a vicious World War, but also a year when a man named Zefram Cochran (James Cromwell) was building the planet's very first faster-than-light spacecraft. According to "Star Trek" history, Cochran would attract the attention of some passing Vulcans while testing his ship for the first time, causing them to land and greet humans. The first contact with an alien...

Simply put, there are a multitude of Stephen King television adaptations, with many not getting their just due during their initial release. Whether overshadowed by more prominent adaptations or relegated to more audience-neglected platforms, even King's name doesn't guarantee a show's success. Fortunately, many of these series' reputations have improved over time, with subsequent...

Babe review – tale of the talking sheep-pig a charming relic of its time
James Cromwell
A startling novelty 30 years ago, the film’s now antique effects and strange anti-Orwell farmyard tale feel dated, but is still a quaintly comfortable place to visit

Thirty years ago, a non-Disney talking-animal adventure became a big movie talking point. Babe, adapted from Dick King-Smith’s children’s book The Sheep-Pig, features an adorable piglet who is rescued from a brutally realistic-looking agribusiness breeding shed as his mum and siblings are taken off to be slaughtered; it is then rehomed in a quaintly old-fashioned farm with lots of different animals, situated in an uncanny-valley landscape of rolling green hills which looks like Olde England but where everyone speaks in an American accent. The lead human is grumpy cap-wearing Farmer Hoggett, played by James Cromwell, later to be hard-faced Captain Dudley Smith in LA Confidential and Prince Philip in Stephen Frears’ film The Queen. The little piglet does his best to...

Last call! 5 HBO shows are leaving Netflix in the US this summer and fall
Image
You’d best binge on some HBO shows on Netflix, as several will be leaving the streamer this summer and fall!

HBO and Netflix have had an up-and-down relationship over the years. HBO was okay with licensing some of their original shows to the streamer but obviously wanted to keep some bigger ones on HBO itself. The coming of Max means HBO doesn’t need Netflix as much.

2023 saw a new deal premiering several HBO shows on Netflix, but it looks like that agreement is coming to an end. There is a chance it could be renewed, so some of these stay after all, which is common for streamers. However, per What’s On Netflix, here’s a quick look at the five HBO shows that may be leaving Netflix this summer.

William Shatner will turn 94 years young on March 22, while George Takei will hit 88 on April 20, Walter Koenig will reach the 89-year mark in September, and Patrick Stewart will celebrate his 85th birthday on July 13. We scoured the internet, cross-referencing Star Trek, actors and actresses, and birth years. Laurence Luckinbill, who played Sybok in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, is 90. James Cromwell, who guest-starred in several episodes of several shows across the franchise and co-starred in Star Trek: First Contact, will turn 86 next January. Marsha Hunt, who guest starred as Anne Jameson in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Too Short a Season,” was 104 when she died in 2022. ‘Sugar’: Jin Ha, Laura Donnelly & Tony Dalton Join Apple Series For Season 2
Image
Exclusive: Sugar, starring and executive produced by Colin Farrell, has added three new series regulars for next season: Jin Ha, Laura Donnelly, Tony Dalton

Ha is one of the stars of Apple TV+’s historical drama Pachinko, which is still on the bubble, awaiting word on a Season 3 renewal. His casting in Sugar would not impact Pachinko; he would be able to do both.

I hear Ha will be playing a boxer who frequently gets caught up with the wrong crowds. Donnelly is believed to be playing a woman who is immune to Sugar’s (Farrell) charms; Dalton would play a Lieutenant in the LA County Sheriff’s Department.

Created by Mark Protosevich, Sugar is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture, and television history: the private detective story.

Danny DeVito at an event for Freedom Writers (2007)
L.A. Confidential (1997) Movie Review: A Snapshot of 1950s LAPD in a 1990s Neo-Noir
Danny DeVito at an event for Freedom Writers (2007)
Opening on an idyllic montage of Los Angeles, narrated by Hush Hush Magazine editor Sid Hudgens (Danny DeVito), Curtis Hanson’s L.A. Confidential (1997) paints the picturesque view you’d expect of the city of dreams. The narration twists across the media image of the place, buoyed by the wholesome family values projected by the USA in the 1950s. However, as soon as he can, as he does for most of the narrative, Sid pulls back the layer of this façade and presents the dreary and dangerously corrupt place the City of Angels truly is. The glitz and glamour cover up the element of organized crime running rampant through the city and the LAPD’s inability to contain it despite its reputation as the best police force in the world.

Sid Hudgens ends this narration and his front-page article on the fact that the criminal element has marked a sizeable shift in dynamics,...
