This Is the Last Movie Hank Hill Says He Enjoyed
Image
Hank Hill loves his family, propane and propane accessories — but how does he feel about movies?

In the recently-released 14th season of King of the Hill, both Peggy and Hank are now retired, and as a result, they have a whole lot more time for watching movies and TV. Although Hank initially resists weekday TV-watching. “We don’t live in an opium den,” he tells Peggy.

Nevertheless, he briefly joins her to watch the British reality show Make-Up Bake-Up, in which “a couple tries to work through their relationship issues while making a pastry, cake or tart.” Also, “they are naked.” (I had to double-check to make sure this wasn’t a real show.)

Later, Hank hate-watches the Property Brothers-esque reality show Property Twins. Laminate beams in a flood zone? Stupid Property Twins,” Hank complains. “They’d be better off installing sleeves onto their shirts.”

But when Peggy suggests...

The #1 Movie of All Time According to IMDb Is This 89% Fresh Stephen King Film That Lands on Peacock in August
Image
Many films are considered some of the best of all time but one of them stands out: The Shawshank Redemption. The epic prison drama is based on Stephen King's novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, and is widely singled out as the best adaptation of his works.

The Shawshank Redemption premiered in 1994, with Frank Darabont writing and directing. The movie starred Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, and although it has received critical acclaim for its message of perseverance and hope, it flopped in theaters when it came out. It has since become one of the most beloved films, and fans will get a chance to watch The Shawshank Redemption again soon as it's heading to Peacock on Aug. 1.

The prison drama film based on King's 1982 novella follows banker Andy Dufresne (Robbins), who is sentenced to two consecutive life sentences in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murders of his wife and her lover,...

An Easter Egg From George Lucas' First Sci-Fi Movie Appears All Over The Star Wars Franchise
Image
It's worth pausing to note that George Lucas has never directed a feature film that is set in the present. "American Graffiti," released in 1973, takes place in 1962. His many "Star Wars" movies, although containing starships and androids, are similarly set "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away." In all these cases, Lucas sees the past as an idealized time, when life was simpler and more pleasant. In the case of "American Graffiti," the past was the calm before the storm, back when life was nothing but potential energy and the future was ready to be explored. In the case of the "Star Wars" films, it was a time when brave heroes rose up to battle fascism and evil empires regularly tumbled.

The future, Lucas feels, is a dour time, and nothing good will happen to humanity when we get there. At the end of "American Graffiti," for instance,...

The Forgotten Family Drama You Didn't Realize Landman's Billy Bob Thornton Wrote
Image
As a cinephile, one of my favorite things to do is rediscover underseen and forgotten gems directed or written by big-time Hollywood actors. It's akin to finding gold in places you walked by a thousand times before but never bothered to look at them closely. That's how I discovered Robert Redford's fascinating historical masterpiece "Quiz Show" a few years ago, and the same way I found Richard Pearce's heartfelt 1996 family drama, "A Family Thing," written by Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson. Thornton and Epperson actually collaborated on several screenplays — including the cult classic crime flick "One False Move" and Sam Raimi's mystery horror "The Gift" — throughout their careers. "A Family Thing" came just before the former's celebrated directorial debut, "Sling Blade," which he wrote and won an Oscar for in 1997.

I bring up "Sling Blade" because the film shares some important roots with "A Family Thing.

Matt Damon Lost A Lot Of Weight For A Two-Day Shoot With Denzel Washington
Image
There are certain movie stars who have "It" the second they walk in front of a camera. It might not happen for them immediately, but all casting directors and filmmakers had to do was watch a minute or two of Cary Grant, Marlene Dietrich, Carole Lombard, or Paul Newman to know that they'd be topping marquees and posters for decades to come. For Gen X-ers, the same could be said of Denzel Washington, Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise, and Halle Berry. For Millennials and Zoomers, you've got Michael B. Jordan, Florence Pugh, Glen Powell, and Sydney Sweeney.

Some future movie stars don't pop like this. They need seasoning and, most importantly, the right role to demonstrate that they're capable of carrying a movie. I don't think anyone envisioned Gene Hackman as a leading man until they saw him whoop it up as Buck Barrow in "Bonnie and Clyde," nor was Renée Zellweger...

Robert Duvall Revealed The Real Reason Why ‘The Godfather’ Was More Fun Than ‘The Godfather 2’
Image
The Godfather was a 1972 film that literally changed how people perceived gangsters. Following the story of Vito Corleone and his eventual giving up of power, The Godfather was a power struggle where unwilling people had to step in to take control of the family to keep it safe.

Featuring a ton of characters throughout the trilogy, The Godfather trilogy was Francis Ford Coppola at his finest. Robert Duvall, who portrayed the role of Tom Hagen (the consigliere and head lawyer of the Corleone family), talked about an iconic star who gave it all for one of the best performances of all time.

James Caan portrayed the role of Sonny Corleone, the eldest son of Vito Corleone, and was the acting don of the family while Vito Corleone slowly moved towards retirement.

Bad Day: Cameron Diaz to star in a Falling Down-like action comedy for Netflix
Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu in Charlie's Angels (2000)
Bring out your Spider-Man briefs and do the Charlie’s Angels booty dance because Cameron Diaz is back, baby! After co-starring alongside Jamie Foxx in the Seth Gordon-directed spy comedy Back in Action, Diaz is re-teaming with Netflix for Bad Day, an action comedy with vibes similar to Joel Schumacher’s 1993 psychological drama Falling Down.

Jury Duty helmer Jake Szymanski will direct Bad Day from a script by Laura Solon, with the plot focusing on “a single mom fighting to keep one little promise to her daughter on the absolute worst day of her life.”

Beau Bauman, who produced Back in Action, will produce through his Good One Productions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bad Day is described as a comedic version of Falling Down, Schumacher’s tragic thriller starring Michael Douglas, Barbara Hershey, and Robert Duvall. It is about an ordinary man frustrated with the various flaws he sees in society,...

Why Tom Cruise Left Stephen King's The Shawshank Redemption
Image
For young audiences who have seen Tom Cruise star in little but just "Mission: Impossible" movies and would-be franchise starters for the past 25 years, it can be hard to imagine when the President of Movies was not just a big box office draw but also a very sought after dramatic actor who worked with the finest directors in the industry.

Indeed, back in the '90s, Tom Cruise starred in a string of commercial and critical hits, acclaimed movies from proven auteurs that made money and got accolades, from "Days of Thunder" and "The Firm" to "Interview with the Vampire" and "Eyes Wide Shut." But for as many movies Tom Cruise was in that were hits, there are also movies Cruise was at some point or another attached to but ultimately was not a part of. One such movie is the notorious box office bomb that ended up becoming a cult classic,...

Matt Damon's Early Western Flop Found A Fan In Quentin Tarantino
Image
There are few interview subjects more candid, unpredictable, and downright entertaining than Quentin Tarantino. As far as filmmakers go, he exists on a saltily rarified plane with trash-talker supreme Orson Welles. He can be dishy, prickly and outrageously cocky, but as arguably the most influential filmmaker of his generation, he's at least earned the right to sound off on all things cinematic. And while I don't always agree with him, I appreciate that his opinions are coming from a fiercely sincere and deeply knowledgeable place.

While I enjoy Tarantino's brashness, I think he's at his very best when he goes to the mat for underappreciated film artists. Soon after he broke through with "Reservoir Dogs" in 1992 and established himself as an outspoken cinephile, he championed the films of Brian De Palma. This was not exactly an opportune time to sing the director's praises, as he'd just hit the skids...

10 Western TV Shows Better Than Yellowstone to Watch Now
Image
So Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone has finally ridden off into the sunset. Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III, all gravel-voiced grit and rancher gravitas, left behind more than just a power vacuum in Montana. He left a void in our streaming queues and our hearts. And no, a dozen Sheridan spin-offs won’t quite cut it. Because if you’re aching for something that hits just as hard, or even harder, in the Western genre, you’re in for a treat.

Some of these shows are classic dusty-saddle epics; others throw lasso-sized curveballs with sci-fi twists, feminist vengeance, or steely-eyed detectives. But they all have one thing in common: they echo that thunderous energy Yellowstone fans crave.

From Robert Duvall’s swagger in Lonesome Dove to Timothy Olyphant’s lawman cool in Justified, to the almost poetic lawlessness of Deadwood, each series here offers something Yellowstone touched on but never fully mastered.

‘Crimson Tide’ Sequel In The Works Says, Jerry Bruckheimer
Image
When it comes to the great Jerry Bruckheimer action films before the $1.49 billion-grossing success of Top Gun: Maverick, most of them are game for a sequel, including one to the 1995 Tony Scott-directed nuclear submarine thriller, Crimson Tide.

“We have a really good director-writer talking to the Navy right now about what’s going on under the water,” Bruckheimer said in an interview with Rich Eisen. ‘We have Denzel [Washington]. If we give him a good script, I think he’d do it.”

Disney had no further comment relating to the status of Crimson Tide or talent attached, the movie being a theatrical release from its adult Touchstone division.

“We had Quentin Tarantino and Robert Towne writing on that film,” said Bruckheimer about the original. “I don’t know if I’ll ever replicate that type of writing on a film.”

Marlon Brando and Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now (1979)
Hearts of Darkness: A Film-Maker’s Apocalypse review – Francis Ford Coppola and the mother of all meltdowns
Marlon Brando and Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now (1979)
Coppola said his masterpiece Apocalypse Now ‘is not about Vietnam; it is Vietnam’ – this superb film shows how little he was exaggerating

The greatest ever making-of documentary is now on re-release: the terrifying story of how Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam war masterpiece Apocalypse Now got made – even scarier than Les Blank’s Burden of Dreams, about the making of Werner Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo. The time has come to acknowledge Eleanor Coppola’s magnificent achievement here as first among equals of the credited directors in shooting the original location footage (later interspersed with interviews by Fax Bahr and George Hickenlooper), getting the stunningly intimate audio tapes of her husband Francis’s meltdown moments and, of course, in unassumingly keeping the family together while it was all going on.

With his personal and financial capital very high after The Conversation and the Godfather films, Coppola put up his own money and...

5 Reasons Why an Arnold Schwarzenegger Cult Classic Outplayed ‘Mickey 17’?
Image
Bong Joon Ho possesses a once-in-a-generation directorial voice, which made the banality of “Mickey 17” all the more surprising. In theory, a sprawling sci-fi epic about clones helmed by the “Snowpiercer” director should’ve been another sleek, genre-bending masterpiece. Instead, it stumbled and faltered at the box office, receiving mixed reviews.

While it’s by no means a bad film, a plucky 2000 action flick starring Arnold Schwarzenegger tackled the concept of cloning with a stronger plot, greater stakes, and a bit more fun. “The 6th Day” wasn’t groundbreaking, but it left a more substantial impact on the genre than anyone could’ve predicted. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cult classic might even outlast “Mickey 17” as the definitive cloning movie of this era.

Here are five reasons why Schwarzenegger’s campy clone adventure makes “Mickey 17” look like an underbaked replica.

Adam Evolves. Mickey Just Suffers.

Days of Thunder: Before F1 rocked us, Tom Cruise took us for a ride
Image
This weekend sees the release of F1, a movie which reunites some of the important creatives before Top Gun: Maverick, notably director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Starring Brad Pitt, it feels very much like a Tom Cruise movie, minus Tom Cruise, but the superstar has been outspoken in his support of the project. In fact, he took to his Instagram today to pen a tribute to both F1 and his own attempt at racing epic, Days of Thunder, which turns thirty-five this week.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tom Cruise (@tomcruise)

1990’s Days of Thunder was the end of an era for Tom Cruise. It would be the last movie he’d make as part of his “youth” phase, which began with Risky Business. At the time, he was best known as the cocky young hot shot, but when this movie underperformed at the box office,...

'F1' Director Teases Crossover With Tom Cruise’s 'Days of Thunder'
Image
Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt appeared on the big screen together for the first and last time in 1994's Interview With the Vampire, a film that still resonates with fans today. Recently, Pitt said he would love to reunite with Cruise if he didn't have to do any of the death-defying stunts that have become a signature for the actor. Leave it to director Joseph Kosinski, who just worked with Pitt on F1: The Movie and previously collaborated with Cruise on Top Gun: Maverick, to find the perfect solution. Should a sequel to F1 happen, he believes it should also be a crossover with Cruise's cult-classic racing film from the '90s.

During a chat with GQ Magazine, Kosinski said his ideal sequel to F1 would involve bringing in Cruise's character Cole Trickle from the 1990 racing film, Days of Thunder. Now that Kosinski has a history of working with both iconic actors,...

Denzel Washington’s Forgotten $102 Million Medical Drama Is About to Leave Streaming Soon
Image
Denzel Washington directed an episode of Grey’s Anatomy in 2016, but long before that, the Oscar-winning star featured in another medical drama that just got a disappointing streaming update. Washington stars alongside Robert Duvall in John Q, the medical drama/crime thriller following John Quincy Archibald (Washington), a man who takes a hospital emergency room hostage when insurance won’t pay for his son’s important procedure.John Q is streaming exclusively on Prime Video, but the streamer has unfortunately announced that the last day to watch the film will be at the end of the month on June 30. John Q was controversial upon release, earning a 28% score from critics but a 72% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. However, that didn’t stop it from grossing $102 million at the box office against a $36 million budget.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news, Betts died Thursday in his sleep at his Los Osos, Calif. home, his nephew, Dean Sullivan, said.

The Iconic Movie Spielberg Called the 'Greatest American Film Ever Made' Gets a Major Surge on Streaming
Image
The film industry features millions and millions of projects, and there is a genre and subgenre for everyone. However, few films have received the status of "one of the greatest" of all time.

The Godfather series is among them. The trilogy won major awards, winning nine out of its 28 Academy Award nominations, and generally earned high praise not just from moviegoers but from other filmmakers, as well. Now, the first installment, which also received high praise from Steven Spielberg, has just experienced a major surge on streaming, per FlixPatrol.

The 1972 crime film just debuted on Paramount+, and it almost went all the way to the top. Francis Ford Coppola's Oscar-winning film debuted in second place in the U.S., becoming a streaming hit, too.

Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather trilogy received praise for the first two entries. Spielberg, who helmed some of the greatest films ever made, like Jaws,...

Brad Pitt’s F1 Film Creating Buzz? Revisit This 1990 Tom Cruise Racing Classic! (Photo Credit – YouTube)

Brad Pitt’s upcoming F1 movie, directed by Joseph Kosinski, is generating buzz for its immersive, Pov-style racing sequences, reminiscent of the latter’s work in Top Gun: Maverick. But 35 years before this, Tom Cruise and original Top Gun director Tony Scott had already taken a similar route. The duo’s 1990 film Days of Thunder brought the adrenaline of NASCAR to the big screen, marking one of Cruise’s last action-heavy roles before he temporarily shifted gears into dramatic territory. This exhilarating actioner not only spotlights high-speed thrills but also takes us back to the early ’90s zeitgeist of racing, making it a must-watch for motorsport enthusiasts.

Days of Thunder Plot: Cole Trickle’s Rise in NASCAR

Days of Thunder became Tom Cruise’s third sports film after All the Right Moves and The Color of Money.

Remembering the day Star Trek legend William Shatner crooned "My Way" to Star Wars creator George Lucas
Image
Attendees at the 33rd annual American Film Institute Life Achievement Award ceremony honoring Star Wars creator George Lucas got a surprise from the final frontier when, of all people, William Shatner, Star Trek’s original Captain Kirk, arrived on stage to open the festivities. It happened on June 9, 2005, and it remains an indelible moment of entertainment galaxies colliding.

Shatner basked in the moment, giving a remarkably Shatner-ian performance. He hammed it up, smiled broadly, joked about his hair (comparing it to the honoree’s iconic follicles), and, yes, sang. Upon Shatner's introduction, the faces of Lucas, Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Chewbacca all expressed shock. Shatner then elicited chuckles with his opening line: “Star Trek changed everything.” He then cracked, “Aren’t these conventions wonderful?” And from there, after two stormtroopers nearly carried him off the stage, Shatner engaged in his signature talk-sing warbling, delivering a...

Pixar's 'Coco' Director Pays Tribute to Abuelita Actress Renée Victor
Image
Lee Unkrich, the director of Disney and Pixar's Coco, has paid tribute to Abuelita actress Renée Victor following the news of her death. It was reported over the weekend that Victor, the TV and film actress best known for playing Miguel's grandmother in the 2017 animated feature film and starring as Lupita in Showtime's dark comedy-drama Weeds, among many other roles throughout her decades-long career, had died at her home in Sherman Oaks, California, on May 30 surrounded by her family after a battle with lymphoma. She was 86.

Unkrich honored Victor with a post on Instagram, sharing a side-by-side image of the actress and her fan-favorite character in Coco, who went by the name Elena Rivera, but was often addressed as Abuelita (an affectionate Spanish word for "grandma"). Francis Ford Coppola’s Original 1979 Version of ‘Apocalypse Now’ Lands 4K Re-Release — Watch Trailer
Image
Yes, Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic “Apocalypse Now” is back in theaters — and this time, it’s with a 4K restoration of the original 1979 theatrical version. IndieWire can debut the trailer for the new iteration of the beloved war epic that stars Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Frederic Forrest, Dennis Hopper, Laurence Fishburne, and Marlon Brando.

“Apocalypse Now” is presented in 4K thanks to Coppola’s American Zoetrope. The original 1979 film’s “Roadshow” version, which is what debuted in theaters on its first release, has rarely been screened theatrically. Now, the Film Forum in New York is bringing the feature back to the big screen. Coppola directed the originally 149-minute long film from a script he cowrote with John Milius. The film is inspired by Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness,” which later became the title of late Eleanor Coppola’s documentary about the controversial production of “Apocalypse Now.” (That documentary...

The Godfather’s Secret Weapon: How Marlon Brando Used A Real Mob Informant To Craft Vito Corleone
Image
Who Inspired The Voice Of Marlon Brando’s Vito Corleone In The Godfather? (Photo Credit – Netflix)

Vito Corleone appears in The Godfather with a voice that barely rises above a whisper, yet no one dares ignore him. Marlon Brando made sure of that. His performance in the role elevated the film and became one of the main reasons the gangster genre found new life and lasting respect.

Brando, despite being surrounded by an already legendary cast, including the likes of Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Diane Keaton, still managed to leave the deepest mark in the movie. He didn’t need much screen time to do it, either. He brought gravity and an unforgettable presence to a man who never had to shout to be heard.

The Real-Life Inspiration Behind Marlon Brando’s Vito Corleone Voice In The Godfather

Kevin Costner’s 23 Year Old Western Was the Spiritual Sequel to Clint Eastwood’s ‘Unforgiven’ Starring Diego Luna
Image
If anyone (or two) can break the narrative that there needs to be only one maestro in one genre, that will be Kevin Costner and Clint Eastwood. As the two stars have accumulated decades of experience in their resume, they have also cultivated the reputation of auteurs of Western cinema.

While Costner and Eastwood’s filmographies often fall under the lens for a perceived competition, more often than not, their Westerns complement each other.

Following the success of his Dances With Wolves, Costner went on to direct a few more Westerns, including Open Range in 2003, starring a pre-Andor Diego Luna. Despite Open Range being a Costner film, spiritually it was more akin to Eastwood’s 1992 tentpole, Unforgiven.

The ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Uncensored Oral History of a Revolution
Image
The Handmaid’s Tale is ending. But to borrow a quote from Margaret Atwood, the end is not the end. And the Hulu series wasn’t the beginning of The Handmaid’s Tale, either.

Back in 1985, Atwood published her best-selling novel of the same name, a near-future dystopian tale about a totalitarian regime, the Republic of Gilead, overthrowing the U.S. government and stripping women of their rights amid a global fertility crisis. The story was told from the point of view of a woman who is renamed Offred after she’s captured, separated from her daughter and forced to be a “handmaid” in Gilead (fertile surrogates for the elite ruling class).

Over the years, Offred’s harrowing and heroic story burrowed itself into the imaginations of readers. Among them was Bruce Miller, who was tapped to adapt the book into the terrifyingly timely Emmy-winning series — after a years-long development process that included lost TV rights,...

Tom Cruise Confirms Development Of Legacy Sequel To 35-Year-Old Action Movie Is Underway
Image
Legacy sequels have been coming out more over the past couple of years. Last year saw the release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a follow-up to Tim Burton's 1988 film Beetlejuice. Despite initially being slated for release soon after the first film, it spent years in development, and ultimately took decades to come out. Another 21st century legacy sequel came in the form of Blade Runner 2049, which came out 35 years after the original movie. These movies tend to do well in theaters, as they inspire both new and returning audiences who are interested in the nostalgia of it all.

One of the 21st century's most successful sequels was Top Gun: Maverick. Similarly to Blade Runner 2049, the movie came out over 35 years after Tom Cruise's 1986 original. Even with the delay, the film did tremendously upon its release, making just shy of $1.5 billion. Maverick was also nominated for several Oscars, including Best Picture,...

Tom Cruise Says He’s ‘Working On’ Potential Sequels for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Days of Thunder’: ‘We’re Thinking and Talking About Many Different Stories’
Image
As the “Mission: Impossible” franchise comes to a close, Tom Cruise is raising the curtain on his next blockbuster projects.

In a recent sit-down with the Today Show Australia, Cruise said that he and his team are “working on” potential sequels for 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick” and the 1990 racing thriller “Days of Thunder.”

“Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible,” Cruise said. “It took me 35 years to figure out ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing ‘Days of Thunder’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’”

He continued, “There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now. I’m always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film. I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did ‘The Revenant,’ and we’ll be coming out with that.

Tarak Ben Ammar Thanks George Lucas, Roberto Rossellini While Being Honored at Variety’s Welcome to Cannes
Image
Tarak Ben Ammar, the legendary producer and distributor, said his life may have turned out very differently if a Variety reporter named Hank Werba hadn’t written about his efforts to convince filmmakers to make their movies in Tunisia.

It was that decades-old article, in which Ben Ammar pitched the North African nation as “peaceful” and “inexpensive” place to make films, that caught the attention of George Lucas, who decided to shoot parts of “Star Wars” in the country.

“[Variety] believed in this young man that was selling nonsense and dreams,” Ben Ammar said, while accepting the International Achievement in Film Award at Variety‘s annual Welcome to Cannes Party, hosted in partnership with the Gotham Film & Media Institute.

Entertainment industry movers and shakers gathered at the Majestic Hotel, Salon Croisette to celebrate Ben Ammar’s many achievements and kick off the festival in style. Guests included Sony Pictures Classics...

Image
Acclaimed actor Tom Cruise offers an encouraging progress report about the long-announced Top Gun 3, as it appears the action threequel will eventually take flight. However, the next Top Gun installment isn't the only sequel Cruise has in the works, hinting at his cult classic sports drama, Days of Thunder, getting the follow-up treatment too.

Speaking with Australia's Today, Cruise claimed that the third Top Gun film and a second Days of Thunder movie are among the new projects he's recently discussed making. “Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible,” Cruise said. “It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing [sequels to] Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick. John Wayne's Greatest Contribution To Westerns, According To Himself
Image
It is difficult to think of a movie star who did more to dictate the course of motion pictures in the United States during the 20th century than John Wayne. The Iowa native, who owes his acting career to John Ford and Tom Mix doing legendary USC football coach Howard Jones a minor favor, slugged it out as a contract player throughout the 1930s until, at tail end of the decade, he twirl-cocked a Winchester rifle as the Ringo Kid in "Stagecoach." That moment, that movie, changed the Western forever. Before Ford's masterpiece, the genre was basically pulp cinema; after it became a massive hit, Westerns acquired the power of myth.

Wayne firmly believed Westerns existed to tell tales about the pursuit of America's manifest destiny. Wayne was so serious about this that, late in his career, when Clint Eastwood approached him about co-starring in a Western together, he...

Joe Don Baker at an event for The Dukes of Hazzard (2005)
Joe Don Baker, Rugged Star of ‘Walking Tall,’ Dies at 89
Joe Don Baker at an event for The Dukes of Hazzard (2005)
Joe Don Baker, the broad-shouldered Texas tough guy who portrayed characters on both sides of the law, most notably Sheriff Buford Pusser in the unexpected box-office hit Walking Tall, died May 7, his family announced. He was 89.

Baker first attracted mainstream attention in 1972 when he starred as the younger, business-minded brother of an aging Arizona rodeo rider (Steve McQueen) in Sam Peckinpah’s Junior Bonner (1972), then portrayed a sadistic mob hitman named Molly in Don Siegel’s Charley Varrick (1973), starring Walter Matthau.

In James Bond films, the 6-foot-3 Baker played a villain, the megalomaniacal arms dealer Brad Whitaker, in The Living Daylights (1987), starring Timothy Dalton as 007, then returned as a good guy, CIA agent Jack Wade, opposite Pierce Brosnan in the 1995 and ’97 movies GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies, respectively.

As former professional wrestler Pusser — based on a real-life sheriff who cleaned up crime in his Tennessee town — Baker survives a series...

Why A Rotten Jason Statham Crime Thriller Was A Bigger Deal Than You Realized
Image
There is very little that is remarkable about Taylor Hackford's 2013 actioner "Parker" starring Jason Statham. The title character is, like so many action movie protagonists before him, defined largely by his taciturn and steely demeanor and doesn't have a lot of whimsy or personality beyond that. Parker is a thief, but he is defined by an unshakable code of ethics and believes in sticking to well laid-out plans. He's not a hothead or impulsive. In other words: he's kind of boring. It also doesn't help that "Parker" has a predictable plot stretched out across a dull screenplay. The film came and went without fanfare, a January release to its very core.

"Parker" made $46.9 million at the box office on a $35 million budget, which is a bomb on a Hollywood ledger. It was only lukewarmly received by critics, sporting a 41% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 105 reviews). Peter Sobczynski's review for RogerEbert.

“It Would Be Impossible”: ‘Parent Trap’ Sequel Gets a Definitively Disappointing Update From Dennis Quaid
Image
Dennis Quaid has cast doubt on the possibility of The Parent Trap ever getting a sequel. The 1998 film stars Quaid opposite the late Natasha Richardson, with Lindsay Lohan playing both of the children — Hallie Parker and Annie James — who were raised separately but are now trying to bring their parents back together. The way the film portrays family dynamics by separating identical twins at birth and never mentioning to one that they even have a twin, only to use them to reunite the parents, was viewed as controversial by many upon release. During a recent interview with Business Insider to talk about his new project, Happy Face, Quaid poured cold water on the possibility of him ever returning for a sequel to the 1998 film:

"There had been some talk, but it would be impossible to do now... No, and nobody else does. I don't think we'd have the heart for it.

This Pair of 1998 Disaster Films Told Nearly Identical Stories -- But One Was Much More Realistic
Image
In the summer of 1998, two asteroid disaster films hit theaters just weeks apart. Armageddon and Deep Impact told nearly the same story: a massive asteroid is heading for Earth, and humanity races against the clock to stop it. Both feature ensemble casts, space missions, global panic, and sacrifices. But beyond the shared premise, the two films took very different approaches. One leaned into spectacle and style. The other aimed for something more realistic.

For years, people have debated which film did it better. But if the question is which one came closer to how an actual planet-killing event might unfold, there’s a clear answer. While Armageddon went all-in on blockbuster thrills, Deep Impact took a slower, more calculated route and ended up telling the more realistic version of the story.

Deep Impact and Armageddon Both Focus on the World's End from an Asteroid

Both Deep Impact & Armageddon, released in 1998, share a similar plot.

William Shatner & 14 Other Actors You Didn't Know Were in The Twilight Zone
Image
Among the various anthology television series of the 1960s, none are better-known or more influential than The Twilight Zone. A mix of science fiction, fantasy and horror, The Twilight Zone was conceived by Rod Serling as a weekly allegory and modern-day morality play. As an anthology, the series became a revolving door for existing stars and up-and-coming actors over its five-season run.

Premiering on October 2, 1959, The Twilight Zone aired for nearly five years and featured numerous actors at various stages of their careers. With 156 episodes, multiple reboots, and the 1983 movie, it's easy to forget some of the famous faces that graced the original series over the years. Most of them appeared on the show before they became famous, and because The Twilight Zone has stood the test of time, those early performances have become delightful Easter eggs for new fans to discover.

Before 'The Godfather,' Francis Ford Coppola Made This Devastating, Complex, R-Rated Drama With James Caan and Robert Duvall
Image
Becoming a legendary filmmaker like Francis Ford Coppola, director of The Godfather, doesn't occur overnight. For him, the path to masterful directing was a decade-long journey, starting with his enrollment in the Roger Corman school of low-budget, exploitation filmmaking to his misbegotten studio projects like the bloated musical, Finian's Rainbow. Nothing in his oeuvre suggested that he was destined to redefine American cinema by adapting Mario Puzo's best-selling novel until his 1969 film, The Rain People, where Coppola decided to strip down and focus on the essentials of character and performance work. This road drama, featuring future Godfather stars James Caan and Robert Duvall, is a somber portrait of the perils of re-building a new life and running away from your mundane past self, which contains reflections on Coppola's personal background.

Liam Neeson Regrets Starring In One Of His Best Crime Thrillers
Image
Liam Neeson is, if nothing else, a very candid interview subject. Sometimes he's candid to a problematic fault. Regardless of how you feel about the man, however, you cannot accuse him of giving canned answers, which is what renders too many interviews unworthy of a reader's time.

With a film acting career that spans over 40 years, stretching back to his portrayal of the knight Gawain in John Boorman's Arthurian "Excalibur," the Irish-born Neeson has put together a career that prompts many questions. He went Hollywood early, and seemed stuck in a rut acting in forgettable films like "Suspect," "Satisfaction," and "The Good Mother." I didn't really take measure of him as a performer until he played Patrick Swayze's vengeful, incredibly lethal hillbilly brother in "Next of Kin." His high-pitched voice and not-entirely-hidden Irish lilt is actually perfect for an Appalachian hill person, and even though the film is just a studio programmer,...

Is there any contemporary actor more iconic than Nicolas Cage? Instantly identifiable and beloved by both mainstream audiences and cult aficionados, it’s hard to believe that there was a time when Nicolas Cage wasn’t considered a bankable leading man. While movies like Raising Arizona and Moonstruck established him as a quirky lead, in 1990, he made an action movie called Fire Birds, which was like Top Gun with helicopters and whiffed at the box office. He had a solid hit as a romantic lead in Honeymoon in Vegas. However, in 1995, the same year he delivered an Academy Award-winning performance in Leaving Las Vegas, he was still considered so minor of a star that David Caruso took top billing over him in their remake of Kiss of Death – which – by the way – was another flop. However, that all changed when uber producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer decided Cage had potential as an action hero,...
