Bryan Cranston won four Emmys for playing a power-hungry drug kingpin on AMC's landmark drama series Breaking Bad. But when he's not masquerading as the ruthless "one who knocks," the actor also enjoys showing off his comedic side.
Two decades ago, he received a trio of Emmy nominations for his role as Hal, the carefree husband and father on Malcolm in the Middle. He also earned laughs playing dentist Tim Whatley on Seinfeld, therapist Dr. Templeton on Curb Your Enthusiasm, and a heightened version of himself on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Now, he's yucking it up as The Studio's Griffin Mill, the outlandish CEO of Continental Studios, who's never met a psychedelic mushroom he didn't like. Cranston is nominated in Best Comedy Guest Actor alongside last year's winner, Jon Bernthal as Michael Berzatto for The Bear, plus four people from The Studio who are playing comedic versions of themselves: Dave Franco,...

Julianne Nicholson may live quietly in the English countryside, but this Emmy season, she’s making noise in Hollywood. With two Emmy nominations — for her haunting turn in Hulu’s post-apocalyptic political thriller “Paradise” and her scene-stealing comedic performance in HBO Max’s “Hacks” — Nicholson has evolved from industry favorite to awards season darling.
“I know it’s greedy,” she says during the episode on the Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, “but it took me 30 years to get here, so I thought, let’s just start stacking them up.”
It’s dry, self-effacing humor that’s classic Nicholson. Behind the humility lies a career moment: another piece of recognition for her work that’s long been critically admired, often under the radar, but now gaining broader appreciation. Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast caught up with Nicholson to discuss her dual Emmy noms and more. Listen below!

Since at least the late '90s, HBO has been hailed as the gold standard of television. When people think about the network, the same sort of work usually comes to mind. Whether it's classic prestige TV shows "The Wire," "The Sopranos," or "Six Feet Under" or groundbreaking contemporary miniseries like "Watchmen," "The Night Of," or "I May Destroy You." Heck, even their biggest misses like "The Idol" or "John From Cincinnati" are fascinating works of art.
As much praise is heaped on HBO, however, surprisingly little is afforded for the litany of feature films they produce and release every year. With such a large back catalog of great movies to choose from, we've selected the 15 best HBO original movies to get your next marathon underway.

Cape Fear is getting ready to cast off. The Apple TV+ series, the third screen adaptation of John D. MacDonald's psychological thriller novel The Executioners, has wrapped filming. Director Reed Morano commemorated the end of production on Instagram with a thank-you message to the series' cast and crew.
In the message celebrating the end of production in Atlanta, Morano pays tribute to "this miraculously beautiful shoot, these obscenely talented actors, this f***ing A+++++ crew of top level pros and one hell of a bonkers juicy story." She also deems the shoot to be one of "the most epic, gorgeous, insane & wildly inspiring experiences I’ve had to date." She thanks Javier Bardem, who will play the villainous Max Cady; Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson, who play protagonists Anna and Tom Bowden; cast members Lily Collias, Joe Anders, and Malia Pyles; and executive producers Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.

Everyone's got to start somewhere, and that somewhere ain't necessarily got to be pretty. Take Tom Cruise, for example. He made his film acting debut in Franco Zeffirelli's teen romance "Endless Love," an avalanche of ick notable for its Diana Ross/Lionel Richie theme song and notorious for the scene where Shirley Knight's bohemian mother watches approvingly from the top of a staircase as her 15-year-old daughter (Brooke Shields) has firelit sex with her 17-year-old boyfriend (Martin Hewitt). Somehow, Cruise survived this association with one of the most atrociously awful movies of the 1980s to become one of the world's biggest movie stars.
On the less scandalous end of the spectrum, Paul Newman's first movie was the biblical epic "The Silver Chalice," for which he received mostly lousy reviews. Jessica Lange was ridiculed for conjuring the ghost of Carole Lombard to play a daffy starlet in the 1976 remake of "King Kong.

Hollywood has always been a boy's club. Worse than that, it's been a haven of sexual abuse. The town has buildings and theaters named after the likes of Columbia Pictures co-founder Harry Cohn and 20th Century Fox co-founder Daryl F. Zanuck, both of whom were notorious for coercing (or attempting to coerce) female stars into sex in exchange for work. For all of the breathtakingly gifted women who made it through Hollywood's sexist gauntlet to become movie stars, you can't help but wonder how many singular talents got destroyed by the town's monstrous gatekeepers.
Because talent truly didn't matter to these ghouls. They just wanted, in their view, a dazzling dame who could light up the screen with their looks and sign a contract nowhere near commensurate with their value to the studio. Some of the women in their employ could stand up to them. Joan Crawford once shut Cohn down by saying,...

“American Horror Story“ mainstay Sarah Paulson said in October that the odds were favorable for a series return. Over the weekend, series creator Ryan Murphy took it a step further with a new tease for the upcoming 13th season.
Paulson has been a regular part of FX’s anthology horror series since her recurring role as psychic Billie Dean Howard in the first season, Murder House, in 2011. The actor’s last appearance on the show was in Season 10’s Double Feature.
“Sarah Paulson and I are cooking up something cool!” Murphy replied to a fan asking for an AHS update under an Instagram post featuring first-look images from American Love Story.
While this is official confirmation that Paulson is returning for the 13th season, it’s unclear at what capacity. Very little is known about the new season at all, including theme. Considering that Murphy has stated before that he...

When an Og actor returns to a series, it feels like the debut season all over again. Nothing is better than seeing a familiar face in an anthology series, even though they'll most likely be playing a completely different role. Still, their presence brings a certain touch that was missing when they departed. That's most likely how American Horror Story viewers felt when they no longer saw Sarah Paulson in the horror anthology. Yet, it is still popular and is now heading into Season 13 with "something cool," according to creator Ryan Murphy.
Nowadays, making it beyond several seasons is nearly unheard of, which is why, to keep the show a trending topic, creator Ryan Murphy is giving people what they want: details about the long-awaited new season. According to Deadline, the Golden Globe winner teased that Paulson would return to the show in some capacity. This is after a fan...

Alright, it seems American Horror Story’s Ryan Murphy may have finally remembered the secret ingredient to his spooky stew: Sarah Paulson. Yes, the unofficial CEO of creepy facial expressions and emotional meltdowns that could win Oscars on their own. For a show that’s been wheezing like a haunted accordion since Cult, this news lands like a double espresso on a Monday morning. After years of storyline spaghetti and location-hopping, AHS might just be getting its groove and its geography back.
Translation: Emergency horror CPR is underway. Paulson has done everything short of marrying a demon on screen. And if anyone can save AHS from its own confusion, it’s her.

Glee makes it three straight at the Tonys.
When Darren Criss picked up a Tony Award on Sunday night for best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical for his turn in Maybe Happy Ending, the veteran star became the third straight Glee alum to win a trophy on Broadway’s biggest night. Deadline reports that prolific producer Ryan Murphy is setting up his next project at FX, a series adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis‘ The Shards starring Kaia Gerber (American Horror Story).
The series will be directed by Max Winkler, who has worked on many Muprhy projects. He’s helmed episodes of American Horror Story, American Horror Stories, The Watcher, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, Monster: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and Grotesquerie.
The Shards is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age tale which follows a 17-year-old version of Ellis during his final year at Buckley prep school. When the enigmatic new student Robert Mallory arrives on campus, Ellis suspects he might be connected to the nearby serial killer known as The Trawler. The story was initially released on Ellis’ Patreon in 2020 as a serialized audiobook, but was published as a novel in 2023.

Joe Don Baker, who played a bad guy and a CIA agent in three James Bond films and the star of the classic movie Walking Tall, has died aged 89. His family announced on May 7 that the actor had passed, but no cause of death was revealed. Baker established himself as an action star, first appearing in minor roles on television and in films in the mid-to-late '60s. It wasn't long before he snagged his breakthrough role as real-life Tennessee Sheriff Buford Pusser in the 1976 movie Walking Tall. After that, leading and supporting roles flowed in for the Texas native, who played basketball and football in school.
After serving two years in the United States Army, Baker moved to New York City to study at the Actors Studio. While there, during the 1963-1964 Broadway season, he appeared onstage in Marathon '33, a play based on June Havoc's memoir, which...

Back in 2016, I wrote an article here when one of my favorite actresses, Jessica Lange, won a Tony for Long Day’s Journey into Night, thereby joining the club of elite actors who had achieved the Triple Crown of Acting. Only 24 actors have ever achieved this, and since Lange eight years ago, only two people have joined that list (Viola Davis in 2017 with her Emmy; Glenda Jackson in 2018 with her Tony).
I thought it would be fun to take a look at who is a realistic possibility to join that club. I’m reminded of it because, until just a few days ago, there was a chance that person was going to be Kieran Culkin! Culkin had been largely predicted to be...

Disney TV’s studio head has offered an update on the future of American Horror Story. In an interview with Deadline, Eric Schrier gave an update on life after season 13 of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's anthology series.
He admitted that the network doesn't "have another incarnation of American Horror Story ordered" at the moment, but they would be up for it if “Ryan has an idea that is great.” American Horror Story ran for 12 seasons between 2011 and 2024, with AHS season 13 on the way next year. Over the years, the show has covered haunted houses and hotels, aliens, witch covens, and cults.
Although there is no season 14 on the cards for AHS, Schrier has left the door open for the creator to return with new concepts. "It's a franchise that, by design, can always be rebooted. And so when Ryan has an idea that is great and can figure...

American Horror Story might need to find an entirely new cast when it returns for Season 13 — whenever that is. The show has enlisted many actors since its beginning, bringing back many of them for subsequent installments. Patti Lupone appeared in two seasons of the anthology series, her latest being American Horror Story: NYC. However, it doesn't seem like she's interested in screaming her lungs out in another season. "Yeah, I don't think so," the Agatha All Along star told Gold Derby when asked if she would consider returning for an all-star Season 13 that has been rumored to be in development. Ryan Murphy has expressed interest in bringing the old gang together. "I think he was probably talking about the guys," Lupone said, laughing.

Long Day’s Journey into Night unfolds within a single April day in 1912, as the Tyrone family convenes in their Connecticut seaside retreat. Morning light filters through lace curtains (ghostly in its delicacy), hinting at both renewal and decay. Jonathan Kent adapts Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer Prize–winning drama with minimal fanfare: David Lindsay-Abaire’s screenplay preserves the play’s structural integrity while allowing microexpressions to carry seismic emotional weight.
Cinematographer Mark Wolf frames each encounter with a stillness that feels almost surgical, positioning Mary (Jessica Lange), James (Ed Harris), Jamie (Ben Foster) and Edmund (Colin Morgan) in tableaux where silent glances speak volumes. Don’t expect Patti LuPone to return to the American Horror Story universe anytime soon.
In a new interview, the Broadway star seemingly shut down the possibility that she would come back to the FX anthology series for Season 13.
During an interview with Gold Derby, the reporter asked LuPone if she would return to American Horror Story, adding that creator Ryan Murphy wanted “to bring the group back together for Season 13.”
“What group is that, though?” LuPone asked.
The outlet suggested it was the “really, really cool people,” but LuPone didn’t buy it and said, “Yeah, I don’t think so,” adding, “I think he was probably talking about the guys.”
LuPone first appeared in American Horror Story: Coven (Season 3) playing the role of Joan Ramsey. The Agatha All Along actress returned to the horror series in Season 11 for American Horror Story: NYC.

It's well known throughout Hollywood that Bill Murray doesn't have an agent. Back in 2019, Murray spoke with IndieWire about how his home phone used to ring and ring, pestering him with job offers and potential movie roles. He hated hearing from his agent, preferring to answer the phone if it was a friend just calling to chat. He preferred his privacy. Murray was in-demand enough that he could afford to set up a 1-800 number that he would only distribute to a few key filmmakers or casting directors. He understood that there were various studios around Hollywood where some beleaguered interns were commanded to "Get Bill Murray on the phone!" Luckily, those interns had his 1-800 number, which would direct callers to a computerized voice message system. Murray could then check the machine whenever he wanted, picking through demands at random.
This may be why Murray tends to work with the same directors repeatedly.

Gold Derby is celebrating its 25th anniversary with our series of "25 in '25" highlighting the best, worst, and weirdest of the 2000s.
Viewers of The Last of Us are still wiping away their tears after witnessing a the death of Pedro Pascal's Joel during the April 20 episode. Might all of the extra buzz from that emotional moment help Pascal win an Emmy Award? It's certainly possible. Many performers have won statuettes for their impactful swan songs, and more still have been nominated. With the help of Gold Derby's forum posters, we have compiled a list of 25 performers since 2000 who received Emmy attention after being killed off.

Michael Caton-Jones' historical biography "Rob Roy" had the bad luck of being released on April 7, 2025, only about a month and a half before Mel Gibson's juggernaut "Braveheart." Both films were about notable Scottish rebels, with "Rob Roy" centering on a 16th-century folk hero and "Braveheart" focusing on a 14th-century freedom fighter. As such, audiences couldn't help but compare the two films. "Braveheart" was the larger, more expensive, more violent, and more crowd-pleasing of the two, and it would go on to win five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. "Rob Roy" was kind of swallowed by the Hollywood "Braveheart" hype.
That's a pity, really, seeing as "Rob Roy" is a fantastic film unto itself. Liam Neeson stars in the movie as Rob Roy MacGregor, a put-upon Scottish clan leader who has to borrow some money to establish himself as a powerful cattle trader and feed his people.

There aren’t many things that Clint Eastwood cannot do. ‘The Man with No Name’ could shoot the rope flawlessly multiple times to save Tuco. ‘Harry Callahan,’ on the other hand, once hijacked a school bus in something as stifling as a suit and tie combo. Yet, when The Bridges of Madison County premiered in 1995, few expected cinema’s ultimate tough guy to break character and become its most surprising romantic hero.
Well, Eastwood’s emotional range in the movie would do much more than just stun the critics post-release. It was a risk that paid off with a global box office of $182 million against a $22 million budget, plus an Oscar nomination for his co-star Meryl Streep. But what’s even more surprising? According to Streep, The Bridges of Madison County made Steven Spielberg weep “for 40 minutes” straight. Now, that’s no ordinary feat.

Six years ago, Michelle Williams won the Best Limited/Movie Actress Emmy for her role as actress-dancer Gwen Verdon in FX's Fosse/Verdon (2019). Now, Williams could become the 15th actress to win at least two Emmys in this specific category, thanks to her role on FX's Dying for Sex.
Williams plays Molly Kochan, a terminal cancer patient whose tragic, often funny, and wild sexual journey is at the heart of the story. Kochan’s podcast, cohosted with her friend Nikki Boyer, serves as the foundation for the series, which dives deeply into themes of sex, desire, friendship, and death.
The last person to win double Emmys in Best Limited/Movie Actress was Kate Winslet for Mildred Pierce (2011) and Mare of Easttown (2021). It took her 10 years to claim the bookend trophy, while Williams could accomplish the feat in just six years. Should Williams prevail, both actresses would also be undefeated in this race.

Variety reports that Morten Tyldum has been tapped to direct the pilot for Apple’s upcoming Cape Fear series and executive produce. Additionally, the great Cch Pounder has joined the cast, which includes Javier Bardem, Amy Adams, and Patrick Wilson.
Based on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners, Cape Fear “will follow what unfolds after killer Max Cady (Bardem) is released from prison and seeks out the Bowdens, whom he blames for his sentence.” The 10-episode series has been described as a tense, Hitchcockian thriller that will examine America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century. It’s not known who Pounder will play in the series, but she’s always a very welcome addition to any project.

There’s at least one more season of American Horror Story on the horizon and details about the upcoming Season 13 are starting to come in.
It’s difficult for any television series to sustain itself for a dozen seasons, but American Horror Story has experienced a particularly fascinating trajectory that’s often more chaotic than it is creative. Regardless of one’s opinion on American Horror Story – its current state or the series in general – there’s no denying that it ushered in a new wave of anthology storytelling that’s still popular a decade later. There’s been an increasingly blasé approach to American Horror Story seasons that it’s sometimes easy to forget about the tremendous pomp and circumstance that surrounded the early seasons and how each year’s theme would be teased and revealed like a major event. Did You Know Meryl Streep Was Unfazed While Filming With A Huge Bug In Her Dress? ( Photo Credit – Facebook )
Meryl Streep had a bug in her dress. A huge one. And she powered through an entire scene without breaking character. On the set of Out of Africa, Streep delivered a flawless take while an “enormous insect” crawled around inside her costume. Screenwriter Kurt Luedtke recalled (via Cheatsheet), “But the instant Sydney said ‘Cut!’ her face contorted, and she smashes her fist against her chest and yelled, ‘Get me this thing out of here!'”
The costume team rushed in, tore open her dress, and out fell the massive intruder. Luedtke continued: “The costume person tore open her dress, and out fell an enormous insect! It had been crawling around in there all through the scene, but she had forced herself to ignore it.” The moment stunned the crew.

The Conjuring and Aquaman star Patrick Wilson's psychological thriller, A kind of Murder, will soon hit Max. The underrated murder mystery movie, which stars The Sinner and Blade: Trinity's Jessica Biel opposite Wilson, debuted in 2016 to less-than-stellar reviews from critics.
Audiences will have another chance to re-experience and re-evaluate A Kind of Murder when it arrives on Max on April 1. Directed by Andy Goddard from a screenplay by Susan Boyd, the film adapts Patricia Highsmith's 1954 novel The Blunderer. Wilson plays Walter Stackhouse, an architect and aspiring writer of short-story crime fiction, fascinated by the recent murder of the spouse of local bookstore owner Marty Kimmel. Biel portrays Walter's wife Clara Stackhouse, who apparently commits suicide not far from the restaurant parking lot where Kimmel's wife was murdered. A police investigation led by Detective Lawrence Corby ensues, as both husbands are suspected of being involved in the deaths of both women.

If you were alive and paying attention in the early 2000s, chances are you remember Tim Burton’s Big Fish. Or maybe you don’t. That’s kind of the problem. Here we are, over twenty years later, and Big Fish remains a cinematic anomaly—loved by those who saw it but often forgotten in broader conversations about Burton’s filmography. How did one of the director’s most ambitious, heartfelt, and visually stunning films fade into relative obscurity? And why does it deserve to be remembered as his second-best film, right behind Ed Wood? Let’s dive into this weird, wonderful, and sadly overlooked masterpiece to figure out just what the fuck happened to Big Fish.

The entirety of the film takes place at the Tyrone house, following these four characters over the course of a single day. At breakfast they seem the picture of a happy family, yet the camera keeps finding little signs that something isn’t right. Often it will...
