Cal review – grieving Helen Mirren superb in compassionate Troubles romance
John Lynch
Mirren won best actress at Cannes in 1984 for her role as Marcella, who forms a relationship with John Lynch’s Cal – a man complicit in her husband’s murder

Pat O’Connor’s Northern Irish movie from 1984, adapted by author Bernard MacLaverty from his own novel, holds up very well for its rerelease; better in fact than most of the movies and TV drama made about and during the Troubles. It has an unhurried, thoughtful and very human quality; Helen Mirren won the best actress award at Cannes for her performance here and in fact it is very well acted across the board by a blue-chip cast.

Mirren plays Marcella, a woman from a Catholic background, married across the sectarian divide to a reserve police officer murdered at his parents’ farmhouse by an Ira man who had bullied a bewildered local guy into being his getaway driver; this is Cal, played...

‘Sew Torn’ Exclusive Featurette Gets Twisty Ahead of National Sewing Machine Day Release on VOD

Sew Torn will be available on VOD starting this Friday, June 13 and you can pre-order now.

Pairing with the digital release news is a special making of featurette, which we’re exclusively unveiling below. It gives a closer look at the almost Rube Goldberg levels of thread-weaving that aids the seamstress in her crime exploits.

The film follows Barbara Duggen (played by Connolly), ‘The Mobile Seamstress’, who is struggling to keep her fabric shop alive. After a botched sewing appointment sets her on a quest to replace her client’s lost button, she unexpectedly stumbles...

‘Sew Torn’ Review – An Inventive Crime Thriller with a Whimsical Sense of Humor
Image
A struggling seamstress comes upon a drug deal gone awry in Sew Torn, the feature debut by writer-director Freddy Macdonald, kickstarting a narrative structure that borrows liberally from Tom Tykwer’s propulsive Run Lola Run. The seamstress weighs her options, opening up three different story paths and outcomes. Macdonald nestles Run Lola Run’s loop-like structure inside a cozy crime thriller, the type that’s more intimate and self-contained in scale and comes heavily armed with a sense of whimsy. That it’s all stitched together by an almost preternaturally gifted seamstress makes for a visually arresting and charming debut, if a bit subdued.

“Choices, choices, choices,” Sew Torn‘s seamstress Barbara (Eve Connolly) says in the opening voiceover narration. She has no idea that she’s distilled the plot so simply; the events that follow will lay daunting choices at her feet, though she doesn’t know it yet.

Bernadette Banner in Bernadette Banner Channel (2019)
Sew Torn review – seamstress thriller turns into Run Lola Run-style alternative-reality caper
Bernadette Banner in Bernadette Banner Channel (2019)
A sewing supply shopowner who stumbles upon a drug deal gone wrong is faced with three choices – commit the perfect crime, call the police, or run away

Thread-slingers with an addiction to YouTube tutorials (like me) may have seen an amusing film by seamstress/historian Bernadette Banner in which she reacts to a bunch of films that feature actors sewing, or at least pretending to sew. Examples include How the Grinch Stole Christmas (not convincing) to The Phantom Thread. Each one is picked apart with waspish scrutiny by Banner, who can spot the difference between a vintage treadle-operated chain stitch machine and a lockstitch machine from different periods in the 19th-century. Hopefully Banner will get a chance to scrutinise this loosely sewing-themed thriller and nitpick its faux pas, such as the bit where the seamstress protagonist Barbara (Eve Connolly) seems to sew a button on a client’s wedding dress in less than a minute.

Image
Vampire horror is a genre full of expectations and conventions, but several amazing vampire films and TV shows from the 2020s have started to turn the genre on its head. This is in part due to several incredible vampire acting performances, but also groundbreaking writing and design. These stories have begun to chart new paths for the vampire genre, taking a monster well-known by many and putting vampire characters into fresh situations.

The 2020s aren't the only years full of great vampire media, making great changes to a long-beloved genre. The 2000s were full of underrated vampire classics, but the biggest changes seem to have come in more recent years. These changes are most evident in the stories being told, as most vampire media in the past have either portrayed them as static monsters or romantic leads.

This Is the Zodiac Speaking (2024)

This Is the Zodiac Speaking (2024)
“This is the Zodiac Speaking” (2024) docuseries explores the most famous “unsolved” serial killer case in history. The Zodiac killer was notorious for having murdered five victims in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s. He would send in messages as ciphers to regional newspapers, where he would threaten with a murder spree or bombings if they wouldn’t be printed. To this day, The Zodiac Killer case remains an open investigation, with at least two of the ciphers still remaining unsolved and the latest cipher to be decoded was as late as 2020.

This is the Zodiac Speaking (2024) Docuseries Plot Summary: Who was the Zodiac Killer?

The nom-de-guerre was used by an unidentified serial killer who struck his spree of murders in the late 1960s—specifically from December 1968 to October 1969. The identified and known attacks took place in Solano County, California, specifically in the cities of Benicia and Vallejo,...

Hardware (1990) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Sometimes a movie can be a best horror movie you never saw candidate but there are other instances where a movie has been seen and talked about but altogether lost to time. Richard Stanley has had a long career in terms of time he has been active but a very small amount of output in terms of actual number of projects. While the saga of his journey to direct the big budget remake of The Island of Doctor Moreau and subsequent firing has been widely captured in the documentary Lost Soul and his latest success with The Color Out of Space was highly regarded but tinged with controversial allegations, he had a couple of gems before all that. Dust Devil, his sophomore effort, still very much so belongs in the Best Horror You Never Saw category and I will get to that one too, but Hardware (pick up a copy...

The Watchers Cast & Character Guide
Image
The supernatural horror film The Watchers spends a ton of screentime with a small group of individuals trapped in a mysterious and dangerous forest, so the talented cast is understandably small. The Watchers is the feature film directorial debut of Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of the iconic director M. Night Shyamalan. The movie follows a young American immigrant in Ireland, Mina, who becomes trapped with others in a forest that is home to nocturnal creatures known as Watchers, whose appearance remains a mystery to anyone who hasn't encountered them.

Mina and her fellow survivors remain trapped in a concrete bunker at night, which keeps them safe from the creatures, but also allows the creatures to observe their activities and behavior. The Watchers is heavy on dread and atmosphere-building, and as is expected, includes a trademark "Shyamalan twist", although it is based on the novel of the same name by A.M. Shine.

Disney Will Demolish Rivers of America and Tom Saywer Island For Cars Area
Image
Disney just announced that they would bulldoze Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island to add more IP at the Magic Kingdom. Frontierland will no longer be Frontierland; it will be Western IP land. Of course, the Disney suits waited until after D23 to confirm this when they could hide from parks fans.

Parks fans are already upset that Disney will keep calling the area Frontierland when it’s modern-day “Cars.” It defeats the purpose, like Autotopia in Tomorrowland.

Couldn’t they have just made that Cars-themed? But I digress.

The new concept art shows the changes, and the Disney Parks Blog says the area will be removed.

“It’s time to leave Radiator Springs and head west into exciting new locations. To make way for this completely new frontier, the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will be transformed into vast and rugged terrains for a rally race...

‘Sew Torn’ Review: A Stitch in Time Saves None in This Loopy Crime Comedy
Image
Several alternate realities, none of them remotely acquainted with ours, exist side-by-side in “Sew Torn,” a high-concept crime farce that pits guns against haberdashery, innocence against culpability, and genre grit against fruit-loop fantasy. Even as it nakedly steals its structural conceit from Tom Tykwer’s Nineties trendsetter “Run Lola Run” — a film made before 24-year-old writer-director-editor Freddy Macdonald was born — this is a debut feature strange and singular enough to attract its own keen following, with its blend of folksy small-town hijinks, nasty neo-noir tension and literally crafty comedy, centered around a heroine who calls to mind MacGyver with a pocket sewing kit. Some will thrill to the film’s silliness, others may find it a joke stretched beyond elasticity, but it’ll have many putting a pin in Macdonald’s name.

Eye-catching if hardly substantial, “Sew Torn” is quite obviously expanded from Macdonald’s 2019 short of the same title:...

10 Best British Movies That Don't Take Place in London
Image
Generally, if a movie is set in England, it will take place in the capital city of London. London is home to 8,000,000 people and houses most of the well-known UK landmarks: Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, the Shard, and so on. It's not surprising that it's such a popular location for filmmakers.

However, Britain is much bigger than London alone, and movies that come out of the country reflect this. While big blockbuster movies tend to stick to London, other areas of Britain have more personal and intricate stories told about them. They have the added effect of teaching people about lesser-known areas of the United Kingdom.

The Watchers 2 Prospects Get Uncertain Response From Director Ishana Night Shyamalan
Image
Ishana Night Shyamalan reflects on the potential sequel to The Watchers, expressing interest in genre exploration, though admitting it's too early to consider it. Reviews for the horror-thriller, which marks Shyamalan's directorial debut, have been generally negative, particularly for its convoluted storytelling and lackluster ending. In spite of her uncertainty and the reviews, the ending does leave enough room for a sequel, and should the first movie become a box office hit, The Watchers 2 could find its way to being greenlit.

With her directorial debut now in theaters, Ishana Night Shyamalan shares her thoughts on The Watchers 2. Based on A.M. Shine's novel of the same name, the horror-thriller tells the story of Mina, a 28-year-old American artist who finds herself trapped in an expansive forest in western Ireland and surrounded by the titular mysterious creatures. Dakota Fanning leads the ensemble Watchers cast that also includes Georgina Campbell, Oliver Finnegan,...

Blue Lights Series 1 Recap: Tina McIntyre, Happy, Jen, Grace, Stevie
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for the Blue Lights series one finale.

When Blue Lights arrived in 2023, it felt like counter-programming to the news headlines. Real life was filled with reports of police corruption, brutality and deadly crimes committed under cover of the uniform, and here was this drama, offering an alternative.

Grace, Tommy and Annie were that alternative. New recruits to the Police Service of Northern Ireland, they weren’t in uniform to abuse power or take greasy backhanders, they were there to help, and they had the courage of their convictions.

That isn’t to say their courage and convictions weren’t sorely tested by the reality of the job. As they discovered, policing a community riven by historical conflict is tough enough without MI5 doing deals with local kingpins that keep the drugs and crime flowing. Not to mention anonymous death threats and the violent loss of beloved colleagues.

‘Sew Torn’ Review: Freddy Macdonald’s Strange, Striking Neo-Noir Is A Great Discovery – SXSW
Image
“Choices, choices…,” says the narrator, a young seamstress, in this strange and striking debut from Freddy Macdonald. A neo-noir in the early Coens tradition, Sew Torn also features a bold tri-part structure in which the heroine, Barbara (Eve Connolly) — like Lola before her in Tom Tykwer’s Run Lola Run — gets three standalone chances to pursue a different destiny after stumbling on the bloody aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong on a quiet country road.

It begins with image of a reel of red cotton, a briefcase and a dead body. This is Barbara, who wonders what we’ll make of her story. Macdonald’s film then loops back to explain who Barbara got here, a tale of chance and coincidence that reshuffles its characters in a way that always surprises,...

Laura Fernández Espeso announced projects such as including season 3 of thriller drama The Head and a project with British director Mike Leigh in post-production, but also revealed plans in the English-language U.S. market and talked up growth opportunities.

“For the American market, we’re going to be focused on books, library acquisitions and finished content because we are receiving a lot if proposals that are super high quality,” she said. “Our rights team are open be part of those projects, and they are going to help us to diversify.”

The Mediapro Studio Heads to the Sahara for ‘The Head’ Season 3 as CEO Laura Fernandez Espeso Pinpoints Growth Strategies at Mipcom Keynote (Exclusive)
Image
The Mediapro Studio will shoot from November Season 3 of “The Head,” its biggest international hit, filming in the Sahara Desert with John Lynch (“The Fall”) and Katharine O’Donnelly (“Mary Queen of Scots), attached once more to star.

Olivia Morris also returns to her role as Rachel Russo, the morally conscionable daughter of ambition-crazed biologist Arthur Wilde, played by Lynch.

“The Head” Season 1 took place at an Antarctic research station cut off in winter, Season 2 on a hulking freighter at mid-Pacific’s Point Nemo, the most distant place on earth from nearest land.

“The locations for this series have been a fundamental part of the show itself, always in an inaccessible place,” Laura Fernández Espeso, The Mediapro Studio CEO, told Variety before talking at a Mipcom Media Mastermind Keynote on Tuesday.

“This time we’ll be shooting in the desert: ‘The Head 3’ will take place in an unknown place in the Sahara desert,...

Earlier this year, a Volume Global soundstage supported by air columns opened at Lionsgate Studios Yonkers, a new facility just outside New York City that was developed by Robert Halmi’s Great Point Studios. Halmi said Volume Global’s designs would “significantly enhance our production capabilities and expand our overall studio presence.”

John Lynch, the former head of global production at Amazon Studios and Paramount+ TV and a member of Volume Global’s board of advisors said the company’s pop-up stages use “leading-edge” technology. They give content producers “an expedited solution to their production space constraints, with a remarkable turnaround time of just 120 days.”

The newest space is designed to...

Tom Cruise Almost Made a Sleeper Movie - Which Was a Right Fit for Him
Image
Superhero movies have become all the rage in the past few decades, and much like comic books themselves, they've dominated the conversation of "comic book adaptations." Even within shared superhero universes, however, so comics go for different tones, scopes and genres. Such was the case with Wildstorm's Sleeper, which almost had a movie adaptation starring one of Hollywood's greatest stars.

Tom Cruise has been associated with several iconic movies and roles, though superhero films have always managed to escape him. This was nearly changed, however, with a planned film for a comic book series that spun off from Jim Lee's Wildcats book. Sadly, this movie never came to be, even though it would have been right up the actor's espionage and action-oriented alley.

Tiff Review: ‘Kissing Candice’ Oozes Sexuality and Dark Glamour
With a first scene as stylish as that from Kissing Candice, the words “music video chic” come to mind before you can even discover writer/director Aoife McArdle is a James Vincent McMorrow regular who also released a short in collaboration with U2’s 2014 release Songs of Innocence. Between the oppressive reds and aural manipulation (I thought the volume wasn’t working until the score finally kicks in to augment the titular kiss), you can’t help admiring the sensory craftsmanship onscreen despite having no contextual basis for anything occurring. What begins as a romantic interlude shared between Candice (Ann Skelly) and Jacob (Ryan Lincoln) soon shifts to the latter randomly and silently strolling down the street (through fire) until finally arriving at a bar where the former is inexplicably waiting.

It’s a wild ride oozing sexuality and dark glamour, the weird series of events on display an obvious...

New Official Us Trailer for Action Film 'Pilgrimage' with Jon Bernthal
"A powerful man does not become so without sin." Rlj Entertainment has unveiled a second trailer for the indie action thriller Pilgrimage, set in Ireland during the 13th century. The story follows a group of monks who must escort a sacred relic across the "Irish landscape fraught with peril". Starring Richard Armitage, Tom Holland, John Lynch, Stanley Weber, Lochlann O'Mearáin, Hugh O'Conor, Eric Godon, plus the badass Jon Bernthal as a character named "The Mute". We already posted the first official trailer for this earlier in the year, but I'm glad to see another one reminding us that this is finally coming out soon. They're obviously playing up Tom Holland from Spider-Man: Homecoming, but the entire cast looks great. Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for Brendan Muldowney's Pilgrimage, direct from YouTube: You can still watch the first official trailer for Pilgrimage here, to see even more footage from this film.

First Trailer for Action Film 'Pilgrimage' with Jon Bernthal as 'The Mute'
"You will see the safe delivery of our holiest relic to Rome. Go with God." Rlj Entertainment has debuted a trailer for an indie action thriller titled Pilgrimage, set in the religious times of 13th century Ireland. The film is about to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this month, hence the release of the trailer to build extra buzz. The story follows a group of monks who must escort a sacred relic across the "Irish landscape fraught with peril". There's plenty of gnarly violence in this. Starring Richard Armitage, Tom Holland, John Lynch, Stanley Weber, Lochlann O'Mearáin, Hugh O'Conor, Eric Godon, plus the badass Jon Bernthal as a character named "The Mute". This actually looks pretty cool, consider me interested. Here's the first official trailer for Brendan Muldowney's Pilgrimage, originally from Yahoo: A small band of Catholic monks keep to a solemn routine on a remote Irish coast.

Glasgow Frightfest 2017: Chris Smith Interview
Ahead of the UK premiere of his latest film Detour at Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow, Chris Smith tells us the importance of FrightFest, his love of ‘film Noir’ and his hatred of reality TV…

FrightFest has premiered all your genre movies Creep, Severance, Triangle, Black Death, except Get Santa obviously. Is this positioning an important part of the rollout process for you?

Firstly let me apologise for being away for so long and thank you for having me back. I wrote Get Santa because I’d just had a son and was feeling like I wanted to do something that he could watch in the next 15 years. I expected the film to take a year to come together but it ended up taking four years. My son was by that time old enough to come to the premiere with a few of his class mates.

Back to the question, Frightfest is extremely important,...

Neo-Noir ‘Detour’ Starring Tye Sheridan, Bel Powley And Emory Cohen Underwhelms [Review]
If any one of the ’90s Quentin Tarantino copycats remade “Sliding Doors,” this neo-noir would be the result, even down to the casting of John Lynch, who starred in the 1998 film. Filled with would-be-witty dialogue, “Detour” takes a Choose Your Own Adventure approach to its twist-filled narrative about a college student whose attempts for revenge go very wrong. Director Christopher Smith employs split screen to show what happens when his hero makes a decision and flips back in time when it wants to show the audience just how little they know.

Watch: Tye Sheridan & Bel Powley in Trailer for Crime Thriller 'Detour'
"Don't regret the things you do, just the things you don't." Magnet Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for a gritty crime thriller titled Detour, a neo-noir from filmmaker Christopher Smith (of Creep, Triangle, Black Death). The fantastic young cast in this is lead by Tye Sheridan (seen in Mud, X-Men: Apocalypse), Emory Cohen (seen in Brooklyn, The Place Beyond the Pines) and Bel Powley (seen in The Diary of a Teenage Girl). The film involves Sheridan playing a young law student named Harper, who meets a grifter and his companion who get him into all kinds of trouble. Also featuring Stephen Moyer, John Lynch, Jared Abrahamson and Gbenga Akinnagbe. The most interesting aspect is the split-screen narrative, which seems like a unique twist but you'll have to see the film to find out how exactly it plays into the story. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Christopher Smith's Detour,...

‘The Fall: Series 3’ Teaser Trailer: Gillian Anderson is Haunted By Killer Jamie Dornan
Gillian Anderson
It’s been two years since audiences last saw Gillian Anderson as the driven and obsessive Stella Gibson, the detective superintendent who’s been after serial killer Paul Spector (played by Jamie Dornan) in BBC Two’s drama “The Fall.” A new teaser trailer for the third installment has just been released and shows Gibson being haunted by the murderer who was last shot at the end of Season 2.

“You’re under arrest, you’re going to prison,” we hear Anderson’s voice say as she’s seen swimming, recalling the words that she last spoke to Spector and what he told her.

“I live at a level of intensity unknown to you and others of your type,” we hear him say. “You will never know the almost God-like power that I feel when that last bit of breath leaves a body. That feeling of complete possession.”
