9 Clips to Remind You Why Kristen Johnston Is One of the Greatest Living Comedic Actors
Image
Tomorrow, Netflix is premiering Leanne, a new sitcom. Some will think of this as a vehicle for stand-up comic Leanne Morgan, which is fair: It is her name in the title, she’s credited as a co-creator and the show revolves around her character, also named Leanne, navigating a midlife split from her longtime husband Bill (Ryan Stiles). Some will categorize it among the many multicam sitcoms for which its co-creator, Chuck Lorre, is known, including Two and A Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and Dharma & Greg. But discerning viewers will have marked “New Kristen Johnston show” on their calendars as soon as Morgan, during her guest co-host stint, threw to a preview clip on Today’s fourth hour.

For any who doubt whether Johnston should always be considered a headliner — including in Leanne, where Johnston’s character Carol is undeniably the sidekick to her sister, the show...

Independence Day (1996) – What Happened to This Sci-Fi Action Movie?
Image
It seems very long ago, but there was a time when Roland Emmerich wasn’t a household name. The name is synonymous with the destruction of Earth now, and always will be, but go back a few decades and he was just another working director who made mid-budget movies that most people don’t feel very passionately about. Making Contact? Moon 44? Okay, we’ll give some love to 1992’s Universal Soldier only because it still sorta rocks, but I bet when you first saw it you didn’t think much about who made it. Same for the 1994 sci-fi flick Stargate, a title most of us still probably associate with the TV spinoffs than the actual movie. So during the beginning of 1996, when the movie of the summer looked to be an epic alien invasion spectacle called Independence Day, the legion of us who were excited were thinking, “This looks awesome…...

‘Yellowstone’ Star Kevin Costner’s Best Picture-Winning 87% Rotten Tomatoes Western Directorial Debut Has a New Streaming Home
Image
Before Kevin Costner ruled the ranch on Yellowstone, he was already leaving a permanent mark on the Western genre. Now, his legendary directorial debut Dances with Wolves — the film that earned him Oscar gold and reignited interest in frontier storytelling — has found a new home on HBO Max from July 1, and it’s climbing back into streaming relevance just as Costner returns to the genre with Horizon: An American Saga. With a fresh wave of interest in all things Costner, Dances with Wolves is being rediscovered by new audiences. The 1990 epic remains one of the most ambitious Western movies ever made. It's a three-hour odyssey of learning about other cultures, reckonings with morals, and sweeping landscapes, led by a brilliant performance from Costner himself.

Costner stars as John J. Dunbar, a Union Army lieutenant who requests a remote post in the American frontier following a brush with death on the battlefield.

Broke Interview: Wyatt Russell and Dennis Quaid discuss surviving extreme weather, bucking broncs, and each other
Wyatt Russell
Bareback bronc riding is one of the most dangerous and physically crippling sports ever conceived. It takes a special kind of person to put themselves in harm’s way as unpredictable beasts leap, kick, and trample around an arena, their only goal being to shed foreign weight from their massive bodies. In Carlyle Eubank’s Broke, True Brandywine (Wyatt Russell), he is a bareback bronc rider pushed beyond his limits as his eroding career, failing health, and shattered relationships haunt his quest to survive a battle with the elements.

Leading up to the release of Broke, we sat down with Wyatt Russell (who’s currently lighting up the screen as U.S. Agent in Thunderbolts) and Dennis Quaid to discuss Eubank’s emotional film and all the mental gymnastics required to help make it. During our talk, we talked about the harsh weather conditions Russell endured while shooting a portion of the film,...

Broke Review — Harrowing and Evocative, Wyatt Russell Gives the Best Performance of His Career
Image
I’ll admit, I had low expectations when I began watching the new modern American western, Broke. For one, I wondered if Wyatt Russell, a familiar face from Marvel, had the stamina to carry a film like this, especially since he’s in every physically and emotionally rugged scene.

I soon discovered that my preconceived notions were wrong—dead wrong. Broke is a thoughtful, even lyrical, suspenseful, and deeply moving film. Anchored by a performance from Russell that proves he can do more than play a depressed, overstimulated superhero or rely on simple, charming charisma, Russell’s turn sneaks up on you with profound effects.

The story of Broke follows True Brandywine, a bareback—yes, you read that right—bronc rider. True goes full Dominic Toretto mode, feeling most alive in those few seconds in the great mountain West taming a wild mustang rather than building a traditional life for himself.

Thunderbolts* fever is still running high, and now we have the U.S. Agent himself, Wyatt Russell, taking on Broke as True Brandywine, where he’ll be clinging to his fading rodeo career. The first trailer of the contemporary western is now out, and the film is all set for a digital release on May 6, 2025.

Russell’s first appearance in the trailer shows him nearly frostbitten in the snow — a visual strongly reminiscent of Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant. The scene then cuts back to him as a bareback bronc rider, grinding it out in his hometown. The movie is helmed and written by Carlyle Eubank (Muzzle) and the cast ensemble includes but isn’t limited to Auden Thornton, Mary McDonnell with Tom Skerritt andDennis Quaid, in addition to Russell. Every Season Of Battlestar Galactica, Ranked
Image
The reimagined "Battlestar Galactica" is one of the greatest and most ambitious science-fiction television shows ever aired. When "Galactica" begins, humanity is living on 12 colony planets named in tribute to the signs of the Zodiac: Caprica, Tauron, etc. About 50 years ago, mankind created robotic servants called the Cylons, who rebelled and waged war until an armistice.

When the series begins, the Cylons (who have upgraded into human-like forms) return and wipe out the 12 colonies. The 50,000 or so survivors flee in a spaceship fleet, guarded by a "Battlestar" warship, Galactica. Led by William Adama (Edward James Olmos) and President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell), the survivors search for the fabled 13th colony: Earth.

Co-creators Ronald D. Moore and David Eick rebooted the short-lived 1978 original "Galactica" by taking out the cheese in favor of drama and political resonance. Moore, who broke into TV writing on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," got to air...

Turns out you don’t have to be Irish to be lucky come March. That’s right, repertory cinemas from coast to coast will be raining down four-leaf clovers in the form of cinematic gems like “Matewan,” “The Watermelon Woman,” “The Cable Guy,” and many more. And we know what you’re thinking…you just got through slamming back Oscar film after Oscar film, maybe it’s time to take a little break from the movies. After all, spring’s around the corner — it might be nice to step outside for a bit, breathe in the fresh air.

Well, you’re wrong.

Fresh air is for people who can’t appreciate a random assortment of food scents and possibly carbon dioxide from a leaking soda machine tank. You’re of a different breed and as such, we know there’s no better place for you than the comfy cozy darkness of your local cinema.
