If there is anything that the co-creator of the universally popular Sherlock series should be good at, it's writing a British detective story. Following on from his work on Sherlock and Doctor Who, and following his acting appearances in both Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Mark Gatiss' latest writing project, the cozy crime story Bookish, has already been renewed for a second season.
Recently, it was rumored that filming on said second season would begin this summer, following the airing of Season 1 in mid-July. That now seems all the more likely, following confirmation via Instagram of the recent read-through of the Bookish Season 2 scripts. What's more, the caption on the post seems to confirm a first taste of when the second season will arrive, saying, "Today, we had a read through of the brilliant scripts for Bookish Series 2! Roll on 2026." For those yet to check Bookish out,...

Ncuti Gatwa played the Fifteenth Doctor for a mere two seasons of Doctor Who. Now, he's revealed what he regrets about his time as the titular Time Lord.
While appearing on The One Show, via ScreenRant, he was asked about Doctor Who. Gatwa said he regretted never getting to face off against the Doctor's most iconic enemies. "I never got to fight a Dalek. A Dalek or a Cyberman," he said. "I mean, just the crux of Doctor Who. So, might do that! Might go fight a Dalek!"
Virtually every Doctor has gotten to fight a Dalek or Cyberman or both - the one exception being Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor, who only appeared in the Doctor Who TV movie. However, he did get to fight them in the Big Finish audio adventures.

Ncuti Gatwa has revealed one of his biggest regrets from his time as the Fifteenth Doctor on Doctor Who. When Doctor Who returned in 2023 following the 60th anniversary specials, it seemed like the start of a new era: Disney's co-production gave the show a previously unheard-of budget, and Ncuti Gatwa's casting was undeniably historic, injecting the show with a fresh, frenetic energy.
With former showrunner Russell T. Davies back at the helm, there was nothing the new Doctor seemingly couldn't accomplish, except, as it turns out, fight Doctor Who's most iconic villains. During an interview on the UK program The One Show (via RadioTimes.com), Gatwa revealed his biggest regret about his two-season stint as the Doctor:

Fans hoping for another trip to the Mind Palace, or Baker Street, on Sherlock may want to look elsewhere — co-creator and actor Mark Gatiss has officially closed the door on any future revival or recasting of the iconic BBC series. His answer was clear, heartfelt, and final. Brace yourselves, folks.

Will Doctor Who return after the shocking cliffhanger conclusion of this season? That's the question on every Whovian's lips, and now showrunner Russell T. Davies, who resurrected the show after a sixteen-year hiatus in the 2000s, has stated that "we don't know what's happening yet." Davies made the statement in a production diary in Doctor Who Magazine, as reported by Deadline. The uncertainty comes with the end of the show's production deal with Disney+ and declining ratings for the recent seasons of the series.
In a production diary for the season finale published in Doctor Who Magazine, Davies wrote, "We don’t know what’s happening yet, and while everyone works that out, I’ll take a pause on this page … Hopefully, we’ll have news soon." A BBC source clarified, "This letter is a production notes diary for when the show is in production, or on air, and as...

As part of an essay cycle that roves the cinema of the 1990s for vestiges of intelligent life, Phillip Lopate identifies several attributes that typify the early style of writer turned directors: creatively interpolated exposition, admirably ham-fisted mise-en-scène, and skewedly erudite characters among them. The blistering dyad of movies that British author Bruce Robinson produced with HandMade Films in the late ’80s proudly manifests all of these, and adds one by way of aggressive underscoring: an acerbic worldview.
One can’t blame Lopate for overlooking this quality, as there’s nothing in the debuts of David Mamet or Paul Schrader on par with Robinson’s reckless piss and vinegar. House of Games and Blue Collar possess a crafty bleakness, to be sure, but a modern fable wherein the body of an advertising exec is commandeered by a sentient, puss-dribbling shoulder boil suggests unprecedented vocational spite. As with both Mamet and Schrader,...

"Doctor Who" has a famously complicated release history. From its 1960s beginnings to the 2005 revival and the fun, cheesy, and heartfelt Disney+ "Doctor Who" era that kicked off in 2024, the franchise can seem extremely complex even without taking the Doctor's famous reincarnations into account. It gets to a point where even a simple "Doctor Who" beginner's guide on where to begin watching the long-running sci-fi classic now needs to offer multiple starting point options.
One of the British sci-fi gem's most notorious aspects is the 15-year hiatus the show took after Sylvester McCoy's exit. McCoy's seventh Doctor ended his tenure in December 1989, and the show didn't return until Christopher Eccleston's ninth Doctor took over in 2005. However, "Doctor Who" wasn't entirely absent in live-action during these years. In 1996, Paul McGann portrayed the eighth Doctor in the made-for-tv "Doctor Who: The Movie," clashing wits with an Eric Roberts incarnation of his mortal enemy,...

When a series has been on the airwaves for decades, it can almost seem daunting for new viewers to find a comfortable place to hop aboard. Thankfully, "Doctor Who" has mostly been pretty good about that, whether it be the introduction of a new actor playing the Doctor, the arrival of a different companion, or both.
When the beloved British sci-fi series returned to the airwaves in 2005, it had been 15 years since Sylvester McCoy's last season, and about a decade since Paul McGann starred in "Doctor Who: The Movie." Within the first episode of Christopher Eccleston's tenure, a whole new generation was not only introduced to the Doctor, but also their new traveling companion: Rose Tyler (Billie Piper). As the 19 year-old working class girl gets swept up in the Doctor's sense of adventure throughout time and space, so do we, with Rose serving as an audience surrogate of sorts.

Exclusive: Mark Gatiss is suitably on-trend with Bookish. He created and stars in the upcoming series as Gabriel Book, an eccentric bookshop owner and expert sleuth who helps the police solve tricky cases. The show has contained stories – one crime plays out over two episodes – and there are lighthearted elements and something comforting about the cluttered antiquarian bookshop, situated in a picture-perfect historic London lane. Two struggling actors living in far from perfect conditions in late 1960s London isn't that far from the truth for countless dreamers. 1987'sWithnail and I, directed by Bruce Robinson, gained cult status through its observant wit and darkly comical portrayal of the '60s countercultural movement winding down. Despite its initial modest success, the film grew in stature by word of mouth, in part through movie fans hosting viewing parties and quoting memorable dialogue.
Although the humor is distinctly British, the themes are universal, finely balancing comedy and melancholy. Director Bruce Robinson used his lived experience as a luckless actor in London to frame the film, and the chemistry between the leads, the great Richard E Grant and Paul MacGann, makes their dysfunctional companionship feel lived-in and real. Henry Cavill has been fan-casted for iconic roles, some already fulfilled. The leaked audition tape offered a glimpse of what could have been if he was the fifth James Bond.
Director Martin Campbell said Henry Cavill's James Bond audition tape was "kind of" made for GoldenEye, not Casino Royale. That needs to be clarified because Cavill was 12 years old when GoldenEye came out. Alien and Aliens confirmed a franchise was building, but that momentum was dashed by a divisive third film. Director David Fincher explained how Alien 3 made him the avant-garde filmmaker he is today.
Alien 3 has its cult following, but the film is largely panned as a disappointing sequel in the series. David Fincher was reserved when speaking about his experience directing that film, but he confirmed reports the project was doomed from the beginning. Speaking to Variety, Fincher said Alien 3 was a lesson he wouldn't forget. That film went off the rails under his watch, and he vowed not to make the same mistake again. "I look at it this way. On Alien 3, I stopped after that movie looking for permission and I would much rather ask for forgiveness," he said. "So that became my edict. And Se7en, on the page, could have gone a lot of different ways.

David Fincher said he met with Warner Bros. to hash out ideas for the Harry Potter films. His pitch was far from the coming-of-age drama the studio wanted.
David Fincher would have added a Harry Potter to his eclectic filmography if Warner Bros. hired him. Speaking to Variety, the Gone Girl director said he had a very distinct concept for his Harry Potter film. "I was asked to come in and talk to them about how I would do Harry Potter," he confirmed. "I remember saying, 'I just don't want to do the clean Hollywood version of it. I want to do something that looks a lot more like Withnail and I, and I want it to be kind of creepy.'" A cult classic, Withnail and I is largely considered one of the all-time best British films.

Harry Potter is one of the most beloved fantasy film franchises of all time. Fans travel the globe to visit the Harry Potter Studio Tour in London, or to get their own wand from Ollivanders at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida. Some dedicated fans even visit King's Cross Station in London on what would be the first official day of Hogwarts every year. You may have even been asked what house you're in. But imagine how different the franchise would be if David Fincher got his hands on it. Would Harry open a box with Dumbledore's head in it? Or is Voldemort actually part of Harry Potter's fractured psyche? It's safe to say it would be weird. Well, David Fincher has clued fans in on just how weird his Harry Potter movie could have gotten.

Despite the failure of Doctor Who's 1996 movie, the show's modern era just wouldn't be the same if not for certain contributions from Paul McGann's brief spell leading the franchise as the Eighth Doctor. The show's 2004 revival with Christopher Eccleston marked a strong change in tone when compared with Doctor Who's classic era, despite all existing canon remaining in place. In several ways, McGann's movie falls somewhere between the original run and the version that's around today, but it's certainly more similar to the newer episodes than the older ones.
Of all the actors to play the Doctor, Paul McGann's tenure is among the shortest. The feature-length production in which he starred was a clear attempt to bring the franchise out of dormancy. However, despite McGann's brilliant performance, the movie's divisive script resulted in many fans rejecting it, and Doctor Who didn't come back in any meaningful way for almost another decade.

Doctor Who legend Sylvester McCoy has hinted that past incarnations of The Doctor “may be coming back” to the show. McCoy originally played the Seventh Doctor between 1987 and 1996.
McCoy, and several other classic Doctor Who stars, returned for the spin-off show Tales of the Tardis, which was launched for the franchise’s 60th anniversary. The series used the conceit of the Memory Tardis to bring back past Doctors and companions to reflect on key moments from their journeys together. McCoy featured alongside former co-star Sophie Aldred, who originally played companion Ace, to revisit the 1989 serial “The Curse of Fenric."

The Lonely Assassins stalk the universe once more, as one cosplayer brings Doctor Who's terrifying Weeping Angels into the real world in incredibly painstaking detail. Created by Steven Moffat for season 3's "Blink" in 2007, the Weeping Angels may appear as harmless statues but can move when out of sight, luring unknowing victims into a false sense of security before ending their lives. After having occupied abandoned homes, shipwrecks, and the dark streets of New York, the Weeping Angels made their last appearance in Doctor Who season 13's "Village of the Angels".
While no living statues appeared in Ncuti Gatwa's ongoing Doctor Who era, body painter and artist Melissa Croft has shared her terrifying take on the Lonely Assassins in a new Instagram Reel.

Many Doctor Who actors have had great stories during their runs, but the show let down Colin Baker, Paul McGann, and Jodie Whittaker. For almost six decades, the Doctor has been at the twice-beating heart of the series, and each performer has brought their unique spin to the Time Lord. From William Hartnell’s stern first series Doctor to David Tennant’s energetic Tenth, every actor left an indelible mark on the long history of the show.
However, not all Doctor Who actors were given the material their talent deserves. While the writing elevated some performances, others were trapped in circumstances beyond their control. Whether it was weak scripts, behind-the-scenes challenges, or unresolved story arcs, three stand out as actors who embodied the role of the Doctor brilliantly, yet didn’t get the stories to elevate their enormous potential.

Bad news for fans who use the Hulu streaming service for all their Alien needs— most of the titles in the Ridley Scott-created franchise will be leaving the service in December. Ever since Doctor Who returned to screens in 2005, the show's modern era has largely stuck to a common post-regeneration rule, but Peter Capaldi strayed from this trend when he took on the role of the Twelfth Doctor. As one of two main Doctors to serve under showrunner Steven Moffat, Capaldi debuted as the show's title character in 2013, before making his first full appearance in 2014 and leaving in 2017. Twelve is remembered for his blunt personality and thick Scottish accent, but his legacy also includes a canonical occurrence that hadn't happened since Doctor Who's classic era.
Doctor Who's modern era brought the franchise out of dormancy for the first time since Paul McGann's failed 1996 movie. With the introduction of Ncuti Gatwa as FIfteen in 2023, there have been six main actors to play the part since Doctor Who returned. Since Bram Stoker's foundational novel Dracula, vampires have captivated movie audiences around the world, from masterpieces like Nosferatu to cult classics like Dracula Untold. In the century since the novel's publication, these creatures of the night have become one of the most successful classic monsters of cinema. They're also one of the most versatile creatures of horror and fantasy, something that continues to be shown across a variety of movies.
Vampire movies often touch on themes of loneliness, addiction, seduction, and horror, allowing for a wide variety of genres to serve as the backdrop for some great stories. While far from perfect, the 2000s delivered audiences some excellent takes on vampires, ranging from stylish action movies to terrifying isolated horror. The decade saw some excellent portrayals of classic characters, as well as dynamic, takes on monsters -- and these movies prove it.

Doctor Who's 50th-anniversary special, "The Day of the Doctor," is one of my favorite episodes of the show, and although John Hurt's War Doctor was a surprisingly good addition to the franchise, I'm still certain a new iteration of the Doctor was unnecessary. Of every actor to play the Doctor, Hurt is at the lower end of the list regarding how many times he stepped into the role. Thankfully, he didn't need long to portray a solid and believable version of the famous Time Lord, but I still wanted someone else to play his part.
Even objectively speaking, I think it's hard to argue that "The Day of the Doctor" isn't one of the greatest Doctor Who stories ever. The episode didn't invent the concept of a multi-Doctor story, but it did add something fresh and exciting to the formula by unveiling a previously-unseen regeneration between Paul McGann...

Doctor Who said goodbye to David Tennant for the first time in 2009 when the Tenth Doctor regenerated, but his iconic departure stands apart from that of his predecessors in a way that the show never openly acknowledges. Of all the actors to play the Doctor, Tennant's Tenth arguably experienced the most drawn-out version of the regeneration process. While preparing to change his face, he managed to hold off the ordeal long enough to visit all his old friends one last time. However, there's another reason beyond Ten's emotional farewell tour that makes his regeneration so unique.
Every Doctor Who regeneration sequence comes with consequences, but the main one is that the long-running sci-fi show's lead actor is replaced. The phenomenon has contributed massively to the franchise's 60-year history, as no single actor is required for the story to continue. That being said, there was a time when the Doctor's...

Although Alien 3 remains perhaps the most divisive entry in the Alien movie franchise, one of the film's undoubted strengths is its stellar cast. Alongside series staple Sigourney Weaver, David Fincher's oft-maligned 1992 sequel features the likes of Charles S. Dutton, Pete Postlethwaite, and Lance Henriksen helping to elevate some of the movie's more questionable material. Yet while the final cast remains an imposing collection of acting talent, one casting decision prevented Alien 3 from becoming a reunion for a classic 1987 comedy.

The 1996 Doctor Who TV movie got the Daleks badly wrong, even though they don't appear. The BBC canceled Doctor Who in 1989, but the world's longest-running science-fiction TV show still had so many fans - including those in the industry itself. Philip Segal successfully negotiated a partnership between Fox and the BBC that led to the release of a TV movie in 1996, intended as a backdoor pilot for a relaunch. The Doctor Who TV movie was sadly a failure, but it wasn't due to lack of effort or ambition.
The Doctor Who TV movie featured Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor and Eric Roberts as the newest iteration of the Master. Naturally, though, the Daleks simply had to appear in some capacity - even though negotiating the right to use the Daleks was fiendishly complex. Upon the revival of Doctor Who in 2005, many longtime fans of the franchise were left scratching their heads as to why the series didnt follow the tradition of showing the regeneration from one Doctor to another. This includes Paul McGann, who portrayed the Eighth Doctor in the 1996 made-for-tv film Doctor Who: The Movie, and was unceremoniously left out of the mix when Christopher Ecclestons Ninth Doctor ushered in the modern era of the series.
In an interview with Doctor Who Magazine (via the official website), McGann revealed that when he first heard the rumblings that a new TV show was in the works that would once more bring the iconic franchise back to the small screen following its cancelation in 1989, he was ready and waiting for a phone call to at least make an appearance so that they could film the regeneration between him and Eccleston. Nearly 20 years after the Doctor Who revival, Eighth Doctor actor Paul McGann reflects on not being asked back for the shows 2005 return, despite early speculation that he might reprise his iconic role. McGann's Doctor was initially introduced in the 1996 TV movie and served as the bridge between the classic and modern eras of the iconic sci-fi series. The movie was an attempt to relaunch the series after its cancellation in 1989. However, while McGanns portrayal was generally well-received, the movie did not create enough interest to launch a new TV series.

Carole Ann Ford, the last surviving cast member of the original season of Doctor Who, is hoping to soon return to the long-running series. If it happens, the return would close a gap of six decades since Ford's last appearance on the show as one of its main characters.
In 1963, Ford was featured in the debut Doctor Who season as Susan, the granddaughter of William Hartnell's Doctor. The character has just recently been mentioned in new episodes of Doctor Who featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the newest version of The Doctor, so it wouldn't be a stretch to next include an actual appearance from Ford as Susan. A show like Doctor Who which boasts so much history is always trying to reinvent itself to avoid falling out of relevancy, but there's still one storyline I'm desperate for the long-running sci-fi saga to commit to after several near-misses. Disney's Doctor Who era has the chance to commit to a big plot twist that hasn't yet happened, although the show has made it clear a few times that the plot in question isn't an implausibility. If the show's future follows through on this often-teased arc, it could easily become one of the greatest Doctor Who stories of all time.

The second actor to lead Doctor Who is behind one of the show's silliest tropes, although the gag itself is often wrongly attributed to another Doctor. While every actor to play the Doctor has put their own spin on the character, the fact remains they're all embodying the same persona. As such, there are quite a lot of traits that cross over between Doctors as well as differences that emerge. Earlier Doctors, like Patrick Troughton's Second, helped build a solid foundation on which his successors could stand - even if he isn't correctly credited for all his contributions to the character.
Troughton played the Doctor in some of the greatest Doctor Who stories of all time. His version of the Time Lord was known for being much more lighthearted than his predecessor, as well as his signature unkempt appearance. One of the harsh realities of Doctor Who's classic...

Former Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall shook up the franchise in a major way when he introduced the Timeless Child. This new secret piece of the Doctor's history was first mentioned in the 2018 episode "The Ghost Monument" before being fully explained in 2020's "The Timeless Children." It changed everything fans thought they knew about the Doctor. It was revealed that the Doctor was actually a being of unknown origin, discovered beside a mysterious gateway into another universe or dimension. This surprising and unknown backstory displaced the Doctor's previous origins as a Time Lord, born on Gallifrey. However, this wasn't the first time the Doctor's Time Lord heritage had been challenged on Doctor Who.
In 1996, Doctor Who returned after seven years on hiatus with a television movie, starring Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor. The movie was originally intended to launch a brand-new series of Doctor Who, which McGann would lead.

Filmmaker Ed Zwick, for instance, has been one who didn’t exactly have the most pleasurable venture working with him.

Although the pair only collaborated on one movie, it didn’t go down as one of the best filmmaking adventures for either. The physical altercations for that one project were high enough that this duo may never reunite for another project. But surprisingly enough, Pitt isn’t the only one who might not work with Zwick again, for Julia Roberts seemingly shares the same fate.

Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat recently reflected on helming the iconic sci-fi series, revealing he was "endlessly vilified" during his run. Moffat served as showrunner and head writer from 2010-2017.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, Moffat recalled having so much hatred directed at him by fans for his work on Doctor Who. "The level of hate you get could down three passenger jets. I mean, seriously, it doesn't stop," he said. "I was vilified endlessly. I was a homophobe, misandrist, and a misanthrope, and a sexist and misogynist and a racist. I was against so many people I could only be described as an omni-bigot, which I would suggest means I'm treating everybody equally." Moffat humorously added that any Doctor Who showrunner is essentially "chief Satan of the nation."
