Film Review: Saint Nick of Bethlehem (2024) by Spencer Folmar and Daniel Roebuck
Daniel Roebuck
Based on a true story about Allen Smith’s life, and featuring Hollywood veterans Daniel Roebuck (who also co-directs) and Cathy Moriarty in the protagonist roles, “Saint Nick of Bethlehem” is an effort to present the concept of Santa Claus in a more down to earth, but no less heartwarming approach. Let us see how the filmmakers fared.

Nick’s life is stuck. He cannot get over neither his son’s death, nor his wife leaving him some years before, still spending time in his untouched room and wearing his wedding ring. He also has to take care of his handicapped mother while his work in his brother’s used car dealership is unsatisfying, particularly because Charlie, the owner, seems to mistrust people and is in general a miser with very few positive qualities. Things change, however, when Nick decides to embody the spirit of Santa Claus by making helping others his life goal.

30 Unforgettable Teen Romance Movies From The 90s & 2000s
Image
Stories of young love have always captured the attention of moviegoers and the 1990s and 2000s saw a lot of teen romance movies add to the genre. While not every teen movie from this time period aged well, many of them remain watch-worthy for more than just nostalgia. Whether it is the beautifully executed tropes of friends-to-lovers, enemies-to-lovers, miscommunications, nerds and jocks falling in love, or just some classic teen coming-of-age stories, these remain absolute classics.

Teen romance movies can be comedic high school adventures or dramas that tug at the heartstrings, but they always seem to play out like a modern fairy tale. It's not every day that a teenage outsider learns they're actually royalty or becomes embedded with the most popular kids in school, but teen rom-coms find a way to make the audience believe it. The 1990s and 2000s are two decades notorious for producing some of...

So, Are The Ghostly Trio Really Casper's Uncles?
Image
Casper introduced not only the title Friendly Ghost but also his chaotic uncles, known as the Ghostly Trio, but the relationship between them is a bit confusing. In 1995, Casper got his first live-action movie, directed by Brad Silberling. Casper was created by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo and made his debut in 1945 in a series of theatrical cartoons. The first Casper movie mixed live-action performances with CGI, becoming the first feature movie to have a fully CGI character in the lead role. Although Casper got mixed reviews from critics, it was a commercial success, making way for prequels, sequels, and more.

Casper followed paranormal therapist James Harvey (Bill Pullman) and his teenage daughter, Kat (Christina Ricci), who were hired by Carrigan Crittenden (Cathy Moriarty) to get rid of the ghosts in the mansion she just inherited. Robert De Niro’s Favorite Al Pacino Performance Is The Godfather but Al’s Favorite De Niro Movie Is What Took Us by Surprise

Robert De Niro has been one of Hollywood’s most critically and commercially successful actors. But, when his Heat co-star Al Pacino chose Raging Bull as his favorite De Niro film, the choice surprised most fans.

Al Pacino and the Taxi Driver star have been frequent collaborators and seen together in 4 films yet: The Godfather: Part II, Heat, Righteous Kill, and The Irishman. Martin Scorsese Refused to Make Raging Bull Until He Had a Drug Overdose
Image
Raging Bull almost never made it to the big screen despite Robert De Niro's best efforts. Scorsese was completely disinterested despite having made three previous movies with De Niro, but a life-changing drug overdose would change the director's life (and film schedule). Despite lots of struggles and a lackluster box office reception, Raging Bull is now hailed as a cinematic masterpiece.

One of Robert De Niro's most beloved films (and the last one he won an Oscar for) is Raging Bull, the 1980 classic directed by Martin Scorsese. It was the duo's fourth film together and an adaptation of former middleweight boxing champion Jake Lamotta's 1970 memoir, Raging Bull: My Story. At the time of its release, it was a box office disappointment and received mixed reviews despite eight Oscar nominations, but today it is regarded as a modern classic and one of the best films by everyone involved in its production.

Image
Exclusive: Director Cameron Van Hoy has entered production on The Prince, a new feature drama penned by Pulitzer Prize winner and Oscar nominee David Mamet. Scott Haze (Old Henry) leads a starry ensemble that also includes Nicolas Cage (Pig), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Giancarlo Esposito (Parish) and Andy Garcia (Ocean’s Eleven).

The Prince chronicles an addict’s tumultuous odyssey through the high-stakes world of power, pleasure, and pain on a transformative journey toward recovery.

While unconfirmed, we’re told by multiple sources close to the project that the lead character Parker, played by Haze, is inspired at least in part by Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, whose abuse of drugs and alcohol is well documented — including in his 2021 memoir Beautiful Things — and who was found guilty Tuesday in Delaware of three felony counts related to the purchase of a gun in 2018.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Raging Bull
Image
"Raging Bull" knocked audiences flat on their backs when it premiered over four decades ago. The boxing biography, which is still considered among director Martin Scorsese's best films, unfolds as a rags-to-riches-to-rags story about a brutal middleweight fighter whose personal life never quite matches up to his success in the ring. Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Cathy Moriarty headlined the film's wildly talented ensemble, while late "Cheers" star Tommy Como played a local mobster and actress Theresa Saldana, who passed away in 2016, played protagonist Jake's second wife Lenora.

While time has taken some of these talented actors away from us, and the real Jake Lamotta died in 2017, each member of the "Raging Bull" core trio is still acting today. To present a "where are they now" about an actor as famous and prolific as De Niro would be silly, but if you're looking for another great De Niro...

Andrew Cunanan True Story Explained (& What The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story Left Out)
Image
Andrew Cunanan had a tragic childhood, witnessing his father's abuse and experiencing financial ruin. Cunanan was highly intelligent, even memorizing an entire encyclopedia set, but struggled with fitting in with wealthier peers. Cunanan's ultimate motive for killing Gianni Versace was jealousy, as he coveted Versace's wealth, fame, and acceptance as a gay celebrity.

Following the release and success of 2018's The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, many are wondering what the true story of the infamous spree killer, Andrew Cunanan, actually is and what information the show left out. Created by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, American Crime Story is a Ryan Murphy-produced true crime anthology series in which each season focuses on a different true crime event with a new set of characters. Season 1, The People v. O.J. Simpson, chronicles the O.J. Simpson murder trial, and season 3 is called Impeachment and focuses on the Clinton-Lewinsky sex scandal.

How Did Casper The Ghost Die?
Image
Casper's backstory adds a layer of tragedy to his character, exploring his death and why he became a ghost. The movie Casper mixed live-action with CGI and became the first to feature a fully CGI character in a lead role. Casper developed a strong friendship with Kat, and through his memory, it was revealed that he died from pneumonia at the age of 12.

Casper revealed parts of the Friendly Ghost’s backstory, including how he died, adding a layer of tragedy to his story. The adventures of Casper the Friendly Ghost started in a series of cartoons, and in 1995, he made the jump to the big screen in Casper, directed by Brad Silberling. Casper mixed live-action with CGI in order to bring the title ghost and his uncles, the Ghostly Trio, to life, becoming the first movie to have a fully CGI character in the lead role. Where The Casper Cast Is Now
Image
The movie Casper premiered 28 years ago, meaning the cast has had plenty of time to embark on a lot of new projects since then. The film starred classic '90s actors Christina Ricci and Devon Sawa as the film's leads. However, Casper also featured Hollywood royalty like Cathy Moriarty and Eric Idle.

While many of the film's actors took on projects with a similar spooky Halloween atmosphere to Casper, others leaned more into diverse comedy roles. A few of the stars even returned to the Casper franchise for other installments, while others never looked back. Here's what the cast of Casper has been up to since the 1995 film's premiere.

Christina Ricci (Kat Harvey)

Christina Ricci portrayed one of Casper's lead characters, Kat Harvey, whom Casper had a crush on. Ricci has always had a penchant for darker, spooky roles, as she also starred in the '90s Addams Family films.

Cop Land: Is this Sylvester Stallone’s Best Performance?
Image
1996 was a dark year for The Italian Stallion. Sylvester Stallone had two pricey flops in 1995, with Judge Dredd and Assassins. His Christmas of 1996 disaster movie release, Daylight, was another box office bomb. Just a few years before, Stallone had made a significant comeback with Cliffhanger and Demolition Man, but now the whole industry was changing. Carolco, the company that financed some of the era’s biggest hits, had gone bankrupt, and action movies were getting smaller and smaller. Arnold Schwarzenegger was on the decline, with Eraser a smaller hit than usual. Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal were only a few years away from making direct-to-video movies. What was Sly to do? The result is one of his very best movies –Cop Land – as we explore in the episode of Sylvester Stallone Revisited.

In the 1990s, one of the biggest stars on the planet was Sylvester Stallone’s former protege,...

Rocky Loses Best Sports Movie Of All Time To Martin Scorsese’s 1980 Box Office Bomb In 15-Year-Old Poll
Image
AFI's 2008 poll determined Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull as the greatest sports movie of all time, beating out Rocky. Despite Rocky's success and cultural impact, experts believe Raging Bull deserves the title due to its portrayal of real-life boxer Jake Lamotta. Boxing films, like Raging Bull and Rocky, hold a special place in sports movies due to the intimate and cinematic nature of the sport.

Rocky is certainly one of the greatest sports movies of all time, but a 2008 American Film Institute (AFI) poll determined that another boxing movie is actually the genre's champ. There's nothing quite like the Rocky movie franchise. Following its release in 1976, the original Rocky went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture and has spawned at least eight sequels, two of them part of the spinoff series Creed. In 2020, Guinness named Rocky the most successful sports movie franchise (obviously excluding the Fast & Furious films). Still,...

Natasha Lyonne Says Being Called Courageous for Portraying a Lesbian Was 'Offensive'
Image
Back in 1999, years before Poker Face and Russian Doll, Natasha Lyonne starred as Megan Bloomfield in Jamie Babbit's cult classic But I'm a Cheerleader. The film follows Megan, a popular high school cheerleader who struggles with her feelings towards her boyfriend. Megan's parents suspect their daughter may be a lesbian, so they opt to send her away to conversion therapy. Once there, Megan befriends Graham Eaton (Clea DuVall) and the two eventually fall in love. The film, which also features Melanie Lynskey, RuPaul, and Cathy Moriarty, opened to predominantly negative reviews but has since amassed a cult following and has been credited for being ahead of its time.

In a recent interview with The Independent, Lyonne recalls being asked if she felt courageous for portraying an LGBTQ character after the release of But I'm a Cheerleader:

“It was the most offensive thing in the world. Like when they...

Raging Bull 4K Restoration Trailer: Martin Scorsese’s Boxing Masterpiece Returns to the Ring
Image
While we await official confirmation that Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon will indeed bow at the Cannes Film Festival, it’s not the only film from the director getting a release this year. Showtime will hopefully date his documentary Personality Crisis: One Night Only soon, and now one of his most beloved classics has received a 4K restoration and is returning to theaters next month.

Supervised by Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker, the new restoration of their 1980 drama Raging Bull, starring Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty, and Joe Pesci, was created in 4K resolution on a Lasergraphics Director film scanner from the 35mm original camera negative. The original 2.0 surround soundtrack was remastered from the 35mm three-track magnetic track. Ahead of an April 14 release at Film Forum, a new trailer has now arrived.

As for Killers of the Flower Moon, costume designer Jacqueline West talked about her experience with Deadline.

Cop Land's Casting Didn't Go The Way James Mangold Had Hoped
Image
One of the first things that come to mind about James Mangold's 1997 crime drama "Cop Land" is its stacked cast — and how some of them played against type. Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, and Robert De Niro were just the tip of the macho iceberg in a who's-who ensemble of stars and familiar character actors. There was also Peter Berg, Janeane Garofalo, Robert Patrick, Michael Rapaport, Annabella Sciorra, Noah Emmerich, and Malik Yoba -- the list goes on and on. Even smaller roles utilized notable Martin Scorsese alumni like Cathy Moriarty and Frank Vincent, and future "The Sopranos" stars Edie Falco and Tony Sirico (the latter of whom only appears in a surveillance photo). This was the movie that put "Rocky" and "Raging Bull" in the ring together and had Stallone gain 40 pounds to play a half-deaf sheriff in a New Jersey town populated by corrupt cops.

Yet for Mangold,...

Raging Bull Served As A Big Inspiration For Damien Chazelle's Whiplash
Image
In Damien Chazelle's youth, his aspirations flip-flopped from filmmaking to jazz drumming and back again. He combined his two passions for his debut "Whiplash," a short he turned into a feature. Chazelle's story follows Andrew Neimen (Miles Teller), a drumming student determined to be one of the greats. First, Andrew has to survive the tutelage of Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), who's basically Sergeant Hartman (R. Lee Ermey) from "Full Metal Jacket" if he taught at a conservatory instead of a boot camp.

One film which Chazelle cited as an influence was Martin Scorsese's "Raging Bull." Scorsese's muse Robert De Niro played Jake La Motta, the real-life "Bronx Bull" and championship boxer. As Jake picks up more and more notches on his boxing record, his personal struggles only grow.

Both films are about a man aiming to be at the top of a performing field: Andrew jazz drumming,...

How the New Queer Cinema Shaped the ‘90s Indie Film Boom
Image
Coined by the film historian and critic B. Ruby Rich in 1992 to give voice to the explosion in queer film she was witnessing on the burgeoning film festival circuit, the New Queer Cinema’s influence on independent film cannot be overstated. The ‘80s saw films like Jim Jarmusch’s “Stranger Than Paradise” and Steven Soderbergh’s “Sex, Lies, and Videotape” explode the idea of what film could be, in turn inspiring a new generation of radical queer filmmakers to pick up the camera and crack the whole thing wide open.

As Hollywood churned out blockbusters like “Terminator 2” and “Jurassic Park,” anyone paying attention could see that the real fun was being had way below budget. Sundance was still a new little gathering in Park City, where someone fresh out of film school could show a film and meet likeminded artists. Throughout the decade, Sundance gradually established itself as the...

But I’m a Cheerleader Blu-ray Review
Image
The first thing to say is that Lionsgate has packed a great transfer into this new Blu-ray release. The source material has been rendered with fine detail, low grain, and vibrant colours. This is good news because, as its cult fan base will know, But I’m a Cheerleader is a film of pinks, greens and blues. Fans can also enjoy a small selection of special features, including a cast reunion film and a ‘making of’ feature. “I haven’t seen that in years!” will be the sentiment of most people who buy this, but what about newcomers? Well, it depends on their age, because Jamie Babbit’s film is a teen comedy that caters almost exclusively to its target audience.

Natasha Lyonne stars as Megan, a young lesbian cheerleader whose religious parents send her to conversion therapy. A dark premise, right? Not really, because this is a pantomime social satire...
