Are Horror Movies Really a Gateway to Hell?
Image
Could watching horror movies open a genuine gateway to demonic influence? It’s a notion that might seem laughable to some, but actress Candace Cameron Bure is entirely serious.

The Full House star made headlines recently by arguing that horror films do more than just frighten audiences – they can open spiritual doorways into viewers’ homes. “If you’re watching [horror], that’s a portal that could let stuff inside,” Bure stated on a recent episode of her podcast, further explaining, “I don’t even want someone watching a scary movie in our house on the TV, because to me, that’s just a portal.”

This isn’t entirely new territory. The concept of films carrying spiritual threats or curses has been around for decades. During the filming of classics like The Exorcist and Poltergeist, strange and tragic events befell cast and crew members, fueling speculation of a supernatural curse around these films.

Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) Review
Image
The success of the original Poltergeist (1982), a masterful blend of suburban anxiety and supernatural terror, seemed to guarantee a rich future for the franchise. Directed by Tobe Hooper and famously guided by Steven Spielberg, the film remains a textbook case of how to balance heart-pounding scares with moments of familial tenderness. By contrast, Poltergeist II: The Other Side has always felt like a pale echo of its predecessor – a sequel that revisits familiar territory but struggles to carve out its own identity.

Set a year after the events of the original, Poltergeist II finds the Freeling family – Diane (JoBeth Williams), Steven (Craig T. Nelson), Robbie (Oliver Robins), and the ever-captivating Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke) – attempting to rebuild their lives. Now living with Diane’s mother, they’re haunted not just by the memories of their spectral ordeal but by literal ghosts who refuse to let go. Their suburban nightmare is far from over.

Poltergeist Was a Cursed Film According to Some Theories
Image

Poltergeist was one of a handful of films that Steven Spielberg conceptualized but didn't end up directing due to contractual obligations to another film in this case, E.T. Spielberg had written the story idea and drafted out a script with three other writers for a horror film that combined his love of suburban Americana with a supernatural horror. Spielberg was still a producer on the film and settled on horror master Tobe Hooper, famous for his film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, to direct. While Spielberg's original concept was more science fiction, Hooper's influence steered the film towards being a ghost story.

Poltergeist's plot centers around a family who,...

Amazon's Poltergeist television series lands Prison Break and Supernatural writers
Image
The previously announced Poltergeist television series is reportedly still in development, according to Variety. On August 19, the outlet exclusively revealed that the upcoming television show being produced by Amazon MGM Studios had found its showrunners in Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson. In addition to showrunning, the duo will write and executive produce the series, which will be produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television.

No plot details have been shared just yet about the show, but we know it's inspired by the original Tobe Hooper-directed film from 1982. Poltergeist is considered a horror classic and went on to spawn two sequels, Poltergeist II: The Other Side and Poltergeist III, and a 2015 remake.

Poltergeist Is Getting The Horror TV Treatment From Star Trek And Supernatural Writers
Image
In today's unnecessary franchises news, Amazon is developing a TV series based on "Poltergeist," the 1982 horror classic directed by the late, great Tobe Hooper and based on a story by Steven Spielberg (who co-wrote the script), which also inspired the song "Shining" by the band Misfits. According to Variety, Amazon MGM has tapped Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson to serve as writers, showrunners, and executive producers on the series. As of now, however, details are sparse when it comes to the show's approach to the larger franchise.

Vazquez previously worked on "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Prison Break," while Thompson worked on "Supernatural" and served as the showrunner for the prequel series "The Winchesters." The series also brings the horror property full circle, seeing as the original "Poltergeist" was actually inspired by a television show — specifically an episode of "The Twilight Zone" — and is now inspiring a TV series of its own.

Poltergeist TV Series Taps Walking Dead, Supernatural Vets
Image
Horror fans received a scary treat last Halloween when it was announced that a Poltergeist television series was in development at Amazon MGM Studios. News was scarce at the time, with the only tidbit being that the series is inspired by the 1982 film of the same name. While plot details remain a mystery, major moves are happening behind the scenes with the announcement that Amazon has hired a pair of showrunners, writers, and executive producers with connections to Fear the Walking Dead and Supernatural.

Per Variety, Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson have been tapped as showrunners, writers, and executive producers on the Poltergeist television series. Vazquez's credits cover a variety of genres and series, including Fear the Walking Dead, Once Upon a Time, Star Trek: Discovery, Prison Break, and Nikita. While Thompson doesn't boast as many credits, he was a writer on The CW's Supernatural before going on to...

Poltergeist 2's Villain Is So Scary Because The Actor Was Dying
Image
Poltergeist 2's Reverend Kane, played by Julian Beck, is an iconic horror villain despite Beck's battle with stomach cancer during filming. Beck's health condition added to the eerie appearance of Reverend Kane, making him even more terrifying on screen. Julian Beck passed away before post-production was completed, leading to some of his lines being re-recorded by a sound-alike. His death contributed to the "Poltergeist Curse" surrounding the franchise.

1986 sequel Poltergeist 2's villain, the terrifying Reverend Kane, is a horror icon, but actor Julian Beck barely made it through production alive. The first Poltergeist, directed by Tobe Hooper and released in 1982, is a horror classic, managing to scare audiences while only being rated PG. At the time, the PG-13 rating didn't exist. In 1986, Poltergeist's Freeling Family — minus older daughter Dana, as actress Dominique Dunne had been tragically murdered in the intervening years — returned for another ghostly adventure. Few...

Poltergeist A.I. Fan Poster is an 80s Neon Nightmare
Image
A new fan-made poster for the horror classic Poltergeist reimagines the film as a neon nightmare, deviating from the original black-and-white design. Despite being made over 40 years ago, Poltergeist still unnerves audiences with its horrifying haunting and ahead-of-its-time special effects. Efforts to revive the Poltergeist franchise have been ongoing, with a failed remake in 2015 and now a potential TV series in the works following Amazon's acquisition of MGM.

The 1982 horror classic Poltergeist is still considered one of the scariest movies ever released with a PG-13 certificate. However, a new A.I. generated fan-poster has reimagined the classic Tobe Hooper film as a neon nightmare that is probably more frightening than anything that befalls the Freeling family.

The poster, shared by @nckss_82 on Instagram, deviates significantly from the original Poltergeist poster to create something that screams “modern sensibilities” over subtlty. The classic poster's iconic black-and-white image of central character Carol Anne,...

The Poltergeist Movies Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
"They're here."

With those two words, the nebulous world of the supernatural, the ominous ambiguity of the paranormal, and the deep-seated terror that is inherent in the concept of ghosts were perfectly summed up by 1982's "Poltergeist." Despite the film being over 40 years old, it still holds up as one of the most modern movies about the paranormal ever made. Sure, there had been films about ghosts and hauntings before, but many of these tended to be set in remote, antiquated locations such as spooky old mansions and abandoned homes on a hill. More than even the well-regarded visual effects, the biggest innovation of "Poltergeist" is its quintessentially American suburban setting, the inherent message being that ghosts aren't merely sequestered in places that average people would never dare go; instead, they exist right next to us.

Released during the busy summer of '82, "Poltergeist" more than held its own, making $121.7 million over a $10.7 million budget.

‘Poltergeist’ TV Series Now in Early Development from Amazon and MGM

We are nearly ten years removed from the most recent installment in the Poltergeist franchise, with the Gil Kenan-directed remake released back in 2015. That film failed to make a splash of any kind, coming along in the wake of two sequels and a TV series.

The Spookiest TV and Movie Urban Legends
Image
*Adopts old-timey prospector voice* Back in my day, we got to believe all sorts of fun nonsense. A friend of a friend would claim to have seen Bigfoot at a Sears. A friend of a friend of a friend would report the existence of a ghost train. A friend of a friend of a friend, twice removed, would send a chain email convinced that if they didn’t their soul would be harvested by a demon. We called this phenomena “urban legends” – silly little folkloric tales that made the world a touch more whimsical.

And then the World Wide Web came along with its “fact-checkers,” “journalists,” and “people who have a base level grasp of reality” to tear it all away. We used to have it so good before the internet, I swear to God. Pull the plug already.

Still, even in the era of mass media, some spooky urban...

Poltergeist: The Chilling True Story That Inspired The 1982 Horror Classic
Image
In Tobe Hooper's "Poltergeist," five-year-old Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourke), the youngest in the Freeling family, points at the television static and participates in an inexplicable conversation with the screen. Carol Anne repeats this ritual the next night and ominously declares, "They're he-e-e-re" — this proclamation marks the beginning of the end for the Freelings, who are targeted and torn apart by the supernatural chaos that grips their home. The poltergeist activity that the Freelings endure ranges from benign to macabre, where things start off with bent or broken kitchenware and escalate to a sentient tree attempting to devour one or more family members.

From the perspective of spirit lore, poltergeists are known to be raucous entities who enjoy messing with furniture or pulling off mischievous pranks to annoy homeowners. In "Poltergeist," Hooper imbues these spirits with deeply malicious intent, where they prey on pure life forces and ambush innocents when they least expect it.

Marc Gilpin, Young Actor on ‘Jaws 2,’ Dies at 56
Image
Marc Gilpin, who played the younger son of Roy Scheider’s Police Chief Martin Brody in Jaws 2, has died. He was 56.

Gilpin died Saturday in Dallas after a long battle with glioblastoma, his older sister, Frasier actress Peri Gilpin, announced.

After answering a casting call, Gilpin beat out hundreds of other boys to get hired as Sean Brody in the 1978 sequel to the blockbuster Jaws (1975), directed by Steven Spielberg. He was 11 when the movie reached theaters.

Jaws 2 was directed by Jeannot Szwarc. Lorraine Gary returned as Chief Brody’s wife, but their sons, Michael and Sean, portrayed by Chris Rebello and Jay Mello in the original, were replaced by Mark Gruner and Gilpin in the second film.

A year later, Gilpin guest-starred on NBC’s CHiPs and appeared with his younger sister, April, on ABC’s Fantasy Island. In 1981, he was in the films The Legend of the Long Ranger and Earthbound.

The Arrow in the Head Show goes to the other side with Poltergeist II
Tobe Hooper
A new episode of The Arrow in the Head Show has just been released, and in this one hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are talking about Poltergeist – but not the Tobe Hooper / Steven Spielberg classic from 1982. The Poltergeist movie they’re focusing on in this episode is the 1986 sequel Poltergeist II: The Other Side (watch it Here), the one with the creepy reverend and the tequila worm. To find out what they had to say about it, check out the video embedded above!

Directed by Brian Gibson from a screenplay written by Michael Grais and Mark Victor, Poltergeist II has the following synopsis: The Freelings have escaped their haunted house, which is now being studied by paranormal investigators, including shaman Taylor. ABC7 New York Anchor Ken Rosato Was Fired For Hot Mic Insult
Image
An ABC7 anchor in New York City was fired after a hot mic allegedly caught him insulting his co-host, a report has said.

Ken Rosato is reported to have been “immediately fired” after he called co-anchor Shirleen Allicot a “c***,” according to an anonymous source cited by Page Six, which broke the story.

Rosato was off-air when the insult was made, but it was picked up “on an open mic” and he was immediately let go from the ABC affiliate. Page Six received emailed confirmation he had exited, and also reported that colleagues had been informed in “one-on-one chats” on Friday.

One ABC7 source told Page Six there was speculation he used a racial slur, but his agent has strenuously denied this.

Rosato was the anchor of ABC7’s Eyewitness News This Morning program with Allicot and Heather O’Rourke, having first joined as a freelance reporter before being promoted.

10 Cursed Movies (& The Truth Behind Them)
Image
Some of Hollywood’s most iconic movies are also rumored to have "cursed" productions. Due to a combination of urban legends and well-known unfortunate accidents on the set of these films, the curse behind a movie’s making becomes as popular as the movie itself. Many of these films are considered cursed for tragic reasons involving injuries, fires, lightning, and death. From Superman to Poltergeist, these "cursed" movies make for sensational stories, but this list will also delve into the truth behind each movie’s supposed curse.

Chaos and misfortune are common in any film production, yet the most famous troubled productions lead audiences to believe a movie is cursed. For this list, "cursed" refers to a movie’s troubled and tragic film set or the horrific events that occurred after a film’s release. Some of these cursed movies include events that can be violent, graphic, and triggering. Whether...

6 of the Best Apartment Horror Movies to Get You Ready for ‘Evil Dead Rise’
Image
Gothic castles and faraway cabins are classic genre fare, but there’s something to be said for scary movies that tell stories about claustrophobic urban environments and the horrors of being isolated despite being surrounded by densely packed neighbors. Not only are these stories more relatable for big-city folks like myself, but they’re also uniquely positioned to deliver down-to-earth scares with a social twist.

And in honor of Evil Dead Rise brilliantly relocating the action to an LA apartment building, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the best Apartment Horror movies. After all, there’s nothing scarier than finding yourself trapped in a high rise with nowhere to go but down!

In the interest of keeping the list varied, we’ll be leaving out a few obvious entries like Candyman and Rosemary’s Baby, as I think we can assume that most of our readers have already seen these.

How Skinamarink Uses Television To Put You In The Mindset Of A Child
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Skinamarink."

Kyle Edward Ball's "Skinamarink" has become an indie horror phenomenon. For those who need catching up, the micro-budget film was financed via GoFundMe and was shot in Ball's childhood home for a thin 15,000 budget. It initially premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival in 2022, but soon after, the film leaked on the internet after a digital festival screening and became a viral sensation. "Skinamarink" was soon spread all over YouTube and TikTok; the grainy found footage video aesthetic made it an interesting and horrifying watch for those locked in their houses during Covid-19. This month, the film has been enjoying a successful limited theatrical run before it launches on Shudder on February 2nd.

"Skinamarink" follows two children who wake up in the middle of the night to find out that their parents have gone missing. Not only that, but all the doors and windows...

Is the Poltergeist Movie Franchise Cursed? The Myth, Explained
Image
From "Halloween" to "A Nightmare on Elm Street," there's no shortage of iconic horror movies from the '70s and '80s that launched long-running franchises. Still, "Poltergeist" stands out among the rest because of its cult following - and many of those fans believe the Poltergeist franchise is actually cursed.

A reboot of the classic 1982 horror film "Poltergeist" came out in 2015, but let's be honest: nothing could compare to the original. While no horrific accidents occurred on the set of the most recent movie, there are plenty of rumors of a curse on the original film trilogy's cast.

The movie revolves around a suburban family who moves into a new home and begins to notice strange things involving their 5-year-old daughter, Carol Ann. Turns out, menacing spirits are haunting the house, and while their interactions seem harmless at first, their true evil nature is soon revealed when Carol Ann goes missing,...

Tobe Hooper
Poltergeist review – out-of-the-box 80s scarer can still knock the furniture over
Tobe Hooper
Fright master Tobe Hooper’s 1982 movie has Steven Spielberg’s fingerprints all over it, but has a disturbing, satirical edge that’s all its own

The 80s classic gets a Halloween re-release for its 40th anniversary: a supernatural chiller and anti-gentrification satire that came out the same year as Et – Mr Hyde to that film’s Dr Jekyll, perhaps – and one of the most Spielbergian films not actually directed by Steven Spielberg. It is also a movie with its own particular flavour of sadness, owing to the early deaths of two of its stars: Dominique Dunne, daughter of author Dominick Dunne and niece of Joan Didion, killed in the year of the film’s release by her violent ex-boyfriend, and Heather O’Rourke, who died in 1988 at 12 years oldafter suffering cardiac arrest and septic shock connected with a bowel condition.

It was directed by horror maestro Tobe Hooper, who claimed to...

Poltergeist's 'Dead Pool' Scene Was As Gruesome To Shoot As Its Name Implies
Image
The '80s was a pretty scary time to be a kid. Over in the United Kingdom, we were routinely terrified by grim public information films and even educational content like "Dark Towers" and "The Boy From Space" were pretty hair-raising for a class full of eight-year-olds at the time. Then you had "Watership Down," a tale of bunny brutality that inexplicably received a U (Universal) certificate and scarred an entire generation for life.

Unlike the United States, we didn't get our 12 certificate (the British equivalent of the PG-13) until 1989, which meant big Hollywood movies like "Gremlins" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" were still available to rent with the family-friendly PG rating. As a result, many impressionable '80s kids were traumatized by nasty little creatures trashing Christmas and a cult leader ripping out someone's still-beating heart well before they were equipped to deal with such stuff.

The Iconic ‘Poltergeist’ Clown Doll Still Triggers Nightmares [Scene Screams]
Heather O'Rourke
The restless spirit tormenting the Freeling home in 1982’s Poltergeist uses every scare tactic possible in its attempts to snatch young Carol Anne Freeling (Heather O’Rourke). That includes utilizing each family member’s worst fears against them and, in turn, ours. Director Tobe Hooper tackled two phobias at once when the poltergeist targets Robbie (Oliver Robins), ushering in the climax […]

Cursed Films: Inside the ‘Poltergeist Curse’
Heather O'Rourke in Poltergeist (1982)
As a child of the ‘80s, the so-called Poltergeist curse looms largest in my memory amongst films supposedly plagued by supernaturally bad luck. And as a paranormal pop culture researcher, the fact real skeletons were used in the finale’s swimming pool scene makes the notion of a curse all the more compelling. As purely a storytelling device, a curse would make sense; it tracks. Of course there is most likely no truth to it either.

To be sure, there is indeed tragedy connected to the film. Most notable is the murder of 22-year-old actress Dominique Dunne in November 1982–five months following the film’s June release–and the death of 12-year-old Heather O’Rourke during the filming of Poltergeist III due to complications from an undetected bowel obstruction.

The premature deaths of the two were enough to create the notion of a cursed franchise, which was only exacerbated by the revelation of the skeletons…...

How Shudder’s Cursed Films Explores the Most Troubled Horror Movies Ever
Heather O'Rourke in Poltergeist (1982)
Some movies are born bad. Poltergeist, The Omen, The Exorcist; these are iconic horror films with reputations of misfortune and mishap. Either due to a series of grim coincidences that form a pattern or one or two notable tragedies, a handful of films are said to have near-evil legacies. Maybe it really is as Shirley Jackson mused in The Haunting of Hill House? If some spots attach to themselves an atmosphere of goodness, “It might not then be too fanciful to say some houses are born bad.” So why not movies too?

Within horror films, curses are caused by the bite of a werewolf or a boy who willfully passes along a demonic Std, or a shamed elderly woman who utters an incantation over the button she’s torn from someone. Perhaps it is not a leap then that the production behind a movie about Satan’s offspring would likewise...

Cursed Films (2020)
Preview: Initial Thoughts on Shudder’s New Cursed Films Series, Featuring Poltergeist and The Omen
Cursed Films (2020)
If you’re a movie fan, then chances are you’re already familiar with the concept of “cursed films,” which is when a project’s legacy has something of a sinister undertone to it due to extenuating circumstances beyond any sort of normal production woes. And for their new series entitled Cursed Films, Shudder is diving into whether or not films like Poltergeist, The Omen, The Exorcist, The Crow, and Twilight Zone: The Movie were actually doomed from the start, or victims of being dealt an unfortunate hand by fate.

The two episodes this writer had the opportunity to check out were for Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist as well as Richard Donner’s The Omen, and for the most part, I found them extremely entertaining, although admittedly, neither one was very in-depth as a whole. For Poltergeist, filmmaker Jay Cheel dives into all the terrible things that happened to various...

‘Cursed Films’ Review: Shudder’s New Docuseries Lacks Mystery
Heather O'Rourke in Poltergeist (1982)
Last year, AMC’s horror-centric streaming service Shudder unveiled the compelling documentary “Horror Noire,” examining the role African-Americans played throughout film history. That feature’s success sparked a desire for the service to cater to more niche facets of film history, and their next foray into that arena is “Cursed Films,” which looks to examine films that have long histories of being cursed. The material is interesting, especially in conjunction with the features the five-part documentary series covers, but director Jay Cheel takes too many tangential digressions to keep things from feeling tiring.

When the 1982 feature “Poltergeist” debuted it was quickly tempered by the murder of actress Dominique Dunne. Actors Will Sampson and Julian Beck would pass after the film’s sequel came out, while leading child star Heather O’Rourke passed at just 11-years-old while working on “Poltergeist III.” It’s easy to see where audiences would start to wonder...

Kiss of the Tarantula (1975)
Shudder's Cursed Films Trailer Explores Legendary Ill-Fated Horror Movie Productions
Kiss of the Tarantula (1975)
Sometimes, what goes on behind the scenes of some of our favorite horror movies are much more terrifying than what winds up on the screen. That point is really driven home in the upcoming Shudder series Cursed Films, which explores the tragic and strange coincidences during the productions of many classic movies. Ahead of the launch of the documentary series in April, Shudder has gone ahead and unveiled a trailer for Cursed Films, and it does a fine job at letting us know what we can expect to see from the series. You can take a look at it below.

As seen in the trailer, multiple horror titles will be showcased for their supposed curses in Cursed Films. That of course includes the Tobe Hooper horror movie Poltergeist, which is famous for an alleged curse which took the lives of several major cast members. Sadly, that includes the horrific deaths...

Blu-ray Reviews: Poltergeist II: The Other Side and Poltergeist III Collector’s Editions
There was never really a need to sequelize 1982’s Poltergeist. It told a complete story. It vanquished the evil spirit haunting the house by film’s end. Heck, it even vanquished the house itself. But because the original movie was a hit and it was the ’80s, the Tobe Hooper/Steven Spielberg collaboration got not just one sequel but two, despite the fact that it does not lend itself to being a franchise. New villains and new mythology—and eventually even new family members—were introduced to keep the story going, albeit with mixed results. And while the sequels have their fans, they’re hardly among the most beloved horror films of the decade. Thanks to Scream Factory’s new Collector's Editions of both, horror fans now have the chance to reevaluate them in the best possible format.

Though released four years after the 1982 original, Poltergeist II: The Other Side...
