'I'm Very Excited': Oscar Winner Confirms Casting as Murder, She Wrote Reboot's New Jessica Fletcher
The reboot of Murder, She Wrote is moving forward. Previously, it had been reported that Jamie Lee Curtis was being eyed to star in a feature film adaptation of the hit TV series for Universal. A new update has now been revealed with Curtis, who won an Oscar for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, confirming her involvement.
“Oh, it’s… happening," Curtis said when asked about the project, via Entertainment Tonight. "We’re a minute away, but yeah, very excited. Very excited. But I’m tamping down my enthusiasm until we start shooting. I mean, I have a couple of other things to hustle, and then I’ll get to enjoy that work.”

When Gargoyles was first released in 1994, it had the option to stay comfortably put in its animated lane. Instead, it dared to outshine Law & Order, with its moral ambiguity, depth, and serialized storytelling. I agree that Law & Order was a pioneer in its genre that essentially paved the way for episode-wise crime procedurals. But what Gargoyles did by turning that formula on its head and intertwining noir, mythology, and complex human dilemmas into one daring narrative cannot be ignored.
Sure, the supernatural angle was a treat, but what really intensified the animated series was the way it mirrored real-life ethical and legal tensions, while being a cartoon for kids. Streaming now on Disney+, the show is finally getting the attention it deserves. It’s a trailblazing hybrid that was way ahead of its time.

Having been a fan of the original Law & Order, watching reruns in college on lazy weekday afternoons, I’ve come to expect a certain built-in nostalgia. So imagine my utter shock when the show took the classic intro and tried to modernize it, as disastrously as Madonna’s attempt to “revitalize” Don McLean’s “American Pie.”
Dun Dun.
However, I quickly let my anger fade as Law & Order: Organized Crime settled into what has always made the franchise successful: compelling characters, a likable cast, social commentary, and those ripped-from-the-headlines storylines that keep the series relevant.
RelatedScream Factory: Orphan Review Peacock’s Law & Order: Organized Crime Review and Synopsis
The exception here is spinoff, which follows a more ’90s approach reminiscent of the critically acclaimed—but less widely watched—Homicide: Life on the Street. The characters and storylines are less stoic, even more personal, and the emotional stakes resonate.

John Mulaney is bringing his chaotic live talk show back to Netflix this week, with sidekick Richard Kind along for the ride, thank goodness. From all accounts, Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney will be very much like last year’s limited series John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in L.A., and is not, as the trailer would have you believe, a 1970s political conspiracy theory thriller.
To promote the show, Mulaney has been making the interview rounds, which has entailed a lot of discussions about his personal life, including his children and marriage to actress Olivia Munn in July 2024.
While celebrity wedding reports are usually boring as hell, one of the most intriguing details to emerge from Mulaney and Munn’s private ceremony was the fact that it was officiated by Sam Waterston, aka Jack McCoy from Law & Order. Thankfully, the wedding didn’t begin with someone randomly finding a corpse behind a dumpster,...

On Sunday, Feb. 23, Hollywood gathered for another event at the 2025 SAG Awards. The night had a lot of expected, but also some surprise wins, and many wholesome moments.
During one segment, Mariska Hargitay took the stage to take fans, and the celebrities present, on a walk down memory lane. The actress' most famous role was the one of Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order's first spinoff, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The video, shared online by Discussing Film, showed Hargitay taking everyone on a stroll down memory of the guest stars on the show before they became famous actors.

As of this writing, there have been approximately 900,000 episodes of TV to have come out of Dick Wolf's long-running "Law & Order" franchise.
In actuality, that number is closer to 1,400, but that's still nothing to sneeze at. The original "Law & Order" debuted in 1990, and it quickly became one of the most celebrated crime shows on television. After a few years, it also became one of America's most reliable comfort-watches, providing miniature grit-covered criminal melodramas that could be easily consumed in four-to-five-hour binge-watching blocks. "Law & Order," along with its many spinoffs, were all rigidly and predictably structured, letting audiences relax over the sight of dead bodies.
Characters rotated out of the "Law & Order" shows regularly. There were certainly long-standing fan favorites, but the real main character of "Law & Order" was the criminal justice system itself. In the world of "Law & Order," cops were hard-working and devoted...

Tony Roberts, the urbane supporting actor known for his collaborations with Woody Allen in six films — including the Oscar best picture winner Annie Hall — and two Broadway plays, died Friday. He was 85.
Roberts died of complications from lung cancer at his home in Manhattan, his daughter, Nicole Burley, told The New York Times.
From Take Her, She’s Mine in 1961 to The Royal Family in 2009, Roberts appeared on Broadway 23 times. In between, he stepped in for Robert Redford in the original production of Neil Simon‘s Barefoot in the Park, directed by Mike Nichols.
In the long-running 1969-70 Broadway hit Play It Again, Sam, written by and starring Allen, Roberts portrayed Dick Christie, whose wife has an affair with his best friend, the magazine writer Allan Felix (Allen).

“On Call” is a decent small-scale police procedural. But is it decent enough when it comes from the house of Dick Wolf?
The pedigreed eight-part show traded broadcast networks for Prime Video, where it will premiere Thursday. The novelty is that each episode is a bite-sized 30 minutes, with modest character arcs that extend over multiple episodes, and multiple seemingly random crime sequences that propel individual installments.
The result feels like “Cops” with a script. The ride-along series puts the audience largely behind the wheel with Traci Harmon. She’s a divorced surfer with a chip on her shoulder, a junkie sister and a troubled relationship with her fellows on the force. She’s wound as tight as her bun.

Walt Disney Animation created numerous animated movies, many of which have remained relevant despite being decades old. The studio has taken many risks, pushing the boundaries in storytelling and animated visuals.
Some of their films have been very dark, with the grimmest scenes depicting a villain's death. Many of these deaths have left audiences wondering if the films are appropriate for children. Some deaths have been so dark that audiences and even the characters within the film can't help but feel sorry for the villains.
Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on December 20, 2024: Disney may make family movies, but there's nothing family-friendly about its villains' deaths. From horrific demises to fates worse than death, these are some of the darkest endings for Disney villains. This weekend, director Barry Jenkins brings the story of Mufasa to life through the live-action style popularized by the 2019 The Lion King. It was an unusual choice to craft a prequel to the popular franchise but also provided some distance from the straight-to-dvd sequels of the 2000s. With Mufasa: The Lion King, we’re seeing a return to the Disney sequels and Disney prequels of the past. It’s no longer confined to animation, but with features like Maleficient, Alice in Wonderland, and Lightyear, Disney continues to expand its franchises.
What was a very uncommon aspect of Disney for its first sixty years became popularized in the 1990s. Three decades later, we’ve seen the House of Mouse continue to roll out these films. With Mufasa: The Lion King releasing this week, here are 10 of our favorite sequels and Disney prequels. Out of fairness, we’re only including a single entry from each franchise,...

Walt Disney Pictures has been responsible for some of the greatest children’s movies ever, although the studio's committed fan base is often divided. While some Disney films are undisputed classics beloved by all, there are some releases that audiences have taken issue with, whether due to problematic depictions, outdated stereotypes, or questionable creative decisions. When a studio has so many treasured properties in its catalog, it’s no surprise that fans disagree on many issues.
Even the best Disney movies have divided fans as they debate the merits, themes, and meaning behind cherished animated and live-action releases. Disney’s recent output has led some viewers to wish for a return to the glory days of the Disney Renaissance, while others are more than pleased with the modern CGI-centric approach of the studio's output in the 21st century. Timothe Chalamet is one of Hollywood's biggest stars, having worked with legendary directors like Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan. This year, he played the lead in one of 2024's biggest blockbusters, Dune: Part Two. In his latest role, Chalamet plays musical icon Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, which releases in December. Perhaps most importantly, however, he was the inspiration for a lookalike contest that drew a crowd in New York (though he didn't win).
Before all that, half a decade before he even acted in a movie, Timothe Chalamet appeared in an episode of Law & Order in his television debut. Chalamet played a small part in an episode of the long-running criminal justice series, which just started its 24th season this year on NBC. The joy of seeing Timothe Chalamet is short-lived, however, as the episode quickly takes a dark turn.

It's no secret that a large portion of Disney's revenue in recent years has come from rebooting earlier films. From Cinderella to The Lion King and beyond, Disney has been producing live-action remakes of tons of their classic animated films, with even more of these projects currently in the works. However, one must begin to wonder whether straightforward, live-action recreations are really the most effective way for Disney to bring these classic stories back to life. With many of the live-action remakes garnering less-than-stellar reviews, one must start to question whether Disney should consider exploring an alternate path.

Late character actor Ed Wheeler did his job so well that Law & Order featured him in small parts six different times. Wheeler has been well known in New York since 1973 as a character actor and has appeared in many television shows as well as starring in several movies. One of his most recent roles was on Blue Bloods, but he also participated in several of Law & Order's best episodes.
The roles that Wheeler played in Law & Order demonstrated his versatility and talent. Although he was never part of the main Law & Order cast, every role he played was memorable, and he played a wide range of characters. He most often appeared as a member of the community the detectives were interviewing in regards to an investigation, but in later appearances, he played a prosecutor and a detective, thus demonstrating that he could do any type of role well.

One of the most iconic romantic movies in cinematic history is Dirty Dancing, and the movie's ending is what makes the film such a classic. A coming-of-age story, Dirty Dancing follows Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) while she spends summer vacation at a resort in the Catskills with her father, mother, and sister. That summer, she meets a dance instructor named Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), and the two fall for one another despite their different economic backgrounds. Through Johnny and Baby's relationship, the movie explores themes of classism, first loves, sexuality, and courage.
While Dirty Dancing has many memorable sequences, the most popular scene is the finale. Johnny returns to the resort after being fired for having a relationship with Baby. In front of all the resort staff and guests, Baby and Johnny dance to the song "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes.

Chris Noth had several reasons for leaving Law & Order. Noth played Detective Mike Logan in the series' early years. Logan was dedicated to the job, but could be a hothead, which sometimes got him into trouble. He beat up a suspect who gunned down his first partner during the season 2 opening, which was one of Law & Order's best episodes. Eventually, Logan was transferred to Staten Island Domestic Disputes after punching a homophobic politician, which was supposed to be the end of his career
While only a few characters are not returning to Law & Order in 2024, the series had quite a bit of cast turnover during its early seasons. Most notably, Sam Waterston replaced Michael Moriarty as a prosecutor; additionally, two other actors had short stints as cops before Jerry Orbach was hired as Lennie Briscoe. Logan and Briscoe are one of the partnerships most closely identified with the series.

There’s no question that Homicide: Life on The Street should be considered part of the Dick Wolf universe.
The gritty 1990s police drama was revolutionary in several ways, some of which make it feel refreshingly modern when watching it on Peacock several decades after it ended.
It also has one direct connection with Law & Order: Svu, and its fingerprints are all over some of Dick Wolf’s other shows.

John Munch Was The Bridge Between Shows The Character Originated on Homicide Before Transferring To Svu
The most obvious reason Homicide should be considered part of the Dick Wolf universe is that Richard Belzer’s John Munch appeared on both Homicide and Law & Order: Svu.
Munch was quite the traveler after Homicide ended, making cameos in The X-Files and The Wire in addition to being part of the Svu unit for its first 15 seasons.

Detective Lennie Briscoe was the longest-running lead detective in Law & Order history, appearing in multiple spin-offs. Briscoe's character arc included serving in the Armed Forces, joining the NYPD, and becoming a senior detective in the 27th Precinct. Jerry Orbach's portrayal of Briscoe was highly respected by real NYPD officers, who saw him as the epitome of a veteran NYC detective.
Detective Leonard W. "Lennie" Briscoe, played by Jerry Orbach, was one of the most influential Law & Order characters in history. Throughout its run, the NBC police procedural has had a rotating cast of characters in the roles of both the lead and the junior detective, but Briscoe was the longest-running lead detective on the show to date. Lennie Briscoe was, in fact, so influential that the corner of 53rd Street & 8th Avenue in New York City was named in Orbach's honor.

Law & Order should return to short cold opens for better pacing and increased dramatic tension in season 24. Current long cold opens risk losing audience interest by delaying the introduction of the crime. Shortening the cold opens would allow for more natural empathy-building and engaging storylines in the series.
I need Law & Order to break a bad habit in season 24. The long-running police procedural started out as the natural successor to Dragnet, focusing on the cops and prosecutors doing their jobs rather than on personal storylines. Its 2021 continuation has attempted to modernize the show by giving the police and prosecutors backstories that sometimes affect cases. However, it still sticks to the same basic formula that made it a success in the 1990s, and that has resonated with viewers enough that Law & Order has been confirmed for season 24.

Best TV dramas are subjective, but standouts explore complex themes, offer insights into society & human condition. Great dramas resonate with different generations, spark discussions, push boundaries, influence culture, and offer unforgettable viewing experiences. From gripping crime stories to epic sagas, the best TV dramas transcend genre conventions to provide immersive and engaging narratives.
Selecting the best TV dramas of all time is ultimately subjective, but several shows stand out for their overall quality and impact on the medium of television. Marked by compelling storytelling and memorable characters, these shows typically explore complex themes such as morality, identity, and power dynamics. Whether set in contemporary times or eras in the past, they offer insights into the human condition and society at large. While crime series have practically dominated television today, the greatest dramas of all time hail from all genres of TV.

Law & Order has been disrespecting both actors and fans with their character exits since the soft reboot in 2021. Many character exits are not acknowledged on-screen, leaving mysterious absences that lack closure and respect for the audience. Fans were disappointed with Camryn Manheim's exit, as her character's final appearance was just an ordinary work day with no exit story.
Law & Order handles character exits in a manner that I find tiresome and disrespectful of its audience. NBC's flagship crime drama has run for over two decades, so it's natural for there to be some turnover. I remember how surprised I was when I first learned that Jerry Orbach was not part of the original cast, as he was the actor most associated with the series in the 1990s. Box office sales are always an important metric to measure how successful a movie is, but when an indie movie is able to turn a big profit, it's an even bigger win. Limited by the lower budgets and bigger production challenges, films that are made by independent filmmakers are rarely high-grossing. Still, some iconic indies made such a huge impact on audiences that the success translates to the box office.
According to a ranking published in 2024 by the German data platform Statista, the highest-grossing independent films of all time consist mostly of dramas but also include entries in different genres. Romantic movies like Dirty Dancing and Shakespeare in Love are two examples that prove that when an indie film is well-made and a massive box office hit, the audience doesn't even associate it with an independent production. At the same, lesser-known comedies like The Full Monty are surprisingly among the highest-grossing indie films too.

Kane was soon thrusted into the world of Dick Wolf Entertainment with small roles on Law & Order and Chicago P.D. This would eventually lead to his current recurring role as Detective Terry Bruno on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which aired its season 25 finale on May 16.

Law & Order has been one of NBC's flagship programs for 23 years despite a ten-year hiatus, but is the formula that made it famous outdated now?
The original series pioneered the idea of "ripped from the headlines" stories and a format dedicating half of each episode to the police investigation and the other half to the arrestee's trial. This proved to be so popular that it spawned a ton of sequels and spinoffs.
Law & Order: Svu is the most successful, having just been renewed for a 26th season. However, Svu doesn't follow the format of its parent show most of the time, often dedicating 90% or more of the hour to the police investigation -- should its parent series follow suit?

Over the last quarter century, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has carved a place for itself in the pop culture space, changing the way people talk about and think about sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse. Detectives Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) burst on-screen with chemistry not likely to be forgotten and acting chops that only get better year after year.
A spin-off of the original Law & Order, Svu is the longest-running show in the Law & Order franchise. Its stamina on the air is due, in large part, to the performances of its lead actors — particularly Hargitay, who has been in every season of the show — and the compelling stories it tells. With well over 500 episodes, there are plenty of moments of great significance in Svu, now the longest-running primetime drama on television.

Law & Order and Special Victims Unit have been renewed for new seasons on NBC. Organized Crime's future is uncertain amid lower ratings. Organized Crime could still go the way of many cancelled Dick Wolf spinoffs.
Two of the three ongoing Law & Order shows have been officially renewed. The universe of shows from creator Dick Wolf combine crime procedural and legal procedural elements and have all branched out from the flagship show, which originally premiered on NBC in 1990. So far, the show has received six spinoffs, with several already having been cancelled. However, the first spinoff, Special Victims Unit, is still going strong with 23 seasons so far. If you left the TV on the NBC channel sometime since 1990, odds are you would hear the narrator, Steve Zirnkilton, begin a disclaimer with: “In the criminal justice system…” signifying a new episode or a re-run of Law & Order. The show utilized real crimes that made newspaper headlines with dramatized investigations, making it an incredibly compelling and relevant show on television. It is also one of the longest-running primetime series, falling just behind its own spin-off, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. It’s managed to stay fresh by using a huge list of starring cast members as detectives for different investigations, like Jerry Orbach, Chris Noth (Sex and the City), and Benjamin Bratt (Traffic). It also had various guest actors whose faces were immediately recognizable, including Robin Williams (Good Will Hunting), Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), and many more.

The good news: Law & Order Season 23 is on its way!
Now that the writers; and actors' strikes have been settled, the long-running procedural is all set for a shortened spring season. But it'll be short a cast member since Jeffrey Donovan has parted ways with the series.
What'll happen next? We have some ideas, but first, let's refresh our memories about what happened last year.
Law & Order Season 22 revamped Cosgrove's character a bit. He displayed a softer side and more of a willingness to listen. He also experienced the effects of racism firsthand when Shaw got in trouble for standing up to some white cops who assumed he was a criminal because of his skin color.
Cosgrove and Shaw gelled better than Cosgrove and Bernard had, making Cosgrove easier to take. He also had a Stabler-like storyline in which his daughter witnessed a murder and was traumatized.

“CBS wanted to do a murder mystery and they called Dick, who was our ringleader. He said, ‘Ok, I’ll bring the boys,'” Fischer said. “We went over there and pitched a premise called Blacke’s Magic, about a retired magician who solves mysteries. It became...

Like the notion that it’s always 5 p.m. somewhere, there’s nearly always a vintage “Law & Order” airing with do-right Detective Ed Green, played by Jesse L. Martin. So when a new network series arrives with Martin in the lead role, it raises my hopes for must-see TV..
My irrational self wanted to love this intelligent, well-crafted show — but my rational side was beset by doubts, which the first three episodes available for review failed to dispel.
“The Irrational” stars Martin as Alec Mercer, a world-famous behavioral scientist who straddles between academia and more hands-on pursuits. He is a science guy, but not Bill Nye. The show’s title refers to his belief that even in man’s irrational behavior there are detectable motifs. His preternatural ability to discern these patterns make him indispensable in FBI investigations, such as when they have a kidnapper with a gun holding...

Tom Jones, who wrote the book and lyrics for the musical The Fantasticks, the longest-running musical in theater history, has died. He was 95.
He died Friday at his home in Sharon, Connecticut, following a battle with cancer, his son Michael told The New York Times.
Born Feb. 17, 1928, in Littlefield, Texas, Jones studied drama at the University of Texas in 1945 and met his longtime collaborator, Harvey Schmidt. After getting a master’s degree several years later, he and Schmidt were drafted during the Korean War.
Following his time in the service, Jones moved to New York to begin his career in theater. One of his first opportunities included working with composer John Donald Robb. He and Robb also developed the musical Joy Comes to Deadhorse, loosely based on Edmond Rostand’s 1894 play Les Romanesques. But the two ended up going their separate ways due to creative differences, and Jones continued to work on the musical.

Tom Jones, who wrote the book and lyrics for the musical “The Fantasticks” that ran for 42 years, died on Friday at his home in Sharon, Conn. He was 95 and passed from cancer, his son said.
The Fantasticks opened in 1960 in Greenwich Village and is best remembered for its opening song, “Try to Remember.”
Jones started his theater career in New York writing for the revues being staged by the impresario Julius Monk, working with another composer, John Donald Robb.
Jones and Robb called that show “Joy Comes to Deadhorse,” and in 1956, they staged it at the University of New Mexico, where Robb was a dean. The two had a falling out over what worked and what didn’t in the production, and Jones turned to collaborating with friend Harvey Schmidt.
Jones kept working on the piece with Schmidt that was originally devised with Robb. In 1959, when a friend was looking...

When you consider the evidence, the 1970s was the greatest crime movie period since the 1930s. Maybe it’s because of the grim film stock, but those 10 years were so filled with the criminal element even a highly-rated political journalism feature like All the President’s Men (1976) is really an investigation into indictable acts. The decade is defined by Francis Ford Coppola’s first two The Godfather movies, but those tell the story of the dons who live in compounds on Long Island. Most illicit infractions are committed on the street, and so many fall between the cracks.
Crime and gangster movies historically and consistently break boundaries in motion picture art. This is especially true when independent filmmakers muscle their way in packing something heavy. The 1970s was an experimental decade for motion pictures with wildly varied visions behind the lens. Some of these films were considered old-fashioned, others have proven...
