Producer Lynette Howell Taylor has been elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy announced on Thursday.
Howell Taylor was elected by the AMPAS Board of Governors to replace Janet Yang. Academy presidents are permitted to serve four consecutive one-year terms, but the president must be member of the board, and term limits restrict governors to two consecutive three-year terms. Yang has served three years as president but must leave the board this summer because of those term limits.
As incoming president, Howell Taylor will face the same term limits. She began her second consecutive term in 2023 and will have to leave the board next summer, after only one year as president. Of the last seven Academy presidents, only one was able to serve the full four terms.

Just as summer is nearing its end, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences readies for some of its biggest events of awards season, including the Academy Museum Gala, the Governors Awards, and eventually the 98th Oscars in March 2026, the organization’s Board of Governors has elected Oscar-nominated producer Lynette Howell Taylor as its new president.
“Lynette has been a vital part of the Academy Board of Governors for many years, most recently revitalizing our awards work as chair of the board’s Awards Committee. I so look forward to working with her as our new Academy President, as well as with these incredibly dedicated and strategic board officers. This is an exceptional group of Academy members who will advance the Academy’s mission, support our membership around the world, ensure our long-term financial stability, and celebrate the achievements of the global filmmaking community,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer via statement.

As The Hollywood Reporter recently forecasted, Lynette Howell Taylor, an Oscar-nominated film producer, was elected the 37th president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences through a vote of the organization’s board of governors on Thursday. She succeeds Janet Yang, a fellow producer who held the job for the past three years, but was forced by term limits to step away from the board for at least the next two.
Howell Taylor, 46, who was born in Liverpool, England, is the youngest person in 70 years (since George Seaton took office at 44) and the first person born outside of the U.S. in 28 years (since Canadian Arthur Hiller) to serve as Academy president.
Five other governors were also tapped for officer positions: composer Lesley Barber was re-elected as vice president (chair, membership committee); producer Jennifer Fox was elected vice president (chair, awards committee); documentarian Simon Kilmurry was elected vice president/treasurer (chair,...

The pressure of the stage is a universal truth, a crucible where art is forged in ego, ambition, and quiet desperation. The tradition stretches from the amphitheatres of Greece to the boards of the Globe and into every regional playhouse today.
Et Tu places this timeless conflict within a modern American theater, transforming a production of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar into the backdrop for a darkly comedic psychological spiral. The film centers on Brent, a director portrayed with simmering intensity by Lou Diamond Phillips, who finds himself pushed to his professional and mental limits by a hopelessly flawed cast.
His solution to the problem is both shocking and grimly logical within the movie’s satirical world: if the actors cannot be fixed, they must be removed. The story posits that the old theatrical warning, “the show must go on,” is not merely a statement of resilience but a command that might demand a blood sacrifice.

Fresh off the release of his found footage film, Found Footage: The Making of the Patterson Project, writer and director Max Tzannes has another film hitting VOD this summer: Et Tu, a horror comedy about the hells of local theater.
In the film:
Brent (Phillips) is not a happy director. For weeks, he’s had to watch an awful play – his awful play. Adding insult to injury, he’s convinced his wife is having an affair with his idiot leading man. Fortunately for Brent, the theater’s Janitor (McDowell) has been mopping the stage long enough to know a dark secret that may help rid him of his troubles. That is, so long as he’s willing to get some blood on his hands.
In our exclusive clip, Brent confronts his leading man, knife in hand…

After breaking out as a star thanks to his iconic turn as Ritchie Valens in the biopic La Bamba, Lou Diamond Phillips was everywhere. He joined forces with Edward James Olmos for the acclaimed Stand and Deliver, was part of a stacked ensemble with Brat Pack member Emilio Estevez for Young Guns, and would even go on to earn acclaim on-stage with a Broadway adaptation of The King and I. Among his most memorable performances, though, was his appearance in the 1996 war thriller Courage Under Fire, starring the legendary Denzel Washington as an army officer responsible for a deadly case of friendly fire. However, despite having earned Golden Globe and Tony nominations, he wasn't originally a shoo-in for the role of Staff Sergeant John Monfriez.

In the past two years, Kiefer Sutherland has gotten the chance to work with two legendary directors at the tail end of their careers. 2023 saw him collaborate with late Exorcist helmer William Friedkin on what would be his final film, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, in the role of the unstable Lieutenant Commander Queeg. After that, he'd then be picked by Clint Eastwood for a smaller role in his 2024 legal thriller, Juror #2, starring Nicholas Hoult. Though not completely confirmed to be Eastwood's final project, at 95 years old, he's unlikely to have many more turns in the director's chair. The prospect that the Million Dollar Baby Oscar winner might retire, however, was what drove Sutherland to pursue what could be his last opportunity to work with one of his idols with a letter and a bit of gratitude.

In 2011, Vincent Grashaw scored. With his friends in the Coatwolf filmmaking collective, he produced the ultra-low-budget “Bellflower.” It was a breakout hit in Sundance’s Next section and Oscilloscope Laboratories snapped up the gritty, handmade portrait of toxic love and self-destruction less than a week after its premiere.
“That was when [Oscilloscope co-founder] Adam Yauch was still alive and [A24 co-founder] David Fenkel was still there,” Grashaw said. “The year we were at Sundance, I want to say 30 films sold. It was crazy.”
Being a festival breakout kicked off his career, providing access to a network of agents, managers, and general meetings.
It didn’t do a damn thing to get a movie made.
He laughed. “I don’t think I ever had somebody say yes to a pitch. I feel like in a weird way, I’m outside of the business compared to what I was back then.”

"For the good of the theatre..." Buffalo 8 has revealed an official trailer for an indie dark comedy called Et Tu, a reference to the classic line "Et tu, Brute?" from Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar. The film is the first feature film directed by Max Tzannes, and it premiered back in 2023 at the Heartland Film Festival. After making this, he went on to direct the meta bigfoot movie Found Footage: Patterson Project. Both films are just now releasing back-to-back this summer. With an 88% Rotten Tomatoes score and six gritty seasons under its belt, Katee Sackhoff’s Longmire is the Western gem Netflix fans keep sleeping on. Before Yellowstone roped everyone in with cowboy drama and power plays, Longmire was already serving up small-town justice, dusty standoffs, and brooding sheriffs with emotional baggage.
It might not have Dutton-level branding, but if you’re craving frontier tension without the soap, Longmire is Netflix’s low-key answer to Taylor Sheridan’s empire minus the ranch politics, but just as much grit.

When Christian Slater made his purported "comeback" on Mr. Robot in 2015, winning a Golden Globe for the eponymous role, he didn’t think he had gone anywhere. He had been steadily working onscreen for 30 years, since his film debut in 1985’s The Legend of Billie Jean.
Sure, most of the films and television series he made over the first decade-plus of the 2000s weren’t smash hits out of the gate, but neither were many of what would ultimately be his most memorable projects. Heathers, Pump Up the Volume, True Romance, Very Bad Things — all box-office failures-turned-cult classics.
The fact that Slater has so few blockbusters on his résumé (his highest-grossing movie is 1991’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves) yet has remained such a beloved figure in Hollywood for 40 years now is a testament to his both his undeniable talent and enduring appeal. He just has a presence that’s unforgettable.

I was only about 7 years old when I first watched writer/director Robert Resnikoff’s 1990 supernatural horror thriller The First Power – and as you might imagine, the things that movie had to show me shook my world and creeped the hell out of me. I loved it! I have counted The First Power as one of my favorites ever since, so it’s very cool to see that it has finally been given the novelization treatment, courtesy of Christian Francis. Hard copies of The First Power novelization can be purchased at This Link, and the Kindle edition is available Here.
Here’s the description: Based on the original screenplay, this novel delivers the high-stakes action, horror, and supernatural tension that made the film unforgettable. Detective Russell Logan thought he had ended Patrick Channing’s reign of terror. The serial killer was caught, sentenced to death, and executed. But some killers don’t stay dead.

War movies have always been a controversial topic in Hollywood, particularly due to the politics surrounding them. Most filmmakers tend to stay away from them, while others try to stick to World War I or World War II-related films. The post-WW2 war movies mostly deal with the American soldiers fighting the wars in other countries, which is a controversial topic in itself.
Over the years, filmmakers have tackled topics like the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, the war on drugs in the bordering countries, and the presence of the US forces in Afghanistan. These films often explore the moral ambiguity and the dehumanizing nature of such wars. Some films explore the physical and mental toll that wars have on the soldiers. Here are some of the best films tackling these issues.

With today's announcement of the Tony Awards nominations, Daniel Dae Kim has made history as the first Aapi nominee in the Lead Actor in a Play category. Kim was recognized for his performance in the revival of Yellow Face, where he plays a satirical version of playwright David Henry Hwang. Kim's nomination is also part of a record-setting year for Asian representation at the Tonys.
Bd Wong was the first actor of Asian descent to score a Tony. Coincidentally, his 1988 win for Featured Actor in a Play came courtesy of another Hwang play, M. Butterfly. One of the most successful creative minds working in television today is writer and producer Taylor Sheridan, whose shows consistently have won critics and audiences alike. In 2024, Sheridan teamed up with Christian Wallace to create the hit show "Landman," inspired by Wallace's podcast series "Boomtown." Billy Bob Thornton leads an all-star cast as Tommy Norris, a petroleum landman, someone who scouts and brokers deals for natural resource rights on behalf of an oil company. Set primarily in West Texas, Norris' life comes under scrutiny after being forced to deal with a local cartel.
Fortunately, while fans wait for new episodes of "Landman," there are plenty of thematically similar shows to check out next. Several on this list are also created and produced by Sheridan, while they all feature mature characters dealing with life-and-death issues, often with a criminal element involved. Back in 1949 / ’50, a man called Brushy Bill Roberts claimed to be the legendary Wild West outlaw known as Billy the Kid, having reached the age of 90. There was a lot of evidence to back up his claim and he had the support of people who were known to have associated with Billy the Kid, but the authorities discredited him. One person who believes that Brushy Bill Roberts was Billy the Kid is Emilio Estevez, who played Billy the Kid in the 1988 Western Young Guns and its 1990 sequel Young Guns II (where he also put on old age makeup to play a couple scenes as Brushy Bill). That’s how Estevez is able to move forward with Young Guns 3: Dead or Alive, a project he has been developing with John Fusco, the writer of the Young Guns films, since 2019. Last month, it was confirmed that Young Guns 3 has secured a...

Watch the Trailer for M3GAN 2.0: "The murderous doll who captivated pop culture in 2023 is back. And this time she’s not alone.
The original creative team behind that phenomenon—led by horror titans James Wan for Atomic Monster, Jason Blum for Blumhouse and director Gerard Johnstone—reboot an all-new wild chapter in A.I. mayhem with M3GAN 2.0.
Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules.
Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia, the ultimate killer infiltration spy.

A lot can be learned through Roger Ebert’s reviews. Some even consider his four-star system to be a cinematic bible of sorts. That could very well be the truth, considering the man is the first film critic to win a Pulitzer Prize award and has examined over 10,000 films in his professional career, whether they were downright abysmal or perfect. While he tried his best to stray away from “terrible” movies, there were plenty more out there that he let float just above the waters of the theatrical abyss with a score of one.

In the 2010s, the success of Arrow resulted in a Flash spinoff series and eventually the entire Arrowverse. Despite being its spiritual successor, Smallvillenever went down this path. However, it wasn't for a lack of trying, and as recently as two years ago, there was still interest in reviving the beloved Superman series.
Smallville was a smash hit that lasted 10 seasons, but none of its potential spinoffs even got a single season. Only one of the conceptualized spinoffs even had a pilot produced, even after the CW drama went out of its way to include multiple backdoor pilots. Every proposed spinoff would have starred at least one iconic DC hero, and with fans having only recently learned about some of them, it's possible there are still pitches that haven't been unveiled.
Aquaman Had a Full Pilot Produced
Arthur "AC" Curry, Aka Aquaman, made his debut on Smallville in Season 5, Episode 4, "Aqua.

Prepare for chaos as Steven C. Miller’s Werewolves brings an adrenaline-fueled blend of action and horror to digital platforms from 13 January, with a DVD release to follow on 3 February. Starring Frank Grillo (The Grey), Katrina Law (Arrow), and Lou Diamond Phillips (Courage Under Fire), this nail-biting film pits humanity against an uncontrollable force of nature unleashed during a supermoon.
Set in a world where moonlight on a supermoon triggers a horrifying transformation in humans, turning them into ravenous werewolves for one night, Werewolves explores a global crisis through the eyes of former marine Wesley Marshall (Grillo). Leading a rapid response team, Marshall must join forces with scientists Dr. Aranda (Phillips) and Dr. Amy Chen (Law) to find a cure before the cycle of destruction spirals out of control. In “Get Fast,” a 2024 action crime film, viewers are thrown into a frenzy of heists and fast-paced chase scenes. This is a follow-up to James Clayton’s “Bullet Proof.” It explores loyalty among crooks and is filled with absurdity and humor, like a fun action movie with lots of crazy moments.
“Get Fast” is a commentary on the human situation, going beyond mere adrenaline-fueled escape. The narrative reflects historical figures who straddle the line between heroism and villainy. The Cowboy (Phillips) embodies the endearing rogue archetype, diverting our attention away from the violence that lies dormant behind his charisma.
The humor in the film serves as a coping strategy for the chaos. Offering a mirror to our social choices is a time obsessed with instant gratification. “Get Fast” challenges viewers to question their role in the craziness of today’s thrill-seeking world. The motto, “Get fast, get gone,” encapsulates a...

Two years have gone by since we heard that director Steven C. Miller (Silent Night) was heading into production on a werewolf horror film that, at the time, was going by the title Year 2. Last month, the film was given a wide theatrical release in the United States under the title Werewolves – and over the holidays, it was also given a VOD release. Now, we have learned that Werewolves will be reaching Blu-ray on February 4th, and copies are available for pre-order at This Link!
The Blu-ray release will have deleted scenes and trailers as special features.
Starring Frank Grillo of the Purge and Captain America franchises, Werewolves shows us that a supermoon event triggered a latent gene in every human on the planet, turning anyone who entered the moonlight into a werewolf for that one night.
