Why Cujo's Lead Star Demanded A Different Ending For The Stephen King Adaptation
Image
Stephen King's 1981 novel "Cujo" is about a Saint Bernard dog that contract rabies from a bat and goes on a killing spree. The dog, Cujo, belonged to an abusive mechanic, so it was already seemingly predisposed to violence. It mauls several people throughout the course of the story. The novel climaxes with a local mom named Donna Trenton and her young son Tad becoming trapped in a Ford Pinto on a hot day as Cujo stalks them from outside. There comes a moment when Donna has to choose to stay in the car and risk dying of heat stroke ... or exiting the car and facing the killer dog.

In the book, Donna successfully fights off Cujo with a baseball bat, beating the dog and stabbing it to death with a shard when the bat breaks. Tad, sadly, does not survive the ordeal, dying of heatstroke in the Pinto.

'Cujo' Star Reveals Stephen King's Reaction to the Movie's Ending After It Was Changed
Image
When you think about Stephen King movies from the 1980s, there are a few classics that immediately come to mind. The Shining, Stand By Me, The Dead Zone, and, of course, 1983's Cujo. Directed by Lewis Teague, who can forget the horrifying tale of a rabid St. Bernard terrorizing a mother and her son trapped in a Ford Pinto on a blistering-hot summer day? Both the book and the movie managed to strike a chord with audiences, not only because of the subject matter, but also because of the way each one ended. Now, star Dee Wallace has revealed King's reaction to the film's conclusion, which was noticeably different from his novel.

Appearing on Still Here Hollywood with Steve Kmetko, Wallace spoke at length about her incredible career, which has included appearances in Steven Spielberg's E.T., The Howling, Rob Zombie's Halloween, and Cujo. Wallace played Donna Trenton in the King film,...

Darren Aronofsky In Talks To Direct New Adaptation Of Stephen King's Cujo For Netflix
Image
We found out last week that a new take on Stephen King's killer dog novel, Cujo, is in the works for Netflix, and the project may have nabbed a somewhat surprising director.

According to Jeff Sneider in his latest newsletter (and since backed up by THR), Darren Aronofsky is in negotiations to helm the movie.

Though some would consider this the filmmaker's first foray into the horror genre, that's certainly debatable. Aronofsky has included horror elements in a number of his previous films, and many would view the likes of Mother!, Black Swan, and even Requiem for a Dream to be full-on horror movies.

King's novel focuses on a mother and her young seizer-prone son being terrorized by a huge St. Bernard who becomes a rabid killing machine after being bitten by a bat.

Cujo was previously adapted for the big screen back in 1983, with Lewis Teague directing from...

Darren Aronofsky in Talks To Direct Stephen King 'Cujo' Adaptation
Image
It was reported last week that Netflix closed a deal with producer Roy Lee to bring a new adaptation of Stephen King's 1981 novel Cujo to life, and now it appears as if a director not named Mike Flanagan is close to signing a deal to helm the project. Cujo is, of course, the beloved survival horror novel about a rabid St. Bernard that goes on a terror through the town of Castle Rock, focusing mainly on a woman and her son who are trapped in a car under the blazing hot sun.

Per The InSneider, Requiem for a Dream director Darren Aronofsky is in negotiations to close a deal that will see him direct the new Netflix adaptation of Cuju. Aronosfky's previous work not only includes the aforementioned psychological drama, but the Academy Award-winning films Black Swan and The Whale, as well as the sci-fi romance The Fountain, and 2008's The Wrestler,...

Image
Stephen King’s killer dog classic Cujo is headed back to the screen with a new adaptation in the works from Netflix, we learned last week, and the film’s director may have been found.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms a scoop from Jeff Sneider this week, reporting that Oscar-nominated filmmaker Darren Aronofsky is in talks to direct Stephen King’s Cujo for Netflix.

THR notes in their report this afternoon, “The feature project was only revealed last week but it’s clearly further along than known or moving on the fast track.”

Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

Roy Lee (It) is producing the new adaptation of Cujo for the streamer.

Darren Aronofsky in Talks to Direct Netflix’s ‘Cujo’
Image
Darren Aronofsky is circling Netflix’s “Cujo,” a remake of Stephen King’s horror novel about a bloodthirsty St. Bernard.

“Cujo” remains in early stages of development and Aronofsky has yet to have a creative meeting with Netflix, according to sources familiar with the project. Should the deal close, the film would mark Aronofsky’s first feature for a streaming service.

Although occasionally courted by Hollywood (he was an early contender to reboot “Batman” before Christopher Nolan took over), Aronofsky has mostly stayed true to his indie roots. The filmmaker has directed such films as psychological drama “Requiem for a Dream,” psychological thriller “Black Swan,” psychological horror allegory “Mother!” and psychological case study “The Whale.” He’s currently putting the finishing touches on Sony’s “Caught Stealing,” a crime drama with Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz that opens in theaters this August.

Roy Lee (“Barbarian”) will produce the “Cujo” reboot,...

Darren Aronofsky in talks to direct the Cujo remake
Image
There have been rumblings of a remake of the classic Stephen King adaptation Cujo for a long time – in fact, one was officially announced way back in 2013. In 2015, we heard that the remake had taken an unexpected turn, reimagining the name Cujo as an acronym that stood for Canine Unit Joint Operations. That project seemed to be scrapped when King got the rights to the story back in 2017… But last week, we learned that the Cujo remake has found a new home: the Netflix streaming service. And now, industry scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider reports that a director might be close to signing on to the project, as Darren Aronofsky is said to be in negotiations to take the helm.

Aronofsky’s previous directorial efforts include Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, Black Swan, Noah, mother!, and The Whale.

That project seemed to be scrapped when King got the rights to the story back in 2017… But now, the Cujo remake has found a new home.

Deadline reports that Netflix has secured a deal to make a new feature film based on King’s 1981 novel Cujo. Roy Lee, who has previously produced the King adaptations Salem’s Lot (2024), The Stand (2020 – 2021), Doctor Sleep (2019), It (2017), and It Chapter Two (2019), will be producing the film. Now, the search is on for a writer.

Cujo is the story of a large, playful St. Bernard dog that is transformed into a hideous killing machine after being infected by rabies.

Roy Lee (“Barbarian”) will produce “Cujo,” which is currently out to writers.

King’s original 1981 novel centers on a mother and son, who are trapped in a hot car, being terrorized by a rabid 200-lbs. St. Bernard. As time ticks on, it becomes clear that they will die unless they do something.

10 Best Movies Set In Maine, Ranked
Image
Most filmgoers recognize big cities like Miami, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles in their favorite motion pictures. Sure enough, those locals provide the backdrop to several classic pictures from Michael Bay's "Bad Boys" to "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "King Kong" and Michael Mann's "Heat."  However, another prominent locale exists in the film world, a place you've likely seen more often than not, even if it didn't immediately stand out. We're talking, of course, about the state of Maine.

Uniquely, many stories take place in the Pine Tree State. Its lush scenery and coastal views make for stunning cinematography, while the colder elements provide the necessary bleakness for heavier dramas. Here, family friendly fare like "Casper" and "Pete's Dragon" took flight, while more intense films such as the alligator thriller "Lake Placid" and the Stephen King horror tale "Pet Sematary" found unique ways to scare the bejesus out of audiences.

Judith Light Addresses Who's the Boss? Reboot's Fate and Possible Return as Angela Bower
Image
The classic sitcom, Whos the Boss?, ran from 1984-1992, and there had been talks about reviving the show on Amazon Freevee. One of its stars, Judith Light, who played advertising executive Angela Bower in all 196 episodes of the series, told Variety shed be delighted if the series moved forward with another streamer or network.

I would be delighted, Light said. But in terms of where I am and the workload that I have right now, I dont know what my availability would be. When I started my career, I said Id never do a soap opera and Id never do a sitcom. Well, I did both those things. Then I said I would never marry an actor. And I did just that. So, I learned to never say never.

I would be delighted [to return].

Light is married to actor Robert Desiderio, who starred in the ABC soap opera One Life to Live opposite Light.

Judith Light Weighs In on Alyssa Milano's Plans for Who's the Boss Reboot
Image
Although plans for a Who's the Boss reboot were recently scrapped, Judith Light would still be open to revisiting the popular 1980s sitcom. However, there is one small catch.

Light would only consider reprising her role as Angela Bower after the show is well into development. So when MovieWeb, asked her about signing up for the reboot, the actor offered a matter-of-fact response. "You know what? I don't know how to answer that question, because I don't know where they are in their own journey and their process of putting it together, so when it's further along, then we could talk about it again," she explained. "But I certainly loved my time, and I love my Tony Danza," she added.

Judith Light Comments on Who's the Boss Reboot from Alyssa Milano
Image
Just over 40 years ago, on Sep. 20, 1984, Who's the Boss debuted on television and introduced audiences to Tony Danza, Alyssa Milano, and Judith Light's lovable characters, who would stick around for eight seasons. While it was certainly goofy in a specifically '80s-coded way, the series was surprisingly progressive in how it handled class and gender issues, kind of like a post-'70s Mary Tyler Moore show. This is partly why Alyssa Milano has been trying to develop and find a home for a reboot of Who's the Boss for several years. She told Entertainment Tonight:

Who's the Boss? was the first thing where really there was a swapping of gender roles, right? Tony was doing all the housekeeping and Judith was divorced, owned her own business, single mother, all those things that we didn't really see at that time... And a daughter who is very much a tomboy.

Is ‘Who’s The Boss?’ Sequel Moving Forward?
Image
Who’s the Boss? is a classic sitcom that lasted for eight seasons, from 1984 to 1992. There had been interest in bringing back the characters with a new sequel series. However, the production has just received an important update. Interestingly enough, there had been other attempts to give the series a spin-off over the years.

The Project Had Been In Development Since 2020

The original series starred Tony Danza as Tony Micelli, a baseball player who becomes a housekeeper for advertising exec Angela, played by Judith Light. Alyssa Milano played Tony’s daughter Samantha while Danny Pintauro played Angela’s son Jonathan. Katherine Helmond also played Angela’s mother Mona, who many fans joked was the real “boss” of the show.

Interest in developing a Who’s The Boss? revival first became known in 2020, with the project going to Amazon Freevee. Danza and Milano were notably set to reprise their roles from...

Alyssa Milano Recalls ‘Who’s the Boss?’ Writers Making “Sam’s First Bra” Episode After She Started Growing Breasts
Image
As Alyssa Milano came of age on Who’s the Boss?, her breakout role turned out to be a case of art imitating life.

Marking the ABC sitcom’s 40th anniversary, the former child star recently recalled how her preteen character Samantha Micelli was largely inspired by her own childhood, including when she “started developing breasts.”

The 7 Best Stephen King Movies, According To Stephen King
Image
There have been Stephen King movies almost as long as there have been Stephen King books. King's first novel "Carrie" hit bookshelves in 1974, and by 1976, a film adaptation from director Brian De Palma was in theaters. While there are a few outliers, the vast majority of King's novels and a good chunk of his short stories have been adapted to the screen. And over the years, folks have asked King to comment on his favorites. The titles seem to change from time to time, but in 2014, King sat down for an all-encompassing interview with Rolling Stone, and during the course of the interview, he was asked to name the "best movie ever made" from one of his books. In turn, King provided a brief list of what he considers to be his favorite movie adaptations. A few years later, he added one more title to that list. So here are the best Stephen King movies,...

The '80s Best TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Building on the success of television and sitcoms in the 1970s, the 1980s featured some of the greatest television shows to ever grace screens. The focus was often on family, be it traditional or found families, like in Who's the Boss and The Golden Girls. As the number of viewers began to rise exponentially during the decade, there were plenty of shows on the airwaves that still resonate nostalgically today.

There were a number of shows from the 1980s that began to challenge the formula of shows from the 1960s and 1970s. The King of 1983: ‘Cujo,’ ‘The Dead Zone’ and ‘Christine’ at 40
Image
By 1983, Stephen King had rocketed to the top of the publishing world within a fairly short period of time. His first novel, Carrie, had been published only nine years before but he was already considered the modern master of the horror novel. The adaptations of his work, Brian DePalma’s Carrie (1976), Tobe Hooper’s TV movie Salem’s Lot (1979), and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980) had only served to feed the fires of his popularity. King had become a cottage industry by the third year of the new decade and the three films based on his work released that year remain among the best connected to his name while exploring some of the greatest issues he grappled with in the early years of his career.

The current preoccupations of a creator so often seep into their work, consciously or unconsciously. In Cujo, The Dead Zone, and Christine, King explores the creative process,...

The 15 Best Stephen King Movie Adaptations
Image
In a career so far spanning 50 years, Stephen King has published 65 novels (with a 66th imminent) and more than 200 short stories. His books have sold more than 400 million copies worldwide, and have been regularly snapped up for film and TV adaptation. As a brand name, King is almost as prolific on screen as in print, with at least 60 movies (not even including the eight sequels to Children Of The Corn) and 50 shows to date, with more always incoming.

Cinematically, however, while some of the author’s adaptations are clear-eyed classics, the King association has not always been a guarantee of quality. In the early days, the gold rush to mine his back catalogue yielded more turkeys than treasure. So, with Rob Savage out this week (based on a 1973 short story in King’s _Night Shift collection), Empire have put together a list of the 15 greatest big-screen versions of the legendary scribe’s stories.

Tony Danza to Play Himself in And Just Like That Season 2
Image
And Just Like That season 2 has cast sitcom icon Tony Danza as himself. The Emmy-nominated actor has been a beloved part of the fabric of the American television landscape for many years. His career kicked off in 1978 when he starred as Tony Banta on Taxi, on which he appeared for all five seasons through 1983 opposite the show's other main cast members including Judd Hirsch, Danny DeVito, Marilu Henner, and Andy Kaufman. Almost immediately after that show went off the air, he began to star in an even more successful sitcom, Who's the Boss, which ran from 1984 through 1992. The series also starred Judith Light, Alyssa Milano, Danny Pintauro. Although it has been in development hell for some time, a Who's the Boss reboot is currently in the works at Freevee, for which Danza is set to return.

Why Stephen King's Original Draft For Cujo Never Made It To The Screen
Cujo (1983)
"It's not a monster, it's just a doggy!" In 1983, film audiences were exposed to one of the scariest dogs ever put to screen: Cujo. In the film based on Stephen King's best-selling novel, a rabies-stricken St. Bernard terrorizes the town of Castle Rock, Maine -- including defenseless mom Donna (Dee Wallace) and her young son Tad (Danny Pintauro). The movie isn't usually counted among the best King adaptations, but it holds a special place in the minds of fans and unsuspecting viewers alike.

The film version of "Cujo" takes some marked detours from the book. But the earliest version of...
