Godzilla 1998 Is Streaming For Free On Tubi
Image
Filmmaker Roland Emmerich’s much-maligned Godzilla (1998) is never going to make any Top 10 lists featuring the King of the Monsters' must-see installments from the film franchise. However, if fans and/or newcomers want to give the movie, which so poorly represents the world’s most famous kaiju, a chance — there will never be a better time to do it. The Matthew Broderick-led Godzilla is now available to stream for free on Tubi.

The main problem with co-writer and director Emmerich’s take on the 71-year-old monster, which is almost too egregious to comprehend, was the way 1998’s Godzilla was inaccurately designed to look more like a dinosaur from Jurassic Park than the all-powerful kaiju. Plus, it didn’t help that Emmerich’s film decided to pull a King Kong (1933) and kill off the ambiguous creature to wrap things up. The flick’s co-writer and producer, Dean Devlin, said in...

March 1 Will Be a Terrible Day for Godzilla Fans
Image
Godzillafans everywhere will get to experience the franchise's most universally loathed feature film courtesy of its new streaming home.

Per Tubi, the completely free streaming platform will be the new home to 1998's Godzilla beginning on March 1. Considering how widely bemoaned the film is, fans might not see this as a good thing, although the addition of 2014's Godzilla to the same streaming service on the very same day is sure to make up for any disappointment they might initially feel.

Godzilla Minus One Director Addresses Meeting with Marvel Studios Boss Kevin Feige
Image
Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki is responsible for one of the most successful modern iterations of the iconic kaiju. Recently, he revealed that he met Marvel head honcho Keving Feige, who had nothing but good things to say about the film and future Godzilla projects.

Per VirtualGorilla, the director made an appearance on a panel at the Tokyo International Film Festival to celebrate Godzillas 70th anniversary. Yamazaki was discussing the reception of Godzilla Minus One overseas, when he mentioned an interaction with the president of Marvel, presumably Kevin Feige. "The president of Marvel told me, 'Wadatsumi!'" Wadatsumi, of course, was the codename for the operation to take out Godzilla. Yamazaki continued, "He told me, 'We're all having meetings every day to see if we can make it happen like that.' I think it's just lip service."

Every Interpretation of Godzilla Ranked
Image
Godzilla has been the undisputed King of the Monsters ever since 1954. Across the span of 38 film appearances, Toho Studios' mascot has received so many different iterations. In some incarnations, the kaiju is a horrific metaphorical symbol of nuclear terror, other times a goofy protector of earth.

The quality of Godzilla's depictions greatly varies, as the kaiju has appeared in a series of films ranging from Academy Award-winning, such as the most recent Godzilla Minus One, to critically panned flops like TriStar Pictures failed reboot. As one of the most reinterpreted characters in cinema, Godzilla has come in many different forms, with visions of the iconic monster ranging from laughable to legendary.

TriStar Pictures' Godzilla Disappointed Critics and Fans The First American Incarnation of the Kaiju Was a Monumental Failure

Following the success of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park in 1993, the first Hollywood-produced Godzilla film should have been a surefire hit.

How Multiple Simpsons Actors Ended Up In 1998's Godzilla
Image
One of the more unusual creative choices made for Roland Emmerich's 1998 film "Godzilla" was to make it into, essentially, a comedy. In its structure, "Godzilla" is a straight-up adventure blockbuster, replete with the trappings of city-sized destruction and international mayhem that Emmerich typically handles with such aplomb. In its tone, however, "Godzilla" is light and breezy, and focuses on the human character Nick Tatopoulos (Matthew Broderick) and his relationship with his ex-girlfriend, the aspiring reporter Audrey (Maria Pitillo). Audrey feels stymied in her career by a lascivious, egotistical boss Charles Caiman (Harry Shearer) who implies that he'll give her a promotion in exchange for sexual favors. One might also notice that Caiman's secretary is played by actress Nancy Cartwright.

Insulted and disgusted by Charles, Audrey instead takes to the streets of New York with her cameraman Animal (Hank Azaria) hoping to catch footage of the rampaging iguana monster stalking the streets.

Godzilla 1998 Was a Remake of a Totally Different Film
Image
Japanese film studio Toho allowed Western filmmakers full control over a Godzilla film, eventually resulting in an embarrassing backlash that would force them to reassess their IP. Director Roland Emmerich transformed Godzilla into a more traditional, bland monster that was clearly taking its cues from recent hits like Jurassic Park, rather than the Godzilla canon. The film's financial success was ultimately deceptive, making millions despite the director's "soulless" disregard for the source material.

The 1998 TriStar version of Godzilla has been living down a quarter of a century of bad press. Think of it as Godzilla 2.0, the inevitable result when a beloved, decades-old B-movie staple finally goes Hollywood, for better or worse. That's certainly how the Godzilla IP owners justified it.

With the death of long-time producer Tomoyuki Tanaka, the late '90s marked the end of the "Second cycle" of Godzilla cinema. Eyeing the Western market as prime for a...

Godzilla 1998 Celebrates 25 Years with a Stellar 4K Steelbook Edition
Image
Godzilla was a commercially successful film despite critical backlash, solidifying its resilient legacy as the third-highest-grossing movie of the year. The 25th anniversary 4K Uhd steelbook release of Godzilla offers fans a treasure trove of exclusive content, including behind-the-scenes features and iconic fight scenes. Despite its limitations and missed opportunities, the legacy of Godzilla remains strong, fueling anticipation for untold adventures and the redefined genre it introduced.

In 1998, cinema screens were set ablaze with the cataclysmic roar of an iconic monster, Godzilla, reincarnated in a form bigger and arguably bolder than ever before. Acclaimed director Roland Emmerich, the mastermind behind the sci-fi sensation Independence Day, bestowed upon audiences a revitalized portrayal of Toho's King of the Monsters. This Godzilla took a mammoth stride from its native shores to stamp its authority, and quite literally its footprints, on American soil. 60 Years of Godzilla: A History and Critique of the Greatest Monster Movie Series in Cinema
**Massive spoilers for every Godzilla movie, with the exception of the 2014 reboot, and Mothra follow**

August 6th and 9th, 1945 forever changed the course of history. When the first nuclear bombs were dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, World War II ended, but a new fear was born that dominated the thoughts of all men, women, and children for decades to come. The Cold War, atomic bomb testing, a cartoon turtle telling children to “duck and cover”, and this new technology that had the actual potential to literally end the world changed the perception of what was scary. Art reflects life, so cinema began to capitalize on these fears. Gone were the days of creepy castles, cobwebs, bats, vampires, werewolves, and the other iconic images that ruled genre cinema in film’s earliest decades. Science fiction was larger than ever and giant ants, giant octopi, terror from beyond the stars, and...

Honest 1998 'Godzilla' Trailer: Bueller?
Godzilla (1998)
I don't know if you ever saw the 1998 "Godzilla," but I'll be honest: I had no idea it was this insane a travesty. I knew it was no classic, but the "comic" choices in it were apparently abominations. In this "honest trailer" from Screen Junkies, we learn about Godzilla's halitosis, Matthew Broderick's knowledge of worms, the most embarrassing "French" characters you'll ever see, and the contrived exasperation of one Maria Pitillo.

Chaplin: a little tramp through Charlie's love affairs
Robert Downey Jr sparkles as the British comedy giant but Richard Attenborough's film feels somewhat dutiful around him

Director: Richard Attenborough

Entertainment grade: C+

History grade: B+

Charlie Chaplin was a British comedian who became one of the earliest and greatest stars of Hollywood cinema.

Childhood

The film begins with Chaplin's grim childhood in Victorian London, complete with an absentee father, a mentally ill mother (played by Geraldine Chaplin, the granddaughter of the real thing) and a stint in the workhouse. One night, when his mother sings in a music-hall show, her voice fails. Five-year-old Charlie is brought on to replace her. His precociously adorable performance brings the house down. Much though this rise-to-fame story sounds too good to be true, it is what Chaplin described in his autobiography.

Love

In adulthood, Chaplin is played by Robert Downey Jr. The film makes a big deal of the 19-year-old...

New CBS comedy 'Partners': Did it already air on Fox ... 17 years ago?
We here at Zap2it noticed something a little strange in looking at the resume of TV legend James Burrows ("Taxi," "Cheers," "Friends") Wednesday morning (May 16) following the CBS upfronts announcement of their new 2012-13 lineup: "Partners," a new comedy for which Burrows directed the pilot, is already on his list of credentials -- a sitcom from 1995 also named "Partners."

And there are more similarities than just Burrows as a director. CBS describes "Partners" as "two life-long best friends and business partners whose 'bromance' is tested when one of them is engaged to be married." The lead characters (played by David Krumholtz and Michael Urie) are architects, and Krumholtz's fiancee is named Ali.

The 1995-96 comedy from Fox is described as "Best friends Bob and Owen work together as aspiring young architects on the rise, their relationship complicated by Owen's recent engagement to Alicia."

Weird, right? Disappointingly, co-creator David Kohan...

Godzilla Will Live Again | Oh No, There Goes Tokyo
I snapped this one up before Dustin could defile it with his ignorance and disrespect.

Because you must respect Godzilla, (Gojira to the purists among us). The classic Toho films should be a staple, a prerequisite, for all lovers of giant monsters. And frankly, anyone who doesn't love Godzilla is no friend of mine.

Now, of course, I'm not speaking of the retarderiffic Roland Emmerich film of 1998. While it had decent effects, it was one of the most agonizingly painful scripts ever written. Matthew Broderick and Maria Pitillo have no fucking place in a Godzilla movie. Though Jean Reno is welcome in anything.

In any event, Legendary Pictures is gearing up for a new big screen version of our favorite daikaijū. The atomic-breathed monster will be CGI, which makes me a wee bit twitchy, but for the moment, producer Brian Rodgers is saying the right things to try to put...

The Godzilla Remake Gets a Teaser Poster
Godzilla (1998)
Comingsoon.net got their hands on this first teaser poster for the upcoming remake of “Godzilla”. Warner Bros. Pictures is looking at a 2012 release. The last botched attempt at a remake of “Godzilla” by director Roland Emmerich starred Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno, Maria Pitillo, Hank Azaria and Kevin Dunn. Synopsis: Japan is thrown into a panic after several ships explode and are sunk. At first the authorities think its either underwater mines or underwater volcanic activity. The authorities soon head to Odo Island, close to where several of the ships were sunk. One night, something comes onshore and destroys several houses and kills several people. Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla Blu-ray Review
Recently, I reviewed Waterworld. Now I’m talking about 1998’s disaster opus Godzilla. These are two of the biggest flops of the 1990’s. Overhyped and overproduced, and expensive as all get out, perhaps they’re hitting Blu-ray in the hopes of eeking out profits. Someone thought they might have had something here, but when Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin came off of Independence Day, this was going to be the next big thing, but instead they misfired. My review of 1998’s Godzilla after the jump.

Mathew Broderick stars as Dr. Niko Tatopoulos, a scientist who studies the effects of nuclear mutations. He’s brought in by the American government when Godzilla begins fucking things up. At first, Godzilla is outside of Tokyo, but then he comes to New York. Long swim. Emmerich stages everything like ID4, so there’s some moments, but the destruction doesn’t take your breath away.

Godzilla Roars Again!
Legendary Pictures are in the process of resurrecting The most iconic movie monster of all time. With 55 years and 28 movies under his belt, Godzilla could roar once more!

Bloody Disgusting broke the news, in which they confirmed that Legendary Pictures are in early discussions. There are no further details at this point other than the film (provided the green light is given) is likely to be a reboot of the story.

Tristar famously attempted to westernise Godzilla (Gojira) in 1998 with their half-hearted disaster movie directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Matthew Broderick.

While the film was a financial success, taking $379,014,294 globally. However the film was panned by fans and critics alike and found itself the recipient of five Razzie nominations including Worst Picture, Worst Director and Worst Screenplay. It took home two overall for Maria Pitillo as Worst Supporting Actress and for the film as Worst Remake or Sequel.
