Of the three shows that make up the One Chicago franchise, Chicago Med arguably had the best ending last season. We're all dying to know the answer, and soon the puzzle pieces will fall into place with Season 11 scheduled to premiere on Wednesday, October 1. Production for the new season is now underway, as confirmed by star Schram in a social media post. The post, which has sent the fandom buzzing, included a behind-the-scenes selfie featuring actors Luke Mitchell andSteven Weber, who play either of Hannah's potential baby daddies, Mitch Ripley and Dean Archer.

A Terrifying 1995 Thriller Based On A True Story Marked The End Of An Era For HBO
Image
When HBO first launched way back in 1972, it wasn't seen as a very big deal. Pay cable TV networks were still uncommon at the time, and they weren't very profitable. The idea behind pay-tv is common now -- pay a subscription fee for access to high-end sporting events and uncensored, ad-free Hollywood movies -- but at the time, it was seen as an extravagance. It certainly didn't help that movie theater owners and major TV networks heavily campaigned against networks like HBO, which they saw as a minor threat.

HBO used modern tech to innovate, however -- they were one of the earlier networks to make use of geostationary satellites -- and their influence began to grow. In 1975, they broadcasted their fist exclusive standup special (featuring Robert Klein), leading to a cottage industry of standup comedy broadcasts (which lasts to this day). This increased the profile of the HBO brand by leaps and bounds.

23 Years Later, This 95% Rotten Tomatoes Oscar-Winning WWII Epic Is Still a Global Streaming Hit
Image
Adrien Brody recently made headlines for his Oscar-winning performance in The Brutalist, but long before he ever played Lászlo Tóth in the film, he starred in a WWII epic that’s still a streaming hit years later. Brody features alongside Frank Finlay (Othello) and Emilia Fox (Dorian Gray) in The Pianist, the 2002 WWII epic following an acclaimed Polish musician (Brody) who faces various struggles as he loses contact with his family, leading him to hide in the ruins of Warsaw to survive. The Pianist is currently streaming on both Prime Video and Tubi in America, but globally, it’s one of the most popular VOD purchases in countries like Slovenia, among others. The Pianist earned nearly flawless scores of 95% from critics and 96% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $120 million globally against a $35 million budget.

In addition to finding immense critical and financial success, The Pianist was nominated for seven Oscars,...

'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Ebon Moss-Bachrach Gets Honored By The Bear In a Hilarious Fan Edit Video
Image
The Bear is saying "Yes, Chef" to The Fantastic Four: First Steps in the funniest way possible. Before he became Ben Grimm/The Thing in the McU's latest blockbuster hit, Ebon Moss-Bachrach played the once-hated/now fan-favorite character, Richie, in FX's hit culinary drama, The Bear. The film's first trailer already featured a subtle nod to The Bear, with The Thing being shown cooking in The Baxter Building's kitchen. But, with The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Season 4 of The Bear both being resounding successes this year, the studio behind the latter is celebrating Ebon Moss-Bachrach having a gigantic 2026 with the perfect fan edit-style video.

The official Instagram account for FX recently posted a crossover promo for The Fantastic Four: First Steps... and it's perfect. The video features several clips of Moss-Bachrach's character Richie across the show's four seasons. In each clip, Richie makes unintentional references to the actor's new MCU character,...

Despite 85% Rotten Tomatoes Score, ‘The Bear’ Season 4's Viewership Numbers Aren't Looking Good
Image
FX's comedy drama, The Bear, debuted its fourth season on June 25, and not long after, the series was renewed for a fifth season. According to Nielsen, The Bear was the seventh most-streamed title in the U.S. during the week of its fourth season premiere, as it hit an impressive 917 million minutes watched between June 23 to June 29. Despite such a notable tally, it falls short of the series' third installment. The Season 3 premiere of The Bear reached a collosal 1.2 billion minutes within a similar timeframe, with Season 4's numbers showing a drop-off of approximately 24%. The drop perhaps raises questions about the Emmy-winning series' long-term momentum despite critical acclaim.

It is, however, important to put these numbers into context. The Bear has enjoyed a four-season run so far, with a fifth confirmed in early July. Season 3's total of 1.2 billion minutes represents a series high, with Season 2 and Season 1 clocking...

‘The Bear’ Star Responds to Rumors of a Potential Berzatto Family Spin-Off
Image
Season 4 of The Bear premiered on Hulu and shortly after, FX renewed the show for a fifth season. While a renewal is more than welcome, Season 4 has received mixed reviews as far as critics and audiences are concerned. A look at the aggregator website, Rotten Tomatoes, shows that Season 4 currently holds scores of 85% from critics and 69% from audiences, the lowest in the show's history. Despite this, the show was in the news for the right reasons last week as it scored 13 Emmy nominations for its third season, bringing the show's grand total to 49 nominations. Veteran actress, Jamie Lee Curtis, who stars in the series as Donna Berzatto, received her second Emmy nomination for her work as Donna following her win last year.

Curtis will return as part of the cast for The Bear Season 5 alongside series lead, Jeremy Allen White, who plays Carmy Berzatto. Production on Season 5 is already in...

‘The Bear' Star, 29, Gives Exciting Season 5 Update After Recent Renewal
Image
The Bear didn't waste time in scoring yet another season, as the show was officially renewed for Season 5 less than a week after Season 4 premiered on Hulu. The announcement is surely one that has dedicated fans of the show excited, despite the show's latest season dividing critics and audiences more than previous seasons. Season 4 currently holds the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in the show's history, currently sitting at 86% from critics and 69% from audiences. That’s lower than Season 3's ratings and shows a sad decline from Season 1 and 2's ratings, which were in the 90s to 100. Recently, series star Molly Gordon shared an update regarding Season 5, following suggestions that the season could face an unprecedented delay.

Season 4 ended on a shocking note, as Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) decided that stepping away from The Bear was the best thing for his mental health and the strain he was being put through.

Betty White's Cult Classic Creature Feature Is Quietly Dominating Streaming 26 Years Later
Image
Betty White’s career spanned nearly seven decades, and while she is likely most well-known for her role as Rose in The Golden Girls, the five-time Emmy Award-winning actor stole the show in this 1999 creature feature. Now, 26 years later, Lake Placid, starring Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, and Oliver Platt, along with White, is becoming a sleeper hit on streaming.

Per FlixPatrol, Lake Placid is now the No. 7 most-streamed movie on AMC+ as of July 13. The movie from director Steve Miner and writer David E. Kelley is up from the No. 10 spot, which it held on July 5. The movie is ahead of Dark Winds, The Last Anniversary, and Ash, which hold the No. 8, 9, and 10 spots, respectively.

Lake Placid, billed as a dark comedy horror film, also stars Brendan Gleeson as Sheriff Hank Keogh, who, while waiting in a boat on Black Lake in Maine, his colleague and wildlife officer, goes scuba diving.

The Bear Gets a Disappointing Streaming Update Following a Divisive Season 4
Image
After its premiere in 2022, FX's The Bear has turned into one of the most critically acclaimed modern shows. However, even as it snatched even more Primetime Emmy Awards, the dramedy series started dividing critics and audiences, losing its streaming popularity.

The Bear filmed its most recent two seasons back-to-back, and the reaction to them was mixed. Season 3 featured the lowest score from the audience, a negative 52% approval, although Season 4 received a passable note. Even so, The Bear Season 4 was still divisive, and, not even a month later, the series has been struggling in the charts, per FlixPatrol. The average worldwide ranking this week has dropped from 6.9 to 7.8, placing The Bear in seventh place on the Hulu charts, ironically just behind MasterChef in third place and Gordon Ramsey's Secret Service in sixth. On the Disney+ charts, the series is currently in ninth place in the Top 10 TV shows.

Betty White's Underrated Horror 'Lake Placid' Finds Success on Streaming
Image
Long after the late Betty White was a cheesecake-loving golden girl from St. Olaf, she played against type to star in the one and only horror movie of her career as a foul-mouthed widow that stole the show. Chewing up every scene she was in with a string of profanities that would make a sailor blush, her character of Mrs. Delores Bickerman in Lake Placid was from the sweet and innocent Rose Nylund seen in her classic sitcom, and served to further endear White in the hearts of fans. Now, 26 years after its premiere, the film continues to be a crowd-pleaser on streaming.

Also starring the likes of Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Brendan Gleeson, and Oliver Platt, Lake Placid is a tremendously underrated creature feature directed by Steve Miner that focuses on a giant crocodile terrorizing the fictional location of Black Lake, Maine, and the dysfunctional group of police and...

Now, 26 years later, Lake Placid is climbing up the streaming charts, per FlixPatrol.

As of July 5, the movie, which also starred Bridget Fonda, Brendan Gleeson (Spider Noir), Oliver Platt (The Bear), Betty White, and Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: Svu), is sitting in the Number 10 spot in AMC+’s Top 10 Movies in the United States. Image
The Bearhas officially been knocked off the top of the streaming charts.

The Fate of ‘The Bear’ Has Been Decided by FX After Season 4’s Shocking Finale
Image
Even as fans debated whether The Bear was starting to lose its bite, FX has decided to stay in the kitchen. On the heels of The Bear Season 4’s premiere, the network officially announced the hit series has been renewed for a fifth season. The news comes despite the show’s latest installment receiving the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in its history, currently sitting at 80% from critics and a worrying 69% from audiences. That’s a noticeable drop from the show’s flawless 100% runs for Seasons 1 and 2, and even lower than Season 3’s already softening numbers.

But according to FX Chairman John Landgraf, the audience is still showing up:

‘The Bear’ Renewed for Season 5 at FX
Image
FX is saying “Yes chef” to more episodes of “The Bear.” The Emmy darling from Christopher Storer was renewed for Season 5 less than a week after its Season 4 return.

This upcoming season is expected to premiere in 2026. That’s a big deal considering that cast obligations have become a major headache for this FX drama. The Bear Season 4 Family Tree - Every Berzatto Relative & How They're Connected
Image
The Bear Season 4 brings the Berzatto family back into the TV spotlight as one of the most drama-ready families in recent memory. The hit FX on Hulu TV comedy recently returned to the streamer, picking up the story of Jeremy Allen White's Carmy Berzatto, a highly-skilled chef brought back to Chicago after the death of a loved one. Like past seasons, Season 4 expands the scope of the central Berzatto clan, focusing on Carmy's relatives like Jamie Lee Curtis' Donna and Abby Elliott's Natalie, along with those in the family's gravitational pull.

Season 4 of the award-winning series picks up where Season 3 left off. White's reeling chef has put everything he has into a new high-end restaurant in Chicago's downtown core, honoring the legacy of the family business (which was once a greasy spoon Italian Beef joint) while walking in the footsteps of his older brother Mikey (played by The Walking Dead...

‘The Bear’ Review: Season Four Slows Down but Still Finds Time for Some Beef
Image
Almost immediately, The Bear became known for its intensity, baking a story about grief into its rapid-fire depiction of food being made and characters shouting at one another. In retrospect, this version of The Bear more or less ended when Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) got himself locked in a walk-in freezer at the end of season two and seemed to forever drive away his on-again, off-again maybe girlfriend, Claire (Molly Gordon).

In season three, the series condensed much of its characters’ food-fueled acrimony into a charmingly distressing, cameo-filled sixth-episode flashback largely set around the Berzatto family table. Now, a parallel episode from season four, set at a wedding, culminates not with anyone driving a sedan into a living room, but with a daddy-daughter dance.

Like its characters, The Bear is trying to find a mellower way of being. Sure, the new season ends with a shouting match, and the Bear...

'I Don't Want It to End': The Bear Star Comments on Uncertain Future After Season 4
Image
The Bearstar Liza Colón-Zayas opens up about the future of the hit series.

Speaking to Variety, Colón-Zayas responded to questions about the future of The Bear, noting that neither she nor the rest of the cast are sure of the series' trajectory after a fraught Season 4 finale. "We don’t know the change in strategy, with Carmy leaving behind the need to pull off chaos, and sticking with consistency, how that may have affected word of mouth, whoever’s coming in. Maybe that’s the Hail Mary," Colón-Zayas stated. "I honestly don’t know. Is there any Hail Mary that can come through now that that clock has reached zero? I don’t know. I don’t want it to end."

Colón-Zayas went on to explain that she believes her character Tina would be "devastated" by where things left off, explaining that "this isn’t just about a job," for the character.

Why Roland Emmerich's 2012 Spin-Off TV Series Was Canceled
Image
Hollywood loves a winner. In a landscape where some of the most marketable stories are underdogs overcoming the odds, the town still prefers seeing Goliath emerge victorious over and over again. In some cases, a presumed smash puts the cart before the horse, and the people making decisions up top have to recalibrate what their expectations are, especially when they make outsized bets on a property they believed to be a sure thing. "2012" was a very successful addition to the burgeoning portfolio of disaster movies from Roland Emmerich, and the film was a big feather in the cap of Sony Pictures for the year 2009 — a year that might as well be in another universe for how different that theater environment is compared to the one we currently occupy.

Emmerich tabbed John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandiwe Newton, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, Woody Harrelson, and Oliver Platt to be in the gargantuan...

The Bear (Season 4) Recap & Ending Explained: Does Carmy Burn the Restaurant to the Ground or Find a Way to Save It?
Image
The ending of “The Bear” season 4 shows Carmy leaving the restaurant to save it, handing over the reins to Syd and Nat, leaving its fate in the dark. The third season showed him devoting his life to this restaurant by sacrificing everything else he loved. The fourth season shows him doing almost the opposite of that. He tries to mend the bridges he burnt with Claire, his mother, and others, while questioning his passion for food. He wonders: Did he get into the business only to prove his worth to Michael? Was it meant to be a big, resounding ‘f**k you’ to Chef David? Or was it just plain escapism? He introspects without letting anyone get a hint of his thoughts. Classic Carmy, right? Well, the fourth season shows him trying to move past that image.

Carmy tries to make progress while trying to find a footing in his personal and professional life,...

The Bear season 4 episode 9 recap: Carmy goes home
Image
The Bear season 4 episode 9, "Tonnato," begins where episode 8 ended with Carmy knocking on his mother's door to drop off a box of photos.

Donna (Jamie Lee Curtis) answers and asks Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) to stick around for a while to chat. He tries to leave, but his mother basically makes him stay. You can tell Carmy is not ready for this, but it's a long time coming.

Back at The Bear, Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) meets Uncle Jimmy (Oliver Platt) outside in the alley while Computer (Brian Koppelman) meets with Sugar (Abby Elliott) about the fate of the business. They apologize to each other for letting each other down, Uncle Jimmy on the business side and Sydney on the food side of things. He tells her that her mother would be very happy with how Sydney grew up and the chef she became.

At Donna's place, Carmy and his ma look through some old photos.

The Bear season 4 episode 8 recap: Time is running out
Image
Jumping back in after the best episode of the season, The Bear season 4 episode 8, "Green," begins with one of our faves really going through it! Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) is having some serious nightmares about failure. In the dream, she's hosting a cooking show when a storm rips through the set. She tries to keep going, but it's a complete and utter failure.

The dream continues, and Sydney is trying to outrun something. Shortly after she wakes up, we find out what it is. She calls Chef Shapiro and officially drops out of the running for the position. It's not the best phone call, but he puts her on blast. He's actually really rude about it, even if he might be right. I don't know. I still think he's a jerk.

Sydney isn't the only one going through it, though. Marcus (Lionel Boyce), who has been struggling with how to handle...

‘The Bear’ Star Edwin Lee Gibson Had No Idea About Ebra’s Big Twist in Season 4
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “The Bear” Season 4.

Ahead of “The Bear” Season 4, series creator Christopher Storer warned Edwin Lee Gibson that there was a “little surprise” ahead for his character Ebraheim. But it wasn’t until Gibson ran into his co-star Lionel Boyce that he had any idea about what that surprise was.

“I hadn’t read all the scripts yet and Lionel, who plays Marcus, was like ‘Ah, so somebody saves The Bear this season.’ I was like, ‘What are you talking about?'” Gibson told TheWrap.

It’s a twist that’s perfectly fits Storer’s world that values love above all else and celebrates dedication and greatness in the most unlikely places. At the beginning of Season 4, the Chicago Tribune’s nail-biting review of the restaurant comes with one silver lining: as chaotic as the Bear is, the Beef window run by Ebra remains a standout.

‘The Bear’ Season 4 Ending Explained: Who’s Leaving?
Image
Note: The following story contains spoilers from “The Bear” Season 4.

It wouldn’t be a season finale of “The Bear” if there weren’t a few tears and anxiety attacks, and Season 4 certainly delivers on that front.

Last season was a thorny one as Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) kept trying to get her partner and mentor Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) to open up to her. After endless days of changed menus, several screaming matches and oh-so-much money lost, the duo finally had a real conversation at the end of this season.

Here’s what happened in the final moments of Season 4 and what that ending may mean if there is a Season 5.

Is Carmy leaving the Bear?

Eventually. At the end of Episode 9, Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) finally took a look at her new partnership agreement with the restaurant, which contained an unpleasant surprise. As part of her new contract, ownership for...

If I Were the Creator of ‘The Bear,’ I Wouldn’t Highlight What It Has in Common With ‘Groundhog Day’
Image
Warning: contains spoilers from Season Four of The Bear.

Recently, Joy Press of Vanity Fair interviewed John Landgraf, the Chairman of FX Networks. Landgraf has been an executive at the network for over 20 years, in which capacity he’s helped bring inarguably prestigious and impressively diverse shows to air — Shōgun to Atlanta to The Americans to Archer to The Bear, the fourth season of which dropped earlier this week. Though the show has been one of “FX on Hulu”’s biggest critical hits, some viewers (including me) felt like last season just spun its wheels, leaving most of its storylines unresolved in the finale.

When Press asks Landgraf about this, she writes, he “bristles” at the critique before responding, “This is a show about codependency and stuckness and the kinds of substitute obsessions and addictions that people have. … I understand that watching someone not move forward is a lot less...

Here Are All 25 Jokes in the New Season of ‘The Bear’
Image
Warning: contains spoilers from Season 4 of The Bear.

Since its premiere in 2022, The Bear has won two DGA Awards, five Critics’ Choice Awards, five Golden Globes and 21 Emmys — all in comedy categories. In 2024, Jeremy Allen White beat out Matt Berry from What We Do in the Shadows for the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy; at the same ceremony, Liza Colón-Zayas beat Hannah Einbinder from Hacks. The previous year, The Bear was Emmy voters’ choice for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2023, triumphing over shows including Abbott Elementary.

I’m not sure exactly how the Television Academy, which awards the Emmy, defines a comedy, but one thing will be clear if The Bear submits in those categories next year: It’s not based on how funny they are. As proof, here’s every joke — and, because I’m being generous, seemingly intended laugh line — from the show’s just-dropped fourth season.

‘The Bear’ Season 4 Finale Recap: Where Do Carmy and Sydney End Up? Will the Restaurant Survive?
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Season 4 of “The Bear.”

Season 3 of “The Bear” ended at a major crossroads for the title restaurant. Carmy (Jeremy Allen-White) and the crew were anxiously wondering about the contents of their first-ever review, and unbeknownst to anyone else, Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) was having a panic attack due to the weight of the decision ahead of her: Stay at The Bear with the dysfunctional team she loves, or accept a high-paying job offer at a new restaurant led by a more established chef?

By the end of Season 4, those questions are answered, but the future of The Bear remains as unclear as ever.

In Episode 9, “Tonnato,” Pete (Chris Witaske) calls Sydney to go over the updated terms of the partnership agreement she’s procrastinated signing all season. She has finally turned down Adam’s (Adam Shapiro) job offer and decided to stick things out with Carmy,...

The Bear season 4 episode 7 recap: Under the table
Image
The Bear season 4 has been building to this episode, and it's finally here. It's officially time for Tiffany's wedding! And, it's a big family reunion with a bunch of people with a devastating shared history. Let the drama begin!

The Bear season 4 episode 7, "Bears," opens with Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) having a panic attack in the alley outside the wedding venue with Sydney (Ayo Edebiri). She tries to calm him down, but it's clear that he's still quite frustrated, which is putting it mildly, about his relationship with Tiffany (Gillian Jacobs), her getting married to a great guy like Frank (Josh Hartnett), and everything that goes with that.

Brie Larson is Francie Fak

Inside, Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) sees Tiffany, and she gives him permission to bail as soon as he gets uncomfortable from the anxiety of being this close to all these family and friends. It's so triggering! Honestly, I'm...

The Bear Season 4 Review — Bristles with Tension, Chaos, and Heart
Image
While watching The Bear, many may be reminded of that famous Seinfeld episode set in a Chinese restaurant, where nothing ever really happens. While last season felt like an unstructured departure, I still believe The Bear remains an American classic. However, I had hoped the fourth season would bring some structure beneath all its anxiety-inducing chaos.

The first two seasons had clear goals: first, trying to keep the family restaurant afloat; then, reinventing it as a fine-dining destination called The Bear. However, creator Christopher Storer shifts focus, stepping away from linear personal and professional growth to explore character setbacks through a deeply personal lens, examining family dynamics and mental health.

Season four is a cohesive improvement over the third, reinventing itself halfway through to become a story about trauma, grief, anxiety, and the toxic pressure of perfectionism, culminating in an existential crisis no one saw coming.

Hulu’s The Bear...

‘The Bear’ Season 3 Recap: What To Remember Ahead Of Season 4
Image
FX has served up another season of The Bear, which takes place in the competitive world of cooking and hospitality.

Season 3 kicked off with a montage of Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) going to train in New York under the intense Chef David (Joel McHale) and more in New York City with an emotional goodbye from his sister Natalie (Abby Elliott). This opening in the first episode set the tone for Carmy’s continued drive to level up The Bear into a fine dining establishment. The first episode of Season 3 also showed how Carmy, Nat, Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and more dealt with the death of Michael “Mikey” Berzatto that rocked the family and brought Carmy back to Chicago to manage The Beef in Season 1.

Of course, much more happened for the intense chef as well as the rest of the ensemble in the kitchen. Find a refresher of what happened in...

‘The Bear’s Abby Elliott on Natalie’s Season 4 Struggle for Work-Life Balance
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Bear Season 4.] The Bear‘s fourth season has arrived, and with it, more chaos for the Berzatto family, both biological and extended, but there was some sweet levity for Carmy’s (Jeremy Allen White) sister Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto (Abby Elliott), who introduced her baby daughter Sophie to the kitchen crew. Still working to get the titular restaurant on track following Sophie’s arrival, Nat oversees the books and supplies at the same time she’s watching brother Carmy closely to make sure he’s still loving what he’s doing. She’s an ultimate caretaker, but as viewers see in the episodes, Nat is blissful in her family bubble alongside Sophie and husband Pete (Chris Witaske), and the restaurant delivers plenty of challenges after Jimmy (Oliver Platt) informs the team that they need to make a serious turnaround money-wise to keep things open. Season 4 then follows Nat as she...

The Bear Season 4 TV Review: Carmy and crew are back for another intense season of restaurant drama
Image
Plot: Season four of FX’s The Bear finds Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, Sydney Adamu and Richard “Richie” Jerimovich pushing forward, determined not only to survive, but also to take The Bear to the next level. With new challenges around every corner, the team must adapt, adjust and overcome. This season, the pursuit of excellence isn’t just about getting better – it’s about deciding what’s worth holding on to.

Review: The fourth season of The Bear opens with a flashback to Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and Mikey (Jon Bernthal) as the first idea for the titular restaurant came to fruition. In the present day, Carmy awakens to find the Bill Murray classic Groundhog Day playing on his television, hinting at the series’ recurring theme of breaking out of the mundane. With these moments setting the table for the new season, it is immediately apparent that The Bear is returning...

‘The Bear’ Season 4 Review: FX’s Emmy Darling Gets Its Creative Mojo Back, but Not Fast Enough
Image
Note: This review contains spoilers from “The Bear” Season 4.

Let’s start by answering the most important question: yes, “The Bear” Season 4 is better than Season 3.

Once FX’s restaurant dramedy moves on from the self-indulgent stuckness that made Season 3 so un-bear-able, it finds some moments that feel like the best of Seasons 1 and 2. It’s as confident and singular in its artistic vision as ever. But even though more is happening than there was in Season 3, it’s not quite enough to give the show a shape. Its overemphasis on character and vibe at the expense of narrative momentum leaves it repetitive and flabby. Like the Chicago Tribune’s mixed restaurant review says, it’s missing some Bear necessities — namely, a compelling enough plot.

Season 4 picks up in the aftermath of that review. The problematic press will make achieving success even harder for Carmen Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) and...

Dave Nemetz Reviews The Bear: Hulu’s Culinary Dramedy Finds a Recipe That Works in a Resurgent Season 4
Image
Throughout the new season of The Bear, Carmy and his staff are preoccupied with getting a bad review — and that feels kind of meta, doesn’t it?

After a pair of acclaimed seasons, Hulu’s pressure cooker of a dramedy returned last summer for a Season 3 that felt like a letdown, with fans and critics (like me) wondering if The Bear had lost that unique flavor that drew us in. Well, like any good restaurant reviewer, I’ve returned to see if my evaluation holds up, and I’m happy to say that the flavor is back in full force...

‘The Bear’ Review: Season 4 Is Another Sweet, Stirring, and Inconsistent Dish
Image
“Here’s one way to look at it: It’s really fun.”

So says a best-left-unnamed guest star in a best-left-unidentified episode of “The Bear” Season 4, by way of describing time spent with the Berzatto family. And really, our mystery speaker is right. For all the grief given to Christopher Storer and Joanna Calo’s FX restaurant drama after its down year — a succinct and undeniable description that would still spark at least two separate social media feuds — the third season was still just a bit disappointing, not an outright disaster. The second season remains a triumph, and the first season, well, without it, we wouldn’t be here, now would we?

To some sickos out there — the quoted speaker very much included — all of this, everything from fighting over how many awards “The Bear” should win to celebrating the highs and lows of each season, could be looked at as “fun.

Could The Bear Solve Its Problems With This One Crazy Trick?
Image
In the Season Four premiere of The Bear, a lot of steps are taken to contain the chaos that even Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) admits to Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) he doesn’t like. Cicero (Oliver Platt) and his business manager “Computer” (Brian Koppelman) let the chefs, and general manager Sugar (Abby Elliott) know exactly what their financial situation is: The Bear has precisely two months of runway to start turning a profit; a 1,440-minute countdown clock may not decrease anyone’s stress about it, but at least it’s making expectations starkly clear.

Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) has hired the front-of-house staff from Ever, the restaurant where he did his apprenticeship back in Season Two; they’re establishing new kitchen practices to smooth the process. These are fine first steps, but I’m not seeing the one I think could make the greatest difference in the shortest time: Scream Jar.

The Bear season 4 episode 3 recap: Carmy finally rights a wrong
Image
After two great episodes to start the season, The Bear season 4 episode 3 opens with an epic Sydney-throwing-down-montage to "Fast Slow Dance" by St. Vincent. Stylistically, this is The Bear at its best! I love all the arguments as much as the next person, but The Bear does these beautiful montages better than any show on TV right now.

Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) tries the dish Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) just made, and he's in. In fact, he calls it perfect, and he tells her to put it up, meaning it's going on the menu today. While Syd is stoked for the praise, there's something more behind her eyes. It's obviously the guilt of all of those conversations with Shapiro about possibly leaving Carmy and The Bear.

Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) has a phone call with Tiffany (Gillian Jacobs) about their daughter, but when she asks if Richie is coming to the wedding,...

The Bear season 4 episode 1 recap: Carmy faces his toughest test so far
Image
The Bear is officially back for season 4! All 10 episodes of the new season are available to stream on Hulu right now. We just don't know what the names of each episode are yet because Hulu didn't list them. Hopefully, that gets worked out soon!

At the end of The Bear season 3, there were a few big questions left up in the air. Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) was panicking, literally, over her decision to leave Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and the gang at The Bear. Meanwhile, Carm just received an awful review of the new restaurant. He left Cicero (Oliver Platt) hanging, too, after he called a bunch of times.

Well, The Bear season 4 opens with Carm pitching an idea for a restaurant to Michael (Jon Bernthal). At first, Mike isn't interested, but Carm gives a good pitch. He also brings up their father and his favorite restaurant, one of the only...
