Very few of Terry Gilliam's films have been produced without some kind of grievous production problem. Gilliam appears to be cursed, with his films victimized by studio tinkering, bad filming conditions, or the health of his actors. The saga of his "Brazil" is well known to cineastes, and his more recent "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" had to be made twice, after the first version of the film fell through. In 2009, Gilliam released "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," a melancholy nightmare about a mystical closet that travels around in the possession of the titular doctor (Christopher Plummer). Inside the closet is a mystical pocket dimension where surreal dreams are manifested. Dr. Parnassus heads a theater troupe and is immortal, having been tricked by Satan (Tom Waits). Into his company comes the handsome young Tony (Heath Ledger), who may offer salvation. At the very least, Tony offers to spruce...

Some fifteen years ago, when I was but a freshly minted college graduate, I interned at Turner Classic Movies in Atlanta. It was the dream for an avid Old Hollywood fan. Even at 21, I could throw down facts about Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart like someone 70 years my senior. I once had a conversation with TCM patron saint Robert Osborne about Myrna Loy — whom most of you should Google because she was simply sublime. But that’s beside the point.
One of my tasks was to help reorganize their vast library of informational packets on various movies, ready to pull anytime they needed research for the intros/outros on the primetime lineup. Every manilla envelope, stuffed to the brim with photo copies, was meticulously alphabetized. When I got to the “S” section, however, I noticed a curious omission: “The Sound of Music.” I was perplexed. Not only was it a personal fave,...

I love a good revenge flick. While there are some classics—Revenge, Hard Candy, and I Saw the Devil if you’re in the market for some contemporary flair—even the bad ones still target this simple yet innate desire to see justice achieved. Is it often the case in real life? No, not usually, but that’s why I go to the movies. I want to see some poor sap come into his own to avenge whomever it is they’ve lost.

Both in movies and on television, stories set in airplanes — or that are tied to events in an airplane — tend to be thrilling and spark viewers' curiosity. The last hit show that featured an airborne plot was Manifest, a 2018 thriller and mystery series that saw a group of passengers simply disappear mid-flight and land five and a half years later as if no time had passed. In light of its possibility, Peacock quickly added to its catalog a show with a similar potential that was almost equally popular. Now that it's premiered on Netflix, the Canadian series Departure is once again seeing a rise in its popularity.
Depending on how you look at it, Departure can even be considered a sort of "sister" series to Manifest. The story centers around the Tsif (Transport Safety and Investigations Bureau), an entity that investigates and tries to understand the cause of major airline disasters.

The wildly diverse worlds of Star Trek and Quentin Tarantino’s arguably best film, Pulp Fiction, overlapped during the run of Star Trek: Picard. That’s when Amanda Plummer, who played Honey Bunny in Pulp Fiction, portrayed Picard’s season 3’s main antagonist, Vadic. Plummer, the daughter of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country co-star Christopher Plummer, appeared in six episodes as the changeling captain of the Shrike.
But a look at a casting memo written by Tarantino in advance of production on Pulp Fiction reveals that several future and past Star Trek figures were at least considered for roles in the writer-director’s film. Tim Roth ultimately starred as Pumpkin, but among those on Tarantino’s list of potential actors for the role was Christian Slater. Kevin Spacey has secured another award as he continues his efforts to make a comeback. The disgraced actor and director received the Maximo Excellence award at the inaugural Italian Global Series Festival in Riccione, Italy. Spacey's career hit a dramatic halt in 2017 as sexual misconduct allegations began to surface against him. Those allegations led to his highly publicized dismissal from Netflix's critically acclaimed House of Cards, where he had portrayed the lead role of Frank Underwood. He was also replaced in Ridley Scott's film All the Money in the World during post-production, with Christopher Plummer reshooting his scenes.
Since his acquittal on charges in the US in 2022 and in the UK in 2023, Spacey has appeared in several independent features. Among these projects is the 2022 Italian drama L'uomo Che Disegnò Dio (The Man Who Drew God), directed by and starring Franco Nero. This film, based on a true story,...

Michelle Williams Earned Less Than $1K, Mark Wahlberg Made $1.5M (Photo Credit – Instagram)
When All the Money in the World scrambled to recast Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer, Michelle Williams showed up ready to reshoot, for peanuts. Literally.
While Mark Wahlberg made headlines for pocketing $1.5 million for the same last-minute reshoots, Williams earned less than $1,000. That’s right, an $80 per diem. No one told her either.
USA Today broke the news that Williams later admitted she felt “paralyzed in feelings of futility.” She’d been acting since she was 12, a four-time Oscar nominee, and still… “No one cared.” That sting of silence was personal.

On the 50th anniversary of Talking Heads’ first live gig, a music video for “Psycho Killer” has finally been released … and if you know that Saoirse Ronan is starring, and that the prestige helmer is Oscar-nominated director Mike Mills (“C’mon C’mon”), you can probably guess that neither psychosis nor killing will be the actual theme of the visualization. But Ronan is still a “real live wire,” that much is certain, in a video that focuses on a psyche caught up in everyday frustrations and anxieties.
It was “an athletic performance,” Mills tells Variety of Ronan’s work on the two-day shoot earlier this year — clarifying: “an emotionally athletic performance. Saoirse could be totally feral and go so high, and then be so subtle and go there in a very real way with all those emotions. I still don’t quite get how she didn’t just shrivel up at the end.

Netflix has shared a first look at Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third installment of filmmaker Rian Johnson’s franchise. The film will launch on the streaming service on December 12, 2025.
We first met the famed private detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) in 2019’s Knives Out when he was hired to investigate the death of best-selling author Harlan Thrombey. Blanc teamed up with nurse Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas) to uncover the truth in a twisted case filled with angry relatives, red herrings, and fabulous knitwear.
Blanc’s skills were called upon once more in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, when he headed to Greece to peel back the layers of intrigue surrounding tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) and an eclectic group of disruptors.
Blanc was last seen sitting on the beach of Bron’s estate on an idyllic Greek island, calmly pondering the chaotic...

Hollywood has been betting on sequels for decades as they are almost always guaranteed hits, especially after the huge success of a first installment. However, the recipe doesn't always work.
In 2006, two-time Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington starred in Spike Lee's successful, star-studded movie Inside Man. It was a critical and commercial hit, and over a decade later, Inside Out: Most Wanted was released. Although the sequel didn't make a splash, it achieved success on Netflix, debuting in second place in the global streaming charts, per Tudum.
Although this is not Inside Man: Most Wanted's first stint on Netflix, the movie was back in the charts for the week between May 5 and 11. It amassed 12.3 million views and 21.8 million hours viewed, debuting in second place just behind Vince Vaughn's new feel-good comedy Nonnas. The heist film entered the Top 10 in 69 countries, and became the number one film in 21 territories across the globe.

Who out there hasn't stood in line at the bank, looked around at the layout and the guards and the security cameras, and wondered: How could I rob this place and get away with it? I bet some of you have even figured out what kind of masks your crew would wear. It's a fun game to play and maybe that's why we all love a good heist flick. They give us the vicarious thrill of taking part in a masterplan for a few hours and be part of the gang while wondering how exactly they're going to pull it off.

Christopher Plummer not only won an Academy Award, a Tony Award, and an Emmy Award, but he co-starred in one of the most beloved movies of all time and played the villain in both a popular Star Trek feature film and a cult-favorite Star Wars knock-off. He also had several other interesting Star Trek connections.
Plummer, who died in 2021 at the age of 91, won his Oscar for his supporting performance in Beginners (2011), in which he co-starred opposite Star Wars actor Ewan McGregor. He took home two Emmys in his long career, one for Arthur Hailey’s the Moneychangers in 1977 (Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie) and the other for Madeline in 1994 (Outstanding Voice-Over Performance). And he earned two Tonys as well, one for Cyrano in 1974 (Best Actor in a Musical) and another for Barrymore in 1997 (Best Actor in a Play). As for the movie we described as...

Director Philip Saville's biblical feature "The Gospel of John" (2003), narrated by Christopher Plummer, was adapted for the screen on a word-for-word basis from the American Bible Society's 'Good News Bible', in a three-hour epic that follows 'John's Gospel' without additions to the story, or omission of complex passages:
"...the film was created by a group of professionals from Canada and the UK, along with academic and theological consultants from around the world...
"...with a cast selected primarily from the 'Stratford Shakespeare Festival', 'Soulpepper Theatre' Company, plus Britain's 'Royal Shakespeare Company' and 'Royal National Theatre'. The musical score, composed by Jeff Danna, and created for the film, is based on the music of the Biblical period..."

In all of Tony Awards history, there has never once been a season in which three performers have been nominated for Best Actor in a Play for Shakespearean roles. That could very well change this year, as both Othello and Romeo and Juliet were revived this season boasting three major stars: Jake Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington in the former, and Kit Connor in the latter. If all three receive nominations, it would mark a historic first.
Othello is the rare drama that features two lead actors, as the title role (Washington) and that of his junior officer Iago (Gyllenhaal) predominate the proceedings. Indeed, Christopher Plummer was nominated in the lead category for playing Iago back in 1982. As of this writing, Gold Derby's odds predict the Othello duo to earn nominations, as Gyllenhaal and Washington currently rank second and third, respectively. Connor, who played Romeo in Sam Gold’s production of...

There's a new The Hunger Games prequel coming up. Following the recent release of the fifth book in the franchise, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, an adaptation will follow late next year.
Sunrise on the Reaping will take place after the events of the previously released prequel novel and adaptation, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which came out in 2023, but before the original films and novels. It will follow fan-favorite character Haymitch Abernathy, whose adult version was played by Woody Harrelson in the original The Hunger Games films. Set to start production fairly soon, Nexus Point News claims Charlie Plummer is eyed to play the young Haymitch in Sunrise on the Reaping.

Netflix‘s additions to its platform this month include a pair of underrated, wildly different gems from last year and a few bona fide film classics. Fortunately, the streamer’s March titles are a diverse bunch, too, which means that whether you’re in the mood for an entertaining thriller or a meditative drama, you will not have to look far for something to watch. You certainly can’t go wrong with any of the following seven films.
Here are TheWrap’s picks for the best new-to-Netflix movies streaming on the platform in March.
“Sicario” (Lionsgate) “Sicario” (2015)
Directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan, “Sicario” is a propulsive, nerve-wracking thriller about a naive FBI agent (Emily Blunt) who is recruited by a CIA officer (Josh Brolin) to join a joint task force assigned to hunt down the head of a ruthless drug cartel. While certain Disney live-action remakes have been decent, or at least tolerable, others have been borderline disastrous. Thankfully, Disney is not the only company that has delved into fairy tale adaptations, as some other interpretations have been far more successful.
Whether these non-Disney efforts further empower classic characters, provide a new spin on familiar stories, or offer visual feasts, they are all absolutely worth a watch. Perhaps these ten films will serve as reminders that fairy tales can still be fresh and exciting.
Wendy Takes a Different Approach to Peter Pan 2020, Streaming on Hulu and Disney+ Image via Searchlight Pictures
Director Benh Zeitlin’s Wendy takes the tenth spot on this list because it is far from perfect but still delightfully unique and ambitious. The film focuses on the heroine, Wendy, and her friends, the “Lost Boys. ". Instead of fully transporting the children to Neverland, though, Zeitlin’s story keeps them painfully close to reality.

Denzel Washington considers himself many things after a decorated, decades-long stage and film career. However, one notion he rejects is that he's strictly a movie star, insisting he's beyond the Hollywood tag people give him.
Speaking on CBS News' CBS News' Sunday Morning, Washington addressed being labeled a Hollywood actor, insisting that he doesn't know what the term means and considers himself a stage performer first. According to the Oscar-winning star, the tag is limiting, given his extensive theater work. "What's the definition of a Hollywood actor? Myself, I'm from Mt. Vernon, so I'm a 'Mt. Vernon actor,'" he said. "I don't know what 'Hollywood' means. "Somebody who's famous on film? A film actor, great success on film?"
Washington also stressed the pressures of being a theater performer, insisting that "nobody can help you" if things go wrong and that the stage tests your acting limits more than the big screen.

While William Shatner’s career is synonymous with his feats in Star Trek, prior to his flight in the sci-fi juggernaut, he made a name for himself by excelling in theatre, especially at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. But before headlining major plays at Stratford, he worked as an understudy to Christopher Plummer for years, a man he admired immensely.

Even though Plummer was just three years his senior, Shatner described the former as far more advanced in the realm of acting, given Plummer’s roots in the theatrical scene of Montreal. But it was his mentor’s unavailability during one play that contributed to Shatner’s breakout moment in the field.

Although there are many great actors whose work has sadly been ignored by the Academy Awards for far too long, few cases are quite as egregious as that of Christopher Plummer. Plummer was one of the greatest actors of all-time, and starred in acclaimed films for over six decades, including the Best Picture-winning musical The Sound of Music. Plummer finally received his first nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the biopic The Last Station, which many saw as a generous way of honoring his entire body of work. However, it was only two years later that Plummer won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his powerful, heartwarming performance in the romantic comedy Beginners.

Fans of Michelle Pfeiffer will get an opportunity to celebrate wildly — let’s call that “makin’ whoopee” — when she leaves her handprints and footprints in cement at the Tcl Chinese Theatre next month.
The ceremony will take place during the April 24-27 TCM Classic Film Festival, it was announced Thursday.
One of Pfeiffer’s most unforgettable performances — that of smoldering lounge singer Susie Diamond in The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), for which she received the second of her three career Oscar nominations — will be showcased at the 16th annual event as well. (Watch her in that film on the piano, and we do mean On the piano, here.)
“There’s an undeniable quality to any part played by Michelle Pfeiffer,” TCM host Ben Mankiewicz said in a statement. “She blends — seemingly effortlessly (though it surely isn’t effortless) — elegance with depth, capturing the complexity in every character she plays.

Kieran Culkin capped off a dominant Oscar season Sunday, winning Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain — and ended a streak to boot. Culkin is now the first to win the category without a Best Picture nomination for his film since 2012.
Christopher Plummer was the last one to pull this off when he triumphed for Beginners. His nomination was the only one for the Mike Mills film, and he swept the season. At 82, Plummer became the oldest acting winner at the time, a record that has since been broken by Anthony Hopkins, who was 83 when he won Best Actor for 2020's The Father.
Since Plummer's victory, every Best Supporting Actor winner until now had hailed from a Best Picture nominee. Five of them were in Best Picture winners, including the last three: Troy Kotsur (Coda), Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once), and Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer).

There are a lot of characters in Star Trek. While plenty are dearly beloved, many others are loathed, despised, or simply forgotten. Sometimes, those sentiments are deserved. Sometimes, but not always. Here, we’ll explore some characters that deserve more attention or credit than they get.
Of course, it’s hard to determine what makes a character underrated. In some cases, it can be that the fans don’t rate or praise a character as highly as they deserve. Other times, it’s that the stories themselves underserve the characters in some way. Making these judgments is obviously subjective, but I will try to explain my rationale all the same.
Also, for this list, characters who were introduced in the current era of Star Trek (basically Discovery till now) will not be included. There are certainly underrated characters in these shows, but their newness means that the fandom’s estimation...

The Oscars race for Best Supporting Actor has lacked the drama of other categories this year — so it's fitting that the clear favorite is nominated for his role in a comedy. A Real Pain star Kieran Culkin leads Gold Derby's odds to take home the statuette on March 2 — and it doesn't look like Yura Borisov (Anora), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), or Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice) can do anything about it. But who has the best shot at pulling off the upset? Let's break down the category.
Frontrunner: Kieran Culkin
In A Real Pain, Culkin plays Benji, an obnoxious yet charming drifter who accompanies his cousin, David (Jesse Eisenberg), on a tour through Poland to honor their late grandmother. Two years after his Emmy win for Succession, nearly every Oscar expert predicts...

Christian Bale's Most Underrated Performances Happened 10 Years Apart in Movies by the Same Director
With the awards season well underway and the Academy Awards quickly approaching, it is time to revisit and reconsider the greatest movie acting performances of the 21st century. Whether it's a supporting role, or a lead role, a man or a woman, a blockbuster or an understated indie film, each and every award-nominated performance has something to appreciate. From Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood to Charlize Theron in Monster, to Christopher Plummer in Beginners, to Da'Vine Joy Randolph in The Holdovers, there have been so many mind-blowing performances since the turn of the century, but only one of them can be the best. One particularly strong contender comes from the Best Supporting Actor category of the 83rd Academy Awards.
Christian Bale's first and only Oscar victory is also one of the best. In 2010, he took home the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in the Mark Wahlberg-led film The Fighter.

The Best Original Screenplay Oscar race has become a pain — and it could become A Real Pain’s. If it does, the film will become the first screenplay winner in either category not to hail from a Best Picture nominee in 20 years.
2024’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was the last original screenplay champ that was not up for Best Picture. In adapted, it goes back further to 1998’s Gods and Monsters. Both of these occurred when Best Picture was a field of five. In the preferential ballot era, all 30 original and adapted screenplay winners thus far have been Best Picture nominees.
That does not bode well for A Real Pain, which failed to make the Best Picture lineup of 10. But Jesse Eisenberg’s script has refused to go away. It has pocketed the second-most awards in the category this season after Sean Baker’s Anora and won...

The characters were later widely popularized through a series of films starring Basil Rathbone as Holmes, beginning with the 1939 Gothic mystery film The Hound of the Baskervilles, in which Rathbone’s Holmes is introduced as a dry-humored, obsessive follower of logic and reason, while Watson, played by Nigel Bruce, appears as Holmes’ lovable but often clueless assistant.

For the past dozen years, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor has hailed from a Best Picture nominee. But that streak could finally end this year, based on Gold Derby’s predictions.
Kieran Culkin is the odds-on frontrunner to win Best Supporting Actor for his performance in A Real Pain. He plays Benjamin “Benji” Kaplan, who embarks on a roadtrip through Poland with his cousin, David Kaplan (Jesse Eisenberg), following the death of their grandmother. The Searchlight Pictures film also received a Best Original Screenplay nomination for Eisenberg, who directed, wrote, produced, and starred in the project, but it was snubbed in Best Picture.
Culkin has dominated the precursor awards and should he prevail at the Oscars, he would end a 12-year streak that began after Christopher Plummer won for Beginners (2011). Plummer notably claimed this award at age 82, making him the oldest acting winner at that time (an...
