Will Smith’s Historical Epic He Says “Went Too Far” Returns to Global Streaming Charts Three Years Later
Image
Will Smith made headlines this week when he revealed that he passed on the lead role in Christopher Nolan’s Inception, but one of his movies has returned to streaming glory only a few years after it was released. Smith stars alongside Ben Foster and Ronnie Gene Blevins in Emancipation, the R-rated period action thriller following a runaway slave trekking through the swamps of Louisiana on a journey to escape the plantation owners who nearly killed him. Emancipation began streaming on Apple TV+ on December 2, 2022, and it’s currently one of the most popular movies in the world on the streamer, charting in more than 25 countries globally. The film earned “rotten” scores of 45% from critics and 58% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

During a 2023 chat with Kevin Hart, Will Smith said he believes he went “too far”while filming Emancipation, which included putting chains around his neck. Bill Collage...

Review: Alex Proyas’s ‘Dark City’ on Arrow Video Limited Edition 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
The urban hell hole in which Alex Proyas’s Dark City takes place is a passé science-fiction dystopia. As crafted by production designer Patrick Tatopoulos, the setting draws heavily from the sci-fi of the early 20th century. This is an analog world of clockwork gears, bulky gadgets, and wires that reveals a heavy debt to Fritz Lang that only deepens when taken in tandem with the noir costuming.

The film’s atmosphere suggests a stasis reinforced by the manner in which a group of pale beings called the Strangers can freeze and reverse time in order to perform experiments on a city’s denizens. Able to implant and rewrite memories at will, the Strangers give their subjects new identities every day, rebooting them in a world of endless night to see how humans respond to the stimuli of their pasts.

One resident of this grotesque zoo, though, proves resistant to these manipulations.

‘Dark City’ 4K Uhd Review (Arrow Video)

Stars: Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, Richard O’Brien, Ian Richardson, Bruce Spence, Colin Friels, John Bluthal, Mitchell Butel, Melissa George, Frank Gallacher, Ritchie Singer, Nicholas Bell, Satya Gumbert, Frederick Miragliotta | Written by Alex Proyas, Lem Dobbs, David S. Goyer | Directed by Alex Proyas

The name David S. Goyer may not be the most recognisable to mainstream cinema audiences, but he is responsible for the screenplays for some of the best superhero scripts in our time. He wrote the Blade trilogy (1998–2004), Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy (2005–2012), Man of Steel (2013), and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). He also wrote The Crow: City of Angels (1996), Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) and Hellraiser (2022).

However, in 1998 David Goyer wrote, along with Alex Proyas and Lem Dobbs, a tech noir film unlike anything the world had seen up to this point. And 27 years after this film’s theatrical release, Arrow Video has given...

‘Resurrection’ Review: Bi Gan’s Marathon Dream Film Is Baffling and Euphoric
Image
By the tenth day of Cannes, the movies begin to blend. Under-slept and over-stimulated, imaginations run wild, finding odd and intuitive parallels between wildly disparate propositions as weary attendees misremember which scene came from what film. And though director Bi Gan landed on a late-in-festival premiere for more pragmatic reasons – the wunderkind filmmaker was still shooting just one month ago, before delivering his final version late Wednesday night – his dense and delirious “Resurrection” couldn’t have found a more befitting slot.

Indeed, “Resurrection” condenses that bleary and bewildered experience into one virtuosic package. Viewers can stumble through more than a century of wildly disparate film iconography remixed and retrofitted for Bi Gan’s 160 minute opus, opting to either spot the reference or to simply let the immaculately made spectacle wash over them. Just don’t go in looking to make sense of much of it, as this film pastiche plays...

'Scream 7' Recruits Original 'Scream' Composer Marco Beltrami
Image
The Scream 7family gets bigger with some returning figures that will rekindle the flame that Wes Craven created almost 30 years ago. Marco Beltrami, the composer behind the music of the first four Scream films, has revealed that he will do Scream 7. The music veteran behind major works like A Quiet Place and Logan confirmed this on social media, and suddenly, Scream 7 just got a bit more exciting.

At first, Beltrami wasn't announced as the official composer of Scream 7. Nevertheless, a few weeks ago, a fan pleaded for him to do Scream 7 by commenting on a 2023 post on Instagram. "Please do Scream 7!" said the comment, to which Beltrami replied by saying, "Don't worry, I am." This marks Beltrami's return to the horror franchise after he wrote the score for the first Scream films, all directed by Wes Craven. In Scream (2022), Beltrami was replaced by Brian Tyler,...

8 Hollywood Movies That Nearly Destroyed Directors’ Careers: From Green Lantern To Gigli
Image
A Look At 8 Films That Nearly Ruined The Careers Of The Makers ( Photo Credit – Prime Video )

Directing a movie sounds glamorous, megaphone in hand, visions of Oscars dancing in your head. But in reality? It’s more like herding caffeinated cats through a minefield. One wrong move, and Hollywood will toss you into the “has-been” pile faster than you can say “creative differences.” Even the most brilliant directors aren’t immune. A single disaster at the box office, and suddenly, your next gig is directing car commercials in Ohio.

Some of the movies on this list came from fresh-faced newcomers; others were from seasoned legends who made one epic misstep. Whether it was a bloated passion project or a tone-deaf misfire, these films didn’t just flop, they nearly sent their directors into career exile. And while a few managed a comeback, others became cautionary tales whispered in studio boardrooms.

'Den of Thieves 2' Solidified Gerard Butler as a B-Movie Action Hero
Image
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera debuted on Netflix with so much anticipation and excitement that it’s easy to forget that the film began its life as a theatrical release. Indeed, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera only had an 18-day theatrical release window before the sequel was released on VOD. Just as the theatrical and VOD releases of Pantera triggered a resurgence in popularity for the first Den of Thieves film, the sequel’s expected streaming popularity and strong VOD performance led to the announcement of Den of Thieves 3.

Such calculations have defined the recent career of Den of Thieves series star Gerard Butler, whose decidedly formulaic and uninspired starring action vehicles have been primarily geared toward streaming audiences. Accordingly, while the role of rule-breaking Los Angeles police detective Nick O’Brien in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera and its predecessor have provided Butler with arguably the most distinctive and...

10 Best Sci-Fi Movies, According to Roger Ebert
Image
Science fiction movies built the foundation of the feature film medium at the turn of the century, with Georges Méliès' A Trip to the Moon being one of the first movies that could be considered to be a blockbuster. The best science fiction films have always been the ones that were capable of merging the pure entertainment of seeing fantastical universes and space-faring adventures with themes that reveal something about the human condition.

As one of the most important and influential film critics of all time, Roger Ebert championed science fiction filmmaking that pushed the boundaries of what was previously thought to be possible in the medium, bringing new thrills and ideas to the big screen. According to him, the best science fiction movies tell stories that are both larger-than-life and relatable to a wide audience of viewers.

Harrison Ford’s $39 Million Box Office Flop is One of George R.R. Martin’s Top 5 Movies of All Time

George R.R. Martin is one of the best fantasy writers of our time. His amazing storytelling comes not just from his imagination but also from the stories that have inspired him. Over the years, he has talked about many sci-fi and fantasy movies that influenced his writing and helped shape his ideas. One of those movies is Blade Runner, which stars the famous actor Harrison Ford.

Even though Ford was a big name, the movie did not do well in theaters when it was first released.

Will Smith's 5 Best Sci-Fi Movies Ranked
Image
Will Smith is a bonafide movie star, and you don't get to become a movie star if you're not multi-faceted. Smith's career is one that clearly demonstrates his versatility and then some; he's got a physicality and swagger that lends itself easily to an action film lead, as seen in the "Bad Boys" franchise as well as movies like "Suicide Squad" and "Bright." He has the emotional depth and soulfulness to take on a variety of dramatic roles, as in "King Richard," "The Pursuit of Happyness," "Ali," and "Six Degrees of Separation." He also has a natural comic timing — honed during his years starring on the wildly successful sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" — which crops up in many of his performances, but has also led to winning leading roles in the rom-com "Hitch" and Disney live-action remake "Aladdin."

Despite his considerable range and his continued appeal, Smith has one...

10 Best Sci-Fi Books Of All Time, Ranked
Image
Art carries with it a reflection of the world. The media we make, whether the times are turbulent or peaceful, shows us who we are, or were, or what could be, and it's almost always political. Science fiction is even more political by nature, as it draws from big ideas about technology and its applications, or arguments about gender and individuality, or how we treat an alien people we barely understand. These concepts are derided by misinformed individuals as 'woke,' as if cultural and social awareness is some disease, but these individuals also like to act as if 'woke' is some recent phenomena.

Unfortunately, this behavior is generational, as some of science fiction's greatest minds often had to obscure their identity as they were -- gasp! -- female, such as James Tiptree Jr. (Alice Sheldon) or C.J. Cherryh, or numerous people of color, like the Hugo-winning Samuel R. Delany.

Will Smith's $353 Million Isaac Asimov Sci-Fi Adaptation Is Coming to Peacock
Image
I, Robot, the 2004 Will Smith-led film that takes its name from Isaac Asimov’s 1950 collection of short stories, is headed to Peacock. Starting Feb. 1, viewers will be able to stream I, Robot, which was nominated for a 2005 Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

The film, which also starred Bridget Moynahan, James Cromwell, Bruce Greenwood, and Resident Alien’s Alan Tudyk made $353 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $120 million. The film currently has a 57% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 70% Popcornmeter Score based on more than a quarter of a million ratings.

When the film was first released, some fans had issues with it since it shares the title with the first of Asimov’s Robot book series and includes Asimov’s three laws of robotics. However, the movie does not share many similarities with any of the author’s works beyond that.

Will Smith's Adaptation Of Classic Sci-Fi Story Climbing Streaming Charts 20 Years After $353M Success
Image
A successful Will Smith sci-fi movie has appeared on a major streaming chart. Will Smith is a rapper and Oscar-winning actor who first rose to prominence onscreen when he played the title role in the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which ran for six seasons between 1990 and 1996. He successfully transitioned into being a major movie star after playing lead roles in the 1995 action-comedy Bad Boys and the 1996 alien invasion movie Independence Day, the latter of which grossed $817.4 million and became the highest-grossing release of the year.

Although subsequent Will Smith movies have taken on a wide variety of genres, he starred in many science fiction movies after the runaway success of Independence Day. His sci-fi output includes the first three movies in the Men in Black franchise, the post-apocalyptic Richard Matheson adaptation I Am Legend, and M. Night Shyamalan's 2013 movie After Earth. One of his biggest science fiction hits,...

Comic Book Movie With 87% Rt Score Is Coming To Streaming After Disappointing 2024 Reimagining
Image
2024 might be the year of the film adaptation. While the year has seen numerous highs and lows, adaptations seem to be at the heart of the 2024 release calendar. While children's films sequels such as Moana 2 and Inside Out 2 have dominated the box office, so too have adaptations like It Ends With Us and Wicked. The abundance of adaptations over original content is often a criticism of the state of Hollywood right now, but the 2024 box office has shown that these films still do well commercially.

This year has also seen a number of comic book adaptations. Most notably, this includes Deadpool & Wolverine, a Marvel Comics adaptation that features the now-canonized titular MCU characters. Not all comic adaptations are created equally, however, as this year's Madame Web bombed at the box office and among critics. This summer also saw the release of a non-mcu comic book movie that took...

The Crow's Brandon Lee Tragedy, Explained
Image
When fans learned of The Crow's 2024 re-imagining, many were skeptical. It did get stuck in developmental hell, with Jason Momoa's Crow never coming to fruition. However, Momoa's exit paved the way for Bill Skarsgård to take up the face paint in this latest adaptation of James O'Barr's 1989 comic book.

Despite the new movie's potential to attract a new generation of fans, it's hard to match (let alone surpass) the standard set by the 1994 original. The Crow, directed by Alex Proyas, remains one of the most popular movies that blends gothic horror with crime and suspense. Sadly, it was also impacted by the tragic death of its star, Brandon Lee.

Updated on December 3, 2024, by Robert Vaux: The failed 2024 reboot of The Crow has returned attention to the original, which remains the definitive version of James O'Barr's original graphic novel for reasons that have little to do with the tragic death of its star.

5 Great Tony Todd Movies To Watch In Remembrance
Image
Unfortunately, we recently lost an absolute legend with the passing of Tony Todd. His voice and presence are unmatched in the horror genre and has been a wonderful constant for over 30 years. Whenever an iconic actor passes, I think a great way to remember them is to look back on some of their greatest performances/movies. After all, this is their life’s work and clearly something they were very passionate about. But when it comes to Tony Todd, where do you even start?

Looking at his filmography can be overwhelming, given the sheer volume of films that the man starred in. One of the main traits of his roles is that he may hardly get any screen time in them, yet he manages to be the most intriguing character around. And while it’s not horror, I want to make sure to shout out his many wonderful TV appearances over the years,...

Will Smiths I, Robot Predicted the Future 20 Years Ago
Image
Quick Links Did Elon Musk Rip Off I, Robot? Did I, Robot Signal the Rise of AI? I, Robot Remains Prescient in Fascinating Ways

Sometimes, the future arrives in unexpected ways. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Will Smiths blockbuster sci-fi thriller, I, Robot (now streaming on Tubi for free), inspired by the short-story collections of the great Isaac Asimov (though the film only shares the title and basic setup in common). The movie, set in 2035, follows a detective, Spooner (Smith), who investigates the alleged suicide of the U.S. Robotics founder. Even though the Three Laws of Robotics prevent robots from directly causing harm to humans, Spooner becomes increasingly convinced that a particularly human-like robot, Sonny (Alan Tudyk), was responsible for the murder.

Since I, Robot arrived at arguably the peak of Will Smiths superstardom, it was a massive box-office hit despite mixed reviews, grossing over $350 million worldwide on a $120 million budget.

‘Blade Runner 2049’ Producers Sue Elon Musk Over AI Art in Cybercab Presentation

Alcon Entertainment, the production company behind the dystopian sci-fi opus Blade Runner 2049, is suing Elon Musk, Warner Bros. Discovery and Tesla over part of an Oct. 10 presentation to unveil the car maker’s designs for hypothetical future products, including an self-driving “cybercab.”

The much-hyped event, which also included plans for a larger autonomous “robovan” and remotely operated Optimus robots serving drinks, contained few specifics about when any of these products would become a reality. ‘I, Robot’ Director Says Elon Musk May Have Ripped Off His Movie: ‘Can I Have My Designs Back Please?’
Image
There’s something oddly familiar about Tesla’s new Cybercab and Optimus humanoid robot designs — especially to Alex Proyas.

The director of “The Crow” and “Dark City” pointed out via X the striking similarities to his 2004 film “I, Robot.” The choice of platform had to sting Elon Musk, who owns both the former Twitter and Tesla.

Proyas tweeted, “Hey Elon, Can I have my designs back please?”

The filmmaker shared three pairs of side-by-side images: On the left, pictures from “I, Robot,” and on the right, Tesla’s recent prototypes. Tesla’s Optimus, a prototype of a Tesla Bot, is a sleek, standing, walking robot that shares some of the same features and build as the ones that stood opposite Will Smith in the 20-year-old film.

There’s also have the Robovan, a bulky, Art Deco-looking vehicle envisioned to carry up to 20 people. It looks an awful lot like an “I,...

I, Robot Director Alex Proyas Accuses Elon Musk Of Stealing Designs At Tesla
Image
Science fiction has always been a genre meant to inspire and caution us in equal measure, and 2004's "I, Robot" is no exception. Taking place in the year 2035 in a future where self-driving cars are the norm, legions of robots have taken over menial tasks, and Converse All-Star sneakers are still as fresh as ever, director Alex Proyas' messy action movie was a solid hit upon release and has aged surprisingly well -- particularly as our own reality has taken larger and larger steps toward a similar status quo. One can easily imagine Will Smith's old-school cop Del Spooner looking at our own reality and stubbornly rolling his eyes at our own acceptance of and overreliance on AI. Sure, we're not quite at the level of technological advancement that Proyas and writers Jeff Vintar and Akiva Goldsman envisioned (to say nothing of famed author Isaac Asimov himself, who wrote...

I, Robot director Alex Proyas says his viral comments about Tesla’s robots looking like his movie’s designs were a joke
Image
Elon Musk’s Tesla, the brand that has been known for its electric, self-driving cars recently unveiled even more cutting-edge designs which push the envelope and could revolutionize the future of robotics as we know it. It all seems like a plot right out of a movie, and Alex Proyas, who directed the 2004 Will Smith sci-fi vehicle I, Robot, recently took to Musk’s home turf on social media to call out his product’s designs. Proyas, in what he’s now saying was just a joke, implied that the Tesla models are too eerily similar to the designs from his Issac Asimov adaptation.

In Proyas’ post, he writes the caption, “Hey Elon, Can I have my designs back please? #ElonMusk #Elon_Musk” while displaying side-by-side comparisons of the newly revealed Tesla Optimus Robots and driverless vehicles with his own film’s designs.

Musk recently unveiled two techs, a futuristic Robovan and a humanoid robot Optimus, which bear a striking resemblance to the tech featured in the film. While Musk has yet to respond, fans are having fun blasting director Alex Proyas for his ‘controversial’ take.

‘I, Robot’ Director Accuses Elon Musk of Design Theft Following Tesla’s Latest Unveiling
Alex Proyas
Top film director Alex Proyas expressed doubt over designs presented at Tesla’s recent robotics event. Proyas, known for sci-fi films like “I, Robot” and “Dark City”, took to social media after Thursday’s event. He posted photos comparing Tesla’s new robots to landmark designs from his 2004 movie “I, Robot”.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk showed prototypes including Optimus, an autonomous robot, and the Cybercab self-driving taxi. Both drew comparisons to robots in “I, Robot”. That film pictured humanoid robots serving the public under Isaac Asimov’s famous “three rules of robotics.” It received an Oscar nomination for its effects.

Proyas questioned the new designs. “Hey Elon, Can I have my designs back please?” he wrote online. However, Musk and Tesla have not yet responded to Proyas’ concerns.

‘I, Robot’ Director Mocks Elon Musk for Tesla Ripping Off Film for Optimus, Robotaxi: “Can I Have My Designs Back Please?”
Image
At Tesla’s big Cybercab Robotaxi presentation last week at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, the company also showed off the latest iteration of the Tesla Bot, dubbed Optimus, as well as a Robovan. The initial reveal of the trio of robot products caused great excitement on social media, but, very quickly, praise turned to mockery as the designs were scrutinized with a host of people accusing Elon Musk’s company of ripping off the designs found in the 2004 sci-fi film I, Robot starring Will Smith.

Tesla had dubbed the event “We, Robot,” which plays into the title of Isaac Asimov’s 1950 short-story collection on which the film is based, so there was some recognition of the cross-pollination of ideas. However, many on social media called out the uncanny resemblance that all three of Tesla’s planned robot offerings have to similar products in Alex Proyas’ film, which is set in 2035 Chicago.

‘I, Robot’ Director Accuses Elon Musk of Taking His Ideas for New Tesla Robot, Van and More: ‘Hey Elon, Can I Have My Designs Back Please?’
Image
On Thursday, co-founder and CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, unveiled a long-awaited glimpse into the future with models for their new self-driving prototypes: the cybercab and the robovan. Also at the celebration was the new Tesla robot optimus, serving up drinks and engaging with the crowds.

Whether or not the Optimus robot was actually fully autonomous or, rather, puppeteered from afar is (very) debatable.

However, one person who seemed pretty certain about the origin of these designs was “I, Robot” director Alex Proyas. The director posted his complaint directly to Muskc’s social media of choice, X, commenting, “Hey Elon, Can I have my designs back please?”

‘I, Robot’ Director Slams Elon Musk For Ripping Off Sci-Fi Film’s Designs
Image
Prior to the weekend, Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled new prototypes for robots, the much-anticipated self-driving robotaxi (Cybercab) and autonomous Robovan; but while the sleek edgeless designs may bring to mind his company’s signature look, discerning users on social media noticed another striking similarity — the futuristic mechanics that color filmmaker Alex Proyas’ work in 2004’s Will Smith starrer I, Robot.

The uncanny resemblance didn’t go unnoticed — nor appreciated — by Proyas, who took to Musk’s own X platform to slam the executive for ripping off his creations.

“Hey Elon, Can I have my designs back please?” the Aussie director, who is also behind pics like 1994’s The Crow, wrote.

Set in Chicago in 2035, the Oscar-nominated blockbuster I, Robot delves into a world in which human-like androids fill public service positions, all operating under Isaac Asimov’s three laws of robotics first coined in his story collection that serves...

"Can I Have My Designs Back?": I, Robot Director Slams Elon Musk For New Tesla Robots Ripping Off His Movie
Image
The I, Robot director is not happy about Tesla's latest announcements. Starring Will Smith, the 2001 hit featured intelligent robot servants rising up against humanity. While I, Robot 2 was never confirmed, the movie was a box office success. It earned over $350 million on a $120 million budget. Its designs also became a massive part of its enduring legacy, as the inventive and eerie appearance of its robots were stunning. After Tesla announced its own robotic servants, there have been some comparisons between the movie's machines and Tesla's.

In a post on his Twitter account, director Alex Proyas spoke out about the potentially stolen designs. He featured all three releases and compared them directly to the I, Robot designs:

Proyas compared the Optimus, the Robovan, and the Robotaxi to his original designs.

‘I, Robot’ Director Calls Out Elon Musk for Aping His Work: ‘Can I Have My Designs Back?’
Image
Social media commentators were quick to side-eye Elon Musk’s latest creations and their clear inspiration from the 2004 film “I, Robot” — and they aren’t alone, as the film’s director took to X (formerly Twitter) to call out Musk directly. “Hey Elon, Can I have my designs back please?” Proyas tweeted alongside a side-by-side comparison of futuristic objects from his movie with Musk’s strikingly similar humanoid robots, Robovan and Cybercab.

Musk noted the similarities in the event’s name itself, unveiling his latest offerings at the “We, Robot” Tesla reveal held at Warner Bros. Studios. The Cybercab, a new self-driving two-passenger vehicle, lacks a steering wheel and pedals given the emphasis on autonomous driving. The Cybercab goes into production in 2027 and is expected to cost less than $30,000.

2024's The Crow Reboot Could've Been Saved With This Connection To Brandon Lee's Movie
Image
The 2024 adaptation of The Crow didnt perform as expected with critics and general audiences, but it could have been saved with one connection to Brandon Lees 1994 version. Almost 20 years after its last movie, The Crow franchise came back to life with a new adaptation of James OBarrs comic book series of the same name. Directed by Rupert Sanders, The Crow stars Bill Skarsgrd as Eric and FKA Twigs as Shelly, and though it kept the same concepts and basic premise of the comic books and Alex Proyas 1994 movie, it also made a lot of changes.

The Crow introduces viewers to Eric, who meets Shelly at a rehab center. Eric and Shelly fall in love and escape the center as Shelly is being pursued by dangerous people. Unfortunately, these people catch up with them and kill them, but Eric is given the chance to return to the land of the living...

Original Speak No Evil director was not impressed by the remake
Image
Alex Proyas, director of the 1994 version of The Crow, made it very clear that he wasn’t happy about the existence of this year’s The Crow reboot – and now Christian Tafdrup, director of the 2022 Danish film Gæsterne, a.k.a. Speak No Evil (read our review Here) has followed in Proyas’s footsteps, revealing that he was not impressed by the recently released American remake of his film (you can read our 8/10 review of the remake Here), even though he received an executive producer credit on the film.

James Watkins, whose previous credits include Eden Lake and The Woman in Black, wrote and directed the remake, which centers on a family who takes a dream holiday to an idyllic country house, only to have the vacation turn into a psychological nightmare. Tafdrup’s version of the story, which he wrote with his brother Mads Tafdrup, had the following synopsis:...

It's Okay If You Hated The Crow 2024's Ending - Bill Skarsgrd Doesn't Like It Too
Image
2024s The Crow wasnt the successful adaptation some were hoping for, and one of its most criticized elements is its ending, which Bill Skarsgrd had already shared he didnt like. 2024 is a big year for Bill Skarsgrd with different projects that will showcase his acting skills. First was the action comedy Boy Kills World, and Skarsgrd carried on with the action (though now with a much darker tone) in The Crow. Directed by Rupert Sanders, The Crow is a new adaptation of James OBarrs comic book series of the same name, which was famously adapted into a movie in 1994.

The Crow follows Eric (Skarsgrd), a young man with a troubled past who meets Shelly (FKA Twigs) at a rehab center. Eric and Shelly fall in love and escape, but the crime boss who had been looking for Shelly eventually finds her and has her and Eric killed. Eric is revived...

Every Difference Between The Crow (2024) and the 1994 Original
Image
The following contains spoilers for The Crow (2024), now playing in theaters. It also contains a brief mention of suicide.

In Ruper Sanders' The Crow re-imagining, fans once more witness an emotional tale of murder, love and revenge. This time, Bill Skarsgrd's Eric Draven takes center-stage. He is a man on a mission, eager to end those who killed his beloved Shelly.

Skarsgrd took up the role the late Brandon Lee originated, and made it into one of cinema's most renowned. As expected, this new story makes a few changes from its predecessor, hoping to become its own thing for a new generation who may not have grown up on the previous film, or the Dark Horse comics. Here is a comprehensive list of the alterations made and the nuance that some of them added in.

The Crow Review: Brandon Lee Is Absolutely Unforgettable In The Premier Cult Classic Of The 90s
Image
In 1994, Alex Proyas brought James OBarrs The Crow comic to life with the help of writers David J. Schow (The Hunger) and John Shirley (The Specialist). Brandon Lee, a promising young actor and son of Bruce Lee, would portray the lead with Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) and Michael Wincott (Nope) in supporting roles. The result is the premier cult classic of the 90s. The Crow easily overcomes its camp and inconsistent CGI by simply being itself. The creatives are working with extreme confidence, and it shows in every frame.

'The Crow' Reboot Does This Better Than the Original
Image
1994's The Crow, directed by Alex Proyas, is a modern classic, thanks in part to its story and the fact that its star, Brandon Lee, died during filming. To watch The Crow is to watch a eulogy for an actor cut down before his time. When it was announced that a reboot was being made thirty years later, this time helmed by Rupert Sanders, and with Bill Skarsgrd having the impossible task of portraying Eric Draven, fans revolted. It felt wrong to reboot a film that's an emotional experience for so many, and on top of that, Skarsgrd didn't look like Brandon Lee's portrayal and the marketing promised a John Wick clone. The Crow is now out, and it's been ripped to shreds by critics and moviegoers alike. Still, this writer actually really enjoyed it. Is the 2024 version of The Crow as good as the original? Of course not. But...

The Crow Squawks Past First Global Box Office Milestone After Disastrous Debut
Image
Barely a couple of weeks after the disastrous box office performance of Borderlands, Lionsgate is having to contend with arguably an even bigger bomb. The Crow, a re-imagining of the cult classic 1994 film of the same name directed by Alex Proyas, which itself was based on the graphic novel by James OBarr, opened to incredibly low numbers last weekend. But on its sixth day of release, the Gothic horror film managed to pass its first milestone at the global box office; there is a chance, however, that it might also be its last.

Life of Agony’s New Music Video Pays Tribute to ‘The Crow’ Star Brandon Lee [Watch]
Brandon Lee
In honor of The Crow‘s 30th anniversary, New York metal legends Life of Agony pay tribute to fallen star Brandon Lee with their new single, “The Crow (In Memory of B.L.).”

The track was produced and mixed by guitarist Joey Zampella and mastered by Grammy winner Howie Weinberg. The music video was helmed by Derek Soto of Sinestra Studios.

“There’s something very special about the original Crow that made it timeless, and there’s a reason that it resonated with us as kids,” explains bassist Alan Robert, who’s also the creator of the popular The Beauty of Horror coloring books.

“It was an absolute tragedy,” he continues. “Brandon Lee was killed the year we did our first album, River Runs Red, and by the time The Crow came out in ‘94, he was already a legend. Brandon completely embodied the role, made it iconic, and lost his life in the process.

Spawn (1997) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Spawn was Written by Mike Holtz, Narrated by Tyler Nichols, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Almost everything about Todd McFarlane’s Spawn is purely adult fare. Even then… it’s not something you’d ever consider everyone’s cup of tea. Sure, there’s a superhero with a killer costume. But he’s from Hell and happens to be surrounded by folks who you’d imagine also keep residency there. But money is money, the MPAA is the MPAA, and you can always count on Hollywood to Hollywood. So Spawn the movie would become the walking, talking, movie version of cognitive dissonance and unleash its Hellspawn upon the world packaged as a crowd-pleasing, special FX-driven, easily digestible PG-13 film for the masses. How did it turn out? That...

Director of the original The Crow movie shades new remake over box office failure
Image
Back in 1994, exactly one million years ago, Alex Proyas released The Crow into theaters. A gothy, violent action spectacle about a rock musician who returns from the dead to take vengeance on the people who killed him and his fiancé, The Crow tapped into the budding emo spirit of the youth at the time. I personally know someone who has multiple Crow tattoos, so the movie meant something to people at one point.

Part of the movie's lasting legacy involves star Brandon Lee, the son of Bruce Lee, who died during production. The Crow had a lot of sequels, and Alex Proyas has long disapproved of all them, including the new remake starring Bill Skarsgård in the lead role, because he considers them made in bad taste. According to The A.V. Club, Proyas once wrote on Facebook about the new movie: "I really don’t get any joy from seeing...
