Jason Momoa Shaves His Beard for 'Dune: Part Three' and He Already Hates it
Image
Jason Momoa is nothing if not committed to his movie roles, and he has been proving that again after undergoing a shocking transformation for his return to the Dune franchise in Dune: Part Three. Yes, after six years of rocking a manly chin-mane, Momoa has done the unthinkable and had a shave – and he absolutely hates it.

While it is not uncommon for actors to undergo some changes for certain movie roles, Momoa’s comment about it being six years since he last made a clean-shaven appearance anywhere is because that was the first time he played Duncan Idaho in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part One.

Sharing a video of the moment he lost his signature fuzz, Momoa said, “Only for you, Denis,” referencing Villeneuve directly. He followed this by adding, “Goddamnit! I hate it.” It would probably be fair to say that many people would agree with him, but not to worry,...

‘Father Mother Sister Brother’ First Look: Jim Jarmusch Directs Adam Driver, Cate Blanchett, and Vicky Krieps
Image
Jim Jarmusch is keeping it all in the family. The auteur reunites with a slew of his frequent collaborators for “Father Mother Sister Brother,” set to be released by Mubi. The film will first premiere at the 2025 Venice Film Festival in competition, Jarmusch’s first time in that section. The Cannes perennial premiered “Coffee and Cigarettes” out of competition in Venice in 2003.

“Father Mother Sister Brother” is designed as a triptych, with the trio of stories all concerning the relationships between adult children, “their somewhat distant parent (or parents),” per the film’s synopsis, and each other. Each of the three chapters takes place in the present, and each in a different country: “Father” is set in the Northeast U.S., “Mother” is in Dublin, Ireland, and “Sister Brother” is in Paris, France. Per any Jarmusch film, it’s a character study that blends melancholy and comedy.

Jason Momoa Raves About His Son Nakoa-Wolf Being Cast in 'Dune 3'
Image
Jason Momoa had a proud Dad moment at the premiere of his new Apple TV+ series, which has been compared to Game of Thrones, as he took the opportunity to rave about his son, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, being cast in a key role in Dune: Part Three. Momoa's offspring will make his film debut in the third installment of Denis Villeneuve's epic space opera trilogy alongside his father, who is reprising his role as swordsmaster Duncan Idaho despite the character's heroic sacrifice in the first film adaptation of Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi novel.

News broke in June that Nakoa-Wolf had joined the cast of Dune: Part Three, having signed on for a significant role alongside Ida Brooke. The two stars will be playing Leto II and Ghanima, the twin offspring of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya), heirs to the Atreides empire. The teenage son of Jason Momoa...

Oscar season starts here.

With its 2025 line-up, announced Tuesday, the Venice Film Festival has (again) taken the award season pole position, with a program packed with a frankly absurd number of must-see movies.

This will mark the Venice festival debut for both Roberts and Johnson.

Expected Titles at the 2025 Venice Film Festival
Image
‘After the Hunt’ Luca Guadagnino’s follow up to ‘Queer’ and ‘Challengers’ dives into the life of a college professor dealing with “cancel culture”, her secretive past, and a serious accusation against her colleague. With a cast led by Julia Roberts (in just her third film of the decade), Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri, and Michael Stuhlbarg, ‘After the Hunt’ is one of the most anticipated films expected to premiere at Venice. Dune: Part Three Officially Begins Filming; Denis Villeneuve Shares First Production Still
Image
Cameras are now rolling on the third and final Dune movie, which will not be known as "Dune: Messiah" as we had assumed based on previous comments from the filmmaker.

Villeneuve confirmed that Dune: Part Three is now filming with a production still spotlighting the sands of Arrakis.

“First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,” Villeneuve said of the first two movies in a recent interview. “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.”

Villeneuve has stated that he has no intention of helming...

Vicky Krieps Says Jim Jarmusch Isn’t Looking to Make Only Prestige Films: He’s ‘Not Trying to Go to Cannes’
Image
Jim Jarmusch just wants to make films for the sake of cinema. Jarmusch’s latest collaborator, actress Vicky Krieps, couldn’t help but applaud the indie filmmaker’s nonconformist vision during the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Krieps will next star in Jarmusch’s ensemble “Father, Mother, Sister, Brother” alongside Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Tom Waits, and Charlotte Rampling.

“What I really, really love about [Jarmusch] is that he is still just making a movie. He’s not trying to make the next Jim Jarmusch. He’s not trying to go to Cannes,” Krieps said, as reported by THR. “He’s really trying to figure out how to make the movie on set, like a student would make a movie. And that is very, very beautiful.”

Jarmusch certainly has had his fair share of experiences at Cannes, winning the Camera d’Or for his first feature “Stranger Than Paradise...

Timothée Chalamet Appears to Have Shaved His Head for 'Dune: Messiah'
Image
Academy Award nominee and one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men, Timothée Chalamet, has seemingly debuted a bold new look for his return as sci-fi icon Paul Atreides in director Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming sequel, Dune: Messiah. Chalamet is now one of the most recognizable A-listers in Hollywood, with the actor consistently making daring choices as he continues in his “pursuit of greatness.”

Clearly, the pursuit continues, as the actor has now been spotted ditching his long, luscious locks as he transforms into the buzz cut sporting fascistic warlord of his own nightmares in Dune: Messiah. Seen wearing a cap and bandana to hide his new hairdo (via tchalamet_updates), this much harsher look suggests that Paul will have undergone some major changes when the third Dune movie lands in theaters in 2026.

Released in 1969, the second novel, “Dune Messiah,” leans even more into hard science fiction. It is currently...

Orca (1977) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Happy 50th anniversary Jaws. You are undoubtedly one of not only the greatest summer blockbusters of all time but a landmark horror film that lives on in both its quotable lines and music that nearly everyone will know when heard but also its legacy. While we have covered the series nearly to death in almost every fashion possible, I don’t think we have looked at what it did for the movie world as much as we could. While there are knockoffs that try to directly capitalize on the very name that built the foundation, looking at you Cruel Jaws/Jaws 5, there are so many wonderful copycats that were produced that live on in their own special ways. My plan is to cover a few of them over the next couple months and while there are many to discuss either on the merits of so bad they are good or genuine uniqueness,...

7 Jaws Knock-Offs and the Revival of the Creature Feature
Image
When Jaws became the biggest movie in the world, there was no doubt that directors and producers would take the wrong lessons. Single-handedly reviving the creature feature in popular culture, Jaws led to a series of particularly violent movies about other animals on a rampage. Below, we’ve highlighted seven of the best Jaws knock-offs and why they’re fun in their own right.

Jaws Knock-Offs to Watch 7. Mako: The Jaws of Death (1976)

Directed by William Grefe

Deciding that sharks were enough to get audiences into the theater, Mako: The Jaws of Death is one of the more blatant Jaws knock-offs in the era. However, it’s a far stranger movie than you might expect. A man not only realizes he has a telephatic connection to sharks, but he grows emotional bonds to them. When others threaten his shark friends, the man uses the sharks to eliminate the threats. Mako...

Dune: Messiah Reportedly Casts Nakoa-Wolf Momoa & Ida Brooke As Leto II & Ghanima Atreides - Spoilers
Image
Following the recent news that The Batman star Robert Pattinson is set to play the villainous Skytale in Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Dune: Messiah, we have a very interesting casting scoop from Nexus Point News.

According to the site, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke are set to play the twin children of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya), Leto II and Ghanima.

Possible spoilers follow.

These characters are only introduced towards the end of Frank Herbert's second novel, when Chani dies while giving birth. They go on to play much larger roles in subsequent books, with Leto II eventually transforming into the human/sandworm hybrid (it's complicated) God Emperor of Arrakis.

How much of this will be covered in the Messiah adaptation remains to be seen, but given the ages of the actors playing the twins, it seems clear that Villeneuve plans to incorporate at least some elements of Children of Dune.

Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’ Will Premiere at Venice, Mubi Chief Says
Image
We were disappointed when the Cannes lineup came out and Jim Jarmusch’s next film was not on it. But it seems like we just had to wait a little longer.

Efe Cakarel, the CEO of Mubi, which is distributing Jarmusch’s next movie, told a crowd at SXSW London that Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother” will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in the main competition.

“That’s already confirmed,” he said during a keynote speech at the festival on Friday (via Variety). He also added one other movie joining the lineup that Mubi will be releasing, Paolo Sorrentino’s next movie “La Grazia” starring Toni Servillo.

Venice won’t announce its lineup for some time, but it’s an exciting get for the festival and could be the first of several high profile contenders on the Biennale. Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine” from A24 has been rumored,...

Mubi CEO on Pushing Into Production and That Huge Cannes Haul
Image
Arthouse streamer and distributor Mubi is planning to work on not more than 12 movies annually but is already up to 15 movies this year after a hot streak picking up a slew of Cannes Film Festival buzz titles – and the Venice Film Festival has not even started yet, CEO and founder Efe Cakarel told SXSW London on Friday in an energetic appearance that had the crowd engaged late in a busy week.

Cakarel shared his love of the cinema-going experience early in his appearance, saying, “I really focus on theatrical,” and “I am very committed to these films getting as wide a release in cinemas as possible.”

Last year, Mubi released The Substance globally, he highlighted. “It turns out distribution is not rocket science,” Cakarel concluded, adding that the firm is launching theatrical in Italy next.

Mubi CEO Efe Cakarel Confirms Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’ Will Debut In Competition At Venice & Teases Push Into Series Production
Image
“We have the new Jim Jarmusch film. We are a co-producer on that, and it’s already confirmed to be in competition at Venice,” Mubi CEO Efe Cakarel said this afternoon during a Q&a session at SXSW London.

The new film from Jarmusch is titled Father Mother Sister Brother and stars Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Tom Waits, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore, and Luka Sabbat. We’d heard from many sources that the film was heading for the Lido, but this is the first time it has been confirmed publicly.

The official synopsis for Father Mother Sister Brother reads: Estranged siblings reunite after years apart, forced to confront unresolved tensions and reevaluate their strained relationships with their emotionally distant parents.

Elsewhere during this afternoon’s session, Cakarel told the SXSW crowd that Mubi has bought La grazia, the new film by Paolo Sorrentino, which he said...

Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother Secures Venice Competition Slot
Jim Jarmusch
Jim Jarmusch’s long-awaited feature “Father Mother Sister Brother” is set to debut in the main competition of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, running 27 August–6 September 2025 on the Lido.

The anthology follows three interconnected family stories across the United States, Ireland and France, and marks Jarmusch’s first narrative feature since The Dead Don’t Die in 2019. Its ensemble includes Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Charlotte Rampling, Mayim Bialik, Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat. Principal photography wrapped quietly in Ireland and France last June.

The road to Venice has been unusually circuitous. Early trade chatter tipped the film for Cannes, yet it was absent from Thierry Frémaux’s April line-up announcement, prompting speculation about a late switch to the autumn circuit. World of Reel later reported that the project “skipped Cannes” and became a leading contender for Venice after the festival’s selection committee passed on it.

Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’ Starring Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver Confirmed for Venice Competition, Says Mubi Boss
Image
The official Venice Film Festival lineup may be some weeks from being announced, but one film looks set to be included.

Jim Jarmusch’s next feature “Father Mother Sister Brother” will screen in competition on the Lido, according to Efe Cakarel, the CEO of the film’s co-producer Mubi.

“That’s already confirmed,” he told a crowd at SXSW London, where he was giving a keynote speech on Friday.

“Father Mother Sister Brother” — which shot last year — stars Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Tom Waits, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat.

The film is a triptych, following three separate stories set in different countries and revolving around relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parents and each other. The first part, “Father,” is set in the east coast in Northeastern U.S., “Mother” is in Dublin, Ireland, and “Sister Brother” is in Paris, France.

15 Best Javier Bardem Performances, Ranked
Image
Javier Bardem emerged in Spain in the 1990s as a different kind of movie star. Scion of a notable acting family, his privilege and experience manifested in supremely confident leading roles in crossover hit “Jamon, Jamon” (1992) and Almodóvar’s “Live Flesh” (1997).

With his appealing features and compelling screen presence, there was little doubt Hollywood came calling, and indeed, in the new millennium, he has joined Antonio Banderas and his equally talented wife, Penélope Cruz, as the industry’s most prominent Latin imports. He was daring in “Before Night Falls” (2000), for which he received his first Oscar nomination and appeared in films by Michael Mann and Miloš Forman. He would eventually rise to superstardom as the embodiment of calculating evil in “No Country for Old Men” (2007); he won the Oscar this time for one of the most chilling depictions of villainy in recent memory.

Ever since, Bardem has acted with the...

‘There’s an epic nature to this story’: ‘Dune: Prophecy’ star Emily Watson teases travels to Arrakis for Season 2
Image
In its first season, Dune: Prophecy explored the Imperium and the foundations of the Sisterhood that would become the powerful Bene Gesserit 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides.

At the cornerstone of that foundation stands Valya Harkonnen. As played by Emily Watson on the HBO series, the Mother Superior is a powerful and uncompromising leader, doing everything she can to secure the future of her Sisterhood.

By the end of the series' first season, Vayla found herself on a new planet, but one very familiar to Dune fans. Gold Derby had the opportunity to speak with Watson about playing Valya and what lies ahead for her as she ventures to Arrakis in search of the enemy who could destroy everything she holds dear.

Gold Derby: What was your familiarity level with the world of Dune coming into this project?

Emily Watson: Minimal. I had seen the first Denis Villeneuve movie,...

Netflix's Live-Action 'Assassin's Creed' Series Recruits Veteran Creative Team
Image
The Assassin's Creed franchise is getting a redo in live-action, and Netflix has moved quickly to assemble a team of veteran television writers for their upcoming streaming series adaptation. The best-selling action adventure franchise famously got a feature film released in theaters in 2016 starring Michael Fassbender, but it proved to be another misstep in the video game movie genre. The streamer looks to rewrite history with their new live-action series, which will be spearheaded by a Westworld alum.

Nexus Point News (via the Writer's Guild of America) reports that Roberto Patino, an executive producer for Westworld and the showrunner for HBO's Dmz, will act as executive producer and co-showrunner for Netflix's Assassin's Creed alongside David Wiener (Halo). Joining them is an impressive list of producers and writers, as seen below. As of this writing, it is unclear what stage of development the project is in. However, the upcoming series is...

‘Dexter’: The Most Unnecessary Plot Twist Makes ‘Original Sin’ Season 2 Much More Twisted That I Can’t Ignore
Image
The 2nd Season of Dexter: Original Sin is in the works and already shaping up to be an emotional deep-dive into young Dexter Morgan’s transition into a vigilante serial killer. But one obtrusive narrative twist is not sitting right with me. The complete crossing out of Dr. Evelyn Vogel, a neuropsychiatrist who played a significant role in the original Dexter series, was not just unexpected, but absolutely unnecessary.

In Dexter Season 8, we were introduced to Vogel, who was revealed to be a secret architect of the infamous “code”, a system that controlled Dexter’s moral conduct, steering his homicidal urges towards a path of vigilante service. Her ties to Dexter’s early years were classified as critical elements of the show. So why would Original Sin leave such a pivotal character out?

The puzzling erasure of Dr. Vogel from Dexter’s origin story

Randy Orton’s Biggest Regret in WWE Was Letting The Undertaker Down
Image
Back in 2005, Randy Orton was a 24-year-old hotshot in the WWE and prepared to wrestle The Undertaker at WrestleMania 21. Orton was “The Legend Killer” and was given the opportunity to challenge The Undertaker’s legendary undefeated streak, which was a huge deal for any wrestler. So what did Orton regret most about that time?

He blew off all of the match rehearsals and let down a legend and learned a lesson about growing up. Years later, on WWE Untold and Broken Skull Sessions, Orton explained how being an arrogant kid almost cost him and contributed to why professionalism matters in WWE’s challenging world.

Randy Orton’s rookie mistake with The Undertaker

Can you imagine it’s April 2, 2005? The day before WrestleMania 21, a run-through just for Randy Orton‘s huge match. All the heavyweights are there, like The Undertaker, Orton’s dad Bob Orton, producers John Laurinaitis and Ricky Steamboat,...

Mubi Signs Major Three-Year Co-Production, Financing and Distribution Pact With Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli’s Our Films (Exclusive)
Image
Mubi, the global streamer, producer and distributor behind “The Substance,” has struck a major three-year co-production, financing and distribution agreement with Our Films, the new Rome-based company founded by prominent European producers Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli.

Our Films, which is part of Mediawan, was launched last year by Gianani and Mieli, and has already become a creative hub for world-class filmmakers from Europe, the U.S. and overseas. Mubi and Our Films share the same passion for artistically ambitious movies that resonate internationally. The agreement also underscores Mediawan’s drive to further strengthen their status as a leading prestige European film studio.

The first film to emerge from this strategic alliance will be the next feature from Paweł Pawlikowski, the Oscar-winning director of “Ida” and “Cold War.”

Mieli previously successfully collaborated with Mubi on three high-profile films: Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” starring Cailee Spaeny; Pablo Larraín’s “Maria,” starring...

2025 Cannes Film Festival: Bi Gan, Lynne Ramsay, Nadav Lapid, Lucrecia Martel…Who Will Claim the Final Comp Spots?
Image
The clock is ticking—it’s the eleventh hour. The Délégué général Thierry Frémaux is deep in the final throes of curating this year’s Competition lineup and he is currently weighing in on the last few masterstrokes for the Class of ’25. Rushed in at the wire, a handful of freshly picture-locked films are being evaluated and with only two or three slots left for the Palme d’Or comp, there are are maybe a dozen of antsy filmmakers hoping they get the invite. We might hear of the new titles tomorrow or perhaps early next week and we can only assume that Jim Jarmusch and Arnaud Desplechin might still options on the bingo card but were of the opinion that they were kept on ice incase something more noteworthy trickled in.…...

'Dune 3': Florence Pugh Confirms Princess Irulan Return for 'Messiah'
Image
Florence Pugh has confirmed that she is returning as Princess Irulan Corrino for Dune: Part Three, aka Dune Messiah, which is set to begin filming this summer. Her character becomes a central figure in the second book of Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi series, suggesting a more prominent part and extended screen time for her in the forthcoming third movie from director Denis Villeneuve. "I hope we see more of her," Pugh told Harper's Bazaar, keeping coy about the possibility of her expanded role, adding, "I want more cool outfits!"

Princess Irulan is the eldest daughter of the duplicitous 81st Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, portrayed by Christopher Walken in Dune: Part Two, and Anirul, a Bene Gesserit of Hidden Rank, though this is only briefly visited on screen. Pugh's character evolves from a passive observer to an active participant in the unfolding drama when she agrees to marry Paul Atreides...

Cate Blanchett Says She Is ‘Serious About Giving Up Acting’
Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett has said she is seriously considering stepping away from acting, citing other personal interests and a long-standing discomfort with public attention. In a recent interview with Radio Times, the two-time Academy Award winner stated that her family often dismisses her comments about retiring, but she remains firm in her intent.

“My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting,” Blanchett said. “There are a lot of things I want to do with my life.”

Blanchett is currently featured in BBC Radio 4’s upcoming drama The Fever. The interview also touched on her ongoing discomfort with public appearances and celebrity culture. Speaking about the experience of being quoted out of context, she said, “When you go on a talk show, or even here now, and then you see soundbites of things you’ve said, pulled out and italicized,...

Cate Blanchett Says ‘I Am Serious About Giving Up Acting’: There Are ‘A Lot of Things I Want to Do With My Life’
Image
Cate Blanchett is surprising fans by revealing in an upcoming issue of Radio Times (via The Standard) that she is not going to be an actor forever. That’s not to say retirement is imminent for the two-time Oscar winner (“The Aviator” and “Blue Jasmine”), but there will come a time when Blanchett leaves the profession behind.

“My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting,” Blanchett said. “[There are] a lot of things I want to do with my life.”

Blanchett most recently starred opposite Michael Fassbender in Steven Soderbergh’s acclaimed spy drama “Black Bag,” which has earned $21 million at the domestic box office. She told the publication that she’s “spent a lifetime getting comfortable with the feeling of being uncomfortable” in the public eye as a famous actor.

When Rebecca Ferguson Was Intimidated By This Dune Co-Star & It Wasn’t Timothee Chalamet Or Zendaya!
Image
Which Dune Star Left Rebecca Ferguson Intimidated? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Timothée Chalamet didn’t rattle Rebecca Ferguson. Zendaya didn’t shake her up either. Giant sandworms? Please. But one Dune co-star had her spiraling with nerves right before filming even started. And no, it wasn’t because of a scene partner her age. It was the legendary Charlotte Rampling.

Ferguson played Lady Jessica in Dune (2021), and her first scene on day one of filming was the iconic Gom Jabbar moment. No pressure, right? Well, it just so happened that the woman across from her was Rampling, playing the powerful and commanding Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam. That combo of scene + star? Cue the anxiety.

“I was very nervous,” Rebecca Ferguson told The Cut. “I was having heart palpitations knowing she was going to walk in.” To be fair, Ferguson wasn’t alone in her fear. Director Denis Villeneuve and even Chalamet were just as intimidated.
