No movie flop is as legendary as 1963's Cleopatra, which became tabloid fodder long before the Elizabeth Taylor historical epic ever hit the silver screen. But as with many legends, fiction has become intermingled with fact over the intervening years. Collider's Michael Zimmermann spoke with Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz, who's covering the film on the new season of TCM's The Plot Thickens podcast, to clear up some of the misconceptions surrounding the film. Mankiewicz has a personal interest in dispelling the mistruths about the film: it was directed by his great-uncle, Joseph L. Mankiewicz. The first misconception Ben Mankiewicz addresses is that it's a terrible movie.
In his opinion, "It's not terrible. It's not great," and that a more modern approach actually would have salvaged it: "Joe wanted two, three-hour movies. It's a four-hour movie. [When you watch it] you don't think, 'Oh, my God, what a disaster, right?'...

Hollywood has always been a family business.
One generation’s A-lister often leads to another’s breakout role — sometimes riding on a wave of familiar last names, other times actively ducking the spotlight.
But legacy doesn’t guarantee sameness. In fact, that’s where things get interesting.

Kevin Costner’s career has been built on the foundation of gritty, sprawling Westerns like Dances With Wolves and Yellowstone. Credited for reviving the genre with Dances With Wolves, he has since gone on to direct his own epic, Horizon: An American Saga.
But long before that, the film that lit the spark and developed his love for the genre was: How the West Was Won. The 1962 epic, directed by Henry Hathaway and others, hooked him on the genre, eventually inspiring him to transform into Hollywood’s modern cowboy.

Director Nanette Burstein is known for bringing bold, intimate portraits of iconic figures to life, and her latest work, Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes, is no exception. The HBO documentary takes audiences on a revealing journey through the life of one of Hollywood’s most iconic actresses, using never-before-heard audio tapes recorded with journalist Richard Meryman, alongside personal footage from Taylor’s archive.
Burstein’s involvement in the documentary was serendipitous. When asked how she was chosen for this ambitious project, Burstein explains, “Originally the tapes themselves were found by Richard Meryman's estate — his wife found them. A producer had approached me about making this film, and I was very interested because I've always been an Elizabeth Taylor fan, and I thought, 'What a treasure trove of potential, very confessional recordings that she had.'”
Separately, Taylor’s estate realized the tapes existed and approached Burstein to create the documentary...

For an author, getting their book adapted into a film can be seen as a great honor. It's a way for their work to be accessible to a wider audience and hopefully spark or renew interest in the original work. While the common adage is that the book is always superior to the movie, it could be argued that many movie adaptations surpass the source material.
Still, there will always be novelists who wish they never got mixed up with Hollywood in the first place. It's understandable for an author to hate an adaptation if it completely misses the point of the book or is just plain bad. But some authors hate stone-cold cinematic classics for one different reason or another. It might be unavoidable to an extent, with authors feeling absolutely precious over their works than anything else. Even...

Billie Lourd says her comedic family helped her with her acting skills.
The 32-year-old actress, whose mother was Carrie Fisher and whose grandmother was Debbie Reynolds, said that growing up in an ultra-talented family helped her establish her career.

“They were better at it than me. I can do a fair bit of tap dancing, not as good as young Debbie Reynolds, but that’s also in the genes, although my mom kind of sucked at tap dancing,” she joked.
However, Billie still has her own sense of identity.
“I’m a very distinct personality, definitely different from both of them. Well, it’s something you learn through generations. I think I’ve learned to balance my life and my work in a different way than they were able to do,...

There’s something magical about the movie Singin’ in the Rain. No matter how many times you watch it, the film feels just as fresh and joyful as the first time. It’s more than just a classic musical; it’s a beautiful and joyous story about love, ambition, and the challenges of an evolving time in Hollywood.
Set at a time when the film industry was transitioning from silent films to talkies, the movie showed creativity and charm in the chaos of that era. But everything was portrayed with a lighthearted touch.

There’s no doubt that John Ford was a master of the Western genre. Ford’s eye for storytelling made him one of the greatest directors of all time, and when it came to depicting the Civil War in How the West Was Won, he brought the same sharp vision that defined his career. The film is separated into five segments, each directed by a different filmmaker, about a frontier family experiencing defining moments of the 19th century.
In John Ford’s Civil War chapter, the story follows Zeb Rawlings (George Peppard), a young man drawn into the conflict despite his mother’s desperate wish to keep him out of it. Zeb witnesses the horrors of the Battle of Shiloh, losing his father in the process, and later returns home to find his mother dead and his family farm no longer a place he belongs. Wicked‘s Cynthia Erivo and Emilia Pérez‘s Karla Sofía Gascón earned their widely predicted Best Actress Oscar nominations on Thursday. Their bids represent a rare double in Oscar history: This is the second time — and first in 60 years — that multiple musical performances are nominated in Best Actress.
Counting just traditional musicals with non-diegetic music, the last time this happened was, naturally, during the heyday of musicals in the 1960s. Julie Andrews and Debbie Reynolds were nominated for their respective 1964 films, Mary Poppins and The Unsinkable Molly Brown, with the former winning. There could’ve been a third musical nominee that year had My Fair Lady‘s Audrey Hepburn made the cut.
Andrews’ victory has been seen as a bit of sweet revenge after producer Jack Warner cast Hepburn instead of Andrews, who originated the role of Eliza Doolittle on Broadway in the film adaptation of My Fair Lady. Not...

“I always dread this day,” she wrote. “I spend so much time leading up to it thinking about how awful I’m going to feel. And my dread is usually right. I woke up this morning with a dark cloud over me. But when my kids woke up the dark cloud dissipated and made way for bright glowing sunshine.”
She compared the anniversary of Fisher’s death to an “emotional tropical storm” when it rains a lot, but the light in between is more beautiful than any other day without storm clouds.

When comedy writer Bruce Vilanch got the four-word pitch from his agent in 1978 — Star Wars Holiday Special — it seemed like a very bad idea. “But I ignored that,” he writes in his upcoming book, It Seemed Like A Bad Idea At the Time: The Worst TV Shows In History and Other Things I Wrote. “Actually, it was no worse than any other bad idea that was being floated around for a pre-Thanksgiving holiday show.”
The Star Wars Holiday Special, however, was a notoriously bad idea. Vilanch takes his fair share of the blame. After all, "it was 1978. There were a lot of chemical additives circulating.” But he also points to George Lucas as a reason the special turned out to be outrageously terrible. Lucas had written outlines for several Star Wars tales, most of which he’d planned to make into movies. A few stories were committed to other media,...

At the 74th Academy Awards, held to honor the films of 2001, Peter Jackson's fantasy epic "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" was nominated for a whopping 13 awards, including Best Picture. It ultimately won four Oscars, signaling that fantasy films were now considered major prestige fare; traditionally, the Oscars have been drawn to biographies, histories, and dramas of a personal nature. For the purposes of this article, I will remind readers that "Fellowship" lost its award for Best Original Song to "If I Didn't Have You" from "Monsters, Inc." The "Fellowship" song was a wispy, dream folk-like lullaby called "May It Be," written by Nicky Ryan, Roma Ryan, and noted dream-rock chanteuse Enya.

A pair of the ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in 1939’s The Wizard of Oz fetched an all-time auction record for entertainment memorabilia when they sold on Saturday afternoon for $28 million. The sale was handled by Dallas-based Heritage Auctions. With the buyer’s premium, the total is $32.5 million, and the buyer currently remains anonymous.
Auctioneer Mike Sadler announced at the podium at the conclusion of the lot’s bidding that the slippers had far surpassed the previous auction record of $5.52 million for the white halter dress designed by William Travilla and worn by Marilyn Monroe in 1955’s The Seven Year Itch. That costume also was sold at Heritage in 2011 and was part of the famed collection of Debbie Reynolds.
“There is simply no comparison between Judy Garland’s ruby slippers and any other piece of Hollywood memorabilia,” said Joe Maddalena, executive vice president of Heritage Auctions, in a statement released following the sale.

If there’s one thing that can divide the anime fandoms, it’s the dub vs sub debate. Both factions can’t stand the other, and the arguments are severe enough to strain friendships. But you’ll be glad to know that Hayao Miyazaki doesn’t distinguish between them.
The director is known for his scathing views on the animation industry at large. His political opinions have also gotten him plenty of hatred in Japan and other countries. But when it comes to the matter of dubbed and subtitled anime, Miyazaki is simply neutral.

As a genre, movie musicals have had some serious ups and downs throughout Hollywood history. Right now, they definitely seem to be on an upswing, especially now that the long-awaited "Wicked" movie blew everyone away at the box office — and it was only the first half of the musical to boot.
In recent years, movie musicals like "Wonka," "Mean Girls," "The Greatest Showman," "La La Land," and even the filmed stage version of "Hamilton" have become enormous hits, though critical reception has been decidedly mixed across these projects. So what are the best musicals ever according to the official Rotten Tomatoes ranking of movie musicals? Only three musicals earned 100% ratings on the review aggregate, which is — I have to say — a little surprising, largely because some all-time classics apparently missed the cut. For example, "The Sound of Music" and the original "West Side Story" only earned 83% and 92%, respectively, despite being two staples of the genre,...

Pamela Anderson is opening up about her role as Shelly in Gia Coppola's The Last Showgirl (2024). After three decades on stage, the film follows the veteran Vegas showgirl (Anderson) as she faces an uncertain future when her long-running show Le Razzle Dazzle suddenly comes to an end. Directed by Coppola (Palo Alto), the film dives into Shelly's path of motherhood and rediscovery as an era of elaborately sequined and bright-feathered costumes quietly falls to the wayside of the increasingly commercialized City of Sin.
In an interview with Deadline, Pamela Anderson discussed how her upbringing mirrored Shelly's life as an impassioned performer and mother. The Last Showgirl is a neon-lit exploration of familial bonds, set against the backdrop of a dying Las Vegas showbiz culture. As she reexamines her life, Shelly struggles to reconnect with her estranged daughter, Hannah (played by Billie Lourd), which prompts Anderson to reflect on her...

October 21 is a somber day on which we honor the memory of one of acting's greatest forces of talent on what would have been her 68th birthday. The dynamo actress Carrie Fisher is known by most for her iconic role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars film franchise, and known as "mom" to fellow actress Billie Lourd. The legendary actress's only child posted a moving and emotional tribute to her late mother on Instagram, describing the vastness of grief.
Lourd poured her heart out in the caption of an old photo of her mother blowing out the candles on a past birthday cake. The Scream Queens actress lamented over how difficult birthdays of passed loved ones can be, and how it is different every year. She stated that while she wants to take her mother's birthday as a time dedicated to celebrating her mother's life, but that some years...

It’s the late great Carrie Fisher’s birthday, as the Star Wars icon and prolific writer would have turned 68 today. Fisher is obviously best known for playing Princess Leia, but her long list of acting credits also includes the “Mystery Woman” from The Blues Brothers, Marie from When Harry Met Sally and “Bianca Burnette,” the washed-up actress who accuses George Lucas of sexual misconduct in Scream 3.
Less high up on Fisher’s list of accomplishments is the 1981 comedy Under the Rainbow, a notorious turd about the making of The Wizard of Oz, also starring Chevy Chase. Inspired by possibly apocryphal stories involving the hotel hosting the “drunken” Munchkin actors, Under the Rainbow also threw in a wacky espionage plot line about Nazi spies, which is why Hitler gets heil-ed in the balls just five minutes into the movie.

Dick Van Dyke is a national treasure. For the better part of a century, the comedic actor has been entertaining audiences with his endlessly flexible physical comedy, his sunny personality, and his big heart. He makes everything he's in better, which means there's really no such thing as a bad Dick Van Dyke movie. Plenty of Van Dyke's films are crowd-pleasers, but only one was ever a certified, unanimously loved critic-pleaser -- at least according to Rotten Tomatoes.

This past weekend, Heritage Auctions auctioned off nearly 900 props, costumes, maps and more from Game of Thrones. There were bidding wars galore, and at the end of the three-day session, every single lot was sold for a total of $21,115,718, according to Heritage Auctions itself.
In the end, this was the most successful auction themed around a single film or TV show, and the second most successful auction in the history of Heritage Auctions. The most successful, interestingly, was a 2011 auction featuring pieces of Hollywood memorabilia archived by movie star Debbie Reynolds, which included items like the camera on which George Lucas shot Star Wars and clothing worn by Marilyn Monroe. I guess Hollywood as a whole still beats Westeros.
All in all, 32 items from the Game of Thrones auction fetched $100,000 or more. Let's look at a sampling:
Obviously, the Iron Throne commanded the highest price: $1,490,000Jon Snow's sword Longclaw was very popular.

The month of October brings with it plenty of annual viewing traditions, and chief among them for ’90s kids is the “Halloweentown” franchise. The series launched in 1998 with a Disney Channel Original Movie about a 13-year-old girl who learned that not only did she descend from a line of witches, but there’s actually an entire community called Halloweentown populated by witches, warlocks and all sorts of spooky creatures.
“Halloweentown” played on Disney Channel ad nauseum every October, and eventually spawned three additional sequels. With spooky season in full swing – and with all four movies currently streaming on Disney+ — now is as good a time as any to get straight how to watch the “Halloweentown” movies in order.

Here's a lightly intriguing bit of Hollywood history that involves "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," "Gilligan's Island" and Arthur Penn's New Hollywood masterpiece "Bonnie and Clyde."
Like most showbiz lore, it begins with Bob Denver's physical condition. If you're reading this, there is a very good chance that you've never seen an episode of "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," let alone heard of it. Created by humorist Max Shulman, whose other major claim to fame is having written "The Tender Trap", the sitcom aired for four seasons on CBS and quickly became a showcase for Denver, whose Maynard G. Krebs brought beatnik culture into America's living rooms.
Krebs was a hepcat with an affinity for jazz and a hatred of work. He spoke via a too-cool-for-school patois, and, being too young to know much of what he was talking about, often made an ass of himself in doing so.

Exclusive: Alex Gibney-produced Benjamin Netanyahu doc The Bibi Files, directed by Alexis Bloom, has set sales with Goodfellas ahead of a work-in-progress screening in Toronto.
With the global spotlight on Netanyahu as the death toll continues to rise in the Israel-Gaza war sparked by the October 7 Hamas attacks, the doc promises unprecedented insight into the backstory behind the Israeli prime minister’s ongoing corruption trial and how it is informing his current actions.
The work features leaked footage of police interrogation videos with Netanyahu, wife Sara, and son Yair, conducted from 2016 to 2018 as part of the eight-year criminal investigation which led up to the controversial politician’s indictment in November 2019, for breach of trust, bribery, and fraud.
This material has been intercut with interviews with key Israeli figures including former prime minister Ehud Olmert, Netanyahu’s former spokesman Nir Hefetz, former Shin Bet leader Ami Ayalon, and investigative journalist Raviv Drucker among others.

Albert Brooks’s films are as smooth and polished as any American comedy could hope to be, and yet they’re freighted with submerged neuroses. Mother embodies this tension between a book and its cover. It has a high concept, the jokes are honed with a jeweler’s precision, and the staging values functionality over poetry. It superficially suggests a sitcom, and yet there’s still very much the possibility of the audience feeling “seen” by Mother, as Brooks’s sharp punchlines are more revealing than they initially appear to be.
One of Brooks’s governing themes here—and perhaps the dominant theme of his work—is how neurotics of his generation try to talk themselves out of their neuroses. Brooks’s characters appear to say what they mean, giving his films a veneer of having no subtext. But his characters’ outbursts, modeled on their generation’s obsession with therapy,...

What do Billie Lourd, Colin Hanks, and Bette Midler have in common? The answer: They were all rather taken with Daniel Reisinger.
The charismatic Australian director (Sideswiped, Players) spoke to The Hollywood Reporter on just how he landed such an impressive cast for what is a relatively niche British rom-com. And Mrs is one of Edinburgh Film Festival‘s world premieres in its out of competition category this year.
To describe this film, penned by Melissa Bubnic, as a rom-com feels misleading; its protagonist Gemma, played by Irish actress Aisling Bea, is left bereft and blindsided when her fiancé Nathan (Hanks) drops dead months before their wedding. In a bizarre but incredibly endearing effort to honor their love and distract herself from her own grief, she sets about trying to posthumously marry him.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is arguably the best Wayne/Stewart western, showcasing their unique on-screen chemistry and individual talents. How the West Was Won, a sprawling epic, features both Wayne and Stewart in a star-studded cast but lacks depth in exploring its themes. The Shootist serves as Wayne's poignant swansong, offering a powerful portrayal of an aging gunfighter and challenging his clean-cut hero image.

Existential crisis, sarcasm, dry wit and soured relationships collide in Albert Brooks‘ charming comedy Mother. The director uses his signature style of comedic delivery and sentiment to explore the delicate nature of a mother’s bond with her son. Brooks has been called “The West Coast Woody Allen.” It’s easy to understand the comparison between the two prolific filmmakers. Afterall, they each write, direct and star in their own films, their stories are grounded and contemplative, and they’ve each voiced characters in animated features (Ants and Finding Nemo).
However, the nickname over simplifies Brooks’ work and minimizes the originality of his creative style. In Mother, Brooks uses his talents and skills — honed and perfected from over a decade behind the camera — for an in-depth, humanized reflection on growth, redemption and healing.

The 90s hit show, Will & Grace, was a monumental sitcom that still reigns as one of the best series of all time and is noted for its pivotal cast of memorable characters played by Debra Messing, Eric McCormack, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullally. From breaking down various social barriers to featuring an array of epic guest stars, including Debbie Reynolds, Blythe Danner, and Woody Harrelson, Will & Grace is a top-notch series that changed the landscape of prime-time television forever. Out of the series' eleven seasons, there are a ton of signature episodes that have a special place in fans' hearts, but there are some like "Bacon and Eggs," and "Lows in the Mid-Eighties," that belong in a category of their own.

After all, the subject...
