Robert Rodriguez in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)

Robert Rodriguez

A Hit George Clooney Horror Movie Had A Canceled Show That Ended Far Too Soon
Image
This post contains spoilers for "From Dusk Till Dawn" and its television adaptation.

Robert Rodriguez's "From Dusk Till Dawn" is a strange, chimera-coded beast. The film opens like an action-heavy crime thriller featuring two charismatic leads, but transitions into a campy vampire B-movie halfway through. Such a drastic tonal shift shouldn't work on paper, but writer Quentin Tarantino (who also plays the psychopathic Richard Gecko in the film) weaves a frenetic story that genre hops with great skill and ease. There's also plenty to love here: a show-stopping Salma Hayek who suddenly transforms into a grotesque creature, the complex two-and-fro between Richard and his more suave brother, Seth (George Clooney), and an all-out gorefest sequence that is a lot of fun.

This half-and-half formula might not work for everyone, but "From Dusk Till Dawn" boasts a distinctive identity that deserves appreciation. The opening sequence alone points towards brilliant worldbuilding...

FrightFest Delves Into the Mystery of ‘Where Is Juan Moctezuma?’
Image
Few figures in genre cinema are as cloaked in speculation as Juan F. Moctezuma II, a name that has long drifted through the shadows of Mexican horror history. His films from the 1970s are rumoured to have influenced Guillermo del Toro, Robert Rodriguez and Sam Raimi, yet the man himself has remained an enigma. This month, Where Is Juan Moctezuma? will premiere at FrightFest London 2025, screening on Sunday 24 August at 8:40 p.m. in Discovery Screen Two at the Odeon Luxe West End, and is set to reopen the debate about whether the elusive filmmaker ever truly existed.

According to decades-old accounts, Moctezuma’s career reached its peak with 1000 Paths of Death, his first Hollywood production under Roger Corman. The project was reportedly filmed in complete secrecy before vanishing along with its director. One theory claims the work was sabotaged by his nemesis, the legendary luchador El Escorpión, a feud that,...

Robert Rodriguez in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
Eli Roth unveils The Piano Killer faux trailer, which will be attached to Jimmy and Stiggs in theatres
Robert Rodriguez in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
After creating the Thanksgiving faux trailer for the Robert Rodriguez / Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse back in 2007, Eli Roth wanted to make an entire feature out of faux trailers, a project he called Trailer Trash. Trailers he teased for that included Nascar Dog, Bear Witness, and Farmageddon, plus collaborations with Edgar Wright, Robert Rodriguez, Peter Berg, Howard Stern, and Greg Nicotero, among others. Sadly, Trailer Trash never happened – but we did get a Thanksgiving movie eventually. And today, a new Roth faux trailer has dropped online! It’s called The Piano Killer and it will be playing in theatres with the bonkers splatterfest Jimmy and Stiggs, but you can watch it right now in the embed above.

Note that the faux trailer for The Piano Killer ends with the promise that the film is coming in 2042, a nod to the fact that it took seventeen years for the Thanksgiving movie to get made.

‘Thanksgiving’s Eli Roth and Jeff Rendell Hit a High Note With ’The Piano Killer’ Trailer [Exclusive]
Image
Nearly two decades ago, Eli Roth teased the world with a slasher flick centered around Turkey Day and, several years later, that movie served up a feature-sized production through Thanksgiving. Now, the celebrated filmmaker is in the trailer business again with the latest short-form project to come out under his new banner, The Horror Section. Titled The Piano Killer, the short but sweet project, which Roth created alongside his longtime collaborator, Jeff Rendell (Thanksgiving), gives fans yet another imaginative bit of content that could easily make its way into a longer format in the future. Ahead of the full trailer’s arrival in cinemas beginning on August 15 as part of the preshow entertainment prior to Joe Begos’ Jimmy & Stiggs, Collider is excited to give audiences a taste of the perfectly tuned brutality to come.

A murderous madman is on the loose in our sneak peek of the teaser for The...

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Becomes No. 4 Most-Watched English Language Netflix Movie of All Time, Securing 158 Million Views
Image
“KPop Demon Hunters” made Netflix history during the week of July 28, becoming the streamer’s fourth most-watched English-language movie to date. In the seven weeks since its debut, the action musical secured 158.8 million views.

The animated movie from Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans has now been more widely watched in its first 90 days than Ryan Reynolds and Jennifer Garner’s “The Adam Project,” Sandra Bullock’s “Bird Box,” Cameron Diaz and Jaime Foxx’s “Back in Action,” Sam Esmail’s “Leave the World Behind,” Ryan Gosling’s “The Gray Man,” Millie Bobby Brown’s “Damsel” and Robert Rodriguez’s “We Can Be Heroes.” It also bumped “We Can Be Heroes” out of Netflix’s top 10 most popular English-language movies list.

And since the 90-day cutoff for “KPop Demon Hunters” won’t happen until mid-September, chances are high that ranking will only be going up, up, up.

Despite the success of Netflix’s latest hit,...

Image
August 1 will be a bad day for the highest-rated movie directed by Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino is a well-known director, writer, and actor who got his start in the late 1980s. While he has both written and performed in movies that he did not direct, including Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn, Tarantino is best known for his directorial efforts.

Quentin Tarantino's first movie as a director was 1992's Reservoir Dogs, a cult classic that kickstarted a career that includes major titles such as the Kill Bill movies, Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterds, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Altogether, Tarantino's directorial efforts, none of which have splats on Rotten Tomatoes, have earned him eight Oscar nominations and two wins.

James Cameron confirms the one thing about Avatar’s future we were hoping for
Image
James Cameron is about to turn 71 years old, but he might be the busiest he’s ever been in his life.

The Academy Award-winning filmmaker behind iconic works such as The Terminator, Aliens, True Lies, and Titanic has filled his days over the last two decades with a single, monumental work: the Avatar franchise. Cameron famously began working on the first film in the series shortly after Titanic’s release, and continued to work on it and refine the innovative technology behind it all the way up to its release in 2009.

Following the record-breaking blockbuster success of that film, Cameron set forth on crafting a follow-up that would ultimately transform into a complex, multi-part series of sequels.

This plan led to all of the second and third films, Avatar: The Way of Water and the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash, filmed concurrently. However, the planned fourth and fifth films in...

Red Sonja shares a behind-the-scenes promo and a chainmail bikini selfie
Matilda Lutz in Red Sonja (2025)
A reboot of Red Sonja spent nearly fifteen years in development hell before going into production in 2022 with director M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) at the helm. Before Bassett signed on, the project had passed through the hands of directors Robert Rodriguez, Simon West, Bryan Singer, and Joey Soloway, with Hannah John-Kamen, Rose McGowan, and Amber Heard being considered for the lead role. Matilda Lutz ended up starring in the film, which is set to receive a theatrical release (courtesy of Samuel Goldwyn Films) on August 13 before arriving on digital on August 29. With those dates swiftly approaching, a behind-the-scenes look at the film’s stunts, fights, cast, and horses has been shared on social media, along with a selfie Lutz took while wearing the title character’s iconic chainmail bikini.

Bassett directed the film from a screenplay by Joey Soloway (Transparent) and Tasha Huo (Netflix’s Tomb Raider anime). This version...

'Avatar' Creator, 70, Shares an Update on Whether He Will Direct Future Movies
Image
As another installment of the global hit sci-fi film series Avatar bows into theaters this December, director James Cameron has reflected on his place in the future of the franchise. He still has two more movies in the Avatar universe to make, and given the significant time it takes to make each movie, there have been concerns that he might not be physically capable of seeing all the films to the end. Cameron turns 71 soon, but that won't slow him down — at least that's the plan. He plans to direct Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. "I mean, there's no reason not to. I’m healthy, I'm good to go," he told Empire when they asked if there was a possibility he could hand over the day-to-day duties of making the remaining films to another director.

Still, the future is unpredictable, and Cameron has thought about it. "I’m not going to rule it out,...

James Cameron intends to direct the fourth and fifth Avatar movies
James Cameron is "good to go" when it comes to directing Avatar 4 and Avatar 5.The 70-year-old filmmaker has helmed the third movie in the epic sci-fi franchise Avatar: Fire and Ash – which will be released in December – and plans to be behind the camera for the next two pictures, which are scheduled to hit cinemas in 2029 and 2031 respectively.Speaking to Empire magazine, James said: "I mean, there's no reason not to."I'm healthy, I'm good to go. I'm not going to rule it out. I mean, I've got to make it in a vigorous way, to handle the kind of volume and energy of the work for another six or seven years. You know what I mean? I might not be able to do that... (but) if I can, I'll just do it."The Titanic director pointed out that he has passed on his planned movies to other filmmakers...

James Cameron Says ‘I’m Healthy’ Enough to Direct ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘Avatar 5’ as He Turns 71 Years Old: ‘I’m Good to Go’ and ‘There’s No Reason Not’ to Do It
Image
James Cameron said in a new interview with Empire magazine that he’s “good to go” when it comes to directing “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5.” The third “Avatar” movie, officially titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” opens in theaters later this year. Cameron originally cast doubt on his “Avatar” directing future, telling Empire in 2022 that helming the franchise is “all-consuming” and he might want to “pass the baton” to another director starting with “Avatar 4.” But that’s no longer the Oscar winner’s intention.

“I mean, there’s no reason not to,” Cameron said ahead of his 71st birthday in August about directing more “Avatar” sequels himself. “I’m healthy, I’m good to go. I’m not going to rule it out. I mean, I’ve got to make it in a vigorous way, to handle the kind of volume and energy of the work for another six or seven years.

James Cameron, 70, Updates Comments On Passing Avatar 4 & 5 To A New Director
Image
James Cameron has spoken out about directing Avatar 4and 5 at the age of 70. The Titanic filmmaker, born in 1954, is turning 71 in August and currently has five movies in the pipeline at different stages of development. The highly anticipated Avatar: Fire and Ash is coming to movie theaters in December.

Meanwhile, Avatar 4 is scheduled for 2029, and Avatar 5 is expected in 2031. In addition to heavy franchise duties, Cameron is also confirmed to be adapting Joe Abercrombie's novel The Devils as well as Charles R. Pellegrino's The Last Train From Hiroshima and Ghosts of Hiroshima.

During an interview with Empire, James Cameron addressed whether he still intends to direct Avatar 4 and 5. He shared that "there's no reason not to," and he'd do it for as long as he could. Although the director doesn't rule out "factors out of [his] control," he assured readers that he believes he could handle "the...

The Devils | James Cameron adapting the hit fantasy novel because it’s “off its tits”
Image
James Cameron is adding an adaptation of Joe Abercrombie’s best-selling fantasy horror The Devils to his schedule, and suggests he might even direct.

Director James Cameron is still firmly in the Avatar business, with a second sequel, Fire And Ash, due in December and at least two further sequels scheduled for 2029 and 2031. There’s also talk of animated spin-offs, which he’ll most likely produce.

Cameron has other projects lined up away from the planet Pandora, however. There’s his potentially harrowing period piece, Ghosts Of Hiroshima, which he’s confirmed he’ll direct himself. Then there’s The Devils, an adaptation of Joe Abercrombie’s best-selling fantasy horror novel published this year.

Lightstorm (Cameron’s production company) acquired the rights to that novel last year, with the filmmaker having read and enjoyed Abercrombie’s full-blooded yarn while it was still a manuscript. Earlier this year, Cameron put out...

Before Fantastic Four, Marvel's Silver Surfer Actress Was In A Much Different Comic Book Movie
Image
Actress Julia Garner made her feature film debut in 2011, playing the role of Sarah in the deprogramming drama "Martha Marcy May Marlene." She quickly landed many additional film roles for her talent and her intensity, appearing in both gentle indie dramas (like "Electrick Children") and studio schlock (like "The Last Exorcism II"). In 2014, Garner already appeared in her ninth feature film, "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For," a sequel to the 2005 film "Sin City." She was rolling high, and would only continue to become more famous.

"Sin City," as many remember, was a highly stylized, near-animated film noir directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller. It was based on Miller's 1991 comic of the same name, itself designed to be a film noir on steroids. It took the images and themes and stories of old pulp crime stories, and ratcheted up the sex and violence to a dizzying degree.

Unmade Rob Zombie Movies We Want To See
Rob Zombie
Rob Zombie has said that for every one film project of his that moves forward, there are five potential projects that fall by the wayside. We haven’t heard of quite that many unmade Rob Zombie movies, but we have heard of several over the years that never got off the ground… and unfortunately, most of them sounded pretty interesting. A little over a year ago, Zombie had said he didn’t know what his next movie is going to be, but he did know what it’s not going to be: he won’t be continuing his Firefly franchise, and he doesn’t want to make a sequel to The Munsters (which was poorly received). So while he figures out his next cinematic move, we we have put together a list of Rob Zombie Movies We Want To See!

James Cameron Says He’s “Good to Go” for ‘Avatar’ 4 and 5 – No Plans to Step Aside
Image
James Cameron isn’t done with the Avatar world just yet. Even after spending nearly two decades building one of the biggest sci-fi franchises in movie history, he’s still fully committed to finishing what he started.

Some fans thought he might step back and let someone else direct Avatar 4 and 5, but Cameron says that’s not the plan.

Talking to Empire magazine in a feature on the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash, Cameron made it clear he still wants to direct the final two films himself. “I mean, there’s no reason not to,” he said. “I’m healthy, I’m good to go.”

Still, he’s realistic about how demanding these massive productions can be. Making Avatar movies is a huge job, and he knows anything could happen in the next few years. “I’m not going to rule it out,” he added. “I mean, I’ve...

James Cameron All In: Ready to Helm ‘Avatar’ 4 & 5 Himself!
Image
James Cameron isn’t ready to step away from Pandora just yet. Despite some recent speculation online, the legendary director has made it clear that he still wants to be the one behind the camera for Avatar 4 and 5.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Cameron confirmed that he’s not planning to hand off the directing duties to anyone else, at least not if he can help it. “I mean, there’s no reason not to,” he told Empire. “I’m healthy, I’m good to go.”

The Avatar series has been in the works for a long time. After the massive success of the first film in 2009, Cameron didn’t just plan one sequel, he imagined a five-movie saga. Something huge, on the level of The Lord of the Rings, but built from scratch.

It’s been a long and challenging process. He’s already completed The Way of Water,...

James Cameron Wants To Direct Avatar 4 And 5 Himself: ‘I’m Good To Go’
Image
For a long time now, James Cameron has been clear on the scale of his ambitions for the Avatar sequels. He didn’t just imagine a singular follow-up to his 2009 sci-fi original, but envisioned a five-film overall saga, an all-new epic tale on the scale of The Lord Of The Rings, but without existing material to draw from. It is a huge undertaking. And while he’s spent the last 16 years planning the overarching narrative and bringing The Way Of Water and Fire And Ash to life, it has led to some speculation online that he might be ready to hand off the fourth and fifth films to another director.

But as he tells Empire in our world-exclusive Avatar: Fire And Ash issue, he very much plans to still direct Avatar 4 and 5 himself. “I mean, there's no reason not to,” he says. “I’m healthy, I'm good to go.

Halloween Horror Nights Reveals Details About ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Maze

WWE and Five Nights at Freddy’s are the latest properties joining this year’s bone-chilling Halloween Horror Nights house lineup.

Initially teased in June by Jason Blum during the Blumhouse 15th anniversary panel at Ccxp Mexico and then by Hhn social accounts, the Five Nights at Freddy’s experience will see guests fighting to stay alive as they navigate a house based on the 2023 film, adapted from Scott Cawthon’s wildly popular horror game of the same name. Guests will “follow in the footsteps” of Mike (played in the film by Josh Hutcherson), a newly hired night security guard for the abandoned themed entertainment center Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria who discovers that nothing at Freddy’s is what it seems.

As parkgoers move through the center’s corridors — including the security room and showroom — they will encounter full-scale replicas of Freddy Fazbear, Chica, Bonnie, Foxy, and Mr. Cupcake, created...

Matilda Lutz in Red Sonja (2025)
Red Sonja: We Interview the Cast at Comic Con!
Matilda Lutz in Red Sonja (2025)
Red Sonja is a property Hollywood has been trying to get right for quite some time. Created by Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith—based on a character by Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard—Red Sonja has long been a staple of the sword-and-sorcery genre and remains one of the most iconic pulp heroines of her era.

Riding the wave of Conan the Barbarian’s success, producer Dino De Laurentiis attempted to launch a Red Sonja franchise in 1985, with Brigitte Nielsen in the title role and Arnold Schwarzenegger playing a thinly veiled version of Conan named Lord Kalidor. The film was a major flop, but as fantasy has made a strong comeback in recent years, many believe Red Sonja is overdue for a proper cinematic revival.

Over the years, various filmmakers have tried to bring her back to the screen—including Robert Rodriguez (with Rose McGowan), Simon West,...

James Cameron and Billie Eilish are teaming up for a surprising collaboration
Image
During her recent four-night run of concerts in Manchester, Billie Eilish made a surprise announcement on stage about a new cinematic collaboration she’s working on.

“So, you may have noticed there are more cameras than usual up here,” Eilish said, per Deadline. “Basically, I can’t say much about it, but what I can say is I’m working on something very, very special with somebody named James Cameron, and it’s going to be in 3D. So, take that as you will, and these four shows here in Manchester, you and me, are part of a thing that I’m making with James.”

The nine-time Grammy winner went on to elaborate that Cameron, the multi-Academy Award-winning filmmaker behind films such as The Terminator, Titanic, and Avatar, was “in this audience somewhere,” and that the 3D project would serve to commemorate this era of her career in visceral fashion.

Predator: Badlands | New trailer hints at a sci-fi buddy action thriller
Image
The new trailer for Predator: Badlands makes a hero out of a fearsome hunter, who teams up with Elle Fanning’s synthetic human. Take a look:

Update 22nd July 2024: The new trailer for Predator: Badlands has landed, and it not only underlines the crossover between Alien and Predator universes, but also its subgenre. It’s a buddy-thriller, of sorts, with Elle Fanning’s Weyland-Yutani synthetic human Thia teaming up with a teenage, rookie Predator in order to take down some gigantic type of unearthly threat.

Will the xenomorph itself make an appearance in Predator: Badlands? At the very least, we wouldn’t be surprised if director Dan Trachtenberg’s film cleared the way for some sort of Alien V Predator reboot.

Predator: Badlands is due for release in UK cinemas on the 7th November. In the meantime, here’s the new trailer:

Our original story follows…

Desperado Turns 30: How Well Has Salma Hayek’s Breakout Western Aged?
Image
Desperado was released in August 1995 and emerged as a commercial success, proving to be a breakout hit for Salma Hayek and launching director Robert Rodriguez to the forefront of the 1990s action scene. Despite mixed reviews, the movie remains surprisingly refreshing even after three decades for a few good reasons.

The movie is the second installment in Rodriguez’s Mexico trilogy, featuring the same unnamed character as his low-budget indie actioner El Mariachi, albeit with Antonio Banderas taking over the role. Like its predecessor, the movie was mostly filmed in Mexico and has aged well after thirty years. Here is why Desperado remains entertaining even after three decades.

The One Reason Salma Hayek’s Desperado Has Aged Well Even After 30 Years

Desperado, starring Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek in the lead roles, was released on August 25, 1995. It emerged as a box office hit, grossing roughly $25 million against a production budget...

One John Malkovich Movie Will Be Impossible To Watch In Our Lifetime
Image
Brands will go a long way to generate a memorable bit of publicity, and in the case of French cognac company Rémy Martin, that means a long way forward in time. As part of a marketing campaign back in 2015 for its Louis Xiii cognac, Rémy Martin hired Robert Rodriguez to direct a series of commercials and short films. John Malkovich was brought in to star and also serve as a creative lead on the project.

The focal point of the campaign is "100 Years," a short film that, according to Rémy Martin, will not be made available until 2115 -- 100 years after its production. It's meant to mirror the amount of time it takes to produce a batch of Louis Xiii cognac. Clever, right? That means that neither Malkovich, Rodriguez, nor most people alive today will be around to see it. The two big names make a decent amount of sense for such an idea,...

How to Train Your Dragon Live-Action Version Nears $600M, Leaves Alita: Battle Angel Behind at Global Box Office(Photo Credit –YouTube)

How to Train Your Dragon, now flying high in its live-action form, has been soaring through theaters for over a month and is closing in on the $600 million mark worldwide, with nearly $250 million collected domestically. At a time when many thought the trend of live-action remakes was running out of steam, this one has surprised everyone by proving there is still plenty of wind left in those sails.

Box Office Numbers Put How to Train Your Dragon Ahead of Franchise’s Previous Films

The remake has already carved out a spot among the top 300 global earners and, with the way things are going, it is likely to climb higher than the franchise’s second installment, becoming the biggest box office success of the series.

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Takes Out James Cameron-Produced $200 Million Franchise-Killer at the International Box Office
Image
After playing in theaters worldwide for a month, director Dean DeBlois' live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragonis nearing the $600 million mark worldwide and the $250 million mark domestically. The movie has emerged as a bona fide hit at a time when the audience's interest in live-action remakes of animated classics seemed to be dwindling. The movie's success has cemented it as one of the 300 highest-grossing hits in global box office history; How to Train Your Dragon will most likely overtake the franchise's second installment before the end of its run, and, in doing so, will become the top-grossing entry of the series. For now, How to Train Your Dragon can celebrate passing another big-budget tent pole, produced by one of the most successful filmmakers in history.

The movie's $326 million overseas haul puts it ahead of Alita: Battle Angel, the 2019 cyberpunk manga adaptation produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez.

While showing someone you love one of your favorite movies can be a terrifying experience, especially if they don’t like it, or maybe they already knew too much about it and aren’t wowed, this experience builds even more if the movie has that One scene or that One twist that you know is coming but your viewing partner is blissfully unaware. For me, its showing The Usual Suspects to someone who somehow doesn’t know the secret of Keyser Söze or watching the tense body of a loved one jump out of their seat when R.J. MacReady tells us that Gary is going to be the Thing only for someone else’s blood to jump away from the hot needle. As fun as being the source of someone else’s thrill and living vicariously through them is,...

Ahead of 'Predator: Badlands,' the Movie That Revitalized the Franchise Celebrates Its 15th Anniversary
Image
Fifteen years ago this week, Predators dropped into theaters like its cast of Earth’s deadliest misfits—uninvited, unexpected, and fully armed. Directed by Nimród Antal and produced by Robert Rodriguez, the film was a gritty throwback to stripped-down action horror, released with a modest $40 million budget and going on to make $52 million domestically and $127.2 million worldwide. Not a bomb, but hardly the monster hit it deserved to be, especially for a then-new Predatorfilm.

Let’s be honest: the premise rules. Eight of the most dangerous people on Earth — soldiers, killers, mercs, and one suspiciously soft-spoken doctor — wake up in freefall, dropped onto a lush, alien jungle planet. Surprise! They’re not alone, and they’re not the hunters this time.

It’s basically The Most Dangerous Game meets Predator, with a little Battle Royale tossed in for good measure. “I’ve always loved the concept of some of the...

Matt Damon's Early Western Flop Found A Fan In Quentin Tarantino
Image
There are few interview subjects more candid, unpredictable, and downright entertaining than Quentin Tarantino. As far as filmmakers go, he exists on a saltily rarified plane with trash-talker supreme Orson Welles. He can be dishy, prickly and outrageously cocky, but as arguably the most influential filmmaker of his generation, he's at least earned the right to sound off on all things cinematic. And while I don't always agree with him, I appreciate that his opinions are coming from a fiercely sincere and deeply knowledgeable place.

While I enjoy Tarantino's brashness, I think he's at his very best when he goes to the mat for underappreciated film artists. Soon after he broke through with "Reservoir Dogs" in 1992 and established himself as an outspoken cinephile, he championed the films of Brian De Palma. This was not exactly an opportune time to sing the director's praises, as he'd just hit the skids...

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Brigitte Nielsen in Red Sonja (1985)
Red Sonja explained: The history of the iconic Sword and Sorcery heroine
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Brigitte Nielsen in Red Sonja (1985)
The trailer for the long-awaited Red Sonja movie just dropped, so now seems like the perfect time to dive a bit deeper into the iconic She-Devil with a Sword's decades-long history in comics. In Fantasy comics, Red Sonja is likely surpassed in fame only by Conan the Barbarian himself. Much like Conan has a history in comic books that goes back decades, Red Sonja has been a comic book icon since the '70s, often as an ally of Conan.

Despite the association with Conan and Robert E. Howard's Hyborian setting, Red Sonja, at least in her iconic comic book iteration, isn't actually a Robert E. Howard creation. There is a clear influence owed to female fighter in Howard's 1934 historical war story The Shadow of the Vulture by the name of Red Sonya (note the different spelling) of Rogatino, to the point that Dynamite does credit Howard as a co-creator of the character.

Matilda Lutz in First Trailer for M.J. Bassett's New 'Red Sonja' Movie
Image
"He wants us to fight." "Or we both die." Samuel Goldwyn Films has revealed the first official trailer for the epic new Red Sonja fantasy action movie, based on the famous Red Sonja "She-Devil with a sword" character which was featured in Marvel Comics in the 1970s. This isn't the first time she has been on screen – there was a famous Red Sonja movie in 1985 featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Brigitte Nielsen as Red Sonja. This action-packed new adaptation will be released in theaters this August. Enslaved by an evil tyrant who wishes to destroy her people, barbarian huntress Red Sonja must unite a group of unlikely warriors to face off against Draygan The Magnificent. Directed by action filmmaker M.J. Bassett, this new Red Sonja stars Matilda Lutz (from the thriller Revenge) as the title character, with Wallis Day as Annisia, Robert Sheehan as Draygan, Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu,...

Forgotten ‘Conan the Barbarian’ Spin-Off Finally Arrives With a Bloody, Brutal First Trailer
Image
The She-Devil With a Sword has finally returned. Red Sonja, the long-awaited reboot of the classic fantasy comic book character, is coming back to the big screen this summer. In the new trailer for the film, Matilda Lutz plays the flame-haired barbarian warrior as she seeks vengeance, battles monsters, and confronts death in a gladiatorial arena. M.J. Bassett (Rogue) directs the film, which had been stuck in development hell for decades. The film will premiere in theaters on August 15, 2025.

In the trailer, Sonja swears revenge on the raiders who killed her people, sending her on a quest that eventually lands her in the clutches of the villainous warlord Draygan The Magnificent and pitted against his deadly, eyebrow-less bride, Dark Annisia. In a nod to the character's fantasy origins, she battles not only Draygan's warriors, but also a massive horned monster. And yes, she does find herself in her comics incarnation's infamous "chainmail bikini,...

Red Sonja stands in the way of a conqueror in the new trailer for the long-delayed film
Image
It’s finally here, folks. After years of delays, with names like Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan once attached, the remake of Red Sonja is about to be released. Samuel Goldwyn Films snagged the U.S. distribution rights for the Millennium Films production. Matilda Lutz dons the metal bikini this time around in the role that Brigitte Nielsen previously played in the 1985 film, which also featured an appearance by Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan. Samuel Goldwyn Films has now released the trailer and Red Sonja is due to hit screens on August 15 before arriving on digital on August 29.

The description reads: “Captured. Chained. Forced to fight for survival. Red Sonja must battle her way through the blood-soaked pits of a tyrant’s empire and rally an army of outcasts to reclaim her freedom and take down Dragan and his ruthless bride, Dark Annisia.” In addition to Lutz, Red Sonja also stars...

Hypnotic | In 2023, Robert Rodriguez casually dropped one of the weirdest heist scenes ever
Image
Starring Ben Affleck, the thriller Hypnotic slipped into cinemas in 2023. But its heist sequence really has to be seen to be believed…

At their best, heist scenes are pure cinema: a collision of suspense, intrigue, character and satisfying pay-off. There’s the anticipation of the planning; the nail-biting tension of the act itself. Will one of the thieves make a mistake? Will a bank clerk press one of those red buttons underneath a desk? Will the whole operation end in success or bullet-strewn failure?

The heist is such an effective plot device that entire stories can be built around it. Much of the Ocean’s films are about the plotting and mathematical precision that goes into, say, breaking into a Las Vegas vault. Christopher Nolan’s Inception – essentially a mind heist – spends much of its duration exploring how Leonardo DiCaprio’s protagonist assembles a team capable of messing with Cillian Murphy’s head.

7 Best Michael Madsen Movie Performances
Image
Often cited as one of the defining “character actors” of the post-’90s wave of crime cinema, Michael Madsen was a truly electrifying performer who had the ability to elevate any project he was in, regardless of its quality or fame. Perhaps the ill-fated remake of the Steve McQueen film “The Getaway” or the James Bond film “Die Another Day” wouldn’t be listed as cinematic classics. Still, Madsen brought a sense of specificity and menace to his performances that made them far more entertaining than they had any right to be.

Although his credits included dozens of B-movies, many of which could be described as “guilty pleasures,” Madsen also appeared in some of the most defining and acclaimed films of their era. While he was best known for his collaborations with Quentin Tarantino, a filmmaker whose love for exploitation thrillers and classic cinema made him an excellent partner, Madsen...

Hollywood Remembers Michael Madsen as Tributes Pour in for the Beloved Star
Image
The world lost a true icon yesterday when Michael Madsen passed away at his home in Los Angeles County. Today, Hollywood is mourning the loss of the beloved actor, who touched the lives of so many people both on and off camera, not the least of whom was his younger sister, Virginia Madsen. A legend in her own right, the Candyman and Dune star penned a touching tribute to her late brother, calling him, among other things, a "poet and an outlaw" in an emotional post on social media.

Taking to Instagram following the news of her brother's passing, the younger Madsen shared a photo of her and her brother along with their mother, author and filmmaker Elaine Madsen. "My brother Michael has left the stage," she wrote. "He was thunder and velvet. Mischief wrapped in tenderness. A poet disguised as an outlaw. A father, a son, a brother—etched in contradiction,...

Walton Goggins, Jennifer Tilly, Billy Baldwin and More Pay Tribute to Michael Madsen: “A Total Stick of Dynamite on Screen”
Image
Hollywood is mourning the loss of Michael Madsen, who died Thursday, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed. He was 67.

The actor, known for his work in many Quentin Tarantino films like Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, was found unresponsive by deputies responding to a 911 call at his home in Malibu. His rep told THR Madsen had “a cardiac arrest.”

Following the news, stars and family took to social media to share tributes to Madsen. His sister and Candyman actress Virginia Madsen posted a photo of them with her mom, writing partly in the caption, “He was thunder and velvet. Mischief wrapped in tenderness. A poet disguised as an outlaw. A father, a son, a brother — etched in contradiction, tempered by love that left its mark. We’re not mourning a public figure. We’re not mourning a myth — but flesh and blood and ferocious heart.

Salma Hayek Is Not a Friend Who Abandoned Blake Lively During Her Lawsuit With Justin Baldoni
Image
Salma Hayek was seen on a dinner outing with Blake Lively and her sister, Robyn Lively, in May, amidst her legal case. Ryan Reynolds was also in attendance at this dinner of the friend’s group. It clearly indicated that Hayek stood behind the couple even after the popular opinion turned against them during the course of the legal battle.

The outing happened the same day Hayek debuted on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition. They had their dinner at the Rh Rooftop restaurant. Hayek later told E! News that she had a great bond with the couple’s four kids. She shared, “I’m close to their kids.”

She further shared that she had been friends with Lively and Reynolds for “a very long time.” Her show of support goes a long way for the couple, whose names were dragged through the mud on social media amidst the legal battle.

Killer Buzz: The 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre Franchise' Bidding War
Image
Anatomy of a Revival Back in March, Deadline revealed that the intellectual property of ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ was officially back on the market. Verve- the agency holding the rights since 2017- has been quietly seeking creatives to lead what it’s calling a “multimedia strategy” for the franchise. Translation: not just films, but games, series, comics, and more. The franchise’s origin is almost as grimy as the film itself. Directed by Tobe Hooper and co-written with Kim Henkel, the original 1974 film was a guerrilla effort made for $140,000 in suffocating Texas heat, starring unknown actors, and produced by Exurbia Films. It was distributed by Bryanston Distributing Company- better known for launching the X-rated ‘Deep Throat’. ‘Chainsaw’ made $31 million at the box office, but its creators famously saw almost none of it. New Line Cinema acquired distribution rights in 1983 and oversaw the franchise’s uneasy expansion: nine films, two games,...

The Best Scream Sequel Was Almost Directed By The Creator Of A Major Kids' Franchise
Image
Robert Rodriguez's career as a director is a pretty weird one. In the 1990s, he was practically a cult film machine. After his first feature, "El Mariachi", came out in 1992, he delivered hit after hit like a boss. "Desperado" and "From Dusk Till Dawn" basically established the definition of coolness for any Millennial growing up while also championing Latino actors who went on to become some of the most iconic and successful of their generation. Changing gears in 1998, Rodriguez then made one of the most beloved (if critically panned) cult horror films of the '90s with "The Faculty." Three years later, he switched gears once more, this time developing a kids film out of nowhere ("Spy Kids") that not only rocked the box office (making nearly $150 million worldwide) but also gave rise to a half-billion-dollar franchise in the years that followed.

Whatever you thought about Rodriguez as a filmmaker at that time,...

30 Greatest Zombie Apocalypse Movies of All Time, Ranked
Image
Zombie movies have shuffled, sprinted, and slithered their way into almost every cinematic corner you can imagine. Sure, horror is their home base — all that moaning and munching kind of lends itself to scares — but the undead have a real knack for multitasking. Zombie movies aren’t just about scares and screams anymore.

They’ve taken on all kinds of wild and wonderful forms — from heartbreaking love stories and dark comedies to creepy, quiet tales and full-blown action-packed chaos. While some still stick to the classic horror vibes, others break all the rules and create something totally unexpected, sometimes weird, sometimes sad, and often surprisingly funny.

The best ones aren’t always the loudest or the goriest. Sometimes they’re slow burns. Sometimes they’re romantic. And sometimes, they’re just plain bizarre. But they all offer a new spin on the end of the world, where survival might not be about outrunning the dead,...
