Back to the Future: Easter Eggs you might have missed from the greatest time travel movie ever made!
Image
When it comes to the most durable pop-movies that not only hold up incredibly well but truly defy aging and get better over time, the appreciable value of Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future is hard to beat. Indeed, with the film celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2025, there is still no shortage of discoverable tidbits, buried Easter Eggs, and fascinating trivia associated with the landmark sci-fi teen time-travel adventure. Much of the movie’s hidden audiovisual treasure trove derives from what ranks among the finest screenplays ever written, with Zemeckis and Bob Gale carefully crafting meticulous details and subtle clues, hints, references, and affectionate homages to pop culture’s past and present. The result is a vivid paragon of franchise worldbuilding, with several peripheral nuances reinforcing the themes of Marty McFly and Doc Brown’s story while commenting on the societal mores of the 1950s and 1980s.

Breaking Baz: ‘Downton Abbey’s Elizabeth McGovern On Saying Goodbye To Lady Cora And Chronicling Ava Gardner On Stage
Image
Exclusive: Elizabeth McGovern is fired up when she talks about sensuous silver screen goddess Ava Gardner, whom the Downton Abbey star portrays in a stage show that hits New York next week. Gardner, she argues, endured the “objectification of the female body, which is the basis of the entire movie business.”

Being a movie star in the 1940s, 1950s and into the ’60s took its toll on Gardner, who escaped her mink-lined cage in California to spend her final years in England residing in a grand apartment close to Harrods’ department store.

Ava: The Secret Conversations, beginning at New York’s City Center on July 29, is based on a series of tapes the writer Peter Evans recorded with the one-time screen siren in London over a four-year period beginning in 1988 which he then had published in 2013, more than two decades after Gardner’s death in 1990.

The show moves to Chicago...

'Night at the Museum' Reboot Officially in the Works
Image
It's never too late for any franchise to make a comeback. Time has proven on many occasions that some properties are beloved enough that fans will welcome their return, and 20th Century Studios is hoping that will be the case with Night at the Museum, a family franchise that once brought in big box office for the studio during its heyday. It looks like another adventure is in the works, but it appears to be taking a retooled spin rather than being a mere sequel.

Per Deadline, a new Night at the Museum is being written by Tripper Clancy, and this will be a reimagining of the franchise rather than a follow-up to the last film. Story details are scarce, but it looks like the film will explore new characters at the museum, involved in a brand-new story. Shawn Levy, who directed the first three films, will produce for the 21 Laps banner,...

Robin Williams, Ben Stiller, Pierfrancesco Favino, Patrick Gallagher, Mizuo Peck, Rami Malek, and Crystal the Monkey in Night at the Museum (2006)
20th Century Studios wants to welcome audiences back to the enchanted Night at the Museum franchise with a reimagining from Die Hart and Stuber writer Tripper Clancy. 21 Laps tapped Clancy for the gig, keeping plot details under wraps. Shawn Levy and Dan Levine will produce via 21 Laps, with Emily Morris overseeing the project. While plot elements are scarce, Deadline says the Night at the Museum reimagining will feature a new story and all-new characters.

Shawn Levy directed 2006’s Night at the Museum, based on Milan Trenc’s 1993 children’s book. The original film stars Ben Stiller as Larry Daley, the new security guard at the Museum of Natural History. To Larry’s surprise, he discovers that an ancient curse causes the animals and exhibits on display to come alive and wreak havoc.

Night at the Museum struck gold in theaters, with a $574M global total. The 2009 sequel, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,...

The museum is open for business again.

A “Night at the Museum” reimagining is in the works at 20th Century Studios, with 21 Laps Entertainment tapping Tripper Clancy to pen the script.

Plot details remain under wraps, but it’s said the film will tell a fresh story at the museum with new characters. Shawn Levy and Dan Levine will produce for 21 Laps. Emily Morris will oversee the project for the company.

Clancy’s previous credits as a writer include “Stuber,” “I Am Not Okay With This,” “Die Hart” and “Die Hart 2: Die Harter.”

The “Night at the Museum” franchise, which kicked off in 2006, has spawned three follow-ups: “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” (2009), “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” (2014) and the animated feature “Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again” (2022). Levy directed the first three films, while Matt Danner helmed “Kahmunrah.”

Interview: Elizabeth McGovern on Embodying a Screen Legend in ‘Ava: The Secret Conversations’
Image
This summer at the New York City Center, Elizabeth McGovern will evoke the glamour of Golden Age Hollywood in Ava: The Secret Conversations as screen legend Ava Gardner. McGovern herself wrote the play, which is based on the 2013 biography The Secret Conversations by Gardner and Peter Evans. The book is stitched together from conversations that Evans had with the screen star between 1988 and 1990, the year of her death.

The play explores the unusual and often prickly collaboration between Gardner and Evans, whom she hired to ghostwrite her memoir. Though Gardner pulled the plug on the project before its completion, Evans eventually published their conversations in 2013, alongside his reflections on their sessions. Directed by Tony nominee Moritz von Stuelpnagel, the production also stars Aaron Costa Gannis as Evans. In addition to playing the journalist, Gannis channels Gardner’s three famous husbands: Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra.

Sign of Change: How Marlee Matlin Redefined Acting and Disability in Hollywood
Image
Sensitivity Warning: This article explores the evolving conversations around representation in Hollywood, including historically harmful practices of casting today. Its purpose is to reflect on where we’ve been- and where we’re going. The Question The most recent use of blackface in an American film I can think of is in ‘Tropic Thunder,’ where it’s deployed in a genius twist of satire: a white, Australian method actor (played by Robert Downey Jr.) undergoes a pigment-altering surgery to play an African-American man. To this day, the comedy catches major flack- arguably more flack than the character receives within the world of the movie- essentially being derided for what some argue is the fundamental reprehensibility of blackface, even when used as a device to mock the offensive practice itself. Alternatively, blackface has been employed metatextually, for the sake of misunderstanding- a fundamental comedic device that dates back to the Greeks.

Mickey Rooney and the Invention of the Teen Idol
Image
This essay is excerpted from Hollywood High: a Totally Epic, Way Opinionated History of Teen Movies, by Bruce Handy, out May 20 from Avid Reader Press.

Leap Day, 1940. The city: Los Angeles. The place: the Ambassador Hotel’s Cocoanut Grove nightclub, where Hollywood’s biggest names were gathered for the 12th annual Academy Awards ceremony. Among the stars smiling for the cameras: Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, Bette Davis, Spencer Tracy, Jimmy Stewart, Greer Garson, Hedy Lamar, and emcee Bob Hope.

Professional jealousy was not the evening’s theme, not officially. So surely no one resented the fact that by one important measure — the measure — the answer to the question: Who is the biggest star in the room? was . . . .

None of the above.

Just a month earlier, the nation’s theater owners had conducted their annual poll and named not Gable, not Davis, not Stewart, but the young,...

Image
The 1960s were a decade when the movie industry made leaps and bounds in terms of storytelling, technology, and expansion beyond the American borders. This era came up with so many fantastic films that it was hard to pick the ten ultimate 60s movie classics from among them. In our quest to find the top ten, we are sure that we may have missed quite a few fan-favorites.

However, the movies in this list are not just great films from the 60s, but also some of the greatest in cinema history. The classics of legendary directors like Roman Polanski, Alfred Hitchcock, and Stanley Kubrick have made it to this list. This list also features some of the best in the genres like horror, Western, rom-com, and sci-fi.

The Worst John Wayne Movie, According To Letterboxd Users
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Nothing about Dick Powell's 1956 historical epic "The Conqueror" went right. Firstly, and most obviously, the casting was horrid. John Wayne, America's racist uncle, was cast as Temujin, a.k.a. Genghis Khan, ruler of the Mongol Empire in the 12th century. His wife, Börte, was played by Susan Hayward. Other white actors playing Asian characters included Agnes Moorehead, William Conrad, and Lee Van Cleef.

Additionally, the production was immensely troubled. "The Conqueror" was filmed partly in the desert outside of St. George, Utah, and production was slowed by an unexpected flash flood. According to the book "The Fifty Worst Films of All Time" by Michael Medved, Harry Medved, and Randy Dreyfuss, Wayne was frequently drunk on set, inspiring his co-stars to match his drunken energy with silly, untethered performances of their own. The film's writer, Oscar Millard, however, said...

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg Have Been Asked to Remake ‘It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World’ ‘Every Three Years’ — but They Likely ‘Never Will’
Image
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg aren’t too crazy about the idea of remaking “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.”

The duo who co-created series “The Studio” said while in the Criterion Closet that they are constantly asked to revisit Stanley Kramer’s 1963 feature for a reboot. “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” starred Mickey Rooney, Sid Caesar, Ethel Merman, and more, and centered on a group of motorists who witness a car crash in the California desert that leads them on a rat race to find a hidden stash of loot.

“I feel like we’ve been asked to remake this movie a lot. This has come around several times,” Goldberg said of the film, to which Rogen replied, “Every three years we get a request to remake ‘It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.’ […] It actually has amazing physical comedy in it.”

However,...

Kaitlin Olson Says Fox Wanted Edgy Comedy, But They Weren’t Ready for ‘The Mick’
Image
Following the breakthrough success of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, every TV network in the 2010s wanted to emulate its crass, punchy, anarchic humor, but some networks weren’t ready to pay the troll toll.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Kaitlin Olson is finally enjoying her well-deserved moment in the spotlight now that she's smack-dab in the middle of the zeitgeist following two straight decades of TV excellence. Between the return of Hacks, the upcoming 17th season of Always Sunny and the swift renewal of High Potential, Olson is now ubiquitous in the TV world, despite the inability of some networks to make her distinct style of comedic performance work for their delicate, corporate sensibilities. While the ascension of Olson to the top of the TV A-list has been a long time coming, her road to multi-network superstardom wasn’t without its pitfalls, as anyone who watched the unjustly...

Which Categories Should the Oscars Add Next?
Image
When the 98th annual Oscars arrives next year, it will come with the addition of one long-desired new category: an Academy Award for Achievement in Casting. Two years later, the 100th annual Oscars will include its own new category: Achievement in Stunt Design. After that? We’ve got a few ideas for some other additions.

Both the casting and stunt design awards arrive after years of campaigning from artisans, filmmakers, stars, and even the general public. Make a good enough case, it seems, and AMPAS just might grant you an Oscar statuette-sized wish. Still, it does take time: Before the casting award was announced, the ceremony had not added a new award since 2001, when the organization added Best Animated Feature Film.

Last week’s announcement of the new stunt design category inevitably got us wondering: What other categories should the Oscars add? From bringing back an old favorite, cribbing from other awards shows,...

Original Night at the Museum star Jacob Cherry opens up about his heartwarming experiences on the movie set.

Speaking to People, Cherry, who portrayed Nick Daley, the son of Ben Stiller's Larry, sang high praises of his Night at the Museum co-star. And he was so hyped that he was in this cameo… so just stuff like that. I got to see him as just like a normal person. There was no mask or anything like that."

Based on Milan Trenc's 1993 children's book, Night at the Museum premiered in 2006 and quickly established itself as a fan-favorite, family-friendly comedy. The film starred Stiller as Larry Daley, a night-shift security guard at the American Museum...

A Hollywood Legend Was a Huge Pain While Guest Starring on ‘The Simpsons’
Image
Countless celebrities have lent their vocal talents to The Simpsons over the past 36 years, including several legit old Hollywood icons such as Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Lemmon and an 89-year-old Bob Hope, whose dialogue was recorded at his Silver Lake home with the help of a young Conan O’Brien.

But perhaps the most prominent Simpsons role to be played by a classic film star was Chester J. Lampwick, the impoverished creator of The Itchy & Scratchy Show’s Itchy, who was voiced by three-time Oscar nominee Kirk Douglas. And really, no scene in Spartacus comes close to the passionate rebellion Douglas showcases as Lampwick while refusing to paint Grampa Simpson’s chicken coop because the corn muffins he was compensated with were “lousy.”

But the late Douglas wasn’t always the easiest person to work with. He was labelled “difficult” by frequent co-star Burt Lancaster, and fought so bitterly with director Stanley Kubrick...

The New York production, directed by Moritz von Stuelpnagel and produced by Karl Sydow, begins performances July 30, with an official opening on August 7. Ava, which will also feature Aaron Costa Ganis as writer Peter Evans, will play a strictly limited engagement through September 13.

The synopsis: “At the height of the Golden Age of Cinema, starlet Ava Gardner sat for a series of interviews with writer Peter Evans for him to glean the juicy details about her life story, her marriages to Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra, and her turbulent relationship to Howard Hughes. Initially barred from publication, Evans’ account of a bygone era was published twenty-five years...

Scaring Is Caring: The Gateway Horrors of ‘The Care Bears Movie’ 40 Years Later
Image
It was in 1985 that the Care Bears had their first big-screen adventure. Those colorful, fuzzy do-gooders had already made the move to television, after previously going from greeting cards to plushies, but now their unwavering message of love had reached a wider audience. That original Care Bears film encapsulated the fundamentals of this lucrative franchise; syrupy songs fill in for plot, the general tone is sweet enough to form cavities, and essentially everything amounts to one long toy commercial. However, beneath the treacle sits the antithesis of the empathetic heroes. The villain of this story is still hard to shake off, on account of how she hissed her way into the nightmares of children everywhere. For that reason and others, The Care Bears Movie makes for a surprising source of gateway horror.

The term “gateway horror” is commonly used to describe a lot of adult horror that was first experienced as a young age.

The Academy Gave Walt Disney The Most Unique Oscars Trophy In History
Image
The Academy Awards may not always possess the best track record of commemorating the best films of any given year, but there's no doubt that winning an Oscar is a big deal. It's essentially a canonization in the annals of film history that provides insight into the cultural sphere at the time. But while tastes have certainly changed since the ceremony's inaugural banquet in 1929, most award recipients have received the same golden statue that just about everyone is familiar with.

The Oscar, weighing 8 ½ pounds and standing 13 ½ inches tall, has largely stuck to the design of a sword-wielding knight. According to The Academy, the gold-plated bronze bastion of cinematic excellence settles atop a reel of film, with each spoke representing the institution's five original branches. Its form is the result of MGM art director Cedric Gibbons and LA sculptor George Stanley. The award's simplicity is only matched by its iconographic symbol...

'Law & Order's Concept Was Based on the 1960s Series 'Arrest and Trial'
Image
Quick Links'Law & Order' vs. 'Arrest and Trial'How 'Law & Order' Managed to Stand Out

Dun-dun! The Law & Orderfranchise has been a part of our television landscape since 1990. The original series and its spin-offs comprise a whopping 67 seasons and over 1,300 episodes. As iconic as Law & Order is, it's hard to imagine that its concept was borrowed heavily from another series. That series was the 1960s similarly titled Arrest and Trial.

If you've never heard of this show, you're likely not alone. Arrest and Trial aired for a single season on ABC and blended elements of police procedurals and courtroom dramas. To be fair, Law & Order didn't copy Arrest and Trial's premise on purpose. The similarities were only discovered after Dick Wolf pitched the series. But rather than abandon the concept, Wolf and the team chose to retool while making some distinct changes. Still, without this little-known '60s series,...

Olive Sturgess, who appeared on about two dozen TV Westerns and got to act alongside Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre and Jack Nicholson in the Roger Corman 1963 cult horror spoof The Raven, died Feb. 19, her family announced. She was 91.

The Canadian-born starlet also was seen on such series as West Point, Perry Mason, Panic!, The Donna Reed Show, Hawaiian Eye, The Danny Thomas Show, Petticoat Junction, Dr. Kildare and Ironside, but TV Westerns dominated her résumé.

Slam dunk! Running Point release time on Netflix, preview and what to expect
Image
Make some way for Netflix! The streaming service is dribbling down the court and shooting nothing but straight buckets with its latest original comedy series. Kate Hudson might be best known for her romantic comedies on the big screen, but the Oscar-nominated movie star is tackling her first leading role in a comedy series with Netflix's new sitcom Running Point.

She's not the only big name attached to the series. There are plenty more familiar faces in the main and supporting cast, but behind the scene, there's an even bigger name. None other than The Office and The Mindy Project (not to mention Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives of College Girls) mastermind Mindy Kaling co-created the series, which she also writes and executive produces.

Ethan Hawke on Richard Linklater’s ‘Blue Moon’ and Playing Lorenz Hart: ‘Offensive Art’ Won’t Get Made Unless We ‘Demand’ It
Image
Richard Linklater is back at the Berlinale 11 years after he won the Silver Bear prize for his Oscar-winning “Boyhood,” this time with “Blue Moon,” a wistful chamber piece set on the opening night of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” in 1943. But the period comedy, which premieres in competition tonight at the festival, assumes the perspective of Lorenz Hart, the great American lyricist who was one half of Rodgers and Hart before a creative split.

The film takes place in or around the same bar at Sardi’s, where Rodgers (Andrew Scott) is greeting his rapturous public after the musical’s Broadway premiere while trying to keep a distance from his former creative collaborator, whose boozing and insecurities (and often wild overconfidence) make people uncomfortable. Ethan Hawke undergoes a unique physical transformation to give a theatrical but never overplayed performance as a five-foot-tall, sexually ambiguous alcoholic perched precariously on the wagon.

Joan Rivers’ 11 Spiciest Celebrity Burns
Image
“I hate everyone, starting with me.”

Hating the world wasn’t only an attitude for Joan Rivers — it was the subject of a 2012 book in which she filled 260 pages with comic vitriol. Some of her disdain was broad — “I hate children,” “I hate old people” and “I hate waiters who introduce themselves,” for example. But she saved plenty of venom for the celebrities who got under her skin. Here are 11 celebrities who got smacked around by Joan Rivers in I Hate Everyone… Starting with Me.

1 Tom Cruise

“No 5-foot-8 man, not even one who lives on a diet of Ritalin and gin, is happy like that all the time. He’s always got this shit-eating grin on his face, like he just got a note from his managers telling him that Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman are extending their confidentiality agreements.”

2 Goldie Hawn

This Is the Biggest Misconception About Hosting the Oscars, According to Conan O’Brien
Image
We’re less than a month away from the Academy Awards, which, to be honest, would be a lot more exciting if it wasn’t, like, the 50th awards show we’ve gotten in the past month.

But even if you’re sick to death of watching well-dressed millionaires hand each other trophies from the comfort of your Cheeto-encrusted futon, there’s one good reason to check out the Oscars this year: host Conan O’Brien.

As we’ve mentioned before, O’Brien seems like a great choice to host the Oscars. He’s funny, has lots of award show experience, and he once chatted about butthole gerbils with four-time Academy Award nominee Mickey Rooney. That’s got to count for something.

O’Brien has already discussed some aspects of how he will handle the March 2nd gig, and in a new interview, he’s revealed a key aspect of his approach to hosting award shows.

Timothée Chalamet is the youngest multiple Best Actor Oscar nominee since James Dean
Image
Youth is not wasted on the young, especially if you’re Timothée Chalamet. The A Complete Unknown star made Oscar history in more ways than one with his Best Actor nomination for the Bob Dylan biopic on Thursday.

Chalamet, who turned 29 on Dec. 27, is the youngest person to score multiple Best Actor nominations since James Dean. As writer and film historian Mark Harris first noted on Bluesky, both men accomplished this feat before the age of 30. Chalamet received his first bid at 22 for 2017’s Call Me by Your Name. Dean died at 24 in September 1955 in a car crash. Less than six months later, Dean received a posthumous nomination for East of Eden. He earned a second one the following year for Giant and remains the only performer to receive multiple posthumous nominations.

Chalamet is the youngest nominee in his category, which includes The Brutalist‘s Adrien Brody (51), Sing Sing‘s...

The 2025 Oscars haven’t even taken place yet, but Timothee Chalamet is already making history.

On Thursday (January 23), the Academy rolled out the nominations for the 2025 ceremony, which takes place on March 2. Timothee scored a Best Actor nod for his performance in A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan biopic.

This marks Timothee‘s second nomination in the Best Actor category before the age of 30. He is now one of the youngest actors to receive two nods in the category. Only two other stars have achieved this feat, and the last did so in the ’50s.

Keep reading to find out more…

According to reporting by Variety, James Dean was the last actor to receive two Best Actor nominations before the age of 30. He was posthumously nominated for East of Eden and Giant after passing away at the age of 24 in 1955.

With New Nomination, Timothée Chalamet Matches James Dean's Major Oscar Feat 68 Years Later
Image
Actor Timothée Chalamet has joined an elite club of actors who have achieved two Oscar nominations before the age of 30. The 29-year-old Chalamet, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in 2024’s A Complete Unknown as well as 2017’s Luca Guadagino film, Call Me By Your Name, is the second actor since James Dean to be nominated twice before turning 30. Per Variety, Dean, who died at the age of 24, was nominated for two Oscars posthumously.

Film journalist and historian Mark Harris noted Chalamet’s achievement on the social media platform, Bluesky. James Dean, who died in a car crash in 1955, was nominated for Oscars in both 1956 and 1957 for his roles in East of Eden (1955) and Giant (1956). Before Dean, the late Mickey Rooney was the only other man to earn two Oscar nods in the leading actor category before the age of 30. Rooney was nominated for Babes in Arms...

Timothée Chalamet Follows James Dean as Youngest Two-Time Oscar Best Actor Nominee
Image
Timothée Chalamet, after netting a best actor Oscar nomination for his role in A Complete Unknown on Thursday, has become the youngest multiple best actor nominee since James Dean.

On Thursday, film historian Mark Harris on his Bluesky account noted Chalamet had become the first to nab two best actor nominations from the Academy before turning 30, but only after following Dean.

The Hollywood icon, who died in a car crash in 1955 when he was 24, that same year received an Oscar nomination as the young hero in Elia Kazan’s screen version of John Steinbeck’s novel East of Eden. Dean got a second posthumous nom for 1956’s Giant movie. Dean had been driving in his Porsche Spyder when he got into a head-on collision on a California highway, causing his untimely death.

Dean also died a month before the release of his most memorable movie, Rebel Without a Cause, where he played disaffected,...

Timothée Chalamet at an event for 82nd Golden Globe Awards (2025)
Timothée Chalamet Becomes Youngest Two-Time Best Actor Nominee Since James Dean
Timothée Chalamet at an event for 82nd Golden Globe Awards (2025)
When 29-year-old Timothée Chalamet earned his second Oscar nomination for playing a young Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown,” he stepped into one of the most rarefied clubs in Academy Award history: Men who’ve received two leading actor nominations before they’ve turned 30.

As first noted by film journalist and historian Mark Harris on Bluesky, the last actor to achieve this feat was James Dean, who was posthumously nominated in back-to-back years for 1955’s period family drama “East of Eden” and 1956’s Western drama “Giant” after he died in a car accident at 24. Prior to Dean, the only other man to earn two nominations in the leading category in their 20s was Mickey Rooney, who was nominated for best actor at 19 for the 1939 Busby Berkeley musical “Babes in Arms,” and then again four years later at 23 for “The Human Comedy”.

When Chalamet earned his first best actor nomination for...

Real Reason Formerly Pro-Meghan Markle Vanity Fair Slammed Duchess of Sussex Revealed
Image
The formerly pro-Meghan Markle publication, Vanity Fair, recently slammed the Sussexes and analyzed the past five years since they stepped down as working royals and moved to the US.

The article was in last week’s edition of the magazine. Vanity Fair obviously isn’t too keen on Meghan Markle anymore.

Vanity Fair Was Only Interested In Meghan Markle When She Was Harry’s Girlfriend

The magazine scored a significant win in October 2017 when they interviewed Prince Harry’s then-girlfriend as everyone was clamoring to talk to her at the time.

Meghan’s appeared on the cover. She hired PR advisor Keleigh Thomas Morgan from the celebrity favorite firm, Sunshine Sachs.

Meghan purportedly accused Vanity Fair of printing a “racist headline.” The Sussexes thought the title, “I’m Just Wild About Harry,” was racist because a song with the same name appeared in a 1939 movie with Judy Garland and...

‘Grand Theft Hamlet’ Review: There’s Something Rousing in the State of San Andreas
Image
There are, at a minimum, and I checked, 18 bazillion adaptations of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” It’s one of the most beloved and scrutinized texts in the whole of the English language.

More actors than anyone can count — strike that, I guess there’ve been 18 bazillion — have put their stamp on this 425-year-old play about a prince and his revenge against his conspiring, murderous uncle. The words “to be or not to be” are emblazoned within the global lexicon, preserving forever Shakespeare’s complex thoughts about ending one’s own life, as generation after generation of performers and directors put their own stamp on perhaps the most well-worn dramatic material humanity has.

But I’ve never seen a “to be or not to be” speech quite like the one in “Grand Theft Hamlet.” It is now a speech about life spoken to lifeless automatons, frequently interrupted by real-life jerks who murder the actor mid-speech.

Dana Carvey Thinks He’s Got Chevy Chase All Figured Out
Image
Dr. Dana Carvey stroked his chin this week on the Fly on the Wall podcast, certain that he’d diagnosed the personality disorder that makes Chevy Chase difficult to work with. Chase has been a Fly on the Wall guest in the past, and it was prior to that conversation that Carvey developed his Unified Theory of Chevy Chase.

“I kind of figured him out,” Carvey told David Spade and Chase’s Community costar Joel McHale. “He has an impulse to say the thing you’re not supposed to say, even if it goes into territory that you cannot even comprehend he’s going there. But he has an impulse to do that.”

Armed with his theory, Carvey knew exactly the right method for approaching Chase’s interview. “I just sort of went with it,” he explained. “(Chase) would do all this shock stuff, and I just started finding it...

Chevy Chase Would ‘Lose His Mind’ When the ‘Community’ Cast Was Funnier Than He Was
Image
While Chevy Chase definitely won’t be in the upcoming Community movie — unless one of the characters happens to pull out a photo of their dead friend who masturbated himself into an early grave several years ago — its cast members are still fielding questions about the Caddyshack star.

Joel McHale recently appeared on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast, and while McHale never appeared on Saturday Night Live, his relationship with Chevy was obviously an area of interest for the two former SNLers.

Spade asked if Chase’s bad behavior on the set of Community was “more of a rumor, or was he a bit of a pickle?” — possibly because Spade hasn’t used the internet in the past 11 years. “I’ve never answered any questions about him,” McHale joked before going on to describe just how frustrating Chase was to work with.

“He didn’t want to be there,...

The Oscars Need To Bring Back An Award Last Given To A 14 Year Old 64 Years Ago
Image
The Oscars stopped giving out a specific kind of award 64 years ago, but the idea behind the Honorary Academy Award could be tweaked to reflect an often overlooked kind of performer. Over the course of 97 years, the Academy Awards have shifted and changed with the times. This meant some categories have been added to the ceremony, while others have been changed. Some potential Oscar categories (like stunts) have been suggested to be included in future Academy Award ceremonies, broadening the chances for a larger variety of films and performances to be celebrated by the Academy in the future.

The history of the Oscars includes unique categories, including informal ones like the Juvenile Academy Awards. An idea that actually predates major categories like Best Supporting Actor and Actress, those Honorary Awards were a chance for the Oscars to celebrate young performers who didn't stand much of a chance to win the major awards.
