Tales Of The Underworld Reveals A Key Star Wars Book Scene We Never Thought We'd See
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld."

"Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld" is the latest entry in an animated anthology series composed of mini-episodes that more deeply explore the backgrounds of some of our favorite "Star Wars" characters. Sometimes, it bridges gaps, while at other times, it reveals secrets. The first season, "Tales of the Jedi," provided us with more insight into Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) and Count Dooku (Corey Burton). The second season, "Tales of the Empire," similarly gave us a closer look at Barris Offee (Meredith Salenger) and Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto).

In that same vein, "Tales of the Underworld" brings Asajj Ventress (Nika Futterman) and Cad Bane (Burton) into focus. Asajj is a curious character at the moment, as she has had a very interesting gap in her history that hasn't exactly been explained until now. The canonical 2015 novel "Star Wars: Dark Disciple,...

#Xodus: Bluesky Hits 20M Users as People Continue to Flee X
Image
A trickle is becoming a flood for Bluesky, the social media company that has seen spectacular growth since the presidential election. On Tuesday, the microblogging platform hit 20 million users, after averaging 1 million new users per day over the past five days.

According to a Nov. 13 post by Bluesky CEO Jay Graber, the site had 6 million users in late August, nearly 11 million in late October and hit 15 million users on Nov. 15. It added another 5 million users in just five days, with the explosive growth seen since Nov. 5, the day of the election, accelerating.

Bluesky has been one of the main beneficiaries of millions of users leaving Elon Musk’s X, as the site formerly known as Twitter descends into a mess of bots, extreme content, crypto scams, ads, pornography, racism, transphobia and misinformation.

Hollywood has been quick to adopt Bluesky, particularly with the entertainment industry’s aversion to the political views of Musk,...

“Bluesky Has the Juice”: Celebrities Flee “Toxic” X for Rival Social Media Site
Image
Call it a blue wave. A host of actors, directors, musicians, journalists and other prominent people are dumping X (formerly Twitter) and flocking to social media platform Bluesky.

In the past week, an increasing number of bold-faced names have announced that they plan to post less on X, or leave the platform altogether, citing myriad issues with the social media company, including far right content, hate speech, transphobia, racism, harassment, pornography, crypto scams, bots and the political views of owner Elon Musk, the billionaire oligarch who is a vocal supporter and financial backer of Donald Trump.

Musk’s ownership of X and his updates to content moderation on the platform have been pushing brands and media groups closer and closer to the exit. This week, The Guardian media group announced that it will stop posting on X, describing the site as a “toxic media platform.” On Nov. 4, the Berlin Film...

EP Patton Oswalt Boards Oscar Contender Short ‘Sardinia’, Starring Martha Plimpton, Philip Ettinger
Image
Exclusive: Patton Oswalt has joined Oscar-qualified short film Sardinia as executive producer, along with his wife, actress Meredith Salenger.

The dark satirical short, written and directed by Paul Kowalski (Paper Tiger), stars Philip Ettinger as a deeply serious man battling a deadly laughing plague alongside Emmy winner Martha Plimpton. Olek Krupa, Breeda Wool and Sorel Carradine also star.

“Sardinia takes less than twenty minutes of your life to watch, but then takes up days and weeks of your brain-space when you’re done. It’s that rich, that stinging, that deep,” Oswalt said in a statement. “What Paul Kowalski does, with equal measures of hilarity and horror, is show the world go quickly off-kilter—and the subsequent ‘correction’ to ‘normality’ makes this worse. If this sounds familiar, keep in...

5 Deep Cut Horror Movies to Seek Out in August 2024
Image
New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features five selections reflecting the month of August 2024.

Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.

This month’s offerings include a horror take on a classic fairy tale, a creature-feature, and more.

Dead Kids (1981)

Dead Kids a.k.a. Strange Behavior (1981)

Directed by Michael Laughlin.

While College Colors Day (August 30) is a time to be proud of your alma mater, the students and faculty of Galesburg University likely feel less spirited after the events of Dead Kids. In this sci-fi/horror chiller, college experiments on a Midwestern community’s young people result in murder. Several, in fact. The guinea pigs’ homicidal impulses amount to a few rather creepy sequences in this “bad science” slasher.

Dead Kids, also known as Strange Behavior, is...

"I lit the fuse, and now we watch Wheeler burn..." Uh oh! This sounds dangerous. Ben and his slacker friend Tanner decide to play a prank on their high school physics teacher Mrs. Wheeler. When she fails the entire class after someone cheats on a test, they teach the demanding instructor a lesson by falsely accusing her of murder on social media. Of course, it ends up spinning wildly out of control. What will happen next? The film stars Egot winner Rita Moreno, with Connor Kalopsis, Ramona Young, Keith David, Kate Flannery,...

19 Years After Revenge Of The Sith, Star Wars Has Learned To Fear General Grievous Again
Image
Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Tales of the Empire episode 1, "Path of Fear"

Star Wars reestablishes how fearsome General Grievous truly is with his new Tales of the Empire appearance. Grievous's terrifying massacre showcases his lethal combat skills with no desire for a cowardly retreat. Tales of the Empire brings back the truly fearsome Grievous with nods to his brutal past from the 2D Clone Wars micro-series.

Star Wars has finally remembered to truly fear General Grievous 19 years after Revenge of the Sith thanks to Tales of the Empire. Making a horrifying appearance in the new series' very first episode, Star Wars has recaptured what truly made Grievous such a frightening villain (despite his canonical cowardice). Featuring nods to his very first Star Wars appearance even before Revenge of the Sith, General Grievous is the embodiment of fear for a very important reason.

‘Star Wars: Tales of the Empire’: What Happened to [Spoiler]?
Image
[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Star Wars: Tales of The Empire Episodes 4, 5 and 6.] The subject of Barriss Offee’s (voiced by Meredith Salenger) whereabouts after the fall of the Republic has long been a debated subject among Star Wars fans. Some thought she’d managed to escape prison and saved Grogu… which turned out not to be the case. Some thought she’d show up in Ahsoka as an antagonist for her former friend to battle… which turned out not to be the case. Others, still, hypothesized that the disgraced former Jedi might’ve become an Inquisitor… and they were right. But Tales of the Empire proved that turning to the Dark Side was only part of Barriss’ story. As of the end of the final episode, we’re left conflicted about Barriss—and, again, we’re not sure whether she survived. Let’s break it down. Disney+ Did Barriss Offee Die? That’s the...

Star Wars: Tales Of The Empire May Set The Stage For A Villain's Redemption
Image
There will be spoilers for "Star Wars: Tales of the Empire," so beware.

First introduced in the limited "Obi-Wan Kenobi" TV series that debuted in 2002 on Disney+, the Fourth Sister was an early member of the Inquisitorius and helped hunt down Jedi for many years during the Dark Times. Little is known about her past, other than that she was once a Jedi who turned to the dark side and the safety of the Empire after the events of Order 66. A humanoid with greenish skin and head tails, the Fourth Sister remains largely a mystery. Thanks to the new "Star Wars: Tales of the Empire" animated shorts, we have some more details about her and her past -- and also many hints about her future.

The other "villain" that features in these stories is Barriss Offee, the young Mirialan Padawan who framed Ahsoka Tano for murder in "Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Star Wars: Tales From The Empire Finally Reveals The Fate Of Defected Jedi Barriss Offee
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: Tales of the Empire."

The fate of the fallen Jedi Barriss Offee (voiced by Meredith Salenger) has been an enduring mystery after "The Clone Wars" season 5 finale, and the green Mirialan's tumultuous history made her ripe for a continued story in the "Star Wars" universe. Disgruntled by the Jedi Order's involvement in the Clone Wars, the then-padawan bombed the Jedi Temple and framed her bestie Ahsoka Tano (voiced by Ashley Eckstein). Said treachery instigated Ahsoka's departure from the Jedi Order, highlighting the spread of disillusionment within the Order.

As the supervising director of "Clone Wars," Dave Filoni nearly killed off Barriss, but then he cut the scene where she commits a suicide bombing in her Republic jail cell. Considering the lengths Filoni went to keep a secret of "Star Wars Rebels" from the crew, a league of Barriss Truthers saw her as...

After losing everything, young Morgan Elsbeth navigates the expanding Imperial world toward a path of vengeance, while former Jedi Barriss Offee does what she must to survive a rapidly changing galaxy. The choices they make will define their destinies.

Star Wars: Tales Of The Empire
Image
Streaming on: Disney+

Episodes viewed: 6 of 6

“Size matters not,” Yoda once told us. And so, while Tales Of The Empire — the second anthology of canonical Star Wars animated shorts, following the 2022 collection Tales Of The Jedi — consists of just six bite-sized instalments, running between 10 and 15 minutes each, it’s not to be overlooked. This is short, powerful, punchy storytelling in the Star Wars galaxy, hooking onto under-explored characters and offering narrative morsels that thread together decades of disparate threads.

Last time, the focus was on the fall of Count Dooku and pivotal moments in the life of Ahsoka Tano. Here, the first three episodes are devoted to Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) — the Beskar-spear-swinging Magistrate first introduced in The Mandalorian Season 2, later revealed as a former Dathomir witch intent on heralding the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn in Ahsoka – as she loses everything, and finds new purpose in the embrace of the Empire.

Star Wars Star Describes How Barriss Offee's Clone Wars Carries Over Into Tales of the Empire
Image
The choices Barriss Offee made during the Clone Wars are the same ones that drive her in Star Wars: Tales of the Empire, to various degrees.

In a conversation with StarWars.com, actor Meredith Salenger spoke about getting the chance to revisit Barriss' story after more than a decade and why her prior crimes, however heinous, make her no less empathic. "I think Barriss has been struggling with wanting to do the right thing and then truly going about it in the worst way. She was trying to fight to stop this violent military operation, and yet she used violence to make her point," the Star Wars: The Clone Wars star reflected, adding, "Being thrown in jail gave her ample opportunity to sit and stew on her emotions and that's where we find her at the beginning of Tales of the Empire."

Tales of the Empire Review: A Deep Dive into the Dark Side's Soul
Image
The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: Tales of the Empire, now streaming on Disney+.

2022's Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi offered fans a look at two characters who were at once products of the Jedi Order's beliefs and victims of its hubris. Great Jedi Knights like Anakin Skywalker taught Ahsoka Tano, yet walked away from the Jedi Order when the institution failed to be there in her greatest time of need; Count Dooku, who died a ruthless Sith Lord, was once a respectable Jedi Master swayed to the Dark Side by the Galactic Republic's ongoing corruption and a genuine desire to fight it when the Jedi themselves wouldn't. It was a brief yet fun anthology experiment, exploring how similar tragedies could influence people yet walk very different paths depending on how their ideals were tested. Star Wars: Tales of the Empire is the funhouse mirror version of Tales of the Jedi.

Per Collider, Diana Lee Inosanto spoke at Calgary Expo 2024 about getting the chance to voice her Ahsoka villain in Disney's upcoming anthology series and pull back the curtain on the Imperial Magistrate's tragic origin. During the interview, she acknowledged the "unique" manner in which Elsbeth's past was revealed, being "a new character that started off in live-action, so, in many ways, I felt that this character might have been still evolving. Things were kind of spoon-fed." She also praised showrunner Dave Filoni for the ideas he brought to Elsbeth's story and connecting them to other Star Wars media, noting, "his fingerprint is all over this. With its extensive library of classic Disney films, as well as its Marvel and Star Wars IP, the streaming platform could rightfully serve as a one-stop shop for many families. Given the numerous animated offerings the streaming service has available, its certainly a go-to destination for many households. That being said, next month has nothing but new and returning animated series headed to the streaming service, as well as a classic series adults will certainly love.

As May looms closer, it should be no surprise that Disney+ will have a new Star Wars offering, which children, as well as parents, will surely enjoy. Two other shows returning to the platform will likely only appeal to children. Parents hoping to watch either one with their kids will certainly find them amusing as well, given their ties to popular Disney brands.

Tales of the Empire Could Confirm a Theory About a Star Wars Villain
Image
Tales of the Empire sees Barriss Offee return to Star Wars for the first time since the end of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. After being introduced as a Jedi Padawan and friend of Ahsoka Tano, Barriss ended up a villain on The Clone Wars, attacking the Jedi Temple and framing Ahsoka. Fans have speculated that Barriss may meet her demise in Tales of the Empire at the hands of Darth Vader, but the theory begs the question if Anakin Skywalker still bears a grudge.

The upcoming Star Wars series Tales of the Empire is about to lift the veil on two of Star Wars' most enigmatic villains. Following in the footsteps of previous animated anthology series, Tales of the Jedi, Tales of the Empire -- debuting on May 4, 2024 -- will see key moments play out in the lives of Morgan Elsbeth and Barriss Offee. Elsbeth was first introduced in The Mandalorian,...

Nearly a year after it was first announced, we have a first look at the new season, now named Tales of the Empire.

All Our Ahsoka Marrok Theories Were Wrong, But Now Star Wars Is Finally Revealing The Truth
Image
Ahsoka left Marrok's true identity a mystery, because he was just a resurrected corpse. Tales of the Empire will finally reveal his true history. This show presents a chance to make up for Marrok's disappointing role in Ahsoka and delve into his origin story for fans.

The Ahsoka Disney+ TV show introduced the mysterious Imperial Inquisitor named Marrok, and Star Wars: Tales of the Empire will essentially serve as his origin story. Viewers were thrilled when the first Ahsoka trailers showed Anakin Skywalker's Padawan locked in combat with an Imperial Inquisitor called Marrok. Naturally, it didn't take long for audiences to begin speculating about who he could be. In the end, though, all those theories were disproven.

Shockingly, the Marrok of Ahsoka was in fact a reanimated corpse - resurrected through the use of Lady Morgan Elsbeth's Nightsister magick. It was initially unclear whether Marrok had ever existed in the first place,...

Star Wars: Tales Of The Empire Trailer Teases Vader, Thrawn And Grievous
Image
As Yoda himself once said, "Always two there are, no more, no less… A master and an apprentice." That might now apply to animated anthologies that tie into other in-universe Star Wars stories, because following 2022's Tales Of The Jedi, we now have its dark twin, Tales Of The Empire. Check out the trailer for the new series:

Created and written once again by Dave Filoni (who also serves as supervising director), this, as the title might lead you to believe, features stories from the point of view of the Galactic Empire. We follow two warriors on divergent paths in different eras. One, Morgan Elsbeth channels the loss of everything and everyone she loves into a seething anger that offers the Imperial forces (especially Lars Mikkelsen's Thrawn) something they can exploit.

There is also former Jedi Barriss Offee (Meredith Salenger) who is forced to do whatever it takes to survive a rapidly changing galaxy.

There are two sides to every story, but nothing is ever really black and white, good versus evil, or even Jedi versus Empire.

Star Wars Turns Its Eye To The Dark Side In The Tales Of The Empire Trailer
Image
Lucasfilm has revealed the first teaser trailer for "Star Wars: Tales of the Empire." Though not exactly a season 2, per se, this serves as a follow-up to 2022's acclaimed "Tales of the Jedi." That show was a series of animated shorts that focused on two interwoven tales of Jedi at crucial times in their development, namely Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku before he fell to the dark side. Similarly, this new series will be focusing on two different figures within the Empire: Morgan Elsbeth and former Jedi Barriss Offee. Check it out for yourself above.

This trailer offers a lot for hardcore "Star Wars" fans to dig into. We're going to be learning a lot more about Morgan Elsbeth, who fans of "Ahsoka" will be familiar with. We're also going to get more of Grand Admiral Thrawn in his younger years. Meanwhile, "Clone Wars" and prequel fans are going to dive deeper with Barriss Offee,...
