Eight Legs, Two Fangs and an Attitude: ‘Arachnophobia’ Turns 35
Image
Arachnophobia, an intense fear of spiders, ranks high among the most common phobias. There’s something about the eight-legged arthropods that sends a large percentage of the population into a panic. It probably doesn’t help that some are incredibly venomous, or that there’s upwards of tens of thousands of different species. Yet, whether it’s because arachnophobia is so prevalent or that the tiny creepy crawlers are tough to capture on-screen plausibly, horror movies featuring spiders is a more niche category. The high pinnacle of which is Arachnophobia, released in theaters on July 18, 1990. It’s the perfect blend of humor and horror, and practical effects with live spiders set the bar so high for spider horror that it’s still yet to be surpassed thirty-five years later.

An impressive directorial debut by executive producer Frank Marshall, Arachnophobia opens with a gorgeous trip to the Venezuelan rainforest. A photographer tags along with entomologist Dr.

Seneca Review: A Philosopher’s Garish Final Act
Image
Robert Schwentke’s “Seneca – On the Creation of Earthquakes” ushers audiences into the fraught final hours of Lucius Annaeus Seneca, the Roman philosopher, playwright, and statesman. With John Malkovich embodying the titular figure, the narrative unfolds as Emperor Nero, Seneca’s former pupil, decrees his mentor’s death.

The film anchors itself in the familiar terrain of ancient Rome, yet from its inception, a current of the unconventional, a distinctly theatrical sensibility, courses beneath the surface, suggesting that historical representation here will be anything but staid.

What follows is an examination of a man confronting mortality under the capricious shadow of absolute power, a historical episode reimagined with a peculiar, disquieting verve.

The Philosopher as Performer

The Seneca presented is a creature of immense intellectual vanity, a renowned mind whose philosophical pronouncements are matched only by his profound self-absorption. Once the guiding hand to a young Nero, he now faces...

Body Odyssey Review: The Sculpted Abyss
Image
Body Odyssey opens on Mona immersed in ritualized training, each clang of iron and hiss of steroids marking her devotion to a form that exceeds usual human scale. We meet her through a clinical lens—long takes of muscle fibers contracting, close‑ups of injected syringes—yet beneath this precision lies a surreal undercurrent, as if we’ve stepped into an experimental French New Wave gym.

Mona’s quest for the Miss Body Universe crown drives every scene. Early moments anchor us in her disciplined routine: dawn lifts, calorie counts, whispered self‑affirmations. As her regimen intensifies, the film shifts structure, intercutting her present labors with flickering memories of solitude and brief encounters with Nic, the younger man whose fleeting warmth unsettles her equilibrium. These nonlinear glimpses of longing fracture the narrative, inviting us to assemble Mona’s psyche from shards of image and sound.

Tricarico stakes her claim in body‑horror–tinged cinema,...

‘Society’ Writer Peels Back the Layers of His ’80s Cult Classic in ‘The Darkside of Society’ Documentary
Image
In 1989, Brian Yuzna made his directorial debut on Society. 35 years later, screenwriter Zeph E. Daniel peels back the layers to share his chilling truth behind the notorious cult classic in a new documentary.

The Darkside of Society will be released digitally May 13 from Uncork’d Entertainment.

Society‘s surreal and grotesque portrayal of elite depravity stunned audiences and secured its place as a horror essential. But while the film’s infamous “shunting” scene left an indelible mark on genre fans, its writer was enduring a very real psychological unraveling behind the scenes.

A raw, unfiltered examination of art, memory, and the dark corners of the creative process, the doc explores Daniel’s revelation that the film’s twisted plot was more autobiographical than he ever intended — a subconscious manifestation of repressed childhood trauma.

It features interviews with Yuzna, Society special effects designer Screaming Mad George, Color Out of Space director Richard Stanley,...

Body horror meets psychological drama in Body Odyssey, releasing on DVD and Digital on May 27 from IndiePix Films.

Professional bodybuilder Jacqueline Fuchs stars alongside Julian Sands in one of his final roles prior to his death in 2023.

Miss Body Universe contender Mona is a 45-year-old champion bodybuilder whose entire existence is a spasmodic quest for perfection and beauty. Her daily schedule is carefully followed by her obsessive coach, Kurt, who rigorously monitors her every action like a demiurge: her sleep, her nutrition, her training, her doping, her psychology and even her sexual life.

Remake of Iconic 35-Year-Old Spider Horror Movie Halts Development (& the Reason Why Will Make Fans Curious)
Image
As Hollywood's trend of reboots and remakes continues, horror fans had been expecting a new version of the 1990 film Arachnophobia to be remade by filmmaker Christopher Landon.

Back in 2022, reports emerged that Arachnophobia was getting a remake written and directed by Landon. There hadn't been any major updates shared about the project since, and in a new interview with Vanity Fair, Landon confirmed that the remake has been shelved. Curiously, he said that the reason the project fizzled out was because there was a certain "component" that made studio heads start to feel "uncomfortable" about moving forward. Landon said his unwillingness to remove this aspect from the film resulted in the project getting scrapped.

“There was a component that the studio was very nervous about and uncomfortable with—and that’s where we parted," he said. "I wasn’t willing to compromise on that. I wasn’t going to make...

‘Arachnophobia’ – Christopher Landon Explains Why His Remake Isn’t Happening
Image
As you may recall, it was announced back in 2022 that Christopher Landon would be directing a new take on Arachnophobia, and while it seems like Amblin and James Wan’s Atomic Monster are still planning to remake the classic film, Landon reveals in a new chat with The Wrap that his take on the material has been scrapped.

What happened? Creative differences, according to Landon.

The filmmaker explained to The Wrap, “I wrote a script that I loved. I actually think it was one of my best. But the problem with that is that you still have to deal with other people who have different opinions about what kind of movie we should be making. This was a classic case of creative differences and it was something that I was not willing to change.”

“Everybody moved on and that was just the way that it went. But at least it was a calm separation,...

'Seneca' with John Malkovich in Ancient Rome Sets Release
Image
When considering who could play an ancient Roman philosopher, few great actors come to mind more quickly than John Malkovich. He has the ability to easily slide into regal, careful, sometimes pompous, sometimes painfully self-aware performances befitting of archaic geniuses. From the trailer and images, it looks like he's bringing all that to his portrayal of the eponymous stoic in the film Seneca (also known as Seneca: On the Creation of Earthquakes). Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, acquired the VOD rights to the historical drama, also featuring Geraldine Chaplin and Tom Xander. While it was filmed years ago, it will finally be available in North America on digital platforms, cable, and satellite platforms, as well as on DVD, starting April 8, 2025. Watch the trailer below:

Seneca also stars Tom Xander (‘Nero’), Geraldine Chaplin (‘Cecelia’), Mary-Louise Parker (‘Agrippina’), and the late, great...

'Superman' Rumor Name-Checks Tom Cruise-Level Star Playing Jor-El
Image
The debut of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s live-action Dcu is creeping ever closer, and that means that rumors of what fans can expect are ramping up with it. One big rumor – and it is just a rumor, so let’s not all wet our pants on the outside yet – is that there is one cameo appearance by a big A-lister in Superman that has not yet been unveiled.

Let’s kick this off by saying the original rumor comes from Hollywood insider, Jeff Sneider, so everyone get your salt buckets ready. With that in mind, the suggestion is that Gunn has enlisted a big star to make a small appearance in the summer blockbuster as Superman’s father, Jor-El. While Sneider tosses around names like the child-catcher handing out sweets to unsuspecting children, with the likes of Tom Cruise and Chris Pratt being name-checked, the likelihood of either...

On Another World with You: The Romance of “Janet Planet”
Image
Janet Planet. The image is tough to see until our eyes adjust: a girl, not yet a teenager, perched on the edge of a bed, alone, ensconced in darkness, her head bisected by the edge of the frame. She’s looking. Is it at something, or for something? She gets up, walks outside, the deafening susurrus of cicadas all around her. She makes a call on a payphone, announces herself as Lacy. “I’m gonna kill myself,” she deadpans into the receiver. A pause. “I said I’m gonna kill myself if you don’t come get me.” She hangs up.This is the first sequence of Janet Planet (2024), the first film by Annie Baker—and it immediately exhibits the qualities of her formidable work as a playwright: the curious quiet, the felt time, the mordant sense of humor. Like Kenneth Lonergan before her, Baker is a celebrated stage dramatist...

David Lynch's Daughter Made 1 of the Worst Thrillers Ever — & Also 1 of the Best
Image
Being the child of an iconic artist like David Lynch comes with a lot of pressure, especially if you plan on making movies. Jennifer Lynch's Golden Raspberry-winning erotic thriller Boxing Helena bombed hard at the box office and took a beating from critics who couldn't stomach its outrageous story about a rogue surgeon who removes a woman's limbs. The young director went dark for 15 years after this distressing experience — but she returned with the stunningly original Surveillance, a must-see for fans of mind-bending horror.

Besides having big shoes to fill, Jennifer Lynch was just 19 years old when she began production on the movie that would thrust her into the public eye. Boxing Helena was a big swing in every way, and whether or not she deserved her Razzie for Worst Director, it remains a fascinating example of extreme cinema that could only come from a truly daring filmmaker. 15 years...

Under Paris (2024)
The Last Breath (2024) Ending Explained – Which of Noah’s Friends Survive till the End?
Under Paris (2024)
2024 seems to be the year of shark thrillers! After making a sensational return in “Under Paris” (2024), they once again come back to thrill us in “The Last Breath” (2024), directed by Joachim Hedenis. Although the sharks don’t show up until quite late into the movie, when they do, they are traveling at lightning speed and only show interest in human blood. All the while, a group of five friends try to escape from the ruins of a sunken WWII ship discovered somewhere off the coast of a Caribbean island.

If you choose the willing suspension of disbelief, this film has a lot to like. However, the Jaws references, and the CGI sharks almost make you want to scream ‘Cute’ after every 10 minutes in the second half of the film. “The Last Breath” (2024) is fun if you let underwater claustrophobia entertain you, and if you have watched it already, here’s...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus's Favorite Movies Will Make You Emotional
Image
Julia Louis-Dreyfus began her career in comedy, as so many comedians do, with the Second City, the stalwart and long-lived comedy troupe based in Chicago. She was only 21, but Louis-Dreyfus gave such an impressive performance at a Second City event that she was immediately asked to join the cast of "Saturday Night Live." It seems that NBC talent scouts lurk at Second City performances all the time. She starred on "SNL" from 1982 until 1985, becoming friends with writer Larry David during her tenure. A few years later, David and comedian Jerry Seinfeld created the sitcom "Seinfeld," wherein Louis-Dreyfus starred as Jerry's friend Elaine.

"Seinfeld," once might recall, was something of a hit, lasting 180 episodes over nine seasons. Louis-Dreyfus was nominated for seven Emmys, winning one. She would go on to win another Emmy for her performance in "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and an additional nine Emmys for "Veep," eight of them for acting.

Tom Cruise Gave One of His Best Performances in Interview with the Vampire

Quick Links Tom Cruise's Previous Work Made Him an Unlikely Choice for the Role Tom Cruise Earns Raves for His Turn as Lestat

Tom Cruise is known for his death-defying stunts nowadays, but during the heyday of his career, the actor challenged himself in ways that easily made him one of the best actors working in Hollywood. Cruise always wanted to challenge himself and take on roles that were different from one to the next, and that proved to be very true when he took on the role of Lestat de Lioncourt in 1994's Interview with the Vampire. At the time, no one questioned his abilities as an actor, but Cruise hadn't played a villain before, and, on paper, it didn't feel like a part suited to his strengths. There were many doubters, including the author of the source material herself, but the result turned into one of his...

Two years have gone by since we learned that Elizabeth Hurley (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery) had signed on to star in Piper, a new horror film from director Anthony Waller. Back in 1995, director Waller made an impressive breakthrough with the thriller Mute Witness… then quickly squandered the good will he had earned with that movie by following it up with An American Werewolf in Paris. Waller has made a couple movies since the Paris debacle...

Cory Hardrict's 10 Best Movies & TV Shows Ranked
Image
Cory Hardrict is a prolific TV and movie actor who has appeared in numerous productions over the years and, in the last decade or so, he's managed to break out into more leading roles. Born on November 9, 1979, Hardrict began his career at a young age, playing minor characters in popular programs like Smart Guy, Felicity, Angel, and CSI: Miami. This was his career for years. His IMDb is filled with one episode parts as primarily unnamed characters, but his dedication to the career path is impressive to look back on.

Hardrict's first movie role came in the Drew Barrymore romantic comedy, Never Been Kissed, as Packer, a surprisingly large part after years of small TV roles. Things then settled back down for the actor, but it seemed like every year, he was steadily increasing his screen time and appearing in more and more projects, as if he would not be denied.

The Land of Nod: Skinamarink director Kyle Edward Ball sets up his next horror film
Image
Writer/director Kyle Edward Ball’s experimental micro-budget horror film Skinamarink proved to be quite divisive when it was given a theatrical release last year, followed by a release through the Shudder streaming service. Some viewers found the movie to be terrifying, while others found it to be mind-numbingly boring… but regardless of the response, it was made on a budget of $15,000 and earned over $2 million during its theatrical run, so it was a financial success. Now, Variety reports that Ball has set up his next horror film, teaming up with A24 to bring us something called The Land of Nod.

Ball will be writing and directing The Land of Nod, but plot details are being kept under wraps for now. All we know is that it’s a horror project that will be distributed by A24, and that it’s being produced by Ronald Bronstein, Eli Bush, and Josh Safdie...

Harry Melling's 10 Best Movies & TV Shows (& Career Post-Harry Potter)
Image
Harry Melling may be best known for his role in the Harry Potter movies as Harry's detestable cousin Dudley Dursley, but since the last of those films in 2010, he's proven himself to be a much more complex actor with a staggering amount of range in movies and on TV. As a beloved book series before the movies came out, nearly everyone had an idea of what each character would look like and how they would act. When Harry Melling appeared on-screen as Dudley Dursley to torment Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), it was immediately apparent he was the perfect fit.

For nearly 10 years, audiences watched Melling grow up, as they did most of the kids who appeared in the Harry Potter series. While he did a very admirable job in the role, it was unclear what Melling's career would look like after the magical series. He clearly had talent, but few people...

Julian Sands' 10 Best Movies Ranked
Image
The late Julian Sands was a prolific actor who appeared in notable and unique movies throughout his nearly three-decade career in Hollywood, and he left a lasting memory through his varied and complex performances. Sands was born in Yorkshire, England on January 4, 1958, and began his professional acting career with a one-episode role on the British anthology series, Play for Today. Soon after that unnamed part, he earned his first leading role in the Swiss horror film After Darkness as Laurence Hunningford.

So began a long career for Julian Sands, appearing in leading roles, supporting parts, and even tiny performances in everything from schlocky horror movies to charming, romantic comedies. He could play characters who were sweet and kind, and those who seemed like there was nothing behind their eyes. In 2023, at age 65, Sands went out hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains and never returned (via BBC). His remains were discovered...

SoHome Horror Pride 2024: ‘The Piper’ Review
Image
Stars: Julian Sands, Charlotte Hope, Aoibhe O’Flanagan, Pippa Winslow, Philipp Christopher | Written and Directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen

What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see this one – written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.

It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

The Last Breath Review | Bad CGI Sharks Lack Much of a Bite
Image
CGI sharks make mincemeat out of old college buddies in a predictable thriller that marks the last performance of venerated actor Julian Sands. The Last Breath never tries to be anything more than a low-budget indie film with the usual slew of underdeveloped, one-note characters. That said, Swedish director Joachim Hedn uses his extensive experience in the underwater genre to make the experience less superficial and more cinematic for the buck. The Last Breath deserves credit for being well-shot and edited but falls short with a generic script that lacks any surprises. You can easily guess who won't be making the boat ride back to shore.

The film opens in 1944 with a German U-boat torpedoing the USS Charlotte in the Caribbean. Several sailors survive the attack but meet a grisly fate treading water among the wreckage. In the present, Captain Levi (Sands) and his first mate, Noah (Jack Parr), are...

‘The Last Breath’ Review
Image
Stars: Julian Sands, Jack Parr, Arlo Carter, Erin Mullen, Kim Spearman, Alexander Arnold | Written by Andrew Prendergast, Nick Saltrese | Directed by Joachim Hedén

Notably, The Last Breath features the last performance by the late Julian Sands to reach the screen. Sadly, it’s a supporting role that doesn’t give him, or more likely his stunt double, a lot of screen time or much to do until the end of the film…

1944, somewhere off the US Virgin Islands, a German U Boat sinks the USS Charlotte. There are survivors, but where there are survivors, there are sharks. In the present, Levi (Julian Sands) has been searching for the wreck for decades, and, along with Noah he’s finally found it.

A group of Noah’s friends, Logan, Riley (Erin Mullen; Midsomer Murders), Sam who happens to be Noah’s ex, and her instantly hateable brother Brett arrive for a vacation.

The Last Breath trailer: shark thriller featuring Julian Sands reaches theatres and VOD in July
Image
Actor Julian Sands (Warlock) went missing while hiking on California’s Mount Baldy back in January of 2023, and sadly, his remains were found the following June. Just four months before Sands went missing, we reported on a film called The Last Breath, a shark thriller he was working on. He gave one of his final performances in this film – and soon, we’re going to have the chance to see that performance. Rlje Films will be giving The Last Breath a theatrical and VOD release on July 26th, and with that date right around the corner, a trailer has dropped online. It can be seen in the embed above.

Scripted by Nick Saltrese (Prayer Before Dawn), The Last Breath follows a group of college friends who embark on a once-in-a-lifetime dive. However, their adventure quickly turns into a nightmare as they become trapped in the darkness of a shipwreck and...

“The Last Breath”
“The Last Breath” is a new live-action ‘killer shark’ movie, directed by Joachim Hedén, starring Julian Sands, Kim Spearman, Jack Parr, Alex Arnold, Erin Mullen, Arlo Carter, Maxime Durand and Hayden Grech, releasing July 26, 2024 in theaters:

“…finding the long-lost wreck of the warship ‘USS Charlotte’ has been the lifelong pursuit of ‘Levi’ (Sands), an aging expat running a tourist dive business in the British Virgin Islands together with recent college dropout ‘Noah’ (Parr).

“When the USS Charlotte emerges for the first time in eighty years after a tropical storm, Noah’s friends visiting the island insist for them all to do a once-in-a-lifetime dive on the newly discovered wreck before it’s handed over to the authorities.

“The dream dive rapidly turns into a nightmare as they become trapped in the darkness of the Charlotte’s interior, thirty meters down and with a dwindling air supply. And then they discover that they are not alone…...

The Last Breath review – Julian Sands’s last film is solid shark-meets-shipwreck thriller
Julian Sands
A group of friends are terrorised by a shark while exploring a shipwreck in an unremarkable film that marks Sands final outing onscreen

In most respects this suspense-thriller with aquatic antagonists is pretty unremarkable, apart from the sad fact that it was British actor Julian Sands’s last film before he died while hiking. It’s a shame that he didn’t have a more interesting role, but few get to choose their swan song. Sands has a strictly functional supporting role here as Levi, a grizzled boat captain originally from Blighty, looking for the wreck of a ship that went down in the Caribbean during the second world war. Unable to dive any more because of an injury, Levi stays onboard supposedly knitting (even though the red hat he wears looks more like a misbegotten crochet project) while his younger crewmate Noah (Jack Parr) searches the ocean floor.

Then...

Hunter Schafer’s ‘Cuckoo,’ Charlie Plummer’s ‘National Anthem’ to Bookend Raindance as Festival Moves Up to Summer From Fall
Image
London’s Raindance Film Festival is making a significant calendar shift for its 32nd edition, moving from its traditional fall slot to a new summer schedule.

Raindance kicks off with the U.K. premiere of Tilman Singer’s “Cuckoo,” a horror feature starring Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens that previously played at Berlin and SXSW. Closing the festival is the European premiere of “National Anthem” by Luke Gilford, starring Charlie Plummer as a construction worker joining a community of queer rodeo performers. The film, which was at Toronto and SXSW, leads into the Pride in London weekend with a wild West End party.

This year, Germany is the festival’s guest of honor. The festival will showcase new German films, including “Cuckoo,” “Eternal You” and “What You See of Me.” A dedicated shorts program and industry panels, including a session with production designer Mona Cathleen Otterbach, will highlight Germany’s cinematic achievements.

Arachnophobia's Spider Wrangler Invented A Genius Technique For Controlling Spiders
Image
Cinematically speaking, spiders are having a miniature moment. On April 12, 2024, fans of creature features were treated to Kiah Roache-Turner's "Sting," a film about an alien spider that grows to an enormous size and terrorizes the denizens of a run-down apartment building. Then, on April 26, the United States was granted access to Sébastien Vanicek's "Infested" (French title: "Vermines"), a film about many spiders that grow to enormous sizes and terrorize the denizens of a run-down apartment building. These two films, of course, came hot on the heels of the February release of "Madame Web," the best Spider-Man-adjacent, non-Marvel-Cinematic-Universe-related mid-budget clairvoyance caper film ever made.

Children of the '90s may be getting flashbacks to the glories of Frank Marshall's 1990 spider horror/comedy "Arachnophobia," one of the more exciting mainstream horror films of its era. In "Arachnophobia," a venomous Venezuelan spider is accidentally shipped to the United States,...

The Only Daniel Day-Lewis Movie That Has A Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
If you took a poll of movie lovers and asked for a list of the best actors of the past 50 years, Daniel Day-Lewis would certainly be among them -- he may even occupy the number one slot. The versatile performer has been wowing audiences with his all-in, committed performance style for decades, and legends are legion about the lengths to which he'll go to immerse himself in his characters.

But only one of his films has a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, and it's somewhat surprising: It's not "Gangs of New York," "My Left Foot," or even "In the Name of the Father," but 1985's "A Room With a View," directed by James Ivory. Set in the early 1900s, the film follows a young Englishwoman named Lucy (Helena Bonham Carter) and her chaperone (Maggie Smith) on a trip to Italy, where she ignites a brief relationship with a man (Julian Sands...

Jeff Daniels Reflects On His '90s Cult Classic Horror Movie Ahead Of James Wan Remake
Image
Reflecting on Arachnophobia, Jeff Daniels found working with a giant spider memorable. Daniels enjoyed the experience, preferring spiders over snakes. The actor's last two weeks on set included bidding farewell to John Goodman and sharing the spotlight with the massive spider.

Jeff Daniels fondly reflects on Arachnophobia as James Wan prepares a remake of the cult classic '90s comedy-horror movie. Directed by Frank Marshall and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Daniels 1990 creature feature concerned a small California town beset by an invasive species of aggressive and deadly spiders. Co-starring Harley Jane Kozak, the late Julian Sands, and James Handy alongside John Goodman as a kooky, spider-hating exterminator, the film grossed a solid $53 million against a budget of $22 million, and is now set for a remake produced by Wan and helmed by Happy Death Day writer-director Christopher Landon.

Speaking exclusively to Screen Rant in an interview ahead of the premiere...

Arachnophobia's Jeff Daniels On Being Alone With a Rat-Eating Spider; Reveals Which Animal He Would Have Hated to Face Instead
Image
Jeff Daniels shared memorable spider moments from Arachnophobia & appreciated it wasn't about snakes. Arachnophobia stands out with a mix of horror & comedy; high expectations for the upcoming remake. Director Christopher Landon might capture the comedic essence of Arachnophobia in the remake.

Jeff Daniels has shared his memories of working with a real giant rat-eating spider on the 1990 comedy-horror movie Arachnophobia. As James Wan prepares to remake the cult favorite, Daniels recalled the creepy time he spent working with his eight-legged co-star in an interview with Screen Rant about his Netflix miniseries A Man in Full.

Arachnophobia, directed by Frank Marshall and produced by now-Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, was not a movie to watch if you break out in a sweat at the sight of that dark shape scurrying across the floor. Telling the tale of a Californian town overrun by a deadly species of spider, the film co-starred John Goodman...

Oscars In Memoriam: Lance Reddick, Cormac McCarthy, Treat Williams, Norman Lear, Frederic Forrest & Burt Young Relegated To Fine Print In Underwhelming Segment
Image
Andrea Bocelli performed a rendition of the song “Time to Say Goodbye” with his son Matteo Bocelli to accompany the Academy’s annual obituary section. Perhaps mindful of previous years, in which eagle-eyed viewers have jumped on omissions, this year’s “In Memoriam” — which began with footage of the recently deceased Russian opposition leader and subject of last year’s winning documentary Navalny — seemed comprehensive but at the same time not enough.

Beloved actors Lance Reddick, Treat Williams, Apocalypse Now’s Frederic Forrest, Rocky’s Burt Young all relegated to a fine print reference at the end, along with such writers as Norman Lear and No Country for Old Men’s Cormac McCarthy. 2024 Oscars In Memoriam Snubs: Where Were Lance Reddick, Treat Williams & More?
Image
Part of every awards show is the In Memoriam segment, which honors those who have died in the past year. And that also means that part of every awards show is taking note of who didn’t make the cut (as happens every time). The 2024 Oscars are no exception. Andrea Bocelli and his son Matteo performed “Time to Say Goodbye” for the 2024 Oscars In Memoriam segment. Among the names part of the segment—at the end, the broadcast directed viewers to a website for the “many other legends we lost”—were: Michael Gambon, Harry Belafonte, Alan Arkin, Julian Sands, Andre Braugher, Chita Rivera, Tom Wilkinson, Glynis Johns, Jane Birkin, Paul Reubens, Piper Laurie, Richard Roundtree, Ryan O’Neal, Matthew Perry, Richard Lewis, Lee Sun-Kyun, Carl Weathers, William Friedkin, Glenda Jackson, and Tina Turner. The In Memoriam segment, which you can watch above, did end with a long list of names on...

Breaking Baz: Cannes Chief Thierry Frémaux Proclaims 2024 Academy Awards ‘The Cannes Oscars’ As He Parties At the Charles Finch & Chanel Annual Soiree In Beverly Hills
Image
The 96th Academy Awards ceremony should be known as the Cannes Oscars, argues Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux.

He’s got a point.

Frémaux sipped a cocktail at the Charles Finch and Chanel Annual Pre-Oscar Dinner in the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and ticked off Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest as films that played and won the top prizes at last May’s festival.

Michael Barker, Sony Picture Classics co-chair, helped Frémaux out by adding in Martin Scorsese’s The Killers of the Flower Moon, which also premiered on the Croisette.

“Here we are in March, and the top winners at last year’s Cannes are still in the conversation, and are here at the Oscars,” says Frémaux, giving himself a pat on the back.

‘The Piper’ Review – ‘Rift’ Director’s Fairy Tale Horror Movie Plays a Deadly But Familiar Tune
Image
The German legend of The Pied Piper of Hamelin is the basis of two recent horror productions. The first of these “twin films” to receive a wide release is Erlingur Thoroddsen’s take, which shares the same title as Anthony Waller’s adaptation. And although both reimaginings feature demonic updates of that famous ratcatcher, only Thoroddsen’s story appears to underscore the musical component.

The Piper finds Charlotte Hope’s (The Nun) character Mel trapped in a familiar situation: her aspirations come at a great cost, and the consequences will be harmful. Here the young composer wants a future in her orchestra ensemble as well as the means to take care of her deaf daughter (Aoibhe O’Flanagan). Stealing a concerto from the estate of her recently departed mentor (Louise Gold) seems like the only option, but once the protagonist goes through with the plan, Mel’s conductor (Julian Sands) then...
