Homicide Life On The Street | Sky buys streaming rights for acclaimed police drama in the UK
Michelle Forbes, Yaphet Kotto, Max Perlich, Kyle Secor, Richard Belzer, Andre Braugher, Reed Diamond, Clark Johnson, and Melissa Leo in Homicide: Life on the Street (1993)
The highly acclaimed 1990s American police drama Homicide: Life On The Street will finally be available to stream in the UK thanks to Sky.

While late and much missed Andre Braugher may have won legions of fans in recent years for his pitch-perfect comic performance as Sgt Raymond Holt in sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, it is his towering performance as Detective Frank Pendleton in Homicide: Life On The Street that he made his name.

The show was created by Paul Attanasio, who went on to become Oscar nominated for writing the screenplays for Robert Redford’s Quiz Show and Mike Newell’s Donnie Brasco. Attanasio based the show on the book Homicide: A Year On The Killing Streets by journalist David Simon, who himself went on to have huge success in television after creating The Wire.

According to Deadline, fans in the UK will now be able to watch the show,...

'Homicide Life on the Street' Ending Explained - Case Closed
Image
When Homicide: Life on the Street first aired more than 30 years ago, people didn't know what to make of it. With its jarring camera style and thought-provoking dialogue-heavy narrative, the show went against the grain of typical police dramas. Developed by Paul Attanasio and based on David Simon's revealing 1991 book, Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, the series brought to life Simon's gritty experiences as a reporter embedded with a Baltimore homicide squad. With the help of Baltimore native Barry Levinson and starring Kyle Secor and the late duo of Yaphet Kotto and Andre Braugher in career-defining roles, the show launched in January 1993. It was broadcast on NBC for seven seasons, culminating in 122 episodes and an extended feature, Homicide: The Movie.

Fremantle Taking Remastered ‘Homicide: Life On The Street’ Around The World As It Closes Deals In Canada & Israel
Image
Exclusive: After Homicide: Life on the Street landed on Peacock several weeks back, Fremantle has struck its first major deals for the remastered version of NBC’s iconic police series, while senior international exec Bob McCourt has teased a potential remake.

Israel’s Yes and Canada’s Bell Media have picked up Homicide, with more deals close, we understand. Starring Andre Braugher, Yaphet Kotto and Melissa Leo, the show based on David Simon’s book ran for more than 100 episodes and seven seasons in the 1990s and is considered by many to be a precursor to Simon’s The Wire. The HD remastered version launched on Peacock over the summer, and Fremantle, which holds non-u.S. rights, is prioritizing at MIPCOM Cannes, according to Fremantle Commercial and International COO McCourt, who said Homicide “revolutionized the crime genre.”

10 Ways Homicide: Life on the Street Has Gotten Better With Age
Image
After years of hoping and waiting, Homicide: Life on the Street is finally available to stream via Peacock. Premiering back in 1993, this Baltimore-based procedural not only set the tone for decades to come but raised the bar for shows in general. While writer David Simon's later project, The Wire, often gets all the glory, the years have proven Homicide to be a trailblazer and it just gets better with age.

It's very easy to take detective series for granted today. From campy to serious, there's no shortage of police procedurals. But even the almighty Dick Wolf universe, with all those Law & Order sagas, owe a debt to -- and are canonically linked to -- Homicide: Life on the Street. Even decades after its final episode, it more than holds up.

In honor of ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’ streaming on Peacock: Top 5 episodes
Image
Sometimes it’s hard to revisit a favorite TV series you haven’t seen in decades. Will the show hold up or be hopelessly dated? Happily, NBC’s groundbreaking 1993-98 police series “Homicide: Life on the Street” is just as brilliant as it was three decades Peacock recently dropped all seven seasons as well as 2000’s “Homicide: The Movie.”.

As NPR noted: “It was a cop show without gun battles or car chases, with a bracing shot of street-level realism; film mostly in Baltimore. ‘Homicide’ presented stuff you just didn’t see on network television back then: shaky, kinetic camera work, working stiff police detectives cracking jokes at gruesome murder scenes…serialized stories that arced over several episodes, heart-rending killings that never get solved.”

The series, which was set in the fictional Baltimore Police Department Unit, was based on David Simon’s (“The Wire”) 1991 book “Homicide: A Year in the Life of the Killing Streets.

‘Homicide’: Kyle Secor on Working With Andre Braugher, ‘L&o’ Crossovers, and More
Image
Even before Peacock announced that Homicide: Life on the Street would make its streaming debut on August 19, Kyle Secor had been pondering the seven seasons he spent on the gritty, critically acclaimed NBC drama. The deaths of costars Richard Belzer and Andre Braugher in 2023 rekindled his memories of playing Baltimore police detective Tim Bayliss, who began as a naive rookie and grew into a hardened veteran over the course of 122 episodes, from 1993 to 1999, and a final TV movie in 2000. “It was an amazing experience for almost the entire seven years,” Secor tells TV Insider. “What stands out mostly is the freedom we were given as actors to lead the action rather than have to correspond to a camera setting, the way that you collaborated with the writers creating the character, and just working with all the different personalities and the amazing talents that were there on a daily basis, from...

Homicide: Life on the Street has found a streaming home and will debut next month
Image
Homicide: Life on the Street has been absent from streaming, but the critically acclaimed crime drama has finally found a new home and will launch next month. It has been announced that all seven seasons of Homicide: Life on the Street will be available on Peacock in the US starting on August 19th. All 122 episodes have been remastered for HD and 4K viewing, and Homicide: The Movie is also included.

The series was based on David Simon’s book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets and was created by Paul Attanasio. It followed the Baltimore Police Department’s Homicide Unit. Bleak and unglamorous, the show was praised for its more realistic treatment of detectives and their work; threads weren’t always tied up at the end, and criminals sometimes got away. It also boasted one hell of a cast, including Andre Braugher, Ned Beatty, Yaphett Kotto, Melissa Leo, Giancarlo Esposito,...

Thirty years after “Homicide: Life on the Street” hit the airwaves, a UK filmmaker and podcaster and a Baltimore camera assistant decided it was time to revisit the groundbreaking drama that garnered numerous awards during its seven seasons on NBC. Their new monthly behind-the-scenes podcast, Homicide: Life on the Set, premieres in March, focusing on creators and crew, including engaging conversations with camera, lighting and sound techs, creators, writers, actors, directors and more, including Jean de Segonzac, Tom Fontana and Kyle Secor.

“In early 2023, I started researching and developing a concept for a UK-based police film,” filmmaker Chris Carr said. “Always a huge fan of ‘Homicide,’ especially its gritty, cinéma-vérité shooting style, I started looking for a camera crew member to interview about how the show was shot. In the first episode of the Nineties NBC cop drama Homicide: Life on the Street, Baltimore police detective Frank Pembleton, played by a then-obscure actor named Andre Braugher, reluctantly takes on a young partner, Tim Bayliss (Kyle Secor). Bayliss, new to homicide investigation, is eager to watch Pembleton interrogate a murder suspect, which prompts Frank to explain, “What you will be privileged to witness will not be an interrogation, but an act of salesmanship — as silver-tongued and thieving as ever moved used cars, Florida swampland, or Bibles. ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Cast, David Simon and More Remember Andre Braugher: “A True Legend”
Image
Hollywood notables were among those taking to social media to remember Andre Braugher, who died Monday at 61.

Braugher was most known for his roles as Det. Frank Pembleton on NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street from 1993-98, as well as Capt. Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine from 2013-21. He died following a brief illness, his longtime rep Jennifer Allen told The Hollywood Reporter.

Several former co-stars and industry creatives who Braugher worked with throughout his career, including Terry Crews, David Simon, Chelsea Peretti, Joel McKinnon Miller, Dirk Blocker, Reed Diamond, Mike Royce and Josh Lucas, wrote heartfelt tributes to remember the beloved actor.

“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon,” Crews, who also starred in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, wrote on Instagram Tuesday. “I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts. You left us too soon.

Richard Belzer’s Best Quotes as ‘Homicide’ Detective John Munch
Image
Comedian and actor Richard Belzer, who sadly died on Sunday at age 78, played detective John Munch on several series, including “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” And on every single one of them, he had something wise and witty to say.

The character of John Munch was created on the underrated ’90s police drama “Homicide: Life on the Street.” Munch was known for his one-liners, metaphysical riffs and sprawling conspiracy theories while solving murders in Baltimore alongside detectives played by Andre Braugher, Daniel Baldwin and Ned Beatty. As he mused in one episode: “If a murder is committed in Baltimore and no homicide detective takes the call, did that homicide actually occur?”

He got a bit blue when the character moved over to “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” in 1999, where the topics were rape, assault and, sometimes, sexual dysfunction, but he was still the same Munch.
