Comedy ‘Bad Shabbos’ Tops $1 Million In Latest Slow Burn Indie Rollout – Specialty Box Office
Image
Menemsha Films’ comedy Bad Shabbos passed $1 million at the U.S. box office this weekend with a $53k gross on 30 screens, the latest in a string of small often quirky indie releases that opened limited and continued a slow rollout over months, or longer.

They include Mike Cheslik’s dialogue-free supernatural winter epic Hundreds Of Beavers, which opened Stateside in January of 2024, raked up $724k domestic and $1.2 million worldwide, and was still playing some college towns until fairly recently to enthusiastic fans with beaver-tail hats.

Documentary Secret Mall Apartment from Wheelhouse Creative took in $846k starting with a launch in Providence, Rhode Island in March at Providence Place Mall, where the renegade filmmakers created a secret apartment in 2003 and kept it going for four years.

Utopia’s Pavements, a hybrid documentary by Alex Ross Perry about American indie band Pavement, debuted in theaters in early May and is at $345k and continuing its road show.

‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Season 2 Recap: What To Remember Ahead Of Season 3
Image
The wait for one last summer at Cousins Beach is almost over with The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 arriving next week on July 16.

With a larger gap in production than expected due to the writers and actors strikes at the end of 2023, certain details from Season 2 might be fuzzier going into the new episodes. We think it might be important to brush up on them ahead of what creator, author and showrunner Jenny Han calls a “supersized” third season, consisting of 11 episodes.

Season 1 actually began with Belly dreaming that she was back in Cousins with both brothers, and that she was dating Conrad, but the ringing of the school bell woke her from her reverie and plunged her back into high school, away from the place she’d rather always be.

Jenny Han Teases That Scenes From The Book In ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Season 3 “Might Not Always Happen” In The Way Fans Are Expecting
Image
Avid fans of Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty and Jenny Han’s books upon which the show is based have less than 10 days until Season 3’s premiere on the streamer, and the author and showrunner hinted that certain highly anticipated scenes from the books may play out a little differently than the way she wrote them.

In Han’s words in an interview with People, even the most beloved scenes in her third book We’ll Always Have Summer that fans are most looking forward to “might not always happen in the way that [they]’re expecting.”

Seasons 1 and 2 of the television series underwent their own changes, big ones being the addition of the whole debutante ball in Season 1 as a backdrop and also the addition of Kyra Sedgwick’s Aunt Julia and Elsie Fisher’s Skye in Season 2’s main plot of the Cousins Beach House almost getting sold.

Thirsty Review: A Powerful Lead Performance in a Flawed Film
Image
In the world of political dramas, we often get polished tales of inevitable ascents or catastrophic falls from grace, usually centered on characters who seem destined for the arena. Thirsty offers something different, something grittier and closer to the ground, reminding me of the scrappy, character-driven independent films of the 1990s.

The film introduces us to Audrey Allen, a passionate public defender in Oakland. After one conflict too many with a system she feels is failing people, she makes the stunning decision to resign from her job and launch an improbable campaign for mayor. It’s a move born of pure frustration and a deep-seated, almost naive, belief that she can do better for her community.

She is immediately positioned as a massive underdog against the city’s popular, powerful, and well-funded incumbent, Maya King. The film wastes no time establishing the immense personal stakes of this decision, giving us immediate,...

3 must watch horror hits on Netflix for fans of Barbarian
Image
Netflix recently added one of the best horror films of the decade in Barbarian. If you survived that onslaught to the senses, we've got three more horrifying tales for you.

A quick note: like Barbarian, all three of these films are led by strong women, both the characters and actresses. So if you're the incel-type with mommy issues, you might want to stay safe with your Jason and Freddy fantasies. The adults will be watching these.

As in director Zach Cregger's startling debut film, all three of these films feature women who are thrown into the role of the victim, but (no spoilers) attempt to fight their way through the grisly events they face. A side note: for certain bloggers. I see this all too often. "Grizzly" refers to a type of bear. "Grisly" is derived from the Old English "grislic", meaning horrible. And horrible fates await in all three of these films.

‘Miss Congeniality’ Actress Heather Burns ‘Would Jump’ at Making a Third Film and Working With ‘Lifelong Friends’ Like Sandra Bullock: ‘That Was One of the Best Experiences of My Life’
Image
Heather Burns is interested in competing for the “Miss Congeniality” crown again for a third time.

In an interview with People during the premiere of her latest film, “The Best You Can” at the 2025 Tribeca Festival, Burns spoke about her interest in a third “Miss Congeniality’ film. “I would love it. That was one of the best experiences of my life,” said Burns, who played Cheryl Frasier in the film, known as Miss Rhode Island in the pageant. She added, “It was so much fun making both of those films. I’m actually here with one of the other actresses. Melissa De Sousa, she played Miss New York, she’s my date tonight, which is wonderful.”

Even though it’s been 25 years since the first “Miss Congeniality” film hit theaters, certain cast members stayed in touch after filming. “I made lifelong friends with Sandra Bullock,” said Burns. “It’s just a dream.

The Best You Can Review: Powered by a Potent Chemistry Engine
Image
Every so often, a story appears that feels like a quiet, narrative-driven indie title. It’s not about grand spectacle, but about the small, intricate mechanics of human connection. The Best You Can is one such story. We first meet Cynthia, a urologist whose life has become a dedicated mission to care for her husband, Warren.

He is a brilliant man, a former legal mind from the Watergate era, now drifting into the fog of dementia. Her love for him is palpable, but so is the quiet hum of her own life being put on hold. Elsewhere in the city, there is Stan, a security guard whose own life map feels incomplete. He’s an underachiever wrestling with a disconnected relationship with his musician daughter, Sammi.

These two characters are on entirely separate paths until a late-night alarm at Cynthia’s house acts as a catalyst, forcing their stories to intersect.

‘The Best You Can’ Review: Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon Bring Warmth and Honesty to a Story About Aging and New Beginnings
Image
One of the great misfortunes of human life is the fact that much of it is spent in a constant state of worry. Are we doing the right things to reach our potential? Is it too late to start something new, or redo it all? These relatable queries are at the heart of writer-director Michael J. Weithorn’s modestly scaled dramedy “The Best You Can,” an optimistic film that feels truthful about aging, even if it doesn’t say anything we haven’t heard before.

Then again, you can’t really blame a movie for not formulating a brand-new answer to the existential dread around that old question, “How the hell did old age arrive so soon?” (It goes without saying that the definition of “old” depends on whom you ask.) Instead, it feels fairer to acknowledge and praise the lived-in textures that Weithorn fashions, a sense of authenticity that...

‘The Best You Can’ Review: Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick Star in a Congenial but Unremarkable Dramedy About an Unlikely Friendship
Image
Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick bring their vivid screen presence and expert timing to The Best You Can, elevating this low-key, Tribeca-premiering dramedy. With strong performances and a fresh premise about an unexpected friendship in middle age, but far too many creaky comic tropes, the uneven film is always watchable but never pops off the screen in a gripping way.

It’s the second feature written and directed by Michael J. Weithorn, a co-creator of The King of Queens and a veteran writer on other sitcoms. It’s simply descriptive and not a disparagement to say that with its often strained plot and quick-hit sitcom timing, the film is most likely to appeal to an undemanding audience and an older demographic.

Sedgwick plays Cynthia, whose brilliant husband, Warren (Judd Hirsch, reliably on point), once on the staff of the Watergate committee, is now 83 and sliding into dementia. At the start...

‘The Best You Can’ Review: Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon Are the Draw in This Charming, Low-Key Dramedy
Image
Rather remarkably, “The Best You Can” represents the first time real-life spouses Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon have been onscreen together in 20 years. And if their reunion is just as easygoing and unpretentious as their beloved at-home TikToks, well, is that really anything to complain about?

Sedgwick’s Cynthia seems, at first, to be living a pretty ideal life. She and her brilliant husband, Warren (Judd Hirsch), have a gorgeous home in Brooklyn, and she works as a successful urologist while he rests on the laurels of a celebrated career as a Watergate prosecutor. But there are cracks, which get wider every time Warren forgets where he is, or what he’s working on. And these fissures soon make space for Stan (Bacon), a security guard who patrols Cynthia’s neighborhood.

After an apparent break-in brings them together one night, Cynthia and Stan find themselves texting jokes, then daily commentary,...

‘The Best You Can’ Review: Kevin Bacon & Kyra Sedgwick Shine As Boomers Looking For Renewal In First Onscreen Pairing In 20 Years – Tribeca Festival
Image
Making its world premiere in the Spotlight Narrative section of the Tribeca Festival, The Best You Can represents the first major onscreen teaming of real-life husband and wife Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick since 2004’s The Woodsman, and they remain the best reason to see this small but engaging character dramedy about boomers fighting life passing them by. It will also largely appeal to that similar demographic. Nothing wrong with that.

It is hard to believe the ever-young dancing presence of Footloose is now 66 and playing a guy with prostate problems but, hey, everyone gets older and the sweet premise of this film written and directed by Michael J. Weithorn is that maybe it is never too late to find something new to re-energize your life, even if it seems that ship has already sailed.

Sedgwick plays Cynthia Rand, the 25-years-younger wife of Walter (Judd Hirsch) who sadly is experiencing the onset of dementia,...

Thirsty Review — A Dogged, Provocative, and Ambitious Take on Upstart Political Ambition
Image
The new film Thirsty is a dogged, provocative, and ambitious take on upstart political ambition and the double standards regarding women in politics. The movie is never afraid to show contradictions, with racial, gender, and political divides that are subtle and sneak up on you.

While the film would have benefited greatly by leaning into the natural dark comedic sensibilities that were trying to come to the surface, what you have instead is an idealistic view of the political process and the collision of sobering reality that comes with such ambitions.

Thirsty is a film that rests on the shoulders of one of the year’s best performances. Jamie Neumann is so good here that it will likely go unrecognized, precisely because she is honest and unsparing. Her performance is utterly devoid of sentimentality, focused solely on presenting something politicians rarely do: the truth.

Tribeca Festival: Miley Cyrus’ ‘Something Beautiful,’ Barbara Walters Doc and 11 Other Films We’re Excited to See

The Tribeca Film Festival is all about the music.

Three years ago, Taylor Swift brought her directorial debut short “All Too Well” and revealed her desire to continue working in film. This time, it’s Miley Cyrus who moves behind the camera with “Something Beautiful,” which is being billed as a “one-of-a-kind pop opera.”

“We’re all about showcasing new ways for people to express themselves and differentiate themselves and explore whatever new forms of storytelling are speaking to them,” says Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of Tribeca.

This year’s festival isn’t just about the pop culture icons — though it will premiere new documentaries on Metallica, De La Soul and Billy Joel. Tribeca’s nonfiction lineup also includes intimate looks at news legends, sushi masters and even a giant manta ray named “Willy Wow.”

Kevin Bacon Breaks Silence After 'The Bondsman' Canceled At Prime Video
Image
After failing to make an impact on Prime Video, Amazon gave the ax to Kevin Bacon's The Bondsman last week after just one season. Now, the star is speaking out to explain what happened, and to thank the fans that came along for the ride. Premiering back on April 3, the series starred Bacon as Hub Halloran, a backwoods bounty hunter who comes back from the dead only to find that his old job now has a demonic new twist.

Taking to his Instagram account, a disappointed Bacon posted a video of himself (seen below) so that fans of The Bondsman could hear straight from the horse's mouth about what happened with his action horror series. Unfortunately, he didn't have the answers we were all looking for as to why it was canceled, but did say that he enjoyed his time making the short-lived series:

“Hey folks. Really bummed out...

Ben Affleck Thinks Kevin Costner Was “Being Kind” Saying He Remembers Him and Matt Damon as ‘Field of Dreams’ Extras: “We Were Not Memorable”
Image
Ben Affleck remembers meeting Kevin Costner alongside Matt Damon when they were working as extras all too well.

Affleck and Damon got their start in the entertainment industry as film extras. One of their first big jobs as a duo was acting in the background of the sports drama Field of Dreams, which starred Costner. During a Wednesday appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Affleck responded to the Yellowstone actor stating he recalled him and Damon while they were working on the 1989 film.

“Kevin is being kind saying he remembers us because we were not memorable,” he joked. “It’s sweet of him to say that, but I’m pretty sure he remembers the actors with lines.”

In May last year, the Oscar winner recalled Affleck and Damon’s “big enthusiasm” working on Field of Dreams. “They were on fire. I do remember them, absolutely,” he told Kimmel at the time.

Kevin Bacon Reveals He First Met Wife Kyra Sedgwick When She Was 12 And a Fan of His Work
Image
Kevin Bacon is sharing the story about how he first met wife Kyra Sedgwick nearly 50 years ago, but he has no recollection of that moment.

When Kyra was just 12, she attended a performance of a play that Kevin was starring in and they briefly met after the show. While she remembers the meeting, he doesn’t.

Later on, they worked together in the 1988 television movie Lemon Sky!

Kevin opened up about how it wasn’t “love at first sight” for them while appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show this week.

Keep reading to find out more…

“I was doing a lot of, off Broadway… I was 19, so she was, 12 I think, and, her mom had seen me in some plays off Broadway and she knew that little, you know, 12 year old Kyra wanted to be an actor and she said, you know, I, there’s this actor that I think you should go see,...

Kevin Bacon Wants to Scare the S— Out of You: ‘The Bondsman’ Badass on Loving Horror and Season 2 Plans
Image
Spoiler Alert: This interview contains mild spoilers about this season of “The Bondsman,” now available to stream on Prime Video.

The new series “The Bondsman” stars Kevin Bacon as Hub Halloran, a recently-murdered bondsman who is granted fresh life by Satan, as long as he uses his tracking skills to hunt down and kill demons who have escaped from the underworld. That’s a hell of a premise, but this show has much more on its mind than just monsters-of-the-week, diving deep into Hub’s relationship with his ex-wife and son and his love-hate relationship with the country music industry.

The surprises start at the top. At first, Bacon’s macho lead role seems like a run-of-the-mill badass: All one-liners, muscles and cool-guy poses. But that was only half of the appeal for the veteran actor.

“You see him right away kicking ass, right? But he’s also a man-child,...

This Forgotten Must-See Maika Monroe Horror-Comedy is Now Free to Stream
Image
Maika Monroe has successfully ingratiated herself to horror fans in the years since rising to prominence with the indie hit It Follows. Part of her appeal stems from her impressive acting chops. She’s a great thespian with plenty of range. There’s also her willingness to continue to appear in genre fare after making a name for herself. That’s refreshing, seeing as many actors use the horror genre as a stepping stone and then pivot to more mainstream fare the first chance they get. Oh, and there’s the fact that Ms. Monroe chooses her roles really smartly. She has far more hits than misses on her CV. With a track record like that, it’s no wonder we’ve fallen under her spell.

Speaking of Monroe’s winning track record, Villains, one of her lesser-known (yet still critically acclaimed) efforts, is now available to stream for free.
