The San Quentin Film Festival — which, last year, became the first-ever film festival held inside of a prison — has set the industry jury for its second annual event, including Vanessa Williams, Esai Morales, Jesse Williams, Celine Song and more.

These jurors will judge narrative and documentary short films from currently and formerly incarcerated filmmakers as well the pitch competitions for best screenplay and best documentary from currently incarcerated writers.

This year’s jury also features two formerly incarcerated people: actor and writer Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin, who starred in 2024’s “Sing Sing,” as well as actor, author and poet Richard Cabral, best known for “Mayans M.C.” and “American Crime.”

Other notable jurors include Kyra Sedgwick and Claudia Weill. Last year’s industry jury included Jeffrey Wright, Billy Crudup, Mary-Louise Parker and more.

The wait for one last summer at Cousins Beach is almost over with The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 arriving next week on July 16.

With a larger gap in production than expected due to the writers and actors strikes at the end of 2023, certain details from Season 2 might be fuzzier going into the new episodes. We think it might be important to brush up on them ahead of what creator, author and showrunner Jenny Han calls a “supersized” third season, consisting of 11 episodes.

We Were Liars is a teen mystery thriller series created by Carina Adly MacKenzie and Julie Plec. Based on E. Lockhart’s 2014 novel, the Prime Video series follows Cady Sinclair, a teen girl from an extremely affluent family who suffers from amnesia after a tragic accident, but she begins to suspect that someone was behind her getting hurt.

Avid fans of Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty and Jenny Han’s books upon which the show is based have less than 10 days until Season 3’s premiere on the streamer, and the author and showrunner hinted that certain highly anticipated scenes from the books may play out a little differently than the way she wrote them.

In Han’s words in an interview with People, even the most beloved scenes in her third book We’ll Always Have Summer that fans are most looking forward to “might not always happen in the way that [they]’re expecting.”

Seasons 1 and 2 of the television series underwent their own changes, big ones being the addition of the whole debutante ball in Season 1 as a backdrop and also the addition of Kyra Sedgwick’s Aunt Julia and Elsie Fisher’s Skye in Season 2’s main plot of the Cousins Beach House almost getting sold.

Every so often, a story appears that feels like a quiet, narrative-driven indie title. It’s not about grand spectacle, but about the small, intricate mechanics of human connection. The Best You Can is one such story. We first meet Cynthia, a urologist whose life has become a dedicated mission to care for her husband, Warren.

He is a brilliant man, a former legal mind from the Watergate era, now drifting into the fog of dementia. Her love for him is palpable, but so is the quiet hum of her own life being put on hold. Elsewhere in the city, there is Stan, a security guard whose own life map feels incomplete. He’s an underachiever wrestling with a disconnected relationship with his musician daughter, Sammi.

These two characters are on entirely separate paths until a late-night alarm at Cynthia’s house acts as a catalyst, forcing their stories to intersect.

One of the great misfortunes of human life is the fact that much of it is spent in a constant state of worry. Are we doing the right things to reach our potential? Is it too late to start something new, or redo it all? These relatable queries are at the heart of writer-director Michael J. Weithorn’s modestly scaled dramedy “The Best You Can,” an optimistic film that feels truthful about aging, even if it doesn’t say anything we haven’t heard before.

Then again, you can’t really blame a movie for not formulating a brand-new answer to the existential dread around that old question, “How the hell did old age arrive so soon?” (It goes without saying that the definition of “old” depends on whom you ask.) Making its world premiere in the Spotlight Narrative section of the Tribeca Festival, The Best You Can represents the first major onscreen teaming of real-life husband and wife Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick since 2004’s The Woodsman, and they remain the best reason to see this small but engaging character dramedy about boomers fighting life passing them by. It will also largely appeal to that similar demographic. Nothing wrong with that.

It is hard to believe the ever-young dancing presence of Footloose is now 66 and playing a guy with prostate problems but, hey, everyone gets older and the sweet premise of this film written and directed by Michael J. Weithorn is that maybe it is never too late to find something new to re-energize your life, even if it seems that ship has already sailed.

The new film Thirsty is a dogged, provocative, and ambitious take on upstart political ambition and the double standards regarding women in politics. The movie is never afraid to show contradictions, with racial, gender, and political divides that are subtle and sneak up on you.

While the film would have benefited greatly by leaning into the natural dark comedic sensibilities that were trying to come to the surface, what you have instead is an idealistic view of the political process and the collision of sobering reality that comes with such ambitions.

Thirsty is a film that rests on the shoulders of one of the year’s best performances. Jamie Neumann is so good here that it will likely go unrecognized, precisely because she is honest and unsparing. Her performance is utterly devoid of sentimentality, focused solely on presenting something politicians rarely do: the truth.

The 24th annual Tribeca Film Festival 2025 kicked off Wednesday, June 4, with the world premiere of Billy Joel: And So It Goes. Screening at the Beacon Theatre, the HBO original two-part documentary offers an expansive look into the legendary artist’s life, tracing the love, loss, and personal struggles that profoundly influenced his songwriting.

Sad news for fans of Kevin Bacon's Amazon Prime Video series The Bondsman. On Friday, Deadline reported that the streaming service had chosen not to renew the series for another season.

Bacon took to his Instagram to commiserate with show fans, admitting that he feels "really bummed out" about the cancellation. The star said he loved doing the show and playing Hub, along with working with the talented cast and crew.

Even the actor couldn't provide a reason behind the cancellation, saying, "I wish I had an explanation for you, but I honestly don't."

He then goes on to thank his fans and everyone who reached out to him about it. You can watch the entire video below.

After failing to make an impact on Prime Video, Amazon gave the ax to Kevin Bacon's The Bondsman last week after just one season. Now, the star is speaking out to explain what happened, and to thank the fans that came along for the ride. Premiering back on April 3, the series starred Bacon as Hub Halloran, a backwoods bounty hunter who comes back from the dead only to find that his old job now has a demonic new twist.

Taking to his Instagram account, a disappointed Bacon posted a video of himself (seen below) so that fans of The Bondsman could hear straight from the horse's mouth about what happened with his action horror series. Unfortunately, he didn't have the answers we were all looking for as to why it was canceled, but did say that he enjoyed his time making the short-lived series:

Ben Affleck remembers meeting Kevin Costner alongside Matt Damon when they were working as extras all too well.

Affleck and Damon got their start in the entertainment industry as film extras. One of their first big jobs as a duo was acting in the background of the sports drama Field of Dreams, which starred Costner. During a Wednesday appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Affleck responded to the Yellowstone actor stating he recalled him and Damon while they were working on the 1989 film.

“Kevin is being kind saying he remembers us because we were not memorable,” he joked. “It’s sweet of him to say that, but I’m pretty sure he remembers the actors with lines.”

In May last year, the Oscar winner recalled Affleck and Damon’s “big enthusiasm” working on Field of Dreams. “They were on fire. I do remember them, absolutely,” he told Kimmel at the time.

Set mostly in the fictional Cousins Beach, the drama series features the coming-of-age of Isabelle “Belly” Conklin (Lola Tung), who grew up going to Cousins every summer with her mom Laurel (Jackie Chung) and brother Steven (Sean Kaufman) with Laurel’s best friend Susannah (Rachel Blanchard) and her sons Conrad (Chris Briney) and Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno). Discovery’s cable networks business, late last week it was announced that “American Dad!” would be ending its ten season run on the once well regarded “superstation” and is poised for a return to its former home on Fox as part of the broadcast network’s Animation Domination programming block.

According to Deadline, a deal to have the animated comedy from 20th Television Animation back on Fox is still being finalized and would likely include an order for multiple seasons, starting with Season 20. The show concluded its 19th season finale on Monday, March 24.

Maika Monroe has successfully ingratiated herself to horror fans in the years since rising to prominence with the indie hit It Follows. Part of her appeal stems from her impressive acting chops. She’s a great thespian with plenty of range. There’s also her willingness to continue to appear in genre fare after making a name for herself. That’s refreshing, seeing as many actors use the horror genre as a stepping stone and then pivot to more mainstream fare the first chance they get.
