The latest in our series of writers recommending comfort watches is a tribute to 1996’s charming restaurant-set comedy drama
“Life is meals,” observed the novelist James Salter. Big Night, Stanley Tucci’s spirited and sumptuous indie from 1996, is a film about one big meal that asks a few big questions about life, including: What is the cost of the American dream? What does food allow us to say to each other that words can’t? And what right does Marc Anthony, of all people, have to deliver one of the most charming non-speaking performances in any movie since the silent era?
Big Night follows two Italian immigrants who run a failing restaurant in 1950s New Jersey. Ambitious, high-strung Secondo is the manager, while his brother Primo (Tony Shalhoub) is the madman in the kitchen, a purist who derides the local clientele as philistines and has begun to doubt the wisdom...

Mistry, a Jio HotStar series in the news for all the wrong reasons, is a pale shadow of the original American series Monk about a detective Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) with obsessive–compulsive disorder. Given an Indian context, the series, more than its protagonist , suffers from some sort of a disorder.
The trick of making the quirky detective work is to not allow him to take himself serious, This, Tony Shalhoub achieved with minimum strenuousness in the original. Monk in Mistry transforms into Armaan Mistry. As played by Ram Kapoor, he seems to be on a vague romp with no particular agenda except to be weird and wise, and more capable of solving each case than the cop on duty Sehmat Siddiqui (Mona Singh).
Sehmat seems constantly stressed. Is it the pointlessness of the whole exercise which bothers her? The cases that Armaan and Sehmat, in that order, solve, are...

Everybody loves a cozy mystery. There's nothing quite like curling up with a warm blanket and a mystery show that wraps things up each episode, following a quirky mystery-solver of one kind or another. Whether we're following someone like murder mystery author Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) on "Murder, She Wrote" or traveling truth-teller Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) on "Poker Face," there's just something about cozy mysteries that soothes the soul. Now, there's another great cozy mystery series that's joined the crew: "Elsbeth," starring Carrie Preston as the titular crime-solver. The CBS show is actually a spin-off of "The Good Wife" and "The Good Fight," on which Preston initially played unconventional Chicago attorney Elsbeth Tascioni. On her own series, however, the character is working with the New York Police Department to solve crimes instead of prosecute them.

Disney+ Hotstar has set 27 June for the premiere of “Mistry,” the Indian re-imagining of NBCUniversal’s Emmy-winning drama Monk.
The eight-episode series is produced by Banijay Asia in collaboration with Universal International Studios, giving the detective franchise its first South-Asian makeover.
Veteran actor Ram Kapoor steps into Tony Shalhoub’s shoes as Armaan Mistry, an obsessive-compulsive sleuth who now consults for the Mumbai Police.
“Armaan Mistry is a character unlike any I’ve played before… I have deep-dived into his quirks, brilliance and vulnerabilities,” Kapoor told Deadline’s Indian partners.
The cast includes Mona Singh as Acp Sehmat Siddiqui, with Shikha Talsania and Kshitish Date; filmmaker Rishab Seth directs the adaptation.
Banijay Asia chief Deepak Dhar calls the show “a seamless blend of crime, humour and heart,” adding that localising an iconic neuro-divergent hero “hits all the right chords” with Indian audiences.

Normally, Conan O’Brien and the “Inside the NBA” stars get the biggest laughs at a Warner Bros. Discovery upfront. O’Brien wasn’t there, instead appearing via a quick, albeit hysterical, video mocking the wonkiness of ad speak. And despite TNT’s loss of the NBA , legend-turned-analyst Shaquille O’Neal still dropped by, but as part of a gag for the DC team promoting their upcoming “Superman” film.
Instead, the audience of ad buyers gathered at Madison Square Garden for Tuesday’s Wbd upfront saved their biggest guffaws for the admittedly hysterical announcement that the company would rebrand its streaming service “HBO Max” — two years after dumping the “HBO” part of the name to just go “Max.”

Taking a seat at The Theater at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday morning, I scanned the crowd, soaking wet from the rain, and wondered how many gathered at the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront had any idea that they were about to get punked.
Two years after shoving the rebrand of streamer Max (née HBO Max) down advertiser throats, the “HBO” is being surgically reattached to the platform on which the company’s future hinges. Curiously, this development wasn’t front-loaded in the presentation. It came 30 minutes in, after multiple mentions of “Max,” when Casey Bloys arrived.
“With the course we are on and the strong momentum we’re enjoying,” said Bloys, “we believe HBO Max far better represents our current consumer proposition.”
The proposition was received in the room with laughter and a smattering of “oh wows,” though no one appeared to interpret the news as a joke. If anybody was grieving Max,...

Every fictional detective written in the last 100 years has a little bit of Sherlock Holmes in them. But procedural dramedy series "Monk" is patterned very explicitly after "Sherlock Holmes," down to its ensemble cast. The lynchpin of that cast is Adrian Monk, a San Francisco detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder (Ocd) and extreme germaphobia.
Though Monk shares Holmes' power of observation, it's not a perfect comparison. Monk has a tragic backstory that Holmes didn't. Similarly, Holmes is arrogant while Monk is awkward. And whereas Holmes only has Dr. John Watson by his side, Monk had two different sidekicks.
In the first two-and-a-half seasons, Monk's personal assistant/nurse/Watson is Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), a no-bs Jersey gal. Then, after "Monk" season 3, episode 9, "Mr. Monk Takes His Medicine," Sharona abruptly departs, moving back to New Jersey and remarrying her ex-husband. In the following episode, "Mr. Monk and the Red Herring," Monk meets...

If you miss The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Prime Video has a brand new show from the same creator that's a must-watch!
Prime Video has been known for some big shows, although not as much of an awards darling as other streamers. A major exception was The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, the writer/producer behind the beloved The WB/The CW dramedy Gilmore Girls, the series focused on Midge Maisel, a 1950s housewife who, after discovering her husband’s cheating, embarks on a career as a stand-up comic.
The show was a huge success not just with audiences but critics as well. It’s the most honored Prime Video original show with multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG award wins for stars Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein, and Tony Shalhoub. Sherman-Palladino herself earned Emmys for Best Comedy Series and her writing.

Mark Wahlberg kicked off this year with the aviation thriller, Flight Risk, which was directed by Mel Gibson, but nearly 20 years ago, he starred as a one-man army in an action thriller dominating streaming charts. Wahlberg features alongside Michael Peña and Kate Mara in Shooter, the 2007 political thriller following an expert marksman living in exile who is forced back into his old life after being double-crossed and blamed for an assassination attempt on the President’s life. Shooter has been streaming on Paramount+ for years, but the film has recently resurfaced in the streamer’s top 10, sitting at #5 at the time of writing. Shooter earned scores of 47% from critics and 80% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and the film grossed $95 million at the box office against a $61 million budget.
Shooter is based on the novel Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter, and Jonathan Lemkin adapted the book with Antoine Fuqua directing.

It’s not every day that a long-forgotten romantic comedy resurfaces on Netflix and claims a top spot on the trending charts. But that’s exactly what’s happened with Life or Something Like It, starring Angelina Jolie, which has recently found new life on the streaming platform. Despite a dismal 28% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a lukewarm reception during its theatrical run, the film is suddenly drawing the attention of a modern audience—one that’s perhaps more open to its quirky charm and existential heart.
A Different Kind of Rom-Com
At first glance, Life or Something Like It seems like a standard early-2000s rom-com. Jolie plays Lanie Kerrigan, a Seattle-based television reporter with platinum blonde hair, a meticulously curated life, and a high-powered career path that appears to be heading in one direction—up. Back when flip phones ruled and crime shows were everywhere, Monk stood out like a sore thumb, one that had to be washed 27 times. Adrian Monk wasn’t your typical detective. He was a genius with germ issues, a human magnifying glass with 312 phobias, and the reason millions of us developed an odd respect for hand wipes. Tony Shalhoub made Monk iconic, but the rest of the gang, Natalie, Stottlemeyer, Randy, and even Sharona, brought their own brand of chaos, charm, and comedy.
For eight glorious seasons, they solved murders, wrestled personal baggage, and somehow made Ocd oddly heartwarming. After the show wrapped in 2009, fans waited years for a comeback. Then boom, 2023’s Mr. Monk’s Last Case dropped like a nostalgic mic, reuniting the core crew. It reminded us just how much we missed this quirky crime-solving family. Somewhere amid the mounds of "content" on Netflix's servers are some pretty good romantic comedies. The streamer isn't too bad when it comes to this particular genre, offering everything from beloved '90s classics such as "Notting Hill" to more modern hits such as Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney's frisky and fun "Anyone But You." Sadly, "Life or Something Like It" probably won't be making any lists of the best Netflix rom-coms anytime soon — though there might be hope yet.
What on earth is "Life or Something Like It?" Well, that sort of gets to the issue with this movie, which is that nobody saw it when it debuted in theaters back in 2002. Starring Angelina Jolie and Edward Burns, the film follows a reporter who interviews a supposed prophet, only to be told that her demise is imminent and that she's wasting her life. Comedy, romance, drama, true crime - but enough about my life. As it turns out, Netflix also has all of that in store for you this week. Get those blue blocker glasses and eyedrops ready, fam - it's binging time again!

Glen Powell picked up CinemaCon’s Star of the Year award Thursday night, and he dedicated a piece of his acceptance speech to sharing a story about one of his early jobs when he was, well, not the movie star he is today.
The gig came courtesy of Robert Rodriguez’s 2003 franchise effort, Spy Kids 3: Game Over, and it marked Powell’s first film role. The part was so small that he’s listed on IMDb as “Long-fingered boy.” But something happened on set that Powell has never forgotten.
“I don’t know if Cheech Marin is in the room,” Powell said as he scanned the crowd seated inside the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. “Hey, my boy Cheech.”

Spy Kids star Carla Gugino looks back on one major problem she had with her role in the film franchise. She played the kids' mother, Ingrid Cortez, alongside Antonio Banderas as their father.
Gugino told People that she felt too young to be the mother of two preteen children when filming Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids movie, which was released back in 2001. "I was 27 when I did that role, so I was way too young to play the part, because I was supposed to have been a spy for 10 years, and then I had two kids, who were like 9 and 11," she said.
She was given some wise advice by Antonio Banderas, with the seasoned action star telling her not to worry about her concerns too much. "Robert looked at me and was like, 'You do your job and no one will notice.'" Banderas' words of wisdom worked, and the...

Meanwhile, there is an expansive library of hidden fantasy TV gems that don't get the recognition they deserve.
Whether overshadowed by competition, didn't have enough promotion or were unjustly canceled after one or two seasons, these fantasy shows have largely fallen under the radar. Nevertheless, dedicated fandoms have acknowledged these shows for the aesthetically pleasing and wildly creative narratives they are. For eight seasons, "Monk" struck that perfect balance between hard-cracking detective work and comedy. Police procedurals were a dime a dozen in the early 2000s, but the thing to set this one apart from its contemporaries was the fact the titular Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) dealt with obsessive-compulsive disorder. This fueled his 312 phobias, which occasionally got in the way of him solving cases, but they also allowed him to view the world in a unique way that would help him solve various crimes.
"Monk" ended in 2009, but fans got one last fix thanks to 2023's made-for-Peacock movie, "Mr. Monk's Last Case," which /Film called "an overdue reunion" with much of the central cast reprising their roles. But it's not like the cast was kept in stasis for 13 years between the show's ending and the reunion. Many of them went on to other things, filling out their filmographies with myriad other projects.

Often likened to the hit early 2000s series Monk starring Tony Shalhoub, ITV's Professor T has managed to capture a similar sense of classy wit and clever crime-solving, starring British comedy legend Ben Miller. After a fourth season was announced prior to the third's debut episode, the weight was on the shoulders of this Belgian drama-inspired show's Season 3 to deliver on what many saw as the most refreshing crime series on British TV at the time, to repay those in charge who had the faith to blindly renew. Thankfully, that faith paid off, with Season 3 accumulating a greater average viewership per episode than Season 2, and even upping the quality across the board.
