Robert Schwartzman, who found critical success with his recent documentary about the British Invasion band The Zombies, has begun work on another music doc, this one about Las Vegas legend Wayne Newton.
The director revealed that the “Danke Schoen” singer would be his next subject Thursday night during a Q&a session that followed a screening of Hung Up on a Dream: The Zombies Documentary (2023) at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.
Newton, 83, was just a teenager when he began performing in Las Vegas with his older brother, Jerry, and the colorful live performer has logged tens of thousands of performances in the city — and he’s still going strong.
Born in Virginia and raised in Arizona, Newton was generously given “Danke Schoen” to record in the early 1960s by “Mack the Knife” singer Bobby Darin, and the song peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The new trailer for a raw documentary about Francis Ford Coppola's self-financed passion project, Megalopolis, reveals the epic production behind the 2024 flop. The five-time Oscar winner spent $120 million to fund the movie that took him over 40 years to make. With an idea first conceived in 1977, the Godfather filmmaker began writing the script in 1983, but it wasn't until last year that the movie finally made it into the theaters.
Megalopolis' star-studded cast features Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Giancarlo Esposito, Laurence Fishburne, and many others. However, despite the star power and Coppola's reputation, the movie faced a series of challenges in marketing and only grossed around $14 million against a massive budget.
Now, Utopia has released a new trailer for Mike Figgis' documentary, titled Megadoc, teasing a never-before-seen look at Coppola's journey in shaping the world of Megalopolis. From unfiltered interviews to a close-up view of Coppola's process, the documentary...

"The magic and making of Francis Ford Coppola's epic Megalopolis." Utopia has revealed the first look teaser trailer for a new making of documentary film titled Megadoc, from director Mike Figgis. This mega documentary is trying to be the Hearts of Darkness (which was a look at Coppola's troubled Apocalypse Now set) for Megalopolis, which opened in theaters last year. The only problem is that Megalopolis not only flopped big time, but it's just not a good movie by any measure, and Coppola needs to accept this. I get that he spent tons of money on it, and he's trying to be bold and provocative again, but it's a complete mess and most people don't care about it (unlike with Apocalypse Now). This Megadoc features appearances by Francis Ford Coppola (but of course!), Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Nathalie Emmanuel, Dustin Hoffman, Giancarlo Esposito, Chloe Fineman, Shia Labeouf, Laurence Fishburne,...

After receiving Academy Awards and becoming an icon of Hollywood, Francis Ford Coppola just wants to have “fun.” The auteur’s version of playing around? Directing a self-funded $120 million epic.
The making of Coppola’s controversial “Megalopolis” is captured in documentary “Megadoc” by filmmaker Mike Figgis (Figgis previously helmed the Oscar-nominated “Leaving Las Vegas” and is known for directing episodes of “The Sopranos” and “The Affair.”) “Megadoc” is billed as an “unfiltered” look into Coppola’s “Megalopolis” and his creative process as a whole. The official synopsis for “Megadoc” reads: “A raw, fly-on-the-wall documentary about Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-long journey in creating his self-financed passion project, ‘Megalopolis.’ The bold and unrelenting epic returns in Mike Figgis’ portrait of Coppola’s creative process – weaving together archival material, unfiltered cast interviews, and a close-up view of how the legendary filmmaker drew from Roman history, political allegory, and his own singular vision...

Francis Ford Coppola’s controversial “Megalopolis” production is now being given the documentary treatment. Mike Figgis directs “Megadoc” about the making of Coppola’s self-funded $120 million epic. While the buzzy cast included a slew of “canceled” actors as well as beloved stars, the feature was plagued with allegations of wild on-set antics and unwanted advances against extras (Coppola has denied the claims.) Figgis, meanwhile, was on set to capture it all.

The 1970s were a tumultuous time in the United States. Whether you look at political scandals like Watergate, the fallout of the Vietnam War, and severe economic unrest, Americans were feeling quite cynical. Given the vibes in the country at the time, much of what cinema brought reflected the moral ambiguity and raw grit that was fresh on the minds of viewers at the time. Films such as "The Godfather" and "Taxi Driver" are a showcase of some of New Hollywood's rising filmmakers, whose creative sensibilities influenced cinema for generations, and helped reflect the collective cynicism of the American people in that decade. You can read /Film's ranking of the 15 best films of the 1970s here.

With its future on streaming and physical media still uncertain (and probably dire), there might be only one way to see Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis: on the big screen. And while the original theatrical run has come, gone and practically imploded in between, the director is taking the show on the road.
Officially titled “An Evening with Francis Ford Coppola and Megalopolis”, the event will not only feature the film but also a post-screening Q&a with the director himself under the theme of “Bow to Change Our Future.” As for locations, the six-city tour will kick off in Red Bank, New Jersey before heading off to Port Chester, New York, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, and San Francisco.
As per Coppola in a statement, “This is the way Megalopolis was meant to be seen, in a large venue, with a crowd and followed by intense interactive discussions about the future.

[The following story contains spoilers from the Netflix movie Nonnas.]
In Nonnas, the Netflix movie based on Joe Scaravella’s nonnas-centric restaurant on Staten Island, Vince Vaughn‘s Joe is inspired to open the fictional version of Enoteca Maria after his mother dies, suggesting that the eatery will help him keep his mom’s memory alive, because “food is love.”
That intense affection was felt offscreen among Vaughn; the movie’s superstar cast of nonnas played by Susan Sarandon, Brenda Vaccaro, Talia Shire and Lorraine Bracco; Joe Manganiello, who plays Scaravella’s real-life best friend; and married writer Liz Maccie and director Stephen Chbosky.
“I was drawn to the absolute heart and goodness and kindness of it. I felt so lucky to put something good out into the world,” Maccie told The Hollywood Reporter of what attracted her to Nonnas‘ true story at the movie’s recent premiere. “I also just felt the reflection of my own family in the story,...

Netflix has developed a trend of leaving out certain benchmark movies in the recent past. One such film is Vince Vaughn’s The Break-Up.
As the streaming giant has put the 55-year-old actor’s Nonnas in its Top 10 list, the absence of his The Break-Up on Netflix is noticeable more ever than before. While the Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston starrer 2006 rom-com might not have been a critical hit, it won over the audience.
Directed by Peyton Reed, The Break-Up, the rom-com grossed over $205 million at the box office. However, the film not only cemented Vaughn’s position as a bankable star but also helped in his emotional development.
The Break-Up explores the equation between two people who don’t know how to navigate a relationship
Vince Vaughn once said that though he was offered several rom-coms, he didn’t find them appealing, as most of them followed a similar formula.

Business is booming for Nonnas, as the Vince Vaughn-led Netflix movie continues to connect with audiences.
Based on a true story, director Stephen Chbosky’s feature centers on Staten Island restaurateur Joe Scaravella (Vaughn), who is grieving the loss of his mom when he sets out to open an eatery with actual Italian grandmothers working in the kitchen. Co-starring Susan Sarandon, Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire and Brenda Vaccaro, the title topped Netflix’s English-language film charts for its first two weekends, collecting 15.3 million views in its initial three days and a total of 33.3 million in 10 days, according to the streamer’s internal rankings.
During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter to celebrate the film’s popularity, Vaughn discusses how the movie’s specificity makes it more accessible, potential sequel conversations and why Hollywood has hit “an all-time peak of overthinking.”

Before Nonnas warmed hearts on Netflix, hitting screens on May 9, its stars, Talia Shire and Brenda Vaccaro, shared a bizarre real-life moment that flew under the radar for decades. Long before playing fierce Italian matriarchs, the two actresses crossed paths in a way neither could’ve scripted, and at a time when one was just tagging along with her boyfriend.
Nonnas, inspired by Joe Scaravella’s true story, celebrates love, loss, and the power of nonna-made pasta. To honor his late mother, Scaravella opened a Staten Island restaurant staffed entirely by grandmothers. Now, the 2025 film is dishing out both nostalgia and surprising backstories from its leading ladies.

Delectable Italian food, passed down through the generations, is at the heart of Nonnas: Zeppole, capuzzelle, generations-old red sauce, the list goes on. So it makes sense that the actors and creatives behind the new comedy film have strong opinions about how these ancestral dishes should be prepared.

Vince Vaughn's New Comedy Movie With 81% Rt Score Becomes Netflix Global Hit Just Days After Release
Vince Vaughn has been working in the industry for over three decades, but in the mid to late '90s, his career really took off. He made his feature film debut playing a supporting character in the underdog sports film Rudy. From there, he became better known in the comedy genre for his role in the 1996 movie Swingers. Vaughn then acted in a series of other comedies throughout the end of that decade and the early 2000s, including Zoolander, Old School, Starsky & Hutch, and more.
Since his debut, Vaughn's career has had some genre fluctuations over the years. While he still does comedy, the 2010s saw him act in more dramatic work, including Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Seberg. Last year, he swung back to comedy when he had another notable role as the lead in the Apple TV+ crime comedy series Bad Monkey, which was well-received and wound...

Nonnas is a feel-good dramedy that you need more of. The truth is that the lead, Joe Scaravella (Vince Vaughn), has lost his mom and grandmother, and he wants to open an Italian restaurant on Staten Island even though he has no personal history of running an eatery. And it's all a true story.

Enjoyment of “Nonnas” is dependent on whether or not a viewer is charmed by the notion of “old-fashioned” filmmaking, as Stephen Chbosky’s latest biopic is the type of light-hearted crowd pleaser that Hollywood has effectively abandoned. While it’s squeaky clean, earning the rare PG rating, “Nonnas” is unwavering in its sincerity, as the film explores the feelings of guilt, shame, and depression that can emerge upon the death of a loved one. There are deeper ideas about intercommunity resistance and loneliness among the old people, but “Nonnas” opts to tell a straightforward, inspirational story that rewards the viewers with catharsis. While a cynic may claim that Chbosky has bent a real story into a formulaic Hollywood picture, “Nonnas” coast on the charm of its endearing cast.

Whether or not you have strong Italian roots, Netflix's Nonnas is for you. Most people can identify with comfort food when it's needed. With Nonnas, which was released on your favorite streamer on May 9, the comfort comes from taste and preparation.
The story was written by Liz Maccie and directed by her husband, Stephen Chbosky. The movie is a drama, but ultimately a heartwarming one. It's about family and friends and finding those people all over again.
As far as the cast, you will recognize most of the actors. In fact, you probably have seen much of their work. These are the people you need to know.
Cast of Nonnas is as delicious as the foodLorraine Bracco as Roberta
Bracco actually lives in Sicily part of the year, so she was perfectly cast for the role of Roberta, an outspoken nonna who has issues dealing with her Bolognese counterparts.

Actor Vince Vaughn's newest movie, Nonnas, is now streaming on Netflix. Upon arrival, the filmi has garnered a fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audiences are in agreement.
Currently, Nonnas has an approval rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score is not far behind at 75%. It's a pretty solid response to the film, which stars Vaughn as a man hoping to honor his mother by opening an Italian restaurant with local grandmothers serving as chefs. Critics have praised the movie's heartwarming story, even if it's not breaking new ground. While the cast members have also gotten recognition, some critics have said that the food dishes on display steal the show.
"Like an overstuffed cannoli, Nonnas is sweet, cheesy and abundant in empty calories," Al Alexander of Movies Thru the Spectrum said. "It’s comfort food to the max, epitomizing the best kind of mindless entertainment, courtesy of...

Directed by Stephen Chbosky and with an all-star cast, Netflix’s “Nonnas” is an unremarkable retelling of a remarkable event. Surprisingly, that might just be enough if you are in the right mood. Starring an earnest Vince Vaughn, the film gushes sentimentality with a plot championing the culinary skills of grandmothers. Vaughn’s Joe Scaravella’s persistent desire to open a restaurant where the chefs are all Italian grandmothers (nonnas) is an intriguing setup for a feel-good movie. Let us analyze how the film fares with that premise.
Nonnas (2025) Netflix Plot Summary and Movie Synopsis:
We open with lead protagonist Joe Scaravella’s (Vince Vaughn) childhood memory of his mother and nonna (grandma) producing culinary marvels in the old kitchen. Now a fifty-something-year-old man, Joe reminisces about those fond memories on the day of his mother’s funeral. Joe’s friends, the married couple Bruno (Joe Manganiello) and Stella (Drea de Matteo), console him.

From its first flicker of sepia‑toned memory to the bustling tables of Staten Island, Nonnas stakes its claim as an affectionate homage to familial ritual. The film springs from the real‑life ambition of Jody “Joe” Scaravella, who, in honoring his late mother, turned a ramshackle restaurant into Enoteca Maria—a haven where genuine Italian grandmothers, or “nonnas,” bring recipes passed down through generations. This premise transforms grief into communal celebration, inviting viewers to ponder how food anchors us to vanished moments and unspoken legacies.
Under Stephen Chbosky’s direction, the story unfolds as a sentimental dramedy that never succumbs to syrupy excess. Warmth radiates through sunlit kitchens and modest dining rooms, while humor surfaces in the gentle sparring of its elder cooks. Liz Maccie’s screenplay navigates fact and fiction with ease, sketching Joe’s journey without resorting to melodrama—a rare achievement in a genre that often oversimplifies sorrow.

Plot: After the loss of his mother, a man risks everything to honor her by opening an Italian restaurant with a group of local grandmothers as the chefs.
Review: What is more comforting than a home-cooked meal made by your grandmother? It is a cliche that holds in the hearts of countless people regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion. Good, heartwarming food can be as powerful an emotional trigger as anything. The new Netflix comedy, Nonnas, aims to hit you right in the feels with a sweet, family-friendly comedy about one man’s quest to open a restaurant in honor of his late mother by employing local Italian grandmothers, the titular nonnas, to be the chefs in his Staten Island establishment. With a cast of Italian-Americans evoking a story inspired by the real Enoteca Maria in New York, Nonnas is a safe and formulaic movie perfectly timed to Mother’s Day weekend.

I don’t know about you, but in the past few years, it’s been increasingly difficult to find a movie that you can watch with your parents, your grandparents, and also your little cousins, just because cinema has become too graphic thanks to the advantages of the Ott platform. Don’t get me wrong, though; I’m not saying that filmmakers shouldn’t have the freedom to be as creative as they want to be with their product, but I do miss a good little family drama that the entire family can get together to watch, and no, I don’t mean an animated Disney film, because the unfortunate truth is, a lot of people just don’t enjoy animation. So, when you’re in a big gathering and there’s a massive age gap, what do you look for? A film about food. We’ve all heard the...

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Netflix serves up the perfect cinematic recipe for moms (and their devoted sons) with Nonnas.
The title is Italian for grandmothers, and this warm, old-fashioned feel-good comedy in the Moonlight tradition and based on true events is tailor-made for its Mother’s Day weekend debut. Writer Liz Maccie provides some irresistible material for her real-life husband, director Stephen Chbosky, that is guaranteed to touch the heart and make no apologies for doing so. It also will make you very hungry.
A well-cast Vince Vaughn, miles away from his Swingers and Wedding Crashers past, plays the real-life dreamer Jody Scaravella (who goes by Joe or Joey), born and living in Brooklyn, who works for the Mta and always has been a loving son to his mom. When she dies, he is lost — until coming up with a plan to honor her and her mother,...

Like the old-school cooks in his new movie, Stephen Chbosky understands the importance of good ingredients. To tell the story of a middle-aged man’s impulsive leap into restaurant ownership, he’s gathered an accomplished cast wielding effortless charm. Nonnas is home-style all the way, forgoing jaw-dropping plating for something more reliable and predictable. It will strike a nostalgic chord or two for many viewers, and at any rate offers a welcome change of pace from Netflix’s true-crime and action offerings.
Vince Vaughn brings an unforced sincerity to the role of inexperienced entrepreneur Joey Scaravella, and the four nonnas (grandmothers) who join him in his unconventional culinary enterprise are played by Lorraine Bracco, Susan Sarandon, Talia Shire and Brenda Vacarro — heavy hitters moving nimbly. Though the movie unabashedly celebrates women in their 70s and 80s, it hasn’t the strained sensibility of those “ain’t these old gals something?...

I often find myself watching a film I know absolutely nothing about — something that’s become quite common, as I tend to avoid trailers and try to go in blind most of the time. Sometimes, I can’t even form any expectations beforehand. Netflix’s Nonnas is one of those cases. I did know that Vince Vaughn (Hacksaw Ridge) played the lead role and that the story somehow involved Italian grandmothers, based on the title, but that was about it.
Directed by Stephen Chbosky (Wonder) and written by Liz Maccie (Siren), the movie is based on the true story of Joe Scaravella, a man who, after losing both his mother and grandmother, decides to open a restaurant where elderly Italian women — the nonnas — are invited to work as chefs. Alongside Vaughn, the cast also includes Linda Cardellini (Green Book), Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike), and an extraordinary group of senior actresses...

The ingredients are simple, the cooking process unhurried and the history rich. The Italian dishes honored in director Stephen Chbosky’s sentimental dramedy “Nonnas” don’t come from professionally trained chefs, but from women of Italian heritage whose flavors have been perfected over generations. Each forkful packs a tasty homage to where they come from and to the people who loved them. And some of the film’s components are indeed authentic: Liz Maccie’s screenplay provides a fictionalized take on how Jody Scaravella opened Enoteca Maria, a real-life Italian restaurant where grandmothers cook.
Mta worker Joe (Vince Vaughn) has just lost his mother. The opening sequence shows him as a child observing as his mother and “nonna” (or grandmother) cook a feast for friends and family. The one-take Steadicam shot in Goodfellas, a three-minute-long scene that takes Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) and Karen Friedman (Lorraine Bracco) through the famous Copacabana nightclub, is one of the most celebrated scenes of Martin Scorsese's career. But Bracco gives all the credit for her performance in the scene to the late Liotta. She recently discussed the scene with Collider's Steve Weintraub during an interview for her new culinary comedy Nonnas. Says Bracco of the scene, which is part of a film that she is "very proud" of:

Audiences hoping to plow through the riches of Francis Ford Coppola’s Emersonian mind from the comfort of their own homes are out of luck.
According to sources close to the Oscar-winning legend, Coppola’s ill-fated box office calamity Megalopolis will never become available to stream, rent, or purchase on physical media. “He wants it to play in theaters, the way it was intended,” one unnamed source told The Hollywood Reporter.
In some ways ,it could be argued that Megalopolis is the last movie of its kind. Coppola used $120 million of his own fortune to produce the passion project independently and premiered the work at the Cannes Film Festival last year to mixed responses. Roughly one month after the Cannes premiere, Lionsgate purchased the distribution rights with a promise to release Megalopolis in theaters and on premium large format (Plf) screens later in the fall while Coppola retained the project’s ownership.

Hollywood legends gathered Saturday night to celebrate Francis Ford Coppola as he received the prestigious AFI Life Achievement Award, the highest honor bestowed by the American Film Institute.
Steven Spielberg and George Lucas presented Coppola with the 50th AFI Life Achievement Award.
Spielberg called Coppola “fearless.” Spielberg, who first met Coppola in 1967, said, “On one hand, you are a warrior for independent artists, you always champion their causes, but also, and always, you’re fearless in how open you are to ideas, opinions and inspiration.”
He recalled watching an early cut of “Apocalypse Now,” which was five hours long, with other filmmakers. “When the film ended, you asked us to tell you what we saw, how we felt. As Abbott Elementary’s “Volunteers” marked It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s first-ever crossover episode — not counting the show’s collab with the smash-hit multi-cam sitcom Old Lady House, of course — the television event could make history yet again: this time serving as The Gang’s first successful bid at desperately trying to win an award.
The beloved ABC series is reportedly staking its claim on the Sunny side of awards season, submitting Kaitlin Olson, Charlie Day and Rob McElhenney as potential nominees for two of the Emmys’ guest star categories, per Gold Derby. A running bit throughout It’s Always Sunny’s 17 seasons, the series has never earned an Emmy nod for anything beyond stunt coordination, making this mere consideration a particularly big W for The Gang.
It remains unclear why the Abbott Elementary overlords omitted Danny Devito from the running — do piss-soaked fur pelts mean nothing these days? — but...
