Watch: 'Search For The Next Air Bud' Video - Looking for a New Dog
Image
He's back! Air Bud returns! Is your dog the next Air Bud superstar? Cineverse and Air Bud Entertainment have announced the launch of a nationwide talent search to discover the next golden retriever to carry the 25-year legacy forward—embodying the charm, athleticism, and heart of the Air Bud character. They're already developing a new legacy sequel called Air Bud Returns set to hit theaters in 2026. The original sports comedy classic Air Bud was released in 1997 (directed by Charles Martin Smith; released by Disney) and became such a massive hit that they turned it into a franchise resulting in a grand total of 14 movies (so far). Only the first 3 were released in theaters, the rest are direct-to-video or direct-to-streaming (including Santa Paws recently). The Og Air Bud doggo was a pooch named Buddy who passed away in 1998. He was actually found as a stray in the Sierra Nevada in 1989. His...

Some movies fade with time. Others grow more powerful. And then there’s Brian De Palma’s 1987 classic The Untouchables — a crime drama that still feels bold, beautiful, and unshakably powerful nearly four decades later.

Why We’re Talking About The Untouchables (1987)

Even decades after its release, The Untouchables refuses to disappear from pop culture. It resurfaces through 4K restorations, anniversary screenings, and directors who continue to cite it as a major influence.

For many, this is a first‑time discovery. For longtime fans, it’s a film worth revisiting. If you’ve never seen The Untouchables (1987) — or it’s been years — now is the perfect time to experience why it remains one of the greatest crime dramas ever made.

The Power of Brian De Palma & His Cast

Released in 1987, The Untouchables was directed by Brian De Palma, who delivered one of the most visually striking gangster films in cinema history.

Air Bud Returns Has The Most Bonkers Plot Description You'll Read In 2025
Image
When it was released on August 1, 1997, Charles Martin Smith's sports picture "Air Bud" was already roundly mocked by the public at large. This was because of its Nike-inspired title, and for its premise, which many found risible: A 12-year-old boy, Josh (Kevin Zegers), moves to the small town of Fenfield, Washington after the death of his father. Despondent and alone, he happens into the company of a friendly golden retriever named Buddy, who is on the run from an evil party clown (Michael Jeter). Josh finds that Buddy can bound basetkballs off his nose and sink baskets, an extraordinary talent for a dog. Josh is on his school's basketball team, but they're not very good. I think you can see where this is headed.

In the film's climax, Josh and his team have to win a Big Game against another school, and they are one player short. Luckily,...

The Raid Director's New Action Movie With Tom Hardy Takes Over Netflix's Top Charts
Image
Tom Hardy is an actor with plenty of pedigree when it comes to intense action. From his roles as Max Rockatansky in 2015's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and Eddie Brock/Venom in the "Venom" film trilogy to his multiple collaborations with Christopher Nolan, he's a reliable hand whenever a project calls for a glowering character with a nigh-endless capacity for violence. Meanwhile, thanks to his Indonesian martial arts crime thrillers "The Raid" and "The Raid 2," Gareth Evans has established himself as a filmmaker who's extremely adept at making glowering characters with a nigh-endless capacity for violence clash with each other in entertaining ways.

Combine these two luminaries and Netflix, and you get "Havoc," the hyper-violent shoot 'em up that the streaming platform dropped on April 25, 2025. The premise of a Hardy-Evans team-up seems like a promise for a good time, and its audience has clearly been ready for it. In fact,...

David Boreanaz Was Like a "Terrifed Kid" Filming Buffy Pilot Episode
Image
With a Buffy The Vampire Slayer revival on its way, there have been several stories emerging about the original series as those involved in the iconic series have reminisced about their own time working on the show. Currently, it is not clear which actors from the original series will be making an appearance outside the original Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar. While Gellar was already established as an actor when taking on the role of Buffy Summers, her costar David Boreanaz was very new to the scene – and the director of the show’s pilot has explained exactly how green he was.

Before being expanded to the full first episode of the series, creator Joss Whedon made a 25-minute pilot, and while appearing on the Re-vamped with Juliet Landau podcast, Charles Martin Smith recalled Boreanaz being like a “terrified” kid. He said:

“David, playing Angel, he had his first scene I think ever in my episode.

Skeleton Crew Takes Cues From A Pre-Star Wars George Lucas Movie
Image
Spoilers ahead for the first episode of "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew."

"Star Wars" is known for a lot of things. Lightsabers. Swashbuckling action. Tyrannical villains. Daring escapes. True love. Soul-searing music. Special effects extravaganzas. Incredible filmmaking. Within certain parameters, you know exactly what you're getting into with a live action "Star Wars" project.

Sure, that pendulum can swing pretty hard. On one side, you can get pretty gritty and realistic stories — "Andor," for instance — and on the other side you can get much more innocent, swashbuckling, kid-oriented adventures like "Skeleton Crew." But one thing that unites all of the "Star Wars" projects is the inspiration from other films that filmmakers pour into their work. Sometimes, those films can be from their own interests, like Rian Johnson bringing his love of "Brazil" into his masterpiece "The Last Jedi," and other times it can be filmmakers bringing George Lucas's foundational reliance...

5 Deep Cut Horror Movies to Seek Out in December 2024
Image
New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This final installment of 2024 features five selections reflecting the month of December in some way, shape or form.

This month’s offerings include a Christmas slasher, a holiday-set creature feature, and more.

Madhouse (1974)

Pictured: Madhouse (1974).

Directed by Jim Clark.

It’s hard to resist a horror movie starring both Vincent Price and Peter Cushing. Even harder when it’s as on the nose as Madhouse (or The Revenge of Dr. Death). Two seasoned genre veterans like Price and Cushing were not as in demand as they used to be when this flick first came out; horror cravings had already started to change by then. And while it doesn’t lean as hard into the meta commentary as it could have,...

Trick or Treat (1986) is getting a standard edition 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release in March
Image
We found out last year that the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, would be getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release from Synapse Films. They were originally aiming for a Halloween 2023 release, but since they missed that month they ended up giving the movie a limited edition release last month. Those 6,666 units sold out so fast, with fans crashing the Synapse Films website along the way, that the company has now wisely decided to put together a standard edition of the Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release as well. Today, they announced that the street date for the standard edition is March 11th.

Directed by Charles Martin Smith from a screenplay by Rhet Topham, Joel Soisson, and Michael S. Murphey (with an uncredited polish from the Final Destination duo of James Wong and Glen Morgan), Trick or Treat has the following synopsis:...

No False Metal: Sammi Curr Lives With New 4K Release of 1986’s ‘Trick or Treat’ [Review]
Image
After a generic DVD run and Blu-rays released outside the U.S. market under the name Ragman, Synapse Films has answered the prayers of many horror-metal fans with the recent 4K release of 1986’s Trick or Treat. Having “No Wimps” and “No False Metal,” this film is considered by many to be the quintessential heavy metal horror flick, partially thanks to a perfectly apropos soundtrack provided by the band Fastway.

After constantly being harassed by the cool kids at his high school, Eddie Weinbauer aka “Ragman” finds solace in listening to the music of his idol Sammi Curr to get through the abuse. Not only is he a famous heavy metal star, but Curr is also an alum at Eddie’s high school where he became an outcast-made-good into metal stardom. And this is why Eddie feels a faux bond and extreme idolization for Curr since he believes they share the same origin story,...

Trick Or Treat Limited Edition 4K Uhd + Blu-ray: "From the early days of DVD, one movie more than any other has been requested by horror fans and metal heads all over: Charles Martin Smith’s heavy metal horror classic Trick Or Treat. 10 Gangster Movies Criticized By Experts
Image
Gangster movies often tell the stories of real criminals or claim to have their basis in fact, although some experts question the validity of these depictions. As an insanely violent genre that showcases the most extreme sides of criminality, its not surprising that some filmmakers exaggerate for dramatic effect. However, thats not to say gangster movies shouldnt be held accountable, and its important that if something claims to be a true story, the movie should stand up against cold, hard facts.

Some of the greatest gangster movies of all time have been criticized for accuracy issues. Timeless classics by directors like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola have had their fair share of historical detractors who took issues with different scenes, performances, or narrative choices. This can also be an issue for fictional films, as even if the characters were not supposed to be real, they were usually set within...

George R.R. Martin's short film Mary-Margaret Road Grader to screen at Wasteland Film Festival
Game of Thrones (2011)
A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin took to his Not A Blog this week with more updates, and as is mandated by the old gods and the new, we are here to discuss them. Last week Martin published a post announcing that he'd returned from his month-long trip to Europe, where he visited the set of the Game of Thrones spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in Belfast, attended the World Science Fiction Convention in Glasgow, and more. He also said that he would soon be airing some grievances about House of the Dragon season 2 in the near future.

This blog post, titled "September Morn," doesn't get into the nitty-gritty for House of the Dragon. Instead it's a much more cheerful update, all about the short films Martin has been producing based on the works of author Howard Waldrop. One of them, Mary-Margaret Road Grader,...

Further details about the project are scant, but we’re told that it’s within the sci-fi genre, and that filming recently wrapped at an undisclosed location in New Mexico. Michael Cassutt (The Twilight Zone) directed from his own script, with Steve Graham (Z Nation), Elias Gallegos (Dark Winds), and Mark Steinig (Killer Kafe) producing alongside Martin for Fevre River Packet Company.

Lensed by Alexander Yellen (Z Nation), the film stars Lina Esco (S.W.A.T.) and features Charles Martin Smith (American Graffiti) and Matt Frewer (Fear the Walking Dead) in supporting role.

In a statement on the project, Martin simply deadpanned, “Summer is coming” — in a...

Peter Bart: Coppola’s Utopian Epic Stirs Debate At Cannes While Former Partner George Lucas Quietly Sets His Own Pricey, Futuristic Surprise
Image
The Megalopolis parties and debates last week generously fed Cannes’ appetite for media buzz. Fest-goers were reminded that Francis Coppola’s journey had been a thrill ride for those who witnessed it, invested in it or were impacted by its turmoil.

The auteur was trailed all week by fans and family, many having survived the melodramatic ordeals of One from the Heart, the operatic intrigues of Apocalypse Now and finally the utopian fever dream titled Megalopolis, which he financed by putting $120 million of his own money on the line.

All represented a defiant challenge to the pre-algorithmic definitions of risk and reward. But one long-term participant in the Coppola drama was a non-presence in Cannes last week — though he is receiving an honorary Palme d’Or on Saturday.

He’s George Lucas, the billionaire nerd from Modesto who in former years contributed a discipline and order to their company’s (Zoetrope) unruly landscape.

Fred Roos Dies: Oscar-Winning ‘Godfather Part II’ Producer & Longtime Coppola Collaborator Was 89
Image
Fred Roos, the Oscar-winning The Godfather Part II producer and longtime executive producer for Francis Ford Coppola and Sofia Coppola, died Saturday in Beverly Hills at 89, four days shy of his 90th birthday.

The news about Roos, who won his Godfather Part II Oscar and later was nominated for Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, comes as Francis Ford Coppola is here at the Cannes Film Festival, 45 years after winning the Palme d’Or for Apocalypse Now. Coppola is in town with his $120 million passion project Megalopolis, which had its world premiere last week. Roos is billed as producer on Megalopolis.

The news also comes after Coppola’s wife of 61 years, Eleanor, died April 12. Roos was an executive producer on Hearts of Darkness, her famed documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now that won them both an Emmy in 1992.

Roos was Francis Coppola’s co-producer on The Conversation, The Godfather Part II and Apocalypse Now,...

“Your son, the f—k up, finally did it”: No One Negotiates Like Kevin Costner as Yellowstone Star Didn’t Back Down from a Fight That Could Have Cost Him ‘The Untouchables’
Image
Kevin Costner was a rising young actor featuring in minor roles in the early 80s. The future superstar was on the verge of stardom by the mid-80s and was cast in two films that would become his breakout hits. First, he was cast in Roger Donaldson’s action thriller No Way Out. After finishing that film, he was approached by director Brian De Palma for the crime drama The Untouchables.

Kevin Costner and Gene Hackman in No Way Out

Costner was not a big name at the time but Paramount and De Palma seem to know the potential that he had. No Way Out had also not come out yet and the studio led with a generous $800,000 offer for the role of Eliot Ness in The Untouchables. Costner, knowing the responsibility of playing a real-life American hero bargained his way to increase his pay to $1 million.

Disney Films That Should Get The Prequel Treatment After Mufasa: The Lion King
Image
Disney's recent cinematic output has allowed fans to return to some of their favorite worlds, enjoying both new and reimagined adventures with iconic characters like the Genie from Aladdin and Indiana Jones. Although some audiences have bemoaned the lack of originality on display in Disney's modern movies, they do provide a nostalgic look back at the studio's impressive back catalog. Disney has recently shared a trailer for 2019 Lion King's prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, prompting viewers to suggest which other of the company's previous films could make for superb prequel releases.

Disney has been responsible for some of the most colorful narratives, with expansive worldbuilding that deserves to be explored further. Producing prequels on these blockbuster hits would allow the creative teams to expand further on their characters, and show the events that led to the individuals viewers know and love from their original films. Sometimes, prequels can provide a...

The Twilight Zone (1985 – 1989) – Horror TV Shows We Miss
Image
Well, this is a semi-dangerous decision. Yes, I’m starting with The Twilight Zone 80s. Niki, haven’t we been telling you to do Og Twilight Zone… why are you doing this? A couple of reasons, the first being that this has been on repeat for me the past 6 months or longer, with Tales from the Crypt never being too far behind it. The other being that I felt like it. You’re lucky I didn’t start with Night Gallery, or maybe that’s what you wanted. So let’s talk 80s Twilight Zone, or New Twilight Zone, or Twilight Zone reboot/revival, whatever you choose to call it.

The reason to give it another go was simple. Rod Serling, my personal hero, sold the rights to Twilight Zone after the show ended its run in 1964. The studio bought the rights even though they weren’t exactly ready to start it up again.

Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
Review: George Lucas’s American Graffiti on Universal 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
Even more than his long-time colleague and friend, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas is the boy who never grew up. For one, Star Wars is so inspired by sci-fi serials like Flash Gordon and the WWII dogfight movies that his imagined sci-fi universe feels oddly antiquated, and befitting its setting in a moment “a long, long time ago.” No less fitting is that American Graffiti, Lucas’s breakout hit, is a love letter to his youth in the 1950s and ’60s, and that it’s become the ur-text of the nostalgia movie as a subgenre. Everything from Happy Days to The Big Chill lives in its shadow, though given the shininess of the film’s surfaces, from the neon-lit drive-ins to chrome-plated cars that have been buffed to perfection, perhaps it’s more accurate to say that the film’s descendants are illuminated by its gleaming glow.

American Graffiti has the most threadbare of plots.

Trick or Treat (1986) is making its streaming debut just in time for Halloween
Image
The 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, is getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) from Synapse Films. We’re still waiting to hear a release date for that, as obviously the company wasn’t able to meet the hoped-for October release window – but while we wait for the special physical media release, Trick or Treat is set to making its streaming debut on the Screambox service this Friday, October 27th! Just in time for Halloween viewing!

Directed by Charles Martin Smith from a screenplay by Rhet Topham, Joel Soisson, and Michael S. Murphey (with an uncredited polish from the Final Destination duo of James Wong and Glen Morgan), Trick or Treat has the following synopsis: This mesmerizing horror adventure takes you into the terrifying dark side of rock’n’roll. Marc Price (Family Ties) stars as Eddie Weinbauer,...

Star Wars' Forgotten Han Solo Knows Exactly Why He Failed
Image
It's likely well-known to Starwoids the world over that multiple now-famous actors initially auditioned to play the role of Han Solo in George Lucas' 1977 film "Star Wars." The role ultimately ended up going to Harrison Ford, but Kurt Russell, Nick Nolte, and Christopher Walken also tried out. One can also find old video footage of Charles Martin Smith reading for Luke Skywalker, and Perry King reading for Han. While both King and Smith are talented actors, looking at their audition tapes reveals why neither of them appeared in "Star Wars." They simply didn't have a good handle on the material in that audition. Ford, meanwhile, brought a certain "it-factor" quality that made him imminently magnetic.

King, however, wasn't left out of the "Star Wars" loop entirely. In 1981, writer Brian Daley and director John Madden adapted "Star Wars" into a 13-episode radio serial that broadcast on Kusc in Los Angeles. The...

This 50 Year Old Movie Remains a Coming of Age Classic
Image
American Graffiti is George Lucas's most personal film, drawing inspiration from his own experiences growing up in Modesto, California in the 1960s. The film captures the end of an era, showcasing the last night of youth before the characters transition into adulthood, symbolizing the loss of innocence for a generation. American Graffiti's success played a significant role in shaping the film industry, as studios recognized the power of youth-driven films and helped usher in the blockbuster era.

While he's unquestionably best known today for taking mass audiences to a galaxy far, far away, George Lucas first enjoyed success on a much more immediate, personal scale. His breakout film, American Graffiti, which celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this month, remains arguably his finest achievement as a writer and director.

Released at the perfect time, in which the film industry was struggling to rediscover its identity in the midst of the studio system's collapse,...

Every Movie Leaving Netflix in September 2023
Image
Movies are always coming and going on streamers whenever a new contract begins or an old contract expires. After losing some great movies last month, Netflix will be losing more this month, including teenage 50's antics, half-demon time-traveling anime epics, classic Rocky movies, and more.

Quite a few are leaving on the 1st, including George Lucas' car classic American Graffiti, then the four anime films InuYasha, also the three Rush Hour movies, and the war bio Seven Years in Tibet. Then, last but not least, the first five Rocky films. So here's everything we know about these movies leaving Netflix in September 2023.

American Graffiti (Sept. 1)

Leaving Sept. 1 is one of George Lucas' best movies outside of Star Wars, American Graffiti, his love letter to the 50s cruise culture where four different friends spend their last night together in small Modesto before heading to college in this coming-of-age classic that earned...

Trick or Treat (1986) Blu-ray and 4K release will include documentary, commentary, interviews
Image
Last week, we heard the awesome news that the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, is getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) from Synapse Films. A specific date for this release has not yet been announced, just that they’re hoping to get it out into the world by the end of 2023 – and ideally, of course, it would be out in October. Synapse Films is collaborating with Michael Felsher of Red Shirt Pictures on this release, and now Felsher has revealed some details to Rue Morgue, confirming that we can expect to see a documentary, a commentary, and interviews on the disc.

Directed by Charles Martin Smith from a screenplay by Rhet Topham, Joel Soisson, and Michael S. Murphey (with an uncredited polish from the Final Destination duo of James Wong and Glen Morgan), Trick or Treat...

Trick or Treat: 1986 horror classic getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release!
Image
The 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat is one of my all-time favorites, but since the VHS era it has only gotten a barebones DVD release (which is available for a high price Here) and a Blu-ray in Germany. So this ranks high as some of the coolest news I’ve seen lately: Synapse Films is putting together a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) of Trick or Treat that they’re hoping to send out into the world by the end of 2023!

Full details on the release aren’t available at this time, as they’re too early in the process, but Synapse Films is collaborating with Michael Felsher of Red Shirt Pictures to make sure it’s the best it can be. The livestream announcement can be viewed on Facebook.

The Untouchables: Revisiting Brian De Palma’s Classic
Image
It’s no exaggeration to say that filmmaking legend Brian De Palma has had an eclectic and often spectacular career, spanning over fifty years that have brought audiences many unforgettable and classic movies. 1976’s Carrie remains an often referenced (we’re looking at you Wednesday!) horror masterpiece, crime drama Scarface is all time gangster gold, while his first entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise is still perhaps one of the strongest instalments for a then young and even more sprightly Tom Cruise. However, it’s De Palma’s 1987 The Untouchables, an adaptation of the 1950’s TV serial that focuses on the attempts to bring down crime lord Al Capone, that really shows his versatility as a director. The award winning film features several iconic scenes that are now etched in the minds of movie fans around the globe; from the Union Station shoot-out with full-on baby-in-great-peril slow-mo action shot, to...

Sean Connery Helped Kevin Costner 'Survive' Acting Opposite Robert De Niro
Image
Before "The Untouchables" made Kevin Costner a bankable star, the only points of reference directors and casting agents had to gauge his acting potential were two early films, the coming-of-age road trip movie "Fandango" and Lawrence Kasdan's bombastic Western "Silverado." Brian De Palma saw something in Costner's cocksure portrayal of Jake in "Silverado" and thought he might be able to add a spark and an edge to federal agent Elliot Ness.

After landing the role, Costner had the unenviable task of going up against Robert De Niro's blazing-hot energy as Al Capone. In a now-famous Hollywood story, Bob Hoskins was originally set to play Capone until De Niro accepted the part, forcing De Palma to pay 200,000 to Hoskins to not appear in the film. Costner landed 1 million for the role, which was a big gamble for a production that already had a 25 million budget. Costner's star was definitely on the rise,...
