Seeing as how the 1980s gave us four Halloween movies, five Elm Streets and no less than eight Friday the 13ths, it’s pretty easy to see why the decade is considered the golden age of slasher flicks. Throw in all the lesser known psycho-killer/dead teenager flicks from the era that have since gone on to become bona fide cult classics – the Sleepaway Camp trilogy, Maniac, Pieces, etc. – and it’s pretty much indisputable that the Reagan years were indeed the glory days of cinematic mass murder.
Even in a decade glutted with degenerate cinema classics like My Bloody Valentine and Silent Night, Deadly Night, there nonetheless remain several unsung, unheralded slasher movies from the 1980s that definitely deserve more retroactive respect and reverence. Sure, none of the following flicks may be on par with subgenre heavy hitters like Black Christmas or Twitch of the Death Nerve, but they...

On July 26, Deadline reported that “Bend it Like Beckham” will be bending it like Beckham once again, or so says its writer/director Gurinder Chadha. The original film, released 23 years ago in 2022 and starring Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley was an indie sleeper hit, grossing $76 million on a $6 million budget.
The comedy ended up being the harbinger of Knightley’s astronomical rise into stardom — coming just one year before “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” and “Love Actually.” In it, she is one of two soccer playing girls (the other played by Nagra), who attempt to pursue the sport professionally.
“I’m excited to revisit the original characters and revive the enduring story and build on the legacy we helped to create for the women’s game,” Chadha said, adding that “I’m pretty certain that everyone’s going to want to come back” and that...

Executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, and produced by Fisher Stevens, the scattered but stirring eco doc “We Are Guardians” assigns itself the unenviable challenge of providing a small — yet broadly comprehensive — window onto one of the greatest environmental crises in the history of our planet: The destruction of the Amazon rainforest. It’s a topic so vast that even a sprawling miniseries would struggle to contain it, and yet directors Edivan Guajajara, Chelsea Greene, and Rob Grobman manage to wrap their arms around the disaster in a little more than 80 minutes; not by simplifying the situation, but rather by contrasting the apocalyptic plainness of the problem with the infinite complexity of solving it.
The facts speak for themselves, tragic as it is that they don’t always listen to each other. One of several people in the film who help to anchor the project as more of a prompt to...

“We Are Guardians,” a documentary presented by executive producer Leonardo DiCaprio and producer Fisher Stevens, has raised over $1 million in rainforest preservation efforts through its charitable campaign ahead of a New York theatrical release Friday.
The project from co-directors Edivan Guajajara, Chelsea Greene and Rob Grobman is touring nationally in theaters through September and spotlights efforts by Indigenous leaders to protect the Brazilian Amazon amid invasion and deforestation.
“This is one of the most effective and successful documentary impact campaigns I have been involved with over my career,” Oscar-winning documentarian Stevens (“The Lincoln Project”) said in a statement. “Our team has hit and now surpassed all of our initial goals for the film, and we are only getting started.”
The documentary specifically focuses on the Indigenous people of Tembé and Guajajara in Brazil. As illegal loggers and invaders propagate deforestation on their land, individuals within these communities act as “Guardians...

If you remember Frédéric Auburtin's 2015 sports drama "United Passions," then you are a rare individual indeed. The $30 million prestige picture -- mostly funded by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, aka FIFA -- starred Tim Roth, "Jurassic Park" veteran Sam Neill, Gérard Depardieu, and Fisher Stevens, and it told the history of FIFA, from its formation in 1904 through the 2010 World Cup. It was a multigenerational story that traced the dramas and scandals the organization faced through the decades. Stevens played Cornelis August Wilhelm Hirschman, the president of FIFA from 1918 to 1920. Depardieu played Jules Rimet (president from 1921 to 1954), Neill played João de Havelange (1974 to 1998), and Roth played Sepp Blatter (1998 to 2015).
"United Passions" opened in 10 theaters in the United States in February of 2015 and made an embarrassing $918 on its opening weekend. Reports from Phoenix, Arizona, stated that the film made a whopping $9 opening weekend, meaning only one person bought a ticket.

In 2019, Edivan Guajajara, Chelsea Greene, and Rob Grobman began filming “We Are Guardians,” a documentary about Indigenous forest guardians fighting to protect their ancestral lands from relentless invasions and deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest.
The directors followed various forest guardians of Brazil as they fought to protect the Amazon rainforest from destruction.
“Through the smoke and confusion of the media coming from Brazil and the international community, we decided to mobilize and uncover the truth,” Greene and Grobman said in a joint statement.”We wanted to hear from those closest to the forest, and the fires, what was happening, from their perspective.”
After a year, Guajajara, Greene, and Grobman showed producers Zak Kilberg, Maura Anderson, and Fisher Stevens a reel of what they had captured in the Amazon. The producers, who at the time were forming their production company Highly Flammable, were immediately intrigued and decided to make “We Are Guardians...

It’s not news that the documentary market continues to be in flux, particularly for political documentaries, with many filmmakers complaining about a lack of distribution channels. So it’s good news that Netflix has closed a hybrid licensing deal for six documentary films that played well at festivals over the past year, but were not acquired by any distributor. Rather than leave the orphans in limbo, Netflix opted to give this group of diverse titles a distribution home.
The films include Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk’s “The White House Effect” and “In Waves and War,” Chris Smith’s “Devo,” Kimberly Reed’s “I’m Your Venus,” Matthew O. Henderson’s “A King Like Me,” and the late Sacha Jenkins’ “Sunday Best.”
This out-of-the-box Netflix deal gives the docs Netflix Original status in English-speaking territories the U.K., United States, and Canada. In territories outside the English language, they are available non-exclusively.

L.A.-based the Mediapro Studio U.S. & Canada has secured film adaptation rights to “The Museum of Cursed Artifacts,” an upcoming novel by Evan Spiliotopoulos, writer of 2017 Disney blockbuster “Beauty and the Beast.”
Described by the Mediapro Studio as action-packed, blending suspense, adventure and supernatural twists, “The Museum of Cursed Artifacts” begins with a famed entrepreneur completing his collection of cursed artifacts. He then takes his life in a shocking manner.
His family, gutted that he blew all his money but still hoping to turn a profit with this macabre museum, assemble leading experts to verify the items’ authenticity. All hell literally breaks loose.
In what the Mediapro Studio calls a “highly competitive deal,” rights to the novel were acquired in a two-book deal with Emily Bestler Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. One of Blade star Wesley Snipes’ most underrated movies is now free to stream. The actor and martial artist, who is best recognized for his role as the Marvel vampire hunter, a role he reprized in last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine, puts in a reliably charismatic performance as a boxer behind bars in the action/boxing/prison drama, Undisputed. You can now discover the movie without spending a dime, and it deserves a second round.
Released back in 2002, Undisputed is written, produced and directed by Walter Hill, the filmmaker behind the likes of the nightmarish ‘70s thriller The Warriors and producer of the Alien franchise. The movie stars Ving Rhames as George "The Iceman" Chambers and Wesley Snipes as Monroe "Undisputed" Hutchen, a pair of fighters who find themselves facing off while serving time behind bars. David Beckham previewed Victoria Beckham’s upcoming Netflix docuseries at Mip London on Tuesday, telling the streamer’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria that “it’s really special” — but getting the former Spice Girl to participate, even after the success of his “Beckham” doc, took some convincing.
“It took a minute to try and get her to agree with it,” the former soccer star and Emmy-winning producer said. “It wasn’t something that was easy. I think I’m the only one who could convince her and I did, eventually.”
Beckham said that viewers will see Victoria “in a different light” in the upcoming doc, which hails from his Studio 99 banner is being helmed by “Becoming” director Nadia Hallgren. The as-yet-untitled series started production in August and will follow Beckham’s journey from Spice Girls superstardom in the ‘90s to modern fashion maven with her eponymous brand.

Martin Scorsese's 1990 crime masterpiece "Goodfellas" is one of the finest gangster movies ever made and has the award shelf to prove it. Still, despite its impressive six Academy Award nominations, the most esteemed awards of the industry largely avoided the mob epic -- except for one particular golden statuette.
Joe Pesci held the fort at the 1991 Academy Awards ceremony with his Best Actor in a Supporting Role Oscar win for his amazing turn as the volatile Tommy DeVito, the wildest card in a movie full of wild cards. He became an Oscar-winning actor with his signature cool intact. However, unlike his character -- who, as his iconic "I'm funny how?" scene shows, is extremely verbose at most times -- the actor chose to keep his speech short and sweet, uttering only five words as he took the stage to receive the golden statuette. "It's my privilege. Thank you," Pesci said before exiting the stage.

While we still don’t have a title for Guy Ritchie‘s upcoming crime series, the Snatch and The Gentlemen filmmaker is clearly working his ensemble casting magic on the anticipated project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Geoff Bell, Lisa Dwan, Emily Barber, and Daniel Betts will join Guy Ritchie’s latest series. The group joins Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren for the show in production at MTV Entertainment and Paramount+.
Guy Ritchie’s untitled crime series revolves around “two warring families based in London whose enterprises stretch to all corners of the globe and the fiercely loyal “fixer” charged with protecting one of them at all costs.”
Thankfully, while the series’ title remains a mystery, THR knows who several cast members will play in the intriguing crime drama. No stranger to crime-related entertainment, Geoff Bell will play Richie, “the redoubtable leader of the up-and-coming south London Stevenson gang.

Lionsgate has removed Guy Ritchie thriller In The Grey from its scheduled late January 2025 release slot and has yet to give the film a new date.
British director Guy Ritchie was set to release two films in 2025, but things are less certain now given that the first of those two releases, In The Grey, has been removed from its January release slot by Lionsgate.
Ritchie wrote and directed the thriller, while the cast features Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, Eiza Gonzalez, Carlos Bardem, Fisher Stevens, Jason Wong, and Rosamund Pike. Two extraction specialists (played by Cavill and Gyllenhaal) must designate a route of escape for a senior female negotiator (Gonzalez). It was shot in the Canary Islands last year.
The stated reason for the film’s delay (per Deadline) is a simple one: it isn’t finished. Ritchie has been exceedingly prolific in the last couple of years, delivering two films...

In the Grey, the new action thriller from writer-director Guy Ritchie, has been pulled from its original January 17, 2025 release date, Collider reports. The film's distributor, Lionsgate, announced that In the Grey simply isn't yet ready for release. No new release date has been announced as of this time.
The film revolves around two extraction specialists who have to designate a route of escape for a senior female negotiator. It stars Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, Eiza Gonzlez, Rosamund Pike, and Fisher Stevens. This will mark the third collaboration between Ritchie and Cavill, after The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. It'll also be the third time Ritchie has worked with Gonzlez, who appeared in Ungentlemanly Warfare as well as the 2023 film The Covenant. Finally, it's round two for Ritchie and Gyllenhaal, who previously starred in The Covenant.
Fans gathered at CinemaCon 2024 got a sneak preview of In the Grey.

Guy Ritchie's next movie will no longer be hitting theaters in January 2025. Lionsgate has removed In the Grey, which reteams Ritchie with his The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare star Henry Cavill, from its 2025 release schedule.
According to Deadline, the reason Lionsgate has pulled In the Grey from its Jan. 17, 2025 release date is because the movie isn't finished. The action thriller wrapped filming in October 2024, meaning that Ritchie has spent more than a year completing post-production work and is still not finished. A new release date has not yet been announced by Lionsgate. It's a sad update for fans who were looking forward to seeing the filmmaker's third Cavill-led movie. The actor previously starred in 2015's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and 2024's The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.

2025 is slated to have several major blockbuster releases in the form of franchise sequels, reboots, and live-action adaptations. While 2024 featured considerably fewer major blockbuster releases compared to 2023's stacked lineup, 2025 is expected to have even more highly anticipated releases. At the time of writing, the biggest blockbuster releases of 2024 have been Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine, the only two films to eclipse more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
Rounding out the top 5 box office performers of 2024 thus far are Despicable Me 4, Dune: Part Two, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. A few more highly-anticipated releases will come out before end-of-year, the first of which is Ridley Scott's long-awaited Gladiator sequel starring Paul Mescal and Universal's film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Wicked, both of which release on November 22. Aaron Kaufman, the Emmy-nominated director behind Superpower, Sean Penn’s Paramount+ documentary about the Ukraine-Russia war, has died at the age of 51.
Deadline confirmed the news with Chad Verdi of Verdi Productions, who financed and executive produced some of Kaufman’s previous and upcoming projects, including Superpower. He died in Las Vegas of an apparent heart attack on Thursday.
Kaufman is perhaps best known for co-helming Superpower alongside Penn, and the effort translated into a News & Documentary Emmy nod in the Outstanding Politics and Government Documentary category. Let me hear you say Sweet Caroline because Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson will star in Craig Brewer‘s Song Sung Blue, an upcoming film inspired by Neil Diamond’s timeless music. Brewer’s musical drama hails from Focus Features, with Brewer as the project’s director and writer.
Based on the 2008 documentary of the same name by director Greg Kohs, Song Sung Blue revolves around the true story of two down-on-their-luck musicians (Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson) who form a joyous Neil Diamond tribute band, proving it’s never too late to find love and follow your dreams. John Davis and John Fox are producing the film for Davis Entertainment alongside Craig Brewer.
