Few creative talents have the breadth of a career equal to Lee Grant. NatGeo’s widely acclaimed new limited series “A Small Light” chronicles the heroism of Miep Gies and several other brave Amsterdam residents who hid Anne Frank and her family, as well as four other people from the Nazis in a hidden attic apartment in Otto Frank’s office building. After the eight Jewish residents were arrested and sent to concentration camps in 1944, it was Gies who saved Anne’s diary and kept it in her desk drawer. Otto Frank, who was the only member of the immediate family who survived the camps — Anne died of typhus in March 1945 at Bergen-Belson — returned to Amsterdam, Gies gave him Anne’s diary. And in 1947 “The Diary of a Young Girl” was published in Europe. Five years later, “Diary” made its way to America. It has been translated into over 67 languages.

Lewis John Carlino’s family-oriented Mafia tale was filmed four years before The Godfather: Kirk Douglas is a loose-cannon capo who bosses his own brother Alex Cord and won’t listen when his fellow kingpins talk about modernization. Irene Papas and Susan Strasberg are married to the mob, while veteran hoods Luther Adler and Eduardo Ciannelli provide the menacing atmosphere. Director Martin Ritt was supposedly not thrilled with the project yet it’s a polished, involving crime-time drama set both in New York City and Palermo, Sicily.

When it opened in 1967, critics largely dismissed "The Trip" as another low-budget Roger Corman production that was attempting to tap into the youth market. Indeed it was. However, like many of Corman's films- ranging from horror films to biker movies- "The Trip", which aspired to explore the current fascination with LSD, is taken far more seriously among film scholars today than it was during its initial release. The movie was directed and produced by Corman, as usual for distribution by American-International, which was go-to studio for "B" movies that were often made on shoestring budgets but which reaped impressive profits. Jack Nicholson, still a couple of years away from "Easy Rider" stardom, wrote the screenplay. The film starred two other future "Easy Rider" pop culture icons, Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, along with Susan Strasberg and Bruce Dern. Richard Rush, who picked up two Oscar nominations, best director and adapted screenplay, for his extraordinary 1980 film “The Stunt Man,” starring Peter O’Toole, died April 8 in Los Angeles. He was 91.

His wife Claude said he had been suffering from longtime health issues but that he died comfortably at home. She said in a statement, “He will be remembered for a string of landmark films in the 1960s and ’70s, culminating with his 1980 multi-Oscar-nominated classic, ‘The Stunt Man,’ which is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. To those who were privileged to know and love him, he will be even more warmly remembered, and missed, for his integrity, his loyalty, his endless generosity of spirit and his boundless support and mentorship of other filmmakers, writers or indeed anyone who ever dared to, in the words of his ‘Stunt Man’ hero Eli Cross, ’tilt at a windmill.

Destined, or doomed, to be remembered as Captain von Trapp in the 1965 film of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, Christopher Plummer, who has died aged 91, was a tremendous actor, and leading star, on stage, screen and Alpine meadow for more than six decades.

With an imposing physique, a broad brow, sculpted features and a magnificent voice, he played almost all the leading Shakespearean roles – mostly in his native Canada, at the Stratford, Ontario, Shakespeare festival. But he also had brief spells with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre in Britain, while maintaining a film career that never looked back after an auspicious debut in Sidney Lumet’s theatrical comedy Stage Struck (1958), alongside Henry Fonda and Susan Strasberg.

From the ‘70s on calendar horror was all the rage with the slasher crowd; Black Christmas begat Halloween which gave us Friday the 13th and on and on, a red ‘X’ flooding the dates throughout the year. Of course we can’t forget birthdays either, so after Happy Birthday to Me we were offered Sweet Sixteen (1983), an interesting, sometimes icky film that leans closer to murder mystery than it does slasher.

Released in mid September by Century International, Sweet Sixteen got lost amid the masked mutilators and supernatural shenanigans of the day, but that shouldn’t deter any ardent fan of the era and those seeking a horror film grounded in story more than exploitation – depending on how it’s viewed.

The story of Sweet Sixteen has an air of Choose Your Own Adventure about it depending on which version you watch – the theatrical cut or the director’s cut.

The story of The Other Side of the Wind – a film begun by Orson Welles in 1970 that finally arrived in theaters in 2018 – encapsulates the ongoing struggles of the great director when it came to getting a movie made. Finally assembled long after Welles’ death by Peter Bogdanovich, Frank Marshall and editor Bob Murawski, the released cut reveals Welles was an experimental artist to the last shot. Starring a quirky cast worthy of Touch of Evil that included John Huston, Susan Strasberg, Edmond O’Brien and Bogdanovich.

Franco Zeffirelli, the stylish and sometimes controversial theater, opera and film director, has died. He was 96.

Zeffirelli, who was Oscar-nominated for his 1968 version of “Romeo and Juliet,” died at his home in Rome at noon on Saturday, his son Luciano told the Associated Press. “He had suffered for a while, but he left in a peaceful way,” Luciano said.

While Zeffirelli was fond of making films with literary antecedents such as “Romeo and Juliet,” “Hamlet,” “Taming of the Shrew” and “Jane Eyre,” his legacy as director of extravagant opera and theater productions is probably more consistent and long-lasting.

He directed, co-wrote and co-produced the 1966 production of “Taming of the Shrew,” starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, one of the twice-married celebrated pair’s most successful co-starring assignments. Spirited and amusing, it paved the way for a youthful and sexy “Romeo and Juliet,” which was a major box office success in the U.

The final film of director William Girdler, The Manitou (based on the Graham Masterton novel of the same name) will make its Blu-ray debut this April courtesy of Scream Factory.

On Facebook, Scream Factory announced that they'll release The Manitou on Blu-ray on April 16th. Special features have yet to be revealed, but we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are announced. Orson Welles’ long-incomplete film “The Other Side of the Wind” has been a topic of fascination and intrigue for decades, billed as Welles’ final feature, and one that, like other projects before it (including “Moby Dick” and “Don Quixote”), had consistently been deemed unfinished. But after years of work from trusted collaborators following Welles’ death in 1985, “The Other Side of the Wind” is now complete, soon to be distributed on the streaming service platform Netflix, and has already made the festival rounds from Venice to Telluride to the recent New York Film Festival.

Never had the Netflix logo been welcomed by Venetian audiences with an applause as rapturous as the one it received when the iconic N popped up to introduce what was rightly billed the cinematic event of the year: Orson Welles’ much-awaited and finally restored The Other Side of the Wind.

It was a moment 48 years in the making. In 1970, Welles grouped together a cast of Hollywood giants to shoot what would turn out to be an eerily auto-fictional farewell opus. Beset by all sorts of financial constraints, the production would stretch, stall, and come to an infamous end. Rejected by major Hollywood studios, partly funded by Iranian production company Apostrophe until the 1979 Revolution — at which point the film effectively became property of the Ayatollah Khomeini and the people of Iran — The Wind would outlive Welles (who passed away in 1985) as an irreparably unfinished last work. Over a thousand reels languished...

How much do I love director William Girdler? Let me count the ways: his sense of grandeur in the face of modest budgets, his good naturedly humorous takes on the genre, his willingness to pay “homage” even when it costs him lawsuits, and the stone-cold truth that he got better at his craft with each and every film he made. Case in point: Day of the Animals (1977), the follow up to his smash hit Grizzly (’76) that quintuples down on the attacks in a righteous mélange of Disaster and Animals Gone Wild flicks.

Produced and released by Film Ventures International in May, Day of the Animals (Aka Something Is Out There) had a budget of $1.2 million and brought in only less than triple the cost. Having been 40 years in the making, Orson Welles final film, The Other Side of the Wind is finally seeing the light of day thanks to the streaming giant, Netflix. The on-demand service has now released the trailer for the film from the iconic filmmaker.

Dubbed a satire of both the studio system and New Hollywood, Welles began filming on the project back in 1970. Unfortunately, the picture was plagued by financial issues for a number of years before Welles died, never getting the chance to finish the piece.

The film stars John Huston as a film director named Jake Hannaford who returns to Los Angeles after years in self-exile in Europe with plans to complete work on his own comeback movie. Peter Bogdanovich, Susan Strasberg and his partner Oja Kodar also star.

Netflix has released a chaotic trailer for Orson Welles’ unfinished final film “The Other Side of the Wind,” just before its premiere Thursday at the Venice Film Festival.

John Huston stars as a high-profile Hollywood director making a comeback, much like Welles was attempting. The trailer mixes black-and-white and color footage, and two other filmmakers of the era — Peter Bogdanovich and Dennis Hopper — appear as characters.

Several characters in the trailer offer brutal assessments of Huston’s character, saying, “What he creates, he has to wreck. It’s a compulsion,” and, “He’s just making it up as he goes along.”

Welles shot the film-within-a-film between 1970 and 1976, and then worked on it until his death in 1985, leaving behind a 45-minute work print that he had smuggled out of France. Huston portrayed a temperamental film director battling with Hollywood executives to finish a movie — just like Welles did throughout his career.

Netflix has released the first trailer for Orson Welles’ “The Other Side of the Wind,” a film that was 40 years in the making and will finally premiere at Venice Film Festival this weekend.

Welles began filming the project in 1970 with cast members John Huston, Peter Bogdanovich, Susan Strasberg and Oja Kodar. Financial issues arose, and the production stretched for years and was ultimately never completed or released.

More than a thousand reels of film negatives were stored in a Paris vault until March 2017, when producers Frank Marshall (who served as Welles’s production manager during his initial shooting) and Filip Jan Rymsza pushed forward to complete the film.

“The Other Side of the Wind” tells the story of director J.J. “Jake” Hannaford (Huston), who heads back to Los Angeles after years of self-exile in Europe to complete his comeback movie.

It's pretty incredible that after all these years we are going to get to watch a brand new film from legendary director Orson Welles (Citizen Kane). It also may end up being one of the best films of the year!

Welles started shooting the film in the 1970s and was working on completing it up until the time he passed away in 1985. Unfortunately, the movie was plagued with financial problems and 96% of the film was reportedly completed.

Frank Marshall, who was the production manager during the original shoot, brought on a team of editors to go through more than 1,000 reels of film negatives that were sitting in a Paris vault until March 2017, when Netflix acquired it. They used that footage and a ton of notes and other materials that Welles left behind to complete the film.

The best film of 2018 just may be from a director who has been dead for over three decades. Throughout the better half of the ’70s, Orson Welles embarked on the production of The Other Side of the Wind, a project which was never completed while the legendary director was still alive due to financial issues. Welles' original six-year shoot was plagued by difficulties with production, finance and casting, as well as complex legal problems that led to the negative being impounded and the film left unfinished for over 40 years.

An original feature documentary on late actor-filmmaker Orson Welles is in the works at Netflix, and it will be helmed by Academy Award winning director Morgan Neville (“20 Feet from Stardom”). The documentary will explore the final fifteen years of Welles’ life and his complex relationship with the film industry, both artistically and commercially, through the lens of his final movie, “The Other Side of the Wind,” which he shot in the beginning of the 1970s and has remained unfinished since then.

“‘The Other Side of the Wind’ has long been a ghostly legend in cinema history, but the story behind it is equally fascinating,” Neville said in a statement. “I’m excited to be able to tell the incredible story behind this film and to explore what made Welles such an enduring figure.

Feature will debut on digital service at same time as The Other Side Of The Wind.

Netflix announced on Monday that Morgan Neville will direct an original documentary about the final 15 years of Orson Welles’s life.

Neville will explore the American titan’s complex artistic and commercial relationship with Hollywood.

Frank Marshall and Filip Jan Rymzsa will serve as executive producers on the feature, produced by Neville’s Tremolo Productions.

Netflix recently came on board to add completion funds and pay for the restoration of Welles’s last, unfinished film The Other Side Of Wind.

Marshall and Rymzsa are producing that project and it will have “a significant presence throughout the new documentary, providing a framework into the legendarily volatile dynamics between Welles and the industry.”

The two films will launch in tandem in 2018.

When I think of some of my favorite B films of the 1970s, my mind tends to drift towards the works of the late filmmaker William Girdler. This man made nine movies in six years before his tragic death in ’78 at the age of thirty; chief among them Abby (’74), Grizzly (’76), and Day of the Animals (’77). Now, quantity obviously doesn’t equal quality, and he made a few outright stinkers. But he was exciting to me because he became a better, more confident filmmaker with each film; this is especially evident with his final release, The Manitou (1978), your typical ancient Native American little person demon growing out of the back of a woman’s neck who fights the heroes in space with laser beams kind of flick. You know the type.

Independently produced, The Manitou was released by Avco Embassy in late April, with a June rollout across North America, and worldwide the following year.

In 1970, renowned auteur and wine lover Orson Welles began production on a film entitled The Other Side of the Wind about a legendary director who’d been in European exile for a number of years but had at last returned stateside to make his masterpiece, which bears the same name as this film. John Huston was cast as the director alongside such talents as Peter Bogdonovich, Susan Strasberg, Lili Palmer, Cameron Crowe, Dennis Hopper, Natalie Wood, and Edmond O’Brien. It was, naturally, meant to be Welles’ own comeback film, a send up of Hollywood, art, and the myriad struggles to unite the two. Shot mockumentary style over a six-year period, the film became more famous for its struggles, and even though principal photography was completed, financial and legal issues resulted in the negatives being impounded; Welles wouldn’t live to get them back.

In what can only be described as a major win for the digital streaming platform, the previously unfinished and unreleased final film by legendary filmmaker Orson Welles will finally reach audiences, courtesy of Netflix. The Other Side Of The Wind has languished in locked rooms in Paris for four decades, as a variety of producers have attempted to negotiate acceptable deals with the Welles Estate. Now, producer Filip Jan Rymsza (Sangue Azul) has succeeded, striking a deal that will see the completion of editing and a global Netflix release, as he explained to Wellesnet.

“Everything is signed. All the deals are fully closed, both the Netflix deal and all of the rights deals. Everything we have done for the past year and a half has been gruelling, but that’s finally over and now we get to be creative and finally bring this film to life.”

The Other Side Of The Wind...

Blame The Bad Seed (1956) for every murderous moppet that has skipped across the screen in subsequent years. Village of the Damned, The Omen, The Good Son, The Children, and many more have explored the taboo of killer kiddies. One of the oddest of the bunch is Ed Hunt’s Bloody Birthday (1981), a ridiculously fun turn with not just one, but three mini-Mansons on hand to clean up the schoolyard.

Well, that’s a bit of a misnomer, as our rascally trio tends to focus on grown ups, what with their stupid rules against homicide and premature burial. (Don’t worry – one of the protagonists is a classmate who is put in mortal danger. All’s fair.) Bloody Birthday was rolled out twice; first in limited release in April of ’81, and then in ’86 (also limited release). The film made its money back but didn’t earn any good grace from critics...

The biggest remaining treasure trove in the world of cinema is the long lost and destroyed ending to Orson Welles‘ The Magnificent Ambersons, his cynical director’s cut that he felt would’ve made it an even greater film than Citizen Kane. In 2015, Royal Road Entertainment will release Welles’s last film The Other Side of the Wind in accordance with Welles’s 100th birthday. The New York Times reported Wednesday how Welles spent the last 15 years of his life shooting and editing the picture, a meta story about an aging, legendary director played by John Huston.
