This article contains discussions of "Fantastic Four: First Steps."
Matt Shakman's new film "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" marks the fifth time that the title characters have been brought to the big screen in live action. The previous iteration in 2015, directed by Josh Trank, was widely disliked by both critics and audiences, as its tone was unnecessarily dour, and its storytelling was borderline incompetent. Its drastic alterations from the original "Fantastic Four" lore aren't as grievous a sin as its general lack of quality. Before that, Tim Story directed a pair of "Fantastic Four" movies in 2005 and 2007, and those were disarmingly corny, but also a little drab; there wasn't a lot of superhero fantasy action that the Ff's fans longed for.

The Hollywood premiere of The Fantastic Four: First Steps was a real family affair... and not just for the cast members playing Marvel Comics' First Family in the new Marvel Studios blockbuster.
While the current super-quartet of of Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bacharach were present and accounted for, an earlier version of the Ff also walked the blue carpet. Thanks to First Steps director Matt Shakman, the lead performers from legendary producer Roger Corman's ill-fated 1994 adaptation were on the guest list.
That famously never-released movie starred Alex Hyde-White and Rebecca Staab as team leaders Reed and Sue Richards aka Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman (now played by Pascal and Kirby), Jay Underwood as Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch (now played by Quinn), and Michael Bailey-Smith as Ben Grimm aka The Thing (now played by Moss-Bacharach). All those actors also make cameos in First Steps.

After chasing the elusive, once-upon-a-time success of the MCU for the past 6 years, Kevin Feige ultimately found it with Marvel’s first family. The franchise has now hit the golden pot at the end of the rainbow with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which takes a step back from the current timeline to travel back to the retrofuturistic past of the 1960s.
Meanwhile, Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby‘s blockbuster success comes at the tail end of a long, rocky, and often backbreaking odyssey at 20th Century Fox with the Fantastic Four property. Despite the studio’s unrelenting attempt to reboot the franchise, F4 has always managed to bomb at the box office, each time somehow worse than the last.
Below is a list of every Fantastic Four movie ever made, ranked in order of their runtime, from shortest to longest.

In the history of The Fantastic Four on screen, there is one iteration of Marvel’s First Family that has been incredibly hard done by over the last 30 years. While everyone remembers the disaster that was the 2015 movie, and the “of-the-time” successful venture a decade earlier, Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps is giving the stars of the long-lost Roger Corman-produced version a moment in the spotlight thanks to some very deep-cut cameos in a newly released clip.
As seen in the newly released clip featuring five minutes of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the stars of that movie, Alex Hyde-White (Reed Richards), Jay Underwood (Johnny Storm), Michael Bailey Smith (Ben Grimm), and Rebecca Staab (Sue Storm), all make small appearances, which is surely a Galactus-sized thing for the four stars after the many years since they played the first on-screen iteration of the main cast.

Following last night's world premiere in Los Angeles, Marvel Studios has released a 5-minute clip from The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Taken from the beginning of the movie, some edits have been made, but it still offers a fun idea of what's to come later this week.
The team's origin story is recounted, and we get to see Mister Fantastic squaring off with the Red Ghost's Super-Apes...despite John Malkovich's Russian villain being left on the cutting room floor.
Each member of the team is shown protecting New York, while Reed Richards is found hosting "Fantastic Science with Mr. Fantastic" to a group of very uninterested children. The Thing also says "It's Clobberin' Time," albeit in cartoon form.
Finally, keep your eyes peeled, as when all those New Yorkers express gratitude for Marvel's First Family, you'll see Alex Hyde-White, Rebecca Staab, Jay Underwood, and Michael Bailey Smith make a cameo appearance.

There’s a Marvel movie out there most people have never seen — the 1994 Fantastic Four film produced by Roger Corman. It was made in Germany, shot in English, and tells the story of how the superhero team got their powers and fought their first big villain, Doctor Doom. But the movie was never officially released.
This film was mostly created so producer Bernd Eichinger could keep the rights to the Fantastic Four characters. Even though it wasn’t shown in theaters, pirated copies of the movie have been floating around since the mid-90s, and clips have popped up online from time to time.
Recently, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige teased something exciting. He said the main actors from that lost 1994 Fantastic Four movie will actually appear in the new MCU Fantastic Four film in small cameo roles.
This is a cool nod to the old movie that never saw the light of day.

There’s a very strange chapter in Marvel’s history that most people don’t know about: a Fantastic Four movie made in the early 1990s that was never officially released.
This English-language German film was produced on a shoestring budget and was executive-produced by Roger Corman, known for low-budget movies, and Bernd Eichinger. The main reason for making the movie wasn’t to hit theaters but to keep the film rights to the Fantastic Four characters.
The story followed the classic origin of the team, showing how Reed Richards, Susan Storm, Johnny Storm, Ben Grimm, and Victor Von Doom got their powers and first clashed. Reed and Victor started as college friends trying an experiment involving a comet called Colossus, but things go wrong.
After a crash landing, they gain superpowers: Reed can stretch his body, Susan can turn invisible, Johnny controls fire, and Ben’s skin becomes like stone.

Roger Corman’s Fantastic Four movie was completed in 1994 but never saw an official release in theaters or on home video.
Produced on a shoestring budget of about $1 million by Bernd Eichinger (via Constantin Film) and Roger Corman, the film was reportedly made solely to retain the screen rights to the Fantastic Four characters before they expired.
After Marvel struck a new deal with 20th Century Fox to develop a big-budget adaptation, the studio allegedly paid to shelve the original film permanently.
Today, you can find trailers and footage from the film on YouTube if you're curious about just how low-budget and campy the film truly is.
Still, bootleg copies have circulated for decades, earning the film cult status among fans. Its strange history and underground fame were later explored in the documentary Doomed! The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s The Fantastic Four.

Should you need a Fantastic Four fix before the release of the latest reboot of the comic IP, you are in luck. No, we're not talking about the 2015 Josh Trank reboot, nor the 2005 one with Chris Evans. Scheduled for a US premiere on January 19, 1994, the pre-Disney The Fantastic Four was a collaborative effort between legendary filmmaker Roger Corman and Marvel Comics icon Stan Lee. Biding their time, Marvel was launching a suite of franchises just as their rivals DC had. Starring unknowns, packed with janky special effects, and directed by Oley Sassone, a music video director, this project was about as far from Marvel Phase Five as you can get. It's not streaming anywhere. And never will.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe will feature a brand-new team as the first family in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The cast will also include Stranger Things' Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, who has given a cheeky response about his preparation for the role.
The McU's first family will consist of Quinn, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/ Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/ The Invisible Woman, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/ The Thing. The excitement for the new reboot is high, especially as it had been long in the making and the previous three attempts at adapting the comments weren't so successful. Set to premiere on July 25, 2025, Joseph Quinn told L'Officiel USA how he prepares for the role.

Three decades ago, Marvel tried to bury their most infamous film, and to this day, the 1994 live-action adaptation of The Fantastic Four has yet to be released to the public. Thanks to bootleg versions of the film available online, however, it enjoys a dedicated fan base, who consider it a decent (though low-budget) adaptation of the iconic comic book. Those fans include David Lowery, the director of The Green Knight and A Ghost Story, who holds it in higher regard than the big-budget adaptations that came afterward.
Lowery recently appeared in an episode of the "Kim's Video" series on the Alamo Drafthouse YouTube channel, with the theater chain recreating Kim's Video, the iconic New York City movie rental shop, in the lobby of their Downtown Manhattan theater. Warning: This article contains spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is highly anticipated, following the demise of other versions of the superhero team. Deadpool & Wolverine marked the end of Chris Evans' Johnny Storm, paving the way for Joseph Quinn's portrayal in the MCU. Filming of The Fantastic Four: First Steps began soon after Deadpool & Wolverine's release, setting the stage for a new era of the First Family.
The McU's The Fantastic Four: First Steps is one of the most hotly anticipated movies on its release slate, but Marvel made sure first to kill off Fox's Fantastic Four just before filming started. The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be the third live-action iteration of the team to make it to the big screen. Pressure is mounting for Marvel to do its First Family justice as the last two Fantastic Four movies failed to inspire much confidence.

Doctor Doom is one of Marvel's most iconic, recognizable and beloved supervillains. Doctor Doom has been played by three previous actors in live-action, and will soon be played by a fourth in the MCU. Joseph Culp, Julian McMahon and Toby Kebbell have all played Doctor Doom, while Robert Downey Jr. has been cast as the McU's Doctor Doom.
As one of Marvel's most iconic supervillains, Doctor Doom is a very coveted live-action role that has been taken on by only a handful of actors, and he will soon be joining the MCU. First seen in Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four #5 back in 1962, Victor Von Doom is one of Marvel's longest-running, most persistent and most dangerous villains. He has been featured as the archenemy of Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four for decades, but he has also taken on the likes of Doctor Strange, Iron Man, the Black Panther, and the X-Men.

Marvel’s Fantastic Four has lived through several iterations. In 1994, the first ambitious Fantastic Four life-action was made starring Alex Hyde-White, Rebecca Staab, and Jay Underwood, with Joseph Culp playing Doctor Doom. However, the movie was never released. While the Chris Evans-starrer Fantastic Four movie series was popular among fans, there was an attempt from Fox to reboot the franchise in 2015 with a roster of a talented cast.

The Hollywood formula of throwing A-list actors in with top directors and writers doesn't always pay off at the box office and has resulted in some of the most colossal flops in cinema history. The right time to kill a potential stinker is in the pre-production phase, but sometimes awful movies get made before the studio realizes they have a very expensive bomb on their hands.
With the kind of money it takes to make a film, studios will release a movie they know is bad in hopes of recouping the investment, but sometimes it makes better business sense to sit on it and take the tax write-off. There have been some big-time movies, with marquee stars and named directors, that were completed, but for a variety of reasons, never released.

Original Doctor Doom actor Joseph Culp calls for release of 1994 Fantastic Four film, sparking fan interest after decades of mystery. The film, made on a $1 million budget, was never intended for public release, according to co-creator Stan Lee and producer Bernd Eichinger. Marvel Studios founder Avi Arad reportedly acquired rights to 1994 film and ordered its destruction to protect Fantastic Four's reputation.
Joseph Culp, who portrayed Doctor Doom in the unreleased 1994 film The Fantastic Four, has voiced his desire for the film to finally be unveiled to the public, three decades after its intended release.
This plea came in response to a video shared by Twitter user @GodzillaMendoza, which delved into the film's tumultuous history. Culp expressed his appreciation for the video, calling it a "wonderful exposé" and suggesting that the time has come to reveal "the truth about the film" on the 30th anniversary of its original release date,...

There are few Marvel characters that have played as essential a role in the comic publisher’s history as the Fantastic Four. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Marvel’s “first family” debuted in the comics in 1961, and they were instrumental in bringing comic books and superheroes into a new era following the Golden Age of the ‘40s and ‘50s. The team has consisted of many different characters over the years, but the core four characters have always been Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Sue Storm/the Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/the Human Torch, and Ben Brimm/the Thing.
There have been a handful of attempts to bring the Fantastic Four to the big screen over the years, but those endeavors have proven to be notoriously difficult. The newest version of the team will exist within the confines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has been dominating multiplexes for 15 years now.

As the cast of the next Fantastic Four movie comes together, a variety of new casting reports have been emerging in recent days, and among them was the latest rumor that Jack Quaid might play Johnny Storm... but that's apparently not the case.
The reported casting stemmed from The Hot Mic podcast with movie scoopers Jeff Sneider and John Rocha. It was claimed that Quaid, one of the stars of the hit Prime Video series The Boys, was expected to soon be announced for the role of Johnny Storm. It was also reported during the same podcast that Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One) had signed on to play Sue Storm, Johnny's sister. However, Quaid now says with a post on X that the report about his casting isn't accurate. Encouraging fans to donate to the SAG-AFTRA fund, the actor wrote, "Hello everyone. Nope. Not playing Johnny Storm but hey I'm flattered.

Film fans love to speculate on what canceled movie productions would have become. What would it have been like to see Steven Spielberg's science fiction epic "Robopocalypse," Quentin Tarantino's Vega Brothers movie, Stanley Kubrick's ambitious "Napoleon" biopic, or Alejandro Jodorowsky's "Dune" adaptation? Would they be everything fans imagined them to be? Or crushing disappointments? While it's fun to speculate, we can't put our faith into something that doesn't exist. Likely, these films wouldn't have lived up to fans' massive expectations.

Marvel's "First Family" has had a rocky road to the big screen. Although the characters of Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm have delighted Marvel comic book fans for generations, the "Fantastic Four" has never received the cinematic adaptation that they deserve. Unfortunately, these great characters have never been properly utilized. The "Fantastic Four" comics show what it's like to balance superhero responsibilities with familial duties.
Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing were brought to life in 1994's "The Fantastic Four," a low-budget film that never received a theatrical release. It wasn't until 2005 that they made it to the big screen when Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis were cast in Tim Story's "Fantastic Four." When Warner Bros. Discovery announced its much-anticipated Batgirl movie would be shelved, the news sent shockwaves through Hollywood. While the studio eventually expressed concerns the work done by directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah failed to live up to “spectacle that audiences have come to expect from DC fare,” the final decision to leave the film unreleased, despite reportedly having spent upwards of 90 million on it, felt unprecedented in the ever-expanding age of superhero movies.
It was heartbreaking on multiple levels. Adil & Bilall had already proven themselves adept big budget filmmakers on the brilliant Bad Boys for Life while the eye-catching cast included J.K. Simmons getting another go as Commissioner Gordon, Brendan Fraser continuing the “Franaissance” as villain Firefly, and Michael Keaton donning the Batsuit for the first time in nearly two decades. Perhaps the most famously bad Marvel movie in history is now available to watch in its entirety online. In 1994, a low-budget The Fantastic Four movie was completed, but never released and has existed in infamy ever since. In an era long before the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and even a few years before Blade would help establish Marvel as a brand that could do business at the box office, this cheap monstrosity happened. And now, those brave enough can view it for themselves.
For those who don't know about the history of this movie, it's pretty fascinating. In 1983, the rights to the Fantastic Four were purchased by Bernd Eichinger and his Neue Constantin production company. After a full decade, no big-budget movie materialized and, if they didn't make something, the rights were going to revert back to Marvel. So, Eichinger recruited Roger Corman, a legendary producer famous for turning profits on micro-budget features,...

Only two weeks have passed since Marvel welcomed the arrival of the first Avengers: Infinity War teaser and already, Joe and Anthony Russo’s starry tentpole has racked up a staggering 100 million views on YouTube.
That number continues to climb at an exponential rate, so it’s small wonder why Infinity War now holds the title as the most-watched trailer debut of all time within 24 hours. But YouTube content creator and all-around video wizard Darth Blender has produced a decidedly different take on the Avengers: Infinity War trailer.
Much like Darth Blender’s videos for Justice League, Injustice II and Spider-Man: Homecoming, this latest sizzle reel (see below) gives Infinity War the retro treatment, and is edited in such a way that Reb Brown and Burt Reynolds take point as Iron Man and Captain America.

Next fall, Mark Ruffalo's beloved Hulk character will finally return in Thor: Ragnarok, after skipping this summer's Captain America: Civil War. The actor made his Marvel debut as Hulk in 2012's The Avengers, but nearly 20 years prior, the actor almost portrayed another iconic Marvel character, long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was even formed. A new documentary reveals that the Oscar-nominated actor almost played the nefarious Doctor Doom, although not in the movie you may think.
Yahoo! Movies reports that in the new documentary Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman's The Fantastic Four, Mark Ruffalo auditioned for the Doctor Doom role, which he ultimately lost to Joseph Culp. The documentary also reveals that other well-known actors who were turned down for the movie includes Xena's Rene O'Connor Lost star Titus Welliver and Seinfeld's Patrick Warburton. Last year, 20th Century Fox released a “Fantastic Four” reboot directed by Josh Trank. Starring Miles Teller (“Whiplash”), Michael B. Jordan (“Creed”), Kate Mara (“The Martian”), Jamie Bell (“Snowpiercer”), the film was a critical and commercial disaster. The reboot tried to jumpstart the franchise after the original 2005 series underperformed with its 2007 sequel. But in 1994, Bernd Eichinger of Constantin Film and director Roger Corman teamed up to make their own “Fantastic Four” film that never saw the light of day.

Back before Hollywood studios like Warner Bros., Sony, Paramount, Universal and 20th Century Fox realized that you could actually make money off of adapting silly comic books into movies, there was a German producer by the name of Bernd Eichinger. He had the vision to see that comic books could become blockbusters and had his company purchase the film rights to the Fantastic Four from Stan Lee. One issue, his company didn't have the money to actually make a big-budget Hollywood film. So, in order to keep the film rights his company hired Roger Corman to produce it, as he was well known for making films on the cheap. Short on options, Uncle Buck – a sloppy and crass city dweller – is recruited at the last minute.
