Blade Runner (1982) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
It’s funny how some of the most important and beloved movies of all time can come from stories that aren’t quite as celebrated or well read, and I’m not just talking about movies from 1982. The Thing certainly falls under that category because while Who Goes There is certifiably a great sci-fi story and there have been at least 3 movies based on it, The Thing and John Carpenter will live on far longer than Who Goes There and John W. Campbell. While that certainly doesn’t extend to all famous authors, Stephen King’s name is etched into history and 75% of his adaptations will either be forgotten or redone multiple times over, there’s also that middle ground. Phillip K. Dick has more than his fair share of adaptations out there, but his adaptations typically turn out higher profile than the author or his original works. Blade Runner...

10 Best Movies Set In Kansas, Ranked
Image
"Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore," Dorothy famously stated in a movie quote considered the fourth greatest ever by the American Film Institute. No, Dorothy, you're not -- you're in Hollywood! With a population just shy of three million, the entire state of Kansas has less residents than New York City and Los Angeles, while it's just a hair above Chicago. Yet when it comes to the movies, "The Wheat State" punches far above its weight, with cinematic representation including Academy Award winners, blockbusters, and even films that have joined the hallowed ranks of the National Film Registry. What gives?

Perhaps it's because filmmakers consider the 34th state the perfect great plains state, with its waving wheat fields and endless horizons. More than anything, maybe it's the welcoming Kansas culture of "midwest nice" that has never met a stranger. Whatever the reason, "The Sunflower State" has proven...

Green and Gold Review: When Football, Family, and Farming Collide
Image
Green and Gold explores resilience through a story set on a Wisconsin dairy farm in 1993. Buck Strom (Craig T. Nelson), a determined farmer struggling against economic challenges, faces potential foreclosure. He makes an unlikely bet on the Green Bay Packers—a wager that transcends financial concerns and speaks to resistance against change.

The story examines complex ideas: What defines the value of tradition? How can one respect history without becoming trapped by it? Director Anders Lindwall presents these reflections with genuine emotional depth.

Lindwall crafts his feature debut with restrained skill, allowing visual landscapes to communicate as powerfully as dialogue. Cinematography captures rural Wisconsin in warm, golden tones, transforming the setting into an almost mythical space where determination might reshape destiny.

Nelson delivers a nuanced performance, capturing Buck’s complex character with remarkable subtlety. Madison Lawlor’s character Jenny, conflicted between agricultural roots and musical aspirations, creates emotional tension. M. Emmet Walsh...

'Green and Gold' Review: Faith, Family & Football
Image
Green and Gold warms your soul with an inspirational true story of Midwestern fellowship, unbreakable family bonds, and die-hard fans of the Green Bay Packers. The venerable Craig T. Nelson stars as Buck Strom, an old-school Wisconsin dairy farmer struggling to make ends meet in the early '90s. He's up to his eyeballs in debt with greedy bankers circling like vultures. This hard luck tale isn't a fantasy or uncommon occurrence. The working poor who fill our fridges and dinner tables are often the first casualties of economic insecurity. But Buck and his community are resilient people. They're not easily pushed around with a steadfast faith in God, each other, and of course, football.

Green and Gold is seen from the perspective of Jenny (Madison Lawlor), Buck's beautiful and talented granddaughter. She's up early every morning with Buck and Grandma Margaret (Annabel Armour) tending to their cows. Buck has...

‘No Other Land’, Oscar Nominated Documentary By Palestinian-Israeli Collective, Debuts At Film Forum – Specialty Preview
Image
No Other Land, Academy Award-nominated for Best Documentary Feature, opens today in New York at Film Forum from mTuckman Media/Cinetic Media with a limited theatrical expansion next weekend.

The doc is written, directed, produced and edited by a collective of Palestinian and Israeli activists and filmmakers — Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor. It premiered at Berlin, winning Best Documentary, followed by a widely decorated festival sweep. It sits at 100% with Critics on Rotten Tomatoes (57 reviews). Deadline’s Matthew Carey interviews the filmmakers here.

The release started circulating against the backdrop of the brutal Israel-Hamas war, currently in a period of ceasefire. It predates the war but explores root causes of enmity as the filmmakers chronicle the Israeli military’s incremental expulsion of the West Bank community of Masafer Yatta — home to 20 ancient Palestinian villages.

Over a period of five years (2019–23), Masafer Yatta resident and Palestinian...

All 18 Keanu Reeves Movies From The 1990s, Ranked
Image
Keanu Reeves has been acting since the 1980s, and has given the world great performances in the realm of action, adventure, drama, and even comedy. It's rare for someone whose most prolific catchphrase is "Whoah" to be able to show so much emotional depth in a wide range of roles. Reeves is known not to take himself too seriously while still being able to take on very serious roles.

The 1990s were a very rich decade for Keanu Reeves' best films, which saw him star in action-packed blockbusters like Speed, emotional indie films like My Own Private Idaho, and ensemble pieces like Bram Stoker's Dracula. His star was on the rise throughout that tumultuous time of growth, and he's been an unwavering part of pop culture ever since. While Reeves has a very stoic approach to acting, with some criticizing his limited range, it's that brooding calmness that makes...

'Hundreds of Beavers' Is the Best 2024 Comedy & Is Free to Stream
Image
There were a lot of funny movies in 2024, but most of them weren't what we'd call 'comedies.' There were funny action movies, funny dramas, funny horror movies, funny thrillers, and so on, but not many straight-up comedies. One film, however, embraced the very roots of comedy, combining silent slapstick with very early animated comedy to great effect, and it's now free to watch basically everywhere. That would be the absurdist, utterly wacky delight, Hundreds of Beavers.

Hundreds of Beavers is co-written by its lead star Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, who gives one of the best physical performances in years. It's a good thing he was a co-writer, because most actors wouldn't do what he's subjected to in director Mike Cheslik's film. The movie is a microbudget passion project made for $150,000 over the course of many years; actual filming took place in the subzero winters of Wisconsin and Michigan...

Amazon's 'Blade Runner 2099' Starring Michelle Yeoh Finishes Production
Image
The Blade Runner franchise received a long-awaited sequel in 2017 from Denis Villeneuve, and although it was hailed by many as another masterpiece, the film failed to make a splash at the box office. Since then, another big-screen installment has been out of the conversation, but audiences will be re-entering the futuristic neo-noir world soon enough. Amazon is currently developing Blade Runner 2099, a television series starring Michelle Yeoh that will serve as the latest sequel to Ridley Scott's original 1982 classic.

According to Discussing Film, Blade Runner 2099 has officially wrapped production, which took place in the Czech Republic. Alongside the 2023 Best Actress Oscar winner, Euphoria star Hunter Schafer is set as the co-lead for the upcoming Blade Runner sequel. Due to the union strikes in 2023, the show's production was delayed several times before finally finishing filming late this year. As one could assume, plot details have remained scarce at best,...

10 Sci-Fi Movies Where The Bad Guy Was Right
Image
Many factors are involved in crafting a compelling villain for a science fiction movie. After all, the bad guys often tend to be just as captivating than the heroes. Of course, one key element in designing a proper villain is giving them a purpose; a clear goal for them to be trying to achieve, particularly one that directly combats the objectives of the hero. Every so often, a film takes this idea so far as to include an antagonist who, when you think about it, actually has a very valid reason for doing what they do.

This is not to say that all of their actions are completely defensible; many villains are given that title because of the violent/excessive methods they use to achieve their goals. However, at the end of the day, it is difficult to deny that they did have understandable motivations. Having ideas that the viewers...

'She Destroyed Me': Ridley Scott Says 1 Critic Shattered Blade Runner's Box Office Prospects
Image
Ridley Scott's earliest films are now cult classics, but only Alien was a breakout hit when it was released in theaters. Scott reflected on Blade Runner's fumble at the box office.

Ridley Scott said Blade Runner and Alien would have been equally successful if not for one film critic's scathing feedback. "She destroyed me," he told Entertainment Weekly, referring to Pauline Kael, The New Yorker's legendary film critic who "destroyed Blade Runner in four pages."

"I didn't even meet her," he added. "To me, it almost walked in the column of industrial espionage, because you're destroying a product before it's out." Scott confirmed he had those four pages framed and mounted in his office, as his constant reminder not to read and believe his own press.

10 Best Comedy Movies From the 1970s, Ranked
Image
During the 1970s, American cinema was in the midst of the New Hollywood movement. When the Production Code officially lost all its power in the late 1960s, American films no longer had to abide by the oppressive and restrictive rules that had been in place for the past three decades. The Production Code's dismantling led to an explosion of creativity, particularly in the comedy genre.

In today's cultural climate, comedies do not typically receive the same level of adulation as dramas. However, throughout the 1970s, comedies ranked among Hollywood's most acclaimed genres. Comedies such as M*A*S*H, The Sting, American Graffiti, and Annie Hall each garnered Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, with The Sting and Annie Hall both winning the Oscar's top prize. Filmmakers like Woody Allen, Hal Ashby, and Mel Brooks reigned supreme as some of the best comedy directors working in the United States during the 1970s.

'There's A Twisted Exuberance': Brothers Director Dishes on the Wild Movie
Image
The Prime Video movie Brothers has been catching audiences by surprise. Not many film fans expected Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage to be starring in a comedy together. And nobody expected the movie to be as off-the-wall bonkers as it is. Even by the standards set by other stories about dysfunctional families, this one is different.

So how did it come together? To get more insight on the movie, Cbr spoke to Brothers director Max Barbakow, who's best known for another trippy film called Palm Springs. Josh Brolin Fondly Remembers M. Emmet Walsh

The new Prime Video film Brothers is a cavalcade of famous faces having a great time with a raunchy, wacky comedy that has no pretense of seriousness. Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage headline the film as twin brothers plotting a crime after one is released from prison, but the film also has hilarious turns from Brendan Fraser, Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei, Jennifer Landon, and the late, great M. Prime Video's Brothers is not the movie fans expect Josh Brolin or Peter Dinklage to make. The two actors are very much known for their serious roles in some of the biggest films and TV of all time. Brendan Fraser's Performance in Brothers Is His Funniest in 30 Years
Image
Quick Links Brendan Fraser Has Always Been an Underrated Comedic Actor Brendan Fraser Gives His Best Comedic Performance Yet in Prime's Brothers

Brendan Fraser has had a fascinating and, at times, tragic career trajectory since his first feature film appearance in 1992's Encino Man. Brendan Fraser thrived in the '90s and was looking to become a big star, appearing in fan-pleasing comedies such as Airheads (1994) and action films like The Mummy (1999). However, the 2000s and 2010s saw significant challenges for the actor on both a personal and professional level, with many of his movies falling short of expectations, health issues, and blacklisting after being sexually assaulted (People).

Despite Fraser's problems within the industry and personal struggles, the actor has since seen a resurgence in popularity. This was brought on by his innate skills as a performer, yet his charms as a person have certainly gone a long way...

‘Brothers’ Review: Josh Brolin And Peter Dinklage Play Fraternal Twins (!) In Raucous And Hilarious Action Comedy
Peter Farrelly
Amazon Prime has lately shown a penchant for the kind of wacky action comedies studios aren’t flooding theatres with like they used to do. With films by Peter Farrelly, Paul Feig and others, the genre is alive and well in Culver City, and its acquisition of Palm Springs director Max Barbakow’s sophomore feature Brothers not only fits right into the mold but also manages to be a wildly entertaining example of how to do it.

What also makes this all work as well as it does is an exceptionally well-chosen cast of A-list actors working against type. What more do I have to say except that Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage are playing fraternal twins and Glenn Close is their conniving grifter mother! Throw in a X-rated love scene with a CGI orangutan and you have the recipe for madness, which Brothers delivers in the best slapstick style.

Crime comedy Brothers strains for wacky, achieves hacky
Image
With its bland title, generic logline, and overqualified cast, the crime comedy Brothers seems made for the streaming-content junkyard—the eternal limbo of the if-you-liked recommendation queue. For director Max Barbakow, who made a promising debut with the fantasy rom-com Palm Springs, it’s a definite step down: Whereas the...

Brothers Review: Josh Brolin & Peter Dinklage's Inferior Twins Riff Is Frustratingly Dull
Image
It should be impossible to look at Brothers and not make a parallel with Ivan Reitman's Twins (1988), because of the differences between its lead actors, Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin. But there are far more similarities than that: there's criminality, a debt-chasing villain, sharp flashes of violence, and a road trip to reconnect with an absent mother. There's also the actual difference between the brothers: who they are inside.

The subtlety of Reitman's Twins was not in mining the comedy potential of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito's physical appearances as much as their different backgrounds. Mercifully, Brothers follows a similar trend, avoiding making cheap jokes to explore the sensibility clash between the delightfully named Jady (Dinklage) and Moke (Brolin). That shouldn't really come as a surprise to anyone who saw Barbakow's Palm Springs (itself incessantly likened to Groundhog Day).

Brothers 2024 Ending Explained
Image
The ending of Prime Video's Brothers sees everything work out for Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin's twin characters, though perhaps not in the way they expected. The crime comedy film follows Jady (Dinklage) and Moke (Brolin), twin brothers who have been partners in crime since childhood. However, by their 40s, Moke had started over clean while Jady was sent to prison. The latter twin ultimately gets a chance at a fresh start himself after making a deal with the corrupt Judge Farful (M. Emmet Walsh) to retrieve some emeralds their mom Cath (Glenn Close) dumped 30 years previous.

Jady gets Moke wrapped up in this final crime, but they can't pull it off without their unapologetic deadbeat mom. With Judge Farful's son (played in Brothers by Brendan Fraser) close on their tail, the family trio hit the road, infiltrate a country club, dig up a body, and retrieve the emeralds.

Brothers 2 Gets Enthusiastic Response From Director Who Teases An "Ocean's 11 Style" Heist
Image
Brothers 2 receives an enthusiastic response from director Max Barbakow who teases an "Ocean's 11 style" heist. The new action-comedy follows a reformed criminal, now living a quiet life with his wife, who is pulled back into a dangerous heist when his reckless twin brother convinces him to join a cross-country mission, forcing them to navigate gunfights, legal trouble, and family tensions as they struggle to repair their fractured relationship before it leads to their undoing. Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage lead the Brothers cast alongside Taylour Paige, Glenn Close, Brendan Fraser, M. Emmet Walsh, and Jennifer Landon.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Max Barbakow shared an enthusiastic response to the idea of Brothers 2. The director expressed enthusiasm for a potential sequel, noting that there are many unexplored characters and stories in the film's universe. He suggests the sequel could focus on a larger, more ambitious heist, drawing inspiration...

Brothers 2024 Cast & Character Guide
Image
Prime Video's crime comedy Brothers is outrageous and hilarious, with a star-studded cast to pull of the wild plot. The film, which takes inspiration from the 1988 Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito comedy Twins, sees Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin team up as a conflicted criminal duo, joined up by their irresponsible and unapologetic mother, played by the iconic Glenn Close. To make matters even better, the leading cast of Brothers is joined by notable names like Brendan Fraser, M. Emmet Walsh, Taylour Paige, and Marisa Tomei.

Brothers see convicted felon Jady Munger (Peter Dinklage) cut a deal with the corrupt Judge Farful (M. Emmet Walsh) to get out of jail free, so long as he produces some valuable stolen emeralds. To pull this off and live his life free and clear, Jady must team up with his brother Moke (Josh Brolin), who has done his best to move on from the family life of crime.

‘Brothers’ Review: Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage Play Estranged Twins in Amazon’s Erratic Crime Caper
Image
The increasing predominance of streaming content over theatrical releasing continues apace with Brothers, a Legendary Entertainment production that distributor Amazon MGM Studios dropped into a handful of theaters for a week without critics’ screenings, ahead of its Oct. 17 debut on Prime. That strategy will likely turn out to be fortuitous for a mildly amusing feature that lacks the heft to compete at the early awards-season box office, leaving the film to find a less-committed audience in the streaming-verse.

Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage play mismatched siblings with heavy jaws (enhanced in Dinklage’s case by a handlebar mustache) in Max Barbakow’s second feature, which finds him trading the subtler comic shadings of Palm Springs for ham-fisted humor, to disappointingly diminishing effect.

A brief setup introduces career criminal Jady Munger (Dinklage), who manages to lop a substantial chunk off his prison sentence for burglary and assault after cutting a secret...

Why Warner Bros. Chose to Market Wild Wild West Over The Iron Giant
Image
Quick Links Wild Wild West Could've Been a Good Film Will Smith Is Not a Fan of Wild Wild West

If there's a truly misguided late '90s blockbuster, it's not Godzilla, which was blatantly more inspired by Jurassic Park than the Big G. It'd be Wild Wild West, with an ultra-hammy antagonist performance by Kenneth Branagh, zero chemistry between the leads, and attempts at condemning racism that come across as, well, racist. And that's when the movie isn't being blatantly sexist.

Oh, and then there's the giant metal spider, which producer Jon Peters had been desperately trying to get into a movie for years, including a Superman movie. In the end, it's as if the rights to an old IP were purchased on the cheap just to work a big metal spider into the narrative somehow. It's just one of the many baffling and wrongheaded decisions that went into crafting this $170 million dud.

‘Brothers’ Review: Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin Play Mismatched Twins in a Comedy Blind to Their Differences
Image
In “Brothers,” Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage play adult twins who’ve been criminal accomplices ever since their jewelry-heisting mom abandoned them as kids.

You hear the pitch for director Max Barbakow’s follow-up to his 2020 Sundance phenom “Palm Springs” and brace yourself for the possibility that the two actors’ mismatched appearances will be the source of the laughs. Screenwriters Macon Blair (“The Toxic Avenger”) and Etan Cohen ( “Tropic Thunder”) have credits that suggest as much, while Hollywood has a history of turning out “high-concept” comedies like “Stuck on You” and “Twins,” for those old enough to remember the ’80s flick in which Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito played long-separated (and far-from-identical) siblings.

It comes as a relief to find that the gap in stature between Moke (Brolin) and Jady (Dinklage) is not at all the difference that “Brothers” intends to focus on. Rather, it’s their mild-versus-wild personalities and...

Classic Trailer Rewatch: Brad Bird's Beloved 'The Iron Giant' Animation
Image
"You can fly?? You can fly!!" Time for yet another Classic Trailer Rewatch session. Back to the 90s again to revisit one of the best animated movies ever made. Back in 1999, Brad Bird directed a movie called The Iron Giant as his feature directorial debut. It didn't do so well at the box office, but that's okay, because it has gone on to become one of the most beloved, remembered, and celebrated animated movies of all-time. And if you haven't seen it, any day is a good day to watch this one – this post will be your reminder. From director Brad Bird – a young boy befriends a giant robot from outer space that a paranoid government agent wants to destroy. The movie features the voices of Eli Marienthal as Hogarth Hughes, Vin Diesel (yes for real!!) as The Iron Giant, Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Aniston, James Gammon, Cloris Leachman, and M. Emmet Walsh.

Upcoming Blade Runner Show Is Doing What Denis Villeneuves $267 Million Sequel Should Have
Image
The upcoming show Blade Runner 2099 is taking the approach to the world of replicants that Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 should have. Though there isn't much information about Blade Runner 2099 yet, what is publicly known about the Amazon Prime Video show is extremely promising. Michelle Yeoh landed the lead role in Blade Runner 2099, and Hunter Schafer was also cast in a currently unnamed role. Yeoh's character, Olwen, in particular, seems to hint that the story of Blade Runner 2099 will be intriguing as well, as Olwen has been described as a replicant at the end of her lifespan.

Aside from the fact that it's a show instead of a movie, there are a few ways Blade Runner 2099 already seems very different from Blade Runner 2049. Ridley Scott, the director of the original Blade Runner, and his production company, Scott Free, are helping to produce 2099. Denis...

Brothers Trailer: Josh Brolin And Peter Dinklage Are Criminal Brothers In New Action Comedy Movie
Image
Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage playing criminal twins in an action comedy from the director of Palm Springs, one of the funniest films of the decade, is a hell of an elevator pitch. And it's exactly what we're going to be getting with Max Barbakow's Amazon MGM Studios joint Brothers, a wackadoodle crime caper poured from The Toxic Avenger writer Macon Blair's pen and dreamt up by The Bad Guys' Etan Cohen. Throw in Glenn Close as the dastardly duo's deranged mother, Brendan Fraser as the screw loose crook tailing our anti-heroes across America, and Marisa Tomei singing "Suck on my balls!", and you've got all the makings of a real romp. Check out the quirky first trailer below:

Right from the get-go — in which a balaclava-clad Brendan Fraser yeets Dinklage's Jady at a wall and yells "Where are my emeralds?" — it's very clear that Good Time this ain't.
