Warning: This article contains multiple discussions of sexual assault.
I'll be honest: "The Lovely Bones," which gradually rolled out into theaters starting in late 2009 and had "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson at the helm, is a very tough watch — because it centers around the brutal sexual assault and murder of a young girl. So, is it based on a true story, like so many true crime projects these days?
It's not — "The Lovely Bones" is based on the first novel from writer Alice Sebold, which came out in 2002 and became an instant classic. With that in mind, it's unsurprising that a film adaptation eventually hit the big screen, but its path was far from straightforward. Initially, director Lynne Ramsay was attached to the project (with Sebold serving as an adviser for the movie), but things eventually changed and DreamWorks stepped in to back the project, at which point...

British actor and all-round decent chap Nicholas Hoult first appeared on my radar as War Boy Nux in "Mad Max: Fury Road," by which stage he had already started established a foothold in Hollywood by taking over as Beast in the "X-Men" series. Since then, he has developed into one of those actors who seems to be in every other movie, appearing in four high-profile films in 2024 and playing Lex Luthor as a psychotic tech bro in James Gunn's "Superman." Unlike Lex Luthor, Hoult has also used his fame for good causes, supporting numerous charities including Save the Children and the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Hoult started out performing in theater productions in the '90s aged just three years old. In 1996, he made his first screen appearance in "Intimate Relations" alongside Rupert Graves and Julie Walters and started popping up in popular British TV shows like BBC's "Casualty,...

Pinewood Toronto Studios is set to name one of its soundstages after Paul Bronfman, the Canadian industry pioneer who died in February at age 67.
Bronfman was a longtime chairman of Pinewood Toronto Studios, and before that a founding partner and a major shareholder in Filmport Studios, a production studio complex that opened in Toronto’s portlands in 2008. A year later, the facility was rebranded as Pinewood Toronto Studios, with Bronfman in the role of chairman and a key shareholder.
In 2023, Bronfman sold his minority stake to the Pinewood Group, the London-based studio group that runs Pinewood Studios in the U.K. and now owns all of the Toronto mega-studio.
“Pinewood Toronto Studios would not exist today, had it not been for Paul Bronfman’s personal and professional support throughout the years — first as an investor and our founding chairman, and following the sale of the business to Pinewood Group in...

There was a period when Jeremy Renner was on a winning streak. After landing a role in Kathryn Bigelow's award-winning war drama, "The Hurt Locker," he was appearing everywhere. Besides following it up with an impressive performance in the Ben Affleck-directed heist movie, "The Town," he then started switching between spy stories and superhero outings in three of the biggest franchises at that time.
After joining the Imf alongside Tom Cruise in "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" and drawing back his bow with Earth's Mightiest Heroes in "The Avengers," Renner dared to try and pick up the slack left by Matt Damon's amnesiac assassin, Jason Bourne, in the spin-off espionage thriller "The Bourne Legacy." While it received a lukewarm reception at the time and a so-so success at the box office, it feels that, even riding off of the "The Avengers," Renner's run in the Bourne-verse stands...

The adventure genre is one that has been thrilling audiences ever since the birth of the cinematic medium, from pulp literary adaptations to action-packed blockbusters filling theaters every summer. These stories are often set in exotic locales, with hardened protagonists on some sort of quest into the unknown. Compared to more conventional action movies, adventure films are about their environments as much as the high-octane thrills. And given the flexibility of the genre, adventure movies can bridge into fantasy, science fiction, and even horror on occasion.
What keeps the adventure genre consistent is a clear sense of escapism, imbuing its popcorn set pieces with a rousing sense of fun. Whether it's uncovering buried treasure or embarking on an epic voyage, that invigorating narrative sensibility remains front and center as adventure movies whisk their audiences away to parts unknown. "Thunderbolts*," with its stylish fight scenes and commentary on mental health, was a breath of fresh air for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. /Film's own Bj Colangelo praised the film as "the type of movie the MCU needs right now." It's kind of a minor miracle it works as well as it does since the central team is made up of C-listers, like Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) and Red Guardian (David Harbour), reprising their characters from 2021's "Black Widow." Seeing as how important that film is to Marvel's "Thunderbolts*," it's kind of surprising Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), Yelena's makeshift mother, is nowhere to be seen.

The Chain Reaction episode of What Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written and Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Narrated by Tyler Nichols, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
In the summer of 1996, Chain Reaction hit theaters with just about everything you’d want from a ’90s action thriller. Keanu Reeves was still riding high as the sympathetic action hero from Speed. Morgan Freeman brought his A-game and his signature weapon voice. Even director Andrew Davis was a hot commodity, fresh off directing The Fugitive, which had critics cheering and audiences running to theaters like they were being chased by Tommy Lee Jones. Throw in classic ‘90s plot elements like government conspiracy, corrupt suits, and a groundbreaking scientific discovery, and you’ve got popcorn gold. Or at least you should. The script went through many rewrites, which resulted in a frustrated cast. Filming took...

Tulsa King star Garrett Hedlund thinks his 2006 fantasy movie Eragon, which grossed $250 million, has seen its franchise potential wasted after 19 years without a sequel.
Dragons would later become all the rage thanks to Game of Thrones, but Disney’s Eragon got there first, bringing novelist Christopher Paolini’s telepathic firebreather Saphira to life, with plans to adapt the other books in Paolini’s series.
But Disney’s Eragon franchise plans were sadly derailed when the film met with bad reviews and lukewarm box office returns. 19 years later, those plans could be back on, as Disney+ is reported to be developing a series adaptation of Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle collection.
This should come as good news to Tulsa King star Hedlund, who recently reminisced about his experiences acting in Eragon, telling a panel at FanX’s Atlanta Comic Convention that he was hoping the film would spawn a franchise, and is...

‘Tulsa King’ Star, 44, Still Thinks His Underrated Fantasy Movie Deserved a Full Trilogy [Exclusive]
Over 20 years after its release, fans of Eragon are still waiting for the fantasy novel to get a proper adaptation. Progress on Disney+'s series has been slowly creeping along since its announcement back in 2022, and 20th Century Fox's 2006 film famously fell flat with brutal reviews and an underwhelming $250 million box office haul. One person who still laments how the big-screen take on Christopher Paolini's 2002 novel panned out is Garrett Hedlund, who embodied the antihero archer Murtaugh. The original plan was for a trilogy, capturing the sweeping epic of The Inheritance Cycle from the moment Eragon and his dragon Saphira first take flight to their final confrontation with the evil King Galbatorix. If it were up to the Tron: Legacy star, that franchise would've come to fruition given that it remains one of his most positive filmmaking experiences.

The 1999 film, The Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, and Oded Fehr is on both formal and informal lists of importance. The 26-year-old film is considered a classic for many millennials, even with it only sporting a 62% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans look past the 90s CGI and instead focus on the story and iconcism of Fraser and Weisz performances as Rick O'Connell and Evelyn Carnahan. Now, those same fans have allowed the film to join an important list on the social media platform, Letterboxd. According to a social media post, the film has now joined the One Million Watched Club. The list is as the name implies: it's been marked as "watched" by at least 1,000,000 Letterboxd users. The logline for The Mummy is as follows:

After almost three decades, Brendan Fraser has reunited with his former co-stars from his over $400 million blockbuster hit. As a recent Oscar winner whose career has seen a major resurgence following his Academy Award for Best Actor in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale in 2023, Fraser hasn’t lost sight of the roles that made him a star to begin with.

The 1999 cinematic classic, The Mummy, is an iconic piece of film — and for good reason. Everyone has their own logic behind what made the Stephen Sommers-helmed adventure flick such a hit, but up there at the top is certainly the performances carried out by its leading cast, which included Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, and Oded Fehr. The legends about what Fraser went through and what damage he did to his body in order to bring the blockbuster to screens could make a movie of their own. Now, thanks to one of his castmates, we have a better understanding of how things ended up that way for the actor.

Brendan Fraser credited The Mummy trilogy's success to its campy comedy, something that was all but scrapped in the 2017 reboot. Reflecting on his films' enduring legacy, the actor also weighed in on Universal's failed attempt at a shared universe of monster IPs.
The Mummy movies had mass appeal because they were swashbuckling comedies, Brendan Fraser told Collider. The actor referred to the first two films in the trilogy in particular: "With the exception of three [The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor], the thing with all of these films is that, at least it was fun, it was a thrill ride, and you wanted to do it again," he explained. Outside of the 2017 reboot, Universal's The Mummy films were all box office hits (including the 1932 original).

Over the course of three movies, Matt Damon brought Jason Bourne — a character first crafted by author Robert Ludlum — to life in a series of films that some know as The Bourne Trilogy. After unfurling the character’s mysterious spy background and sending him on numerous missions, the time eventually came to pass the baton, with Jeremy Renner picking up the torch and continuing the high-octane franchise in 2012’s The Bourne Legacy. Now, more than a full decade since the divisive film first crashed into cinemas, it’s receiving a boost of new life thanks to its streaming arrival on Paramount+. According to FlixPatrol, the Tony Gilroy-directed and co-penned production is clocking in on the Top 10 chart in numerous countries, including Bolivia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela, alongside other popular titles such as Gladiator II and Top Gun: Maverick.

It doesn't matter what you think about superhero movies; there's no denying that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is an incredible feat of storytelling and filmmaking prowess. The film franchise has produced some of the greatest action films of the past few years, including "Iron Man," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," and "Black Panther," though it's not uncommon to hear criticism of the MCU movies after "Avengers: Endgame," given the series' overarching struggle to recapture the magic of the Infinity Saga.
The MCU has, thus far, consisted of nearly 40 films (including 2025's "Thunderbolts*" and "The Fantastic Four: First Steps") and over 25 television series, so it's no surprise there's been a fair share of projects that haven't exactly resonated with audiences. While some of these films deserve more praise in the public eye, there are still good scenes, even those found amid the more unpopular moments in the MCU franchise.

Jude Law is one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood, who has spread his roots through every genre that exists. From giving standalone blockbusters with films like Hugo, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Closer to working in franchises like Sherlock Holmes, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now Harry Potter, clearly, he’s been part of everything grand.
Surprisingly, his best film is a 2007 underrated masterpiece, My Blueberry Nights, by the critically acclaimed director Wong Kar-wai. The film is so overlooked that chances are even the most ardent film connoisseurs have not heard about it. However, being on the sidelines doesn’t make it dismissible because it features a gentle story wrapped around the chaotic life of the metropolis.

With early reviews and test screenings, James Gunn’s Superman is looking to be pretty darn impressive, and I do love almost everything that the movie has to offer (almost everything).
However, it was cruel fate that Brendan Fraser, who was once considered for the role of Superman in the early 2000s, never got to see his Man of Steel fly by. What hurts more is that Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock was also once attached to the project, and she could have been perfect for the role of Lois Lane against Brendan Fraser’s Superman.

It was back in the early 2000s when Warner Bros. called on J.J. Abrams to pen a script about a new Superman movie. Brendan Fraser was one of the actors who had been heavily considered for the role alongside Paul Walker and others.

When you think of childhood movies, The Wizard of Oz is probably one of the first that comes to mind. It had a magical forest, the poppy field, and the flying monkeys—what more could a kid want? But let’s be real: for all its charm and color, that movie had some moments that seriously messed with our heads. Especially that ending scene with the Wicked Witch of the West. You remember it, right? Because that sequence just turned into a nightmare for kids.
Now guess what? Storyline-wise, the 1939 movie was the sequel to James Franco’s 2013 film Oz the Great and Powerful. And surprisingly, Franco’s movie had all the whimsical elements, the shiny visuals, and cool witches—but no such twisted nightmarish scenes. That’s what reminded viewers of just how creepy the original was. So let’s check out why this sequel freaked people out.

Leo Woodall earned his breakout fame as Dexter Mayhew in Netflix’s One Day, a charming, easy-going man at first, but plagued by self-doubt and destruction. So while many of us fell in love with the Bridget Jones star‘s flawed character, his new role as Valdimir in an upcoming thriller may just rewrite how you see him.
With his latest project, Vladimir, Woodall dives into a darker, more complex persona—a character so far removed from the charming romantic of his past that it might leave fans reeling.

Image Source: Warner Bros Darren Aronofsky is used to praise as well as criticism. Viewers and critics often split over his films; The Fountain, his 2006 movie, did nothing different. The movie combines romance, fantasy, and sci-fi as it moves across centuries with breadth and passion, telling an epic story of love, loss, and the search of purpose. Though visionary, The Fountain was struggling financially, earning a little bit over $15 million against a $35 million budget. Still, over time it found its audience. What once seemed too theoretical for the general population has now gained a cult following. Viewers related strongly with its melancholy images and sensitive center. Starring Hugh Jackman and Oscar winner Rachel Weisz, the movie took a different path for Jackman, who was more famous then for major action pictures such as X-Men. He once called the experience of creating The Fountain nothing he had ever been through before,...

In Andrew Davis' 1996 thriller "Chain Reaction," Keanu Reeves plays Eddie Kasalivich, a machinist at the University of Chicago who is overseeing a special scientific experiment to turn hydrogen into energy. Eddie isn't a genius, but he knows how the water-filled chain reaction chamber works. Then, one night, he accidentally discovers an obscure sound frequency that stabilizes the experiment and gets it to succeed. It seems that the world's energy supply issues are going to be solved.
Of course, this immediately kicks off a shadowy cover-up wherein the chain reaction chamber is blown up by unknown conspirators and Eddie is framed for the destruction. (The explosion takes out eight full city blocks.) Innocent scientists are killed, so Eddie has to go on the run with a physicist named Lily, played by Reeves at-the-time-future "Constantine" co-star Rachel Weisz. Naturally, they must find a way to prove their innocence and discover who would...

Dune director Denis Villeneuve is reportedly in the running to helm Amazon's upcoming James Bond film. An industry insider recently shared the names of five directors vying for the project.
Matthew Belloni's Pucknewsletter recently revealed that Edward Berger, Denis Villeneuve, Edgar Wright, Jonathan Nolan and Paul King are all in the running for the next Bond movie. This February, it was revealed that the longtime producers of the James Bond franchise had lost control of it, with Amazon MGM Studios taking over. The project does not currently have a release date or any real information about its cast or plot, but shortly after the news broke, Amazon owner Jeff Bezos began asking fans about who the next James Bond actor should be.
For now, Belloni's short list of directors should be taken with a grain of salt, but the Hollywood insider has already been correct about other aspects of the Bond franchise.

When Leonardo DiCaprio Wanted To Be In The Mummy (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
Before Brendan Fraser became the roguish Rick O’Connell with a shotgun in one hand and a smirk in the other, the desert winds almost blew in Leonardo DiCaprio’s direction, as per IMDb. Fresh off the Titanic wave, DiCaprio had his eye on The Mummy. Word is, he loved the script and badly wanted the role, but timing messed with the plan.
He had already signed on to do The Beach, Danny Boyle’s island-hopping drama that was supposed to show off his post-Jack Dawson edge. Leonardo DiCaprio reportedly asked for a delay on that film so he could chase mummies in Morocco instead. The producers shut that request down. Ironically, The Beach ended up getting delayed anyway.
