Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) Review
Image
The success of the original Poltergeist (1982), a masterful blend of suburban anxiety and supernatural terror, seemed to guarantee a rich future for the franchise. Directed by Tobe Hooper and famously guided by Steven Spielberg, the film remains a textbook case of how to balance heart-pounding scares with moments of familial tenderness. By contrast, Poltergeist II: The Other Side has always felt like a pale echo of its predecessor – a sequel that revisits familiar territory but struggles to carve out its own identity.

Set a year after the events of the original, Poltergeist II finds the Freeling family – Diane (JoBeth Williams), Steven (Craig T. Nelson), Robbie (Oliver Robins), and the ever-captivating Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke) – attempting to rebuild their lives. Now living with Diane’s mother, they’re haunted not just by the memories of their spectral ordeal but by literal ghosts who refuse to let go. Their suburban nightmare is far from over.

Every Kevin Costner Western, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Westerns experienced a decline in popularity until Clint Eastwood's Dollars trilogy revived the genre, and Kevin Costner helped revive them further. Kevin Costner's recent Western, Horizon: An American Saga, has divided audiences and critics but is proof that the Western genre is alive and well. Costner has a mixed track record with Western films, with Dances With Wolves being a classic but Wyatt Earp falling short.

Kevin Costner has been responsible for some true Western classics, although not every one of his Westerns has been a hit. Westerns in general used to be one of the most popular movie genres, but around the '60s, their popularity started to wane. Audiences and filmmakers started to feel Westerns were too old-fashioned, though Clint Eastwood's Dollars trilogy and the Spaghetti Westerns they inspired gave the genre a shot in the arm. The abject failure of 1980's expensive epic Heaven's Gate was...

Did 1983’s The Day After prevent a nuclear war?
Image
Just over forty years ago, on November 20th, 1983, ABC aired the most influential TV movie ever made. The Day After, which starred Jason Robards, John Lithgow, JoBeth Williams and Steve Guttenberg, was a riveting dramatization of the aftermath of a nuclear war, focusing on the residents of a small town dealing with the most terrifying outcome of all – surviving. Along with other movies of the era, such as Testament and the UK’s Threads, it was seen as a cry for disarmament, as no one could ever possibly “win” a nuclear war.

This week, PBS is airing a documentary on the film called Television Event, and in it, they put forward the notion that the movie may have helped prevent a nuclear war. In it, director Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) relates the following intriguing anecdote (excerpted by THR):

“The movie may have indeed helped prevent a nuclear war.

Apocalypse Then: 40 Years Ago, A TV Movie Saved the World from Nuclear Annihilation
Image
Americans had a lot of choices about what to watch on TV the night of Nov. 20, 1983.

On CBS, they could enjoy an evening of sitcoms, beginning with Alice, then moving onto The Jeffersons and Goodnight, Beantown, finally wrapping up their prime time viewing with an episode of Trapper John, M.D.

Across the dial on NBC, there was part one of Kennedy, a five-hour mini-series in which Martin Sheen put on a thick-as-chowder Bahston accent to portray, for a change, a president not named Bartlet.

But most people — a staggering 100 million — chose to tune into ABC, where they watched the end of the world.

Next to the moon landing, it’s hard to think of a TV moment that had a bigger impact on the collective psyche than The Day After, ABC’s white-knuckle drama depicting the aftermath of a nuclear strike on the United States. Its airing 40 years ago...

Directed by The Texas Chain Saw Massacre helmer Tobe Hobber, with Spielberg co-writing the screenplay alongside Michael Grais and Mark Victor, 1982's Poltergeist focused on a suburban family and what happens when their young daughter is abducted by ghosts. The film, which starred JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, and Beatrice Straight, was a big success and grossed more than $76 million during the first year of its release. It led to sequels and a 2015 remake.

‘Poltergeist’ TV Series in the Works at Amazon MGM Studios
Heather O'Rourke in Poltergeist (1982)
Amazon MGM Studios is in the midst of early development for a TV series adaptation of classic horror film “Poltergeist,” TheWrap has learned.

Originally cowritten and produced by Steven Spielberg in 1982, the show version of “Poltergeist” will be executive produced by Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey on behalf of Amblin Television, which produced the original film. The TV series will be based on the world of the horror flick.

Starring JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson and Beatrice Straight, the 1982 film centers on the Freeling family, who learn shortly after moving into their suburban home that their house is full of malicious ghosts who abduct their 5-year-old daughter, Carol Anne. In an effort to rescue their daughter, the parents consult a parapsychologist and a spiritual medium.

Following the release of the Spielberg-created film, the “Poltergeist” franchise released two sequels, one in 1986 and another in 1988. Zelda Rubinstein, who played the spiritual medium,...

‘Poltergeist’ TV Series Now in Early Development from Amazon and MGM
Image
We are nearly ten years removed from the most recent installment in the Poltergeist franchise, with the Gil Kenan-directed remake released back in 2015. That film failed to make a splash of any kind, coming along in the wake of two sequels and a TV series.

So what’s going on with the Poltergeist franchise? Amazon, you may recall, recently acquired MGM, and it looks like Amazon is soon bringing the classic horror franchise back to life.

Variety reports this afternoon that a Poltergeist television series is in early development at Amazon MGM Studios. There is no further information on their plans at this time, however.

Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce on behalf of Amblin Television.

The original horror classic, Poltergeist was released in 1982, directed by Tobe Hooper and co-written and produced by Steven Spielberg. JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson and the late Heather O’Rourke starred as...

The movie marked another financial triumph for director Kasdan, whose feature debut two years earlier, “Body Heat,” did well at the box office and with critics. Read on as Gold Derby celebrates “The Big Chill” 40th anniversary.

With dual strikes currently underway, it’s an uncertain time for actors – and this is a profession that is used to uncertainty. Julian Barry Dies: Writer Of Oscar-Nominated Lenny Bruce Biopic And Acclaimed Broadway Version Was 92
Image
Julian Barry, whose 1971 Broadway play and 1974 movie, both titled Lenny and telling the story of legendary comic Lenny Bruce, died Tuesday at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 92.

His death was reported to The New York Times by his daughter Julia Barry, who said he died in his sleep and had been under medical care for congestive heart failure and late-stage kidney disease.

Although most widely known for his highly influential Bruce projects, which earned considerable acclaim for the writer and his title stars — Cliff Gorman on stage, Dustin Hoffman on screen — Barry’s career extended to other projects that caught the public’s attention in their day. He wrote Rhinoceros, the 1974 film adaptation of Eugène Ionesco’s play starring Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel, a movie that has grown somewhat in esteem since its initial critical dismissal, and the 1978 Faye Dunaway vehicle Eyes of Laura Mars, which has not.

After ‘Oppenheimer,’ watch these end of the world movies
Image
Ever since movies began, filmmakers have depicted the end of the world of the world on screen whether it be from floods, asteroids, comets, alien invasion and even Zombies. But cinema went nuclear after the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August, 1945. The arrival of the nuclear age heralded the introduction of a new sub-genre: destruction by atomic bomb. And with the release July 21 of Christopher Nolan’s lauded “Oppenheimer,” which domestically earned some $70 million in its opening weekend, let’s look at some of the vintage flicks of the genre.

Nuclear destruction of London is stopped at the last moment in the taut 1950 British film “Seven Days to Noon,” directed by John and Roy Boulting and winners of the original story Oscar, stars veteran character actor Barry Jones as a brilliant scientist working at an atomic research center in London who steals an A-bomb that...

Spielberg or Hooper - Who Really Directed Poltergeist?
Image
Perhaps more than any other genre, horror has been a pool of creativity that birthed some of the most twisted, beautiful and forward-thinking ideas. Whether it be something thought-provoking and thrilling like Night of the Living Dead or a commentary on social issues like Candyman, horror was never without its creative push. This also led to a unique pairing between Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper for the now iconic haunted house movie, Poltergeist.

Poltergeist followed a family that moved into a new housing development only to find it was already inhabited by the angered spirits that resided below the foundation. Though the movie was tame compared to the more gory slasher stories of the time, Poltergeist used creative ideas, such as the family's daughter getting lost in the spirit world, to make the fears more cerebral. It also had audiences question whether their quaint suburban home could be the home to angry spiritual entities.

I Am Sybil: Elle Fanning and Sarah Paulson to star in Mirrah Foulkes’ dissociative identity disorder drama
Image
Two of the most enigmatic actresses of our time, Elle Fanning and Sarah Paulson, will lead Mirrah Foulkes’ new film project, I Am Sybil. Foulkes directs from a script she co-wrote with Jen Silverman, recreating the true story of Sybil, one of the first widely recognized cases of dissociative identity disorder (formerly called multiple personality disorder).

Sybil was the name given to Shirley Mason, who, in a study conducted by Flora Rheta Schreiber, examined Mason’s treatment for Mpd by psychologist Connie Wilbur. The forthcoming film draws inspiration from Debbie Nathan‘s 2011 novel Sybil Exposed: The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case, examining flaws in Schreiber’s findings.

We don’t know who Fanning and Paulson play in Foulkes’ film project, but sources say Fanning plays Mason while Paulson plays Wilbur. I Am Sybil is not the first cinematic retelling of Mason’s story. Sally Field and Joanne Woodward...

Elle Fanning & Sarah Paulson Set For Mirrah Foulkes’ ‘I Am Sybil’ Based On Famed Case Of Multiple Personality Disorder
Image
Exclusive: Elle Fanning (The Great) and Sarah Paulson (Ratched) are attached to star in I Am Sybil, a new film co-written and directed by Mirrah Foulkes (Judy & Punch) that explores the gripping true story behind the best-selling book and cultural-sensation case of Sybil, one of the first mainstream cases of dissociative identity disorder, which spurred questions in the public consciousness around identity and mental health.

Sybil was a pseudonym given to Shirley Mason in a 1973 work of nonfiction by Flora Rheta Schreiber, which examined the young woman’s treatment for Mpd by psychologist Connie Wilbur. The source material the new film will draw on is Debbie Nathan’s 2011 book Sybil Exposed: The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case, one of a number of texts that dispute the facts of Schreiber’s account.

While the producers wouldn’t confirm the...

The Arrow in the Head Show goes to the other side with Poltergeist II
Tobe Hooper
A new episode of The Arrow in the Head Show has just been released, and in this one hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are talking about Poltergeist – but not the Tobe Hooper / Steven Spielberg classic from 1982. The Poltergeist movie they’re focusing on in this episode is the 1986 sequel Poltergeist II: The Other Side (watch it Here), the one with the creepy reverend and the tequila worm. To find out what they had to say about it, check out the video embedded above!

Directed by Brian Gibson from a screenplay written by Michael Grais and Mark Victor, Poltergeist II has the following synopsis: The Freelings have escaped their haunted house, which is now being studied by paranormal investigators, including shaman Taylor. This past weekend, Wamg attended the annual TCM Film Festival (honestly this writer’s favorite event of the year) and as usual, it did not disappoint! There was a ton of great programming this year, with something for just about everyone.

TCM Film Festival Wraps With Focus on WB at 100 and Screen Sirens of the ’60s
Image
If the 14th annual TCM Classic Film Festival had an official focus, it was on the 100th anniversary of Warner Bros., from the opening night premiere selection of a restoration of “Rio Bravo” to a celebration of the 50th anniversary of “The Exorcist.” Almost equal in emphasis, though, by virtue of the guests brought in, was a celebration of the ingenues-turned-leading-ladies of the 1960s, who now represent the elder guard of a Hollywood golden age — Angie Dickinson, Ann-Margret and Shirley Jones.

Dickinson had the highest profile of any star at the festival, being the belle of the ball at the Thursday screening of “Rio Bravo” in the big house at the Tcl Chinese Theatres, where most of the screenings were held. But there was just as much outpouring of affection for Ann-Margret, who turned up for a Q&a (and birthday cake) following “Bye Bye Birdie” on Saturday, and Jones,...

Lovely Trailer for 'Chantilly Bridge' - A Follow-Up to 'Chantilly Lace'
Image
"There is a land of the living, and the land of the dead, and the bridge is love – the only survival, the only meaning." Quiver Distr. has released an official trailer for an indie dramedy titled Chantilly Bridge, the latest from filmmaker Linda Yellen. The film is a follow-up to her feature Chantilly Lace from 1993, which was shot at the Sundance resort, a 30-years-later look (though the movie says it's 25 years later) at these same friends and what they're up to nowadays. Years later, the same brilliant actresses from Chantilly Lace return to bring their characters to life again in Chantilly Bridge. In a rare cinematic experience that travels back and forth between films, the characters' memories implode on the present. With unpredictable humor and searing honesty they confront old resentments, celebrate milestones, and rediscover the unbreakable bond among friends who knew each other when, there for each other now.

Every Cheers Character Who Could Return For The Frasier Revival
Image
The upcoming Frasier revival could also feature the returns of various Cheers characters. As a spinoff from Cheers, the original Frasier swiftly established itself as another hugely popular sitcom that went on to run for the same number of seasons as its parent show. When Kelsey Grammer returns as Dr. Frasier Crane in the upcoming Paramount+ revival show, he'll likely be joined by some returning faces from the original show, with some notable absences. However, Frasier's links back to the infamous Boston bar also allow the show to become a secret Cheers sequel show.

So far, only Kelsey Grammer is confirmed to star in the Frasier reboot with characters from the original show likely to return as guest stars. This is very similar to how the majority of Cheers characters appeared across Frasier's 11 seasons. Therefore, it wouldn't be a massive stretch of the imagination to suggest that some Cheers actors...
