Noah Wyle isn’t ruling out an ER reunion on his current medical drama, The Pitt. But in a new interview with Variety, the Emmy nominee reveals why he’s not necessarily campaigning for any of his former costars to join him on HBO Max in the immediate future.
While he would “never say never” to acting opposite an old friend, Wyle explains that stunt-casting will never take precedence over the series’ mission, which is to offer as realistic a depiction as possible of the greatest challenges facing healthcare workers in modern-day America.

The Pitt star Noah Wyle explains Robby's struggles in season 2 of the medical drama after his major realization during the season 1 finale. During The Pitt season 1 finale, Robby comes to terms with needing help after having a breakdown after being unable to save his stepson's girlfriend. A heartfelt conversation with Dr. Abbot laid groundwork for next steps.
Speaking with TV Insider, Wyle explained Robby's position in The Pitt season 2. He said that, while the attending physician is doing his best to heal, it's not something that will happen overnight. Instead, season 2 will be a building block for the larger story he's going through, hinting at how he's evolved in the time skip between new episodes:

Noah Wyle is back with executive producers John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill to revisit the state of the healthcare system. They wanted to show how much has changed, and worsened, especially after the pandemic and a wave of misinformation that has led many people to distrust medical experts.
John Wells thinks some of the anger towards healthcare workers comes from not understanding how tough their jobs are. But Wyle and Gemmill believe a bigger problem is “ignorance” coming from “the highest levels” of the U.S. government. Wyle puts it bluntly: “We’re having germ theory debated, for God’s sake. Come on! What are we talking about here? What are we trying to normalize? It’s nuts.”

Noah Wyle is back, and he teamed up again with executive producers John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill to bring viewers a fresh look at the healthcare system. Their new series, “The Pitt,” explored the serious challenges facing medicine today, challenges made worse by the pandemic and a flood of misinformation that has caused people to distrust medical experts.
Wells thinks some of the hostility toward healthcare workers comes from people not understanding the pressures those workers face every day. But Wyle and Gemmill blame what they call “ignorance” coming from the top levels of the U.S. government. Wyle said, “We’re having germ theory debated, for God’s sake. Come on! What are we talking about here? What are we trying to normalize? It’s nuts.”
The first season of “The Pitt” covered a wide range of tough topics. Over 15 episodes, it tackled gun violence, vaccines, abortion, and drug addiction.

The Pitt producer John Wells has explained season 2's saddest character exit, revealing what their fate means for the future of the medical drama. The Pitt season 2 will see multiple changes for the show, with the upcoming episodes being set during Fourth of July weekend. One of these changes includes Tracy Ifeachor's exit as Dr. Heather Collins.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Wells opened up about Ifeachor not returning as Dr. Collins for The Pitt season 2. The producer explained how, as a senior resident, her leaving the hospital eventually makes sense. He explains how keeping the whole cast for the entire show wouldn't be a realistic portrayal of teaching hospitals. Check out what he said below:

For 15 seasons, “ER” revolutionized the medical drama genre, combining fast-paced, immersive storytelling with a deep exploration of the inner lives of doctors and their patients. But more than a decade after the NBC drama’s end, star Noah Wyle wanted to reteam with executive producers John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill to do a check-up of sorts on the healthcare system, whose issues have only been exacerbated by the pandemic and a virulent ecosystem of misinformation that has bred contempt and distrust of medical experts.
While Wells believes some of the antipathy towards healthcare workers stems from a lack of awareness of the pressures of the medical system, Wyle and Gemmill think the “ignorance” that comes from “the highest levels” of the U.S. government is to blame.

The Pitt season 2 date is seemingly revealed by executive producer John Wells. Led by Noah Wyle, with R. Scott Gemmill as creator and Wells also directing, The Pitt debuted on HBO Max in January and marks a return to the medical drama genre for all three, after their work on the iconic 1990s series ER.
Consisting of fifteen episodes, the HBO Max Original's debut outing centered on Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch (Wyle) during a chaotic 15-hour shift at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital. The premise, unfolding one hour at a time, proved to be a hit with critics and audiences. The Pitt season 2 was quickly confirmed.

Since he got his start in Hollywood nearly 40 years ago, John Wells has averaged more successes per decade than most creatives accumulate over an entire career.
The prolific writer, director, producer and filmmaker’s latest feat is The Pitt, a real-time medical drama that spans one 12-hour emergency room shift in a 15-episode season. Reuniting Wells with former ER collaborators R. Scott Gemmill and Noah Wyle, the HBO Max procedural launched unexpectedly into the zeitgeist with its January premiere — thanks in part to weekly drops (how novel!) that saw the audience quickly pass 10 million per episode. This is hardly Wells’ first time scrubbing in for TV. He cut his teeth writing on China Beach, then developed ER with the late Michael Crichton and co-created Third Watch. Along the way, he also made the U.S. version of Shameless, directed four films (including the celebrated adaptation of August: Osage County) and...

“When I first walked onto the set of The Pitt, it was so realistic,” recalls director Amanda Marsalis. She continues, "I was going, ‘I'm not sick, I can go home.’” Watch our full interview above with Marsalis joining our Gold Derby "Meet the Experts" directors panel.
The medical drama for HBO Max stars Noah Wyle as Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch. Each of the episodes chronicles a subsequent real-time hour of a shift in the emergency room at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Marsalis compares the role of director to being an ER doctor, adding, “I'm not saving anyone's lives to be very clear, but it is a lot like an orchestra. You are leading and you need to be aware of all pieces at all times. I mean, I do feel very close to Noah, you know, as the leader of our world there."

In The Pitt Season 1, Robby is “a drowning man that doesn’t know he’s drowning yet,” says star and executive producer (and writer and director) Noah Wyle. “At the end of it, he recognizes the need for a life preserver. He’s still got a long way to swim to shore though.” The critically acclaimed HBO Max medical drama received 13 Emmy nominations, including Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Wyle, and is deep in production on Season 2, set to premiere in January 2026. The series is told in real-time, with each season one shift (and each episode one hour), and it will pick up 10 months later (on Fourth of July weekend). When we last saw Robby, he’d had a breakdown after failing to save his stepson’s girlfriend and Abbot (Shawn Hatosy) found him on the roof — closer to the edge than the vet had been in the premiere,...

Sam Rockwell may have received an Emmy nomination this year for his performance inThe White Lotus season 3, but the acclaimed actor has revealed that he bombed an audition for one of television's most iconic shows, ER. The iconic medical series premiered on NBC on September 19, 1994, and ran for 15 seasons.
ER starred Anthony Edwards, George Clooney, Noah Wyle, Julianna Margulies, and other well-known actors. Wyle, who played another doctor in a medical drama series this year from HBO called The Pitt, played John Carter in ER. Carter, who starts season 1 as a med student, is a main character in ER until the end of the eleventh season.
During a group interview with Entertainment Tonight that promoted Rockwell's new movie The Bad Guys 2, he shared that he auditioned for the role of John Carter for ER. While Rockwell assumed he had done a great job on the audition initially, the...

The Bad Guys 2star Sam Rockwell explains how he lost out of Noah Wyles' part in ER.
Speaking toEntertainment Weekly, Rockwell recalled his attempt to fit the part of an emergency room doctor while auditioning for 1994's ER. "I came with a lab coat and a hypodermic [needle]. But not the needle part, just the plastic part," Rockwell said. "It's almost like I brought a gun to an audition. They were looking at me with this hypodermic thing... There was no needle! Just to be clear. I'm not that crazy." Rockwell added that he "though I nailed it."

Playing Dr. John Carter on ER made Noah Wyle a household name, but not necessarily an Emmy winner. At least not yet. Still, the actor logged one of the longest gaps in Emmy nominations — 26 years, to be exact. Finally, this June, the actor returned to the ballot, this time for The Pitt, the HBO Max breakout that’s dominating conversations in 2025.
“I’m a different person and it’s a little sweeter to have it as a second chance — a second act,” Wyle tells THR. “It feels really gratifying to be doing work that’s resonating with so many people again. The first time around, you don’t really have the perspective of knowing how rare that kind of success is. People could say, ‘This is amazing, how popular this show is. This doesn’t happen.’ But you don’t have a frame of reference for that kind of statement.

Sam Rockwellhas had a slew of iconic roles, but recently revealed that he lost out on another one. Rockwell detailed an audition he had for ER, the iconic 1990s drama set in a Chicago hospital. But this wasn't for a cameo role or bit part on the show — Rockwell revealed that he auditioned fully in character for the lead role of Dr. John Carter, who would eventually be played by Noah Wyle.
"I was up for ER," Rockwell said during a roundtable discussion with Entertainment Tonight, where he was joined by his co-stars for his upcoming film The Bad Guys 2. "Noah Wyle's part. "They thought I was nuts. It's almost like I brought a gun into the audition ... anyway, I did not get the job.

With the Emmy Awards just over a month away, the potential winners are starting to sever themselves from the rest of the pack.
Based on Gold Derby's latest predictions, Severance, The Studio, and Adolescence are frontrunners in drama, comedy and limited, respectively. Since 2005, "Grey's Anatomy" has captivated an astoundingly broad and enduring audience that can't be denied. Despite its seemingly restrictive setting and genre, it has something to offer everyone -- those thrilled by the functions of a busy hospital; fans of melodramatic reveals and romances, as well as those invested in mature relationships; and especially those who want hundreds of high-quality episodes to keep them company as they grow into the next season of their life.
And yet, despite how culturally relevant the series has remained for over two decades, it's this unique combination of subgenres and styles that makes "Grey's Anatomy" one of the more difficult shows for us to offer recommendations for. Sure, it would be easy enough to toss out 15 of the most popular medical procedurals out there and call it a day -- but we know we can do better. As such, we've gathered a mix of twisty,...

The Awards Magnet team is back to dish all the drama over drama at the 2025 Emmys.

The Pitt is plowing ahead with Season 2 and recently a new actor was added to the cast. According to Deadline, actor Lawrence Robinson, who has shows including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Sistas under his belt, has been cast in a recurring role.
The outlet says that Robinson will play Brian Hancock, "a sweet, charming, and kind-hearted patient who turns a soccer injury into a possible meet-cute with one of the doctors." But as for which doctor, that information is being kept strictly under wraps for now. There are certainly a lot of doctors to choose from. Among them are Noah Wyle as Dr. Robby, Taylor Dearden as Dr. Mel King, Supriya Ganesh as Dr. Samira Mohan, Patrick Ball as Dr. Frank Langdon, and Isa Briones as Dr .Trinity Santos.
Robinson is delighted to be appearing on the show. He took to Instagram to make a post about his gratitude.

The Pitt‘s first season was a hit not only with critics but also with fans. From the first episode, it has been so good — Noah Wyle was born to play a doctor and is absolutely outstanding as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, and the ensemble cast is strong — so it was great to see it renewed in-season after the seventh episode. The Pitt Season 2 production is well underway, and a number of new cast members have been revealed. The latest casting comes on Tuesday, July 29, with news of Lawrence Robinson recurring as a patient. The medical drama takes place in real time, with each episode of a season covering an hour of a shift. Season 1 covered the day of Pittfest, with the victims of a shooting at the musical festival brought into the hospital. Season 2 will take place over the Fourth of July weekend. Read on for everything we know...

Creator R. Scott Gemmill and leading star Noah Wyle are hard at work filming The Pitt Season 2, but they’ve just received some additional reinforcements in the way of a Law & Order: Svu star. Deadline reports that Lawrence Robinson, also known for his roles in Sistas and Tales, has joined the cast of The Pitt Season 2. Robinson will reportedly play Brian Hancock, a sweet, charming patient who comes into Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center with a soccer injury, but turns it into a meet-cute with one of the doctors. It’s unclear which doctor he’ll interact with, or if he’ll appear for more than one episode. The Pitt Season 2 is expected to continue filming for the next few months as it eyes an early 2026 release date, around the same time Season 1 was released earlier this year.

Phase In
And just like that, we’re nearly two weeks into Phase 2. After the initial head-swirling buzz of Emmy nominations, the industry has been in that quiet in-between space where studios are working behind-the-scenes to wrangle their stars out of summer vacation plans to get them back on the campaign trail. Expect the plates to start spinning madly again next week with interviews, roundtables and FYC events quickly filling up the calendar.
The TV Academy itself is getting into the Phase 2 FYC space for the first time with the launch of Televerse, a three-day shindig scheduled for Aug. 14-16 and featuring officially sanctioned contender panels. The guidelines detail strict rules for these panels, though, including length of time (a hard out at 60 minutes), number of talent involved (eight plus a moderator), and location. Go anywhere else and you can’t bill yourself as such to Academy members, or invite them directly.

At this year's Emmys, The Pitt did quite well by scoring 13 nominations overall. Its star, Noah Wyle, is currently the frontrunner to win Best Drama Actor, according to the Gold Derby predictions. He previously earned five bids in supporting for his role as John Carter on ER, but never won. If he prevails this time, this would not only mark his very first Emmy, but he'd also be the 11th performer since 2000 to have triumphed in this particular category for a first-year show.
In The Pitt, Wyle plays Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, a senior attending physician who starts a grueling 15-hour shift at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital's emergency room by welcoming four newcomers. The Pitt won itself a huge fanbase for its grittiness, its acting, its attention to detail — and its ability to highlight issues that affect real-life members of the medical profession. In Season 2 it plans to do this again, via the character of Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle).

HBO Max's medical drama, The Pitt, will return for a new season at the turn of the year. Season 1 was, for all intents and purposes, a highly intense shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. The series follows a group of doctors, nurses, and other medical staff led by Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch (Noah Wyle) as they navigate various challenges across their shift. Season 1 showed that Robby has been unable to cope with the loss of his mentor during the pandemic. Series showrunner R. Scott Gemmill hopes to help take away the stigma of mental health checkups for doctors by having Robby acknowledge his own mentla struggles when the show returns.

The Pitt hopes to take away the stigma of mental health checkups for doctors by having Noah Wyle’s Robby acknowledge that he needs help in the new season, Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill said Thursday.
While participating in an Hrts discussion about the need for more realistic portrayals of U.S. caregivers, Gemmill gave a hint about what to expect from Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, the central character in the Emmy-nominated drama. The series from Gemmill, Wyle and John Wells kicked off in January by focusing on Robby’s inability to cope with the death of his mentor during the pandemic.

A little over a decade ago, director Steven Soderbergh announced that he was going to retire from filmmaking. A key figure in the American independent movement, Soderbergh had proven himself to be a steady studio hand as well, taking the blockbuster Ocean’s trilogy of heist films to global box office success. His announcement came as a shock to his fans. But they needn’t have worried, because during this “retirement,” Soderbergh directed 20 episodes of a critically acclaimed television show. Starring Clive Owen, The Knick was released on the Cinemax channel in 2014, and has now witnessed a spike on the HBO Max streaming charts.
According to FlixPatrol, The Knick was the ninth-most-watched show globally on HBO Max on July 22, before dropping out of the top 10 list a day later. It debuted in several European countries a couple of days ago, which explains the sudden spike. The Knickhas developed a cult following over the years,...

One week removed from the 2025 Emmy nominations and there are some clear trends emerging in the Gold Derby predictions. Among the marquee races, for example, Adolescence is the runaway favorite for Best Limited Series, The Studio has opened up a lead over Hacks for Best Comedy Series, and there's a substantial gap between front-runner Severance and The Pitt in Best Drama Series.
However, when it comes to that last category, a closer dive into the data shows a striking chasm between overall voters and the Gold Derby experts, which includes film critics, journalists, and historians. And it doesn't bode well for the Lumon industrial complex.
Although we're still in early days, and we still don't have a critical mass of inputs, Severance comfortably leads the combined-predictions race with 67 percent to The Pitt's 23 percent.

Freida Pinto is making a striking return to prestige television with Netflix’s upcoming drama, an adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri’s bestselling story collection, Unaccustomed Earth. For a show about the harrowing realities of being an emergency medicine practitioner, "The Pitt" sure is addictive. Season 1 of the HBO Max series proved to be a breakout hit, which is impressive considering it's full of some of the most gut-wrenching emotion you're ever likely to experience in a TV show. Part of the reason audiences were so hooked by the medical drama has to do with how it so effectively conveys a sense of realism, not just in terms of medical accuracy, for which "The Pitt" has been endlessly praised, but in terms of the characters and their lives. Every member of "The Pitt" cast feels like they're playing a fully-formed person, which is a testament to the talented actors and the writers who brought those individuals to life.
But there's more that goes into the series' sense of realism. For one thing, "The Pitt" doesn't feature any music.

Before Noah Wyle brought us the best new medical drama in years with "The Pitt," he was most well-known for playing Dr. John Carter on what remains the gold standard of the genre: "ER." The actor was one of the main cast members of the popular NBC series from the very beginning and would remain a major part of the show for 11 seasons. Wyle left "ER" in 2004, though his character returned for a few episodes in later seasons. But back in 1994, when the show debuted, John Carter was a humble medical student at the series' fictionalized version of Chicago's Cook County Hospital. That same year, NBC debuted another show that would similarly become one of the most celebrated and culturally influential in the history of TV. The pilot episode of "Friends" aired on September 22, 1994, just three days after the very first "ER" installment was broadcast, and the two shows went...

It’s a “Severance” world. The Apple TV+ series dominated this year’s Emmy nominations with 27 nods, and despite the show’s critical and ratings acclaim, Variety‘s Awards Circuit podcast hosts were still taken aback.

When it comes to predicting the Emmys, there is one group of bellwether categories worth paying close attention to. Over the past decade, a notable trend has emerged: the winners for Best Drama Series and Best Drama Casting have mirrored each other seven times; Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Casting eight times; and Best Limited Series and Best Limited/Movie Casting nine times. That's a combined accuracy rate of 80 percent over the most recent 10-year period.
With that in mind, our gaze is fixed on the three casting races for the 2025 Emmys, where The Pitt, The Studio, and Adolescence are already making compelling cases as the early front-runners.

Are we in store for more “Emmy sweepers?”
With more than 25,000 voting members, the Television Academy is made up of 31 peer groups, each representing a specific field of expertise — actors, writers, editors, and so on. Of the many categories, only 15 are voted on by the entire membership. These include outstanding comedy, drama, limited or anthology series, television movie, talk series, variety special (live and pre-recorded), short form, hosted nonfiction series, structured and unstructured reality, reality competition, scripted variety and game show.
Unlike the Oscars, which allow all eligible members to vote in the final round, the Emmys restrict both nomination and winner selection to designated peer groups. That exclusivity shapes the voting landscape — and it explains the rise of a modern phenomenon: the Emmy sweep.
Only once before 2020 had a series ever won all seven major categories: HBO’s “Angels in America” in 2004. Then came the Covid-era stunner: Pop TV’s “Schitt’s Creek,...

Intense. That is the most appropriate word to use in describing the shift endured by the staff members at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center in HBO Max's medical drama, The Pitt. The series follows a group of doctors, nurses, and other medical staff led by Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) in real-time throughout a shift at the hospital, detailing the various challenges, personal and professional, that arise and how the team copes with them. Season 1 detailed quite a challenging shift for Katherine Lanasa's Dana Evans, the hospital's Charge Nurse. During the course of the shift, Dana was assaulted by an angry patient, and it resulted in her thinking she should quit. With Season 2 currently filming, Lanasa has confirmed her character's return while teasing changes.

Noah Wyle, the star and producer of HBO's new hit medical drama hit The Pitt, has addressed the unexpected exit of co-star Tracy Ifeachor from Season 2. The actor who played a key role as a senior resident in Season 1 is not set to return for the second season, which is currently in production (it is still unconfirmed whether the role will be recast or written out entirely). Reasons remain a secret, but many are speculating that her exit could be related to the actor's ties to a conservative church in the U.K. Although Wyle does not say why Ifeachor has left the show, he has now addressed the conspiracy theories that have since been swirling around.
Ifeachor played Dr. Heather Collins in Season 1 of the HBO Max show that took viewers inside the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital during a very hectic day in the emergency room. Collins was a...
