Scroll through any list of the greatest achievements in American film, and Billy Wilder’s work is bound to show up. Arguably the most successful of Hollywood’s post-war émigrés, Austria-born Wilder built a reputation for razor-sharp screenplays in the 1930s before transitioning to the director’s chair.
His third film in America, “Double Indemnity” (1944), would prove to be his first masterpiece and the launching pad for the themes and ticks that would recur throughout his body of work. The man could tackle film noir, romantic comedy, war movies, farce, courtroom dramas, and everything in between. He imbued each genre with his trademark wit and a knack for taut storytelling, which resulted in hit after hit during Hollywood’s golden age.

By 1973, Richard Lester, Philadelphia-born but as vital a figure in the cutting edge of ’60s British cinema as Tony Richardson and Lindsay Anderson, had run his film career aground with a string of flops. But he never fully gave up on his plans to adapt The Three Musketeers, a project originally intended as a vehicle for the Beatles.
A few years after the Fab Four went their separate ways, Lester finally got the production off the ground, and he approached his adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s classic 1844 novel with the same comic lens that informed his earlier work. Initially planned as a single epic complete with intermission, the final movie would be split in two for greater ease of distribution and profit potential.
The films follow the plot of the novel faithfully: Lowborn but skilled swordsman d’Artagnan (Michael York) travels from the country to the capital to join the elite Musketeers,...

The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers: Two Films by Richard Lester, Spine #1263, will be released in the Criterion Collection on May 27th, 2025.
As a child of the 90s, I grew up with Stephen Herek’s version of The Three Musketeers. It’s not particularly well-regarded these days, but with a cast including Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O’Donnell, and Tim Curry, it perfectly encapsulated its era and served as a solidly entertaining swashbuckler, at least through the eyes of a seven-year-old boy.
I was aware of other adaptations, including Richard Lester’s, but for decades, Harek’s film was my sole experience with the characters of Alexandre Dumas’ iconic novel on screen. Now, with a digitally remastered 4K edition coming to the Criterion Collection, I’ve seen what is arguably the superior adaptation.

There's something about young adult fiction that seems well-suited for dystopian stories, as exemplified by the "Divergent" novels by Veronica Roth. Adapted into a film series starting in 2014, the science fiction story had protagonist Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) rise from humble origins in the face of an authoritarian government. Tris joins and inspires a resistance movement to topple the regime, using her unique gifts to rally her supporters. And while the "Divergent" movies may have ended prematurely, without concluding its story, there are plenty of similar films that do present a complete story.
Many of the movies on this are dystopian science fiction, with the main characters often freedom fighters defying various tyrannies. These often involve a cataclysmic incident that facilitated a dark rise to power, with younger generations saving the day from older despots. On numerous occasions, these films are adaptations of beloved books,...

Among the most legendary actresses of all time, Ingrid Bergman looms large. Bergman's career extended across decades, and she was able to work with some of the greatest filmmakers of all time, from Alfred Hitchcock to Michael Curtiz to Leo McCarey. And moreover, many of the films in her filmography are widely, and correctly, considered among the best English-language films ever made, from "The Bells of St. Mary's" and "Gaslight" to one of the most iconic American and World War II films ever, "Casablanca." Bergman, unsurprisingly, was well rewarded for her immense talent and acting craft, netting three Oscars (as well as being nominated four other times). That she wasn't even nominated for "Casablanca," a film that has a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and walked away with the Best Picture Oscar, says something about how good she was and how not every one of her performances could get the golden statuette.

Seth MacFarlane Explains Peter Griffin's Startling Confession From a Classic Episode of 'Family Guy'
One of Family Guy's more memorable gags was during Season 4 in the 2006 episode, Untitled Griffin Family History. As the family could possibly drown in a panic room that's flooding, Peter has a major confession to make, "I did not care for The Godfather." His family's reactions are fairly relatable, despite the pending doom.
After the clip had gone viral, series creator and executive producer Seth MacFarlane jumped on X (formerly Twitter) to reveal one of the key lines when Peter was explaining to his stunned family why he didn't care for arguably one of the greatest films in cinematic history, "It insists upon itself."
"Since this has been trending, here's a fun fact: 'It insists upon itself' was a criticism my college film history professor used to explain why he didn't think 'The Sound of Music' was a great film. First-rate teacher, but I never quite followed that one.

After a delay, Family Guy is finally returning, with Season 23 premiering on Sunday Feb. 16, 2025. It will debut at 8 pm Et / Pt, which has long been The Simpsons' time slot, per TheWrap. Rounding out the two-hour block will be Grimsburg Season 2, The Great North Season 5, and Krapopolis Season 2.
The new episode will be a riff on Top Gun, with Peter playing Maverick as he mourns the death of Goose (Joe). His relationship with Charlie (Lois) is explored along with his son, Rooster (Chris). Given Family Guy's winning record with spoofs on beloved movies, expect this one to be a classic.
The show recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, despite being canceled twice since its series premiere on Jan. 31, 1999.
When Does 'The Simpsons' Return?
Just a few weeks back, it was reported that The Simpsons would lose its coveted Sundays at 8 pm Et / Pt time slot, and would be moved to Wednesday nights.

As we have mentioned many times before, the documentary is currently experiencing one of its golden periods, with the fact that reality goes beyond any script becoming quite obvious throughout the plethora of entries we have been seeing during that last few years. Furthermore, as a number of courageous filmmakers shed light to issues that are dangerous to depict (to say the least) or even hard to watch, the quality of the category continues to improve. Add to that the biographical ones, the ones that present real but relatively unknown sides of each country’s society and you have the majority of reasons for what we mentioned in the beginning.

The 2024 Family Guy holiday special, "The Gift of the White Guy," delivers the same irreverent comedy the show has become known for, with nothing very special about it. That is not to say the episode is bad, it has several laugh-out-loud moments, but in a series with well over 400 episodes, it becomes a challenge just to improve on itself. And with plenty of holiday specials in the past 25 years, this episode doesn't break the mold.

Although many older mystery movies lose their edge over the years, there are still some classics from the 1970s which can shock modern audiences. More so than most other genres, mystery movies are constantly seeking new innovations and quirks, or else they risk becoming stale and predictable. This means that certain mystery movies have a disappointingly short shelf life. Some old classics prove that this isn't always the case.
The 1970s produced a few outstanding mystery movies which have aged beautifully. Many of these movies adapted the works of revered crime authors like Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler. Whether they were period pieces or set in the 1970s, the best of these movies found ways to revitalize old ideas so that they could shock their audiences. There were also some truly original mystery movies which charted a path forward for the entire genre, like Chinatown and Deep Red.

The actor and model answers your questions about bonding with Dennis Potter, corpsing in Austin Powers and her multiple, multicoloured Christmas trees
Why haven’t you done more comedy? You were effortlessly hilarious in Austin Powers. Haigin88
Why, thank you! I learned from the best playing opposite Mike Myers, whom I adored. I used to get terrible giggling fits when we were shooting and had to play lots of scenes without actually looking Mike in the eye, for fear of corpsing. There’s one scene where Austin attacks Basil Exposition’s mother, bellowing to Michael York: “She’s a man, baby!” while trying to yank her wig off to show she’s a spy. But it isn’t a wig as she’s a perfectly ordinary old lady. I ruined every take by laughing and I’m ashamed to say that in the actual movie, you can see I’m glassy-eyed and smirking.

Sean Connery was associated with James Bond more than any other character, but he starred in several classics away from the franchise. Connery first played Ian Fleming's British super-spy in 1962's Dr. No, and he immediately embodied the character's suave style. Every subsequent 007 has been compared to Connery's portrayal - and whoever is cast as the next James Bond should expect the same treatment - but Connery's career was so much more than just one franchise.
After shooting to stardom as Bond, Connery capitalized on his success by choosing interesting roles in a variety of genres. Throughout his illustrious career, Connery appeared in murder mysteries, crime dramas and pulse-raising adventures. It's always an interesting study in the collective memory of generations of movie and television lovers to see odd and sometimes unbelievable shifts in their public opinion on nostalgic classics that defined their genres. 1993's The Three Musketeers was a production between MGM and Disney to adapt the classic Alexandre Dumas novel into a rebooted action-adventure film. India's “renaissance woman” Aparna Sen – actress, director, producer, fighter for women's right, diversity and ethnic & religious minorities – whose career in the film business spans over six decades, was presented with the Red Lotus Lifetime Achievement Award 2024 in Vienna. The filmmaker was unfortunately not able to fly over to recieve it, and the award was presented to the winner through the German film critic and editor of the film magazine Shomingeki, Rüdiger Tomczak.
Parama: A Journey With Aparna Sen screened at Red Lotus Asian Film Festival Vienna
Only a few months ago, Sumah Ghosh's documentary “Parama: A Journey With Aparna Sen” about the Indian helmer celebrated its world premiere in the Cinema Regained strand of IFFR, and it was only logical to include it in the repertoire of Red Lotus Asian Film Festival. Inspiration from Star Wars was key in crafting the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie's smart and thrilling battles. Fans of the darker comic book iterations of Turtles will soon enjoy an R-rated live-action movie and TV series spin-off. With nods to The Last Ronin story arc, the Tmnt franchise continues to evolve to cater to a more mature audience.
The worlds of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Star Wars seem pretty far apart, but it appears the latter was very influential on the first big screen outing of the heroes in a half-shell. The 1990 live-action Tmnt movie is still loved to this day, and, in the main, stands the test of time thanks to the incredible work of the Jim Henson Creature Shop, and the production values of the film. While obviously based on the original comic books and the cartoon series, the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie had some influences from elsewhere in pop culture. Looking back at the film in a new chat at WonderCon with Cbr's Kevin Polowy, Tmnt screenwriter Bobby Herbeck addressed his influences while sharing how Star Wars played a big part in the presentation of the movie's battle scenes.
"The first thing I did was, I watched the Four Musketeers movie with Michael York," Herbeck said of his research when writing the film. "When they were out fighting, the Four Musketeers, they'd have that smart-alecky stuff with each other, right? Or, they'd stab a guy, and have some quip to make. You know, it had that smile in it. And, the Marx Brothers were also in my head, the shenanigans."

Fritz Wepper, a German actor with a prolific TV career in his native country but known to American audiences for his funny and heartfelt performance as a German Jew is Bob Fosse’s Oscar-winning 1972 hit musical Cabaret, died Monday at a hospice facility in Munich. He was 82.
His death was announced by wife Susanne Kellermann to German newspaper Bild. Kellerman said Wepper passed away peacefully following a long illness.
A familiar presence in Germany from his role as the crime-solving Detective Sergeant Harry Klein in the long-running series Derrick (1974-98), Wepper made a lasting impression on international audiences with his performance as the charming, if insecure, aspiring gigolo Fritz Wendel of Cabaret.
In the film starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Grey, Wepper’s Fritz befriended Minnelli’s Sally Bowles and York’s Brian Roberts, while longing for the beautiful and wealthy Jewish heiress Natalia Landauer (Marisa Berenson). Secretly Jewish himself,...

Fritz Wepper, the German actor who portrayed the German Jew Fritz Wendel in Bob Fosse’s Oscar-winning musical masterpiece Cabaret and starred in his home country on the TV series Derrick and For Heaven’s Sake, has died. He was 82.
Wepper died Monday in a Munich hospice after a long illness that followed the life-threatening sepsis he suffered last year, his family announced.
An actor since childhood, Wepper landed the biggest international role of his career in Cabaret (1972), where he appeared alongside Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Helmut Griem and Joel Grey. As Wendel, he passed as a Protestant and fell in love with wealthy Jewish heiress Natalia Landauer (Marisa Berenson).
After the film’s success — it raked in eight Oscars in 1973 — Wepper turned down Hollywood offers and instead took a sidekick role as Harry Klein on the new German crime series Derrick, playing alongside Horst Tappert‘s titular homicide detective, a...

The dystopian sci-fi film "Logan's Run" is set in a supposedly idyllic future society where residents above 30 mysteriously disappear. The hedonistic metropolis is enclosed by a dome, and those who choose to explore the world outside — and the secrets that it holds — are labeled "runners." Michael York stars in the film as the titular protagonist, an undercover police officer who infiltrates the runners only to find that he, too, opposes the laws that he once worked to uphold and helps them lead an uprising.
"Logan's Run" was nominated for its cinematography and set decoration in the 1977 Academy Awards. It even received a special achievement award for its visual effects. The futuristic set and costume design were almost identical to the smash-hit sci-fi adventure film "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope," which was released the following year. It's possible that "Star Wars" even drew inspiration from the 1976 film. However,...

A whole generation of moviegoers may know Michael York from the Austin Powers movies, but his career goes all the way back to the swingin’ ’60s, when he was in a couple of Franco Zeffirelli’s Shakespeare films. One of the early highlights of his career was 1972’s Cabaret, a film version of the 1966 Broadway play. The movie, which won eight of the 10 Academy Awards for which it was nominated (it lost the Best Picture award to The Godfather), still manages to find new audiences more than five decades later. We’ve spoken to York about the film many times over the years, and he credits the movie’s Oscar-winning director, Bob Fosse, with making a film that has stood the test of time. Alice Walker published her acclaimed novel “The Color Purple” in 1982. It sold five million copies; Walker became the first Black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize and she also received the National Book Club Award. Three years later, Steven Spielberg directed the lauded film version which made stars out of Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover. It earned 11 Oscar nominations. The story revolves around a young woman who suffers abuse from her father and husband for four decades until she finds her own identity. Not exactly the stuff of a Broadway musical.
But the 2005 tuner version received strong reviews, ran 910 performances and earned ten Tony nominations, winning best actress for Lachanze. The 2015 production picked up two Tonys for best revival and actress for Cynthia Erivo. The movie musical version opened strong Christmas Day with $18 million and is a strong contender in several Oscar categories especially for Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks.

The Austin Powers franchise consists of three movies that are both successful at the box office and critically acclaimed, with the series revolving around the character Austin Powers and his rivalry with Dr. Evil. Mike Myers is at the center of the franchise, having written, produced, and starred in all three films. He was inspired to create the character of Austin Powers while listening to "The Look of Love" by Burt Bacharach. Fans can watch the Austin Powers movies in either release order or chronological order, with the first movie premiering in 1997 and the third and final movie released in 2002. Despite rumors of a fourth film, the trilogy is seen as a suitable end to the series.
The Austin Powers franchise began in the late 1990s and would go on to spawn two successful movies, both at the box office and with critics and audiences, and there is an order...

The Simpsons annual Halloween special Treehouse of Horror is as iconic as the beloved animated series itself. With a trio of tales, often parodying famous horror movies, it's a television holiday event that has no equal. People may watch the New Year's Eve ball drop out of obligation, but Treehouse of Horror is a passion.
After 34 episodes times three segments, over 100 horror, sci-fi, and fantasy moves have received the snarky Simpsons send up. King Arthur adaptations have been plentiful and varied, with actors like Clive Owen, Michael York, and Sean Connery leaving their mark on the character. Some adaptations have taken a more serious approach to the Arthur legend, like "Camelot," while others, like "A Knight in Camelot," went for a more comedic and lighthearted tone. The recent Netflix show "Cursed" offers a fresh perspective on the myth, with Devon Terrell bringing charisma to his portrayal of Arthur, while Iain De Caestecker's Arthur in "The Winter King" is portrayed as a commanding figure in a divided Britain.
The legend of King Arthur has been recounted and reinvented countless times for movies and TV shows, with many actors bringing their own unique take on the mythic character. A quick scan of adaptations of the Arthur story reveals a near-bottomless well of films, shows, novels, comics and more. These have ranged from some straightforward retellings to odder takes,...

The Olivier Award-winning West End revival of Cabaret is coming to Broadway: Producers announced that the acclaimed musical will begin previews at the August Wilson Theater in spring 2024.
Not confirmed: Whether the West End production’s original 2021 stars Eddie Redmayne (as the Emcee) or Jessie Buckley (as Sally Bowles) will make the move. Redmayne’s participation, in particular, has been widely speculated, prompted in part by his participation in this year’s Tony Awards tribute to Cabaret composer John Kander and actor Joel Grey, who played the Emcee in the original Broadway production as well as the 1972 movie version.
The West End revival – officially titled Cabaret At The Kit Kat Club – swept the 2022 Olivier Awards with seven wins including Best Musical Revival, Best Actor and Actress in a Musical (Redmayne and Buckley), and Best Director (Rebecca Frecknall). Supporting Actor and Actress in a Musical awards went to Elliot Levey and Liza Sadovy.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves star Hugh Grant reveals the one movie he’d like to erase from his filmography. A romantic-comedy superstar thanks to hit films like Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill and Love Actually, Grant is currently making the promotional rounds behind his new film Dungeons & Dragons, the sword-and-sorcery epic based on the famed tabletop role-playing game. In D&d: Honor Among Thieves, Grant plays Forge Fitzwilliam, a former roguish con artist who has become a lord and acquired great wealth.
It remains to be seen whether Forge Fitzwilliam goes down in history as one of Grant’s best roles, but so far the actor has no reason to be ashamed of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, unlike one movie from his past that the actor has revealed he would like to erase from his IMDb profile.

Meeting at Yale in season 4, Paris Geller (Liza Weil) and Doyle McMaster (Danny Strong) are an entertaining and quirky couple on Gilmore Girls, and their relationship changes both of their lives. Although Paris is known as a passionate and brash character whose competitive streak makes it hard for her to make friends, she does show a softer side during these love stories.

Franco Zeffirelli apprenticed to Luchino Visconti, stage directed operas and directed several movie hits, the biggest of which was this exuberant, attractive Shakespeare adaptation, filmed like an opera with sumptuous sets and sunswept Italian locations. The novelty for 1968 was casting the Bard’s star-crossed young lovers with actual teenagers. Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting are attractive kids directed to give spirited performances; the critics may have had mixed reactions but the public received the film well. If memory serves, Criterion’s new remaster looks better than Paramount’s original release prints.

Later in life, Raquel Welch would occasionally acknowledge that Richard Lester’s The Three Musketeers (1973) and The Four Musketeers (1974) provided her with the best reviews of her career. And it’s hard to argue. Prior to those successful, and slyly subversive, reworkings of Alexandre Dumas’ most famous novel, Welch was known as the sex symbol of the ’60s. She was the redhead in the fur bikini of One Million Years B.C. (1966); the poster image that was so iconic her figure became the primary sales pitch for a movie about dinosaurs!
The bombshell persona opened the doors of Hollywood, but for a woman who was already a mother of two at the time and had to change her name to hide her Bolivian heritage, it was a mirage. She ran with it throughout the ‘60s, leaving a legacy that lingered on in movies which ranged from The Shawshank Redemption (1994) to Belfast...

While The Simpsons season 34 featured 2 Treehouse of Horror Halloween specials, this unusual rule break resulted in the season featuring no Christmas episode. The Simpsons has seemingly thrown away the show’s rule book in season 34. Each new episode is playing with ideas that even a series as anarchic as The Simpsons usually steered clear of until this point, to mixed results.
The most recent episode set in the future saw season 34 retcon Lisa and Milhouse’s reliable Simpsons future, and the show followed this with another surprise. Season 34 is set to not feature a Christmas special, even though The Simpsons aired numerous holiday episodes in recent seasons. However, as there were multiple Christmas specials in The Simpsons seasons 31 and 32, it is easy to see why season 34 changed this. Season 34 was also the first season of The Simpsons to feature two Treehouse of Horror Halloween episodes, meaning that the long-running cartoon...

To anyone in their 20s, Michael Anderson's 1976 sci-fi film "Logan's Run" remains a pop culture fulcrum of anxiety. Based on the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson, "Logan's Run" is set in the distant future of 2274 where the human population has been gathered in high-tech, dome-enclosed living facilities where their every wish is granted by an elaborate computer system. Everyone is young and attractive, and sex partners of any gender identity can be dialed up on a local roulette system.
All citizens are equipped with a crystal in the palm of their hands. When they turn 30, the crystal begins glowing red, and the citizen in question must undergo a bleak ritual called Carousel. No one survives Carousel. If someone attempts to flee when their time is up — if they become a Runner — they are hunted down by local police called Sandmen. This black comedy has fallen by the wayside since its release in 1970 and considering its rich pedigree, it deserves another look. Directed by Harold Prince and written by Hugh Wheeler, Angela Lansbury and Michael York play two social climbers ready to marry or murder anyone to get what they want. John Simon hated the film, so that’s another plus in its favor.

Angela Lansbury, the London-born actress whose career spanned eight decades and included hits in film (“The Manchurian Candidate”), TV and theater (“Mame” and “Sweeney Todd”), has died at age 96.
Her family announced her death, saying she died early Tuesday morning “peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles.”
A private family ceremony will be held at a date to be determined for Lansbury, who would have turned 97 on Sunday.
One of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Lansbury first rose to fame as an MGM player who nabbed Academy Award nominations for her first films roles, in 1944’s “Gaslight” and 1945’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray.”

Dr. Evil. Fembots. Mini-Me. You’re probably a fan of the Austin Powers movies if these names mean anything. The films were produced and written by Mike Myers, who also starred as the title character and Dr. Evil.
The franchise parodies numerous films and characters, including the James Bond series and Jason King. It also incorporates various other elements of popular culture, following a British spy’s quest to bring his nemesis down.
The movies are filled with humor, action, and references to pop culture, making them timeless classics. If you want to watch the Austin Powers movies in order, you’ve come to the right place. There are three Austin Powers Movies; the first film in the Austin Powers series was produced by Mike Myers, Demi Moore, Jennifer Todd, and Suzanne Todd. However, the last two Austin Powers films were also made by John S. Lyons and Eric McLeod.

It’s a funny world we live in when a single bit of possible casting news can turn Film Twitter on its head. Overnight, the fans of 2019’s Joker and those more skeptical toward Todd Phillips making a sequel titled Joker: Folie à Deux switched places when it was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that Lady Gaga is in talks to play Dr. Harleen Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn… and that the movie is going to be a musical.
Suddenly those of us who were ambivalent toward the prospect of more Scorsese allusions in murderous clown makeup sat up and took notice while those eager for more of the same were left befuddled. A musical?! Sure! Why not?! Recall that in the climax of the first Joker, Joaquin Phoenix’s titular character is literally dancing to music, if only in his own head, while winding himself up to shoot Robert De Niro on live television.
