The Baby in the Basket review – devilish convent horror is low-budget nun fun
Hattie Jacques and Sidney James in Carry on Loving (1970)
The spawn of Satan raises hell at a Scottish nunnery in this retro-styled British fright fest

This cheap-as-chips British horror concerning demented nuns is risible in the extreme, but there’s something about its willingness to commit to the bit that’s sort of admirable. Plus, there’s a faintly amusing retro vibe that harks back not just to low-budget 1970s horror of yore, but also to the so-called “quota quickies” from the 1930s onwards, British film fare made by the yard.

Set during the second world war on an island off the coast of Scotland, the film takes place almost entirely within the confines of a nunnery called St Augustine’s. That said, there’s an opening sequence where a nun is pursued by a wolf outside, a beast so happy to be playing with the actor his tail is up and wagging the whole time – he looks about as menacing as a cockapoo.

Image
Stars: Maryam d’Abo, Elle O’Hara, Amber Doig-Thorne, Michaela Longden, Lisa Riesner, Annabelle Lanyon, Paul Barber | Written by Nathan Shepka, Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Nathan Shepka, Andy Crane

[Disclaimer: Nerdly have been involved with The Baby in the Basket behind the scenes for some time now, with our own Phil and Kevin credited as Co-Executive Producers on the film. However… the site and their involvement have had No bearing on the outcome of this review!]

The Baby in the Basket takes its name from one of the best-known stories from the Bible, the tale of Moses being placed in a basket and sent adrift on the Nile, only to be discovered and adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter. However, in this eerie tale, the child left in a basket on the doorstep of St. Augustine’s convent may be anything but divine.

Set in 1942, during the height of World War II, the film takes place on a remote...

Do You Remember These 30+ USA Network Original Horror Movies Released from 1989-2004?
Image
Before USA Network became series-focused, the cable channel delivered a steady stream of weekly original movies. Many of which were produced by McA (now NBCUniversal). And during this era — between the late 1980s and early 2000s — USA offered a variety of genres; action and suspense were the most common, but horror also came up from time to time.

Especially around Halloween.

USA Network is no longer in the business of airing these “World Premiere Movies,” horror or otherwise, and there haven’t been great strides to bring all of them to streaming or modern home video. However, the horror entries certainly have their merits as well as fans.

See if you can remember these original movies from USA Network’s horror history.

You Only Love Thrice: How Many Times James Bond Has Actually Fallen In Love
Image
The James Bond franchise has seen the titular spy romance many women, but he hasn't fallen in love all that often. There had never really been a movie franchise on the scale of the Bond movies when they first arrived. The combination of beautiful people, big action setpieces and exotic locales drew in audiences, and in the years that followed, other blockbusters - most notably the Indiana Jones franchise - would borrow liberally from its formula. The series is also famous for its Bond women, where each entry would see 007 romancing a new love interest.

In the early days of the James Bond movies - some notable exceptions aside - these characters tended to be underdeveloped and were often included to be seduced or rescued. The Daniel Craig Bond movies saw a notable shift in this area, with his 007 tending to develop more serious emotional connections. Quantum Of Solace is...

10 Underrated James Bond Movies That Deserve More Respect
Image
"On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is a movie that used to be a punchline, and the name of its star, George Lazenby, a joke. Back in the '80s, there were only two "real" choices for best Bond, and they were Roger Moore or Sean Connery. Bringing in Lazenby was like suggesting that Captain Decker could be up to Kirk or Picard standards on "Star Trek." Yet, over the years, and as more Bond films have been released, suddenly it's gaining respect again. By Rotten Tomatoes rankings, it's even a top 10 film!

Part of that reassessment is that Bond no longer feels like a choice between macho Sean Connery and knowingly corny Roger Moore. We've Seen Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Dalton, and Daniel Craig take a crack, and Lazenby's mix of Connery machismo with a bit of Moore-like humor (and a hint of tragedy) now falls better on a spectrum than into a binary.

Barbara Broccoli Says Next James Bond Film Is Two Years Away From Production: “We’re Reinventing Him”
Image
Exclusive: James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has revealed that it will be “at least two years“ before the next 007 movie begins filming and that the task of finding an actor to replace Daniel Craig hasn’t begun “because it’s a reinvention of Bond.”

Speaking to us at a star-studded private event in central London to honor Broccoli and her brother Michael G. Wilson for their BFI Fellowships, Broccoli wouldn’t be drawn on who would play Bond next but did offer an update on the decision-making process.

“Nobody’s in the running,” she disclosed. “We’re working out where to go with him, we’re talking that through. There isn’t a script and we can’t come up with one until we decide how we’re going to approach the next film because, really, it’s a reinvention of Bond. We’re reinventing who he is and that takes time.

1987: The Living Daylights and “Strong Female Characters”
Image
1987 is our year of the month. Here's Deborah Lipp...

One of the unusual things about 1987 is that three of the ten top-grossing films of the year are female-centric. Perhaps two of those films—Moonstruck (about which I’ve written here ) and The Witches of Eastwick—are more correctly called “Cher-centric.” Perhaps the force of nature that is Cher is what made the difference here? (More on her later in a different article). Regardless, 1986 and 1988 are both more typically Hollywood, which is to say, more male.

And speaking of male-centric movies, let’s talk about James Bond. 1987 is the year of The Living Daylights, the first Timothy Dalton Bond movie, and the mid-point of a nadir for Bond box office. Specifically, though, let’s talk about the “Bond girl” of The Living Daylights, Kara Milovy, played by Maryam d’Abo...

Lesley Manville, Oscar nominated for “Phantom Thread,” will take over from Helena Bonham-Carter in the role of Princess Margaret in the final season of Netflix series “The Crown,” winner of several Emmys.

“I could not be happier to be playing Princess Margaret,” Manville said in a quote on “The Crown” Twitter feed. “The baton is being passed on from two formidable actresses and I really don’t want to let the side down. Furthermore to play siblings with my dear friend Imelda Staunton will be nothing short of a complete joy.”

Staunton was announced in the role of Queen Elizabeth II in January, replacing Olivia Coleman. Vanessa Kirby played Princess Margaret, the Queen’s younger sister, in the first two seasons, before Bonham-Carter took over in the third.

Sean Connery and Ursula Andress in Dr. No (1962)
See the world Secret Agent Style – The Travels of James Bond
Sean Connery and Ursula Andress in Dr. No (1962)
In the days of yore when passports were rubber-stamped at the airport, few people could boast such an eclectic collection of foreign ambassadorial imprints as James Bond, secret agent, cocktail connoisseur and amasser of innumerable air miles. A recent study concluded that since 1962, Bond had visited 49 countries, several of them repeat visits.

When the series first began with Dr. No in the early sixties, the vast majority of the cinemagoers in the audience could scarcely dream of such widespread globetrotting. In the pre-package holidays era, the idea of jetting off to Japan and stopping off at Morocco on the way home, via Paris was pure fantasy unless you were either a multi-millionaire or Alan Whicker.

The glamorous travelogue aspect of the Bond films were an intrinsic part of its appeal. Even now, despite the comparatively inexpensive nature of world travel, a Bond movie is always a determinedly international affair. Often,...

Tonight's Double-0 MovieMovie: The Living Daylights Starring Timothy Dalton
"This is a mission, not a fancy-dress ball."

After 1985's A View to a Kill, the search was on for an actor to replace Roger Moore as James Bond, and both Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan were up for the part. As it turned out, both would eventually play 007, but Dalton took over first when Brosnan wasn't able to leave his contract for the TV show Remington Steele.

Based on a short story by Ian Fleming, The Living Daylights was the first of two Bond movies featuring Dalton, and the most well-reviewed of the two. The Living Daylights finds Bond assigned to aid a Soviet defector (Jeroen Krabbe), and turns to his cellist girlfriend (Maryam D'Abo) after he is abducted again. The movie not only returned to franchise to financial success, but brought Bond back behind the wheel of an Aston Martin, the signature vehicle which was lost in the Moore era.

Top 10 Hottest Bond Girls
"Miss Anders... I didn’t recognize you with your clothes on."

It's been 50 years this month since James Bond first made the leap from the printed page to the silver screen with the release of Dr. No in theaters. Six different actors — Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig — have played Ian Fleming's timeless character over the decades and, while his spy gadgets and cars may change, you can always count on Bond to surround himself with beautiful, resourceful, and downright deadly women.

Considering February is Bond Month on Reelz, we thought this would be a great time to look back at the sexy women who have helped to make James Bond the cultural icon of masculinity he has become. Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival 2012 opens today.
I, Anna director Barnaby Southcombe and celebrated arthouse maverick Jack Bond will be among the guests at the sixth annual Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival, which opens today. With screenings in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, the festival sets out to showcase great films that can change attitudes about mental health issues, and it's theme this year is 'walk in my shoes'.

The festival will provide an early opportunity for Scots to see I, Anna, starring Gabriel Byrne and Charlotte Rampling, which will also be shown at the upcoming London Film Festival. Other highlights include outré science fiction film Anti-Clock and Hugh Hudson's remarkable, very personal documentary Rupture: Living With My Broken Brain, a portrait of his former Bond girl wife Maryam D'Abo. There will be another chance to see homegrown favourite The Angels' Share and an opportunity to preview the Northern Lights Film Project's unique documentary work,...

The children of the James Bond producers play happy families at the Everything or Nothing premiere, while a student animator prepares to kickstart the London film festival

Family Bond

The Broccolis and the Saltzmans used to play together. So Monday night was a bit of a reunion as the children of the James Bond producers "Cubby" Broccoli and Harry Saltzman gathered again at the premiere of Everything or Nothing, Stevan Riley's doc on the Bond phenomenon.

Despite the squabbles chronicled in the greatly enjoyable documentary, relations are now such that families even got together on stage for an emotional Q&A afterwards. Steven Saltzman, Harry's son, now living in Monaco, could hardly contain his thrill at finally getting to tell his dad's story, although there's more beside that thread in Riley's film. "The thing that nobody knows is that Harry was a spy himself," he told me. "So here was this man,...

My favourite Bond film: The Living Daylights | Les Roopanarine
Timothy Dalton's monogamous, deadpan 007 brings a more nuanced interpretation to the central character, whose relationships evolve in ways rarely seen in the earlier films

With apologies to Vesper Lynd, if the only thing left of The Living Daylights was Maryam d'Abo's smile and the taut early sequence that culminates with Timothy Dalton's 007 deliberately missing a shot at cellist turned sniper Kara Milovy, it would still be my favourite Bond film.

Dalton, the antithesis of his wisecracking predecessor Roger Moore, promised on taking up the tux to approach Bond with "a sense of responsibility to the work of Ian Fleming". It was a comment that said much about how far the series had strayed from its roots. Happily, though, Dalton was true to his word; a few almost unbearably tense minutes, based on the short story from which The Living Daylights takes its title, was all it took...

D'Abo Pays Tribute To Journalist Colvin
Maryam d'Abo in The Living Daylights (1987)
Former Bond girl Maryam D'Abo has paid tribute to famed war correspondent Marie Colvin, who died in a blast in Syria on Wednesday.

The Living Daylights actress is a member of the same London social club where Colvin spent time during her stays in the city, and the pair became friends.

Colvin, of Britain's Sunday Times, and freelance French photojournalist Remi Ochlik were killed on Wednesday after a shell hit the house where they were staying in the Syrian city of Homs, while covering the bloody uprising in the country.

D'Abo, who last saw Colvin in London last month prior to her trip to Syria, has spoken out to honour the journalist, praising her as a "real woman's woman".

The actress tells London's Evening Standard, "She was always there. She was totally straightforward - there was no manipulation with Marie, she was a real woman's woman. I call her a hippy - meaning she had no ulterior motivations...

"I texted her (recently) and I emailed her. I knew she was in Syria and I was terrified. I said, 'Be careful, be safe', but what can you say? In Libya, she replied to me a lot, but she didn't in Syria."...

Dorian Gray - Images
Oliver Parker (St. Trinian's - remake) directs this adaption of Oscar Wilde's classic tale "The Picture of Dorian Gray".

After having his portrait painted by the artist Basil Hallward (Ben Chaplin) Dorian Gray (Ben Barnes) no longer seems to be effected by the ravages of time. However the painting is a different story, Dorian's debauchery is reflected in the ever increasing ugliness of the painting.

Dorian Gray stars Colin Firth, Ben Barnes, Rachel Hurd-Wood, Maryam d'Abo, Emilia Fox,Caroline Goodall and Ben Chaplin

Maryam d'Abo in The Living Daylights (1987)
D'Abo Cheated Death After Haemorrhage
Maryam d'Abo in The Living Daylights (1987)
Former Bond girl Maryam D'Abo almost died when she suffered a horrifying brain haemorrhage during a workout.

The actress, who appeared alongside Timothy Dalton in 1987 blockbuster The Living Daylights, was exercising at a friend's house in Los Angeles when she suddenly collapsed in agony.

She was found sprawled semi-conscious on the kitchen floor, and doctors later diagnosed a brain aneurysm.

D'Abo's collapse came in 2006 after she suffered months of piercing headaches.

She says, "Although I still felt a little off colour, I decided to exercise anyway... As I started to build up speed, suddenly a wave of heat swept through my head, and I began to feel like everything was in slow motion.

"I went completely deaf, and then what felt like an electric thunderstorm exploded in my head. I fell off the machine screaming with pain. Excruciating, sharp strikes of lightning zapped my brain - it lasted five minutes but felt like an eternity.

"It was the worst headache of my life but somehow I staggered to the main house, screaming for help... As I lay on the kitchen floor, having convulsions, I felt like my brain was going to explode."

Doctors initially feared the star - married to British film director Hugh Hudson - had meningitis. But just days later tests revealed she had suffered a brain haemorrhage and needed emergency surgery to save her life.

D'Abo adds, "When I woke up after the surgery, Hugh appeared in the doorway, having flown straight from the U.K., looking terrified. I had a nine-inch scar on my temple, extensive facial swellings and a hole in my skull. I was lucky to be alive."...
