‘High Society’ 4K Uhd Review (Warner Archive)
Image
Stars: Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, John Lund, Frank Sinatra, Celeste Holm, Louis Armstrong | Written by John Patrick, Philip Barry | Directed by Charles Walters

In 1940, a trio of future Hollywood Legends would come together to put to screen a romantic comedy that would be forever regarded as one of the greatest romcoms ever. Of course, I am talking about The Philadelphia Story. Just a short 16 years later, in 1956, MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) decided to remake the classic, but with an interesting twist. They decided to hire two of the most popular crooners and a future princess and rename the films High Society.

Next year (2026), High Society will be celebrating its 70th anniversary. But before we get to that date, Warner Archive Collection have restored and released this classic musical on 4k/Blu-ray combo pack.

Legendary Louis Armstrong as himself, plays his trumpet and narrates in prose and song the peccadillos of his songwriter friend C.

It sees Reilly passionately acting out lyrics from the song like, “I realize that you have tried and tried and are just about ready to give up/ But I got good news for you/ God has spoken to my mind and told me to tell you/ To get moving in the right direction for a change.”

According to a press release, Reilly is a longtime friend of White’s, who, upon hearing “Archbishop Harold Holmes,” pitched the veteran rocker on playing the titular character in the visual treatment for the song. White then gave Reilly and Trejo...

Vernon Reid on Why Sly and the Family Stone Were the Greatest American Band
Image
In the wake of Sly Stone’s death at age 82, Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid made the case for why Sly and the Family Stone deserve a place at the top of the canon of American bands. Here it is, in his own words.

I would make the argument that there isn’t a band of greater import. In terms of impact and the kind of shift they created, there isn’t a greater American band. Everything was different after they appeared. Their influence is obvious and very, very subtle.

Image
After returning from the Blue Origin flight, popstar Katy Perry describes herself as “a human piñata” after being mocked online with endless memes.

Perry has recently been criticized for her part in Jeff Bezos’s all-female Blue Origin space flight, during which she sang Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” and held up a setlist for her new tour to an in-flight camera. She and the rest of the crew were accused of being “tone deaf” for joining an expensive trip during economic struggle.

Her latest tour has also become the subject of mockery, with Perry appearing to put on a series of strange space-themed performances. The online backlash appears to have been enough for Perry to call out her critics emotionally.

Perry posted a lengthy message after dedicated Brazilian fans paid for a digital billboard in New York’s Times Square for 24 hours to declare their support. The billboard read,...

Tony Awards Nominations: Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal’s ‘Othello’ Shut Out Despite Strong Ticket Sales
Image
Othello, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington, was entirely shut out of the 2025 Tony Award nominations.

While the play received mostly mixed reviews, it has been drawing crowds on Broadway and has frequently had the most expensive average ticket price in the industry, at $374.17 last week.

The new musical Redwood, starring Idina Menzel, was also entirely shut out of the Tony nominations, as was the musical The Last Five Years, starring Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren. McNeal, led by Robert Downey Jr. in his Broadway debut, did not receive any Tony nominations.

Though George Clooney got his first Tony Award nomination for his role in Good Night, and Good Luck, the play, which he co-wrote, did not receive a nod for best play, even as it has also been the highest grossing production on Broadway for the past several weeks.

Similarly, the celebrity-driven Glengarry Glen Ross did not get a...

Gayle King Rejects Criticism Of Her Blue Origin Space Trip: ‘There’s Nothing Frivolous About What We Did!’
Image
TV anchor Gayle King called out critics who described her Blue Origin rocket trip as a “freebie space ride.”

“It’s called a flight or a journey. A ‘ride’ implies something frivolous or lighthearted; there’s nothing frivolous about what we did,” she said.

“They call it a ride, which I find very irritating,” King said of the day after the 11-minute all-women trip. Critics claimed that the suborbital flight had no real scientific purpose and was just a publicity stunt for Jeff Bezos’ space company, Blue Origin.

The trip has received significant backlash on social media.

Model Emily Ratajkowski said in a recent TikTok post, “That space mission this morning? That’s end-time s—; this is beyond parody.” Ratajowski continued to criticize the trip by calling out the company for “single-handedly destroying the planet.”

King spoke with fellow crewmate, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, on CBS Mornings. “There...

Katy Perry Blasts Off Into Space During Successful Blue Origin Launch

Pop superstar Katy Perry and “CBS Mornings” anchor Gayle King were among the six passengers Monday on an all-female voyage into to the edge of space via Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space travel business.

Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket soared into space after blastoff from the company’s West Texas launch facility at 9:30 a.m. Et on Monday.

The Perfect Find: Watch The First 5 Minutes of New Gabrielle Union Rom-Com
Image
The opening credits of The Perfect Find are straight out of a fashion fever dream. Set to the Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday classic “You Can’t Lose a Broken Heart,” the sequence — which you can watch above only on Tudum — is an animated collage blending New York City, magazine covers and old Hollywood as it introduces you to Gabrielle Union’s glamorous “It” girl, Jenna Jones.

“I have a big love for vintage Black glamour [and] vintage Black Hollywood,” director Numa Perrier tells Tudum about anchoring the film in nostalgic rom-com aesthetics. “Jenna is a fan of classic films, so I was really intentional about wanting to bring those films into our film.”

And indeed, Jenna’s life seems especially charmed as we witness her meteoric rise as half of the mythical power couple known as “BriJenna” alongside real estate mogul Brian (D.B. Woodside). But the illusion shatters when their...

Saturday Night Live Pays Tribute to Val Kilmer After Batman Forever Star's Death
Image
Saturday Night Live paid tribute to Val Kilmer following the Batman Forever star's death last week. The NBC sketch show briefly honored Kilmer during an episode hosted by Jack Black on Saturday (April 5).

A memorial graphic aired before Saturday's final segment, featuring a stylized promo image of Kilmer from his SNL hosting debut on December 9, 2000. One of the most notable moments from that season 26 instalment was an It's a Wonderful Life-themed monologue where Kilmer learned about the disastrous consequences if he'd have turned down hosting the show.

Saturday Night Live Honors the Late Val Kilmer

Kilmer also reprized his role as Jim Morrison from 1991's The Doors for a Behind the Music parody where Morrison formed a psychedelic band in heaven, called The Great Frog Society, with fellow deceased musicians Janis Joplin (Molly Shannon), Jimi Hendrix (Jerry Minor), Keith Moon (Horatio Sanz), Buddy Holly (Jimmy Fallon) and Louis Armstrong...

Val Kilmer Spoofed ‘Top Gun,’ ‘The Doors’ and Himself When He Hosted ‘SNL’
Image
Val Kilmer wasn’t always the easiest actor to work with. His painstaking attention to detail and immersion into his characters — everyone had to call him “Jim” on the set of The Doors — famously got on the nerves of his films’ cast and crew. But just because he was serious about his work doesn’t mean he took himself seriously. When he hosted Saturday Night Live in 2000, Kilmer proved to have a great sense of humor about his most famous roles.

Take Iceman, the cocky aviator who Kilmer played in both Top Gun and its 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. He took a third crack at the character on SNL, reimagining his iconic role as a gone-to-seed commercial airline pilot still trying to relive his glory days.

@huggyattack

Iceman: The Later Years chronicles the character’s softball-dad years, copiloting a 727 full of tourists but wishing he was still breaking speed records.

Tom Hardy's 'Capone' Deserved Better Than its 40% Rt Score
Image
After the disastrous critical and audience reception of 2015's Fantastic Four, writer/director Josh Trank found himself in an inenviable position. At odds with 20th Century Fox after pinning the blame for the film's failure on studio meddling, his blockbuster prospects began to dry up, with a planned Star Wars project getting canceled. Trank claimed it was for personal reasons, but plenty in Hollywood speculated that the failure of Fantastic Four had something to do with it. Whatever the reason, the once promising upstart indie director was at something of a crossroads.

Rather than try and get back in the studio system's good graces, Trank instead poured himself into a passion project about the final days of famed mobster Al Capone, with Tom Hardy attached to star. Originally titled Fonzo after Capone's nickname, the title was later changed to Capone, and the film finally saw release in May 2020. Sadly,...

Since then, he’s also overseen the expansion of Kino Lorber’s streaming platform, Kino Film Collection, which is available on Amazon.

In a voiceover, the vice president can be heard saying, “In times when we’re dealing with so much in the world, we have to find those moments that are about joy, and shining — you know, as we say, shining a light in moments of darkness. And knowing that that light comes from within as well as from without, and seeing that light in each other. You guys are doing all of that.” (Credit: @awonderfulworldbway via Storyful)

The Best Music Biopic Of All Time, According To IMDb
Image
We live in an age of biopics, and musicians are an unusually common theme that dominates that genre. In recent years, we've seen biographical dramatizations of Elton John ("Rocket Man"), Elvis Presley ("Elvis"), and Amy Winehouse ("Back to Black"). As of this writing, the most recent entry to the musical biopic genre is "A Complete Unknown," where Timothée Chalamet channels what can only be described as a "pretty good" iteration of Bob Dylan. The cascade of musically-infused biographies won't slow down any time soon, either. We've got projects on Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Louis Armstrong, and The Beatles (among many others) on tap for the next few years.

The barrage of pop chart biopics begs the question, which one is the best? Is there a biopic of a musician that is considered better than all the rest? The answer, according to IMDb, is yes. In fact, there is one film...

Tony Talk: Musicals ‘Gypsy,’ ‘Maybe Happy Ending,’ and ‘Sunset Blvd’ look strong at midpoint of Broadway season
Image
Welcome to Tony Talk, a column in which Gold Derby contributors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan offer Tony Awards analysis. With only four months to go until the 2025 nominations are announced, we’ve reconvened for a retrospective on the musicals from the first half of the Broadway season, during which a total of nine new works and revivals have bowed out of the anticipated 21 total that will be eligible.

David Buchanan: Hey, Sam! It’s hard to believe, but we’re less than four months away from the 2025 Tony Awards nominations. While the Broadway season has been flying by, we’ve already seen five new musicals and four musical revivals open, including some truly first-rate productions. How do you think the competition for the top category of Best Musical has been shaking out so far?

Sam Eckmann: David, at some point in November I had to double-check my calendar to...

Jonathan Rosenbaum on the 6,000-Film DVD Collection He Sold to a Pediatrician, ‘The Brutalist,’ and His New Book
Image
“In Dreams Begin Responsibilities” is the title of a new Jonathan Rosenbaum reader, culminating nearly six decades of never-before-compiled writing on film, jazz, and literature. The legendary Chicago-based film critic known for iconoclastic takes on the canon has been published everywhere from Cahiers du Cinéma to Film Comment, Sight and Sound, and, of course, the Chicago Reader, where he succeeded Dave Kehr as head critic starting in 1987. He retired from that post in 2008.

Rosenbaum, turning 82 this February, is in conversation this weekend at New York’s Metrograph with filmmaker (and friend) Michael Almereyda. They’ll discuss Serbian director Dušan Makavejev’s cult classic, erotically charged political comedy “W.R.: Mysteries of the Organism” (1971), controversial for its montage throughline between sexual liberation and communist revolution, as well as the wild corporate satire “Giants and Toys” (1958) from Yasuzō Masumura. Rosenbaum has long championed the sociopolitically charged works of the Japanese director, who trained under Visconti,...

9 Best Apple TV+ Movies to Watch While They’re Free
Image
This weekend, Apple TV+ is free.

It’s a brilliant marketing move and reminds us of the time when, back when Disney Channel was a premium cable channel, they would do special free weekends, complete with cutaways to a fake call center to see people signing up in real time.

And while there might not be hosted segments previewing the channel’s upcoming programs, you have free reign over all of Apple TV+ – including their original film library.

To that end, we chose nine movies that you should definitely check out during the free preview weekend, everything from documentaries about the Beastie Boys to new classics from Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott to a movie about the formation of “Tetris” (yes really).

Apple “Beastie Boys Story”

Apple TV+ has a robust lineup of music documentaries, with Todd Haynes’ “The Velvet Underground,” plus docs dedicated to Billie Eilish, Bruce Springsteen, Louis Armstrong and Selena Gomez.

Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat Review: The Jazz of Political Struggle
Image
A nonlinear narrative structure is used in “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat,” a documentary by Belgian director Johan Grimonprez that goes beyond conventional storytelling. The film is mostly about the sad killing of Patrice Lumumba, who was the first Prime Minister of the newly independent Democratic Republic of the Congo. It does this while incorporating the lively jazz music that defined a time.

Grimonprez’s narrative style echoes the playful experimentation of the French New Wave. He invites us to dance across time and perspectives, much like Godard or Truffaut, by expertly fusing old footage, live music, and sharp political commentary. This structure encourages a deeper reflection on the cyclical nature of history and its ongoing effects, which also keeps viewers interested.

The film’s editing and sound design show off its professional skills. As you switch between different types of media, you get a full vocal and visual experience.

How Coldplay Became Bigger, Happier, and More ‘Coldplay’ Than Ever

The night sky over New Zealand is wide and wondrous, inky and vast. It’s the type of sky that broadcasts Earth’s infinitesimal place in the infinite cosmos. The type of sky that fills one with awe at the beauty and mystery of existence. The type that brings to mind how, from some vantage point in some far-off pocket of space, human difference simply disappears and we all appear as one, floating in harmony on our beautiful blue and green marble.

And so it is fitting that one night in mid-November,...

‘Earth Abides’ Episode 3 Recap & Ending Explained: Is Ish Dead Or Alive?
Image
In episode 2 of Earth Abides, Ish found another survivor named Emma. One thing led to another, and Emma not only moved in with Ish but the two ended up having a baby together. While they were doing all that, the rats started an uprising and tried to take over the city. Ish pulled all the stops to keep him and his family from turning into rat food. Lucky, the dog, got injured, but he lived to tell the tale. Eventually, the cats decided that enough was enough, and they ate up all the rats in existence, thereby making America, or at least Ish’s locality, rat-free. If you think that subplot is a metaphor for something, do let me know in the comments. Anyway, for some godforsaken reason, Emma decided to advertise the location of her and Ish’s home because they wanted to help out any other survivors who were out there.

10 Classic 1960s Movies That Were Ahead Of Their Time
Image
The 1960s were a period of tumult and change across the world, and this was definitely echoed in iconic art that was created during the decade. From music, to fashion, to film and television, artists pushed the boundaries and limits of their disciplines by exploring controversial themes and experimenting with new techniques to comment on them, in the process.

Among these, film was one of the most adventurous, with several projects from this decade inspiring the future generation of filmmakers. Several classic films of the 1960s have held up to today's standards. In fact, many pioneered the method for much of modern film. For example, Stanley Kramer's Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, discussed important societal issues of race and interracial relationships, while artistic French new wave movies like The Umbrella's of Cherbourg, used technicolor and experimental cinematography to expand the visual capabilities of film. In these instances, these 1960s...

Quick Links Disney Fell Out With Louis Prima After The Jungle Book Disney Created a New Character to Replace King Louie in House of Mouse Christopher Walken Voiced King Louie in Disneys Live-Action Jungle Book

Before Disney had a falling out with Robin Williams over the use of his celebrity in promoting Aladdin (1992), another star turned his back on the studio. Disney's The Jungle Book (1967) featured the raucous character of King Louie. An orangutan living in the jungle who wants desperately to know how humans create fire. He sings the iconic song "I Wan'na Be Like You" along with Baloo the Bear -- voiced by Phil Harris. Created for the Disney film, the character of King Louie was named after his voice actor, Louis Prima. From the 1920s through the 1960s, Prima was a popular Italian-American bandleader and musician known for genres like early R&b, rock 'n' roll, boogie-woogie,...

Based on the best-selling books by James Patterson, Cross follows a forensic psychologist and detective named Alex Cross, who lost his wife and is raising two kids while solving mysteries. Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat review – finger-popping theory of the conspiracy to kill Congo’s leader
Johan Grimonprez
Johan Grimonprez’s fascinating documentary suggests that the US used jazz legend Louis Armstrong in a ‘cool war’ offensive to assassinate Patrice Lumumba

I last encountered the work of the Belgian artist and film-maker Johan Grimonprez in the documentary-reverie Double Take from 2009, which imagined an encounter between two Alfred Hitchcocks. Now in this fascinating and valuably informative film, he amplifies what he sees as the mood music that lay behind the assassination of the leftist Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba in 1961; a strange and jazzy new “cool war” offensive in which the American intelligence services, through various fronts, tried to export jazz music by black American musicians to Africa, to win hearts and minds.

The film suggests that Lumumba’s murder, perpetrated by partisans of a civil war stoked by western intelligence services soon after his election, was connived by the US, the Un and by Congo’s former imperial masters,...

Doc Talk Podcast: Oscar-Contending Director Johan Grimonprez Explains How He Pulled Off Incredible Filmmaking Feat In ‘Soundtrack To A Coup D’Etat’
Image
In February 1961, a remarkable outburst took place at the United Nations in New York – jazz artists Abbey Lincoln, Max Roach, writer Maya Angelou and others crashed the Security Council to protest the assassination of Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba.

That little-remembered demonstration serves as the backdrop to the award-winning documentary Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat, directed by Belgian filmmaker Johan Grimonprez. The film explores how the U.S. and Belgium conspired to force Lumumba from power, with the complicity of the Un secretary general. Even as the plot moved towards a bloody denouement, the U.S. State Department was dispatching some of America’s great Black jazz artists to Africa in the role of goodwill ambassadors, attempting to paper over its machinations in Congo.

Grimonprez joins the latest episode of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast to explain how he managed to deftly synthesize so much complex world history, setting it...
