This Best Picture Nominee From 2010 Is Hitting IMAX Theaters For The First Time In 2025
Image
An Oscar-nominated psychological thriller is soon to make its IMAX debut, 15 years after it was first released. IMAX theaters have become synonymous with big summer blockbusters from the major franchises, but there are some exceptions to this trend, as other genres have had some representation in IMAX over the years.

While most IMAX screens are reserved for popular new releases, there have been a few successful re-releases over the years. One good example is Avatar's 2022 re-release to generate excitement for James Cameron's long-awaited sequel, The Way of Water. The news of a 2010 Best Picture nominee getting an IMAX release is a little different, however.

New Trailer for 15th Anniversary Re-Release of 'Black Swan' in IMAX
Image
"What happened to my sweet girl?" "She's gone!" Searchlight Pictures has debuted a brand new trailer for Darren Aronofsky's Oscar-winning thriller Black Swan, which originally opened in 2010. It is celebrating its 15th Anniversary this year, so they're giving it a quick re-release with this two-nights-only plan. The big news about this re-release is that its getting an update. The IMAX release will be digitally re-mastered into the image & sound quality of The IMAX Experience. It will also feature a new, immersive IMAX 5.0 sound mix. Black Swan is Aronofsky's thriller about the relationship between a veteran ballet dancer and a rival who's looking to win the same role in the new production of Swan Lake. Starring Natalie Portman & Mila Kunis, with Winona Ryder, Vincent Cassel, and Barbara Hershey. The superb film (my 2010 review) was nominated for five Academy Awards, but only won one for Natalie Portman as Best Actress (The King's Speech...

Image
Black Swanis celebrating its fifteenth anniversary, if that can be believed, and Searchlight Pictures is commemorating the milestone by re-releasing the film. Co-starring Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey, Winona Ryder, and Vincent Cassel, Black Swan went on to be nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, with the film ultimately winning Portman the Best Actress Oscar.

Criterion’s October 2025 Lineup Includes Ken Russell, Guillermo del Toro and a Double Dose of David Cronenberg
Image
Criterion unveiled their titles for October 2025 and, true to form, their new releases in the month of October lean into the spooky and macabre. Among the new titles are a recent Guillermo del Toro classic, a Ken Russell favorite making its 4K debut and two gems from Canadian auteur David Cronenberg. Plus, we get 4K reissues of two of Criterion’s very best.

Criterion

Let’s start off with the David Cronenberg titles. First off is “A History of Violence,” from 2005, which gave him a great second wind after years spent offering up more obscure films. The feature, based on a graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke, follows a small-town everyman (Viggo Mortensen) who, after a violent attack at his diner, unlocks his hidden past. Featuring memorable, suitably colorful supporting performances from Ed Harris and William Hurt, it’s one of Cronenberg’s very best. And the Criterion...

‘Dexter: Resurrection,’ ‘It’s Always Sunny,’ ‘Drop,’ and the best to stream this weekend: July 11
Image
Welcome to the Gold Ticket, your VIP guide to the best of pop culture for the weekend ahead, curated by the Gold Derby team of experts. (July 11-July 13)

The main stream

Just like Slim Shady, Dexter Morgan's back (back again).

If you're keeping track at home, Dexter: Resurrection is the fourth series about the vigilante serial killer (portrayed by Emmy nominee Michael C. Hall). It's the sequel to the sequel of the original Emmy-winning drama (the fourth series in the popular franchise is a prequel). While we cannot say how Dexter survived a seemingly fatal gunshot wound in 2021's Dexter: New Blood, we're willing to bet the latest series — the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Paramount+ (the show airs Sunday at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on Showtime) — will answer this very question.

On Resurrection, the show's setting is moved to New York, and while there...

‘Daniela Forever’ Review: Nacho Vigalondo’s Sci-Fi Drama Is Less Than the Sum of Its Influences
Image
Nacho Vigalondo’s Daniela Forever is the second notable film this year to propose an unorthodox, hyper-modern treatment for grief. In David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds, a widower played by Vincent Cassel obsessively monitors his interred wife’s bodily decomposition via live video feed—the closest he can get to being with her in the grave. Vigalondo’s idea, less outwardly perverse, is no less emotionally freighted: dream therapy.

Nick (Henry Golding) is a British DJ living in Madrid whose artist girlfriend, Daniela (Beatrice Grannò), an expat from Italy, was recently killed in an accident. At the suggestion of his divorced friend Victoria (Nathalie Poza), Nick enrolls in a clinical trial for an experimental new drug that induces lucid dreams. Although Nick agrees to follow the program exactly, with each dream session arising from a given prompt, he ignores his instructions and uses these realer-than-real excursions of the mind to be with his deceased lover.

The best Apple TV+ drama you’re probably not watching
Image
‘Hijack’ didn’t get the spotlight it deserved, but it’s one of the most addictive series on the platform.

There’s so much dropping on Apple TV+ all the time (which is a great thing for subscribers!) that even a show starring the incredible Idris Elba can get lost in the shuffle. “Hijack” actually cracked Apple+’s Top 10 when it premiered, but you wouldn’t know it from the lack of buzz. Maybe it got overshadowed by shinier releases like “Silo” or “Ted Lasso,” but I was shouting about it to anyone who would listen. This show rips. It’s tense, addictive, and Elba is in full command. If you missed it the first time around, here’s why “Hijack” is the best under-the-radar drama on Apple TV+ right now.

‘28 Years Later’ Has Grossed Five Times As Much As Danny Boyle’s Infamous 68% Rotten Tomatoes Film Noir
Image
Director Danny Boyle took a path befitting an Oscar-winner after Slumdog Millionaire, when he made the awards-bait survival drama 127 Hours, starring James Franco. But this well-mannered strategy lasted exactly one film, and Boyle was soon back to his transgressive ways with Trance, a neo-noir thriller starring James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson, and Vincent Cassel. The film underperformed at the box office, and drew raised eyebrows from critics. But it remains a cult favorite, with a considerably large contingent of defenders. Speaking of cults, Boyle's latest film, 28 Years Later, has now out-grossed Trance five times.

The movie recently passed the coveted $100 million mark at the worldwide box office, and is currently sitting at $104 million. By comparison, Tranceconcluded its run with just over $20 million globally. It didn't quite break even, since it cost a reported $20 million to produce. Trance received divisive reviews, and is currently sitting at a "fresh" 68% score on...

The Shrouds
Image
“You’ve made a career out of bodies,” says Terry (Diane Kruger) to her brother-in-law Karsh (Vincent Cassel), a widower hollowed out by his wife Becca’s (also Diane Kruger) death. This line will raise a smile for anyone even slightly familiar with the films of writer and director David Cronenberg, whose oeuvre, from The Fly to Crimes Of The Future, has always been profoundly concerned with matters of the flesh.

In this latest complex and captivating outing, the master of the macabre ruminates on bodily transformation in relation to sex, death and technology, from an especially personal perspective while maintaining characteristic gallows humour.

Cronenberg makes no attempt to disguise the fact that The Shrouds is autobiographical.

Karsh is the CEO of GraveTech, which allows mourners to view a live feed of their loved one’s decaying corpse via a screen on their gravestone, made possible by burial shrouds embedded with cameras.

Criterion Channel to host streaming release of The Shrouds beginning July 8th
David Cronenberg
It may have originally been conceived as a series for Netflix, but David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds won’t be headed to that streamer anytime soon, as The Criterion Channel will hold streaming rights to the director’s most recent film.

Considering Criterion has a long history with David Cronenberg, it might be no surprise that they will host The Shrouds. This is especially so as Janus Films — who has a long partnership with The Criterion Collection — had distribution rights for The Shrouds alongside Sideshow. Once The Shrouds hits The Criterion Channel on July 8th (with a special 8 p.m. premiere time), it will sit alongside classics like Scanners, The Brood and Dead Ringers, as well as lesser-known works like his first two features, Stereo and Crimes of the Future.

Here is The Criterion Channel’s official write-up for The Shrouds: “Long fascinated by the ways that technology is transforming our bodies and minds,...

The film stars Vincent Cassel as Karsh, a haunted tech entrepreneur who creates a controversial new device allowing the bereaved to monitor the decomposition of their loved ones’ remains underground.

From Cannes to the UK: Cronenberg’s ‘The Shrouds’ Hits Screens
Image
David Cronenberg’s latest film The Shrouds will arrive in UK and Irish cinemas on 4 July via Vertigo Releasing. The body horror drama, which first premiered in competition at Cannes 2024, reunites the director with themes of grief and transformation as it explores the uneasy boundary between life and death. With a cast led by Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce and Sandrine Holt, the film promises a provocative blend of technology and terror.

Set four years after the death of his wife Becca, Cassel plays Karsh, a wealthy entrepreneur who invents “GraveTech” – a controversial system of interactive tombstones that project 3D images of the deceased. Karsh hopes to lie beside Becca when his time comes, but his dream is shattered when several graves, including his wife’s, are desecrated and the technology is hacked. Faced with the prospect of his project being discredited and the shrouds made invisible, Karsh embarks...

Vincent Cassel and Jean-Francois Richet team for Netflix’s Quasimodo

Back in 1831, author Victor Hugo brought the world the novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, telling the 1482-set story of Quasimodo, a deformed fellow who served as the bell-ringer of at the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Nearly two hundred years later, versions of Hugo’s story are still being told on a regular basis – with the most recent adaptation being a film that’s set up at the Netflix streaming service. Deadline reports that Vincent Cassel (Black Swan) is set to play the title character in Quasimodo, which has Jean-François Richet attached to direct.

Richet may be best known for his work on action films like Plane, Blood Father, and the Assault on Precinct 13 remake, but he has also directed multiple dramas, the crimes films Mesrine: Killer Instinct and Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1, the period adventure film The Emperor of Paris, and the comedy One Wild Moment, a version of...

Netflix's Movie Retelling Of Hunchback Of Notre Dame Casts Quasimodo
Image
Netflix's The Hunchback of Notre Dame movie, titled Quasimodo, has reportedly found its Quasimodo and will begin filming this summer. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is originally the 19th-century gothic novel by Victor Hugo (also the author of Les Misérables) about a bell-ringer at the famous at Paris’ famous Notre Dame cathedral who falls in love with the Roma dancer Emserelda. Today, the most well-known adaptation is arguably the animated version by Disney, which significantly changed the story from the source material to be presented to the typical family-inclusive audience.

While Disney previously had plans for its own Hunchback of Notre Dame live-action remake, which would presumably be based on the studio's own movie, Netflix is working on Quasimodo and has just announced that Vincent Cassel will be taking on the lead role (via Deadline). Cassel will thus be collaborating with Jean-Francois Richet as the director and Eric Besnard as the screenwriter.

Netflix's 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' Remake Finds Its Quasimodo in an Ocean's Franchise Star
Image
Vincent Cassel is set to star as one of the most enduring characters in the history of French literature. The Black Swan star will play the lead role in Quasimodo, which will explore the real person who inspired Victor Hugo to write The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Deadline reports that the film will be released by Netflix.

The film will be set in Paris on the eve of 1830's July Revolution, which dethroned King Charles X and installed Louis Philippe, the so-called "Citizen King." A cholera epidemic is ravaging the streets of the city, while Quasimodo is caught between political unrest and a strange, impossible love affair. The existence of a real Quasimodo isn't so far-fetched: there is evidence that the kyphotic bell-ringer at the ancient cathedral was inspired by a real person, albeit not one from the novel's 1400s setting. The memoirs of Henry Sibson, a British sculptor who...

Banger Review: Cassel Spins Gold in a Scratched Narrative
Image
The air in “Banger” is thick with the ghosts of past anthems and the desperate humidity of a relevance long since evaporated. This French concoction, part comedy, part aspirational action piece, throws its spotlight on DJ Scorpex, a man whose name once reverberated through club sound systems but now echoes mainly in the hollow chambers of his own memory.

He stands, a monument to a bygone beat, struggling against the dying of his own light in the fiercely contemporary electronic music scene. The film gestures towards a satirical swipe at this world of manufactured fame and fleeting adulation, setting a stage where the desire for one more hit becomes a matter of existential urgency.

Scorpex’s current setlist is one of professional decline and mounting financial pressures, his denial a fragile shield against the stark reality of his situation. The narrative gains its peculiar momentum when this relic of the...

France’s Memento Buys Harry Lighton’s Sexy Romance ‘Pillion’ Ahead of Cannes Premiere to Complete Big Festival Slate
Image
Alexandre Mallet-Guy’s Memento has bought Harry Lighton’s sexy romance “Pillion” which is world premiering in Un Certain Regard.

The Paris-based Memento, which is at Cannes with three movies in competition, will release the A24 movie in France. Speaking to Variety, Mallet Guy said, “It’s a gay Bdsm rom-com, and it’s pretty wild.”

“Alexander Skarsgård plays the biker, and Harry Melling, who you might know from ‘Harry Potter,’ plays the submissive. The film is hilarious but also quite disturbing, simply because it’s a romantic comedy set in such a specific, unconventional world. But it really works — it’s surprisingly emotional, and there’s something incredible about seeing two stars take such bold risks,” he added.

Memento’s Cannes competition lineup includes Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value,” Jafar Panahi’s “A Simple Accident” and Tarik Saleh’s “Eagles of the Republic,” as well as Laura Wandel’s...

Podtalk: Icon David Cronenberg on ‘The Shrouds’ and Career
Image
Chicago – In the pantheon of filmmaker breakthroughs from the 1980s, David Cronenberg is a “name above the title” … along with Spielberg, Scorsese, Cameron, Stone, Carpenter and Lynch … in his distinct style and influence. His latest film – currently in select theaters – is “The Shrouds.” Patrick McDonald got the privilege of talking to the master.

In “The Shrouds,” the angular Vincent Cassel is Karsh, a bereaved widower who is also a tech financier. In memoriam to his wife Becca, Karsh has built a new style of memorial called GraveTech, in which the bodies of the deceased are enmeshed in a digital shroud, which uses it’s camera chips to project an image of the decaying corpse on a screen embedded in the gravestone. This morbid technique gets some interest for other uses by the Chinese and the Russians, as well as Karsh’s tech expert Maury (Guy Pearce). It is a vandalism...

The Shrouds (2024) Review
Image
The new David Cronenberg feature, The Shrouds, screened at the Overlook Film Festival in New Orleans this year. I was able to grab a seat at the Sunday afternoon showing which felt very apt for the mellow mood of the film.

With a wide release on April 18th, be prepared for the subtle and quiet weirdness that Cronenberg has honed in his recent releases like Crimes of the Future. The Shrouds is equal parts psychological thriller and body horror, presented very stylistically with a plot that unravels unhurriedly.

The story focuses on the grief of creative director turned death innovator Karsh, played by Vincent Cassel. Karsh has developed a “shroud” system to capture every intimate detail of decay for those who, like himself, find more comfort confronting their loss by immersing themselves in it. After the vandalism of his inaugural high-tech gravesite and the discovery of strange growths on his deceased wife’s skeleton,...

Netflix’s Glossy Adaptation of the World’s Second-Biggest Comic Book Series Gains New Ground
Image
A little over a decade ago, director Steven Spielberg had difficulty explaining to American audiences that Raiders of the Lost Ark was inspired by the comic book series "The Adventures of Tintin," and not the other way around. Spielberg directed a feature film adaptation of the Tintin books in 2011, and while the movie made a decent amount of money worldwide, it struggled to find an audience domestically. The property was simply not a part of popular culture in the United States, at least not to the degree that it was in Europe. Now, another Franco-Belgian comic book icon is getting an opportunity to appeal to audiences across the globe. Netflix recently unveiled its five-episode adaptation of the Astérix comics, titled Astérix & Obélix: The Big Fight.

The show is gaining new ground on the streamer's viewership charts, particularly in Europe. According to FlixPatrol, Astérix & Obélix has accumulated over 3,100 points since its release last week,...

Review: David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds Explained (I Think)
Image
Legendary writer/director David Cronenberg maintains his status as Canada’s coolest weirdo with his latest feature The Shrouds. Cronenberg’s conspiracy obsessed techo-mystery stars Vincent Cassel (Eastern Promises) as Karsh, a morose but visionary widower who has built an empire dedicated to his eternal grief for his late wife Becca (Diane Kruger, Inglorious Basterds). Through his company GraveTech, Karsh invents a shroud that the deceased are wrapped in at burial which allows the bereaved to view their loved ones in the grave. You know, like a baby monitor for watching your spouse decompose in real-time. Naturally this business is met with all manner of protest but after someone(s) vandalizes his customers’ (and his wife’s) burial plots, Karsh uncovers a bewildering conspiracy that threatens his life, his livelihood, and his link to the grave.

For anyone still on the fence about taking the trip to see The Shrouds during its theatrical run,...

David Cronenberg says he’s working on an adaptation of his novel, Consumed
David Cronenberg
Director David Cronenberg’s 2014 Consumed novel could become a TV or film, as the filmmaker says he’s adapting the script.

In 2014, Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg became a novelist with Consumed, a characteristically uneasy book about the relationship between cold technology and fleshy humans.

Currently on the promotional trail for his new film, The Shrouds, Cronenberg has suggested that Consumed could eventually become a TV or film, since he’s currently adapting it into a script.

In an interview with Variety (with a hat-tip to World of Reel), the filmmaker has said that the catalyst for the adaptation is Robert Lantos, the producer he’s regularly collaborated with in the past, from 1996’s Crash to 2022’s Crimes Of The Future.

“We’re talking about possibly doing a movie based on my novel Consumed,” Cronenberg said. “[Lantos has] wanted to turn that either into a series or a movie for some years, and...

David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds” Confronts Death Through Fiction
David Cronenberg
David Cronenberg’s latest film, The Shrouds, now in theaters via Sideshow and Janus Films, draws from deeply personal experiences without crossing into autobiography, the director insists. The film follows Karsh, a Canadian tech entrepreneur portrayed by Vincent Cassel, who creates a cemetery where loved ones can monitor real-time decomposition through an app-connected burial shroud. The concept stems from Cronenberg’s own grief after the death of his wife, Carolyn, in 2017.

Despite surface parallels between Cronenberg and his protagonist — including Karsh’s distinctive hairstyle and minimalist attire — the filmmaker maintains a sharp distinction between personal experience and fiction. “Once I start writing the screenplay, it becomes fiction and I’m creating fictional characters who are not me,” Cronenberg said in an interview.

The Shrouds explores themes of mourning, love, technology, and existential longing. The film’s origin traces back to Cronenberg’s visceral reaction to losing his wife. He described...

David Cronenberg on Leaving Reality Behind in His Tragic New Film ‘The Shrouds’ and Why He Rejects Hollywood’s ‘Delusional’ Obsession With Film Over Digital
Image
It’s easy to see shadows of David Cronenberg in his newest film, “The Shrouds,” now playing in theaters via Sideshow and Janus Films. Vincent Cassel stars as Karsh, a Canadian tech guru who creates a graveyard where you can watch your loved ones rot in their coffin in real-time via an app. Between Karsh’s styling — which looks very similar to Cronenberg’s signature shock of hair and minimalist chic wardrobe — and the fact that Cronenberg wrote this film after his wife’s passing in 2017, many critics took this to mean the work was largely autobiographical. Cronenberg’s rejection of the notion was just one of the first surprising musings from a discussion with Variety about his approach to art, including his consideration of the audience, embrace of technology and rejection of genre.

So many of your movies feel like they have personal elements. “The Shrouds” seems like one of your most personal works.
