'Basic Instinct' Reboot With Sharon Stone Reportedly In Development at Amazon MGM Studios
Image
It looks like Sharon Stone could be returning to the role that turned her into a Hollywood star and became the original “pause challenge” long before TikTok existed. In a surprising turn of events, Basic Instinct screenwriter Joe Eszterhas is reportedly reviving the erotic thriller franchise for United Artists and Amazon MGM Studio after closing a $4 million deal.

In what is said to be the biggest spec script sale of 2025 (as per The Wrap), Stone could reprise her role as Catherine Tramell for a third time, and according to the source discussing the deal, the film would be an “anti-woke” reboot of the franchise. Although there have been no further details revealed about what the plot could look like or how Stone’s Tramell could figure in a movie where she originally played a post-feminist icon that didn’t mind which gender she dabbled with while running rings around police.

1 of the Most Controversial Thrillers of the 90s Is Getting Rebooted
Image
Basic Instinct, the 1992 erotic thriller starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone, is being reimagined. It's just the latest feature film from years past to be rebooted by Hollywood.

Per Variety, a new take on Basic Instinct is now in development from Amazon MGM Studios' United Artists and Scott Stuber. Original screenwriter Joe Eszterhas is returning to write the script for the new version, which is not currently titled, but is expected to have a different name. Stuber is producing for United Artists alongside Nick Nesbit and Vault Entertainment's Craig Baumgarten. Cast members are not yet known.

Basic Instinct was directed by Paul Verhoeven. It followed Douglas as Nick Curran, a detective investigating a murder who gets embroiled in a complicated relationship with the prime suspect, played by Stone. The film was a big success, earning $353 million at the box office against a budget of less than $50 million. It also drew acclaim,...

‘Basic Instinct’ Writer Joe Eszterhas Penning Reboot For Amazon MGM’s United Artists: “A Wild & Orgasmic Ride”
Image
Amazon MGM Studios‘ United Artists and Scott Stuber have acquired rights to one of the most iconic ’90s erotic thrillers.

Basic Instinct (1992) writer Joe Eszterhas is returning to pen a not-yet-titled reboot of the Paul Verhoeven-helmed box office hit, which starred Michael Douglas as Detective Nick Curran and Sharon Stone as his case’s seductive prime suspect Catherine Tramell, a manipulative crime novelist.

“To those who question what an 80-year-old man is doing writing a sexy, erotic thriller: the rumors of my cinematic impotence are exaggerated and ageist,” said Eszterhas in a statement. “I call my writing partner the ‘Twisted Little Man’ and he lives somewhere deep inside me. He was born 29 and he will die 29 and he tells me he is ‘sky high up’ to write this piece and provide viewers with a wild and orgasmic ride. That makes me very happy.”

Producers include UA’s Stuber and Nick Nesbitt,...

A Touch of Love review – Margaret Drabble’s single-mother drama is a vivid 60s time capsule
Waris Hussein
This Drabble adaptation about a PhD student who gets pregnant is kitchen-sinky but without humour or even awareness. It’s an interesting curio

Waris Hussein’s earnest 1969 movie, adapted by Margaret Drabble from her own novel The Millstone, is a London-set drama about a young woman who has difficulties with men while researching a PhD in English literature – and as a result we get some tremendously nostalgic shots of the British Museum round reading room, when it was still a working library. American star Sandy Dennis puts on a stage-school English accent to play Rosamund, the graduate student who has well-to-do but insufferable bien pensant liberal parents, the kind of people who, as she explains to someone, “let the charlady sit down to dine with us, that kind of nonsense”.

Rosamund finds herself alone in her parents’ London flat while they are away doing good works in Africa and she exchanges brittle,...

Brian Cox Calls Out Hollywood's 'Brian Cox Doubles Down on Criticism of 'Overrated' Hollywood Stars Like Johnny Depp & Steven Seagal
Image
Critically acclaimed actor Brian Cox, who recently starred in HBO's Succession, called out several actors in his 2022 memoir Putting the Rabbit in the Hat. Some of the passages included references to Johnny Depp, Edward Norton, Steven Seagal, and Quentin Tarantino.

In a new interview with The Guardian, Cox admitted he upset several fellow actors over the years. In his memoir, he called Johnny Depp "so overblown, so overrated," which led to him turning down a role in The Pirates of the Caribbean. He also had other notes about fellow celebrities, as he called Steven Seagal, with whom he worked on 1996's The Glimmer Man "as ludicrous in real life as he appears on screen," noted Edward Norton is "a nice lad, but a bit of a pain in the arse because he fancies himself as a writer-director." He called Michael Caton-Jones, who directed him in Rob Roy, a "complete arsehole.

Brian Cox Doubles Down On “Overrated Actors” And ‘Succession’ Co-Star Jeremy Strong’s Method
Image
Brian Cox has doubled down on the description he used in his memoir of actors Johnny Depp and Steven Seagal as “overrated” and “ludicrous” respectively.

The Succession star published his memoirs in 2022, in which he described his The Glimmer Man co-star Seagal “as ludicrous in real life as he appears on screen.” In the same pages, he called Depp “so overblown, so overrated”, Quentin Tarantino’s work “meretricious”, Edward Norton “a nice lad but a bit of pain in the a**e” and director Michael Caton-Jones as “a complete a**ehole.”

This weekend, in an interview with The Guardian newspaper, Cox admitted he’d upset a few people over the years, but added in reference to Depp and Seagal:

“But then they probably think they’re overrated as well. So I’m not saying anything they don’t think anyway.”

Cox also doubled down on his criticism of his Succession...

‘I feel I’ve upset a few people over the years’: actor Brian Cox on overrated co-stars, charmless politicians and the joy of smoking weed
Kieran Culkin, Alan Ruck, Brian Cox, Matthew Macfadyen, Jeremy Strong, Nicholas Braun, and Sarah Snook in Succession (2018)
He’s famed for grumpy roles and outspoken views, but don’t be fooled – the Succession star is a pussycat at heart. He talks about growing up in poverty, falling in love with his wife – and out of love with Labour

As I leave the office, my editor wishes me luck. “Hope he’s not too grumpy!” she says. A moment later, the deputy editor asks where I’m off to. To see Brian Cox, the actor, I say. “Oh!” she says, with a rather-you-than-me look. “Hope he’s not too grumpy!”

Cox has played grumpy for going on 60 years. All sorts of grumpiness – idiot grumpy (independent candidate Bob Servant in the TV comedy of the same name), world-weary grumpy (school principal Dr Nelson Guggenheim in Wes Anderson’s film Rushmore), psychopathic grumpy (the first movie incarnation of Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter), egomaniacal grumpy (Robert McKee in Spike Jonze’s Adaptation) and,...

Ron Perlman Is Proudest of a Movie Nobody's Heard Of
Image
Ron Perlman has had a remarkable career. His first film was an Oscar winner (Quest for Fire) from a great director; later that decade, he'd win a Golden Globe for the TV series Beauty and the Beast. He's been in everything from big franchise movies and international arthouse films to indie horror and numerous classics with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. But when MovieWeb spoke with Perlman about his new film with Liam Neeson, Absolution, he surprised us when he named the film in his career that he's the proudest of — and it's one hardly anybody has seen.

"I had a production company for about five or six years called Wing and a Prayer Pictures, and I produced about nine movies," explained Perlman. He continued:

"And the first one we identified was called Asher, and it was actually the last movie we produced. It was the movie that killed the company.

‘It Ends with Us’ Struggled to Meaningfully Engage with the Subject of Abuse, but These Films Do
Image
The recently released film adaption of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel “It End with Us” was a lot of things and has certainly gotten a lot of people talking. It’s unfortunate, however, that the most important subjects at its center — that of domestic violence and emotional abuse — have not been top-of-mind for most conversations regarding the film, but rather alleged personal riffs between star Blake Lively and director/co-star Justin Baldoni. When domestic violence and abuse have been discussed in reference to the film, it has typically been with criticism over how the film and its rollout have avoided more thoughtfully grappling with these themes, rarely reaching for a narrative that goes any deeper than a casual beach read.

In speaking on adapting Hoover’s novel for the screen in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Baldoni acknowledged his interest in focusing on how Lively’s character, Lily Bloom, overcomes her circumstances,...

Why Fans Forgot About Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio's First Movie
Image
Despite a star-studded cast, This Boy's Life only earned $4 million at the box office upon release in 1993. The family drama film failed to stand out among others in the genre, leading to its relative obscurity today. The movie served as an early launching pad for several rising stars, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and more.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro are among the most iconic actors working today. While both have appeared in their share of critically acclaimed titles, they've also collaborated a handful of times, most notably with Martin Scorsese. Killers of the Flower Moon is the most recent, while DiCaprio and De Niro also appeared in Scorsese's 2015 short film The Audition. But there was another time the two legends shared the screen over 30 years ago.

DiCaprio and De Niro first appeared together in the 1993 drama This Boy's Life, from director Michael Caton-Jones. DiCaprio starred as young Toby Wolff,...

‘The Barracks Thief:’ Novella From ‘This Boy’s Life’ Author Tobias Wolff To Be Adapted For The Screen By Mindriot’s Jonathan Keasey
Image
Exclusive: Jonathan Keasey, the scribe behind Danielle Deadwyler’s Parallel and Demi Lovato’s Tow, has signed on to adapt The Barracks Thief, a novella from award-winning author Tobias Wolff.

Keasey joins playwright Tyler Rivenbark on the project. The pair will collaborate on the screenplay based on Wolff’s novella.

Wolff, an Emeritus professor at Stanford, is best known as a memoirist. Most notably, his 1989 book This Boy’s Life: A Memoir was adapted for the screen by Michael Caton-Jones, with Leonardo DiCaprio starring as the teenage Wolff in his breakout big-screen performance and Robert De Niro as his abusive step-father Dwight.

The Barracks Thief is the story of three young paratroopers waiting to be shipped out to Vietnam. Brought together one sweltering afternoon to stand guard over an ammunition dump threatened by a forest fire, they discover in each other an unexpected capacity for recklessness and violence. Far from being alarmed by this discovery,...

Killers of the Flower Moon releases new trailer and is now coming to IMAX theaters
Image
While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny didn’t quite make the splash it was hoping to make when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year, another movie that made its debut there (to much greater success) is Martin Scorsese’s new anticipated drama Killers of the Flower Moon. This film brings a collaboration of Scorsese’s two prominent go-to actors of his career, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. Both of them have worked together previously, portraying father and son in 1993’s This Boy’s Life from director Michael Caton-Jones. However, the standout performance that audiences have been raving about is Lily Gladstone, as DiCaprio’s Native American spouse.

Apple has recently released a new trailer for the drama. And the official synopsis reads,

At the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight.

T20 World Cup: Bowlers, Ervine, Raza star as Zimbabwe beat Scotland by five wickets, clinch final Super 12 spot (ld)

Hobart, Oct 21 (Ians) Captain Craig Ervine played a captain’s knock of 58 off 54 balls while Sikandar Raza smacked a cameo of 40 as Zimbabwe beat Scotland by five wickets in the first round of Icc Men’s T20 World Cup at Bellerive Oval to end up as winners of Group B and clinch the final Super 12 spot.

After Tendai Chatara and Richard Ngarava picked two wickets each in a clinical bowling performance to restrict Scotland to a paltry total of 132/6 in 20 overs, Zimbabwe were in trouble at 42/3 in eight overs.

But Ervine, who hit his sixth T20I fifty, and Raza shared a 64-run stand off 43 balls, followed by Milton Shumba and Ryan Burl applying finishing touches for Zimbabwe to chase down the total with nine balls to spare, continuing their good run in the tournament after featuring the last time in T20 World Cup in 2016.

T20 World Cup: Chatara, Ngarava star as Zimbabwe restrict Scotland to a paltry 132/6

Hobart, Oct 21 (Ians) Tendai Chatara and Richard Ngarava picked two wickets each in a clinical bowling performance as Zimbabwe restricted Scotland to a paltry total of 132/6 in 20 overs in final Group B match in round one of the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup at Bellerive Oval on Friday.

Scotland were unable to justify their captain Richie Berrington’s decision to bat first as none of the batters looked fluent, including their top-scorer George Munsey, who made 54 off 51 balls with seven fours.

Moreover, Zimbabwe bowlers resorted to straight lines and with spinners keeping things tight, didn’t concede a single six in the innings, the first time an instance like this was recorded in ongoing T20 World Cup.

Scotland lost their openers Michael Jones and Matthew Cross in the first 4.1 overs. Munsey, Berrington and Calum MacLeod tried their best to get the Scotland innings back on track, but they never...

If we execute the way we know, will send ripples through Zimbabwe: Scotland coach Shane Burger
Image
Hobart, Oct 20 (Ians) Taking inspiration from their shock 42-run win over West Indies in their opening Group B match in first round of Icc Men’s T20 World Cup, Scotland coach Shane Burger is confident of executing their plans right on Friday to upstage their opponents Zimbabwe in order to qualify for Super 12 stage of the tournament for second straight time in as many editions.

“We know that without focusing too much on the opposition, if we go out and play our way, we know we can beat any team. We did so not very long ago against the two-time world champions (West Indies). So if we execute the way we know, hopefully it will send ripples through that Zimbabwe team. We can put a bit more pressure on them,” said Burger in the pre-match press conference.

After the victory over West Indies, Scotland were well on their way to...

T20 World Cup: Campher, Dockrell keep Ireland in hunt for Super 12s with six-wicket win over Scotland (ld)
Image
Hobart, Oct 19 (Ians) Curtis Campher and George Dockrell shared an unbeaten 119-run stand for the fifth wicket in Ireland’s successful chase of 177 to seal a come-from-behind six-wicket win over Scotland in their Group B match of the first round in Icc Men’s T20 World Cup at Bellerive Oval on Wednesday.

After opener Michael Jones hit a magnificent 86 off 55 balls to carry Scotland to a massive 176/5, the bowlers came into act by reducing Ireland to 61/4 in 9.3 overs and victory looked improbable with every minute.

That’s when Campher (72 not out off 37 balls) and Dockrell (39 not out off 27 balls) joined forces to shock Scotland and get a win out of nowhere for Ireland with a brilliant partnership in just 9.3 overs and keep them in the reckoning for a Super 12 spot.

The duo ran excellently hard between the wickets, converted their ones into twos, twos into threes and kept the boundaries...

T20 World Cup: Michael Jones' 86 carries Scotland to massive 176/5 against Ireland
Image
Hobart, Oct 19 (Ians) Scotland continued to impress in the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup as opener Michael Jones hit a magnificent 86 to carry the side to a massive 176/5 against Ireland in their Group B match of the first round at Bellerive Oval on Wednesday.

It was a dominant innings for Scotland, who hardly kept any foot wrong from the time of winning the toss and electing to bat first. Jones was unarguably the star of Scotland’s innings, hitting six fours and four sixes in his 55-ball 86, at a high strike-rate of 156.36.

After losing his opening partner George Munsey in the second over of the innings, Jones had to be cautious as well as adjust to the conditions. After passing through the initial phase, he then came out swinging with his array of shots, and looking delightful in hitting a majority of his boundaries through the leg-side, including one...

T20 World Cup: Munsey, Watt, Leask help Scotland secure shock 42-run win over West Indies (2nd ld)
Image
Hobart, Oct 17 (Ians) Just 24 hours after Namibia kick-started the Men’s T20 World Cup with a stunning 55-run win over Sri Lanka, Scotland pulled off another major upset in the tournament with a shock 42-run victory over two-time champions West Indies in a Group B first round match at the Bellerive Oval on Monday.

After opener George Munsey carried his bat throughout the innings to slam an unbeaten 66 to help Scotland post an excellent 160/5, left-arm spinner Mark Watt led a fantastic bowling show with his brilliant 3/12 to bowl out West Indies for 118 all out in 18.3 overs.

The 42-run win for Scotland, ranked 15th in men’s T20I rankings, comes exactly a year after they defeated Bangladesh by six runs in their opening first round match of 2021 T20 World Cup at Al Amerat, Oman and entering the ongoing tournament on the back of playing only two T20Is this year.

T20 World Cup: George Munsey's unbeaten 66 helps Scotland post 160/5 against West Indies
Image
Hobart, Oct 17 (Ians) Opener George Munsey carried his bat throughout the innings to slam an unbeaten 66 to help Scotland post an excellent 160/5 in their Group B match of the T20 World Cup against the West Indies at the Bellerive Oval on Monday.

For the West Indies, veteran all-rounder Jason Holder was the pick of the bowlers with 2/14, while young fast bowler Alzarri Joseph picked up 2/28 while Odean Smith finished with figures of 1/31.

Pushed into batting first, Scotland were off to a breezy start, making 54 runs for no loss inside the first six overs, including nine boundaries hit by Munsey and Michael Jones, before rain interrupted their fine opening partnership.

Post resumption after a 47-minute break, Scotland scored only 16 runs in their next four overs, but lost Jones and Matthew Cross to Jason Holder, who hit the deck hard with his hard lengths to get West Indies back in the match.

This adaptation of Alan Warner’s The Sopranos is led by a terrific ensemble cast – though some of the gags feel dated post #MeToo

After Alan Warner published his brilliant and hilarious third novel The Sopranos in 1998, about a group of working-class convent schoolgirls on the rampage in Edinburgh, for years the big surprise has been that it hasn’t been turned into a film. Now, finally, here it is, an adaptation of The Sopranos – and the thing is, it’s a few years too late. Post #MeToo, there are scenes here that are a bit off; in all honesty, though, they might have felt wrong as far back as the Rotherham child abuse scandal. Such as the moment when the girls on the back of the coach flash their bras and wave “shag me” signs to passing builders’ vans.

Still, plenty of Warner’s wonderfully un-pc gags stand the test of time.

Michael Caton-Jones at an event for Shooting Dogs (2005)
by Eric Blume

It’s been a quarter century since the release of Rob Roy, a film directed by Michael Caton-Jones and featuring the pairing of Liam Neeson and Jessica Lange. The period drama is about the eponymous 18th Century Scotland clan chief Robert Roy MacGregor.

Evidently there was a box-office hunger for this type of film around 1995, since one month later Mel Gibson’s Braveheart opened. The latter tragically went on to win Best Picture some nine months later. Both films feature tales of broad-stroke heroism, where the main figure is portrayed as a rebel fighting the system, full of masculine bravado and Bde (the un-fun kind)...

BFI London Film Festival Chief Tricia Tuttle Amps Up Festive Atmosphere
Tricia Tuttle
This year’s edition of the BFI London Film Festival, which starts today, marks Tricia Tuttle’s first in an official capacity as artistic director after she stood in last year while her predecessor was on sabbatical. So what does she have planned?

Tuttle looks back at last year’s performance with satisfaction when, with a total audience of more than 200,000, per screen attendance rose by 12% to an average paid occupancy of 72%, and overall capacity of 84%. This she ascribes to “a strong year for films driving audience interest,” which she believes she’s matched this year with, among 229 feature films, “The Personal History of David Copperfield” opening the festival, and “The Irishman” closing it, and gala screenings including “Knives Out,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “The King” and “Jojo Rabbit.”

Among the festival’s world premieres are Wash Westmoreland’s “Earthquake Bird,” starring Alicia Vikander, Gerard Johnson’s “Muscle,” Michael Caton-Jones’ “Our Ladies,...
