Miloš Forman's Academy Award-Winning Musical Biopic Is Streaming Free Now
Image
Miloš Forman's critically acclaimed biographical film Amadeus has found a new streaming home. The 1984 Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards starts streaming for free this month on Tubi. Other titles set to be added to Tubi's library include Oscar winners like Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Titanic, and Thelma & Louise.

The musical biopic was adapted by writer Peter Shaffer, who had already tackled the subject for his stage play in the late '70s. He was inspired by the 1830 stage play Mozart and Salieri by Russian playwright Alexander Pushkin. Amadeus follows Antonio Salieri's frequently debated contempt for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as the young musical prodigy revolutionized the musical scene in Vienna in the mid-1700s. Per the Rotten Tomatoes synopsis of the film:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Hulce) is a remarkably talented young Viennese composer who unwittingly finds a fierce rival in the disciplined and determined Antonio Salieri...

Étoile Cast Shares Disappointment About Ballet Dramedy’s Cancellation, Wants to ‘Celebrate the Fact That It Existed’
Image
Cast members from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s Étoile are sharing their complicated feelings over the classical ballet’s Prime Video cancellation, a show that was axed despite being given a two-season order.

Yanic Truesdale (who played Le Ballet National trainer Raphaël Marchand), Taïs Vinolo (French ballerina Mishi Duplessis) and Ivan du Pontavice (French dancer Gabin Roux) appeared at the Scad Lacoste Film Festival in France’s Provence region this weekend for a screening and Q&a, all of which was scheduled before the series’ renewal reversal.

5 Songs With ‘Étoile’ Music Supervisor Robin Urdang
Image
Music supervisor is a job that is part professional music nerd, part aural detective and part crate-digging business affairs exec. 5 Songs is a Deadline series that highlights the work of these below-the-line workers through songs and stories.

What do Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Joan Jett, BTS, Rob Zombie and Tchaikovsky have in common? Their songs were all used in Amazon ballet drama Étoile.

Étoile came from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino and followed the the dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies in New York and Paris as they embark on an ambitious gambit to save their storied institutions by swapping their most talented stars.

It starred Luke Kirby, Lou de Laâge, Gideon Glick, Charlotte Gainsbourg, David Alvarez, Ivan du Pontavice, Taïs Vinolo, David Haig, Lamay Zhang and Simon Callow.

The series may have been canceled after one season but there’s still...

Prime Video Cancels ‘Étoile’ After Season 1

Prime Video just canceled its ballet drama series Étoile after its first season, despite giving it a two-season order when it was first greenlit. The cancellation of Étoile comes as a major shock to the fans, as the ballet drama series ended on a cliffhanger, and now they have no way to see the resolution.

Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, the Prime Video series revolves around Jack McMillan and Geneviève Lavigne, the artistic directors of two world-renowned ballet companies, one in New York and one in Paris. In a desperate attempt to save their companies, they decide to exchange their most talented dancers.

Étoile stars Luke Kirby and Lou de Laâge in the lead roles with Charlotte Gainsbourg, Gideon Glick, David Alvarez, Ivan du Pontavice, Taïs Vinolo, David Haig, Lamay Zhang, and Simon Callow.

‘Étoile’ Canceled After Just One Season Despite 2-Season Order at Prime Video
Charlotte Gainsbourg, Luke Kirby, and Lou de Laâge in Étoile (2025)
The curtain is down for “Étoile” at Prime Video. Despite receiving a two-season order when first greenlit, the Amazon ballet drama from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino was canceled at the Amazon streamer.

The series, which had originally received a two-year commitment from Amazon but pending an official green light for Season 2, ended on a cliffhanger.

The show was originally ordered when Jennifer Salke was in charge of Amazon MGM, and the change in management — Salke left that job in late March and MGM Amazon is now run by Prime Video boss Mike Hopkins — may have played a role.

But the show also struggled to find an audience on Prime Video. It debuted April 24 with all 8 episodes premiering, a now-rare release strategy for Amazon, as most Prime Video shows stream weekly.

When “Étoile” debuted it didn’t make Nielsen’s streaming top 10, and despite hitting the top spot on Prime...

Prime Video Cancels New Series With 85% Rt Score Despite 2-Season Order
Image
It's going to be a one-season run for Étoile on Prime Video. Amazon MGM Studios is shelving the series after its first season, despite putting in an initial order for two seasons at the start.

Per Deadline, Étoile has been canceled. The show will continue to receive support for its Emmy campaign in the comedy categories, so there's still a chance it will get some award recognition, even if it isn't getting a second season. The series was initially given a two-season order in 2023, making Étoile a rare case of a series not to move forward with another season after initially having an order put in for multiple.

Étoile was the follow-up show to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel from the team of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino. While there were high hopes in the future of the show, it would seem that the resulting viewership isn't reaching levels that are...

‘Etoile’ Canceled at Amazon After One Season — Despite Two-Season Order
Image
Amazon’s Prime Video has canceled Étoile after a single season — even though the streamer had initially asked for two.

The news comes about six weeks after the series, from Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, premiered its full eight-episode season. Étoile is set in the world of ballet and centers on the heads of historic but struggling companies in New York and Paris (played by Maisel alum Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg) who decide to swap their principal dancers.

Prime Video gave the show a two-season, straight-to-series order in 2023 as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was in its final season. Such deals often have contingencies, however, by which a streamer or network can opt out after part of a multi-season order. That was the case with Étoile.

In the three weeks of Étoile’s release for which data is available, the show has not dented Nielsen’s top 10 streaming charts.

Étoile Cancelled After One Season at Amazon, Despite Two-Season Order
Image
Étoile is taking its final bow, a little earlier than expected.

Amazon’s Prime Video has cancelled the Amy Sherman-Palladino ballet comedy after just one season, our sister site Deadline reports, despite Amazon giving the series a two-season order initially. The decision to cancel “came down largely to performance vs. cost,” Deadline says.

‘Étoile’ Canceled By Prime Video After Season 1 Of Two-Season Order
Image
Exclusive: Adieu, Étoile. Prime Video is not proceeding with a second season of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s ballet drama series, Deadline has learned. The streamer and Amazon MGM Studios will continue to support the series’ Emmy campaign in the comedy categories.

In the Palladinos’ followup to their critical and commercial hit for Prime Video, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, they received a two-season initial pickup for Étoile in 2023. (Mrs. Maisel itself scored Prime Video’s first multi-year order with a two-season pickup in 2017 off a pilot. Étoile was ordered straight-to-series. )

While most multi-season orders result in multi-season runs, that is not guaranteed, and there have been exceptions. There is still an evaluation process after each season that triggers a formal green light with contingencies built in. That is something Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power goes through, getting a Season 2 and, most recently...

‘Étoile’ cast and creators on fast-talking, mean drunks, and what they learned from ‘Gilmore Girls’

“I was 4 and handed a tutu — that’s the gateway drug!”

That’s how Amy Sherman-Palladino explained her introduction to the world of ballet, which she celebrates in her new Prime Video comedy series, Étoile, cocreated with her husband, Daniel Palladino.

“I trained as a dancer all the way until becoming a writer. I do think that if you love something like dancing, it gets inside of you. It affects everything about you. And if you love it, it never quite leaves you.”

The creator-writer-directors shared insights into their creative process alongside their stars at Tuesday night’s FYC event for their Prime Video comedy, alongside stars Luke Kirby (who plays Jack), Gideon Glick (Tobias), Ivan du Pontavice (Gabin), David Alvarez (Gael), Yanic Truesdale (Raphael), Simon Callow (Crispin Shamblee), and Tais Vinolo (Mishi).

‘Étoile’ Team Explains How Their Ballet-Centric Series Sounds Alarm On “Fragility Of The Arts”
Image
Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino have embarked on their second foray into the world of ballet with their latest series, Prime Video’s Étoile.

After previously working for one season on the 2012 drama Bunheads, Sherman-Palladino says her desire to tell another ballet-centric story was fueled by one thing: “vengeance.”

She’s joking, sort of.

“I wasn’t done, and I figured, let’s go back,” she said at the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience. “The first time, it was more about coming of age, and then 10 years later, I assume they’ve all come of age. We thought, how fun it would be to go backstage into if they become professional ballerinas?”

See the panel discussion in the video here and photos of the event below.

Jeremy Renner Turned Down MCU Return for 'Hawkeye' Season 2 After Being Offered Half Pay
Image
Jeremy Renner has portrayed Clint Barton/Hawkeye in seven projects related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his last appearance as the character was in the Disney+ miniseries Hawkeye, which premiered in 2021. Since then, Renner has showcased that he is much stronger than any superhero following his miraculous recovery from a snowplow accident at the top of 2023, which nearly cost him his life. Following the life-changing incident, Renner steadily got back to work on other projects but has still been absent from the MCU. As it turns out, the actor was offered a return as Clint Barton for another season of Hawkeye, but his offer to reprise the role was insulting at best.

During an interview with High Performance, Renner revealed that he was offered "half" of what he made for the first season of Hawkeye to return for Season 2. While he didn't reveal the exact amount, it's obvious it...

‘Étoile’ Creators Amy Sherman-Palladino & Daniel Palladino Won’t Work Without Kelly Bishop: ‘We Couldn’t Break the Streak’
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Étoile Season 1.] When it comes to frenetic television, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino have certainly cornered the market between Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. And with their latest venture, Étoile, the duo captures the intense world of ballet from two perspectives: New York City and Paris. They’ve also brought a familiar face along for their next ride. The series follows as the ballet companies from both cities swap choreographers and dancers to refresh interest in ticket sales and revitalize the overall interest and preservation of the performance art. This move is juxtaposed with the reality that much of the funding for this stunt comes from businessman Crispin Shamblee (Simon Callow), who made his profits off of weapons manufacturing and pollution-causing ventures. This is a particularly hard pill for Parisian ballerina Cheyenne (Lou de Laâge) — who is a climate change activist when she’s not twirling across the...

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fans, your new favorite show just premiered on Prime Video
Image
If you miss The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Prime Video has a brand new show from the same creator that's a must-watch!

Prime Video has been known for some big shows, although not as much of an awards darling as other streamers. A major exception was The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, the writer/producer behind the beloved The WB/The CW dramedy Gilmore Girls, the series focused on Midge Maisel, a 1950s housewife who, after discovering her husband’s cheating, embarks on a career as a stand-up comic.

The show was a huge success not just with audiences but critics as well. It’s the most honored Prime Video original show with multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG award wins for stars Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein, and Tony Shalhoub. Sherman-Palladino herself earned Emmys for Best Comedy Series and her writing.

Étoile Season 1 Review: A Balletic Spectacle with Sharp Wit
Image
When two premier ballet companies agree to swap their leading lights for a year, the gesture reads less like artistic generosity and more like a cultural Marshall Plan (minus the guitars). Post-pandemic, with audiences thinned out and endowments under siege, Jack McMillan and Geneviève Lavigne—each tethered to their city’s legacy—must treat their dancers as both ambassadors and assets. Crispin Shamblee bankrolls the operation, a benefactor who might as well wear a powder-blue cape labeled “Philanthro-Villain.”

The series unfolds over eight hour-long episodes that feel bifurcated—Act I’s tentative overtures give way to Act II’s combustible reckonings. Midseason, just as the Nutcracker looms, the narrative pivots so sharply it threatens to send you flying off your seat (or pointe shoe). Time is marked by rehearsals, ticket launches and whispered backstage politics, though occasionally one wishes for actual clock faces.

New York’s rehearsal rooms gleam with industrial chic; Paris’s theaters,...

‘Mrs. Maisel’ Team’s New Ballet Comedy ‘Étoile’ Trips Over Itself: TV Review
Image
Light years away from Stars Hollow and the comedy clubs of 1950s New York City, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s latest dramedy, “Étoile,” delves into the milieu of professional ballet. The series spotlights New York City’s Metropolitan Ballet Theatre, run by executive director Jack McMillan (Luke Kirby), and Paris’ Le Ballet National, managed by interim director Geneviève Lavigne (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Amid sluggish ticket sales, a post-covid dancer exodus and a dwindling audience, Jack and Geneviève hatch an ambitious plan to swap their top performers for one year to bring more visibility to both companies. While the dancing is stunning, and some characters have a few amusing traits, “Étoile” is an exhausting show centering a slew of insufferable people obsessed with hearing themselves speak.

“Étoile,” which refers to a company’s principal dancer, opens as a young girl, SuSu Li (Lamay Zhang), dances alone in the darkened practice room at the Metropolitan Ballet.

‘Étoile’ Review: Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg Anchor Amy Sherman-Palladino’s Grand Dance Drama
Image
Since “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” ended its 22-time Emmy-winning run in 2023, TV series have been awfully short on temperamental artists, fast-talking New Yorkers and whip-smart female characters. The new Prime Video series “Étoile” boasts all of those things — plus pouty Parisians, complex choreography and the most leg warmers you’ve seen since the 1980s.

For their much-anticipated follow-up to “Maisel,” husband-wife writing-producing team Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino chose to leap into the rarified world of classical dance, spotlighting two fictional companies, the Metropolitan Ballet Theater in New York and Le Ballet National in Paris. Their anxious but charismatic leaders — Jack McMillan and Geneviève Lavigne, respectively — agree to a single-year foreign-exchange, swapping their top artists — dancers, choreographers, conductors — in order to boost ticket sales and revitalize interest in a centuries-old art form. “A lot of our dancers have abandoned toe shoes for TikTok, the dressing rooms are filled with screaming...

‘Étoile’ Review: Amy Sherman-Palladino’s Amazon Ballet Dramedy Pirouettes Gracefully Before Stumbling in the Final Act
Image
Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has the Emmys and The WB’s Gilmore Girls has the two decades of snowballing affection, but if I’m feeling contrary — and I’m usually feeling contrary — I’ll say that my favorite Amy Sherman-Palladino show is Bunheads.

Because Bunheads only consists of 18 episodes, it’s all potential. It started bumpy, found its voice completely and then ABC Family canceled it, so I can eternally believe it never would have been marred by Sherman-Palladino’s inevitable flirtations with tweeness or her insatiable appetite for ramming her characters into narrative brick walls. It’s pure, delightful, perfectly cast Sherman-Palladino goodness.

Bunheads was also a show about potential. Its key characters were budding ballet dancers, which allowed the show to avoid the challenges of depicting excellence — pressures that Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino struggled with when it came to Midge Maisel and her comedy — and concentrate,...

'Why Isn't Rory Having Sex?' Gilmore Girls Creator Recalls Challenges and 'Weird' Notes From the Network After Premiere
Image
Gilmore Girls premiered in 2000 and ran for seven seasons, becoming a cult classic since. Although the show's final episode was in 2007, it returned with a limited series revival in 2016.

The series, which follows mother-daughter duo Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, has won the hearts of millions across the globe, and it's a comfort show many people rewatch often. However, its journey was not easy. At the PaleyFest LA, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino revealed the "weird" notes and distrust the network had in her ahead of the premiere, per The Hollywood Reporter.

At the convention, Sherman-Palladino was joined by her husband/ writing partner Daniel Palladino, Gilmore Girls stars Lauren Graham (Lorelai) and Kelly Bishop (Emily), and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein, and Luke Kirby, as well as Charlotte Gainsbour and Lou de Laâge from the creator's upcoming series Étoile.

Amazon’s ‘Etoile’ Trailer Crosses the Atlantic for Balletic Comedy
Image
Prime Video has released a trailer for its forthcoming series Étoile, set in the world of ballet. It showcases both top-flight dancing and a possibly harebrained scheme that will fuel the series.

In the show, which comes from Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, the heads of two ballet companies — one in New York, one in Paris — strike a deal to swap their top dancers for a year in the hopes of reviving the fortunes of both. Maisel alum Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg play the heads of the two companies.

The trailer features some of the fast-paced dialogue that’s a hallmark of series from the Palladinos, along with sumptuous visuals and a lot of dance. Watch it below.

Prime Video picked up Étoile with a two-season order in 2023. The series, filmed in New York and Paris, is the second ballet-centric show for the Palladinos after...

Amy Sherman-Palladino’s Ballet Comedy ‘Étoile’ First Trailer Sees 2 Acclaimed Theaters Trying to Save the Art Form
Image
Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s ballet comedy “Étoile” marks the duo’s first series since the Emmy Award-winning “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Ballet dancers from New York City and Paris graced the screen in the first trailer for the dance drama.

In order to save their struggling ballet companies, two artistic heads of acclaimed ballet companies come up with a plan to trade their top talent to New York and Paris, respectively.

Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg argue with their principal dancers, convincing them to switch companies to save their world-renowned ballet companies from failing. Lou de Laâge plays Cheyenne, a hardened Parisian principal dancer, or an étoile, who struggles to acclimate to the New York company.

When certain dancers don’t quite adjust to the culture shock, the heads of the ballet companies must manage egos and mastermind a plan for how to save their art form and win over audiences.

This Controversial Best Picture Upset Enraged Fans, but I Agree With the Academy
Image
At 2025's 97th Academy Awards ceremony, 10 films vied to win Best Picture. However, the Oscars have not always included this many in the lineup. In fact, less than 30 years ago, there were only five nominees in the category. And the one that came away victorious in the 71st Academy Awards continues to be a controversial pick.

To some, Shakespeare in Love was an unexpected hit when it was released in 1998. Starring Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow (also named Best Actress), it excelled as a period drama and a fun historical reimagining. While some moviegoers continue to believe it did not earn its win, further reflection indicates that the Academy did, in fact, make the right decision.

Shakespeare in Love Faced Off Against Modern Classics Image via Miramax Films

Both critics and audiences tend to agree that Shakespeare in Love is a brilliant example of the romantic and period genres. However,...

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator's new show is coming to Prime Video sooner than you think
Image
We finally have a new series to look forward to from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, and we couldn't be more excited! It's been over a year since The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ended its run on Prime Video, so we'd say we've been waiting long enough. Thankfully, the wait is almost over! Sherman-Palladino has teamed up with Prime Video once again for her latest show, Étoile, co-created alongside her husband, Daniel Palladino.

Now, don't expect Étoile to be a carbon copy of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel—because it’s not. For starters, it’s a drama rather than a comedy-drama. However, we can probably expect there to still be some comedic moments in Étoile. It probably just won't be so heavy on the humor. Oh, and according to the show’s plot, we can definitely look forward to some dancing!

Snow White Star Rachel Zegler Reportedly Eyed For Female Lead In Disney+ The Phantom Of The Opera Adaptation
Image
Yet another adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera is in development for Disney+, and the project may now be honing in on its female lead.

According to scooper Mttsh, Rachel Zegler is being eyed to play Christine, the object of the titular Opera Ghost's obsession. Whether this means she's actually in talks for the role or simply someone the studio is interested in is not clear.

Titled Phantom, this YA take on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux will be directed and executive produced by Kenny Ortega, who has led two major Disney franchises with High School Musical and The Descendants.

It doesn't sound like Ortega's version will be changing up the basic premise, with the story focusing on Erik, "a mysterious, disfigured musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. He becomes obsessed with a young soprano, Christine, and manipulates events to make her the star of the opera.

The Secret Policeman's Ball (1979)
Rowan Atkinson at 70: his best films – ranked!
The Secret Policeman's Ball (1979)
To mark his birthday this week, we celebrate his versatility from bumbling Mr Bean to his punctilious headteacher in The Secret Policeman’s Ball

Atkinson is the bumbling Father Gerald, who praises “the Holy Goat”, invites the happy couple to be “Johned in matrimony” and asks the groom to take his bride to be his “awful wedded wife”. Cutaways to the congregation’s reactions – Hugh Grant snickering, Simon Callow stifling a guffaw – do little to convince us that Richard Curtis’s script is top-tier stuff. At least Atkinson brings some typically subtle modulations, such as the vicar’s premature flickers of smugness when he wrongly believes his worst malapropisms to be behind him.

How Star Wars Cost Mark Hamill a Lead Role in 'Amadeus'
Image
Playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise has been a blessing and a curse for Mark Hamill: a blessing because he has made millions of dollars and become more famous than he ever imagined, and a curse because the character has stuck with him throughout his adult life. Hamill has been a part of over 50 live-action and animated productions, yet for some reason, fans (and his peers) see him as nothing more than the Jedi Master who fought in the Galactic Civil War during the reign of the Galactic Empire. It’s a good problem to have.

Stephen Soucy
Merchant Ivory - Jennie Kermode - 19437
Stephen Soucy
Speak of Merchant Ivory and most people’s thoughts go straight to English stately homes, elegant costumes and stilted drawing room conversations. This is, however, reflective of only a tiny part of the studio’s output, and even then, the storylines are far from what is popularly assumed. Frequently critical of the aristocracy, if not outright satirical, it also did groundbreaking work around gender and sexuality, and challenged establishment narratives around colonialism. Stephen Soucy’s documentary traces its history across four decades as well as looking back at how its two creative spirits came to meet and moving further on to reflect on Ivory’s work since his partner’s death.

In doing so, it incorporates contributions from some of the most esteemed names in British cinema: Simon Callow, Vanessa Redgrave, Madhur Jaffrey, Emma Thompson – as well as popular stars like Hugh Grant and Helena Bonham-Carter. The voices of studio regulars who are no longer.

The Witcher Set Photos Reveal New Look At Liam Hemsworth As Geralt & First Glimpse Of A New Character
Image
Netflix recently revealed our first official look at Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia with a brief teaser promo for season 4 of The Witcher, but some new set photos give us arguably our best look yet at the actor fully suited-up as the titular monster hunter.

The shoot is believed to be winding down, with scenes for the final two episodes being filmed in North Wales around Llanberis, near Padarn Lake.

The recent third season of Netflix's fantasy adventure series was original Geralt actor Henry Cavill's last, as the Man of Steel star announced his decision to part ways with the streamer's adaptation of the best-selling novels back in 2022.

Hemsworth (The Hunger Games) will take over as Geralt from season 4 on, and these snaps show the actor standing alongside Laurence Fishburne, who will make his debut in season 4 as Regis. The photos also feature Meng’er Zhang as Milva, Eamon Farren as Cahir,...
