Miloš Forman's critically acclaimed biographical film Amadeus has found a new streaming home. The 1984 Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards starts streaming for free this month on Tubi. Other titles set to be added to Tubi's library include Oscar winners like Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Titanic, and Thelma & Louise.

The musical biopic was adapted by writer Peter Shaffer, who had already tackled the subject for his stage play in the late '70s. He was inspired by the 1830 stage play Mozart and Salieri by Russian playwright Alexander Pushkin. Amadeus follows Antonio Salieri's frequently debated contempt for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as the young musical prodigy revolutionized the musical scene in Vienna in the mid-1700s. Cast members from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s Étoile are sharing their complicated feelings over the classical ballet’s Prime Video cancellation, a show that was axed despite being given a two-season order.

Yanic Truesdale (who played Le Ballet National trainer Raphaël Marchand), Taïs Vinolo (French ballerina Mishi Duplessis) and Ivan du Pontavice (French dancer Gabin Roux) appeared at the Scad Lacoste Film Festival in France’s Provence region this weekend for a screening and Q&a, all of which was scheduled before the series’ renewal reversal.

Prime Video just canceled its ballet drama series Étoile after its first season, despite giving it a two-season order when it was first greenlit. The cancellation of Étoile comes as a major shock to the fans, as the ballet drama series ended on a cliffhanger, and now they have no way to see the resolution.

Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, the Prime Video series revolves around Jack McMillan and Geneviève Lavigne, the artistic directors of two world-renowned ballet companies, one in New York and one in Paris. In a desperate attempt to save their companies, they decide to exchange their most talented dancers.

Étoile stars Luke Kirby and Lou de Laâge in the lead roles with Charlotte Gainsbourg, Gideon Glick, David Alvarez, Ivan du Pontavice, Taïs Vinolo, David Haig, Lamay Zhang, and Simon Callow.

The curtain is down for “Étoile” at Prime Video. Despite receiving a two-season order when first greenlit, the Amazon ballet drama from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino was canceled at the Amazon streamer.

The series, which had originally received a two-year commitment from Amazon but pending an official green light for Season 2, ended on a cliffhanger.

The show was originally ordered when Jennifer Salke was in charge of Amazon MGM, and the change in management — Salke left that job in late March and MGM Amazon is now run by Prime Video boss Mike Hopkins — may have played a role.

But the show also struggled to find an audience on Prime Video. It debuted April 24 with all 8 episodes premiering, a now-rare release strategy for Amazon, as most Prime Video shows stream weekly.

The show will continue to receive support for its Emmy campaign in the comedy categories, so there's still a chance it will get some award recognition, even if it isn't getting a second season. The series was initially given a two-season order in 2023, making Étoile a rare case of a series not to move forward with another season after initially having an order put in for multiple.

Amazon’s Prime Video has canceled Étoile after a single season — even though the streamer had initially asked for two.

The news comes about six weeks after the series, from Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, premiered its full eight-episode season. Étoile is set in the world of ballet and centers on the heads of historic but struggling companies in New York and Paris (played by Maisel alum Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg) who decide to swap their principal dancers.

Prime Video gave the show a two-season, straight-to-series order in 2023 as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was in its final season. Such deals often have contingencies, however, by which a streamer or network can opt out after part of a multi-season order. That was the case with Étoile.

In the three weeks of Étoile’s release for which data is available, the show has not dented Nielsen’s top 10 streaming charts.

Étoile is taking its final bow, a little earlier than expected.

Exclusive: Adieu, Étoile. Prime Video is not proceeding with a second season of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s ballet drama series, Deadline has learned. The streamer and Amazon MGM Studios will continue to support the series’ Emmy campaign in the comedy categories.

In the Palladinos’ followup to their critical and commercial hit for Prime Video, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, they received a two-season initial pickup for Étoile in 2023. (Mrs. Maisel itself scored Prime Video’s first multi-year order with a two-season pickup in 2017 off a pilot. Étoile was ordered straight-to-series. )

“I trained as a dancer all the way until becoming a writer. I do think that if you love something like dancing, it gets inside of you. It affects everything about you. And if you love it, it never quite leaves you.”

Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino have embarked on their second foray into the world of ballet with their latest series, Prime Video’s Étoile.

After previously working for one season on the 2012 drama Bunheads, Sherman-Palladino says her desire to tell another ballet-centric story was fueled by one thing: “vengeance.”

She’s joking, sort of.

“I wasn’t done, and I figured, let’s go back,” she said at the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience. “The first time, it was more about coming of age, and then 10 years later, I assume they’ve all come of age. We thought, how fun it would be to go backstage into if they become professional ballerinas?”

Light years away from Stars Hollow and the comedy clubs of 1950s New York City, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s latest dramedy, “Étoile,” delves into the milieu of professional ballet. The series spotlights New York City’s Metropolitan Ballet Theatre, run by executive director Jack McMillan (Luke Kirby), and Paris’ Le Ballet National, managed by interim director Geneviève Lavigne (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Amid sluggish ticket sales, a post-covid dancer exodus and a dwindling audience, Jack and Geneviève hatch an ambitious plan to swap their top performers for one year to bring more visibility to both companies. While the dancing is stunning, and some characters have a few amusing traits, “Étoile” is an exhausting show centering a slew of insufferable people obsessed with hearing themselves speak.

“Étoile,” which refers to a company’s principal dancer, opens as a young girl, SuSu Li (Lamay Zhang), dances alone in the darkened practice room at the Metropolitan Ballet.

Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has the Emmys and The WB’s Gilmore Girls has the two decades of snowballing affection, but if I’m feeling contrary — and I’m usually feeling contrary — I’ll say that my favorite Amy Sherman-Palladino show is Bunheads.

Because Bunheads only consists of 18 episodes, it’s all potential. It started bumpy, found its voice completely and then ABC Family canceled it, so I can eternally believe it never would have been marred by Sherman-Palladino’s inevitable flirtations with tweeness or her insatiable appetite for ramming her characters into narrative brick walls. It’s pure, delightful, perfectly cast Sherman-Palladino goodness.

In order to save their struggling ballet companies, two artistic heads of acclaimed ballet companies come up with a plan to trade their top talent to New York and Paris, respectively.

Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg argue with their principal dancers, convincing them to switch companies to save their world-renowned ballet companies from failing. Lou de Laâge plays Cheyenne, a hardened Parisian principal dancer, or an étoile, who struggles to acclimate to the New York company.

When certain dancers don’t quite adjust to the culture shock, the heads of the ballet companies must manage egos and mastermind a plan for how to save their art form and win over audiences.

It's been over a year since The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ended its run on Prime Video, so we'd say we've been waiting long enough. Thankfully, the wait is almost over! Sherman-Palladino has teamed up with Prime Video once again for her latest show, Étoile, co-created alongside her husband, Daniel Palladino.

Now, don't expect Étoile to be a carbon copy of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel—because it’s not. For starters, it’s a drama rather than a comedy-drama. However, we can probably expect there to still be some comedic moments in Étoile. It probably just won't be so heavy on the humor. Oh, and according to the show’s plot, we can definitely look forward to some dancing!

Étoile, the latest venture from legendary TV producers Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, is coming to Prime Video on April 24. The French word for "star," Étoile (pronounced "ey-twal") is an eight-episode dance dramedy that's set in both New York and Paris. The plot follows two ballet companies that swap artists in order to survive. The cast of Étoile includes Luke Kirby, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Lou de Laâge, Gideon Glick, David Alvarez, Ivan du Pontavice, Taïs Vinolo, David Haig, Simon Callow, and Yanic Truesdale. This is the third show from the Palladinos after The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Gilmore Girls — and all three will be honored at the upcoming PaleyFest.

Yet another adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera is in development for Disney+, and the project may now be honing in on its female lead.

According to scooper Mttsh, Rachel Zegler is being eyed to play Christine, the object of the titular Opera Ghost's obsession. Whether this means she's actually in talks for the role or simply someone the studio is interested in is not clear.

Titled Phantom, this YA take on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux will be directed and executive produced by Kenny Ortega, who has led two major Disney franchises with High School Musical and The Descendants.

It doesn't sound like Ortega's version will be changing up the basic premise, with the story focusing on Erik, "a mysterious, disfigured musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. He becomes obsessed with a young soprano, Christine, and manipulates events to make her the star of the opera.

Atkinson is the bumbling Father Gerald, who praises “the Holy Goat”, invites the happy couple to be “Johned in matrimony” and asks the groom to take his bride to be his “awful wedded wife”. Cutaways to the congregation’s reactions – Hugh Grant snickering, Simon Callow stifling a guffaw – do little to convince us that Richard Curtis’s script is top-tier stuff. At least Atkinson brings some typically subtle modulations, such as the vicar’s premature flickers of smugness when he wrongly believes his worst malapropisms to be behind him.

Playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise has been a blessing and a curse for Mark Hamill: a blessing because he has made millions of dollars and become more famous than he ever imagined, and a curse because the character has stuck with him throughout his adult life. Hamill has been a part of over 50 live-action and animated productions, yet for some reason, fans (and his peers) see him as nothing more than the Jedi Master who fought in the Galactic Civil War during the reign of the Galactic Empire. It’s a good problem to have.
