Our Dear Watson, Casting Robert Carlyle as Sherlock Holmes Has Our Attention!
Image
If you’ve been following along with some of our Watson coverage, you’d know that the series didn’t always resonate with many of our writers at TV Fanatic.

Of course, Joshua Pleming raved about it and made his case for why this series was a sleeper hit.

CBS certainly recognized the value in it when it secured a sophomore season that was surprisingly long and more than expected for diehard Watson Fanatics.

(ABC/Jack Rowand)

But now, it seems that CBS is intent on proving just why this series is a massive hit because according to Deadline, our dear Sherlock Holmes will be featured in the sophomore season, and the iconic Once Upon a Time alum, Robert Carlyle, will be playing him.

If anyone can step into the loafers of such a legendary character, it’s Carlyle. And this is the type of exciting casting news that will...

Image
Sherlock Holmes is finally coming to Watson, and the actor playing the iconic character should look familiar. Robert Carlyle To Play Sherlock Holmes In ‘Watson’ Season 2
Image
Robert Carlyle is set to bring to life the legendary literary detective Sherlock Holmes in Season 2 of the CBS series Watson. Carlyle will appear in a recurring guest role, working opposite series lead Morris Chestnut, who plays Dr. John Watson.

The investigative medical drama is a modern version of one of history’s greatest detectives as he turns his attention from solving crimes to solving medical mysteries. While Watson’s team of “doc-tectives” may have defeated Moriarty (Randall Park) last season, they remain determined in Season 2 in their mission to investigate and treat the world’s rarest diseases for their clinic’s patients.

With his eyes fixed on the future, Watson faces an unexpected twist when Sherlock Holmes, who was presumed dead, resurfaces, forcing him to confront a buried secret from his past — one that lies hidden within his own body.

Countdown Season 1 Episode 8 Review: The Nail In the Chair
Image
My biggest problem with Countdown is how a lot seems to be happening, but at the same time, nothing is happening.

At this rate, I’ve given up trying to anticipate what I want from an episode and will be enjoying the ride.

The story is one of the messiest and mediocre I’ve seen in a long time, but the technical aspects are great. The format works like the formula of a joke at a stand-up show: setups and punchlines. And that’s enough for now.

(Prime Video [Screeenshot])

Countdown Season 1 Episode 8 does nothing different from its predecessors. We still have our team that continues their hunt for Volcheck, but in a laissez-faire manner. For some reason, it feels like they are all in the same five-mile radius, yet Volcheck slips through.

If this team is given another season, they need to be retrained by their respective agencies, as this...

5 Things Murder in a Small Town Needs to Fix in Season 2

While Fox’s fall schedule is light on scripted programming, Murder in a Small Town is on it.

The blue-sky procedural was renewed for a second season in January, delighting the series’ small but passionate fan base.

Murder in a Small Town Season 1 featured some intriguing cases, but the series excelled because of Karl and Cassandra’s relationship.

Industry Season 4 Is Already Tanking Before It Airs
Image
Back in 2020, at the height of the pandemic, a show with a relatively unknown cast and creatives premiered on HBO in the US and BBC in the UK. Five years later, Industry is close to being as mainstream as The White Lotus.

Set in the banking and investment world, it followed a group of twenty-somethings who had just left university with the promise of fortune in the finance industry.

Industry worked for many reasons. People familiar with the subject matter created the series, and although it used a lot of financial jargon, it was as easy to follow as it was to understand what everyone was saying.

( Simon Ridgway/HBO)

At the core were the youngsters who were hungry to make a mark in this industry. All gritty in their way, they were willing to fight tooth and nail to be noticed, and that gave birth to some interesting dynamics and storylines.

‘Trainspotting’s’ Robert Carlyle Directing Short Film ‘Three,’ Starring Victoria Hamilton, Isaac Gryn and Nicholas Rowe (Exclusive)
Image
“Trainspotting” and “The Full Monty” star Robert Carlyle is returning to the director’s chair with the short film “Three.”

The short is led by Victoria Hamilton (“The Crown”), Isaac Gryn (“The Performance”) and Nicholas Rowe (“Young Sherlock”) and marks Carlyle’s first directorial effort since his debut in 2015 with “The Legend of Barney Thomson.”

“Three” follows a young man named Matt (Gryn), “who is invited into the home of a wealthy older couple for late-night drinks,” according to the film’s synopsis. “As the conversation deepens and the mood shifts, a tense and seductive game of control begins to unfold, revealing uncomfortable truths about power, sex and privilege.”

Co-written by Gryn and Patrick McPherson (“The Man”), “Three” has just wrapped post-production (see behind-the-scene photos taken by Anaïs Gallagher below) and is now being submitted to international film festivals. It serves as a proof-of-concept for a feature that is currently in development.

Los Angeles production down again in Q2 as enhanced incentives promise revival
Image
On-location production in the Greater Los Angeles area over the second quarter of 2025 was down 6.2% on the previous year, with feature shooting off by more than 21%, according to the latest report from FilmLA, the official film office for the city and county of Los Angeles.

The report confirmed the slump in production detailed in April by FilmLA’s first quarter statistics, which showed an even bigger decline of 22% in overall production.

However the new figures come just one month after California legislators approved a major enhancement of the state’s production tax credit programme and a doubling of the programme’s annual funding to $750m.

‘Tulsa King’ Star, 44, Still Thinks His Underrated Fantasy Movie Deserved a Full Trilogy [Exclusive]
Image
Over 20 years after its release, fans of Eragon are still waiting for the fantasy novel to get a proper adaptation. Progress on Disney+'s series has been slowly creeping along since its announcement back in 2022, and 20th Century Fox's 2006 film famously fell flat with brutal reviews and an underwhelming $250 million box office haul. One person who still laments how the big-screen take on Christopher Paolini's 2002 novel panned out is Garrett Hedlund, who embodied the antihero archer Murtaugh. The original plan was for a trilogy, capturing the sweeping epic of The Inheritance Cycle from the moment Eragon and his dragon Saphira first take flight to their final confrontation with the evil King Galbatorix. If it were up to the Tron: Legacy star, that franchise would've come to fruition given that it remains one of his most positive filmmaking experiences.

Hedlund recently joined his Tulsa King co-star Frank Grillo for...

New JFK Assassination Thriller Casts Legendary ‘Pulp Fiction’ Actor, 71, In Lead Role

A new look at the assassination of John F. Kennedy is coming to theaters. November 1963, a historical thriller centering around the Mafia figures in Kennedy's orbit, has entered production in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The film will star John Travolta, and is helmed by two-time Oscar nominee Roland Joffé (The Killing Fields). The film is based on firsthand accounts and reports from the family of Sam Giancana, the contemporary head of the Chicago Outfit; Giancana had ties to Kennedy's family, even as Kennedy's brother, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, took on the Mafia. Giancana is widely rumored to have been involved with Kennedy's assassination by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963; Giancana was murdered in his suburban Chicago home by an unknown assassin in 1975.

The film is written and produced by Nicholas Celozzi, who is the grandnephew of Giancana. Says Celozzi, "The whole essence of the story, the project, why we are doing this,...

Before 'Predator: Badlands' Slices Into Theaters, Disney+ Adds Two Gory R-Rated Horror Films as Spooky Season Approaches

Disney has been slowly and steadily changing its streaming content strategy in the past few years. R-Rated content is proving quite popular on the streamer with films like Deadpool & Wolverine, John Wick franchise, and such frequently topping the charts. Continuing its streak the giant has added two new R-rated movies for fans just in time for spooky season.

Per Comic Book, Alien: Romulus and 28 Weeks Later have been added to the Disney+ roster. The standalone sequel to Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later has made it in time to the streamer, given the third movie in the franchise, 28 Years Later, is entertaining fans in theatres. For audiences looking to refresh their memory before watching the new movie starring Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, this is the right time to binge on streaming.

28 Weeks Later (2007) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image

28 Days Later was a surprise hit with critics, audiences, and the box office alike because it came out of nowhere and felt like no film ever before it. An astounding feat all on its own, but even more so when you consider it did all this as a zombie movie. Well, they aren’t zombies. But you get what I mean. When it was over, and that plane flew over Jim, Selena, Hanna, and their handmade Hell sign… nope… Help sign, everyone wanted to know what happened next. Not only to them… but to the rest of the world. Which left director Danny Boyle and company in quite a predicament. How do you follow up a one-of-a-kind hit film that feels like no other when there is no surprise element anymore, your lead actors, and even you yourself aren’t available due to scheduling issues? It’s...

Ahead of the hotly anticipated Happy Gilmore sequel, Happy Gilmore 2, another Adam Sandler movie is climbing the streaming charts and has overtaken a zombie horror film. Jason Statham and Chris Evans’ Forgotten 56% Rotten Tomatoes Thriller Gets Overtaken By ’28 Years Later’ at Global Box Office
Image
Hot off a franchise-best debut, director Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later is all set to pass the $100 million mark at the global box office this weekend. The movie made $60 million worldwide in its first three days of release and has since held up moderately well. On Monday, the zombie horror film grossed around $3 million domestically, pushing its running total to $32 million. The movie is Cellular, which also happened to feature none other than Chris Evans as the parallel lead.

Directed by the late David R. Ellis, who'll always be remembered for Snakes on a Plane, the movie debuted theatrically in 2004 and grossed $62 million worldwide. Cellular was produced on a reported budget of $25 million, which makes it a nifty little hit for both Statham,...

Danny Boyle 'couldn't make Slumdog Millionaire today'
Danny Boyle "wouldn’t be able to make" Slumdog Millionaire today. The 68-year-old filmmaker helmed the 2008 drama movie - which told the story of 18-year-old Jamal Malik from the Juhu slums of Mumbai - but Danny believes the acclaimed film was of its time and that the world has now moved on.He told the Guardian newspaper: "Yeah, we wouldn’t be able to make that now. And that’s how it should be. It’s time to reflect on all that. We have to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the mark that we’ve left on the world."The film - which starred Dev Patel and Freida Pinto - won a number of awards at the time, including seven BAFTA Awards and four Golden Globes. However, it received mixed reviews in India.Asked if the movie amounted to a form of colonialism, Danny replied: "No, no.

Danny Boyle was surprised by Trainspotting's impact
Danny Boyle never thought Trainspotting would transform his career. The 68-year-old director helmed the 1996 drama film - which starred the likes of Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle - but Danny never imagined that the movie would become such a huge success.Asked if he expected the film to kick-start his career, Danny told The Hollywood Reporter: "No. Absolutely not. "In fact, I remember there was a wave of disapproval of it building. They had shown a trailer or something on one of the TV movie shows here. And one of the prestigious critics said, 'Well, that looks shockingly irresponsible about drugs.' Things like that were building. "And then there was this journalist, Muriel Gray, and she wrote this piece about Irvine’s [Welsh] book, and about the film. She spoke with authority saying, 'You do not know what you are talking about,' all these people...

28 Weeks Later (2007) Review
Image
Sequels are a tricky business. For every Aliens, there’s a Speed 2. So when 28 Weeks Later arrived five years after Danny Boyle’s genre-redefining 28 Days Later, scepticism was understandable. Now, years later, and ahead of the release of the next film in the series, there seems to be more of an appreciation for the second part. One could argue that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s follow-up doesn’t just survive the comparison with the first film, it thrives on it, delivering a film that’s sharper, leaner, and in some ways even more brutal than its predecessor.

From the moment the opening sequence throws us into a rural farmhouse siege, it’s clear Fresnadillo understands what made the first film so potent: urgency. But where 28 Days Later built terror out of silence and isolation, 28 Weeks Later trades in chaos. Robert Carlyle’s Don, caught between a horde of infected and a split-second moral choice,...

The Sequel to Danny Boyle's $8 Million Horror Hit Featuring an MCU Star Takes a Bite Out of Streaming Competition
Image
There's no denying the impact 28 Days Later had on the horror genre. Although not technically the undead, the "infected" in the movie revitalized what was quickly becoming a tired zombie gimmick in film, breathing new life into the monsters whilst also holding a mirror up to society in a bleak and powerful way akin toDawn of the Dead. Danny Boyle's frenzied horror, led by Cillian Murphy’s breakout performance, is considered by many to be one of the genre's best.

However, fewer have indulged further into the franchise and tasted the flesh of the lesser-known sequel, 28 Weeks Later. Directed and co-written by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the 2007 installment follows siblings Tammy (Imogen Poots) and Andy (Mackintosh Muggleton), a pair of beacons in a bleak landscape with their genes thought to hold the cure to the Rage Virus. Alongside Poots and Muggleton, the movie also stars the big-name trio of Robert Carlyle,...

Jeremy Renner & Idris Elba's Zombie Movie Is A Hulu Hit 18 Years Later
Image
Streaming charts aren't just packed with empty impressions of what movies should be like. Try as they might to devalue the currency of moviemaking with slickly hollow fare like "The Electric State," the Russo brothers and their streaming overlords are yet to completely eradicate wonder and imagination from the film industry (though Joe Russo's vision of an A.I.-driven garbage future often seems as though it's fast-approaching). For the time being at least, there's still plenty of good stuff out there, and sometimes it finds its way onto the streaming charts, right alongside the dross.

If you take a look at Hulu's charts over the first half of 2025, we've seen some great stuff popping up in the rankings, from Chloe Fineman's critically acclaimed comedy to 2025's Best Picture winner "Anora." It's not just new stuff hitting the streaming charts, either. Often we'll see forgotten, overlooked, or...

28 Days Later's Original Sequel Is Coming To Streaming Weeks Before The Third Movie Hits Theaters
Image
28 Days Later’s terrifying first sequel is getting a new streaming home just weeks before the long-awaited third movie hits theaters. Danny Boyle’s visceral take on the zombie apocalypse wowed audiences when it hit cinema screens way back in 2002. The clock then spun forward to 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, revealing the world to still be in a precarious state thanks to the ongoing Rage Virus threat. Now, over two decades after the first film, the calendar is sweeping forward even more in 28 Years Later, which is set for release on June 20, 2025.

With just weeks to go before 28 Years Later makes its long-awaited debut, 28 Weeks Later is getting a new streaming home, coming to Hulu on June 1.

Did You Know: A third 28 Days Later film was being developed even as the second hit theaters, but rights issues held up production, and the film ultimately fell into development hell.
