Now, according to Fremantle COO Bob McCourt, things are heating up for a return of red swimsuits, daring rescues, and plenty of lifeguard drama. During an Nem event in Dubrovnik, Croatia, McCourt shared that "We’re in advanced talks with Fox in the U.S. about the Baywatch reboot," with a series order appearing to be close at hand. He says the newfound momentum for the series stems from Fremantle's extensive efforts to bring the original series to viewers through a dedicated Fast channel, which has since become the company's second most popular offering.

Baywatch alum Michael Newman has died, 18 years after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Newman died “from heart complications’ on Sunday, October 20, “surrounded by his family and friends,” his friend Matt Felker, who recently directed the Hulu docuseries After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, confirmed to People.

Newman became known for his role as lifeguard Mike “Newmie” Newman in NBC’s Baywatch, in which he appeared in 150 episodes from 1989 to 2000. Newman was the only cast member on the show who was actually a lifeguard. He had worked as an L.A. County lifeguard for 20 years, beginning at age 10 as a Santa Monica Junior Lifeguard.

ABC News Studio has released a trailer for After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, a four-part docuseries that hits Hulu on Wednesday, Aug. 28, and promises “a nostalgic and insightful exploration of the cultural phenomenon that defined an era.”

Baywatch debuted nearly 35 years ago, in September 1989, and aired on NBC and then in syndication until May 2001. (We don’t talk abut Baywatch Nights.) The series’ Og cast included David Hasselhoff, Parker Stevenson, Billy Warlock, Erika Eleniak and others, while subsequent additions included Pamela Anderson, Nicole Eggert, David Charvet, Alexandra Paul, Yasmine Bleeth, Traci Bingham, Carmen Electra and future Aquaman Jason Momoa.

It’s been 25 years since Lisa Rinna played Taylor McBride in “Melrose Place,” but she isn’t over it yet.

Fox and Fremantle are rebooting Baywatch with significant script and full commitment, bringing back iconic lifeguard drama to the screen. Lara Olsen is showrunner for this action-packed series featuring ocean rescues and the return of the iconic red bathing suits. Despite a failed 2017 movie reboot, Fox is reviving lifeguard-based shows, adding Rescue: Hi-Surf to the lineup in fall 2024.

A reboot of Baywatch is now in the works courtesy of Fox Entertainment and Fremantle. According to a report by Deadline, a new Baywatch series has now been given a “significant script plus penalty commitment,” suggesting that the studios have a lot of faith in the reboot project which, much like the original, will follow the lives and adventures of a team of lifeguards who patrol the beaches of Los Angeles County, California.

Private Practice, 90210, and Spinning Out’s Lara Olsen has written the Baywatch reboot series and will serve as showrunner.

Slow-motion isn’t just for Zack Snyder films anymore! A Baywatch reboot is in the works at Fox, and the beach will never be the same again! Fox is requesting a sizable script and a penalty deal for the time-honored (and arguably horny) lifeguard drama, with Fremantle and Fox Entertainment co-producing.

We’ve known about a Baywatch reboot since April when Deadline reported Fremantle’s desire to bring fun in the sun back to televisions. At the time, Fox was developing another lifeguard drama, Rescue: Hi-Surf, from John Wells Productions. Rescue, a co-production between Warner Bros. TV and Fox Entertainment, is still going forward, with a fall 2024 launch as the project’s window. Regardless of prepping Rescue: Hi-Surf, Fox is ready to hit the sands with more than one lifeguard drama, hence the Baywatch reboot.

Deadline revealed exclusively last April that Fremantle was working on a Baywatch remake. At the time, Fox already had started conversations with the indie studio for the potential series while also developing another lifeguard drama franchise, Rescue: Hi-Surf, from John Wells Prods. The latter, a co-production between Warner Bros. TV and Fox Entertainment, was subsequently picked up to series for the 2023-24 season; it is now on track for a fall 2024 launch due to strike-related delays.

Meanwhile, Fox remained interested in Baywatch, potentially as a summer series.

Brooke Burke is setting the record straight on the comments she recently made about Derek Hough.

The 52-year-old host and TV personality won season seven of Dancing With the Stars with the pro dancer, now judge, and during an appearance on Cheryl Burke‘s podcast, she said that dancing with him almost tempted her to have an affair.

At the time, she was married to actor and singer David Charvet.

“I just thought [Derek] was so young and green and safe. I had no idea he would be such a powerful, badass choreographer,” she said, adding, “Had I not been married… I would have actually hoped we would have had a love affair.”

Deadline understands that Fremantle has been developing a reboot of the classic beach drama series and has held early talks with a number of broadcasters and streamers.

The move would bring back one of the biggest shows of the late 1980s and 1990s as the trend towards rebooting classic IP continues. There are currently no creatives attached to the reboot.

The series made international stars of the likes of David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson.
