Lovingly filmed on the gritty 1970s streets in the Chicago of Andy Davis, the film features his brother Richard Davis as Ritchie, a white boy guitarist trying to break into a Southside rhythm and blues band that cooks with its own brand of Windy City soul. Based a bit on his brother’s actual circumstances, the film features actual singers and players of the era, including a magnificent performance by Gene Barge as Percy Price, the centerpiece cat in the story who ends up in a fate of celebration.

Celebrating its 45th anniversary, director Andrew Davis’ first film “Stony Island” will make its digital debut on major VOD platforms and DVD on Nov. 17. That same day, there will be a theatrical screening of the film at the Gene Siskel Center in Chicago. Following the one-night-only screening, Davis and his brother Richie Davis will host a Q&a session.

“Stony Island” tells the story of “two struggling musicians who buck the odds in their attempt to form an R&b band and take it on the road,” according to a release provided to Variety. It follows Richie Bloom, the only white kid on the block, who forms a band with his best friend Kevin Tucker. Aging sax legend Percy Price mentors them as they pull together a funky supergroup. Armed with little resources and facing heavy losses, the musicians must unite to make their smash debut.

Ava DuVernay’s latest drama “Origin” has added an original song to its Oscar prospects.

New Zealand Māori artist Stan Walker performed the new song, “I Am,” at a private film screening at the Edition Hotel in West Hollywood on Wednesday. He also co-wrote the track with Michael Fatkin, Vince Harder and Te Kanapu Anasta. The song enters a competitive race of Oscar hopefuls from movies such as “Barbie” and “Trolls Band Together.”

Walker would make history as the second Indigenous person, and the first Indigenous man, nominated for original song. Buffy Sainte-Marie became the first Indigenous person ever to win an Academy Award in 1982 for the song “Up Where We Belong” from “An Officer and a Gentleman.” Aside from Sainte-Marie, the only Indigenous Oscar winner in 95 years is Taika Waititi, who took home the adapted screenplay prize for “Jojo Rabbit” (2019).

Oprah Winfrey is a media mogul but before achieving all of that she starred in The Color Purple back in 1985. Her performance as Sofia in the Steven Spielberg-directed film went on to earn her a nomination at the Oscars.

Ahead of the film adaptation of The Color Purple musical, which Winfrey produces, she is looking back and remembering the amount of money she got for her role as Sofia. Although the paycheck wasn’t huge, Winfrey says the experience was life-changing.

“I can’t even begin to tell you what it means to me — a person who wanted nothing more in my life than to be in The Color Purple,” Winfrey told Essence magazine in an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike. “God taught me to surrender — that was the big lesson for me,” Oprah said. “They were only offering $35,000 to be in this film, and it is the best $35,000 I ever earned.

“Interview with the Vampire” got some new blood when it premiered on AMC as a TV series on Sunday, October 2. The new show was created by Rolin Jones and is based on the 1976 novel of the same name by Anne Rice. Critics took to the gothic story, which currently holds a freshness rating of 98 on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus reads, “With a playful tone and an expansive sweep that allows Anne Rice’s gothic opus to mull like a chalice of blood, Interview with the Vampire puts a stake through concerns that this story couldn’t be successfully resurrected.”

Anne Rice’s lusty, tormented vampires reshaped popular blood-sucking narratives for four decades, establishing a tone and template that influenced aspects of everything from True Blood to The Vampire Diaries and Twilight.

At the same time, Rice’s saga inspired countless attempts at contrast — stories about the undead that aimed to make vampires terrifying again (see something like 30 Days of Night) or to laugh at their torment (as in both movie and series versions of What We Do in the Shadows).

What may be most interesting about AMC’s adaptation of Rice’s seminal novel Interview With the Vampire is the sense that series creator Rolin Jones (HBO’s Perry Mason) is trying to split the difference — to give fans a Louis and Lestat that they’ll recognize, while at the same time taking a dehumidifier to some of Rice’s swampier prose.

As every network jockeys to own the shiniest piece of IP possible to attract distracted viewers, the best thing to say about any adaptation is that it honors the source material while also evolving it, believably and purposefully, to fit a new medium. AMC aims to do exactly that with “Interview With the Vampire,” the first installment of what it’s calling “The Immortal Universe,” having bought the rights to many of Anne Rice’s most iconic works. With both the books and evocative 1994 film to contend with, creator Rolin Jones (“Perry Mason”) took on an admittedly enormous challenge. How do you stay faithful to what makes Rice’s novels so popular while bringing something to the screen that the likes of Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and a tiny Kirsten Dunst didn’t?

Late Vampire Chronicles author Anne Rice was never completely onboard with the 1994 film adaptation of her book: Interview with the Vampire, which starred Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. Taking issue with casting and other certain liberties, Rice ultimately endorsed it, but denounced its 2002 sequel, Queen of the Damned, with Aaliyah in the title role. Rice and her son Christopher have been involved with AMC’s Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire through its own tortured journey to series adaptation, so it seems any changes to the source material come with tacit pre-approval.

Oscar- and Emmy-nominee Taraji P. Henson will star as Shug Avery in Blitz Bazawule’s “The Color Purple.”

The forthcoming Warner Bros. movie is an adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical, which is itself an adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The production is directed by Bazawule, best known for his work on Beyoncé’s “Black is King,” “The Burial of Kojo” and “Cherish the Day.”

Marcus Gardley (“The Chi”) wrote the screenplay, based on Alice Walker’s novel, the 1985 Warner Bros. Pictures film, and the stage musical.

H.E.R. will make her big-screen debut in the upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical version of The Color Purple.

The Grammy- and Oscar-winning singer is set to play Squeak — a juke joint waitress/aspiring singer — in the film adaptation produced by Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg, the 1985 film’s star and director, the Hollywood Reporter writes.

Rae Dawn Chong played the role of Squeak in the Spielberg film, while Krisha Marcano portrayed the character in the original Broadway cast.

H.E.R. has signed on for her first acting role, landing the part of Squeak in Blitz Bazawule’s forthcoming adaptation of “The Color Purple” for Warner Bros.

H.E.R. is already an Oscar winner, earning the best original song trophy in April for her song “Fight For You,” from Warner Bros.’ “Judas and the Black Messiah.” The singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist also has won four Grammys.

In her Variety cover story, the 23-year-old songstress expressed her desire to become a top musician and a top actor.

“There is so much I want to do. People don’t really get to see my comedic and fun side, except for when I’m impersonating my aunt,” she said, with a laugh. “But I definitely want to do a lot more voice-overs, and comedy, but also some serious roles.”

A movie featuring two actors I really like, John Jarrett (Wolf Creek) and Danielle Harris, as the leads had to be good, right? With Skin Collector I was going to find out.

I can say that when those two actors on screen together the film is at its best and the last third of the film features this a lot. They don’t necessarily have perfect chemistry but they are both very good actors and are putting in good performances, so it does work for the most part. Unfortunately, they are fighting against a really poor script, which at times has lines that I just shook my head at. Lines that it doesn’t feel like anybody would say in ‘real life’, let alone these characters.

As with most festivals in a pandemic world, Slamdance Film Festival is changing things up with their 2021 edition. Moving a few weeks back to February 12-25, no longer directly competing with Sundance Film Festival, the festival will be taking place primarily virtually. In quite a feat of accessibility, a full festival pass is also now available for free––if you secure yours by December 31st. After that, they are going up to $10, which is still a steal.

The festival has also announced its full lineup, with 25 features along with 107 shorts and episodic. Films, Q&As, and panels will be available on Slamdance.com, AppleTV, Roku, Firestick, and YouTube, while in-person events will take place in Joshua Tree with drive-ins open to the public on February 13th and 14th as well as the closing night screening at a Los Angeles drive-in on February 25.

Thanks to her work with the late Stuart Gordon, and to cult items like Chopping Mall, Barbara Crampton is a horror legend. Since her comeback with You’re Next, she’s done some interesting work and shown great acting chops, particularly in the underseen Sun Choke, but Reborn is evidence that she alone can’t elevate truly terrible material.

In a prologue, in the middle of a lightning storm, a creepy morgue attendant (Chaz Bono) discovers a baby, presumed stillborn, is alive and takes her home.
