Gene Hackman’s Forgotten Western Masterpiece Is Finally Streaming for Free
Image
Fifty years after its release, a classic Gene Hackman Western epic is coming to streaming — for free. Bite the Bullet, Richard Brooks' ode to the Old West, is coming to Tubi; it was one of seven Westerns Hackman made over the course of his career. The film, which currently holds a 75% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, will premiere on the free, ad-supported streamer on August 1.

The movie was directed by Brooks, who'd previously helmed In Cold Blood, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Elmer Gantry. He wanted Hackman to lead the picture, but he was already signed to star in French Connection II; after Brooks considered Paul Newman and Burt Reynolds, 20th Century Fox agreed to push back French Connection II to let Hackman star in the Western epic. The film contains one of Hackman's favorite scenes: in an interview with Film Comment in 1988, Hackman said, "I had a...

Watch the exclusive clip of Braeden on “Soapy” below.

In another clip, Braeden points out the difference between working on a soap and other genres, including primetime and theater work.

“People have no idea. Nighttime actors, theater actors… I’ve done it all, have no clue what we do.

Marty Ingels in Pac-Man (1982)
Atari & Espionage: Revisiting ‘Cloak & Dagger’
Marty Ingels in Pac-Man (1982)
Photo Credit: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Remember those days? Back when you’d cruise down to the local movie theater, plop down with a big tub of popcorn, and just lose yourself in a movie? No deep dissections, no endless online debates – just pure, unadulterated fun, thrills, and maybe a little bit of magic. That, my friends, was the 80s. It was a time when Atari was king, arcades hummed with the glow of Pac-Man and Space Invaders, and our imaginations were fueled by pixels and silver screens. If you’re looking for a perfect slice of that cinematic pie, look no further than 1984’s Cloak & Dagger. This film perfectly captures that awesome feeling when your childhood dreams of being a secret agent collided head-on with real-world adventure. It stars Henry Thomas, who you’ll remember as Elliott from E.T., this time as Davey Osborne. Davey’s a kid...

12 Best Movies Like The Devil Wears Prada
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

"The Devil Wears Prada" was released in 2006 and remains one of the most beloved films of the last two decades. The David Frankel film starred Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of the fictional Runway magazine in New York City. The movie was written by Aline Brosh McKenna and was based on Lauren Weisberger's 2003 novel of the same name. It's no secret that Miranda was inspired by Vogue editor Anna Wintour, but the fashion maven wasn't the singular blueprint for the role, as the character was also inspired by two surprising legendary Hollywood men.

The story follows Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, an aspiring journalist with little fashion sense, who ends up scoring a job as Miranda's second assistant. Between her disinterest in the magazine and Miranda's difficult behavior, it proves to be a tough job. As Andy begins to try harder,...

These Star Trek actors were considered for the role of Doc Brown in Back to the Future
Image
Star Trek fans surely got a kick out of seeing Star Trek III: The Search for Spock villain Christopher Lloyd co-starring as Doc Brown alongside Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly in Back to the Future. And those same fans no doubt loved it when Marty, disguised and masking his voice, identifies himself to his future father as “Darth Vader… from the planet Vulcan,” and proceeds to offer the patented split-fingered Vulcan greeting.

But… a document from 1984, from the office of Back to the Future’s casting directors, Fenton-Feinberg Casting, reveals that several other familiar Star Trek names were considered before director Robert Zemeckis chose Lloyd. Among those considered: Joe Piscopo, Rene Auberjonois, Paul Dooley, Kevin Conway, and Gerrit Graham. Piscopo later played The Comic in the Star Trek: The Next Generation second-season episode, “The Outrageous Okona,” which premiered in 1988. Auberjonois joined the Star Trek universe in 1991, playing Colonel West...

1944: Everything we know about the next Yellowstone prequel series
Image
What Do We Know About the upcoming Yellowstone prequel series 1944? More than you may think. The Paramount+ series is slated to continue the origin story of the Dutton family after the conclusion of 1923. From plot, casting news, and more, let’s dive in and look at what is coming up in the new addition to the Yellowstone franchise.

What is 1944 about?

While there is no official plot description for the still-in-development series, 1944 places the action roughly two decades after 1923, which was, in turn, set forty years after 1883. The original title of the Harrison Ford/Helen Mirren-led series was 1932, and the shift to ten years earlier could have been to create room for the eventual 1940s set continuation. The action shifting right in the middle of World War II could offer a glimpse of where characters featured in 1923 would end up at the next pivotal historical moment for the United States.

‘Yellowstone’ and the Sprawling Dutton Family Tree, Explained
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from 1883, 1923 and the Yellowstone season 5B finale.]

With each new series in the megahit Yellowstone franchise, a new generation of Duttons emerges. After launching in 2018 with Kevin Costner’s central patriarch John Dutton III and his immediate family, co-creator Taylor Sheridan traveled back in time to expand the family and introduce elder generations of Duttons, first with the single season of 1883 and then with the series 1923, which just released its second (and possibly final) season finale.

The Dutton family tree has branched out as Yellowstone has been airing, with the flagship series having aired what may have been its final episode with the season 5B finale in December 2024. (If you’re sensing a pattern, it’s because Paramount and Sheridan have not confirmed if Yellowstone and/or 1923 have officially ended.)

In 1883, viewers followed James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) on their family’s treacherous journey west through the Great Plains on...

Morgan Freeman Honors Gene Hackman in Oscars in Memoriam Segment, Tributes Paid to David Lynch and Shelley Duvall
Image
The Oscars In Memoriam tribute, set to Mozart’s “Requiem in D Minor,” began with a tribute from Morgan Freeman to his “Unforgiven” and “Under Suspicion” co-star Gene Hackman. Hackman, who was 95, was found dead last week in his Santa Fe home along with his wife, Betsy Arakawa.

“I had the pleasure of working alongside Gene on ‘Unforgiven’ and ‘Under Suspicion.’ I learned he was a generous performer and a man whose gifts elevated everyone’s work,” said Freeman. “He received two Oscars. He won the hearts of film lovers all over the world. Gene always said, ‘I don’t think about legacy, I just think people remember me as someone who tried to do good work.'”

Hackman won Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 1993 for playing a sadistic sheriff in Clint Eastwood’s “Unforgiven.” He also won Best Actor in a Leading Role for playing a broken...

Dave Chappelle’s Lengthy Monologue Bumped ‘SNL’s Tribute to David Lynch
Image
As the world continues to mourn the recent passing of David Lynch, this past weekend, the legendary artist and filmmaker received a shout-out from an unlikely source: Saturday Night Live.

Despite the fact that Lynch never hosted SNL and was never a cast member (at least not on this plane of reality), before the closing goodnights of the Dave Chappelle-hosted episode, the show aired a still photo of Lynch, as they did with Dabney Coleman after the former host died last year.

But, originally, the plan was to air a more substantial tribute to the late director — that is, until the show started running behind schedule.

Instead of just sticking a Jpeg of Lynch into the end of the show, according to LateNighter, during the episode’s dress rehearsal, the brief memorial would have been prefaced with a vintage clip of Roy Orbison singing “In Dreams” on SNL back...

1923 Season 2 Begins Solving Yellowstone's Dutton Family's Biggest Lingering Mystery
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for 1883, 1923, and Yellowstone!

The Duttons have a rich family tree supporting the Yellowstone franchise, and the second outing of 1923 can piece together a mysterious gap in the fabric of Taylor Sheridan's neo-Western. The Dutton family tree in Yellowstone begins with the story of Margaret and James Dutton in 1883. Real-life partners and country musicians Tim McGraw and Faith Hill kick off the Yellowstone timeline with their family's northwestern journey from Texas to Montana. The Yellowstone 1883 cast includes James and Margaret's children, John (Audie Rick) and Elsa (Isabel May) Dutton.

Sadly, the whole Dutton family barely survives the journey, and the Dutton timeline continues with James' brother, Harrison Ford's Jacob Dutton, in 1923. Paramount+ released the first season of the Depression-era saga on December 18, 2022, and the show is preparing for its comeback two years later. Jacob and his wife, Helen Mirren's Cara, take over the ranch when...

The Complete Yellowstone Dutton Family Tree Explained
Image
Watching Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" franchise in chronological order takes viewers on a violent journey that begins in the 19th century and escalates into the modern age. The story follows several generations of the Dutton family — from the pioneers who built the Yellowstone ranch to the contemporary cowboys who fight to preserve it — as they deal with the ruthless corporations, politicians, and assassins who want to force modernity on their way of life.

The Duttons are the enemies of progress, and when you've met one of these stubborn rascals, you've met most of them. While there are exceptions, these cowboys and their kin are usually strong-minded, tough, and up for a fight. However, it's quite difficult to keep track of every family member, as the bloodline goes way back and Taylor Sheridan keeps adding to their ranks courtesy of spin-offs like "1883" and "1923" — and there are more on the way.

The Thursday Night NBC Plunged Itself Into Darkness
Image
“The One with the Blackout,” the seventh episode of “Friends’” inaugural season, was notable for several reasons. It first introduced viewers to both the gang’s miserly broomstick-waving neighbor Mr. Heckles and Ross’ first rival for Rachel’s affections, Italian stallion Paolo. It apparently added the term ‘friend zone’ to the English lexicon as a result. And, as its title suggests, it formed part of an ingenious marketing strategy in which three NBC sitcoms were deliberately plunged into darkness.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this month (November 3), Blackout Thursday was the brainwave of Dan Holm, a promotional producer also responsible for the term ‘Must See TV.’ Alongside the comedy that would prove to be the network’s most successful, the programming stunt also included one of the many forgettable one-seasoners that failed to ride its coattails, the Dabney Coleman-starring “Madman of the People,” and the 12-time Emmy-winning “Mad About You.

Road Games (1981) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Jamie Lee Curtis
When you look at the true legacy of a scream queen there are a lot of options out there to choose from. When looking at the top of the heap though? I’d argue that there really is only one option. Jamie Lee Curtis has been making horror movies in 6 different decades now and while a lot of them are directly tied to her most famous franchise with 7 of her horror films being in the Halloween series, there’s so much more. In fact, her run from 1978 to 1981 includes the likes of Halloween 1 and 2, The Fog, Terror Train, and Prom Night. All of those movies have now been remade and are considered classics but there is one in there that doesn’t get talked about enough, was a bomb when it came out, but keeps getting better with age. While Halloween II came out and stole the spotlight in 1981, Road Games...

A Character Actor You Loved To Hate Almost Played The Professor On Gilligan's Island
Image
Say what you will about "Gilligan's Island," but the critically derided 1960s sitcom knew its audience and pandered to them with buffoonish élan. Though that audience didn't fully materialize until after the series' cancellation in 1967, decades of successful syndication is all the proof you need to acknowledge that creator Sherwood Schwartz (who also brought together "The Brady Bunch") was some kind of low-aiming visionary.

Those of us who blew countless hours of our childhood hanging with the castaways on that uncharted desert isle somewhere in the Pacific Ocean owe Schwartz a debt of gratitude. Watching Bob Denver's Gilligan ineptly ensure that the Skipper (Alan Hale Jr.) and the passengers of the S.S. Minnow remain stranded on that tropical patch of earth made not doing chores and/or homework a brain-numbing joy. Yes, the jokes were awful and the plots shamelessly recycled, but there was something strangely compelling about Schwartz's dramatis personae.

Diablo Cody gives updates on 9 to 5 remake and Death of a Pop Star adaptation
Michael Cera and Elliot Page in Juno (2007)
More than a year ago, it was announced that Oscar-winning Juno writer Diablo Cody was set to produce a film based on Violet Karim’s webcomic Death of a Pop Star. Just three months ago, we heard that Cody would be writing the screenplay for a remake of the iconic 1980 comedy 9 to 5. Now, we have updates on both of those projects, as Entertainment Weekly reported that, during an appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con, Cody revealed that she has already finished writing the script for the 9 to 5 remake, but the Death of a Pop Star adaptation is still in the development phase.

Directed by Colin Higgins, who also wrote the screenplay with Patricia Resnick, the original 9 to 5 was an office satire about three female secretaries who decide to get revenge on their tyrannical, sexist boss by abducting him and running the business themselves. The trio, one...

Diablo Cody's 9 To 5 Remake Will Focus On Gen Z Vs. Boomers In The Workplace
Image
Diablo Cody has completed the script for the remake of the 1980 workplace comedy 9 to 5. At Comic-Con 2024, she revealed that the new version will focus on the cultural clash between Gen Z and boomers in a modern office setting. Interestingly enough, the twist will highlight both differences in generational approach and the corporate world.

Speaking of which, the corporate landscape has changed significantly since the original 9 to 5 was released. With the rise of technology, opportunities to work remotely, and greater focus on work-life balance, Gen Z has turned the workplace around. The shift is a contrast to the boomer generation, who were often expected to suck it up and follow corporate norms. Watching it all play out on screen will be refreshing. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cody expressed her excitement about the project and elaborated on how fun it is for her to draw the line between the two generations.

‘My Spy The Eternal City’ Review: Dave Bautista Anchors a Kiddie Espionage Caper That’s Too Generic to Fly
Image
The James Bond jetpack sequence in “Thunderball” (1965) was a cheesy-awesome thing that was like, “Whoa! The future will be jetpacks!” “My Spy the Eternal City” opens like a Bond film, or maybe a movie whose goal is to make the “Kingsman” series look weighty. Dave Bautista’s JJ, a former Special Forces soldier turned CIA operative, is on a private plane, where he’s playing bodyguard to a teen idol named Ryan (Bill Barratt). Out of the blue, he’s attacked by the flight attendant. As they go at each other with sharp objects, a helmeted figure zips through the sky in a jetpack, placing a bomb on one of the plane’s windows and blowing a hole in its side; everyone comes tumbling out, and a plunging-to-the-earth scuffle ensues.

The hook? The jetpack flier is Sophie (Chloe Coleman), a 14-year-old spy. While falling through the air and rescuing JJ,...

Martin Mull, who played Colonel Mustard in Clue, Roseanne’s boss Leon Carp in the ABC comedy Roseanne and starred on Norman Lear’s Fernwood 2 Nite, died Thursday at his home. He was 80.

The news was revealed by his daughter Maggie Mull, an exec producer on Family Guy.

“I am heartbroken to share that my father passed away at home on June 27th, after a valiant fight against a long illness. He was known for excelling at every creative discipline imaginable and also for doing Red Roof Inn commercials. He would find that joke funny. He was never not funny. My dad will be deeply missed by his wife and daughter, by his friends and coworkers, by fellow artists and comedians and musicians, and—the sign of a truly exceptional person—by many, many dogs. I loved him tremendously,” she wrote.

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin ‘Eager’ to See Jennifer Aniston’s ‘9 to 5’ Remake: ‘It’s a Hard Nut to Crack’
Image
Forty-four years after “9 to 5” became a cinematic sensation and rally cry for women’s rights, stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin reunited to celebrate the Hollywood premiere of the documentary “Still Working 9 to 5.”

The original comedy followed a trio of office workers conspiring to put a check on their “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” of a boss, played by the late Dabney Coleman. In April, it was announced that Jennifer Aniston’s Echo Films was set to produce a “reimagining” of the movie for 20th Century Studios.

“We hope she has great success,” Tomlin told Variety. “It’s a hard nut to crack because the issues are somewhat different.”

“I hope she does it,” Fonda interjected.

“There’s still the undercurrent of the same kind of negativity towards females … [they’re] not easy-to-solve issues. So we’re very eager to see what they do,” Tomlin added.

Dabney Colemans 1984 Spy Thriller Is a Timeless Classic

Quick Links Davey Osborne Creates a Fantasy World and an Imaginary Hero Cloak & Dagger Is a Hitchcockian Children's Thriller Jack Flack Always Escapes Until Children Stop Believing Cloak & Dagger tiptoes the line between thrilling and too dark for kids by placing a child in danger without going too far. The film blends fantasy and thriller elements, borrowing a style from Alfred Hitchcock to create a unique viewing experience. By portraying villains as one-dimensional automata, Cloak & Dagger keeps a light tone despite its intense storyline.

When a film places a child in danger, as is the case throughout the 1984 childrens action-adventure film Cloak & Dagger, such a film risks offending an audiences sensibilities. The Hard Way (1991): The Best Movie You Never Saw
Image
The 80s and 90s were a great time for character actors. Guys like Gene Hackman, Brian Dennehy, Christopher Walken, John Lithgow, Morgan Freeman and many others occupied this really interesting place where they could lead their own movies and be just as comfortable playing supporting roles – whether large or small – in bigger films without worrying about things legit movie stars have to, such as bankability. Of that era, one of the biggest character actors was no doubt the fast-talking James Woods. In the eighties, his star rose thanks to movies like Videodrome, Salvador, True Believer and many others. While he never became a legit box office superstar, he was in that niche place where he could lead his own movies, such as the underrated Best Seller, while also playing plum supporting roles in movies like Chaplin, The Specialist and Casino. He was noted as one of the town’s biggest scene-stealers,...

Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton, Dabney Coleman, and Lily Tomlin in 9 to 5 (1980)
Prolific actor who, in 1980s films such as 9 to 5 and Tootsie, came to define the misogynistic archetype of a generation

In the 1980 office comedy hit film 9 to 5, Jane Fonda, as one of three long-suffering office workers subjected to endless harassment by their male chauvinist boss, played by Dabney Coleman, eventually gets to call him a “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical, bigot”, albeit in her imagination. These epithets could apply to a majority of the many roles played by Coleman, who has died aged 92.

With thinning hair and a fleshy, seemingly friendly face, adorned more often than not with a sly moustache, Coleman made his long career portraying deceptively ordinary, slippery bastards. He played “the man you love to hate” in both dramas and comedies in a similar straight fashion.

Fans of Yellowstone are waiting to see how the series ends, which will happen with the upcoming second part of Season 5. The series has taken a big step with wrapping up the show with cameras rolling on the final episodes.

Per Deadline, production has officially started on Season 5, Part 2 of Yellowstone in Montana. The update comes as the show has been on hiatus since January 2023, and the final batch of episodes is expected to debut in November. The delay in filming could also potentially open the door for Kevin Costner to return after all for the end of the series following his controversial exit last year. ‘SNL’ Season 49 Finale Sets Stage For Anniversary As Cast Leave Possible Goodbyes For Next Year
Image
There are a plenty of longtime Saturday Night cast members, yet there were no big exits — or hints of departures — on tonight’s Season 49 finale of the venerable NBC late-night program.

No SNL veterans were tearing up at the end of their sketches like Kate McKinnon did in the 2022 finale, it was all smiles and fist bumps at the curtain call, and, after another brutal joke swap, Colin Jost and Michael Che wrapped their 10th season together on Weekend Update by wishing everyone a great summer.

This was to be expected, given that no one from this year’s 17-strong troupe would willingly miss next year’s big celebrations – The Big 50.

Host Jake Gyllenhaal set the stage for what is to come in his opening monologue, noting that the finale was “the last episode before the big anniversary season.”

Jon Hamm Cameos As ‘SNL’ Parodies Spate Of Random Attacks On Actors In NYC: “Stop Punching Character Actors In The Face”
Image
The recent assault on Steve Buscemi on the streets of New York City spawned a skit for SNL that featured Jake Gyllenhaal as an NYPD sergeant urging bad guys to “stop punching character actors in the face.”

Speaking at a press conference for reporters, Gyllenhaal called character actors “the life blood of the entertainment industry” and expressed concern about the assaults on these “national treasures.” He said the attack on Buscemi followed similar ones on Rick Moranis and the “shocking versatile Michael Stuhlbarg.”

He went on to define character actors as “actors who faces you can remember but names you cannot,” including anyone “who has ever been on the TV show Boardwalk Empire, you have a face that makes casting directors go ‘oh interesting,'” and “your IMDb page has over 100 entries, but all your characters just have a first name.”
