Fifty years after its release, a classic Gene Hackman Western epic is coming to streaming — for free. Bite the Bullet, Richard Brooks' ode to the Old West, is coming to Tubi; it was one of seven Westerns Hackman made over the course of his career. The film, which currently holds a 75% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, will premiere on the free, ad-supported streamer on August 1.

The movie was directed by Brooks, who'd previously helmed In Cold Blood, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Elmer Gantry. He wanted Hackman to lead the picture, but he was already signed to star in French Connection II; after Brooks considered Paul Newman and Burt Reynolds, 20th Century Fox agreed to push back French Connection II to let Hackman star in the Western epic. In the premiere episode of the audio and video podcast series “Soapy Hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart,” hosts Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart sat down with their first guest, “The Young and the Restless” star Eric Braeden (Victor Newman).

In an exclusive clip released to Soap Opera Network, Braeden reveals how the late Dabney Coleman played a part in his decision to meet with CBS executives and notes that he was initially only supposed to do three months on the show, but it ended up becoming a long-lasting career in daytime television that has since spanned more than 45 years.

What is 1944 about?

While there is no official plot description for the still-in-development series, 1944 places the action roughly two decades after 1923, which was, in turn, set forty years after 1883. The original title of the Harrison Ford/Helen Mirren-led series was 1932, and the shift to ten years earlier could have been to create room for the eventual 1940s set continuation. The action shifting right in the middle of World War II could offer a glimpse of where characters featured in 1923 would end up at the next pivotal historical moment for the United States.

With each new series in the megahit Yellowstone franchise, a new generation of Duttons emerges. After launching in 2018 with Kevin Costner’s central patriarch John Dutton III and his immediate family, co-creator Taylor Sheridan traveled back in time to expand the family and introduce elder generations of Duttons, first with the single season of 1883 and then with the series 1923, which just released its second (and possibly final) season finale.

Late actor Gene Hackman was given a special tribute at the Academy Awards. The acknowledgment kicked off the In Memoriam segment for the Oscars this year following the recent passing of the accomplished actor and his wife, Betsy Arakawa.

At the Oscars on Sunday evening, Morgan Freeman hit the stage to introduce the annual In Memoriam segment, which is used to pay tribute to some of the actors and creatives who've been lost over the past year. Freeman wanted to be sure that Hackman got his flowers, stressing how much of an icon the Unforgiven star had been in Hollywood. Along with sharing some memories of the actor, Freeman noted how Hackman was a 2-time Oscar winner himself.

The Oscars In Memoriam tribute, set to Mozart’s “Requiem in D Minor,” began with a tribute from Morgan Freeman to his “Unforgiven” and “Under Suspicion” co-star Gene Hackman. Hackman, who was 95, was found dead last week in his Santa Fe home along with his wife, Betsy Arakawa.

“I had the pleasure of working alongside Gene on ‘Unforgiven’ and ‘Under Suspicion.’ I learned he was a generous performer and a man whose gifts elevated everyone’s work,” said Freeman. “He received two Oscars. Say what you will about "Gilligan's Island," but the critically derided 1960s sitcom knew its audience and pandered to them with buffoonish élan. Though that audience didn't fully materialize until after the series' cancellation in 1967, decades of successful syndication is all the proof you need to acknowledge that creator Sherwood Schwartz (who also brought together "The Brady Bunch") was some kind of low-aiming visionary.

More than a year ago, it was announced that Oscar-winning Juno writer Diablo Cody was set to produce a film based on Violet Karim’s webcomic Death of a Pop Star. Just three months ago, we heard that Cody would be writing the screenplay for a remake of the iconic 1980 comedy 9 to 5. At Comic-Con 2024, she revealed that the new version will focus on the cultural clash between Gen Z and boomers in a modern office setting. Martin Mull, who played Colonel Mustard in Clue, Roseanne’s boss Leon Carp in the ABC comedy Roseanne and starred on Norman Lear’s Fernwood 2 Nite, died Thursday at his home. He was 80.

The news was revealed by his daughter Maggie Mull, an exec producer on Family Guy.

“I am heartbroken to share that my father passed away at home on June 27th, after a valiant fight against a long illness. He was known for excelling at every creative discipline imaginable and also for doing Red Roof Inn commercials. He would find that joke funny. He was never not funny. My dad will be deeply missed by his wife and daughter, by his friends and coworkers, by fellow artists and comedians and musicians, and—the sign of a truly exceptional person—by many, many dogs. Bill Cobbs, a prolific film and TV actor with memorable performances in Night At The Museum, Brother From Another Planet, Oz The Great And Powerful, The Sopranos and dozens of others, died surrounded by family Tuesday, June 25, of natural causes at his home in Inland Empire, California. He was 90.

His death was announced by family members on Facebook, and confirmed to Deadline by his publicist Chuck I. Jones.

“We are saddened to share the passing of Bill Cobbs,” wrote brother Thomas G. Cobbs. “On Tuesday, June 25, Bill passed away peacefully at his home in California. Bill Cobbs, the convincing character actor who had pivotal turns in such films as The Hudsucker Proxy, Sunshine State and Night at the Museum, has died. He was 90.

Cobbs died Tuesday night at his home in Riverside, his publicist, Chuck I. Jones, told TMZ.

A native of Cleveland who excelled at comedy as well as drama, Cobbs portrayed Whitney Houston’s manager in The Bodyguard (1992), the older brother of Medgar Evers in Rob Reiner’s Ghosts of Mississippi (1996), a jazz pianist in Tom Hanks’ That Thing You Do! (1996) and the Master Tinker, builder of the Tin Woodsman, in Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful (2013).

He also played the wise coach who put a basketball-playing dog into the Timberwolves lineup in Air Bud (1997).
