This Memorial Day weekend has been very fruitful at the box office thanks to record-breaking earnings by live-action Lilo & Stitch and Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. But the box office isn’t the only place where the Mission: Impossible franchise is making waves, it has taken over a streaming service too.

Per, FlixPatrol, fans are binging the Mission: Impossible franchise on Paramount+, resulting in most movies finding a spot on Top 10 charts. The Dead Reckoning is at #2 spot, followed by Mi: Fallout, followed by the original Mission: Impossible. Interestingly, another Cruise movie, Top Gun: Maverick, is right at #5, followed by Rogue Nation, Mission: Impossible II, Ghost Protocol, and Mission: Impossible III. There are only two exceptions in the list, with Jack Quaid’s Novocaine at #1 and Norbit at #10 on the charts.

At the time of writing, the film currently sits at $79 million domestically and $127 million from international markets for a worldwide total of $206 million. Although still well below Lilo & Stitch, Tom Cruise’s new action thriller has now passed Constantine, the 2005 superhero horror film led by Keanu Reeves, at the domestic box office. Constantine grossed $75 million at the domestic box office, which adjusts to around $123 million when accounting for inflation. The Final Reckoning is roughly $15 million behind Constantine globally, but it will certainly pass it before the end of the week.

However, one character killed off in the previous sequel wasn't revived for the latest installment, and director Christopher McQuarrie has a reasonable explanation why.

Speaking with John Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McQuarrie addressed the death of Rebecca Ferguson's character, Ilsa Faust, in Dead Reckoning and why she wasn't brought back in The Final Reckoning amid fan calls for her to return. Despite the backlash regarding Ilsa's death, McQuarrie claimed the best choice was not to revive her as her demise was meant to mirror realism and finality within the film series, creating more emotional resonance and credibility.

"It's the cost versus benefit. The death of essential characters has followed Ethan throughout every one of these movies.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning concludes with the good guys saving the day, and Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt getting his hands on the AI Entity that very brought the world to its knees.

The Imf team meets in Trafalgar Square, Grace gives Ethan the drive, and he walks off into the crowd, perhaps ready for his next mission or to take a well-earned break. Either way, the door is left open for another adventure, and if that doesn't happen, then it's a solid, open-ended way to conclude the character's story (he's out there somewhere...we just don't know where).
