Brolin Says Spielberg Still Holding Key to Goonies 2
Josh Brolin
Josh Brolin says the long-rumored follow-up to 1985’s The Goonies remains stalled because Steven Spielberg has not yet approved any of the five scripts sent to him to date. Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere of Weapons this week, the actor admitted “trepidation” about reopening the story but said he still hopes the project happens for new generations of viewers.

In February Warner Bros. signaled fresh momentum, hiring Old Henry writer Potsy Ponciroli to tackle a new draft while keeping Spielberg, original screenwriter Chris Columbus and Amblin partners Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario on board as producers. IMDb’s industry news feed listed the hire among the studio’s slate updates. Industry outlet Punch Drunk Critics called the move the “big step forward” fans had waited for. Wikipedia now marks the sequel as confirmed as of 14 February 2025.

Cast enthusiasm remains high. At a 40-year anniversary screening in Salt Lake City,...

Frank Sinatra's Advice Changed One Of Clint Eastwood's Biggest Movies
Image
San Francisco may lag behind the likes of New York and Los Angeles in terms of sheer volume of films shot on location in the city, but it makes up for it with some extremely memorable screen appearances. There was the giant octopus attack in "It Came From Beneath the Sea," with real footage of the Golden Gate Bridge spliced with Ray Harryhausen's creature on the rampage. Steve McQueen was behind the wheel for the famous car chase in "Bullitt," and Ryan O'Neal and Barbra Streisand topped it with the best action scene ever in "What's Up, Doc?" Union Square was the setting for Gene Hackman's wire-tapping in "The Conversation," and Alcatraz Island took center stage in "The Rock". Then there was "Dirty Harry," the best Frisco movie of the 1970s, and weirdly, we have Frank Sinatra to thank for that choice of location.

Image
Elizabeth Berkley made a surprise appearance Saturday night at an LGBTQ Pride screening of her cult classic “Showgirls.”

The movie’s showing was part of Cinespia’s 30th anniversary celebration of the film at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles.

“Happy Pride! I love you guys so much,” Berkley said, eliciting applause and cheers. “You have no idea, I love you so much. I just want to honor this extraordinary, powerful, bold, magical, sexy, strong, resilient LGBTQ+ community.”

She continued, “You guys saw me before anybody else saw me. You believed in me before anybody and you believed in this film and found yourself in Nomi.”

Berkley stars in the film as Nomi, an aspiring dancer in Las Vegas who is befriended, but then double-crossed by, Crystal (Gina Gershon), the aging star of “Goddess,” an upscale strip show. The cast of the movie, directed by Paul Verhoeven from a Joe Eszterhas script,...

The Goons in ‘The Goonies’: Joe Pantoliano and Robert Davi Share Their Best Pranks and Memories from Playing the Fratelli Brothers
Image
Forty years ago this month, one of the biggest movies of the 1980s arrived in theaters. A coming-of-age story of kids on a search for buried treasure, The Goonies captured audiences at the time with its whimsy and imagination — and it continues to find new fans to this day.

But the movie isn’t just about the kids. In competition for the buried treasure is the Fratelli family: the surly, face-slapping Mama Fratelli (Anne Ramsey) and her two idiot ne’er-do-well sons, Jake and Francis Fratelli (Robert Davi and Joe Patoliano). Together, the trio delivered some of the movie’s biggest laughs, while also adding a looming danger to the already harrowing tale.

Ramsey passed only a few years after The Goonies was released, but the men who played her sons have seen the movie endure into a beloved cult classic. For the film’s 40th birthday, I spoke to...

The ‘Goonies’ Cast Reveals How the Set Devolved Into A Prank War
Image
Goonies never say die, nor do they say “uncle.”

This Saturday will mark the 40th anniversary of the release of the 1985 adventure comedy The Goonies, and the now-grown stars of the series still have the on-set antics from the landmark film’s production fresh in their minds. Before America fell in love with the group of friends who set out on a quest to find long-lost pirate treasure and save their homes from foreclosure, the cast of The Goonies became real-life pals with all the real-life rowdiness, wrestling and pranking that comes with being a bunch of kids given free rein to improvise and raise hell on a Hollywood set.

Hell, even the adults of the Goonies team joined in on the antics, as many cast and crew members from the film discussed in a recent conversation with The Guardian. According to them, director Richard Donner and producer Steven Spielberg...

James Bond's Greatest Ally Got His First Solo Mission In Comic Books
Image
As long as there has been James Bond, there has been Felix Leiter. The character was introduced in the very first Bond novel, "Casino Royale," all the way back in 1953, and was initially written as a CIA agent and former U.S. Marine who allies with Bond while working with NATO's Joint Intelligence Staff. Leiter was a way for the author to dramatize the so-called "special relationship" between the UK and US, though 007 himself was always the dominant agent.

When Bond transitioned to the big screen with 1962's "Dr. No," Leiter came with him. Jack Lord played the character in Bond's first big screen outing, but would be replaced by Cec Linder when the character returned in 1964's "Goldfinger." Still, Leiter remained a part of the 007 movie franchise throughout its six-decade run, with seven actors portraying the character across that time. Most recently, Jeffrey Wright took on the...

Actor Robert Davi Fears Conservative Views Could Keep Him Out of ‘The Goonies’ Sequel: ‘I Hope They Don’t Hold My Politics Against Me’
Image
Robert Davi is eager to reprise his role as Jake Fratelli in the recently announced sequel to The Goonies, but he worries his political views might keep him out.

The actor, 73, expressed his concerns in an interview with Fox Digital, stating that his outspoken conservatism—especially his support for Donald Trump—has cost him jobs in the past.

“I do hope I’m part of it,” Davi said. “I hope that they don’t hold my politics against me and keep me from that project.”

Davi acknowledged that he’s seen his political beliefs impact his career.

“I’m concerned about it, yes,” he admitted. “Because it’s happened on other issues, other projects. And it’s just, you know, I believe in free speech and not being politically correct all the time.”

“Why me?” | The bizarre experience of watching films on British TV in the 80s and 90s
Image
From dubbed actors to jarring edits to terrible image quality, watching films on British TV was a minefield in the 80s and 90s…

Saturday the 5th August was a truly magical day on BBC One. Not just because Dale Winton – assisted by the ever-dependable Terry Nutkins – presented a vintage episode of Pets Win Prizes. Or because Tony Robinson presented Stay Tuned!, a thoroughly charming series about the history of animation.

No, the 5th August was particularly memorable because it featured an unusually early screening of shark attack sequel, Jaws The Revenge. Its 6pm air time was so early, in fact, that the BBC wound up cutting out roughly 10 minutes of its gore and toothsome mayhem to keep it friendly for a pre-watershed audience. Never a long film to begin with (roughly an hour and a half), the Jaws sequel which showed that summer evening ran for just 80 minutes.

This was...

Timothy Dalton Hopes Amazon Do Right By the ‘James Bond’ Franchise
Image
The news of Amazon MGM Studios’ takeover of the James Bond franchise is still being processed by many, and it seems that includes some of the stars who have previously stepped into the role of the suave super spy. The latest former franchise star to share their surprise at the news that Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson will no longer be a part of future Bond projects is Timothy Dalton, who starred as one of the toughest and hard-hitting Bonds until Daniel Craig arrived on the scene in Casino Royale.

RelatedWhy Timothy Dalton Was the Right James Bond at the Wrong Time

Fate and timing conspired to prevent Timothy Dalton from being remembered as the best James Bond since Sean Connery.

Having played Bond in 1987’s The Living Daylights and 1989’s Licence to Kill, Dalton’s tenure as 007 was more fleeting than most, and his movies are often underrated for it.

'Hope They Don't Hold My Politics Against Me': Goonies Star Thinks His Political Views Will Prevent Him From Returning for the Sequel
Image
The Goonies fans received some good news last week with the revelation that its long-gestating sequel had found its screenwriter, as the project gets into full swing. Robert Davi, who played Jake Fratelli in the first film, is concerned that he may not be allowed to reprise his role in The Goonies 2, given his conservative political views and public support of President Donald Trump's current administration.

In an interview with Fox News, Davi expressed his desire to return in some capacity as Mama Fratelli's criminal son for the upcoming sequel to the beloved 1985 Richard Donner film. "We shall see," he said. "We shall see if they revive Jake Fratelli, or the Fratelli brothers in some way. I hope. I would love to be part of it because it's such an iconic film that people all over the world still reach out to me on Goonies. It's interesting. It's become beyond cult status,...

Per Deadline, it's just been reported that Potsy Ponciroli (Old Henry) has signed on to write a Goonies sequel script for Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group. Ke Huy Quan On Blowing Up, Kicking Ass, And Turning Leading Man
Image
Ke Huy Quan is in the eye of the storm. He’s been here before, of course. When he was barely a teenager, he was a global icon — we all grew up gasping at his adventures, from battling Thuggees in a cave system lousy with voodoo in Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom, to being menaced by Robert Davi and Joey Pants in The Goonies. Those blockbusters put him on the map. But after decades of quiet, during which a retired-from-acting Quan suspected that his Hollywood journey had stopped for good, that storm is whirling again, fiercer than ever.

As an adult actor, he’s won an Oscar for his comeback role(s) as Waymond in mind-melting multiverse romance Everything Everywhere All At Once. He’s met and taken photos with seemingly every celebrity in Hollywood, including, recently, both Billy Crystal and Mickey Mouse simultaneously. He’s joined the MCU with Loki,...

'The Goonies' is Coming to Max
Image
The Goonies Richard Donners beloved teen adventure from 1985 is landing on streaming service Max sooner than you can jump from a ship like a swashbuckling pirate. The film will start streaming on the platform on December 1, according to a press release from parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.

Produced by Steven Spielberg through his company, Amblin, The Goonies was directed by Donner, who was returning to the industry after serving audiences with the widely panned comedy, The Toy. In 1985, he also released Ladyhawke, a passion project he had been trying to make for years, but The Goonies was much more prominent. Based on a story by Spielberg, and written by Chris Columbus (after the young writer proved his worth with Gremlins), The Goonies is a 1980s movie that perfectly captures the storytelling style of a filmmaker who didnt have to sit in the directors chair to let audiences know that he was involved in the project.

Joe Pantoliano's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
As one of the most recognizable character actors in the business, Joe Pantoliano's movies and TV shows feature some unforgettable projects that show his scene-stealing skills. Though Pantoliano is rarely seen in the lead role, he is the kind of actor who the audience is drawn to whenever he pops up on screen. Pantoliano first started to gain momentum in the business with his role opposite Tom Cruise in Risky Business and remains a hard-working actor many decades later. However, his long career has included some projects that stand above the rest.

Pantoliano has a comedic energy that has served him well, be it in straight comedy roles or adding a little levity to some serious movies. He has held his own and even stolen the show from so many movie stars, including Harrison Ford, Will Smith, and Keanu Reeves, while also working with the likes of Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan.

Clint Eastwood’s Best Role Was Nearly Snatched Away by Frank Sinatra
Image
Clint Eastwood may not hold the youthful charm he once did in the 1950s or be the leading star of Spaghetti Westerns, but the Eastwood name can never be replaced as long as Hollywood stands. The movie star and cowboy actor of the century transitioned perfectly from the old talkies to the 21st-century Oscar-winner Million Dollar Baby without breaking a sweat.

Meanwhile, the industry stepping out of its Western fixation failed to outgrow and catch up to the rapidly transforming world outside. Their inability to adapt to the changing times and customs posed a huge red flag for the industry, marking the end of an era. Gone were the days of simplicity when all that the audience was curious about was if Frank Sinatra really had connections with the mob. The 1970s were all about the neo-noir classics and action thrillers.

The Reagan release came during the final weekend of August, at the same time as several similar non-tentpole new releases including the Blumhouse AI horror movie Afraid, the L.A. riots thriller 1992, and the Casey Affleck sci-fi movie Slingshot.

Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, projections for the domestic box office show the overall grosses turning out one of the summer's slower weekends in spite of the 4-day Labor Day holiday. The holdover hit Deadpool & Wolverine is continuing to reign supreme, taking the No. 1 spot for the fifth non-consecutive time with a projected 4-day total between $19 and $20 million. Of the raft of new releases hitting theaters, the most prominent was Reagan,...

Dennis Quaid's New True Story Movie Has Critics & Audiences Very Divided
Image
Dennis Quaid's new movie, Reagan, has critics and audiences very divided. Directed by Sean McNamara, with a script written by Howard Klausner based on Paul Kengor's book, The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism, the film follows the life of Ronald Reagan from his childhood to his time as president of the United States, told through a conversation between two former Kgb agents. Quaid stars as Reagan alongside Penelope Ann Miller, Robert Davi, Lesley-Anne Down, and Jon Voight in supporting roles.

Now, with reviews published and Reagan released in theaters, the film is fiercely dividing critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, Reagan has a 25% score from critics and a 97% audience score, recently renamed the Popcornmeter. These scores are only based on 28 reviews from critics and 50+ verified ratings from users, so they are subject to change over time.

‘Action Jackson’ Blu-ray Review (Warner Archive)
Image
Stars: Carl Weathers, Craig T. Nelson, Vanity, Sharon Stone, Tom Wilson, Bill Duke, Robert Davi, Jack Thibeau, Mary Ellen Trainor, Ed O’Ross | Written by Robert Reneau | Directed by Craig R. Baxley

Action Jackson (1988), directed by Craig R. Baxley, stands as a remarkable fusion of the blaxploitation genre’s legacy and the dynamic, explosive nature of 1980s action cinema. While it may not reach the iconic status of blaxploitation classics like Shaft or Super Fly, Action Jackson offers a distinctive experience that both honours its roots and embraces contemporary action movie tropes.

The film centres on Jericho “Action” Jackson (Carl Weathers), a Detroit police sergeant demoted due to his overzealous tactics. Jackson finds himself embroiled in a plot masterminded by industrial magnate Peter Dellaplane (Craig T. Nelson), who aims to seize control of a powerful union. Weathers delivers a charismatic and physically commanding performance, embodying the tough, no-nonsense hero archetype essential...

License to Kill Is the Gritty James Bond Movie That Changed the Series Forever
Image
Secret agents going rogue is such a common trope that sometimes we wish that people like Ethan Hunt or Jason Bourne would just follow their orders for change. When Daniel Craig started playing James Bond in 2006, it seemed like Bond went rogue on nearly every single mission, including most of Quantum of Solace, at least half of Skyfall, and basically, the first two-thirds of No Time To Die. Pierce Brosnan’s Bond went rogue in Die Another Day, too, with a full beard and no shirt, declaring “I’m checking out” from a hospital. And of course, Connery’s Bond was on an unsanctioned revenge mission at the start of Diamonds Are Forever.

But the most compelling Bond-goes-rogue movie of them all to this day remains Licence to Kill, which in 1989, would become the unintended swan song from Timothy Dalton’s fierce take on the character.

On June 13 of that year,...

Dennis Quaid is Ronald Reagan in New 'Reagan' Biopic Movie Trailer
Image
"There's nothing a retired governor can do about the Soviets..." ShowBiz Direct has revealed a trailer for a movie called Reagan, a brand new biopic about the 40th President of the United States of America. This will open in theaters at the end of August this summer. Actor Dennis Quaid stars as Ron, who worked as an actor before getting into politics. "I've always been told bits and pieces of the stories of Ronald Reagan's life, but this movie puts the whole story together. I've played quite a few real people over the years, and I like to play them from their point of view, without judgment. It was a big challenge for me to get behind the public persona of the man and also to move beyond my own feelings of admiration for him." Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, the film was shot in Oklahoma...

Raw Deal: Revisiting the most obscure Arnold Schwarzenegger films of the 80s
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold Schwarzenegger made a whole slew of classic 80s action movies. Still, one remains totally obscure despite being released smack dab in the middle of his amazing The Terminator to Predator run of movies from 1984-87. That film in 1986’s Raw Deal. A formulaic 80s action flick, it’s the most modestly mounted Schwarzenegger action epic of the era, with Arnie coerced into starring in it to complete a long-standing contract he had with producer Dino De Laurentiis following Conan The Barbarian.

In it, Schwarzenegger is somewhat unconvincingly cast as a small-town sheriff named Kaminski, who used to be an FBI agent but was forced out of the bureau after roughing up a suspect. He’s recruited by his old mentor (The Night Stalker’s legendary Darren McGavin) whose son was killed by the Chicago mob. He wants Kaminski to go undercover in the mob and tear them apart from the inside.

Image
Showgirls' 30-year cult classic status redeems Elizabeth Berkley's career, proving critics wrong with newfound pride. Berkley's emotional acceptance of LGBTQ impact and standing ovation at Academy screening shows film's redemption. Despite initial infamy, Showgirls reevaluation showcases split opinions on satirical industry portrayal.

In front of an appreciative, sold-out crowd of 1200, Berkley proved that any disappointment and shame she previously held about starring in the film are now well and truly in the past.

“What are you doing, you idiot?”: Arnold Schwarzenegger Was Fuming At ‘Die Hard’ Actor in the Middle of Film Screening For Hilarious Reason
Image
It’s been 36 years since Die Hard hit the theatres and became a memorable action movie that still remains relatable in the entertainment industry. Providing a watershed genre moment, while building up the careers of Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman, Die Hard also featured often forgotten actors like Robert Davi.

Arnold Schwarzenegger | image: The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Playing the character of badass FBI Special Agent “Big” Johnson, Robert Davi offered a memorable performance despite being a lesser-known scene-stealer. But while his character initially starts by saving the day, he gradually becomes dumber and dumber in the film. This character deterioration was something that disappointed Davi’s close friend, Arnold Schwarzenegger, during the film screening.

Robert Davi Watched Die Hard Screening with Arnold Schwarzenegger

From working in 1986 classic films like Raw Deal to becoming close friends, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Robert Davi have often appreciated each other’s works from time to time.

10 Great 1980s Movies That Wouldn't Work In Any Other Decade
Image
Many movies from the 1980s capture the unique aesthetic and themes of the decade, making them iconic and beloved by fans. These movies often feature independent kids, self-discovery, and over-the-top adventures, which resonated with audiences at the time. While some aspects of these movies may have aged poorly, they are still considered fun and campy adventures that showcase the spirit of the 80s.

The 1980s has a very particular aesthetic, and several movies that came out in this decade would not have worked 10 years earlier or 10 years later. Most of John Hughes' movies fall into this category, as well as several cult classics built around the music, fashion, and most popular storylines of the 80s. Predictably, some aspects of these movies have aged poorly with time, like bad CGI and stereotyped characters. Yet some movies attempt to showcase the harm of stereotypes.

Additionally, some movies slot themselves so well into...
